If it was going to be the death of them, it apparently didn't stop Faris from not telling him that - despite his insisting that he would work around it if Faris corrected him - and doing it anyway. But Caius didn't seem to mind. The cave wasn't as narrow as the passage in the temple had been, and their opponents were far bigger than they were and much easier to hit with spells with less chance of an accident. When Caius heard that familiar crackling, he locked eyes with the pirate before spinning his blade in his hands and looking up to the ceiling. His experience with Celes had prepared him for what was coming, and Caius was able to plan accordingly. Pulling off the Point Warp, Caius zipped toward the ceiling just as Faris fired Thundara. The twin dragons were struck head on, the opening allowing for them both to take the blow. He watched the electricity crackle between them, both harming and stunning them.
"Nice shot!" Caius called down to Faris. "You fight a lot like my partner in that form!" He commented. Believe it or not, that was both an observation as well as praise. He didn't compare someone to Celes often when it came to battle. But they were both skilled with a blade and with magic in this state, and Caius was grateful for a style he was used to. Caius kicked his feet off the side of the ceiling dressing he was hanging off and descend downward.
"Vordun!" Caius called to the dragon, who took the hint and launched a large fireball toward the two wyverns who were beginning to regain their mobility. The moment he called for the attack, Caius began to charge up a Blizzard in his free hand, launching it at the point he calculated Vordun's fireball would strike. Having learned from his mistake back in the temple when it came to more narrow areas, Caius had decided to meet Vordun's fire with an ice spell to counteract the heat that would have radiated around the room if he hadn't.
"Blizzard!"
The attacks hit opposing sides of the wyverns, and Caius finished his descent soon after. Caius brought his blade down on the head of one of the wyverns, before summoning his daggers while the first blade was stuck in the head. Caius promptly leaped off the first wyvern and brought his daggers into the second, felling both with the finishing blows. If Caius' attacks didn't finish them, then the lingering crackling on the floor under them from Faris' Thundara certainly would. Allowing his sword to disappear as the creatures fell, Caius noticed the crackling under their bodies and quickly leaped off. A few lines of electricity shot up to meet him, but Caius quickly activated the air control and shot himself to the side in the air to dodge it. Tossing the dagger, he would Warp forwards to meet Faris and Vordun. Boots skidding across the ground as he landed and caught the dagger, he let out a loud exhale, wiping the sweat from his brow. But he could admit that while he was exerting a bit, the adrenaline coursing through his body at the time made it all worth it.
But there was still one more here. The last of the three had recovered from Caius' prior attack and had become enraged. The thing became slamming into the walls, causing the cave to rumble around them - before unleashing a stream of flames in their direction.

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
Faris’ blow landed. The dragons screeched, stunned, as Caius darted back through the air with a speed twice that of any dragoon. Faris squared himself to meet him as Caius called on his dragon for a stream of fire that he capped off with ice. It looked like they were both practiced with dodging magic.
”Then I’ll not hold back!” Faris readied another spell (Thundara) to stun them as Caius went in for the finishing blows. It did its jobs. Slowed and reeling, they had no defenses against the blade tossed their way, and Caius zipped between them like an irritable fly -- if a fly could wield a sword. With the two of them fallen, he darted back to the ground and straightened himself at their side.
”Not bad for a thick-headed lout like yourself.” Faris pulled his sword again and readied it against the last dragon at the end of the hall. It was always the last that had the most to lose, and it was always the last that dealt the killing blows. It looked like the magic or the stress had driven the beast mad, and it thrashed about as though it had a death wish of its own. The walls trembled with every blow, and Faris’ eyes widened as dust was loosed and cracks ran up the ceiling like spider webs.
Faris cursed loudly and threw himself back. ”Cover me! There won't be a thing I can do to fight it back!” He called on the crystal, willing it faster than it could manage, and light burst from him in a flash of red. His cape retreated. His scarf wrapped around his neck in a pointed collar. His tunic encompassed his body from wrist to neck to toe in a baggy suit of blue. By the time it was done, the walls had already teetered and the tunnel was coming down in chunks.
Faris tried his best to keep the heat from his cheeks. The garb of a geomancer was about the least respectable look a man could manage.
