Garnet had, in her opinion, shown that she was a capable adventurer. A year ago, she may have been a naive and coddled princess who knew very little about life outside the walls of a castle, but since then, she'd travelled the world. She had stayed in inns all over and slept in tents, battled monsters and seen the sort of things most people never experienced. And she had known love and heartbreak and love again. She was not a naive little girl anymore, who didn't know how to speak to commoners, didn't know the names of basic weapons, and had never even seen a common oglop. She had experienced it all, she had camped under the stars and slept in rickety inns, she had travelled to far off lands, battled snow and desert and even ended up on a far off world. She was, by most people's standards, a seasoned adventurer.
So why did she feel like such a useless, lost little girl all over again?
Well, she imagined it had to do with the nature of her most recent abduction. Garnet was a Queen now, and used to threats to her security. She had been kidnapped in the past, of course, as a princess, sometimes voluntarily, sometimes not, but never had something like this happened. One moment, she had been the happiest she could remember. Zidane was alive, and he was back. She was holding him in her arms as he recounted where he had been for the last year (or so it felt), and she wanted to thump him on the back of the head as well as hug him and never let go of him for the way he had returned to her. Really, he had put on that whole act with the play... It was....
Who was Garnet kidding? It was incredibly sweet. She had never felt emotions that strong, that kind of joy mingled with sadness, desperation, disbelief... When she threw herself into his arms she thought her life could end right at that moment and she would never experience an emotional high any higher. But that thought hadn't meant to be a challenge to the gods. It hadn't been a request to teleport her away to a whole other world. But here she was.
She did, at least, feel experienced enough that where ever she had ended up was nowhere she recognised on Gaia. The ground was swampy, which was immediately inconvenient. She still remembered her first time stepping into Qu Marsh, the modest heels on her travelling boots sinking and nearly being sucked clean off her feet. She wasn't wearing modest travelling boots now. She was still in her gown, and beneath the huge dress were beautiful, artistically decorated, white stiletto heels. They gave her height, and a dainty presence befitting a young Queen. What they did not give her was practical footwear for the swamp in which she had landed.
She didn't recognise the swamp. Of course, it would be naive to claim she had seen every part of Gaia, but she had visited pretty much every major area, and those she hadn't she had seen from the Hilda Garde III or the Invincible. She knew the map of Gaia as well as any explorer, but this particular area didn't fit any description she could imagine.
She stopped, and let out a huff. She could barely walk, both her heels were stuck fast in the swampy mud, and she had to stop to wriggle herself free. Once she had done so, she only managed a few steps before her long gown snagged on something and she was caught again. She struggled to free herself from that, but her heels became stuck once more. She wrestled them free, but then her dress was caught again...
This went on for some time, and she stopped, a little short of breath. She looked back. She had made it perhaps five meters. Her attire was just completely inappropriate for the location she had landed in. She could barely make it a few feet in her dress, and every step presented challenges. Even back when she had been a naive little princess running away from home, she had at least chosen some appropriate travelling clothes. Yes, okay, in retrospect perhaps a bright orange jumpsuit wasn't the smartest outfit if you were trying to lay low and not be noticed, but she hadn't really known any better, and after that, well, it meant a lot to her that outfit. It was still one of her favourites. She experienced a lot of tragedy wearing it, but also good times. Good memories and good friends.
Also, it didn't get caught on every little darned twig.
She yanked her dress free yet again, and tried to gather up the rather mighty train and carry it in her hands, but there was too much of it, it was much too big, and the hoopskirts she wore underneath made it no less practical to carry than to wear. She tried not to think of poor Beatrix and how much effort she'd put into making sure Garnet looked presentable, now that the bottom of the dress was brown with filth. She waved a hand at annoying midges that swarmed her. They always seemed to swarm her when they had travelled, even back on Gaia. Zidane had speculated it was her perfume attracting them. She should have probably stopped wearing it, but truth be told, she kind of liked that Zidane had noticed. It made her smile.
