Quietly, blue eyes studied him as he spoke. Something about the subject was making him uncomfortable. Perhaps the plague was worse than she thought? Maybe she shouldn’t push him anymore. So, she took in his words and mulled over them thoughtfully. His description made it sound like a very bad case of zombie vampires. What were those? Ghouls? But she would keep these comments to herself. She didn’t mean to make him uncomfortable. She politely pretended she had not noticed his shudder.
She instead began to feed more energy into the more polite conversation of what the Dragonblades were. Mercenaries that specialized in honorable jobs. Interesting. She never got to make those type of decisions at her old job. Someone above her generally worked out the contracts after they relayed the client’s information. The superiors would then assign the appropriate team to handle the job. “That sounds like a lot of pressure on everyone. It certainly is a way to hold everyone accountable.” She said offhandedly. Her team took care of each other, but they also relied on the other to do their portion of the task. But the idea of a family appealed to her.
“I see. So, I keep a small percentage of what I make on jobs? The rest goes to the pool?” At least that was how she was understanding it. “They are in Torensten you say? May have I time to think on it? Is there a trial period?” She did not want to get sucked into a routine. If she did, she may not be able to go on her journey of self-discovery just yet. But, joining may help her at least wet her feet into the ways of this world.
“My old job?” She was surprised he asked. “Ah. I had a job change in the last year or so. I was an instructor to other mercenaries. Eventually, my job shifted to simply being part of the team itself.” It was not really that simple. Her routine mercenary work soon turned to fighting Sorceresses. “Balamb Garden was a home to both students and those who chose to stay and become full-fledged mercenaries called SeeD. However, the students could always leave and seek other opportunities once they graduated.” It was a little more complex than that, but that should suffice for now.
“Fishing is a fun endeavor. The Garden used to be next to a small fishing town. The boys really enjoyed it.” She could not fault him for his hobbies and saving money. Though it still didn’t quite add up to meat reserves. And catching too much fish when traveling could just lead to rotting fish. But maybe he was just a super hungry guy like Zell was?
“I will have to look for this board then. At least until I decide whether I want to join your guild.” She would need the money soon. Her supply was running low. Plus, it would help her keep her skills sharp. She raised a brow at his surprise and chuckling at her request to aid him. Did she say something strange, “Well if I helped you to repay you for your kindness, then you finding a way to repay me would defeat the purpose of the original intent.” She pointed out and shook her head, much like a teacher.
She gave a sigh as they came upon the inn, he had promised to take her to. “It seems we have arrived.” She said softly, coming to a stop before the entrance. “Thank you again for your help. I wouldn’t want to eat into your profit, so I’ll let you handle your job. Or your fishing endeavors?” She was not sure which he was going to return to. “Whichever it is, I wish you the best on your nightly endeavors.”

Caius would never not be uncomfortable when discussing the Starscourge. It had contributed to the destruction of his life, and had robbed him of not only a childhood, but the chance to grow up with, well, basically anything. Everyday had been a struggle to survive. There was no chance for fun, or time to relax and enjoy life, or to find love or really learn anything. It had made him the combatant he was, but deep down, he knew he would trade it away to have the life he could have had. The life that so many could have had if the darkness hadn't overtaken their very lives. To see it back here now... It terrified him. He had thought it was over, and yet... Here it was again.
Quistis seemed to pick up on his discomfort and he was thankful for the subject change. She asked a few questions from there about the Dragonblades, and he nodded his head along with them. "It's a lot of pressure, but it means everyone's taken care of. A lot of people come in from other worlds and don't have a whole lot of experience in anything but fighting. I was one of them. Knowing that the Dragonblades have been able to give people a place to be, makes me happy."
She was right about the percentages, though he did like to hope that the amount split was reasonable. He had gone over the ideal percentages with Celes a hundred times by now, and had even polled guild members to make sure they were well taken care of with their payment. And Caius didn't take anymore pay than anyone else, and he'd been okay for money so far, so long as he was reasonable with his spending. But then again, he saved often by not spending too much on things he didn't need. It was a force of habit.