Still, Faris channelled the crystal through him and thrust out his hands, spinning around in a strange dance before raising his arms. The earth’s power extended from his palms and launched itself into the stone. He felt it quiver. He felt it lose balance, but he grit his teeth against the force of gravity and pushed it back. He kept his hands in the air, concentrating with everything he had as the dragon kept thrashing and renewing the tremors around them.
”Put an end to the devil before it takes us all down with it!” Faris could barely get the words out as he held the tunnel in place. He’d never studied geomancy, and his fire crystal wasn’t best suited for it. Still, its power struggled with him, and he put everything he had into its strange magic. ”Go!”

Suppose this world isn't so terra-ble.

They had to be quick, before the creature caused a cave-in that would most likely take them. While Caius and Vordun kept the creature busy, Faris had transformed once more. The outfit wasn't that much more gaudy than the others, so he didn't make any remarks. And honestly, he was having too much fun to care. Caius was in his element here, a high pressure, high intensity fight where he could go all out and just enjoy the feeling of his heart pounding in his chest and his hair blowing back in the wind as he moved. But whatever Faris ended up doing, it kept the tunnels up, at least temporarily. At his command, Caius and Vordun charged forward together.
"Low!" Caius called to Vordun, who went low and slammed itself into the creature's lower half, as Caius would go upstairs. While the creature was reeling, Caius slashed with his blade quickly and went for the neck, a clean cut that managed to pierce the scales and put it down. As the creature went down, Caius let out a sigh in relief as the tremors finally stopped. He couldn't help but laugh a bit, the adrenaline still pumping through his body and keeping his spirits high. But he hadn't forgotten why he was here either, or that he was hurrying, and he would motion with his head that they needed to get going. He would have time to ask Faris questions about this new form later. He wanted to get to the summit as soon as possible. The path soon gave way to light as they would find themselves on the outside half of the mountain. The summit wasn't too far, and after a few more lizards had been felled, the summit was almost in sight.
That was when Caius stepped on a rag that gave a crunching sound, and he stepped back, staring down at it. Brown pupils shrank as he realized quickly what he was looking at.
It was the garb the children from the village wore, still barely attached to a small body that when Caius looked closely, could tell it had been charred and chewed up and likely left for later. The body hadn't really rotted much, meaning it was a recent death. A day or so ago at most. And seeing as the village had only reported one child missing...
Caius put the dots together quickly and the realization that he had been too late hit him hard. Of course, the child had been gone before he had even set out, but... He couldn't help but blame himself, even if he had no right to. What if he'd been in the area sooner? What if he hadn't been slacking so much on the road and had traveled quicker? He could have saved them. Caius was... Peculiar, when it came to children. He clearly had a very soft spot for them, and that was more than evident here at the sight of the body. All of the upbeat spunk from the fight earlier was gone, as Caius had frozen cold at the realization. His hands began to shake, as he lowered his head. In his eyes, he had failed a child. A child was gone and he hadn't been able to do anything. This was familiar, wasn't it? How many children had to die before he stopped being helpless to stop it?
He knew deep down it wasn't his fault. But it was difficult not to hate himself for not somehow being in a position to stop it. Vordun seemed to sense Caius' despair as the dragon let out a whine and buried his head into Caius' leg. Caius meanwhile, seemed to just be in another world in those moments. Just blankly staring at the ragged body, tears streaming down his face. But eventually, he seemed to regain himself. Quickly wiping his eyes while keeping his back to Faris and Vordun, Caius gingerly moved the body to the wall.
"We'll come back to return the child to the village when we're finished here" Caius spoke roughly. He had closed off again, so to speak. His voice had returned to a much more cold and reserved tone, but there was something else to it. Something sharper, yet held back as much as possible.

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
There was a lot to say about Caius, but Faris couldn’t deny that he was good with a sword. He acted as soon as Faris gave the word, and he made short work of it. The dragon was easier to take while it flailed in a panic, and Caius knew well enough to take advantage of the opening while he had the chance. A good thing too. Faris didn’t think he could hold the cave a second longer.