It made her smile considerably less now, but not as little as the howling roar from behind her. She turned, swivelling on her feet, which was a mistake, because it drove both heels deep into the mud. Tree branches snapped and bushes shook. Something was coming. She tried to run; she was in no condition to fight, she had no staff, no support, she was a white mage, a powerful one yes, but she supported others in combat, not fought herself. She had the odd spell that might help, but not much to defend against anything that big, not without calling forth an Eidolon, and she didn't want to have to do that unless absolutely necessary. But her efforts to run were in vain, her stubborn heels refused to budge. Turning had made them sink deep, and she was stuck in the mud. She tried furiously to free herself, but she didn't have time, and the beast was nearly upon her.
Zidane, where are you?
No. She couldn't rely on him. Friendship was a powerful thing, a great thing, but right now, she was alone. She closed her eyes and her hands began to glow. She might be mostly defenceless, but she wasn't entirely helpless, even if in a ridiculous dress and unarmed. She would go down fighting.
Caius meanwhile, had done nothing but fight. Since he was in his early teens he had been taught to fight and little else, as the Ten Years of Darkness descended on the Kingdom of Lucis. Losing his family at a young age and having to forge his identification to get into the Hunting Guild in order to survive, Caius Dragelion had done everything to survive on his own, even in a daemon infested world where darkness was everywhere, light was scarce and most people you met on your travels wanted to kill you for your valuables, some even just for sport.
Too bad it didn't prepare him for swamps.
Vordun needed time to recover after the trip to Sonora and Celes' having cut him open to deal with debris that had pierced his scales and needed to be removed. So Caius was on his own for the time being, and perhaps more annoyingly, walking. But if he was to get back to Torensten and report back before returning to Provo for their next big expansion into the territory, then he had to deal with this gods forsaken swamp. And Caius knew there were monsters here. There were monsters everywhere, why wouldn't they be in a filthy, boggy swamp where they could feast on whoever got stuck in this accursed place? Which was why he wasn't surprised when he heard the snapping of twigs and branches. Surely something was nearby. He didn't summon his sword yet though... He would be able to summon it instantly, and if the creature thought him unarmed, it was more likely to make a mistake.
But as he made his way towards the sound, the last thing he expected was to find a woman stuck in the swamp. One who hadn't cried out for help -- not that it was likely to do anything but attract monsters, of course. He stood there a moment, a little dumbfounded. A young woman, maybe a bit younger than him, was wearing the least suitable clothing for a swamp possible. A massive frilly dress that looked like she had just left the Masquerade. And yet, she was in a swamp.
She didn't look like she was taking a swamp bath, so odds were she was stuck. He let out a sigh, not bothering to ask questions. Taking a moment to figure out his trajectory, he suddenly warped forwards, re-appearing above her and grabbing her hand. Even without a weapon to lock onto, so long as he had something he could lock onto, he could warp. The weapon just typically made it easier. Once he had her hand, the both of them disappeared, dress and all, and re-appeared on dry land, leaving a series of afterimages behind them that showed their travel path. He released her hand then, before stretching out to get some feeling back.
"Interesting choice of swamp exploration attire. Are you hurt?" he inquired curtly.

The feeling of being helpless was one Garnet both knew intimately and hated strongly. She always felt that whenever she tried to do anything on her own, she ended up as some pathetic damsel in distress, but being stuck in the mud in a swamp was a new low. Garnet had never actually been aware that you could become literally stuck in the mud, she thought it was just a saying, and while she had encountered resistance while walking plenty of times, she'd never actually become so hopelessly mired as she was now.
