Outside Of Torensten
A settlement had spent the last few weeks being sacked and tormented by these creatures they called Tonberries. They seemed to be coming from a cave nearby, and were almost completely unrelenting in their assaults. Every single day yielded another day of death and torture, another day of more civilian corpses being found covered in stab wounds by the end of the day. A notice had been put out that these things needed to be eradicated, and Caius had taken the job. Alone, as he always did. Of course, he knew that the notice was open, and had learned by now to expect anything, friend or foe...
Caius had never seen a tonberry before, and as he would walk toward the entrance to the cave, adjusting the large egg attached to his back so as to ensure that it wouldn't be damaged. He didn't know what to expect from these tonberries. In his world, they were either incredibly rare, or they didn't exist at all (It was the former!)
Letting out an exhale, brown eyes scanned the landscape as he didn't even leave out the possibility that he could be ambushed out here. It was there that he saw a small creature, bi-pedal but almost turtle-like in appearance. Caius would blink a few times as he stared down at it, and would lean down a bit to get a better look at it... What in the world was this green creature? What was this small, green thing doing so close to the caves? This couldn't be a tonberry, could it? It didn't seem all that dangerous, but he also knew that appearances could be deceiving. But this thing? No way.
Caius looked about a bit more, still apprehensive as to his surroundings... But he was ready to delve in, and delve in soon. Better to get the jump on these ambush specialists before they ambushed him.
The soft sound of boots thudding tiredly against the ground resounded across the lonely abandoned village as Rinoa exhaled harshly, ignoring the way her muscles screamed at her for rest. She had been travelling for two days since waking from the nightmarish void she had been trapped inside, no knowledge of where she was or what had happened to her friends.
Were they still lost in the emptiness? Did any of them make it out alive?
All Rinoa was certain of was that she was in foreign lands, alone and, admittedly, afraid.
Rinoa was drawn to the remains of the village in the hopes that she would find someone - anyone, alive. Unfortunately and frustratingly for her, the only signs of life she had found were from a long time ago...no townsfolk, no soldiers...nothing but the sound of prowling beasts that she had kept a safe distance from.
The lack of fuel had taken its toll on the young woman but her stubbornness forced her onward; she clambered over some rocky debris, huffing out a deep breath, willing her legs to lift and climb until she was on the other side of the village remains.
It was there, for the first time since waking, she spotted a figure in the distance. Finally...a person!
“Oh, thank god!” Rinoa gasped to herself in relief.
“Hey! Hey you!” She began to shout in their direction, exhaustion, hunger and desperation taking over the part of her mind that told her caution may have been a wiser decision. Waving like a lunatic, Rinoa felt a surge of energy from the hope that filled her heart. She broke into a run, approaching the figure to discover it was, in fact, a man.
Disappoint stung at her for the briefest of moments when she realised it wasn’t him...but it was someone at the very least. Resting her hands on her thighs, panting for air, Rinoa tried to address the stranger.
“Hey...I was...trying to...get your...attention!” She breathed out between heavy exhales, standing upright once the burning sensation in her lungs subsided a bit. Before Rinoa had chance to introduce herself, her attention was drawn towards a small, cloaked green creature wandering nearby.
A nervous squeak slipped from Rinoa’s mouth the second she recognised what the little green guy actually was; she reached to carefully grab the stranger's arm and slowly tug him away, stepping backwards, careful not to make any sudden movement or noise.
“I wouldn’t stand too close to that if I were you.” She whispered, wide brown eyes glued to the monster.
The gunblade touting mercenary was busy trying to figure out a good route into the cave while also preparing himself for ambush. While ironically paying little heed to the ambusher itself. Caius though would stop when the former glaive who definitely, totally wasn’t almost a former SEED in early writers development, would hear a voice calling out to him. “Hmm?” He sounded as he turned toward the sound, keeping wary of everything around him except for the bipedal turtle. What if this woman was a distraction and the tonberry was actually the name of ninjas that ambushed you when you were distracted by far out calls?
