Caius had decided to stay in Sonora for a period to get the word out about the Dragonblades Mercenary Guild - a group of mercenaries who specialized in monster hunts, routing bandits and dealing with criminal activity when law enforcement could or would not. The Dragonblades did not have much of a foothold in Sonora, even if some members did live in the area. Caius hoped that by going out of his way to grow his own reputation and that of the Dragonblades in the area, they would be able to help more people in need of a blade. Of course, Cissnei had given him plenty to think about. Branding, and others doing similar work in the area. But he hoped that their niche would help matters. Caius hit things that needed to be hit, it should be as simple as that, right?
He hadn't been able to find any work on the first day. Well, second. When he had arrived, Sonora had been beset by three giant robot houses that then turned into one merged monstrosity that stomped through the streets until Caius and a man with blonde, spiky hair and a ridiculously large sword had put a stop to it in a long, exhausting fight that had taken them through much of Sonora. Caius' ears were still regaining their hearing from the piercing sounds it had made in defense of itself, and his mount had been wounded in the scuffle, forcing Caius to send Vordun home.
Still incredibly sore and not at a hundred percent, and now operating in Sonora alone, Caius had found his second day to be less about finding work, and more filled with people trying to rebuild after the destruction. Not just from the robot either. Apparently a few days before, a group had gotten into a scuffle that had leveled an entire section of the city in their wake. Between that and their new incident, mercenary work was slim at the moment. So Caius had decided to help out while also getting a name out in the process, volunteering in the slums to help the rebuilding process.
Today, he figured probably wouldn't be much different. But he had woken from his bed in the hotel to find a letter waiting for him at the front desk.
"Mr. Caius,
We have been informed of your role in the recent incident, which has verified your efficiency in combat to us. We have also heard that you are a mercenary looking for work in Sonora. With that in mind, we would like you to aid us in an issue that has been plaguing Sonora for some time. There are pests in the park area in the slums that really must be taken care of. If you are interested, meet us at this park this afternoon to help us exterminate these monsters, and you will be paid handsomely. Our families will also ensure that you and your guild will be well recommended to others looking to hire for similar work.
We hope to see you there."
Monsters in the park? The letter was unsigned by name, only bearing a series insignias that he did not recognize. He supposed it was possible that it was a trap, but... He also knew it was possible they could be very helpful to his quest in Sonora. Deciding to risk it, knowing he could handle himself if it came to it, Caius ventured out to the slums that afternoon. The park wasn't that large, and didn't seem to get that much use. What he did notice were the various tents littered about, with people in ragged clothing wandering about, or sitting at curbs, or trying to cook meals over makeshift fire pits. Caius was no stranger to homelessness, it had been more than abundant in his own world after the Darkness came. It was a shame to see it here too.
But what puzzled him was that he didn't see any monsters... He decided to find his clients first. That would point him in the right direction.
Vincent didn’t recognize where he was. The hulking metal city seemed almost familiar. Midgar, the name came to him suddenly. But, it didn’t quite fit. He clutched his throbbing head and tried to figure out what had happened and where he was. He could barely remember anything. But maybe that was just due to the headache. His skull felt like it might split in two as he leaned against a rusted metal wall and shut his eyes against the kaleidoscope of flashing lights that appeared in his eyes.
The last thing he remembered, almost the only thing he remembered was walking through the Wutai countryside. The sun had been shining overhead and the waves crashed against the shore not far away. Everything had been peaceful and calm. Why had he been in Wutai? Yuffie. The name seemed to attach to the place Wutai in his mind. Had he been seeing someone named Yuffie?
Vincent cursed and waited with closed eyes until the pain in his head finally started to subside. Until the noises of the city surging around him didn’t sound quite so overwhelming anymore. When he finally reopened his eyes, he was able to take better stock of the city and its people around him. No one seemed to spare him a second glance. No one cared about the stranger in their midst, they all went about their lives as if nothing had changed.
Suddenly he remembered his phone. Maybe he could just call someone and figure out what happened with that! Surely he had contacts saved and people he could easily call. He reached into his pocket and tried to turn the device on. He was met only with an unhelpfully black screen. Of course, that simply would have been too easy. It didn't respond to anything he did so he slipped it back into his pocket uselessly.
He took a few steadying breaths before joining the masses of people on the wide street. He wouldn’t find answers on the side of a rusty wall. Surely there was a logical answer to all this. Some trick of magic, something easily explainable. He’d find it. So he went further into the city that looked eerily like the hazy memories of a place called Midgar. Ideally, he’d find answers. But hopefully, he could find lodging at the very least.