Faris gave one final thrust against it before he dropped his arms, breathing hard. Reforming stone was no easy feat, but without the constant trembling, he managed well enough. Faris had acted more on instinct than thought, and he could feel the crystal drained within him. What right did he have to call on geomancy so suddenly? It had never coursed naturally through his blood, and he’d refused to dress that way if he could help it. And he could always help it when he’d had three others more with him who hadn’t known the meaning of indignity. Faris had managed through the strength of the crystal alone, and his crystal hadn’t liked it one bit.
Caius started forward without waiting for him. They had places to be, Faris cursed before running after him. He felt the crystal’s power slip from him as he went, melting in a trail of red light. By the time he caught up, he stood bare of magic or sword or spear. There was only him, panting and cursing something fierce. It was better to let his crystal rest while it could.
”That was a tough one,” he said once he could find the words again. ”I’ve not tried that power since the moment I found it, and I’m not keen to take it again. If you’d have been a second longer, that might have been the end of us.” Faris looked to him with something like respect. He wasn’t about to thank the man, but that was as close as he’d get. ”There’s like to be more ahead. That took the wind out of me so I’ll have you take point if you could-”
Caius stopped. Faris about stumbled into him, cursing again, before he managed to sidestep him and gave him a sharp look. But Caius wasn’t looking at him. No, his eyes were below, and there was something so hollow in them that Faris was wont to follow them. Yet follow he did, and the sight was every bit as grisly as he could have imagined.
Cloth. Bone. Rot. The pieces came before the whole. It clicked into place against his want or will. A corpse long forgotten. A child. ”Oh.” It was all he could say. The sight before him wasn’t fit for human eyes. Hearing it was one thing. Looking to find it was another. Now that it was here, it finally felt real.
Faris something flare within him. Whatever had done this would pay in blood.
”The devils won’t breathe a second longer!” He heard his voice rise. ”Those damned, yellow sons of-!” He felt a growl beneath his teeth and then he was charging forward. It didn't matter that he'd lost his power. It didn't matter that Caius might not have followed because there was a fire in his heart and his head was clouded with the flames. A child. They'd killed a child. Something not even the lowliest of pirates would do, and something he'd draw blood for if they had.
It didn't matter that his own blood could spill when that sight still burned in his heart.
He heard the wing flaps. He heard the lumbering thing before him, and still, he charged ahead to face it. Fear couldn't find a place inside him, and he wouldn't have known it if it had. He rounded the last bend until he stood before it, the towering beast and the head of the hive. Its eyes burned with fiendish fire. Its scaled glinted black beneath the glare of the sun. It loomed at five times Faris' height, but Faris squared himself against it with a challenge in his eye.
"I'll take you on, crystal or not!" He drew the dagger from his belt and thrust it out before him. "You swellheaded lizard!"
Perhaps Caius might have appreciated Faris' words if he were listening. But he hadn't heard a word of it. The mercenary had drifted into his own world from the moment he saw the child. But he did feel Faris' movements and that was enough for Caius to get moving. Or perhaps he wouldn't have waited? Perhaps Faris just decided to move at the same time that Caius finally willed himself forward, not a word escaping him.
It was only further up a set of steps before they reached the summit, and greeting them was a very large monster, not a dragon of the kind Caius had fought to get Vordun's egg but definitely a much larger variant of the species they had been fighting. Standing close to three times the size of it's counterparts, the roar it let out at the sight of them seemed to be almost like a command for the several other wyverns to attack.
Caius didn't wait for Faris or Vordun to move forward with him, even as he heard Faris draw his sword. Caius' blade appeared in his hand immediately as he began to march forward with purpose. But his eyes told the story.
In those eyes... His despair had been quickly replaced with pure, unbridled fury and rage. His teeth gritted, with a low seethe emitting from his tongue as he seemed laser focused on only the target of his ire. Vordun appeared to be able to sense his master's rage, as the dragon, while they didn't understand what had happened, seemed to at least be able to know Caius' emotions and the dragon's own matched them perfectly. The smaller dragon let out a loud, booming, resounding and bloodthirsty roar that seemed very out of character for the generally quite friendly lizard. Caius charged straight for the larger of the wyverns, slashing square at its head immediately in what then became a series of slashes, the last one being delivered with a pained, furious roar.
