Finally, she was out of those suffocating woods. She gave a soft sigh as she looked back at it. The higher the full moon rose, the smaller the trees seemed to sink. It was like the woods wanted to trap and smother you inside its confines. She much preferred the cheery and beautiful Wanderwood to whatever this place was. She took a deep breath of the comforting country air. It was almost reminiscent of Balamb, but without the ocean breeze.
But once she turned, she noticed a figure not too far from her. His silhouette was shadowed by the forest, but the moonlight glinted off his knife. After that, everything seemed to happen so quickly. He ran at her with the intention of stabbing and incapacitating her. Perhaps she looked an easy target from the rough greasy haired bandit's perspective. But, before he could even gain ground close enough to her, her whip cracked in the crisp air. The tips bit at his thick, hairy wrist, causing him to drop the knife. Much like a snake reaching out and biting its pray, the whip coiled around his wrist. Quitis pulled the whip tight causing him to stumble forward toward her, and then with a quick motion she stepped down on the whip’s tension, causing him to completely lose balance and fall.
Despite her looks, she was no easy prey. She looked down at him with cold, blue eyes and clicked her tongue in disapproval. Her whip was back on her belt and her hands on her hips. She then gave him a good boot to the head and knocked him out cold. No point in dawdling. She had much to see.
Leaving the attacker behind, she continued into what looked like a farm. It was night, so no people seemed to be tending to the fields. Probably wise, considering the danger she just encountered. The fields seemed to be full of wheat and corn, ripening for harvest. The scarecrow seemed to simply be a sad perch for the sleeping birds. But she soon heard a stream of running water, and soon she found the dam. It was a massive structure that the road ran along its length. She pondered at it, taking in the site. Was this one used for something other than redirecting water? It seemed a little more complicated.
Apparently this was quite the fishing spot. Fish had been flocking here like mad lately, he had been told by a man in town. Of course, it was wholly possible he was stricken with plague and was just delirious, but Caius tried to remain optimistic. By the time he had reached Provo, he and Vordun had found their fish reserves running low. Caius had asked around, while Vordun had been off procuring a bit of in-the-meantime food for himself, and had been made privy to the particular spot. Near the dam, he was told. He remembered.
Caius had returned the spot in the night, deciding Vordun could use some time to settle, and Caius really didn't want to force Vordun to go elsewhere just for him to catch more fish, when he had already sent Vordun away once while he was in town. With not many up and about at this time of night, he hoped they would be able to fish in peace and quiet, without being a bother to anybody.
And so, Caius and Vordun had plonked down near the dam, with fishing equipment in tow. Caius was resting on his side, using the horse-sized drake's body as a pillow while the lizard was curled up next to him. They had caught a few, the old guy hadn't been wrong about the efficiency of the spot. As he lazed about after casting his line, he couldn't help but look toward the massive structure nearby. It wasn't like any dam he'd seen before, but it was the closest thing to one around. Provo and its assets were still a mystery to him. He didn't come around here enough. The stench of the Starscourge was enough to keep him away. But maybe he'd ask around in the morning...
The sound of footprints would cause Caius to jerk upwards, rousing himself into a sitting position. Vordun lazily cocked his head up, having eaten most of the fish they had caught so far and had decided to take a nap at some point before this.
"Blast" Caius muttered under his breath. If one of the townsfolk came around and saw Vordun, it might cause a panic... But there wasn't enough time for Vordun to fly away without alerting them either. Perhaps if he just stayed down, wings curled in... He would be able to blend into the dark. Caius' gaze darted about, looking for the source of the noise.
She took careful footsteps along the dirt path. Her eyes looking over the grayness of the dam in the moonlight. She came to realize the lights inside were still lit. It was almost like a metal sky. That was interesting. It appeared this dam contained some sort of life inside of it. Was it a large home too? Or did the machinery inside it simply light up. She became so lost in her thoughts that she almost did not notice Caius. In fact, simple curiosity made her want to just walk up to it and politely peek inside a window.
However, the sudden movement and rustling of Vordun turning into a ball, as well as Caius’s sudden looking about, alerted her. She had already been attacked once. She pulled her whip taunt in both hands, her eyes searching for the source of sound and movement. “Hello?” She called out. She was not immediately aggressive, but she was certainly ready for a fight if there is one. “I didn’t mean to disturb you.” She tried again, but more cautiously. Maybe it was a friendly that could help her figure out what she wandered into.
She took cautious steps in the direction she thought the suspicion originated from. Her boots crunching the healthy grass by the river side. “I’m looking for a place to stay for the night. Is there a town past this dam? Or even in the dam?” Her words were soft as she placed one hand on her hip as she believed the round shadow, she glimpsed was what she was looking for. Maybe she was just bothering the local homeless? She waited patiently for a response. If she was bothering someone, they would tell her to bugger off. The breeze ruffled her hair and brought with it the fresh scent of the outdoors. A small perk of traveling of course.

