[attr=class, text] “Oh. I still have some business here, so I will have to turn down your offer for now. But, I wish you luck in your endeavors.” She politely declined his offer. Tundras of Sonora. Well that was new. It sounded like she would need to prepare for that cold eventually. A parka she did not have. Though magic would help, it would certainly not be comfortable. Thus it would be an endeavor better saved for later. For now, she should stick to what she was good at and find places of learning to get her up to par of the current state of affairs for the world. [break][break]
Quistis couldn’t really comment. She had no idea where Caius was from or the fauna there. Wherever it was, it sounded like he was in the same boat she was. She tilted her head to the side. Perhaps, she was over-analytical, but she would have done a little more to prepare for the mission. It sounded like he scouted for them, but he did not watch them long enough to know what they did. Libraries and talking to hunters may have been able help to uncover more information.
[break][break] But winging it was okay too. “I have some reflection magic in reserve. Just in case.” Not a lot of it. But it would have to do. She only nodded, “I am surprised the animals haven’t caught our scent being so close.” She supposed the wind was blowing just right to avoid detection. If not, it would be hard to surprise them.
[break][break] Quistis drew her brows together. No formal training in the gunblade? Using one was already difficult to use effectively and dangerous without formal training and dangerous. Either he was quite talented or he needed some more training to not hurt himself. However, if he was fighting for a living, he sounded more like the former. “If Squall or Seifer were here, they could give you better pointers than I. I can help you shore up your form, if you wish.” She did not want to go around giving unsolicited advice if it wasn’t wanted. And it was probably best if it was Squall. She was sure Seifer would be quite uncordial in his assistance.
[break][break]
She just gave a humble shrug at his complimentary observation. She was not one to toot her own horn. Instead, she turned to her attention to his demonstration. It seemed the object throwing was part of the warping ability and then there was an after image and he was gone. Fascinating. Her eyes turned up to look up and watch him disappear over the ledge of the spot he picked. Then, after some time, he came back to wave. Should she move so as not to be hit by the dagger he needed to throw? But it seemed there was no need.
[break][break] He seemed to just materialize right in front of her. She seemed a little surprised with a soft, “Oh.” With widened eyes, she just nodded. “I see. A useful ability.” Not one that she particularly was aware about it until just now. Fascinating. The closest she had seen to this were with the sorceresses, but even then this seemed different. “Glad you are on my side in this fight.” She said in good humor.
Then he offered her a flower. She seemed a little confused at the sudden offer of one. “Oh. That's very sweet of you. Thank you.” She said politely and smiled back. “I mean. I simply decided to show up. But it is very pretty.” She pushed her hair back and placed the stem behind her ear. Otherwise she might end up crushing it in the scuffle. “How do I look?”
Then she nodded in the original direction they had been heading. “Let’s go fight some leopards.”

Caius didn't seem bothered by her decision to turn his offer down. He was perfectly used to the peace and quiet of fishing alone with Vordun, so it didn't bother him any. While fishing with additional company, and especially someone he'd like to get to know, would be nice... If it intruded on her time and her busy schedule, then he'd rather leave her to that. So he shrugged his shoulders. "Another time, perhaps" he responded casually and left it at that.
Caius had done some reading, and had an idea of what they might be, but he wasn't able to stay at the libraries for long, and many of the hunters around were a little fidgety around strangers, which didn't surprise him. A certain daemon with a hat had run roughshod here not long ago, bringing a plague and death with him. He knew a stranger's extended time in the library area wasn't welcome, so he had left before too long and cross referenced with his own notes. They sounded similar to creatures from his own world... But he had decided he'd rather get the job done today instead of coming back later to do further research. In a way, the challenge of knowing some and not knowing others was a little bit exciting. So he didn't mind too much.
He still would have watched them if he could though, but he didn't want to risk getting too close and initiating combat too early. Quistis observed that it was a surprise they hadn't been caught by now. "They likely will if we get too close, but... As-is, it's likely the Starscourge in the town nearby" Caius brought up. "The scent is incredibly strong, it's made tracking difficult for Vordun too. Gets easier the further away from civilization you get, but creatures with sensitive noses seem to have a hard time using their senses. They'll still know if you get too close though. Or make yourself easy to spot. That's why we didn't just fly there."
