The button.... The special police alarm button.
It is so close.... If I can just slid to the right a little... without that gunman noticing....
Right. Now to wait.... Ugh I can almost touch it. If I can extend my hand quick.... Oh no no that scary masked swordsman is looking.
...I thought the AVALANCHE are dead?
They had been quiet for almost 2 years now. Without any activity at all. Can't say I've missed them, though I heard they are treated as heroes in the slums.
Yeah. The slums. Been there a few times and, yea, I understand why no one would really live there. My first time there? I was mugged. A few gils only but still....
Oh right. Now I remember. I found a spot where they served food for free and was given direction to there. The lowest of the fares but, yes, at that time it was a blessing. Later time I heard such places were run by the AVALANCHE for free.
Heh. Talk about karma, perhaps?
And now on this fine evening armed soldiers just suddenly barged in. Thought we were finished for the day. Turned out we were in for the long haul. They neutralized our securities with ease. (Yea, there weren't many to begin with. Of course our bosses are typical). There they are now, facing the wall like several of us while others are lying prone like the rest of us. Their guns are now in the soldiers hand. I am one of the bank tellers behind the bulletproof cubicles so yeah, they ordered us to stand so that they'll have easier time shooting our heads off.
But really, do they need guns at all? With that horned swordsman around I bet they can take an entire army division just by themselves.
"Nobody move." was his words. Simple words, really. And delivered none too menacingly.
But if you've seen what he did to that inches thick plated door with just his katana, you won't want to try something funny when he's around.
Then again... he isn't around, right? He is very far in the center of the room while his lackeys are clearly doing something in the back. Others are standing vigilant with their visored masks looking at every movement.
Oh, someone is coming towards him. From the vaults. Have they cracked the passwords already? He turns to listen.... That guard is turning his head too...NOW'S MY CHANCE!!
"..."
Damn. My finger is this close.
But the unmistakable coldness of a blade is pressed on my neck.
I gulp. There. The horned swordsman. Their leader. His blade pressed so close to my carotid artery I can feel it with each heartbeat.
Silently I pray. I don't know to whom.
The swordsman scary mask is so close to my face. With horror I realize that the bulletproof cubicle has been breached so easily.
"I said," his (her?) whisper is loud enough for the whole room to hear, "Nobody move."
I have never heard a tone as cold as that moment ever again in my life.
It made the room as cold as the peak of Mt Hotai.
Elfe let her blade stayed on the brave teller's neck for a little while, making sure that she understood the gravity of the current situation. She had to make sure everyone understand and cooperate. Everything should go smoothly.
Really, some casualties are unavoidable.
But if given a choice, Elfe would prefer it to be minimum.
Fear... She could feel it.
Her skin didn't even touch the teller's skin.
But her fear radiated through her blade, almost like a vibration in the air.
The fear of someone being cornered by her blade.
Hadn't she experienced this somewhere before? The fear of being cornered....
"...!"
A flash of an image.
A raised platform. A starless night sky. An unmistakable atmosphere of being on great height. The plethora of city lights sprawled under her.
Someone was bleeding, limping to the edge. Someone wearing a sleek black suit with matching white shirt.
Was she...about to kill that person?
"...Tch."
Elfe ran his left hand to her face, dispersing the image.
No...this is no time for illusion....
One of the visored soldiers stopped behind her.
"Leader, we have located the vault. But the triple-gated doors are giving us troubles."
Elfe blinked. Right... She was in a middle of an operation.
She turned towards the soldier, her katana finally separated from the teller's neck. She could almost feel her amazement that she was still alive in the air.
"Take me there. And the codes?"
"Are being encrypted as we speak."
"Good. Secure it as soon as we can. Everyone knows where the real money is."
"Not stored in the bank, for sure."
"Feh. Haa a single slash from you is all we need. Ahaha...ahahahaha...."
The hacker who had spent the last half hour trying futilely to open the door snorted in disbelief. Part amazed, part annoyed.
They stood at what was a formidable three-gated door before, forged from strong metal. A door that was said able to take a missile head on and emerged unscathed.
It had been cleaved in two.
Elfe stood before the vault of the Sonora Trust Financial Bank. Its content opening up to the AVALANCHE soldier like daises waiting to be plucked up.
"Search all the vaults. Remember what we came here-"
"Code Ten on channel two. Palm thirty-one and South. All units on red. I repeat-"
Elfe blinked. The other soldiers around suddenly became tensed. The small radio device kept voicing lines, now responded by different voices.
The police were after the building.
She looked at the hacker, who remained somewhat calm despite the sudden shift in atmosphere.
"Quickly. We don't have much time."

And we do have heaters.
