Cissnei leaned forward to finish wiping down the tables of the café. It was not a particularly large café, but it was enough to bring in a small revenue and a bit of the local gossip from off the streets. The information was really what she was after, since it grew difficult to be active on cases after obtaining her injuries, courtesy of Asael and Sephiroth. Plus, she wanted to raise a little to help the people affected by the damage caused by the two swordsmen. It was another step toward gaining the public’s favor with the Turks. And once she finished finding a better spot for her investigative agency, she would soon set to work to purchasing out the space.
Her lips spilled a sigh of relief and wiped the sweat off her brow. She tossed her rag in a bin after cleaning. She eyed the café one final time before flipping the cardboard sign on the door to closed. She had healed a little and regain some mobility in her arm. The pain was mostly gone in her back, except for some of the bruises. But the cheerful maid dress and the face she put on for people hid the damage. It was amazing what people would tell you when they have food and a good mood.
She grabbed a broom from the backroom. She hefted the shoddy broom with purpose, before leaving out the front door. The sidewalk was full of dust from the day. As she swept it away, she wondered where each dust particle came from. How many travelers passed through here, bringing with them a different type of dirt from various parts of the world. It puffed up in gentle clouds and glittered in the dimming light of the day.

After Caius' "little" run in with the merged robot transformer thing that had stomped through several blocks in Sonora, cutting and slashing and stamping through everything in its path before he and Spiky had managed to put a stop to it - he hadn't thought for a minute that Sonora had literally just gone through yet another crisis shortly before. Apparently a large section of town had been wrecked by the fight between a group of people, and someone with a huge sword or something like that. Details were still yet to come out in full, though Caius was interested in what could have possibly happened. He'd need to check the news later.
For now though, his body was still a little run down from the fight. He'd taken his share of lumps, and his senses were still a little bit haggard after the stereo system from the transformer had nearly blown his ears off, and he could still hear the buzzsaws going for his head. Still, he was intent on getting to work today now that he had gotten some sleep. His first plan was to get some food in him, and then march out of town to check on Vordun. The dragon had taken his own share of lumps in the fight, even if the creature wouldn't be able to get credit for their contributions. Least he could do was make sure that Vordun was doing okay before he made serious headway. And he had every intention of rewarding their patience with food he'd be saving from his breakfast.
As he neared a place that looked like it was a decent eatery (Caius was still finding his way out of Sonora as of this writing, after all) a striking flash of orange hair crossed his vision, and his head darted toward the source. It was a woman in a maid uniform, dusting off the sidewalk. Perhaps he wouldn't have taken notice if not for the fact that there were only a scarce few people he knew with hair that striking. While the odds of it being anyone he knew were slim, as he didn't know any cafe sweepers, or whatever they called them in Sonora, she-
Cissnei. It was Cissnei.
He had looked to her face just out of curiosity, not expecting to see a face he knew, but there it was. He stepped back slightly, but calmly caught himself before he could fall on the sidewalk with a quick movement of his foot. Clearing his throat, he spoke up.
Cissnei had been lost in her thoughts, still trying to determine her next plan of action. How could the Turks continue to thread their seeds in Sonora? Solving more mysteries and helping the public with their issues seemed to help build a rapport and showed the Turks were reliable. Giving back the community showed that the Turks were there for you. Part of it was to pave a way for someone greater than her. Another part of it was to keep her busy. If she was busy, she thought less about the past.
Other actions she needed to take was to secure a new location for her investigation agency. Umbrella had been overzealous with a exploding her old one, just as she was getting settled in. Luckily the money from the café was finally turning a profit thanks to Ignis’s aid, as well as the money Asael threw down on her floor, was enough to get her to start looking.
So lost in her thoughts, she hardly noticed Caius walking the path as puffs of dust swirled at her feet with each broom stroke. She thought she saw someone slip, when she looked up. Well, this was not exactly where she thought she’d meet Caius again, but alas, here he was. “Temporary job.” She stated cooly, yet with good humor. She propped her broom to lean against the storefront. She didn’t mention she was injured, but she was not in the mood to explain. She talked herself all out with Sephiroth and to the Sonoran guards. “Unfortunately, we just closed for the day, if you are looking for a bite.”
She gave him a small smile, her eyes now studying him for a moment. “What brings you to Sonora?” Her tone suggested that she had not expected to see him here. She dusted off the hem of her maid outfit, before standing up straight. “Business, maybe?” A part of her doubted he took many vacations if there was work to be done. “And where are you going in a hurry?” Her eyes looked out into the direction he was heading.