When the source of the noise called out, indicating they were a friendly, Caius took a deep breath to settle himself. He would sit up straight and called out back to them. "There is! I can guide you over, just need a minute!"
It seemed more practical to just guide them to town, instead of doing anything that might invite suspicion. They could always come back to the fishing spot later, after all. With that, he would lean to Vordun as he packed up his fishing gear. "As soon as we're out of sight, make your move. Meet you on the rocks later" He spoke quietly to Vordun, patting the drake on the head as he would get to his feet. His fishing gear would disappear in a blue light once he had made his way about halfway between the river and where he had heard the voice. Holding up a hand, he would summon Fire and use his palm as a torch until he was able to catch sight of a young woman. Walking over, he greeted her with a warm smile.
"My apologies if I startled you at all. I didn't think anyone would be travelling in the area at this time of night" He admitted softly. The woman didn't look like she was someone that would cause any harm, though the whip in her hand indicated that she had likely been ready for a fight. It could mean a number of things, really, but he tried to remain optimistic that she was just being guarded at this time of night, especially when visibility was poor.
"Town's this way, I'll guide you to the inn" He promised as he would start walking. The sooner they were out of sight of the dam, the sooner that Vordun could scramble through the darkness and become incognito. Both out of wanting to be polite, and to keep her from potentially looking back toward Vordun, he decided to ask a quick question. "I don't think I caught your name, did I?"
When the person actually called out, she felt most of the tension leave her body. To try to look less threatening, she moved to put her whip back on its clip at her side. She waited patiently, her eyes studying the dam once more and her arms crossed. Perhaps when she got a good rest, she would come out and explore a little more. It would be interesting to learn of the culture of the people and how the city operated.
She heard some rustling and perhaps whispering. She raised a brow. Had she interrupted this man enjoying the night with a close companion? She felt a little guilty. She didn’t mean to break up whatever reunion he was having with a possible interest. Perhaps it was best to be quick and let him go back to what he was doing.
When he came closer, she studied him for a moment. His fashions were not too different from her own, though it certainly was not a uniform she seen before. He did not have that ominous aura the earlier guy gave off. He still seemed young in his ears, and if anything, he seemed earnest. She raised her hands and waved them in a need to wave off his apology. In its place she offered her own, placing a hand on her chest, “The apology is mine. I interrupted your late-night activities, after all. Thank you for taking time out of your night.”
She turned to follow him, and she cocked her head to the side, “Oh. It’s Quistis. And your name?” A warm smile spread across her lips. She noticed they were leading away from the dam and she raised a brow. “Can you tell me a little about this town? I’m new in these parts and am eager to know what I can about it before the morning.”

The woman seemed polite enough, apologizing for interrupting his late-night activities. He shook his head though, giving a gentle smile as he refuted the notion. "You didn't interrupt anything big. I was just fishing. It's less busy in this area at night and I like the quiet" He spoke up, wanting to quickly purge any guilt she might be feeling at the sudden appearance. And he had been telling the truth about his activities anyhow. He did like fishing in quiet nights. He had just conveniently omitted that he hadn't been fishing alone.
He studied her a moment. Her garb pegged her as possibly a traveler. Maybe an adventurer, or even a mercenary like himself? If he was to hazard a guess between the garb and the whip, she was another warrior from a different world who had been transported here and was looking for a place to belong. Or perhaps she had already found it? If he had the chance to question her about her activities, he would take it.
She would respond to his question with her name, and he smiled. Quistis, it was foreign to anything he'd heard before. With the heavy emphasis on the "Ees", maybe she was from Celes' world, or somewhere similar? More questions, and no clue if he would be able to get the answer to any of them, as she would likely want to shack up in the inn once he alerted her to its existence. That was his guess, anyway.
"Caius" He responded warmly when she asked for his name, holding out a hand to shake. "A pleasure."
Something else that the torch revealed was her youth, straight off. Caius was taken off-guard for a moment by the stark contrast between her voice, her usual tone and her clear age. She was even younger than he was, if he was to hazard a guess. She came off as one who had experience beyond her years. That was something Caius could attest to personally.
She asked about the town, which he had expected after she had indicated she didn't know where it was. "Honestly, this is my first time in this particular town as well, I just blew in this morning" He admitted. "Seems like most of the towns that make up Provo though. People working hard to make a living through any means at their disposal. Doubly so with the Starscourge putting a lot of people in sickbed" He elaborated, going with the general statement of Provo's towns first since she had indicated she was new to the area. She could just mean this town, but he would feel bad if he didn't make sure, so he tried to make it short and sweet. "As for this town itself, the people seem nice enough, albeit many of them are pretty constantly busy. A kind young woman was the one who recommended me to that area for fishing. I've seen some shops, general goods. Some food vendors, mainly produce. There's a bathhouse, though it doesn't get as much use as it used to, by what I've been hearing. There's a blacksmith toward the north end of town, and there's an inn toward the center of town, if you're looking for a place to stay until morning."