She offered to help shore up his form, if he wished. He smiled slightly as he nodded his head. "I'd like that, thank you" he responded curtly. Caius had spent years practicing with the weapon, but he knew full well that he was winging it. If someone who was experienced with the blade in some fashion professionally could give him some pointers to work from, Caius wasn't going to say no to potentially improving his capabilities with the gunblade.
He smiled as she placed the flower behind her ear. "Beautiful" he spoke warmly as she asked how she looked. With that in the box, it was time to get to the fighting. When they were close enough to see them, he slowed his pace. Vordun's annoyed expression indicated that they were still in range to where their senses would be impeded. Caius strained to try and see them...
There were at least six. Two were fighting over a corpse, looked to be an animal. It seemed they had turned this area into hunting grounds, and if he was to guess, their new hunting grounds were too close to farmland, thus the reason for his being hired. Others seemed to be sniffing about, though he wasn't sure if they were having any success. Considering they'd managed to find something though... Caius didn't want to risk lingering too long.
"It's probably best we strike quickly, just in case. Any ideas, Quistis?" he inquired. "I was thinking starting with magic might work best. Gives us the opening shot before they fall on us."
It seemed that this Starscourge was not only a blight on human health, but it also has a strong scent too. At least to the noses of animals. She would have to remain wary of this pandemic. A small frown formed on her lips at this news and looked down at the large cats that prowled in their territory. There was a beauty to them from here. If Quistis had a choice, she’d have preferred to let them be. But, if they were being a nuisance to the folks, she guessed she had no choice. [break][break]
She smiled back at him for his compliment. Flowers and kind words right before a job seemed oddly timed, but she simply went with the flow. This was his mission to lead, not her’s after all. Minds as well have a good time. [break][break]
Quistis looked back to the coeurls enjoying their meal. Caius asked for her opinion and she studied the wild cats. “If you think magic is best...I can dual cast.” She stated as she mulled over her thoughts. “A gravity spell to pull them in and then follow up with a Stop spell.” Though, she was trying to reserve her spells. She didn’t know the locations of draw points to pull from them in this world. “If you don’t mind, I will set to work then.”
[break][break]
She stood up on the ledge the magic shimmered about her feet before raising to sparkle in the air around her. She thrust a hand out and a dark orb appeared in the middle of the six couerl. They were all sucked in together. Before one could even take a second breath, another spell was clouded upon them. The sound of a clock turning back seemed but a whisper in the air. Some of the cats were frozen in place, their whiskers only disturbed by the wind. But two seemed slugging and were shaking off the effects.
[break][break]
“Act quickly.” She nearly commanded, she was already rushing forward as well, her whip in hand.

It was a scent that Caius was all too used to. Even if he wasn't an animal, he still knew it very well and could identify it even from miles away. He was just lucky that he didn't have the strong smell to where it would almost never go away without crossing a very large distance. It made it very difficult to go to Provo, considering the memories he had of dealing with the scourge and the impact it had on his people. If not for his job, he'd probably never go here. Couldn't someone take care of this blasted plague already? He was no healer, or he would have done the damn job himself just to rid himself of ever having to see the blasted thing again.
Luckily, by the time he next returned to Provo, his prayers would be answered.
To be honest, Caius felt the same in that if it were his choice, he'd leave the creatures alone. But as unfortunate as it was, they were hurting people. Not many in Provo had the money to burn to post a job for killing monsters unless they were clearly causing serious problems and were a threat to not just the lives of the people, but potentially even Provo's stability. Caius understood necessity, and necessity was the reason why he had been hired here. If there had been a better way of handling this, he was sure he wouldn't have been hired to exterminate the monsters. Something was keeping them coming back here and continuing to cause problems. If there was a way for him to just drive them off...
But as it was, he would do what he had to do. Quistis said she could duel cast, one spell after the other in quick succession. That indicated she was a skilled magic user. Interesting. He'd be watching that closely. But in general really, he was just excited to see Quistis in action.
She made her move. It had begun.
