Faris wasn't seeing things. The moment that he had drawn his blade, Caius had immediately begun to use the Warp Strike, over and over and over again. The support wyvern wasn't fast enough to intercept Caius, leaving the larger boss wyvern open to an undefended attack, and the befuddled support wyvern open for Faris to take advantage after realizing that it's original target had vanished. Caius slammed his blade into the head of the larger wyvern with everything he had, a series of growls and snarls not unlike the dragons they were fighting - and the one that had been on their side - erupting from him as he struck again and again, and again and again, and again and again, in an absolute fury, blipping about to the next point after every few strikes and keeping the bosses attacks from hitting him.
But with how much energy he'd already burned from loss of blood, Caius wasn't able to keep this up forever. Fatigue began to hit him as he stopped blipping, and the wyvern didn't hesitate. The wyrm quickly began to charge up, the fire glands in its mouth visibly beginning to heat up...
Before a fireball from down below rocketed upwards and struck it in the back.
The monster stopped charging, and Caius had the opportunity to use the last of his strength to send himself rocketing upwards, letting out one last desperate war cry as he brought his blade down on the wyvern's head.
Both wyrms let out their dying cries before they fell in defeat from the efforts of Caius and Faris. The moment that they fell, Caius' eyes widened as if the fireball he'd seen earlier registered. His sword disappearing, he raced to the edge of the tower.
"VORDUN!"
The small dragon was flapping his wings furiously, that fireball having spent a fair bit of his energy and making it hard to keep himself afloat, but the dragon refused to go down as Vordun kept flapping, trying desperately to get back up. Caius reached downwards, trying with everything he could to get a hold of Vordun. He couldn't reach with his left arm -- it just hung limp, meaning he couldn't reach with it nor could he use it for support. But Caius didn't care about the risks anymore. He'd risk death if it allowed even the smallest chance of saving Vordun.
"Come on Vordun, just a little more!" Caius called out to Vordun, and the small wyrm flapped ever the harder. Caius reached just a little further, managing to scoop up Vordun in his arm, but slipping in the process and letting out a cry as the both of them tumbled over and down the tower.
Caius didn't know where it came from, through some sort of second or third wind, or finding some sort of tiny reserve of energy, but Caius managed to summon his dagger and throw it, warping them backwards and back onto the tower. Caius didn't have the energy left to aim himself properly nor protect himself, so all he could do was cover Vordun with his own body as he hit the ground hard, holding onto Vordun for dear life as he rolled forward, cuts and bruises littering Caius' body as the rough landing only continued with his movement. As they came to a stop, Caius began to cough furiously, the pain finally catching up to him as he leaned away from Vordun and sputtered up blood. Managing to right himself and sit down, Caius pulled his arm back a bit to check on Vordun.
"Vordun...?"
The dragon's head perked up, and he let out a little cooing sound. Caius didn't know what emotions fell over him in that moment, but he wrapped his arm around Vordun again and held him close and tight. He was still scared, very scared, that this moment might be of his imagination. But it was real, he knew. Vordun was here, and the relief he felt was overwhelming.
Caius couldn't hold it in anymore, no matter how much he tried. Tears began to streak down his face as he buried his face in Vordun's head and began to sob. Sound weeping followed as Caius wasn't capable of stopping himself even if he might have wanted to save his pride in front of Faris. He was just... Happy. Scared. And so many other things. But it was okay now, Vordun was okay. He had thought he had lost him, and he couldn't contain what he was feeling right now, whatever level of feeling that might be. He didn't understand it, all he knew was he felt it.
But really, all that mattered was that Vordun was okay. That was all he cared about in that moment.

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
Faris landed hard.
His angle was right. His spear sharp. It cracked straight through skull and bone, severing the dragon's spine and sending it crashing to the stone. Faris gripped his own spear for balance, gritting his teeth as he weathered the beast’s last death throes. Finally, it settled and he was left panting, leaning on it like a staff. It was done. From the sounds of the other dragon, it was done, and they were left alive on the other side. Barely.