The adrenaline and blood were pumping to the point Caius hadn't noticed that one of the other wyverns had slammed their claws into his shoulder until the moment it hit, knocking him down as he felt the claws slash through the back of his jacket. Caius quickly stabbed upwards, before materializing one of his daggers and tossing it backwards to Warp and clear some distance.

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
It occurred to him in some distant, muted way that perhaps this was not his best idea. ’You’ve lost your power,’ it said. ’Do you really want to take on a dragon without it?’ But whatever reservations he had flickered and died in the face of the fire in his heart. It didn’t matter if he could handle the threat or not. It didn’t matter if the dragons struck him down where he stood because the image of that mangled child still burned hot in his chest, and he’d be damned before he forgot it.
He readied his sword.
Faris didn’t notice Caius falling into place behind him, but the dragons sure did. Caius zipped forward like some kind of insect all aglow in magic light, flitting between them with a sword in his hand while his drake charged forward with fire on his tongue. Between the two of them, the dragons nearly forgot about Faris altogether. His cheeks burned with passion.
Faris had already started forward when he noticed one of the dragons turn its eyes towards Caius' drake. It was about fifteen feet taller and about ten times fiercer, and as Faris saw it lunging towards the drake, he thrust himself instinctively forward. His sword caught sharpened fangs -- if only barely. Faris winced as they sliced into his arm, but he kept his sword steady, shouting curses both at his pain and the lizard itself. The dragon reared back, but the opening was already made clear. The man's drake quickly shook off her fear and shot out another round of fire. It struck the dragon’s snout and it bellowed in rage. Faris glanced towards the drake and nodded.
”Aye, now that’ll send them running.”
The dragon did, in fact, stagger back though not for long. While Caius kept the others busy, Faris stayed by the drake’s side, dodging back and forth to compliment her fiery breath. With Faris weakened and the drake too small to take the dragons head on, they protected each other with fire and sword working as one. Faris wasn’t about to let a good-hearted drake come to harm.
Then Caius fell out of the sky.
”Have you got your head on straight?” Faris angled his blade for a better grip. ”It’ll take more than that to bring you down!” Or so he thought. Faris didn’t get a good look at Caius when he was too busy blocking an incoming dragon’s claw. It shifted his blade to one side and pierced his other shoulder. Without his armor, it tore straight through, and Faris let out another string of curses as pain flooded him only slightly muted by adrenaline.
Why wouldn’t the crystal come? He tried to will it forward with sheer rage, but felt only a dim glow of what he needed. His geomancy had struck it straight through. That’s what he got for pushing such an unpracticed class.
Still, even as he felt the claw drag down the flesh of his arm, he didn’t call for help. He only cried for the dragon’s blood, and he refused to back down. He’d hold his ground -- crystal or not -- because a crystal didn’t make a man. If that was all keeping him on his feet then he didn’t deserve a single shard of it.
It wouldn’t have mattered to Caius if he had his powers or not in this instance, he wouldn’t have backed down either, so that was one thing they had in common. Caius was not leaving this mountain until these things were dead, it was as simple as that.
The moment he landed, he charged forward again to start the conflict anew. The black scaled wyverns would chomp at him en masse, but the mercenary tossed his sword overhead just as he leaped upwards - boldly reeling his foot back and landing an upwards kick on the jaw of one of the beasts. He doubted it would do much damage but it would likely stun it. And while it hurt, scales and all, it felt damn good too. Using the Warp, Caius disappeared and re-appeared next to his blade as the monster chomped at him, and the monster would then be struck unawares when Caius snapped his fingers and Vordun sent a large ball of flames slamming into the face of his fellow dragonkind.
Caius didn’t hesitate.
Bringing his blade into both hands, he lifted it overhead in an attempt to bring it down on the creature’s head.
But a loud crunch was followed by a bloodcurdling scream from Caius.
The largest of them had managed to get some distance from Faris and had chomped down on Caius left arm, close to the shoulder. The pain was insurmountable, and Caius’ head darted toward the beast as he felt heat rising near his arm. His sword disappeared as he realized what was going on, and the mercenary acted on instinct.
Caius brought his right hand down and held it toward the monster’s mouth just as the flaming glands in the monster’s jaws reached the point of delivering a firey breath. He had grabbed something from his pocket - the only explosive he had left on him from back home. He had been saving this for an emergency and this seemed like as good a time as any.