And then, in an instant, she was free. It happened so quickly she had to wonder if her futile struggling had somehow broken the swamp's hold on her, but that didn't seem to be the case. Her mind took a moment to catch up, before she realised somebody had pulled her free of the trap. She looked around, to see a slightly older looking man, neatly dressed, if not smartly, with unshaven stubble. His blonde hair was long, and for a moment, reminded her of Zidane's. He seemed to be checking that she was alright. "I'm fine, I'm just-" she shook her head, trying to understand where she was. She processed what he had said. The witty comment about her dress. She supposed that she did look ridiculous. "Hey! It's not nice to make fun of somebody you've just met, you know?" she replied, putting her hands on her hips in annoyance. She was mostly being playful, but it was about the best defence she had, given the absurdity of the situation.
Any thoughts or concerns were cut off, however, by the same rustling of whatever creature had been observing her before, now up in the trees. It seemed it was still following them. Garnet took a slight step back, instinctively placing a hand on the stranger's shoulder for protection out of concern. "I... don't think now is the right time to discuss my situation, but... I don't know how I got here...." she explained quickly. "I assure you, if I were to explore a swamp, I would not dress like this!" she told him, although again, that hardly seemed the problem at the moment. Something was in the trees, slithering towards them, snapping branches and bending leaves. Some kind of big snake, perhaps?
"I'm... not sure I'm ready to fight..." she admitted, somewhat awkwardly. "I have white magic. I can support you, but... I don't have a weapon,"and I'm useless with one anyway, she didn't add out loud. Something felt wrong when she tried to feel her Eidolons. They weren't all there. She could sense... Ramuh? Only Ramuh. The others were gone. Ramuh and swamp water wouldn't mix, he'd have as much chance of electrocuting the pair as the snake, so she had to rely on her newfound saviour.
Once again, Garnet realised, she was relying on the kindness of strangers. She was slightly ashamed, she had thought she had become a professional adventurer, but... it seemed that she still had a long way to go when left alone...

“It’s not nice to the swamp to show up to it in a dress, either. Imagine if I took you to the ball while wearing nothing at all? How does the ball prepare for that?” Caius cheeked right back, fully aware she was just playing around and meant no actual offense. With the half-explanation she gave soon after, Caius had a pretty good idea of what was going on right now, but it appeared that it would have to wait. He closed his eyes. He could hear the hiss, the rustle, the slither… A skilled hunter could hear prey and predator alike, if they knew what to look for. They were near, and they weren’t stopping.
But he was able to hear what the woman was saying as well, to an extent. Something about white magic, which was enough really. He also heard her say that she didn’t have a weapon, and while that in of itself WAS concerning… He could deal, he supposed. “If you don’t have a weapon, then you need to stay out of harm’s way. Back me up with your magic, and I’ll have this done in a jiffy” Caius made his play. Gave his game plan. His tone had suddenly grown serious, and firm. His voice like a military commander’s, giving orders. With their lives at stake, especially hers, it was now time to get serious and do as was necessary to survive. This was one of the leaders of the Dragonblades now in play here.
“I also need you to be a second set of eyes for me. Find them. If you see them before me, alert me before they strike.”

Garnet couldn't help but give the stranger a look when he made his sarcastic remark regarding the swamp. The inappropriate sense of humour at such a time reminded her more of Zidane than she'd like to admit. And for a moment, she felt as much the confused, put out princess she had been back then, when he'd first crack jokes and she wouldn't be sure what to make of them, or worse, think he was mocking her. But she wasn't that confused little girl anymore. And she knew better. "If I have offended the swamp, I shall be sure to write it a letter of apology," she replied curtly, with her own sarcasm instead. It seemed appropriate.
Rather than carry on with the sarcastic remarks or the banter, she simply nodded and took a step back, allowing him to take the lead. The monster was doubtlessly drawing near, and regardless of whether or not she had a weapon, Garnet fell easily back into the pattern of her role when they had confronted the more powerful monsters; stand back and provide support magic and summon spells, and allow the heavier hitters to engage in close range. In that manner, she supposed not having a weapon wasn't the end of the world. "Do not worry, I have you covered," she assured, closing her eyes and casting a blue light over him; a protect spell, to demonstrate said power. She didn't want him thinking she was entirely useless. She looked up, her eyes scanning the trees. She focused out with her magic, feeling around. Her white magic may have been useless offensively, but it did have some benefits. Namely, that she could target an enemy with it, and in doing so, identify where they were. Particularly if she reached out with scan, as she did so now....