He watched in awe as she combined her spells, their firing one after the other as though they were one. The end result was the felines crowded together, before being all stopped in place. It was a perfect scenario for Caius to act. When Quistis called for action, Caius had already drawn his blade and warped forwards. "FIRA!" he called quickly, calling down a fireball onto the ground before landing, quickly slashing at one of them. He aimed for vitals, hoping to end this quickly without too much suffering on the end of the felines. He warped to and fro in quick succession, getting in what shots he could. When he started to sense small bits of movement, he loaded the gunblade and fired at the one furthest away from him.
Time started to wind once more, and the remainder were looking to swarm. But as they pounced, Caius warped backwards. Leaving them open to be flanked by Vordun. The drake didn't hesitate, unleashing a fiery breath that took advantage of the monsters being close together. Quistis had employed a strategy almost too perfect for Caius and Vordun's dynamic.
Caius returned to Vordun's side just as the coeurls began to split up and circle and stalk them, likely hoping for a flank of their own. There weren't anywhere near as many anymore, and the remainder were fairly battle damaged. Hopefully they would be able to outlast them.
It was good to see Caius not hesitate. He was ready to go before she could even take her next breath. He was quick with his spell and faster with his warping. His first attacks were strong with exploding fire that seared both the felines and ground alike. Even his strikes seemed precise, and quick. Even with his dragon companion he worked in harmony. She did not know their full history, but it seemed the two had many battles together. [break][break] She waited to join in lest she get burnt. Where he and his dragon worked in unison, she had not trained with them to know each other's methodologies. [break][break] But, he started in the middle. A perfect spot to get surrounded as the coeurls awoke from her spells. Seemed like it was time for her to pounce herself. Already laying in wait, she lunged forward. Quistis lashed one with the bite of her whip. The electrical current from her whip bit into the first feline paralyzing it. She extended one hand out to employ a fireball in its face. It twitched then died as she stepped over it. [break][break] One couerl was laying on its stomach in duress, it’s whiskers floating about its face in some ethereal wind. Then a ball of light sparked in front of it. Quistis’s whip snapped out to try to jerk the couerl’s neck back as she stood behind it. However, it seemed to resist her pull to break its concentration. Her boots dug into the ground as she grounded herself. “You need to MOVE.” She shouted at Caius. The blast ability was one of the coeurl’s most powerful attacks. It snarled at her as it resisted, but eyes were focused on Caius. Without warning, a laser from the orb in front of the feline shot at Caius and Vordun. [break][break] Out of the corner of her eye, she saw another smaller couerl prowl out of the bushes. Without letting go of the tension of her whip, she drew on her magic. The space around her lit up in ethereal magic and her hair seemed to float about her face. She unleashed her spell and the creature seemed to rise up off the ground. In a flash of light, the creature disappeared and a card fell back to the ground in its place.

Quistis telegraphed her moment and struck at exactly the right time to do so. Just as the felines were wholly focused on the man and his drake, Quistis took the opportunity to flank when she saw it. It didn't take very long for the coeurls to start dropping. Caius felt bad that it had to come to this, but it was what it was. Hopefully at least this would ward off any other potential members of their herd from returning here. If they weren't hurting anybody, then hopefully peace would result. At least a little more often anyway. There was no truly quelling the desire for violence in the hearts of man and beast.
Another was struck down quickly, as Caius aimed for vitals and did his best to end this as quickly and painlessly as possible for both sides. That was when Quistis suddenly called over the sound of battle, exclaiming that they needed to move. Caius didn't hesitate. Placing a hand on Vordun's shoulder, he didn't look at where they were going. He just knew he needed to move upwards. Caius and Vordun both disappeared as he expended some energy to warp the both of them up. Caius quickly climbed on Vordun's back as the drake took flight, hovering above them as Caius stared down to see when it was safe to land again.
It was there that one of the creatures shot a laser blast at them from out of nowhere. Caius quickly leapt off Vordun, projecting a barrier in front of himself to absorb the attack. Quistis had acted, and appeared to have turned the creature into a card, he noticed. He'd have to ask about that after the battle, but for the time being, adrenaline was taking over. There were still a few left, and Caius surged forward the moment he landed via Warp. As the remainder tried to flank them and pounce once more, Caius plunged his blade through the chest of one, his eyes slowly changing as he fell into the flow of battle. It continued snarling at him, and he summoned one of his daggers, quickly pointing it at a vital and firing. It appeared his pure gunblade wasn't the only one he had, though the daggers had less punch behind their shots. It was enough though, there was no need to use the main one. At this point the rest finally seemed to get the point that this place was not safe. As they fled, Caius allowed his weapons to disappear.