He thought for a moment on if he had forgotten anything, before deciding to entrust her with the question. "Is there anything you might looking for in particular?" He asked. While she seemed to just want general knowledge, it seemed right to ask.
Fishing? Is that what kids called it these days? She looked out to the river. Or perhaps he really had been fishing. But she did not see any bounty of fish. “Did you cash any? Or nothing was biting tonight?” She asked curiously. Maybe she would need to get her some food later. Too bad Seifer was not here. He would have loved this quiet spot too, though he had poor luck at catching anything with his impatience. It was a reminder she was no longer near Balamb.
She gave a smile, “It, too, is a pleasure to meet you, Caius.” She said reaching out a hand and giving a firm shake with a leather glove. Then she gestured for him to go ahead and lead the way. He had the light and the knowledge of where to go after all.
“Provo…” She said curiously and tried to place this new location on her mental map. She would need to get supplies soon to start journaling down the information and create a map. That would be the best way to understand the layout of the town. However, she drew her brows together. “Starscourge? What type of illness is that? Are they in need of aid?” Perhaps she should see if she could find some way to keep herself well. Or maybe she could find a way to help the people here. She was no doctor, but maybe she had something to offer in the way of medical knowledge.
She quietly listened to explanation, trying to memorize every word. And she only gave a nod. “Well, I am immediately looking for an inn, then perhaps a bath when I’m settled. But I guess come morning…” She paused for a moment. What was she looking for? Zell was looking for a way home and was sorely disappointed at the Crystalus Divider. She simply wanted to find herself. That was no easy feat. But, first thing was first, which was getting money to sustain herself in the mean time. “Perhaps I could look for a bit of temporary work. Maybe learn something about the people while I’m here.” She was always up for learning something new.
As they followed along the river, buildings began to become more visible in the distance. Followed by streams of torch light. “What about you? Any reasons you are just passing through? Or are you just wandering to wander?”

"Just started, actually. No luck so far. I'll take the young lady's word about it being a good spot though, so I'll probably go back later" He admitted with a casual shrug, unaware that Quistis was considering the idea that he was speaking of a completely different kind of fishing. It was true that she had interrupted their fishing trip before they could really get out of the box in their endeavor, but Caius had accepted the risks in trying to sneak out to the river with Vordun. This was better than having to deal with frightened villagers, who were already paranoid enough without a dragon threat.
He smiled gingerly as she shook his hand. She seemed nice enough. He wouldn't trust her enough to show her a dragon in the middle of a village, but that wasn't her fault. There weren't many that he would in these circumstances. Maybe if they weren't so close to the village. He just couldn't risk an incident right now. Her grip was firm. A fighter, that was clear. Her whip from earlier made that obvious enough, but he didn't want to assume straight off. Her grip strength lended more evidence to her past, at least. More to build on.
He wasn't too surprised when she would inquire about the Starscourge, and he let out a sigh as he scratched his head. "They need as much aid as they can get pretty much everywhere in this region. The Starscourge doesn't seem to have a cure at present, and eventually turns people into monsters. But different people pop in from different worlds all the time. I'm hoping eventually someone might have a remedy" He admitted. He neglected to mention that the affliction originated from his own world.
He listened to what she was looking for, nodding his head. Inn, bath, and work? Perfectly reasonable things. "Well, there's an inn and a bathhouse here, so you'll certainly have those covered. As for work... That's actually why I'm here" He admitted, referring to her last question. "I'm a mercenary. I typically fight bandits and monsters, and I get plenty of both around Provo. Lots trying to take advantage of everything going on for their own gain" He explained as the lights would become more evident. They were out of sight of their original spot now. Vordun would have likely slunk through the grass by now and then flown off once he was far enough. While Caius and Vordun were a pair, Vordun was intelligent enough to manage an escape. "I operate out of the Dragonblades guild in Torensten though. Might be worth checking out if you're ever looking for something similar. As for my purpose here in particular... I'm taking a job in the area, but my meat reserves are running a little low. Thought I'd fish before I get moving again."
“I take it if there is no cure, then they are quarantining the ill and trying to ease their symptoms?” However, she was a little surprised that it turned people into monsters. You would think it was less shocking than monsters coming from the moon in her world. Or even sorceresses passing their powers to another person. “What kind of monsters?” Was it like something from a book? Such as vampires or werewolves? “Perhaps if they do not bring a cure, then maybe a great mind will be able to help create one.” She was no doctor, but it sounded similar to finding a cure for a zombie outbreak.