"There!" she pointed quickly to the large snake in the trees, slithering towards them, as it lashed out towards Caius...

"I'm sure the swamp will appreciate your apology when it's done trying to kill us" he cheeked right back with an amused hum, seeming to approve of her return in humor. With that, his concern turned completely to what needed to be done, and that was to ensure they both survived. Caius took a deep breath, before blocking out all other sound but what he could discern was from the creature. The trees, the dry, long grass... The bubbling of the bog, the little caws of jungle birds and wildlife in the distance... All tuned out. Narrowing his senses, as the hunter need be...
She had said she had him covered. That was all he needed to know. From the corner of his senses, he could hear her cry. "There!" the young lady had called, and Caius' eyes burst open. He already had an idea of where it was, and now that she had pointed it out, that meant it was visible... And that meant it was about to strike.
A massive snake-like creature burst from the tall grass, and just as its jaws opened, Caius disappeared. It snapped forward, Caius appeared above it and slashed through its scales, weakening it, but not downing it. The creature let out an enraged hiss, and lunged towards Caius once more right as he landed. He knew that reptiles had scales almost impossible to pierce easily, but...
He hadn't been expecting it to recover this quick.
He didn't know what came over him, but inspiration struck as Caius was enveloped in blue light a moment, warping just a smidge to where the attack seemed to phase through him. Drawing his blade once more to prepare to take advantage, he hoped Garnet was able to provide some support to make sure it got done...
And just like that, the snake was upon them, attacking. For a moment, it reminded Garnet of the creatures in Fossil Roo that had chased them and proved so resilient. This one looked smaller, however, and with any luck, the two of them would be enough to take it down. The stranger leapt into battle, and it took Garnet a moment to reorient her senses to not cry out a warning after him. It had been a while since she had been in battle, and she had always known her comrades abilities, but she didn't with this man. But he had a weapon, and she had to trust that he could handle the close quarters combat, so that she could handle the magic from a distance.
She watched in surprise as he phased, moving with incredible speed. It vaguely reminded her of how she had seem Amarant move in his first duel with Zidane, but even faster, leaving a ghostly after-image behind as he moved just a few steps to the side of the creature, dodging its attack. But it was vicious, and fast, and it seemed smart too, knowing just how to move and target him and recover quickly. She knew that she needed to do something to try and throw it off. Closing her eyes, Garnet began to cast, her hair flying back as she held her hands out, almost imagining where her staff would be if she actually had it with her.
Inky blackness descended over the snake's eyes, turning the already dark orbs utterly black, hovering behind a cloud of thick smog. Blind. It should reduce the creature's ability to target her ally, and that would allow him to strike at it properly. "It's blinded! Now's your chance!" she called, in case he hadn't understood what she had done, even as she took several steps back, keeping her distance because she really didn't want it sensing her out and attacking her. Without her staff, she had no way to hold it off at all, and that was definitely not a good thing...

And just like that, the creature was blinded. Caius didn't hesitate. Seeing his opportunity, the mercenary quickly rushed forward, and what unfolded was a series of slashes across the scales of the snake, trying to find a weak point. Eventually he seemed to batter an area near its neck, and warping upwards, he would somersault forwards in mid-air to gain momentum, loosing a ferocious war cry as the mercenary brought his sword down on the creature's neck. Once the tip of the blade entered, he pulled the trigger and the gunblade fired inside the snake's body. All resistance stopped, as Caius then completed the slash, severing the snake's head from its body. Not risking the possibility it might have regenerative abilities, Caius leaped back and held out a hand.
"FIRA!"
The blast of fire engulfed the creature. The swampy wetlands would keep the fire from spreading past its initial exploding point, keeping the fire to just the snake itself as the body soon after dissolved once it worked its way past the scales. Caius took a deep breath as his blade disappeared in a flash of blue light. Once he had settled himself, he looked to the woman that had helped finish it off.