Obviously he had no idea where he was going. He let his feet carry him, with little thought put into his path. Soon, he found himself in a derelict slum, full of rusted buildings and makeshift shelters. The people were sparser here and now he got an odd look or two. A curious glance from a shadowed doorway, an exclamation here, and a raspy plea for money there. To the last he muttered a quick “sorry” and moved on. He had no idea what the accepted currency was in this strange city.
Finally, he came to a small park in the center of the slums. Like the area around it, it was downtrodden and destitute. Here, tents were erected as shelter for the people huddled in groups, all wearing ragged clothing and covered in a thin layer of dirt and dust. He stood at the edge and watched them, still feeling a nagging sense of the familiar. He was confident, despite his still patchy memory, that this was a sight common where he had once lived. He turned to leave the park. These people looked like a close-knit community. They were unlikely to want to help a stranger in their midst, especially one with expensive-looking armor despite the ragged, frayed edges of his cloak.
As he turned the corner to return to the main street, he nearly ran headlong into a man he hadn’t noticed before. He was tall, taller than Vincent was with long blonde hair. And he looked like a soldier or mercenary, judging by the sword he carried. Perhaps this man would be the source of the answers he sought. Vincent nodded at him, short and brief. There was no need for pleasantries, that was a waste of effort. He simply asked, “Where are we?” Because that was his most pressing concern.

Caius found very quickly that he disliked this place. Not that he disliked the people, the place just made him feel... Sad. Sad that even with all the advancements that Sonora had made, things beyond his wildest dreams and he had still yet to explore it all... There was still homelessness to this level. It upset him to see it, and upset him even more that there really wasn't anything he could do to stop it. He wished he could help these people, and perhaps a way to do so would present itself, but... He still wanted to leave here as soon as possible.
Deciding to speed the process, he held out a hand as his sword would be summoned into it from thin air, in a burst of blue light. The sword would identify him as the mercenary his quarry was looking for, hopefully. But still nothing. What did come though, was an oddly dressed man. He would ask where he was, and Caius blinked a few times in confusion but decided there was no reason not to oblige the man's request.
"You're in Sonora, sir. Slums district, a park by the looks of it."
"Mr. Caius! Over here!"
Caius' attention turned to a group of three who were waving him over. He gave the man dressed in red a respectful half-bow. "Excuse me" he bade him farewell as he made his way towards them. Judging by their garb, the three were fairly well off. But something Caius noticed right away was their age. They couldn't be any older than he was. And he doubted they had the upbringing he did to merit looking the way they did for any reason other than belonging to some wealthy family or families. He did recall the letter saying their families would reward him handsomely... He supposed that made sense. So these were the sons, likely the heirs, of some rich families then?
"I'm Caius" he greeted the trio, as he then looked around. "I'm ready to get started. Where are the monsters? I haven't seen any since I arrived."
The trio of kids looked puzzled for a moment, but then suddenly began to laugh in unison.
"Look around you! They're everywhere!" one barked between sputtering fits of uncontrollable laughter. Caius looked around again, blinking a few times and tilting his head in confusion. "I don't see any. Are they invisible?"
"No, you silly man! These pests are everywhere in this park! Stinking up Sonora with their filthy bodies, squatting here, where they aren't wanted. Our families have shares in this place, but it's worthless with these monsters taking it up! These beasts are a plague on Sonora, and if you can help us exterminate them, as I said... You'll be paid well for your services."
"But I don't understand. Am I the only one who can't see the monsters?"
Caius was completely confused, and his clear confusion made the laughing start again a bit longer... Until it stopped. One of them spoke up.
"I guess so."
The one speaking suddenly turned to one of the homeless that had been sitting nearby, who was holding out a hand for change.
And then he reared back and punted him in the head.
"Hey!"
Caius' eyes widened, and his sword disappeared into thin air out of shock at the display.
"What are you doing?!"
"Exterminating the pests. Might as well get a headstart, until you understand the job. Try not to take too long, will you?" one of them chided Caius, as another handed him a baseball bat. His expression contorted into something horrible before he leaned back and swung...
But instead of a prone man's skull, the bat met Caius' arm. The impact hurt Caius, and it would sting for awhile... But he didn't care.