She asked if she could think on it, and if there was a trial period, and he shrugged his shoulders. "You're free to offer help to guild members if you want an idea of how we work, sure. Feel free to take as much time as you like. We have a base in Torensten you can visit whenever. One of the two co-leaders should be there most times, and if not, you can always leave a message. "
His question about her old job merited an admission that she had changed her occupation in the last year, but at one point she had been an instructor for a group of mercenaries. That brought a smile from him. Perhaps he should be puzzled by her doing so at that age, but... He knew someone who did just that at around the same age. She then brought up that she transitioned to more just part of the team. She called her old academy "Balamb Garden", home to both students and mercenaries alike. SeeD, she called them. Interesting. That sounded like quite the place.
She brought up that him repaying her would defeat the purpose, and he laughed a bit. "I suppose so. Fair enough" he answered. They arrived soon after, and she stated she didn't want to eat into his profits, or his fishing. He shook his head. "I don't mind. If you want to come along, I'll be just down the hillside in the morning, making preparations" he spoke up, pointing a little ways from the village. "If you happen to catch me before I set out, I'll be thankful for the help. And for your company" he added with a gentle smile. "I'll probably turn in, myself, once I've gone back and packed up properly. It's getting late, and I can resume my fishing endeavors later."
Vordun had already left for shelter, and it wasn't worth it to go and fetch him just to come back and risk it again. Caius contemplated for a moment seeking a place to rest at the inn. But as nice as a soft bed would be, he preferred to keep Vordun company in the night if he could help it. He'd go back and grab the rest of his fishing gear, and leave to meet him once he was done here.
Quistis listened to him explain the Dragonblades. She certainly knew how to fight. That is what she’d been taught to do since she went to Balamb Garden. But she wondered if that was all she was supposed to do in life. She was unsure if she wanted to forever do this as a career. “It sounds like a good starting point for those who are in need of direction.” She conceded to the idea. “It gives people the comfort of familiarity, while helping them support themselves.” She gave a slight smile as he seemed quite content with his work.
“Then I will talk to the people in Torensten and see who I can aid.” She responded in response to his trial period. She could tell by the way he spoke that it wasn’t ideal. Probably wasn’t good for his business and the way profits work. But she was later surprised at his next statement in a proposal to join him tomorrow morning. She already expressed an interest in a trial run and offered assistance earlier. It seemed rude now to turn it down. “Very well. I will see you bright and early.” She offered a smile as she bowed out of the conversation.
She entered the inn and found the innkeeper half awake at the wooden counter. She gave an apologetic smile and shrug. She placed a little gil on the counter and a little more for tending to her so late at night. It was then she settled into her room with her key and headed to the public bathhouse to wash up for the night. Upon her return, the innkeeper had provided some snacks for her at the foot of her door. Perhaps it was for her generosity earlier? She was not complaining. She ate the bread and fruit provided her and retired to bed. She had been more tired than she thought.

Quistis had bade farewell with plans to meet him at the place he had described. Caius meanwhile, had left town as soon as she was inside. He had considered going into the inn and staying for the night to allay suspicion, and because a warm bed would be comfortable, but... Vordun was a higher priority than his own comfort. And Quistis was about to find out about Vordun anyway if she actually followed through with her promise. There was no real point of trying to allay any suspicions from her now.
With that, he had returned to the camp that he had set up for himself and Vordun before their fishing trip. Vordun had already returned there on his orders, and Caius quickly got a fire going. They didn't have any fresh fish to eat, and Caius didn't want to chance being caught again. They'd just have to try again tomorrow night. He hoped that things didn't go wrong before then. Either way, they feasted on what was left of their food reserves before retiring.
