II. PERSONA
Growing up during the Ten Years of Darkness, Caius spent much of his life isolated and focusing on honing his skills. While this paved the way to his skill on the battlefield, Caius is stinted on a social level. There are many social cues that he doesn't understand, and aspects of common culture that elude him. But Caius has also proven to be a quick study, something that comes from one of his greatest strengths -- his passion. When Caius sets his mind something, he will passionately pursue it to the best of his abilities. Unwavering, stubborn and determined to do what needs to be done, Caius gives 200% to everything that he does to the point it sometimes looks absolutely ridiculous. He is a practical minded man, always considering what will benefit the mission. If his lack of understanding of a land's culture becomes a problem, he will do everything in his power to rectify it.
Despite this, his practical thoughts are always well-intentioned. His time with friends, allies and the Dragonblades has carved through his once-icy exterior and brought out a warm, gentle and compassionate soul. Caius' goals are commonly catered towards helping people and what he can do in order to do so. Once in service to the people of Lucis, Caius continues to fly with the heart of a Kingsglaive. His personal travels, as well as the formation of the Dragonblades are primarily motivated by the intention to help and protect in any way that he can. His well-meaning nature combined with guilt over his past actions. Of course, now that the world isn't in danger all the time, Caius has found that he enjoys the adventure. While his workaholic tendencies keep him from sitting still for too long, Caius thoroughly enjoys travelling as well as the thrill and rush of combat. He enjoys fishing, working on weaponry and interacting with animals. Caius enjoys telling stories, amping up the drama and seeing people's faces light up when he has them hooked on the edge of their seats.
While seemingly quiet and stoic on the surface, his warmer and more gentle side comes out when he is comfortable. Caius epitomizes a gentle giant, always speaking formally and respectfully, and constantly considering others, typically over himself and his own personal needs. While Caius is fairly socially awkward, he does try his best. He has developed a bit of a dry wit as well, and seems to enjoy making people laugh if he can. When someone has earned Caius' respect, he will speak glowingly of them. Perhaps sometimes even a bit too glowingly, which can lead to misunderstandings. With little in the name of social tact, this can be a disaster. Caius is blunt and honest to a fault, and he has difficulty in lying. He almost never has an inch of malice in him, though, and at times that can lead to him being a little naive. When it comes to Vordun, a drake that he raised as a hatchling, Caius absolutely adores him. He is shown to be quite patient with the drake's antics, and is very protective of him. Caius can deal with being insulted personally, but any slight on Vordun will be difficult for him to forgive. And if Vordun were to come to harm... Well...
When business comes around, he is a consummate professional. A military man to his core, Caius' entire demeanor changes as he becomes laser focused on the task at hand. He is willing to risk himself for the mission, though even Caius can be made to see reason if his survival is more beneficial to the larger scheme of things. He is loyal to his comrades, and will never even consider betraying them. He is stone cold stoic and serious in battle, almost seeming emotionless at times. In the rare instance his emotions come out though, Caius is arguably at his most dangerous. There have been instances where a darker, angrier side to Caius has come out, and in these dark times, none who stand at the source of his strife are safe. Caius is efficient at what he does, even if that has to include killing a man. He doesn't want to, doesn't like to, but if pushed too far...

III. BACKGROUND
Caius has an extensive combat background with over a decade of experience in battle. He is a resourceful survivalist, and a cunning tactician capable of preparing and executing strategies within moments, utilizing his environment and his array of weapons to their fullest. If possible, he prefers a blow-to-blow sword style, balancing power and strategy to end battles quickly if he can. Granted the power of the Crystal as a Kingsglaive, Caius is capable of summoning his weapons to him for use, as well as being capable of warping, air-control, phasing, and creating barriers. He is also capable of limited magic, able to cast Fire, Fira, Firaga, Blizzard, Blizzara, Thunder, Thundara, Cure and Cura. Having honed his use of the gifts that the King bestowed upon him, Caius has achieved what could be called mastery of his craft.
Caius wields two gunblades, the standard blade Itamen and the double-sided short gunblade Isp. In the absence of ammunition, Caius is able to use his own energy to create energy bullets as a substitute. Itamen is a one-handed sword, with a sleeve over the tip where bullets are fired from. Itamen fires shotgun-like blasts that have a further range and more power, but each shot requires a fair bit of energy and the blade must be reloaded after every shot fired. Itamen is best suited for precision shots. Isp is actually two daggers, both with gunblade capabilities, with a similar design and color scheme to Itamen. Its bullets can be fired in rapid succession and each recharge is good for 20 shots. They take less of Caius' energy, but with their lack of power in comparison to Itamen they are meant to be fired rapidly in order to overwhelm opponents. Caius generally pulls at the blades to split them into the two daggers. If Caius is forced into a situation where he doesn't have a chance to split the blades, pulling the trigger will fire from both ends. The daggers will return to their original form when de-summoned together. If only one is withdrawn, it can be called back separately from the other.
Caius is a skilled weaponsmith, having constructed Itamen and Isp himself by modifying the weapons his father gave him as a child. He also holds an affinity for working with animals and monsters, having the patience to raise and tame Vordun.