She listened to his advice and gave an appreciative smile. “Oh? The Dragonblades.” She repeated thoughtfully. “And how does it operate? I assume a portion of the proceeds I make from contract work goes to the guild? Is there a pool of money and everyone gets paid equally or based on Rank?” The latter was how Balamb Garden paid based on rank in periodic intervals. They also took care of all your needs and jobs were assigned accordingly. “I am interested in such organizations. It sounds similar to where I was working before I came here.”
She tilted her head curiously, arms crossing her chest. “Your meat reserves?” That was a strange way to put that he was low on food. Maybe he had some sort of fitness diet? He did seem in shape. “You couldn’t go to the market here and buy some to tide you over until you catch some? Or find a tavern for a bite?” Maybe these people were less likely to sell to outsiders? It was also possible he was simply saving his money. “Where does one find a job here?” Jobs used to just fall on her lap. “I could help with your job. My way of saying thank you for helping me. Or maybe treat you to dinner?”

Caiius scratched his head as Quistis would continue the questions about the starscourge. He wasn't surprised she was asking about it, considering it was a plague that was turning people into monsters. But it still made him a tinge uncomfortable considering where it originated. Unfortunately, he wasn't sure if he could keep that part under his hat for much longer. "Looks like they are, yeah. There's no known cure, at least not yet. I'm hoping they find one" He answered. He did not like the idea of daemons running around and overtaking Provo. He would give almost anything to never have to see that again. "They're called daemons, the things they turn into, I mean. They have no real sense of humanity or much in rational thought, they're mindless, sadistic beasts who grow stronger in the night. Rumor says they drag people underground with them and then suddenly, there are more of them."
Caius gave an unintentional shudder. It was a bit out of character for anything to make Caius physically shudder considering what he had been through, and how calm and composed he typically was, but daemons? These were bad memories up the wazoo. Caius was thankful when the topic turned to the Dragonblades. Quistis continued asking questions -- he noted how inquisitive the woman was -- but at the least, these were questions he was more comfortable answering. His face, which had paled a bit when talking about the daemons, began to regain a bit of its color as his expression lightened. He enjoyed discussing the Dragonblades. "Mercenaries who specialize in honorable jobs. Monster hunts, dealing with bandits, finding lost people, things like that. The leaders refuse to allow any dirty or dishonorable jobs, both out of their moral codes, as well as knowing that a guild with a sullied reputation will hurt the livelihoods and income of its members. We take the idea of taking care of each other seriously, as well as the idea that one of us screwing up and doing something horrible could cause harm to our makeshift family.
As for proceeds..." He trailed off, considering his words a moment. Celes was always better at relaying the finer details, but he knew the rules by heart by now. Still, always good to know how to phrase them. "You're right that a portion of what you make from jobs goes back to the guild. That goes into the pool which will help pay for issuing supplies to members, as well as upkeep on our bases of operations to give them a place to sleep if they need it. As well as other basic needs if necessary. You are paid based off how much your jobs pay. No member ranks, if you work your way up to bigger jobs, then a percentage of that is rightfully yours. You can either take work independently, or wait for one to come in that might interest you. The main job of the two co-leaders is to accept jobs for the guild and handle any associated paperwork, ensure the place is kept up, instruct inexperienced members if the need arises, and they commonly go out and handle jobs themselves to add to the pool and get out the reputation of the guild. Helps them get more work for their members if they're out there repping the flag."
Quistis had brought up her interest in these sorts of organizations, stating she had some history in something similar. "What was your old job like?" He inquired quickly. She asked about why he didn't just buy meat to tide them over. Oh, she was a sharp one. Caius liked her. He made a mental note that he was going to have to watch what he said in the future with her. Still, he didn't need to lie to answer that one. "I could, but I enjoy fishing so thought it couldn't hurt to try and catch a supply. Give my aching body a rest, as I tend to travel pretty far. Also easier on gil. I would have gone to the market before I left if my fishing didn't work out though."
She asked about where one could find work here. "While mine came directly from the guild's requests, most villages I've seen have boards for these kinds of things. Might be worth looking at if you need the gil" He advised. Though he was surprised at her offer to either help him with his job, or treat him to dinner, and he blinked a few times before he chuckled lightly. "Oh no, you don't have to do that. It was a small thing" He promised. "I won't say no if you want to help out with the job, though I'd certainly try and find a way to repay you for the help if you do."
He didn't mind taking aid on the job. If she reacted poorly to Vordun and ran off back to the village, he would be long gone by the time she started screaming to the villagers about a dragon. But she didn't strike him as the type.