Faris didn’t have long to linger on it. Before he could so much as breathe, Caius was shouting and running towards the tower’s edge. Faris watched him hazily, about to call out a warning, before he saw it. The drake. It flapped desperately just barely out of reach of land. Faris’ eyes widened and he dashed forward, wincing when he stumbled on the dragon’s hide. Caius got there first. He reached out, crying desperately for the drake to make the last push, and Faris forced himself upright, running as fast as he could manage. But it was too late. He could only watch in horror as they both tumbled off the side.
”Caius!” Faris staggered forward with a new wind, eyes wide and heart racing. He prepared himself to jump. Would he make it back? How didn't know, but he didn’t think twice as he twirled his spear, gathered up the last of his power, and-
There was a flash of light and both man and dragon tumbled backwards onto the tower. Faris backpedaled wildly, shoving his toes into the stone to keep from throwing himself off instead. Then he turned to face them. Caius coughed blood into the back of his hand. The drake perked up in his arms and let out a happy chirp. Faris stared at them and then laughed. Hard.
It had all turned out alright. He wouldn’t watch the drake taken by the waves. This one, at least, they’d saved.
Caius clutched the drake tighter. His cheeks glistened with tears. Faris stumbled towards them, armor clinking with every unsteady step until he half-collapsed beside them. He felt his magic fade away as his knees hit the ground. Armor, spear, all of the fight in him -- scattered on the wind as though it had never been there at all. Faris smiled tiredly.
”Aye, it’s alright.” He put a hand on Caius' shoulder. ”She’s safe. Er, he. Your drake. He’s lucky to have a man like you.”
By the final words, his eyes were swimming. He swayed and then he found himself on his back, arms throbbing from his wounds and the fall that had jostled them. His breath was staggered -- his tunic stained with blood. More than that, his crystal felt ready to break. He laughed.
”Aren’t we a sad sight?” He watched a cloud pass over the sun and willed his vision not to darken. ”But we did it,” he said. ”Those devils won’t befoul another soul again.”
Caius was lost in his thoughts, lost in the relief and euphoria that he hadn't lost Vordun for what felt like forever. He only snapped out of it when he felt Faris' hand on his shoulder. He tensed up at first, at first mistaking it for a possible attack. But when he heard his voice, he calmed down and nodded his head. He managed to sit up, noting that Vordun had fallen asleep in his arms. He gingerly pressed an ear to Vordun's chest to check his breathing. Vordun wasn't breathing too ragged or sparse, just something that indicated that the dragonling was exhausted. He supposed that made sense. It had been an eventful battle, and Vordun had exerted himself more than he usually did. He wished he could at least try and heal Vordun, but there wasn't anything he could do right now. Stasis had taken his body, and he was having a hard time keeping upright, much less summoning his magic. So instead, all he could do was stare out and watch the landscape in front of him, gingerly nodding his head to the words of Faris.
"We did" He spoke softly. "All in a day's work."
Caius was completely spent. Physically, mentally, emotionally... He could curl up and take a nap here and now if they didn't still have a job to do. "I'm going to need a drink after this. Maybe a few strong drinks" He admitted offhand.
Eventually, he managed to get himself up, a little bit at a time. Letting out an exhale, he looked to Faris.
"I'm happy to have had you by our side on this day" He admitted gingerly. "You're a good man, Faris" He remarked. Why he resorted to piratry when they met, he didn't know. But he was sure he had his reasons. "Your help was invaluable and I'm grateful for that."
He let out a sigh though, as he remembered what needed to be done, when it came to the child from before.
"I... Was planning to carry the body back. But my left arm's useless, and I'm going to need everything from my right just to haul Vordun back. He's a deep sleeper, he'll probably be out for a good while" He admitted, adjusting in that moment to haul Vordun onto his shoulder, being as gentle as he could. The Power of Kings would repair his body over time, but Caius wouldn't be able to take any work until he managed to fix the damage to his arm. That was something he wasn't looking forward to. Though perhaps Yuna would be able to help...