Cissnei had certainly been one of the last people that Caius had been intending to see here. Especially in a maid outfit. But here she was. She seemed to take the whole thing in good humor though, bringing up that it was a temporary job. He supposed he could see the merit in that. Finding steady work to fund her efforts. He realized he never had really gotten to learn much about her during his time with her, aside from the fact that she was some kind of Turk. His encounters with Umbrella and Freyra had colored the organization as some kind of covert operations unit belonging to the Shinra company that Cissnei had told him was hunting him down.
He decided not to bring up that he had been a bit cautious with Umbrella. Freyra had already told him that Umbrella had reunited with the other Turks safely, and that she was indeed one of them. So he had what information he needed on the subject. Any apologies could be addressed to the woman herself the next time he ran into her.
Cissnei brought up that the place next to them was closed, and he looked to the door with a bit of an annoyed quirk of his brow. How long had his nap been? He knew he had exhausted himself on the trip here, and with the fight with the robot house thing, but... Geez. Either this place closed early, or he had slept late. It was annoying, but it was what it was. Caius would just need to find somewhere else.
She asked him what brought him to Sonora, and if it was business. Then where he was going in such a hurry. "Well, a bite had been the plan. I exhausted myself on the voyage here, and it looks like I slept a bit longer than I would have liked" he admitted, scratching his head in turn. He decided not to mention the robot house thing. He didn't really want to talk about it. "I was hoping to take some mercenary work in Sonora exclusively for a little while. The Dragonblades don't have a whole lot of influence here, and I figured it was time to change that" he explained. He had been thinking he might start in the slums, work for smaller prices and help out the people there, then move up to more dangerous jobs as he went.
"Might be a bit late for that today, though. Might just grab a bite and explore for a little while, get the run of the city if I'm going to be putting up roots here for a bit" he added. Thinking about it, if Vordun was going to be on standby for so long, maybe it was best he sent him home, he realized. Sonora was cold. That cave Vordun was resting in was toasty enough, but Caius didn't know the area well enough to trust Vordun being there for too long. And while Caius had healed his wounds, who knew if he'd suffered something he didn't know about or could heal? No, it was best he sent Vordun back to the homestead by himself. With a letter to Celes asking to check on him, and keep an eye on him at the homestead. Caius had been planning to have Vordun's help on this expedition, but... He knew he had to look out for Vordun too. Worst case scenario, he could send a letter off to Celes to order him back to Sonora, if it was an emergency.
"If I might ask, what brings you out here? Is this where you've been operating from?" Caius inquired. He had last seen Cissnei the last few times more toward the Provo region, so she had ventured quite a ways to get here.
The man seemed agitated. Was he that hungry? Some people just got that way when their blood sugar was low. But it couldn’t be helped right now. Everything had been put away and Caius seemed to be rushing somewhere else than here. Oh well. However, his words caused red flags to pop up in Cissnei’s brain. From what she had known of him, he was an honest guy. But people could change. “Your efforts for your guild are valiant, but I think you’ll be hard pressed for mercenary work here. The people have an entire police force and militia to protect them. Plus, they don’t take kindly to the word dragon.” Not after the attacks anyway. She gave him a wink, “May need to rethink some marketing strategy here.”
That’s how marketing worked in the business world. You could either hope that the populace liked what you sold and change nothing. Or you can tweak things to get the populace to look at you and make them believe what you sold is what they needed. Cissnei hired herself to private individuals or groups with issues to be solved. She could persuade the Sonoran force here to intervene, as needed. Unfortunately, her last time using them proved fruitless. Then again, what could stand up to Sephiroth and whatever Asael was? “Hmm. How about we go find you some food then? A little caffeine would wake you up. And you’ll find that this city doesn’t retire to bed early.” It was the wonder of technology.
She only nodded to his words. “I do operate my investigation business here. Unfortunately, my building was bombed, so I opened this small shop to earn a little more cash, while still taking on jobs. At least until I find a new building.” She gave him a wry grin, “And if you are looking for work here, you’ll be competing with me for business too.” Her words help no malice, only the truth of the situation. It would be Caius’s guild vying for business against the local police force and an investigation agency. His niche was a little different, so she would have to see how well he does.
“If you wait a second, I’ll go change out of my uniform and show you a warm spot to eat… Unless you’re absolutely starving.” She’d prefer to change after all. Walking around in a maid outfit attracted some unwanted attention and wasn’t quite as warm as her normal outfit. But if he’d prefer to jet now, then she would just go in what she wore.

