"Damnit..." Selene hissed through her clenched teeth. This mission was turning out to be a bit more of a hassle than she thought.[break][break]
Earlier that afternoon, one of the village farmers approached her and asked for her help. It was not often she'd turn away a job in exchange for some food and coin, which this woman had offered. Selene was one of the few who was clad in at least light armor with a sword at her hip whereas most of the inhabitants of Provo were simple farmers and dared not venture too far into the wilderness. But Selene was daring, and at this point, she'd do just about anything for some food.[break][break]
A pack of coeurls had been pestering the woman's livestock, and a few had also gone missing. It seemed like a simple enough task... Search for the coeurls, eradicate them and that'd be the end of the livestock going missing. However, the woman failed to mention that there were also cactuar in the area... Selene really hated cactuars. She was quite familiar with them from back home. They liked to group up right outside the cit of Ul'dah and pester merchants as they rode by in their caravans. The cactuars would spit their needles into the canvas tops and they'd tear open, spilling the goods all over the dusty ground.[break][break]
That's why when Selene saw a cactuar cross her path, she sighed and grit her teeth together. The cactuar had stopped in the middle of the path and began a staredown with the frustrated blonde.

Caius had just wrapped up a job in Provo, and was getting ready to head back to Torensten. He had made plans to journey to Sonora for a time, and needed to let Celes know that he would be gone for a little while. She would likely be back from her own expedition by now, and in the time that she had been gone, he had been looking into places where he could go. Sonora was a bustling place, with many different areas that Caius had not yet been. If he was to expand the influence of the Dragonblades and start to help people all around where he could, he needed to go where he hadn't before. Sonora seemed like a good start. But he needed to get there first. And that meant giving a report back to headquarters, which he also needed to get to first, and letting his co-leader know that he would be away for some time.
Vordun had needed time to rest his wings before they could lift off though, which meant that Caius needed to kill some time. Deciding to explore the area near the camp they were hiding out in, mostly to ensure it was safe, he would stop when he peeked out behind a boulder to see the most queer thing. A tall, brown-haired woman was staring down a cactaur. His blade would instinctively materialize in his hand, but he didn't strike just yet.
What was going on before him, though?
It was a staredown for the ages. Woman and cactaur. A battle of wits, perhaps? Or a battle of wills? He didn't know, and he knew he was probably overthinking it, but he decided to wait just a little bit longer... If she needed help, he would intervene. But he was curious as to her capabilities, too...
While they weren't very dangerous, cactuars were considered a thorn in one's side, should someone come across them. They weren't particularly smart, and before they fled scared, they'd usually shoot their needles at their victim. That is exactly what Selene wanted to avoid. One sudden move from her and the cactuar could spook and shoot its needles out at her. For the most part, she'd be fine. Her armor hid her vitals fairly well, though her neck and face would be open for the prickling of a lifetime. It seemed like she stood there for a lifetime, wondering just what to do...[break][break]
"Hey," she finally spoke up to the cactuar. "Get out of my way. I really don't want to get poked today." The cactuar didn't respond. It's empty gaze continued in her direction and it wiggled ever so slightly. Selene tapped her foot, hoping that maybe it was just slow and needed another reminder. "Will you please move!" she almost shouted, more of a demand than a request. In her haste, she raised her sword up and almost immediately regretted that move.[break][break]
The cactuar spooked and shot needles out in every direction. "Ack!" she squealed, turning her head and blocking her face with her arms. When she turned back to look for the cactuar, all that was left in its spot was a comical puff of dust as if it had scurried away as fast as it could.[break][break]
Selene grumbled and placed her sword back in the scabbard, meanwhile shaking her short blonde locks to rid herself of any stray needles. Gods forbid she get one stuck in her skin, especially near her face. That would be painful. With this little distraction over, she continued to trudge down the path in search of the pesky coeurls, unaware that she had gained an audience.

Caius watched with a curious eye as the woman demanded that the cactaur get out of her way, mandating that she did NOT want to be poked. But the thing didn't seem to move. Caius quietly summoned his weapon into his hand, but he didn't make his move just yet. He regulated his breathing, preparing for the possible worst, but what happened next made his breath stop.
She yelled at it. Or well, almost. Pretty close anyway, the woman raised her voice, and Caius growled a low "fool!" under his breath. And then she raised her sword. Caius rose to his feet behind the rock. If the thing acted...
It acted. It shot needles at her, and Caius moved from his spot immediately. If it continued to attack, he would need to intervene, and so he made his way toward them. But instead of continuing and pressing its attack, the cactaur would instead make a run for it. Caius stopped, blinking a few times. He hadn't seen these creatures in person before, but he had read about the cactaurs and how dangerous they could be if spooked. It seemed that this woman had lucked out.
But now he was in a peculiar position. He had moved from his hiding spot, and just kind of stood there halfway between her position and the rock. Knowing full well he had lost his ability to hide, he decided to just call out to her.
"Are you injured?" he called, letting out a resigned sigh as he decided to keep trudging forward toward her. He might as well make sure there wasn't any serious damage. The woman had been foolish in her decision making with the creature, but that didn't mean that Caius couldn't lend a helping hand. That would be just as foolish of him.
This entire time, she thought she was alone. Facing off against a cactuar was risky business, especially alone. She thought she could take it. But it turned out she had been wrong. Selene was lucky it only shed its needles a few hundred times. She had heard about one of its more dangerous attacks where even more needles than that shot out... And all of this losing would have been fine had she been alone. Yet knowing that she was being watched... it made her stop dead in her tracks.
[break][break]
"Y-You saw that?" she asked, her face turning bright red. "How embarrassing..." she muttered, her palm finding her face and burying itself in it. However, she quickly regained her composure (or at least tried to make it seem like she had) and she smiled to the blonde man. "Everything's all good now," she called out, her eyes finally landing on him to get a better look.
[break][break]
The blue sword in his hands intrigued her, and forced her mouth to make a small 'o' shape. He had prepared to help her out? The thought was a bit soothing, to be honest. She had thought she was all alone in the desert, so perhaps having someone at her back, though she didn't know they were there, wouldn't have been a bad idea...
[break][break]
And then it struck her. She turned to face him fully, and took a few steps toward him, though that was not the way she needed to go. "Say..." she smiled with a tilt of her head, "Have you seen any coeurls about lately? I was on my way to search for them before I was so rudely interrupted..."