Morning came, and Caius was already up bright and early. Vordun was still lazily curled up near the tent, while Caius had been polishing off breakfast. With a sandwich in his mouth, his sword in one hand and a weapon sharpening tool in the other, he looked a bit ridiculous. But it was efficient. It wouldn't be long before they would be heading out to complete the job though. Caius had been keeping an eye toward the horizon meanwhile, curious if he would be able to see Quistis coming. If she was coming, anyway. The fire had been re-lighted to prepare food, and while it had been extinguished since, the smoke would probably still lead her straight to them. That is, if she was intending to keep her word. If she didn't, he would set out eventually anyway. But he did quite hope to see the young woman again. She seemed nice enough.
Quistis had rested quite well. It had been a long time since she was able to actual sleep on a bed. Though she was used to roughing it, she had not been used to doing so for so long. Civilization, even one of a more medieval setting, was welcomed. Her red puffy eyes looked out the window. It would be time soon to get to work. She rubbed her face and slid out of bed. She prepared herself for the day. She pinned her hair up and out of the way and made sure everything was snugged in its appropriate spot on her.
Then off she went as she left the inn and started padding down the cobblestone street. Everything looked so much more different in the daylight. There was a fresh breeze and the sun was dancing its colors at the horizon. She did indeed see the smoke from the campfire burned by Caius. She turned toward it, wondering if he was simply the type that preferred camping. It wouldn’t be long as she quietly padded into the grassy area when she would see him.
She waved her hand in greeting with a warm smile on her face. Her head tilted to the side as she did so, her arms crossing behind her back as she came upon the camp. She spotted the dragon and she stopped in her tracks. Though, she bore no fear or hostility toward the sleeping creature. It looked tamed and if it was hostile, Caius seemed capable enough. Instead, she looked at it curiously. “Well that’s new.” She jested as she took her palce across from him at the fire. She smoothed her skirt neatly under her. Legs folded gently under her before she leaned to the side with her hand to the ground to support her weight. “Is that what lowered your meat reservoir?” She tilted her head toward the dragon.

It seemed that the young woman intended to keep her word after all. Caius saw her from a little ways away and a smile crossed his face in turn. He watched her with curious eyes as she took in what was around her, waiting to see her reaction to the sight of the drake curled up nearby. When her gaze moved to him, she stopped. Seeming to smell a new presence, Vordun's head perked up as the drake turned to stare at her as well. He didn't make any moves, of course, not yet. The reptile, like any hunter, waited to see what she would do.
Caius smirked lightly when Quistis made her quip as he watched her move to sit nearby. She asked her question then, and he laughed a little as he looked to Vordun. "Yes. Yes it is" Casius admitted flat out. "Quistis, this is Vordun. Vordun, Quistis" he introduced quickly as the drake seemed content with knowing that Caius didn't seem to intend to view her as a hostile presence. The drake got up then, moving to sniff at her a little, as if wanting to verify for himself.
"I suppose I owe you an apology, Miss Quistis. I wasn't exactly forthcoming about the details before" Caius admitted, seeing that since she seemed to have proven herself at least capable of keeping her word, he could be somewhat honest with her. "It was Vordun that was with me before. I wasn't sure how you would react, and I didn't want to cause trouble in town by revealing him to you. Wasn't kidding about the lack of our fish reserves as this one goes through meat quickly, but I also just figured he'd enjoy spending time at the river while I catch. Fished under the cover of night so we wouldn't cause any trouble" he then explained. While it was probably obvious by now, and he was sure he was just saying redundant things, but Caius felt it was the honorable thing to do. Not to mention thinking it might help with showing that he did trust her here and now.
Though remembering her interest before, he was sure the job ahead would be the best way to figure out much of her character.
The food consumed and his sword sharpened, he got to his feet. He held out a hand to help her up if she wished it, as well. "With that, are you ready to go?"
“A pleasure, Vordun.” Quistis said politely, though she was unsure if talking directly to a dragon was a thing. Greeting dragons seemed an odd thing to do this early in the morning. Maybe she was still dreaming. The dragon moved to sniff her, and she sat still as she felt the breeze from its nostrils. Nope. Most definitely not dreaming. Was it impolite to pet it? She let Vordun do its sniffing without making any other actions towards it. “Is it okay to touch him?” She said not wanting to offend either party.