Caius was still nursing a serious headache after that robot house transformer had blasted that atrocious sound at incredible volumes right at him. It was going to be a bit until his ears worked to full capacity too, most likely. They still felt like he was underwater at times. But he tried not to show it too much, especially with Cissnei. He respected her greatly and had no desire to make her think that his slightly lessened enthusiasm was in any way related to him not being happy to see her. But he was tired, hungry and running a headache, so he couldn't project the cheer that he would like to with her.
Cissnei brought up that it wouldn't be the easiest thing in the world to operate here, considering the militant nature of the police force. The word "Dragon" might be an issue too, she pointed out. Rethinking his marketing strategy, huh? He scratched his head. "Tempting. But might get confusing for members and for those that travel between cities. I appreciate the idea, will definitely give it some thought" he thanked her, managing a smile. "But for now, I think I'll try doing as I said and just try to get the word out, see how that goes. Hasn't been many places that I've been to that haven't had work to be done. If I need to start a little smaller and work up at a slower rate with the police already handling things, to pave the way for the others, that's no big deal to me. And if it doesn't work and we need a new approach... Well, suppose I can look into it."
She offered to accompany him to find some food, and he nodded his head. "I'd definitely appreciate that" Caius responded. He didn't entirely know his way around the city, Cissnei would surely know a decent place a bit better and a bit faster than he would be able to find. Though she did bring up that she ran her investigation business here, and that he would be competing with her for business. He blinked a few times. "Huh. I guess I hadn't thought of that" Caius admitted. He'd come here only to help out people in a wider area with what they did. And help out his guild members who were located more toward the Sonora area. He hadn't meant to potentially step on anyone's toes. Especially not hers. He'd figured the differences between their jobs would leave plenty of market, too. She specialized in investigating. He specialized in hitting things.
Running a mercenary guild was a little more complex than he had thought. It had seemed simple enough in Torensten and Provo, but he supposed if there were other big fish in a similar market...
"I'm sorry to hear about your building" he brought up, frowning a bit. Was it the recent incident here that had done it? Or the robot thing? She said it had been bombed, which didn't really narrow it down. But if she had a new temporary building so soon, it was probably the former or something that happened around that time. He supposed this also explained why the place was closed so soon, if she was running the place and was still trying to run her regular business at the same time.
Cissnei needed a few to change, though also indicated if he was in a rush they could go now and she'd tolerate it. He smiled as he shook his head. "No need to rush on my account. I can wait a bit longer" he promised earnestly. "You'd find a proper place much quicker than I would on my own, anyway. And if I'm to burden you with my company, I'd at least prefer you be comfortable".
Cissnei certainly noticed that Caius seemed less than enthusiastic. But there could be many reasons for that. Reasons such as he was still groggy after the nap, the cold was biting into him, or he was hungry as suggested earlier. Or maybe he had simply changed. People did that after all. And with the way he ran his business, it was a matter of time before the people he worked with changed him. By the end of their exchange, perhaps she would figure it out.
She only shook her head and shrugged at his business strategy. She already gave him a tip. She was not in the business of giving him more. “As you wish.” She said simply. He would have to see for himself. “Pave the way for others? Do you already have members here?” She would poke to see if she could identify them. This may be necessary information for the future for her.
She gave a dismissive wave at his apology. Already she was returning inside her building with the broom. He didn’t bomb her building. He didn’t have anything to apologize for. “You can wait inside by the fire. No need to wait for me out here.” The least she could do was keep him warm while he waited for food. She held the door open for him and then went into the backroom out of view. She changed out of her uniform and placed it on a hanger to place in the closet. She then replaced it with her usual suit and tie, followed by a heavy, warm coat. She looked at herself at the mirror on the inside of the door.
Once she was sure everything was in the proper order, she made sure the back door was locked and returned to the front. She gave her café a look over before going to the fireplace to begin snuffing it out. “Are you in the mood for any food in particular?” She asked beginning to snuff out the flame.

Caius sincerely did appreciate her business advice. He just wanted to try one approach first before trying another. He'd always keep this at the back of his mind, especially if things started not working out. But for now, he hoped he would be able to develop things here the same way he had elsewhere. If it didn't work out, he'd consider it, but he hoped for the best for his usual business strategy. At the least, it gave him the impression that this would be a much harder mission than in other cities. That was important. It just meant he had to work all the harder to make it work here.
Cissnei asked if there were other members here already. She was certainly asking quite a few questions, and he made a mental note regarding her possible intentions, but didn't voice them. "A few rookies, but not a huge presence as of yet. I'd like to make it easier for members who live in the area to find work, though" he responded curtly, thinking it was probably a safe answer to give without having to resort to lying.