"What are YOU doing?" one of them demanded. Caius saw that one of them had pulled out a crowbar, and another some kind of device that was emitting electricity. He recalled seeing one of Sonora's officers carrying something like that... But he didn't care. His expression was stone, but his teeth grit as he let out a low seethe. Now he was starting to understand the situation. The homeless man crawled away as Caius stared into the punk's eyes with a look that made him withdraw the metal bat quickly and back up. Once his companions rejoined him though, he seemed to regain his confidence...
"If you're going to defend trash, then you'll die like trash."
Caius was tempted to draw his blade, but decided against it. They were still kids, punks as they were. Unarmed combat would be enough. The crowbar was swung at him, but Caius deftly moved to the side with a surprising quickness for a man his size. His elbow was rammed into the forearm carrying the crowbar, before Caius spun round to build momentum for a kick that hit the chest, sending him back. The youth with the metal bat swung for the fences at his head, but Caius proceeded to grab the bat mid-swing. He parried it back into his chest, doubling him over before striking with an elbow that sent him sprawling.
But Caius had forgotten one issue, and that issue sent volts through his body as the taser hit his back. His armored jacket negated much of the damage, but it still was a powerful shock. But Caius still turned about, causing the taser user's eyes to widen, his pupils shrinking in utter fear as he stepped away. Caius grabbed the taser, pulling it back and its wielder with it. Caius crushed the taser between his large fingers and palm, before yanking the youth back and striking with a hard headbutt that floored him straight.
A crowd had begun to gather, and Caius shook his head to get out the cobwebs from the headbutt and electric shock. But as he looked around to see if more were coming at him, he realized the next swing was not meant for him...
Instead the bat wielder had snuck away and was about to swing the metal bat at the skull of one of the men in patched coats who had been knocked over... Caius' eyes widened as he tried to charge forward, but he didn't know if he would make it in time...
Sonora. The name meant nothing to him. He’d spent years traveling across Gaia, there was no way that a city like this could exist without his knowledge. Where am I? He asked himself again, trying to think past the throbbing in his head. But he didn’t have long to try to figure out this mystery. The blonde-haired man was moving away to speak to a group of young men. Vincent gave him a short nod of acknowledgment as he bade him farewell.
Vincent was about to leave the park, to find an inn, a restaurant, anything. But he was stopped by the conversation he overheard. The man, Caius, was asking about monsters. Was he a mercenary on a contract of some sort? At the thought of monsters stalking the park, Vincent double-checked that Cerberus was still strapped to his thigh. The three-barrelled gun was still mercifully there. He didn’t draw it, but moved closer to the men, listening and watching. His headache lessened as he focused on the present.
The young men seemed to think the entire situation was hilarious. They laughed at Caius, apparently thinking everything was just a huge joke. Vincent narrowed his eyes and looked the trio over. They looked wealthy, by the standards of any city. What were they doing in this park amongst the transient population anyway?
The exchange went on for a bit longer, both sides clearly not knowing what the other was talking about. Then Vincent saw one approach one of the homeless men. He tensed, hand on Cerberus. There was nothing trustworthy about the wealthy kids.
A foot connected with the man’s face. Vincent started at the sudden display of violence. Caius was there, yelling and angry. And the jape was up, finally. The monsters Caius was sent to dispatch were nothing but the homeless trying to eke out a living in the park. Anger filled him but he didn’t want to draw Cerberus, not yet. Not on three stupid rich kids who thought the owned the world.
Caius had the same thought, running in with only his fists as weapons against the troublemakers. He dodged a crowbar and parried a bat. Vincent fisted his gauntlet hand and moved to help. Caius was clearly well-trained, but it was one versus three. He could easily get overwhelmed. The one holding the crowbar was trying to stand back up and run at Caius again but Vincent intercepted him and easily shoved the disoriented kid back down. The crowbar clattered away.
But behind him, Vincent heard the sound of electricity buzzing in the air. He spun around to see a taser connecting with Caius. But the man remained standing, seeming barely affected as he turned and crushed the taser. He didn’t need help. But there was someone else that did. The kid with the bat was sneaking away from them, into the homeless camp. A man was on the ground, trying to right himself. But the bat wielder was over him, raising his weapon.
Vincent charged. He was closer than Caius. Gauntleted fist connected hard into the side of the punk’s face just as he was about to bring the bat down. The kid went down, cursing and spitting out blood. He clutched at his head and moaned. The homeless man who was nearly his victim scrambled away, back to the relative safety of the tents.