Caius knew full well the woman thought she was alone. But it was what it was. He shrugged his shoulders and scratched his head sheepishly as she brought up how embarassing it was to be seen making those mistakes with a cactaur. Still, she wasn't hurt. So that told him what he needed to know. He took a deep breath in relief, though still looked her over. Just to be safe, of course.
His sword disappeared from his hand once it was clear that she was uninjured and nothing was going to be popping up anytime soon to attack. And well, if he was wrong? Then he'd just summon it again. Simple as that, really. Either way, he tilted his head curiously as she turned to him to ask her question. She asked if he had seen any coeurls lately, and he blinked a few times. "Coeurls..." he muttered, trying to remember. Oh! Right, the tiger-like things with the weird horns! He had seen them back home, but... Never in Zephon. So they were here too, then? That was interesting.
"No, I'm afraid I haven't. Sorry" Caius responded sheepishly. "I haven't seen them since coming to this world, had never heard of any being in the area if I'm being honest."
Then he realized he hadn't had a chance to introduce himself. So he brushed off his hand and offered it to her.
"My name is Caius" he introduced himself curtly. "And the one hiding behind the rock is Vordun. If you aren't a fan of jaws though, he can keep hiding. He won't bite, though."
Vordun had stayed behind for the time being. But if Caius were to whistle or to call for him, the bumbling lizard would come a running. Wouldn't take him very long, either.
"And you? Why were you looking for them, if I might ask?"
She anxiously awaited his response, even going so far as to fidget a little as he took time to think. It was a simple question, one that she needed an answer to soon if she wanted to get paid for this mission... But he mentioned not seeing them since he came to "this world." Selene immediately understood, and sighed softly with a nod. "I see..."[break][break]
He broke the small silence between them by introducing himself. Selene put on a smile and tilted her head. "I'm Selene," she replied as she gently took his hand. Her gaze then traveled to the rock that he mentioned. She saw a bit of movement and her curiosity skyrocketed. Jaws, eh... She shrugged her shoulders and smiled a bit wider. "If he's your friend, then he's welcome."[break][break]
As for why Selene was after the coeurls... She sighed and planted a hand to her forehead, fingers splaying through her hair. "They've been terrorizing the roads up ahead. Apparently some merchants lost their goods because of them. I wanted to help put a stop to the attacks." It sounded nice, in theory... But could a lone Paladin like herself really do much?

She introduced herself as Selene. "A pleasure to meet you, Selene" he responded with a gentle smile. He thought he'd pay some kind of compliment to cheer her up with how disappointed she looked, but... Caius wasn't very good at this stuff. And unfortunately, the young lady seemed to be just as awkward as he was. So that was... Great. He regretted that he couldn't be of much more help, but it was what it was, he supposed. Not like he could magically conjure up the whereabouts of these things. But if she got the job in Provo, then they were probably in the general vicinity at the least. So there was that, right?
Selene seemed open to Vordun popping out, if he was friendly, so Caius gingerly let out a whistle and the lizard popped his head right out from behind the rock. Bumbling towards them at top speed, the drake looked more like a clumsy large dog than a fire-breathing dragon, but that was just how Vordun was. Vordun came to a stop next to Caius before promptly sitting down. Looking all the more like a dog in the process.
"Why don't we help you find your mark?" Caius suggested when it came to the job she was dealing with. Or was it just out of the kindness of her heart? She didn't really say. Either way, if he could help in some fashion, he would be happy to do so. "If the roads up ahead are their terrorizing spot, why don't we start there?"
Selene couldn't help but watch as the bumbling creature... Bumbled toward them. She giggled softly, fully glad to have had the chance to see this creature. She had seen bigger and badder things, and he seemed friendly. She dipped her head in a small greeting to the dragon.
[break][break]
Then she clenched a fist in front of her, making a small movement of joy. "Yes!" she exclaimed, a bit too loudly. She suppressed her excitement with a small blush of her cheeks, and she sheepishly rubbed her cheek. "I mean, please. It would be lovely to have some help... Since I am unfamiliar with this territory."

Caius could appreciate someone that wasn't afraid of Vordun and at least treated the dragon with a bit of respect as a living creature, instead of just as a monster. Especially since he didn't go around trying to eat people and all of that. So some points were won there. Even if it was just giggling at his movements as he bumbled and tumbled over like a clumsy horse. The terrain was a little bumpy and the poor thing was still adjusting to it. Once Vordun reached them, Caius reached over to pat him on the head in comfort.
"Alright Selene, why don't you lead the way? I'll try and help if it seems like we're not going in a good direction, but I trust your instincts" Caius suggested, stretching out in turn. He knew somewhat of the creatures though it was possible they looked, acted and fought differently from the ones he was used to, knowing his luck. So it was best that Selene took the lead and went from there. It was likely, if she had been hired to take them on, that she would have had better luck in knowing of them ahead of time. Or perhaps not? With how she seemed to be, it was possible she had been given little to work with at all.