"I'm sorry to put the burden on you, but I have to request your aid one last time in that matter. It wouldn't sit right with me if I couldn't at least give the family some measure of peace."
Caius hated asking Faris, when he was likely just as spent as he was. But Caius couldn't leave the body here, he refused to. If he absolutely had to, he'd wait until Vordun woke up and let Faris go on ahead while Caius took care of it himself.

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
”I’m going to need a drink after this. Maybe a few strong drinks.”
Faris laughed. ”Aye, I’d say we deserve a pint or twenty.” He watched the sky with a hazy eye. Had the clouds started trembling or was that just him? ”I’ll have to stop by next I’m in town. We’ll have a round. Not on me, but a round.” He glanced to Caius and smirked. He still didn’t like him -- not really -- but there was a certain bond you could only forge by risking your lives together. He was an honorable man, if a clueless one, and he deserved some credit for that.
And some respect. He’d earned that in spades.
”A good man?” Faris blinked and forced himself upright just to look at him. Faris squinted, sizing him up, before bursting with laughter. ”Are you daft?” He must have been. He looked as serious as anyone. ”Don’t forget how we met, lad. I’ve been a pirate since the first I could remember. I’m not about to quit it now.” Still, there was something charming about it. Caius might have been naive, but he had a good heart. That was for certain.
Then the topic took a turn for the worse.
Faris’ eyes darkened. He'd almost forgotten why they'd come. ”I’ll do it.” He didn’t know if he could. He didn’t know if his body could support it or if his arms would let him. He’d find a way.
Faris grit his teeth and forced himself to his feet. His head spun, but he had enough experience at keeping his balance that he didn’t let it show. If he could keep manage drunk on the deck of a ship then he could manage now.
”If you’ve got any potions, now’d be the time.” Faris didn’t himself. He could have kicked himself for it, but he didn’t have the money for much of anything at the moment. He’d snatch a few once the job was done.
He grabbed at his bleeding forearm, scowling at the blood that dampened his fingers. Potion or no, he'd do what had to be done -- he always had. It was his burden as a captain. Pirating wasn’t the safest way of life.
”We’ll get him home. He’s got people waiting for him.”
"I wasn't sure if I wanted to say anything, but... I was curious about that" He admitted after Faris' spurt of laughter and his remarks concerning what he'd said. "At first, after all this... I figured maybe you had your reasons. Doing what you can to survive and to put food on yours and maybe even a family's table, you know? I get that. I've been there. I've done things I'm not proud of. Things I'll probably never atone for in my eyes until I'm old and have fought so much that I can't fight anymore" He admitted as he managed to sit up at least.
"But what I don't understand is... I'm not sure if you need to, when it comes to pirating. There is no shortage of monsters that people are willing to have killed. You're perfectly capable of making a solid living off that, I've seen that full well today. Maybe you'll disagree with me, and that's fine, I really don't have the strength to argue..." He trailed off as he looked him in the eyes. "But the Faris, the man that I saw today... If you want my honest opinion, I think looting and pillaging is below him. And I think he could, and has the heart to, do a hell of a lot of good while still making that living."
He very slightly shrugged his shoulders as he shakily righted himself. "But what do I know? I'm not the best judge of character, I get that. If I'm wrong... Wouldn't be the first time I looked a self-serving scoundrel in the eye and thought I saw a good and well-intentioned man, I suppose. That's on me."
