The reputation of the Dragonblades had increased tremendously as the months went by. A mercenary guild formed by Caius Dragelion and Celes Chere, they were most well known for two things. Their fearlessness, as the duo and those that would come to fight alongside them would take on even the most fierce and dangerous of monsters without fear. Their track record was steadily growing the more jobs they took on, the bigger the monsters they defeated, and the more people that joined their ranks. But more than that, they were most well known for their honor and reliability. Zephon was a hub of consumer requests, and the Dragonblades were always happy to serve them for a fair price that corresponded with the type of job. The Dragonblades rarely if ever left a job unfinished. But Zephon had it's shady side, yet it was not something the Dragonblades were ever willing to have anything to do with it. Anyone that had dealt with them knew that their creed made it clear they were not assassins. They were monster hunters, escorts, willing to handle bandits and other rogues that had stolen something or kidnapped someone or other. But they were not thieves, they were not assassins, they refused to stoop to the level of the very kinds of people and monsters that they regularly fought against. For the people, and for the guild... That was their motto. One they took very seriously.
Brave folks from all over Zephon had applied, searching for glory, or for riches... Or even just a place to belong. Not everyone was fit for it, of course. Despite the freedoms its members were afforded in choosing jobs that came their way or simply taking them by personal request, being able to choose what jobs they did and when they were available to take them... It was a lot of pressure to represent a guild, and uphold its laws. But those who did stay found a family for life. And that had turned out to be something quite important to many who had found themselves displaced in this world from their own.
For Caius... It was a creed, a motto, a group, a family even... That Caius had found his belonging. On a job that took him past the Pale Coast, Caius was riding solo this time around. Well, not entirely. His company came in the form of a winged lizard, the size of a large dog, who toddled by his side. Taking in the coastal air, Caius couldn't help but lament how the coast should feel much more lively. But he could sense nothing, not undersea life, not beachside life... Nothing. Conditions had driven them all out, and while that feeling of the seaside wind and air in his face was there... In some ways, it just wasn't.
But his attention would be caught when he thought he glimpsed a figure in the distance... Piquing his curiosity. Lament the lack of life... And one has to wonder if it's real when they actually see it.
The sea breeze whistled in her ear, caressing the brown locks around her face as her emerald eyes gazed into the distance. Shortly after waking up in this strange world, Aerith began weighing her options. She was not a fighter, more so a healer if nothing else. She knew she could still call upon her abilities in this world but her stored materia seemed to glow faint, obliging her to leave them be lest they truly lose their power. Sitting upon the shore, she sighed, wondering where she should start. Naught a soul could be found in these shores and she knew she had to move if she were to survive. There's no Cloud nor Zack this time, no friends or pets, she was truly alone and the thought terrified her.
Standing up, she brushed the sand on her skirt and thumbed the handle of her rod, surprisingly intact after the manner of journey that brought her here. Even that memory was hazy, albeit some snippets she could recall here and there. Trying to remember more gave her a headache so she stopped doing that a long time ago.
Her stomach was grumbling, she knew she had to move even just to eat. She could try to fish but the Cetra girl would not put her chances up to fate, not knowing if the fish in this ocean were safe to eat or not. Before she could muse any further, she heard a few footfalls in the distance, turning her head towards the sound and trying to make out the figure slowly coming towards her.
She realized there were two, her hands tightening on the shaft of her rod as she tried to decide if they were friendly or dangerous. Despite herself, she started to walk towards them, leaving the sound of crashing waves to the hopes of finding another soul in this barren earth.
"Hello?" She called out, taking one step at a time lest she need to flee if they proved to be dangerous. As she went nearer, she saw that one of them was a man, looking travel-worn but experienced besides. Next to him was a creature, frighteningly large but then again, it was walking peacefully with him. Aerith relaxed for a little, trying to muster a small smile while she started to lower her rod. If they wanted to kill her, she would have been dead by now, and so she decided to trust her instincts.