He pulled out Cerberus and pointed it at the wounded kid on the ground. He didn’t know that Vincent would be unlikely to shoot. “Get up. Move. Back to your friends.”
The kid hurled insults and spat out more blood. A tooth was probably loose. That seemed a minor injury compared to what they’d wanted Caius to do to the homeless population. But another hard stare from Vincent and a long look at Cerberus convinced the man to obey. Cowed, he rejoined the other two on the ground near Caius.
Vincent kept the gun pointed at the three and looked over at the blonde-haired man. “What was all of this about? They hired you to murder homeless people?”

Before the bat could connect, the man from before had intervened. Very quickly the rich punk went down, and it didn't take much more for the lot of them to get the message and stay down. Caius though, was more concerned about those that had been hurt. So he just motioned for the kids to leave them, and they ran off, cursing and swearing about a reckoning to come for the both of them. Not really caring, Caius began the real work. "Cure" he spoke softly as he moved from person to person, healing the wounds of those that Caius had been unable to prevent from taking damage. He felt bad that he had not been able to prevent pain from happening to some of them, so he wouldn't rest until he made good on it.
Of course, he wasn't ignoring the questions of the man who had helped him either. He motioned for him to wait for a moment. Not that he was being rude, he just wanted to focus on his task first. Once he was satisfied though, he turned around to face the dark-clothed man.
"Seems it" he admitted, letting out an exasperated sigh. "I'm a monster hunter. They told me there were monsters in the park, so I came here to meet them and deal with them. I've seen cruelty on many levels over the years, but... I never imagined it could be this petty, this... Civil. And from people that young too" he admitted, frowning in turn as he grew more upset on the matter the more he thought about it.
Unfortunately, Caius knew all too well that it was not something he could fix. He could kill hundreds of monsters... But a sword wouldn't put an end to the monsters inside of the people around him.
"Still, I owe you my thanks. I don't want to think about what would have happened if you hadn't intervened" he spoke graciously, with a respectful bow of his head. "I apologize for my previous interaction being so short, and without a proper introduction. My name is Caius. As I said, I'm a monster hunter, but I belong to a mercenary faction called the Dragonblades, who hail from the Torensten Dukedom. If there's anything I can do to help in exchange for what you've done, let me know."
Vincent kept his gaze and gun trained on the three kids until they completely escaped from view. He didn’t think they’d be causing any trouble anytime soon. They had seemed rightfully terrified when Caius and Vincent had turned against them and their sick plan. Then Vincent dropped the gun and returned it to his belt as he watched Caius move through the huddled people whispering curative magic. Their wounds were mostly superficial and seemed to heal quite easily under the man’s ministrations.
After the mercenary had finished he returned to Vincent and began to answer his questions. Caius explained that he was a monster but hadn’t realized the monsters in this case were just people trying to live their lives. Vincent’s face mirrored the blonde’s frown when he said he couldn’t imagine that level of cruelty, from perpetrators that were so young. “I spent years as a traveling mercenary. It’s not the first time I’ve seen something similarly awful,” he commented, brows furrowed as his head lanced with pain. He knew his comment was true but he couldn’t recall any specific memories. When he tried, everything was hazy.
Vincent shifted uncomfortably as the man brightened and praised him for his help. He’d only done what anyone should have done. No one should have stood by and watched the murder of innocents. Caius introduced himself more properly, saying he worked with a faction called the Dragonblades in a place called Torensten. Then he offered help in exchange for Vincent’s assistance with the young criminals.
He was about to refuse, when he remembered where he was and how lost he was. “You said this city is called Sonora? I’m sorry, I seem to be suffering some memory loss or confusion. Would you tell me more about the city, maybe point me to an inn?” As an afterthought, he added, “And Torensten? Where is that?” Mercenary work was his forte, after all. Maybe he’d check into these Dragonblades sometime.

With the punks gone, Caius could finally allow his shoulders to lower just a little. Things would rest easy, at least for now. Caius was glad that he hadn't needed to use weaponry, as while these punks were terrible, using his weapons on kids, punks or not, didn't sit right with him. With this man here, causing any serious harm wasn't necessary. So he was more than grateful for that. The man didn't give his name though, instead talking about memory issues. He had memory issues enough to not remember his name, perhaps, but knew enough to know he was a mercenary? That was interesting. Or maybe he just forgot to give a name.