IV. HISTORY
Caius was raised on a chocobo farm in the rural areas of Lucis, far away from anything out of the ordinary. Helping his father, mother, brother and sister tend to their chocobos all day long was the life he lived. It was a simple life, but it kept him honest and he wanted for nothing.
And then darkness came.
As Lucis was overtaken by the starscourge and the daemons began to purge the world of life, the family tried their best to keep their business going. It was around this time that Caius was first trained to use a sword by his father. But it wasn't daemons that came for them, but bandits. Looters who waylaid vehicles and settlements for resources, killing everyone that stood in their way. The family tried to hold out, but were quickly overwhelmed. Their home burned and their chocobos taken, their lives were only spared when his father traded their lives for servitude to the bandits. For the next year, Caius was forced to kill, rob and loot for the bandits. The screams of their victims would haunt him for the rest of his life. Caius' skill in combat grew as the bodies piled up, but he never gained the taste for blood that the bandits held. Eventually, his family attempted to escape. Unfortunately, they were caught just before they could reach civilization. One by one, Caius watched his family be cut down. In his final moments, his father gave Caius a sword, a dagger and a firearm before telling him to make a run for it. Sacrificing himself to buy Caius time to flee, his father soon fell while Caius fled to the Lestallum. Their dying throes added to the chorus that would continue to haunt his dreams.
At 13, Caius arrived at the Lestallum with nothing. Nobody to take him in, or even a single gil to his name. With fighting being the only thing he had known from the last few years, Caius managed to trick the hunting commission into thinking him an adult, and took up an occupation as a hunter to support himself. Fighting daemons and monsters for gil, Caius constantly found himself outmatched by stronger opponents, but his stubbornness kept him from backing down from a fight, and his developing resourcefulness kept him alive. A common sight over the years was a young man bloodied and battered, always only a step or two away from death's door, dragging himself into town. Half dead, but victorious. Burying himself completely into honing his skills as a warrior, Caius became a respected hunter with experience and skill well beyond his years. The money was never enough to do anything more than let him eat for the week or get him to and from his next job, but he managed.
But he lacked a purpose. He was just fighting to survive, and nothing more. He felt empty inside. Even if the Chosen King returned as the fables said he would and rid the star of its scourge, what would Caius even do then? Would he just fight until he died? Even with his growth as a fighter capable of surviving the wild west of Lucis on his own, he was bound to fight something that would off him eventually. And deep down he knew that he would die unfulfilled, and empty. Even if he knew it was likely impossible, he still yearned for a purpose. But an opportunity came when the Chosen King did indeed arrive. As if drawn to trouble, the hunter had previously journeyed to Insomnia, joining the Kingsglaive in their final stand against the daemons. The hunter had been in the bunker when the Chosen King returned and gave his rallying cry, with words that would resonate with him for the rest of his life.
"Brothers and sisters, brave warriors of Lucis... You've done well these ten years. And I thank you. You've done so much, all for my sake... Even as the darkness overcame our world, we kept the light in our hearts. We've all lost friends and loved ones along the way, but the one thing we never lost was hope. Brothers and sisters, I ask you to stand by me and fight by my side - for the light and for the future of our world!"
Something about his words called to him. Something about those words inspired the hunter to fight harder than he had ever fought before. With Noctis back and his retinue having prepared well for this day, they were able to replenish the number of Kingsglaive for the final push. Recognized for his ability, Caius was offered a place with the Kingsglaive, an offer he accepted. Granted the Power of Kings, Caius took part in the final charge to rid the world of darkness. While Noctis and his retinue stormed the citadel, Caius' job was to work with the Kingsglaive and clear the way of daemons to keep them away from their King. It was during this battle that Caius caught a glimpse of the Astral Ifrit, a sight that would be burned into his mind forever. It was also during this battle that Caius sighted a very familiar group of bandits, trying to take advantage of the chaos and rob those who had taken solace in their camp. Something stirred within Caius in those moments. It was this moment where the weapon the bandits had tried to turn Caius into as a child, would turn against them. Fueled by underlying rage, Caius promptly slaughtered the group of bandits, avenging the deaths of his family. He was not proud of the brutal manner that he had done so, but it was done. Still, it was a side of himself that he had promised to keep locked away, if he could.
In the end, they were able to stop the Starscourge, and light returned to their world. With Noctis having miraculously survived the battle, Caius found his purpose with the Kingsglaive, spending the next two years aiding in rebuilding Lucis and protecting the man that would be its ruler. But a day came that an assassin attempted to take the life of the King. Being in the vicinity, the young Glaive would give chase. Tackling them down, his quarry's expression twisted into unyielding hatred as he loosed a scream, plunging a glowing dagger into Caius' chest. Retaliating quickly, Caius moved to kill the assassin, even if it cost him his life. It is unknown what happened after that, as Caius awoke in the middle of a field on the side of the road. The grass was green, birds were singing, and the world was full of life... One thing was immediately clear. This was not Lucis.