A sole woman came into view, and Caius quirked a brow at them as they would call out to himself and Vordun. It could be a person, but it could also be a siren. He'd heard of the monsters before, and had already had encounters with monsters trying to pass off as beautiful women to lure in and kill would-be adventurers. The haunted mansion lay still in the forefront of his mind, so he kept wary as he would continue to move forward. Sensing the tension radiating from his master, Vordun would keep crouched a bit as he moved alongside him. He didn't growl, not yet, as he didn't sense any sort of intent from the figure. But Vordun was tense just as his master was, it was part of their bond.
Finally, he would come within a few feet of the woman, and he would study her face a moment without getting too close at first. She didn't look the same as the monster from before, but it was possible they could simply change their shape as they wished. After a few moments, he would take a deep breath before greeting her.
"Are you lost?" He would inquire, then. It was worth at least trying to make conversation, just in case. He would be able to gauge their intentions as he went. "The Pale Coast isn't exactly the best place for sightseeing, after all. Place is as dead as a doornail."
He didn't recognize her garb. It was possible she was from one of the cities he hadn't been to yet, he noted... But it was also possible she was an offworlder, just as many of them were. If so, then it was unlikely she was a monster. Caius kept guarded either way though. One could never be too careful.
A friendly face, she surmised, relaxing a bit as she darted her eyes from him to his strange companion. The man asked if she was lost, but weren't they all? Or maybe, she was the only one spirited away into this world after all.
"Sort of." She shrugged, now knowing the name of this place. He called it the Pale Coast, a fitting term, if Aerith could say so herself, what with the shores devoid of life and making her feel ominous. She had to inwardly laugh at her predicament, though, another man seemingly rescuing her from her plight. This would make it the third time, "I woke up here, I don't really remember how I got here but I've been trying to find a way out for hours now." Everywhere she looked was just a vast scenery of sand and she dare not go further lest she met any dangerous foe. She may know how to fight but the girl was not made for fighting, she'd rather heal anyone than actually inflict damage, "I'm Aerith, by the way." She gave the man a tentative smile, wondering if he would be kind enough to guide her out of this wasteland.
The sea was beginning to lose its novelty.
"Can you maybe take me with you away from here? Just till we find a town? I absolutely don't know where I am and I'm just happy to see another person alive." And even talking her language, to say the least. Maybe he was spirited away from Midgar too, or some other part of her world. She contemplated telling him about her powers, got to be careful who you tell about yourself after all. His intentions still were not clear and she'd rather not have someone who would take interest in her abilities. It's hard to forget what power could do to the mein of men.
"I won't be a burden, I promise, just to the next town."
The woman seemed friendly enough. But her explanation and request made it likely to him that she was someone who had been freshly plucked from another world and brought here. What an odd place to be brought though... Then again, Caius had been dropped in the middle of nowhere as well. He wondered if it was always just random, or... Well, no matter. It couldn't hurt to escort her to the nearest town, it wasn't all that far by his standards.
When she introduced herself, he would bring a fist to his heart in the traditional Kingsglaive salute, with a half-bow of his head. "Caius" He responded curtly. "My companion is Vordun. He doesn't bite. He's more puppy dog than dragon, I promise" He commented in dry humor. With that, he nodded his head as to accept her request.
"Of course" He spoke calmly as he would motion that they were heading off. "I was just finishing a job. I was on my way to a village to report the eradication of a monster that had been causing trouble on the outskirts and disrupting trade routes. It's on the way, so I hope you can bear with me if we take a stop on the way back to town" Caius would explain as he and Vordun would get on their way.
"I assume you're from another world, then" Caius spoke up once the ragtag party had gotten moving. "What's it like? What did you do there?" He asked, curiously. It wasn't often that he met someone just freshly transported, and he found that it was easier to adjust just by having someone to talk to. That's what he had found with the Dragonblades members who were still new to this world, anyway. Someone to talk to always seemed to help put them at ease... Though Aerith seemed to be holding it together alright. But he also just enjoyed hearing stories.