"They won't return to this nest. Any new ones will be far from here. They seem intelligent enough to know it's not wise" he commented, watching as Vordun landed beside them. He reached over to scratch behind Vordun's ears, though Caius' expression didn't change. He wouldn't lose that stone-faced battling edge for a bit longer. His weapons could re-appear at any moment if they needed to. After a few moments, he turned to Quistis, looking to the card she had formed with a curious eye.
"You can turn monsters into cards? Is there a function to them?"
Quistis could feel the heat of the blast and watched as the coeurl’s fur rippled with its breeze. She turned her face away from the resulting bright light and closed her eyes, without letting go of her hold on the large cat. When she opened them again, it seemed Caius had heeded her warning. Thank goodness he was quick in his reflexes. He was already moving to finish off what was left, the rest scattering. [break][break] She finished off the coeurl she had with quick lashes. It’s weighted end cracking it’s skull and tearing apart its flesh. The creature snarled and then the jolting bite of her whip caused it’s heart to fail. Junctioning magic to one’s weapon was such a useful tool. [break][break] Finishing up with her work, she walked over to the card she created and knelt down to pick it up. The person she was shadowing soon approached her. He seemed to have such an odd look on his face, perhaps of one who’s fought too often. “Let us hope they won’t return. Hopefully they weren’t protecting something important here… Or sometimes when human’s encroach on their land they get displaced. Hopefully, neither is the case.” Sometimes these creatures have no choice but to thrive in dangerous places, even for themselves. [break][break] Standing up, a hand would come to dust herself off. She placed the whip coiled on the hook at her hip. Then, she observed the card she created. “I can turn monsters into cards.” She confirmed with a smile. “But only at certain moments. This is my first attempt in this world. I’m surprised it worked.” She handed the item to him. “Unfortunately, I already have this one. You can keep it.” His question was mulled over in regards to its function. “It is for a card game from my home, called Triple Triad. I’ve yet to run into anyone that plays it here. I miss playing it dearly.” [break][break] Straightening her pouch and belt, she finally placed her hand on her hip. “I guess you get to go collect that bounty. This should be where we part ways. Thank you for letting me shadow.” It was a gentle farewell.

The job was done, then. Caius wasn't the biggest fan of what they had to do, but this was his job. Hopefully the coeurls would stay away from the area going forward. He let out a long breath as he tried to re-regulate himself, get himself back to a more... Civilian base, so to speak. Quistis brought up her hopes that they wouldn't return, and he agreed. It would be a shame if they had killed so many for nothing. He hoped this would drive the remainder to a place safer for everyone. They may be monsters, but so long they weren't actively hurting anyone, they were just as much a living creature as anything else.
Quistis answered his question with the revelation she could turn monsters into cards at certain moments, for a card game that she used to play back in her world. A card game using monsters they'd turned into cards? How... Bizarre. But she would soon hand the card to him, citing she had one like it already. While surprised, he appreciated the gift nonetheless, even if it was a bit disturbing to think about the idea that this had once been a living creature. "Thank you, I'll cherish it" he spoke softly as he took it and carefully put it away. He'd display it somewhere, perhaps. Safely, so as not to bring indignity to the life that had been taken to create it.
But with that, Quistis appeared to have no intentions of accompanying him back to town, which meant it was time for the two of them to part ways. He gave a warm smile before following with a half-bowed salute, hand on his heart. "Thank you so much for the help, Quistis. I wish you a safe journey, and hope that our paths will soon cross once more" he bade farewell, before he scratched behind Vordun's ears as the drake lowered his head to let him come aboard. He'd offer to take her back, now that they could fly without being found out by the coeurls, but she had indicated this was where they part ways, and he would respect her wishes.
Soon enough, the drake was in the air. He bade her adieu, hopefully just for now.