She waved a hand to dismiss his apology. “No need to apologize. You had no reason to be forthcoming at all. I simply thought you were with a girl and I interrupted. If anything, I apologize for interrupting.” They were still strangers to each other after all. She looked up at Vordun, “And I’ve devoured bigger when attacked.” Literally. So Quistis was not afraid of Vordun. She could most certainly hold her own if she had to. But she was still debating if being a mercenary was the path she wanted to continue. Had it brought her satisfaction? But this was a question she would have to tackle at a later date.
She waited patiently by the fire until he was ready to go. She took his hand to stand back up. “I am.” She gave him a nod and readjusted the whip on her waist. “I will be honest. I expected a debriefing of the situation prior to going.” She had not really expected to meet his pet and be debriefed about that. Perhaps he was the type that just delved right in? Maybe he was like Zell. “But we can walk and talk.” She said, gesturing for him to lead the way.
“What is your skillset? I want to know how to best work with you on this.”

Vordun sniffed at her for a moment before looking to Caius, as if affirming that she was safe. After that, he seemed perfectly docile and Caius nodded his head when Quistis asked if she could touch him. If she did, the dragon would, perhaps un-dragon-ly, let out what sounded like a rumbly cooing sound at her touch.
She thought he was with a girl? He blinked a few times at that, but otherwise shrugged it off. He didn't know how she would come to that conclusion, or how important "being there with a girl" was, as he didn't understand the context of what she was saying, but it was cleared up now. That was all that mattered, really. "We can always fish tonight before I leave for my next trip. It's no big deal" he reassured her with a gentle smile.
She said something about devouring something bigger, and Caius did try to mentally picture it for a moment, before eventually deciding to just not bring it up.
"The description said large cat-like monsters. I scouted them from a distance before going into town yesterday. Local bestiary calls them coeurls" he brought up when Quistis brought up that she had been expecting a de-briefing, as they got walking. Caius wasn't entirely sure what to expect himself, besides what he had read up. There wasn't as much information on them as he would like, and he wished that he had asked for more information on them when that Selene woman had brought them up. But how was he to know that the very monsters he was here to hunt were the same ones she had been looking for before? Would have made things a hell of a lot easier. But he hadn't been given a real description until he had actually gotten into town. Figures. "Don't recall ever seeing them where I'm from, so I don't know a whole lot besides that they're fleet of foot and aim for the vitals to end things quickly."
She asked about his skillset, and a big smile crossed his face. She may very well be a woman after his own heart. It was practical thoughts like that, that made Caius' heart sing. "I have two sets of weapons. A longsword and a set of daggers. Both of which can fire projectiles" he started with. "I'm capable of warp-based movement, and some limited offensive and healing magic" he then brought up as he motioned to Vordun. "And he can fly and do fire things. Good for a quick getaway too, if we need one. And yourself? I'm very interested in hearing about your own as well."
This was a pretty standard thing for Caius to do, but it was rare someone beat him to it.