He did an odd salute as he introduced himself, which made her smile, remembering the way some of her friends acted. It struck her how she missed home, and the people she made memories with. Although she left them in a somber note, she hoped to see at least one in this world and then maybe, they could start again.
"Hello Vordun!." She cheerily said, crouching to get a better view of the creature. It was a bit strange, she surmised, but there had been stranger things like talking animals back in her homeworld. Aerith listened as he regaled his tale of a job and a possible errand, smiling wider still as he agreed to take her with him, "I don't really mind, I'd love to help if I could." She closed her eyes, wondering if her abilities are still intact. Answered by the spirit that churned in her veins, she stood up, a bit more confident that she won't be a burden to this kind man.
He spoke of her possibly being from another world, following him once he started walking. She nodded at the question, wondering how she would describe her world to him, "Well, a lot has happened in my world. I assume you came from another world with blessings from the lifestream as well? We were battling a dangerous man when I..." She paused, thinking about how she would phrase her next statement. It would be weird if she told him that she died, she would not be able to explain how she's here alive and well either. Throwing caution to the wind, she decided that there really was no other way to describe it, and so she told him the truth, "When I died at his hands. After that, I don't remember much but I seem to have been whisked away here, alive." The sea breeze ruffled her hair as they walked away from the ocean, the sand turning into rocky plains as they went along, "I just hope that some of my friends are here. It's not nice to be alone."
"What about you? How did you come about doing errands for the people here? Have you been here long?' Her curious nature got the better of her this time, her initial questions nothing more but a prelude to the things she would like to ask about this world.
Vordun let out a cheerful chirping sort of growl that indicated he was pleased with the greeting. Caius' words that he was the equivalent to a puppy dog in dragon form were indeed true, and Vordun was one of the friendliest lizards one was going to find. Either way, it seemed that the duo would be traveling together for a little while. She didn't seem to mind the detour, which was nice. He didn't want to deal with the potential complaining if she hadn't, but he had to go and report that job as done. That was part of the job. And how he got paid. It was how he got to eat tonight, and how his comrades got to eat tonight too.
She even said she'd love to help. Not that he needed help in just reporting a job as done, but he appreciated the sentiment all the same, which got a small smile out of him. He'd been smiling more often, he realized then... And he had to wonder why. It hadn't been a constant in his life, pretty much... Ever. Things had been changing since Celes came along. Perhaps changing a bit too fast for even Caius to keep up with. Not that he minded this sort of change...
He would nod his head when she would ask if he came from another world, though he had no idea what the hell the "lifestream" was. He would ask her later, he decided. When she was finished. But the revelation that she had -died- was suddenly far more pressing. "You... Died?" Caius would parrot, quirking a brow. "Well the King that I was stopping an assassination attempt on when I was brought here is now here, alive and well, years later like he hadn't aged a day. So I guess a dead person being brought here and alive isn't all that far fetched" He admitted, with a casual shrug. "I'm only alive because I stabbed someone in the eye once, so I'm no stranger to strange things I guess."
That last part was meant to be a joke. He tried to make it sound like a joke. But his humor was so dry that maybe it wouldn't come off like a joke... He was still working on that.
He nodded his head again when she brought up her hope she would find her friends here. He tried to keep from hanging his head. Aside from the King that didn't even know his name or even recognize him... Caius didn't have anyone to hope to meet here. Perhaps that was for the best. What if he had and they never came? It hurt less that way... Gave him more to look forward to in the future instead of looking back on the past. Even if it made it clear to him just how miserable his existence once was.
"Me?" He asked, scratching his head when she would ask about him. "I'm the leader of a mercenary guild. The Dragonblades. I've been here a few years now, and just kinda realized that I can mope about the life in the old world I lost... Or make a new one. So I chose the latter. My... Partner, helped me realize that."
Deciding to act on his ponderings from before, he would voice them. "Question. What is the Lifestream?"