Someone definitely should have drawn Caius a picture. He’d probably ask for one next time.
The woman that would show up looked the right mess. Red lips were dry and worn, her face looked deathly pale, likely from exhaustion and lack of proper nutrition. Her breath was in quicker spans but seemed to be waning as though she had very little energy and was likely running on a thin thread for some time now.
“Good morning, Miss. Can I help you-“ Caius asked, but would be quickly interrupted when she would pull him back. Not hard, very subtly and gently. Which was about the only reason he didn’t mistake it for an attack and make the sudden movement that she was specifically trying to avoid.
The whisper though, got him to blink a few times and look toward where she was looking. There was the cute little turtle thing. Holding a rusty looking knife.
“... Is that a knife?” Caius asked, as the realization slowly dawned on him. “Did that kappa just try to shank me?”
Hanging back behind the well-armed man, Rinoa shook her head, locks of dark hair bobbing from side to side as she did. Remembering to let go of the stranger’s arm, Rinoa’s attention was momentarily drawn to his weapon. Although different in its design, there was no mistaking the type of sword she was staring at...it was a gunblade.
Eyes widening with surprise, Rinoa felt a rush of excitement surge through her heart from the possibility that wherever she had ended up wasn’t so different from her home after all. Maybe this was just how the new world looked after whatever happened in the void? She still had so many questions but with the imminent threat so nearby and her dwindling supply of energy, Rinoa could barely get her words out.
“That's no kappa, it's a tonberry. They may look cute but they’re really dangerous!” She explained a little nervously, taking another, hurried step backwards, stumbling over some loose, small rocks on the ground.
“It looks kind of mad, doesn’t it?” Rinoa whispered apprehensively behind her hand to the man, watching as the tonberry began to very slowly walk towards them, the lantern clutched tightly in its other tiny hand swaying from the momentum.
“Let’s go, we probably shouldn't try to fight it yet, it could call more of them.” She insisted, resisting the urge to take the man’s arm and pull him again - she had to remember people had boundaries, especially strangers. It was something her friends’ had to get used to, how touchy-feely she could be sometimes.
“We can outrun it, they’re only fast when they’re really angry.” Turning on her heel, Rinoa began to put some distance between herself and the tonberry.
"Oh! I almost forgot. I'm Rinoa, by the way." She called back over her shoulder to the man, flashing him a sheepish grin.
Caius stared at the angry little kappa creature with the hood and the lantern and the sheev with a perplexed expression. This thing was what he had been hired to kill? This thing had been torturing and murdering villagers? This was the sadistic, merciless creature that had a high bounty, it and it's friends? Caius blinked a few times more, wondering if the girl was perhaps joking. But one really couldn't deny the fact that it had just tried to shank him.
The girl would suggest that they run before it called it's friends. Which conveniently was exactly what Caius wanted. As Rinoa would begin to move away, Caius would stay put as the mercenary would watch it begin to take slow, angry steps toward him.
"Shame. Sort of wanted to keep one as a pet" Caius would remark as he would load the chamber on the gunblade, feeling a bit of his energy dip into it as the energy bullet was loaded and ready to go. Caius would watch the creature a little bit longer before deciding that it was indeed dangerous and he would have to engage with the mission.
"Caius" He introduced in response to her own introduction. "I'm a mercenary. And unfortunately, my job today is to take care of some monsters called tonberries that are torturing and slaughtering village folk..." He'd trail off as he looked toward Rinoa.
"I'd run."
With that, Caius would aim the blade's tip toward the tonberry and open fire without hesitation, his eyes, his expression - all grew cold as he fell completely into battle mode. It wasn't something he wanted to do to something so adorable, but unfortunately, it was what it was. Even if he wasn't on the job, then he had to do it in order to keep people safe. That was how life worked, after all, and someone had to do it.