"I've seen plenty of horrible things during my time as a mercenary as well. But this might be the most petty" Caius admitted with a disdainful shake of his head. This was nonsensically cruel. Cruel for absolutely no reason other than cruelty. He had seen it before, but... Never on a more civil level. It was always bandits. Horrible, horrible bandits, the ones that the Dragonblades had been warring with for months now to stop this kind of thing. It was horrible to think that this sort of thing was perpetuated even by punk kids, hurting people just because.
"Sonora's cold, as you can guess, but in more ways than one. You probably dealt with a fair bit of trouble getting in, on account of your clothing and probably had to deal with quite a few questions. They are incredibly strict around here, but also more technologically advanced than anything I've ever seen" he summed up when it came to Sonora. "You can be arrested pretty brutally for just about anything, so stay on your toes."
He pointed a little ways out of the park. "They call inns hotels here. They have one just up the road from there."
Inns? Perhaps he was from the Torensten area and just didn't know it? "Torensten has inns, though. As does Provo. Both are to the south from here. Provo is in the center of Serenestra, it's a trade center between Sonora and Torensten. Torensten is... A lot different from Sonora. And a lot less cold. Just try not to tell everyone on the street you're looking for Torensten. They don't like that here. Either way, Torensten's a long journey. But you can catch an airship there once you get to Provo."
[attr="class","vvoverlap"]Too much hope is the opposite of despair.
[attr="class","vvbody"]Vincent tried to focus on Caius’ words as he explained the city of Sonora, as well as Torensten and Provo. His head was still throbbing and he was still confused and disoriented, but he did his best to listen and understand the words. Sonora didn’t sound like a welcoming place in the slightest, but it was familiar to him. The technology he’d seen was much like he remembered using in the past. The city didn’t strike him as odd or entirely overwhelming, not even with the information about the strict guard and the likelihood of being arrested. It didn’t seem unusual for a city of this type. So Vincent merely nodded and took the advice stay on your toes to heart. The last thing he wanted was incarceration in a new city in a new world he didn’t understand. He could keep a low profile, blend in. The first order of business was probably an outfit change at some point. His gold-armored boots clanged against the pavement below his feet. Yeah, those would garner too much attention here. [break][break]
Caius corrected his use of the word inn. Apparently they were referred to as hotels here. That was another good piece of information Vincent stored away. He’d look like more of an outsider if he didn’t use the proper terms. “Thank you. I’ll try to get a room there.” Hopefully this city used gil as its currency. Surely it did. [break][break]
Torensten and Provo both sounded very different from Sonora. Southern and warm, for one. And apparently Torensten was looked down upon in Sonora. “I appreciate the explanation,” he said and nodded. “I don’t think I will attempt to leave Sonora any time soon. Not until I can remember more of my past.” He was about to bid the other man farewell when he realized he’d never even given his name. He’d been too confused, too disoriented. Then too distracted by the fight and the bevy of new information.[break][break]
“My name is Vincent, by the way.” He pulled his cloak around himself, obscuring the majority of his outfit and weaponry from view before turning. “Thank you again. Goodbye, Caius.”

Caius knew Torensten quite well, and to a limited extent as such with Provo. Sonora meanwhile, was still a mystery to him. He only knew the place was unwelcoming, strict and a hotbed for trouble. Torensten had plenty of trouble too, but... It was typically the exciting kind of trouble, in a way. Sonora had done nothing but make him feel uncomfortable and out of his element. Which was ironic, hadn't he come from a world with technology not too far from Sonora? He hadn't gotten to experience too much of it as the Darkness had taken over before he was even an adult. or even an adolescent for that matter... But for one reason or another, everything about Torensten had set him at ease, even with its completely different culture and stark lack of technology the way that he knew as such.
Sonora just made him uncomfortable in ways that he hadn't realized could make him uncomfortable. Least he could do was warn this guy about it. He seemed to have memory issues, and he didn't know if he'd recover them anytime soon. So it was best he made sure that he was going to do alright. Especially if he intended to remain here for a little while longer, as he had indicated. The man then gave his name -- Vincent. Caius nodded his head. "Good to meet you" he spoke up then. It seemed that Vincent was ready to head out though, and he nodded, bowing his head in farewell. "Best of luck to you, Vincent" Caius responded as he watched him go. With that, he supposed it was time to make sure everyone was alright here... His visit to Sonora had been a sour experience already. He honestly couldn't wait to leave.