"Not bad" he commented. He then wiped the creature's blood off his gloved hand before holding it out to Garnet with a gentle smile. "Caius. May I have the pleasure of your name, madam?"

Garnet had to admit, she was impressed by the man's combat abilities. No, perhaps impressed was the wrong word. Intrigued/ He wielded both Black Magic and a blade with impressive skill; something she hadn't seen before. Some soldiers of Alexandria could use Black Magic, but not that well, and Steiner could work with Vivi - poor Vivi - to cast attacks, but she hadn't seen somebody so capable of doing both. She felt for a moment completely inadequate, she was just a White Mage and Summoner, which somehow felt less impressive. She had to remind herself that being a summoner was something special. It had, after all, cast her home into war just for her abilities, hadn't it? Maybe that was why it was impossible to feel pride in it, or a sense of power. She could only see it as a curse, even if she was much more happy to work with her Eidolons these days and do the right thing.
Relieved that the creature had fallen, Garnet let out a relaxed sigh. It felt a little odd, usually when something like this went well, she liked to twirl her staff. It was just a small sign of appreciating the victory, but, well, since she was unarmed, she had nothing to twirl, so she just smiled over at the newcomer, who introduced himself as Caius, extending a hand. She stared at the hand for a moment, not too sure what to do with it. People didn't usually shake hands with a Queen, and etiquette hadn't really taught her how to take a handshake when offered. Weirdly enough, on all her travels, it had never come up. Regardless, she awkwardly extended her hand to take his, and bowed her head slightly. She felt a little rude for not actually offering her name earlier, but she had been pretty distressed...
Options flew across her mind when he asked. She had no idea where she was, who he was, or if it was safe to let him know her true identity. But on the other side, she was fairly obviously royalty in this gown, and denying it could lead to a problem later on. Besides, presumably where ever they were, it was still on Gaia, probably on the Mist Continent, he might help her get home if he knew who she was. Maybe this was just a forgotten part of the Qu Marsh she had never seen? It didn't look the same, but it seemed possible...
"Apologies for not introducing myself sooner. I was... somewhat distracted," she admitted, releasing his hand and dropping into a formal curtsey (bowing was difficult in a corset and gown). "I am Queen Garnet Til Alexandros XVII. I must confess, I am... not certain how I have come to be here..." she said somewhat awkwardly.
Queen Garnet Til Alexandros XVII... Where had he heard that name before? Caius struggled to remember what felt like so recently, mentions of a Queen from another world with that name. He remembered someone telling him about Kuja, and his obliterating his own planet before moving onto theirs, and how big of a threat he was here. He had already begun mobilizing the Dragonblades to look into the matter after finding it out, so he knew that he wasn't dreaming it up... And yet, how he came to know this name and the details of it all were lost to the wind. Another casualty of how this world works, he supposed. There was no point in dwelling on it any longer. Whoever this person had been would have surely wanted him to focus on the task they had imparted upon him. And he supposed on the side, it couldn't hurt to help out their Queen in the process, now that she had found herself here as well.
Now that he had a chance to study her face, there was a vague familiarity to her. But it wasn't pressing enough to merit much note. He had seen people with similar faces many times in this world, after all. It was a stark reminder of how well-traveled and battle-worn he had become.
She took his hand and bowed, and he bowed in return. She explained that she did not know how she came here, and he smiled lightly. Of course she didn't. He understood.
"Most of us don't" he admitted. "A lot of us have been displaced from our own worlds into this one, and wound up in the strangest places. I got lucky and fell into an open field just outside of town. Looks like you weren't so lucky. Both in location and especially not in attire" he added with a small laugh. "Least I can do is take you with me until we get to Torensten. Get you a change of clothes and a place to sleep for a bit. Won't be fancy, I'm afraid. Nothing fit for a Queen. But it'll do ya."