Caius made his way to the city of Torensten, and found out soon after that he and many others had been sent to a place called Zephon, a melting pot of different worlds with seemingly no way to get back. Caius had ended one adventure, begun another... And had it promptly taken from him. Once more, he was left with nothing. No family to call his own, and not a contact or a single gil to his name. It all began anew, as Caius went back to the only thing he knew how to do. Traveling the world as a freelance mercenary, Caius once more walked with no purpose. At least, until Celes came along. The pair became close, and found themselves working together regularly. On a job investigating an undead presence, Caius came face to face with something he had thought he would never see again. Daemons. Summoned by the very assassin that had played part in the end of his time in Eos. The man's hatred for Caius in particular was revealed, as his intentions to resurrect his wife through use of experimenting with daemons were once foiled by Caius' own father. And he in turn had tipped the bandits off to the location of Caius' family, setting off the chain of events that had changed Caius' life. The man, Cortez, would then reveal he had reanimated the bodies of his fallen family for his own uses, capable of summoning them at will. Forced to fight his siblings, Caius regretfully struck down his own brother, but he was unable to strike his sister. He broke down, and pled to please make it stop. The sadistic Cortez granted his wish, though not in the way Caius wanted. Painfully destroying the body of the one he cared so much for, Cortez broke Caius mentally and left him for dead, thinking him no longer a threat and one he could kill at his own leisure. It was Celes that was able to bring Caius back to his senses, and keep him from doing something that he would regret. Instead of blindly pursuing revenge, Caius returned to his roots as a Kingsglaive, deciding he wanted to once more help and protect people from monsters like Cortez. As a result, Caius, Celes and the recently hatched Vordun became the founding members of the Dragonblades, a mercenary unit that doubled as a peacekeeping force. Together, perhaps they could keep this world and its people safe from Cortez and other monsters that threatened them. In time, others joined them and the Dragonblades came to blows with The Original Sin. A crime syndicate that had been ravaging Zephon, the Original Sin proved to be a threat to Zephon and its people, and Caius was more than happy for the Dragonblades to answer the call. To protect the people... He had found his purpose.
And then darkness came.

She had heard of the Dragonblades! Well, that did make things a bit easier in introductions and explanations and the like. Caius could talk about the Dragonblades forever, but he was sure she wouldn’t want him to take up all day just telling her what they were and what they did. He truly was passionate about their work, but even he knew that he could get just a little bit carried away. He didn’t want to come off as rude, or like he was willingly wasting her time. Lady like her probably had places to go, things to do, people to see. She just seemed the type.
Still, he couldn’t help but feel a little bit of pride knowing that the Dragonblades were known even to strangers in the area. Finally! They were getting somewhere! Their dream was starting to become a reality, as the more their reputation got around, the more likely they’d be to get more work, more chances to help people. More gil to prepare them to help people more. More helping people! And more security for the people knowing that the Dragonblades were around and happy to help where they could, no matter where the King’s men were or whatever they were doing. Knowing they were doing their part even in some small way just made Caius glow with happiness and pride. And pride wasn’t something he felt often. But knowing their little baby organization had sprouted…
But they really did have their hands full. And that got a laugh out of him. “We really do” he admitted shamelessly. “We really do.”
Jessie clarified that she was an actor, playing in a trope. Caius knew what plays were, though he hadn’t ever gotten a chance to see one. He’d seen movies back home, older ones on a little TV screen, but… While he had heard of plays, he’d never actually seen one in the flesh. Suddenly her explanation got a lot more interesting. Not that she wasn’t an interesting one in the first place, of course, but a new experience was always going to catch his attention. “I haven’t heard of the trope unfortunately, nor have I ever actually seen a play” he admitted. But then he smiled warmly. “Perhaps I’ll go and see one next your trope is in town? Seeing a play for the first time is enough reason, but getting to see you on stage is worth the trip all on its own” he teased just a little, a bit of a cheeky tint to his voice. Caius wasn’t often caught teasing and being cheeky. Especially with someone new. But sometimes there were exceptions, it seemed. It was good news, overall.
She didn’t know what she did before coming to Zephon. Interesting. “Memory issues. They seem to crop up here and there when people pop up here from other worlds” he brought up. “Could just take time, or need a trigger. But I’m sure a smart young lady like you will figure it out eventually” Caius tried to reassure her in turn. Stressing that she wasn’t alone and it was likely curable was the right thing to do, he figured. It would hopefully ease her stress going forward. She also stressed she could handle monsters, she’d just been surprised. He didn’t have an answer to that. Perhaps he would find out the truth to that sooner or later?
Vordun seemed to have taken a shining to her, and when she called Vordun amazing, Caius’ expression seemed to light up. After all the terrible ways people had treated Vordun, it was incredible to hear someone say that. “He really is” he spoke softly as Vordun responded to her scratching at his jaw by kicking his leg out repeatedly. That got a laugh out of Caius. He was definitely like some kind of cat.
Jessie apologized for needing the help, but he shook his head. “Don’t worry about it. It’s what we do. And it’s like you said, it just caught you by surprise” he spoke up, reminding her of what she said earlier with a playful little smile. “You’re always free to come by the training yard and spar to brush up, if you want.”