Tossing it into the monster’s mouth, Caius called his dagger and letting it drop, the Warp letting him escape just as the wyvern tried to breathe fire.
The explosion caused the creature to let out a shriek and enraged, tried to breathe fire again. But the flames didn’t come. Caius had managed to damage the glands. Probably not permanently, they would recover with time. But for the time being he had disabled them. But Caius had no reason as agonizing pain shot through him when he tried to move his arm. There was a good chance it was broken and if not for the armored plates on his jacket that the creature had destroyed, odds were he would have lost the arm entirely. In a sick sort of way, Caius had lucked out on that one. But he was still down to one arm.
Caius tried to rise to his feet, but the pain was unbearable and was a shock to his system that caused him to stumble, clutching his arm. While the big one couldn't breathe fire anymore, the other one could, and Caius watched it open its mouth as it unleashed a large jet of flames...

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
Caius did, in fact, have his head on straight.
In fact, it seemed the blow had hardly done a thing. Caius was back on his feet in a breath, sword raised and ready for a fight. He disappeared in a flash of light and danced above the dragons’ heads with his blade slashing about with a raging fervor. There was a click and then the man’s drake went charging forward, fire at its snout. She spewed the flames directly into the dragon’s eyes, and it staggered, reeling with animal shriek. Faris hardly had time to appreciate her before another dragon was on him, and he barely blocked its claw with the broad side of his blade.
Caius screamed.
”Hey!” Faris looked over to see the dragon’s fangs clamped around his shoulder. Faris eyes widened before a fire lit them and Faris staggered forward, stopping only as his own dragon lunged and he held his blade against it. Caius was in trouble. In more than trouble from the looks of it, and Faris grit his teeth, trying his best to backstep towards him as his own dragon kept him on edge. Caius struggled and pulled at his wound, but made no ground as embers lit the dragon’s maw. Faris felt a cold chill of horror. If he could just slip his blade away for a second, he could dodge over and-!
Boom! A different fire rushed the dragon’s mouth and it reeled, giving Caius enough time to throw himself back in another flash of light. He stumbled, breathing hard and shocked with pain. His arm was useless. Still, the other dragon rounded on him, maw aglow. Faris felt his breath catch. There wasn’t time.
”Caius!” Faris threw himself back, wincing as dragon’s claw ripped through his forearm and he dashed forward. His mouth was dry -- his heart pounding. He didn’t think as he threw himself towards Caius, acting on instinct alone. Something flickered hot in his blood. It surged with his panic, his fear, and his rage as he felt a light engulf him and then he was rocketing through the air. The wind struck his face in daggers. His spear fell heavy in his hand. He twisted it around and then thrust himself down.
His spear struck hard at the back of the dragon’s neck. It pierced through scales and flesh and then the dragon was bucking and screeching as Faris grasped desperately at his spear to keep balance. He tried to pull it out, but his arm had taken too much damage and he couldn’t get a proper grip.
He yanked once, twice, three times before it finally freed itself with a sickening squelch and Faris took to the air again, landing panting at Caius’ side. He spun his spear around with difficulty and thrust it between himself and Caius. ”Get back and lick your wounds! I’ll keep it on its toes!”
Caius' eyes widened when Faris threw himself in front of him. Caius growled in annoyance -- not at Faris, but at himself for being so helpless that someone had to put themselves at risk for his sake. He was grateful, of course he was. But Faris had endangered himself for Caius' carelessness. But Faris seemed alright, had even seemed to regain use of their changing magic as a spear appeared in their hand and he was able to deal damage to the wyvern. Faris instructed Caius to get back and heal his wounds, and Caius managed to slowly get himself to his feet, letting out a begrudged nod. He wanted to say "Thank you" but the pain made it difficult to speak as he slowly made his way back.
But Vordun was another story.
The dragon had witnessed this and while it was likely grateful for the cover from Faris, Vordun had squared his crosshairs completely on a topic of its ire. Vordun made a flying beeline for the largest wyvern that had hurt Caius so, loosing a large jet of flames that engulfed it in turn. While the creature tanked the damage, Vordun’s assault didn’t stop there.