[attr=class, text] Certainly seemed odd to meet a dragon first thing in the morning. But, life was full of interesting things. Quistis wanted to see them all. She raised a gloved hand to pet the dragon along its long neck. It was smooth with strong muscles. She did not know dragon’s could make such sounds. It seemed to behave like a dog and coo like a cat. Well, she supposed if it was tamed it would act like a pet of some sort. Seemed like a lot of work to maintain one though. [break][break] “I can’t say I am great at fishing. Though, I’ve always watched the others instead of trying it for myself.” She was good at telling them what bait to use and what type of fish it would catch. But did Zephon have the same fish as her home world? Surely they couldn’t be that different. “What’s the destination for your next trip?” [break][break] She listened to his description of the local monsters they were to look for. “Coeurls? Hmm. I’ve not heard that term before... but the ‘large cat-like monster’ description reminds me of the leopard creatures we called Torama.” Quistis was already lost in her thoughts as to her speculations and conjectures of their target. She reverted back to her teacher tones. “They usually roamed in plains or near water sources. They usually will channel magic through their whiskers while sitting, but once they stand they use an even more powerful blast attack. The longer the fight goes, the more aggressive they get. It’s best to go in with some way to reflect magic.” She then shook her head and shrugged, lifting her palms up. “But then again, I could be wrong. I am not yet acquainted with the fauna here.” Quistis wished she had known this beforehand. She could have shopped for some equipment beforehand. “The ones you scouted, are they far from here?” [break][break] Apparently Caius had plenty of self-esteem. As he was more than pleased to share his own skillset with someone. “Oh. So you have a gunblade? That skill was rare at the Garden.” Only Seifer and Squall remained of those who could wield the gunblade where she was from. She seemed slightly impressed. “Warp-based movement? What does that mean?” She heard of moving fast. Only sorceresses seemed to be able to bend space to their will to warp in her time. Her eyes lingered to Vordun. The dragon’s skill sets were much more the typical ones you expected. [break][break] “Myself? I have been trained to fight with a whip as well as to utilize Guardian Forces to manipulate magic at my will. I can draw magic from certain creatures and locations, as well as distribute it as I see fit. For example, I can junction Bio magic to my whip so that the after effect of its lash causes poison. I can also use magic normally, though I have a finite of uses until I draw more.” She speculated further on her skill set. “I can also turn monsters into cards and items to be refined and used for later.” Plus, there were her abilities bestowed upon her by the Guardian Forces, but a girl could keep a few tricks up her sleeve.

She wasn't afraid of Vordun, or afraid to pat him, so that did earn the young woman a few points with Caius. Vordun liked her, so there was that too. Not that it was hard to get the lizard to like someone most of the time, Vordun was incredibly friendly for what many would refer to as a monster. While terrifying in battle, the Fire Drake was more like an oversized dog outside of it. An oversized dog that, granted, could have an attitude sometimes. The two of them got into it sometimes, and both of them were far too stubborn to back down all that easily.
"You're free to accompany us tonight if you would like, I certainly wouldn't object to your company. I'm sure neither would Vordun" he spoke up cheerily. "As for where we're off to next... We're heading for the tundras of Sonora next, up north. Dragonblades don't have a foothold up there. While it won't be easy with how they're run, figure it can't hurt to try."
Torama, huh? Wherever she was from seemed to call these creatures something different, or perhaps they were different creatures entirely? Leopard-creatures, she called them, so that sounded likely. Perhaps he'd check the library in one of the towns for "Torama" next time he had a chance... It would be worth looking into. "We had cat-like creatures where I came from as well, though I don't have a name for them" he admitted in turn. Coeurls, he would soon find, would be very familiar to him. He also noted how easy the lecture on them came to her. She had clearly practiced this sort of thing many times before. "Magic reflection... I don't think I have anything like that" he mused aloud as he scratched his chin. "Speed will likely be our friend here, if these creatures turn out to be one and the same" he remarked, before answering her questions about the ones he had scouted. "Not far. Decided to camp just a little ways away so we could go on foot and try to surprise them."
She knew the name of his weapon, that was interesting. Apparently it was a rare skill where she came from. But it was interesting to hear that it was a notable skill at all there. It was rare where he came from too, but only because he was harebrained enough to actually try and make it work when many would balk at that sort of thing. Only other person he'd heard of crazy enough to try that kind of thing was that old man from Hammerhead. "I never received any formal training with them, unfortunately. I built them myself and cobbled together a fighting style as I went."
When she asked about his warping capabilities, he thought it over a moment. Hmm... That actually was a pickle, wasn't it? How did he explain that part of his abilities? Most people heard "warp" and were okay with just that, but this one had a desire for detail. He could respect that, he supposed. But how to answer her desire... Hmm... Oh! His head perked up as an idea struck. A practical demonstration! Perhaps of distance? Showing to some extent how far the warping capabilities could go, as well as showcasing how it works, might be the best way to go. Caius had always learned best through example himself, perhaps that would work here too?