But a more important topic needed to take precedence. He bowed his head when Faris said he'd take the child. "Thank you" He spoke softly, before turning to Faris' advice about Potions. Some of them had been destroyed in the battle, but he would take one out and look to Vordun immediately. He was clearly considering whether to give it to Vordun over taking it himself, but he realized soon after that while Vordun was sleeping, he wouldn't be able to take it anyway. Letting out a sigh, he took the potion himself so that he would at least have the strength to get himself up and moving. He still felt like hell, and it did little to nothing for his arm. But it was enough. Once he was up, he took out the last one he had, and gingerly handed it to Faris as he started to make his way down. He'd heal Vordun himself when he had his magic back. He was still on shaky legs, and the pain made every movement unbearable. But he wasn't known for giving up all that easily.

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
Caius stopped Faris to ask about himself. What was he blathering on about? Faris raised an eyebrow, arms crossed as he waited for him to finish. He had to have his reasons? He didn’t need pirating? Looting was below him? It suddenly crossed Faris exactly what had rubbed him the wrong way about Caius to begin with. The lout trusted his own head over anyone else. Suddenly that naive heart of his wasn’t quite so charming.
”Looking a scoundrel in the eye?” Faris turned on him hard. ”I’ve told you you’re wrong. Don’t come calling me a lying cur because you think me something I’m not. I’ll look you in the eye and tell you you’d best mind your own business. You don’t know a thing about me, and you don’t know me better than I know myself.”
Faris didn't know why he was surprised. Caius had insisted Faris was better than he was even as he’d held a spear in one hand and a stolen lot of gil in the other. Faris wasn’t the worst of them -- he knew that -- but he wasn’t the best of them either. He didn’t know where Caius got off treating him otherwise. Caius had one thing right, at least. If Faris’ nature ended up catching him by surprise, he’d only have himself to blame. Faris had done everything he could to set him straight.
Faris watched as Caius pulled a potion out of his belt, swallowed it, then handed him one in turn. Faris took it without a hint of gratitude and had a long draft of it for himself. It burned like liquor in his throat, but he felt it faster than any ale. It heated his blood, strengthened his resolve, and he winced as his wounds stung and melded together. Not enough to fix them right, but enough that he could move himself well enough. Faris ran a hand through his hair and shook it out over his shoulders. He wanted this done with.
”We’ll finish this and go our own ways. You keep an eye on that drake of yours. I’ll shoulder the rest.” Faris started walking before he could hear a response. It was clear Caius didn't have a scrap of respect for his word. There was nothing else to say.
"I don't think you are either a scoundrel or dishonest. But I also know that I could be wrong, even if I hope I'm not. History of judging character has not been kind to me" He responded quickly, understanding that he had offended Faris and tried to clarify. Perhaps metaphor wasn't the way to go. But he knew that most likely, Faris wouldn't listen to a word he had to say now. It was a shame, he had honestly grown to respect and even like the man. But it really didn't take much to set him off either, he noted. He supposed this was what he got for not trusting his instincts. He had initially not wanted to speak his mind to Faris, in case something like this had happened. But when Faris had spoke up, his stupid heart had burst out and spoken instead of his logic. He had thought maybe... Maybe Faris was deep down everything that Caius had thought he was, and just...
"Personally, I think you underestimate yourself. I think you might be one of the more compassionate people I've met... Even if I don't understand everything you do. I want to hope I'm right in this anyway... Even if I seem to be constantly proven wrong."
He couldn't help it. He knew that speaking his mind further was only going to make it worse, but he couldn't stop himself. Even if he knew that he could be wrong on what he thought Faris was, he wanted to believe that Faris was a good man, perhaps just misguided. He wanted to believe that Faris was the respectable, compassionate and emphatic person that Caius had grown to find him to be. But he also knew that Faris had made the decision himself to loot and to pillage. Even if it had possibly been forced on him early in life... The decision was his now and today, not many would be strong enough to make him be one now if he didn't want to be.
And Caius had already been wrong so many times about the character of others, that he now had even begun to question his own judgement. He just... Didn't know.
Either way, it didn't look like Faris was going to listen to a word of it, and he wasn't surprised. Caius could admit he was upset about that outcome, but... What could he do?
Helpless to stop it. That was the constant in his life. And he hated it.