“VORDUN!” Caius cried out to the small dragon who had at this point stopped obeying orders out of pure rage. Aiming its claws at the large one, Vordun would be stopped by the enraged wyvern that they had left alive before. But Vordun attacked anyway, slashing across its face with his claws. The wyvern attacked back, but the smaller Vordun was also faster with his size and managed to duck down, before managing to blind his opponent with his claws and attacking with his fire breath once more, this time managing to take the monster down.
Wyverns remaining: 1 Boss, 1 Support
But Vordun wouldn’t be able to defend himself when the large one attacked from within the smoke, its claws swatting Vordun and sending him flying, tumbling off the cliff and disappearing below.
“NO!”
Caius cried out desperately after Vordun, willing himself to his feet. In his mind, he had likely just lost the closest thing he had to his own child.
Something in him stirred. He didn’t care if he died here anymore, so long as he killed these things. No pain mattered anymore. No useless arm mattered anymore. No concern for his own well-being mattered in that moment. Caius picked up both his daggers -- a rush of adrenaline holding up the one in his left hand up just long enough -- and pointed them at whichever of the wyverns was in front of him. If it wasn’t busy with Faris, it was going to pay.
Clicking the triggers on both blades, he opened fire, fully intent on emptying every bit of ammunition. Much of it bounced off but Caius didn't care.
For the first time for as long as he could remember, Caius felt something new: Fear.
He was scared.
No, scratch that. He was absolutely terrified.
He needed to know Vordun was alive. He needed to go down there and find him. But with that fear came neverending rage. That thing had taken that child from parents who would never see them again. And now they may have taken his.
They would pay. And they would pay in blood. Even as his arm gave out again and forced his dagger to disappear, Caius let out a snarl as he allowed the other to disappear, materializing his main gunblade in his uninjured hand. Drool foamed at his mouth as he seethed in pure rage and agony, the pain being ignored as all possible as all he could think about was killing them.
"I've still got one arm..." He growled low. Nothing would stop him.

You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
Caius’ drake rushed past them. Faris’ eyes widened. He shared in Caius’ shout of warning, reaching out to grab him but missing as his arm flinched in pain. She thrust herself into danger, flapping her wings and clawing, burning, scratching until the nearest dragon went crashing down. Faris stared at her before he broke out in a grin. ”Aye, that’s it!” he cried, readying his spear for his next jump.
Then the last dragon sent her flying.
”No!” His voice joined a chorus with Caius’ as Faris launched himself into the air after the drake. He was too late. By the time that Faris had rocketed past, the drake was already beyond his grasp. Faris backpedaled in the air, barely managing to divert his momentum back onto the tower’s edge as he stared down in horror. A drake that young wasn’t steady enough on her wings to take to the skies. Maybe she could glide down if she got her bearings. Maybe…
Shots fired behind him like cannon fire. Caius was in a rage, cheeks flushed, eyes red. He blasted his hand cannons again and again with a crazed fervor before he brought his blade to his hand again and faced off against the thing -- wounds be damned. Faris felt a growl form in his throat.
”That devil!” It had struck down a brilliant wind drake. He could still hear her cry as the blow landed, as she tumbled off the edge, as she fell and fell and-
The sea claimed her thrashing into the waves. Heat erupted into Faris’ throat. He would end the beast himself.
His finger clenched around his spear as he dashed forward, jumping before he reached it and crashing down again. It pierced between the fiend’s ribs and it screeched its pain. Between the spear and the gunshots and whatever Caius chose to do with his blade, the thing recoiled back, thrashing and clawing wildly. Faris thought he caught Caius’ light zipping around him, but he kept his eyes forward. The beast was outnumbered, and the two were in a frenzy for blood.
Faris yanked twice on his spear before he loosed it again. The dragon bucked so hard that Faris nearly toppled over, teeth grit and stance squared. His arm shot with pain that only now pulsed in his shoulders, but he just launched himself up again. He wouldn’t be defeated. Not now. Not when they were so close.
From so high, he could see the dragon, Caius’ specks of light, and the ground so far below that it was dizzying. Still, he angled himself out of a straight drop. Its head. He thrust himself down. There was nothing left but to fall.