For the time being though, he listened to what she had to say about her own capabilities. He was surprised, there was quite a bit to her when it came to combat. Some kind of Guardian Forces, which he didn't know what that was, but it sounded useful. He listened intently as she explained how she could draw magic from things and then use that magic to augment herself and her weapons. It sounded similar to what he could do with his limited magic, but more varied. And more complicated.
That turning monsters into cards thing, though... Wait, what? He blinked a few times as the full scope of this revelation hit him. How did that even work? There were... So many questions he could ask about that, but perhaps later. For now, if it was useful, then that was fine.
"That's quite a varied skillset. You must be quite the experienced combatant" he observed. But there was still one thing that had gone unresolved. "As for my warping... Well, if I'm able to focus on something..." he trailed off as he held out a hand. His gunblade materialized in his hand with a flash of blue light as he looked around, seeking a good opportunity for a practical. His eyes brightened as he noticed the cliff above them seemed to lead somewhere. It wasn't too high up so he could definitely throw something up there, but he'd need to get a little higher in order to actually grab onto something...
That meant the sword was too heavy. The sword disappeared soon after, and a double-sided weapon appeared in its place. Pulling it apart formed a set of daggers, with their own small barrels attached. Sticking one on his belt, he spun the other between his fingers as he tossed it upwards. Letting it reach the height of its flight, Caius let out an exhale as he focused on it, then began to channel his magic. With an afterimage forming behind him, Caius vanished as he warped forwards at high speeds, re-appearing in the air above his dagger. Catching it, he did his best to move in the air (Figuring oneself out after popping into existence in another spot entirely isn't easy) as the blonde planted his hands onto the clifftop and pulled himself up. To his surprise, the area was more grass than rock, and he was greeted with a small glade of flowers around a little lake. Peering down into the depths, he could make out the outlines of fish.
"Huh... This might not be a bad fishing spot, actually" Caius mused, rumbling to himself about how much easier it would be to fish away from the town, before remembering why he was up here. As he turned to face where he had came, he stopped when he realized he had almost stamped on a flower. Stopping his stomp in the middle, he thought back a moment... People tended to give others flowers as gifts or something like that, right? Considering he had dragged her out here in the morning, he supposed it couldn't hurt to try to put a smile on the woman's face before they went to battle. Show of good faith and all that. And it did have coloring that resembled her own, so perhaps it'd help her mood. Morale always helped in a battle, after all. Something he picked up from being a soldier and running a mercenary guild.
Picking the orange flower as gently as he could with his large, creased hand, Caius stepped away from the field and looked for a good spot to try and throw his dagger again. Then it hit him. He didn't need to. Vordun was large enough to serve as a Point Warp target. Letting his weapons disappear, he sat down at the edge of the cliff to get a better look at he casually waved down at the two to show where he was. Focusing his magic, the afterimage appeared again as he warped forwards, digging down his feet to stop himself from moving too far as he hit the ground, placing a hand on Vordun's scales to steady himself. Point Warping twice in a short period was a doozy. He turned to Quistis.
"I can warp for distance, but also do so more quickly for dodging or taking a better position if need be. It takes up magic though, and while my body can regenerate it if I space out my magic use, I try not to use it too rapidly unless I absolutely have to."
Which was why he had taken his time with the two warps. Focusing on further distances took longer, plus he needed the time to let his magic pool sort itself out. That would allow it to be back to full strength by the time they reached their target. "I forgot to mention, but I also have some control over my movement in the air, which doesn't take up any magic. It's difficult to explain, but I can dart side to side, and keep my time in the air going for a little while."
Not that it wasn't taxing on his fatigue reserves, of course. But that was probably obvious. With that, he held out the flower to her. How he hadn't managed to crush it in his grip by accident while warping was beyond even him. "This is yours. For dragging you out here this early" he cheeked with a light smile. With everything all set, it seemed they were ready to rumble.