It only took Rinoa a few moments to realise the stranger - Caius, wasn’t following her. She slowed her speed to an unsteady halt, turning back to face him as he loaded his weapon, preparing to fight the creature. A combination of amusement and surprise crossed the dark-haired girl’s face from his remark about keeping one as a pet.
Hesitating, Rinoa glanced to the possible shelter of debris not far ahead, then back to Caius, firing at the tonberry. Inhaling a deep breath, shaking her head at her own inability to just run and leave him, even if he did appear to be more than capable, Rinoa started to make her way back to their position. She reached to grab her pinwheel weapon, sliding the sharpened, circular boomerang into the slot on her arm guard.
“Caius, heads up, the little guy’s friends are joining the party!” Rinoa called to the mercenary, certain he would have already spotted the second and third tonberries making their slow approach from the west side.
Whipping around to face them, Rinoa aimed her weapon from one to the other, aligning the shot with the intention of slowing them down. Pressing the release on her arm guard, Rinoa watched with anticipation as the wheel rotated through the air at a fast speed, startling the tonberries for a brief second.
Rinoa lifted her arm as her weapon soared back around towards her, clicking back into place. She knew she wouldn’t be much help to Caius from her exhaustion but she couldn’t just sit back and do nothing, she refused to hide in the corner like a frightened child.
“So what's the plan?” She asked Caius as she quickly approached him, making sure to keep a reasonable distance from the tonberry he was fighting off.
“I can fight from a distance, just say the word.” Now that she was closer to him, Rinoa could see the difference in his expression when he was in combat mode. Although she hadn’t got much of a look at Caius before the tonberry made its move, Rinoa felt the aura around him change.
He looked just like a soldier, just like Squall used to look when he would lose himself in battle too.
Squall... Was he in this world too? Fighting all alone?
It wasn't the time to be thinking of him, or any of her friends - what use would she be to them if she was wounded by tonberries? Rinoa forced herself out of her thoughts and back into the moment, a frown on her face as she concentrated on staying focused.
Caius didn't fear the tonberry. Or well, he was very cautious of the Tonberry. But he certainly wasn't scared of the Tonberry. He would make Tonberry Kabob of this Tonberry if he had to. He'd keep one as a pet if he could too, but he'd also make kabob of this Tonberry if needed! Either way, Caius would quickly reload the Gunblade, the shotgun-like blast sending the Tonberry flying back. It required a bit of his energy per shot and he knew he was going to have to rotate shots with the blade portion, but at the same time... Their size would make that difficult, he knew.
“Caius, heads up, the little guy’s friends are joining the party!”
"Got it" Caius would respond as more tonberry would join the party. Was it Tonberry or Tonberries? He wasn't sure, honestly, but it didn't matter right now. He would quickly survey the territory, the former Glaive doing his best to plan ahead and strategize as early in the conflict as possible before he could be overwhelmed. A second and third tonberry were heading for him, but the young man refused to back down. Bringing down the hatch, he would strike downward, with the tonberry blocking the blade with surprising speed and accuracy considering how small the knife was. "Fuck" Caius would mutter as he would be forced to jump back when the Tonberry would stab at him. While he was avoiding it, the other Tonberry would also stab at him, and Caius would hop back again, his eyes widening in shock at their speed. He also noticed the first tonberry beginning to make it's return entrance.
With a weapon he didn't recognize, Rinoa would join the party, launching a shot of some kind at the tonberries and startling them. Taking advantage of the opening, Caius would bring the gunblade Lonoaw down on the shoulder of one of them, dealing serious damage before he caught their attention again.
Two of the three tonberries now headed toward Rinoa after her initial startling them, while Caius would engage the wounded but now alert second Tonberry. The ones heading for Rinoa were the Third and the First, the First lagging behind after being blown away prior. "Keep attacking from a distance! If I can take this one down, I'll join you!" Caius called out to Rinoa. "If they get too close, make more distance! Don't worry about me, I can catch up quickly! Just keep them off me for a little bit longer!"