Cissnei headed into her building and bade him to wait inside by the fire, which he gave a grateful nod toward before accepting. Walking shortly behind her, he would take the door when offered and walk inside. While she was off to change, he sat down before the fire with his legs crossed, holding out his hands to warm up. He was still getting used to Sonora's colder climate. He wasn't sure if he'd ever grow to actually like it. Eventually she returned, and he looked to see the black suit he was more used to. Getting to his feet, he gave her some room to snuff out the fire as he headed gingerly toward the door, though didn't go too far from Cissnei so as to make it seem like he was rushing away from her. She asked her question, and he shrugged his shoulders. "Not too picky at the moment. I haven't eaten much since yesterday afternoon though, so would definitely prefer something more filling" he admitted. He hadn't been able to get anything down after the deal with the robot, besides some drink. The battle had completely robbed him of his appetite.
So, he did have members already here. Interesting. But now that he knew they’d be competing, he seemed to be curter with her. He had changed quite a bit since she last saw him, didn’t he? Before he was more open and outspoken. Or perhaps that was only because they were on a mission together. Communication is key during such operations.
Cissnei gave a shrug back at his response. “Then something quick and easy.” He sounded like he needed fuel sooner rather than later. “You look dead on your feet. Working yourself thin?” She asked as she finished locking up and began her path down the grey streets of Sonora. She reached into her pockets to keep her fingers warm with the hand warmers. She was figuring out ways to deal with the cold in Sonora. Though she did not know how Sephiroth and Asael could deal with being in the cold without needing something warm to put on. But if there was anything to dislike more than the cold, it was the rain. Being cold and wet was just misery.
Cissnei led them to a burger joint about two blocks from them called, 'Fat Cat Burgers'. It had red neon signs out front against a white building. Cissnei held the door open for Caius and gestured him to come inside. It had black and white checkered floors with red pleather seats. The place was brimming with people considering the time of day it was. The waitress in a pink dress gestured them to the shake bar, implying that there would be a wait otherwise. She set menus down for them. Each showing what was at a typical fast-food diner. Cissnei slid herself onto the stool. “I usually get a shake and the catty burger here.” Not that she came here all the time.

Caius was tired. And hopefully when he was less tired, Cissnei would find him a bit more familiar. In truth, he held the orange-haired turk in high regard for her capabilities. Her being as courteous and respectful as she'd been previously had also given him plenty of reason to like her. She was one of the few that Caius could say for certain that he wouldn't ever mind her company. But today was a day where he was tired, his head was still pounding and his ears were still ringing. So today was a bit of an off day, to say the least.
Cissnei suggested something quick and easy, and he couldn't say he had any reason to complain about that. Hopefully once he had some food in him, now that he felt like he could actually eat again instead of just pumping his stomach with alcohol, he'd feel a bit less sick and run down. She then asked him about his condition. Was it that obvious? Dear lord, how run down did he look? Caius bit his lip a moment as he thought on it. While he didn't want to really attract much attention to the fact he was involved in the incident before, knowing Cissnei, he had an idea of where this was probably going to lead if he was honest with her. But he had no real reason to lie to her, either.
Oh well. What happens, happens he supposed. "I ran into some trouble on the way here. Gave me a bit more of a headache than I was bargaining for" Caius admitted as they made their way through Sonora. He never could get used to this cold. The tropical climate of Torensten was more his style, though his jacket at least helped matters here.
Cissnei led him to a joint that he recognized pretty quickly. He nodded his head in thanks as he walked in after her when she opened the door. While they had become pretty much non-existent by the time he was an adult, Caius had been to a fast food joint a few times as a hunter back in his own world. But having never really spent much time in Sonora, he'd never known this sort of thing existed here. But it only took a bit of smelling the grease to know exactly where he was.
It was kind of nostalgic, really. Gas station linked fast food stops to refuel himself between bouts of narrowly scraping by encounters with daemons by the skin of his teeth. The teenage Caius had reveled in their quick efficiency, seeing as most didn't tend to care about healthy eating at that time. But eventually he needed to find alternatives when those stations were overrun as well.
"I haven't been to one of these since I was a kid" Caius mused aloud as he gazed about the joint a moment before looking down to the menu once they were settled. "Didn't know places like these existed here. They're... Larger than I remember, though."
Not remembering what he would have ordered back then, he decided to trust Cissnei's tastes and would order the same. Perhaps if he came again, he could experiment himself. But for now, he was a stranger to Sonora, and Sonora was a stranger to him.
