Last time Caius had been in Sonora, it had been to try and help defend against the assortment of dragon attacks, driving the creatures as far away from the capital as possible. But he had been distracted and unsuccessful last time. This time, he had gotten the help of his fellow Dragonblade Yuna, as well as an ally in Rem. Caius had arrived before them, and he and Vordun had been wandering the city looking for a place to stay as well as a method of transportation. Sonora's surrounding areas were much larger than that of Torensten and Provo, and would take longer to traverse. While Caius didn't mind the travel time to get here, even if he knew he couldn't come here often thanks to that, he knew that if they were to move through the region for work they would need a method of transport.
Along the way, he had met a woman from his world. An experience which had completely soured Caius' mood by the time the two had arrived. Caius had been quieter than usual throughout, and had spoken with fairly short answers throughout while they found a place to rent a vehicle. When they got there, it turned out that a license was required to drive. One that would be both expensive and time-consuming to obtain. But Caius had come prepared. Fishing out a wallet from his jacket, a keepsake from his world, Caius had pulled out a piece of identification from Lucis that indicated he was capable of driving. He was laughed at, at first, but it was easy to tell it wasn't forged either. An impromptu driving test to prove his claims later and while Caius was rusty, he'd managed to pass and with a bit of gil was able to be assigned a new license valid in Sonora. After that, the group rented a cheap vehicle, a 4-seater that would accommodate them as well as Vordun, who at this point had hit the limitations of large dog sizes and would probably start looking like a really small horse before long. But thanks to there only being three of them, they were able to get him to fit with some seat adjustment. Caius had gleamed the location of a place one of the dragons was hiding out, taken the bounty on warding it off or killing it, and they were on their way.
Caius could admit he was still a little nervous about driving on the open road, but once they had started... Well, it reminded him a lot of home. He was curious how the other two and Vordun would hold up. It was a beautiful afternoon out though, the sun was out and a coastline was beginning to come into view. He tried to focus on that from the corner of his eye... Anything to distract him from what he had done. What he had said when he had met the Oracle.
"I used to live in one of these" Caius would reveal. "Back in my own world. Economy was bad, could never afford a place of my own. Had the most beat up looking car in the world. Too small for me too, considering my size. I used to sleep with the door open a crack for my feet to fit through, and had trip mines set up around the vehicle if anything tried to get near. Was a hell of an alarm clock."
He realized he wasn't sure if their worlds had ever had mines. Or used the word. So he clarified.
"Bombs. They're bombs. Explosives."

I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them, but no more!
Yuna hadn’t yet been any further north than Provo, so she jumped at the chance when Caius had extended an invitation to join him in Sonora. It had taken her a few days journey to reach the city gates, and she just hoped that the others weren’t waiting on her. She hadn’t expected the temperature to change so drastically, so she’d had to stop at one point to acquire a coat, and then she mostly went on foot after it had gotten too cold for a chocobo to travel comfortably. But Yuna didn’t mind. Her entire pilgrimage would have been by foot or by boat, and at least it wasn’t nearly as cold here as it was in Mt. Gagazet. This wasn’t so bad.
By the time Yuna had reached the gates of Sonora, she had to press one hand to her mouth as she considered the towering buildings and the lights that made the city look as bright as day. This place was even bigger than Bevelle and Luca were back home. How was it even possible to make buildings so tall? As Yuna cautiously crept down the street in search of Caius, she kept eyeing the structures around her nervously, waiting for an ominous creek to signal that one was about to fall. Surely they had to sometimes, right?
With some relief, Yuna eventually spotted her blond-haired friend standing outside a smaller building along with a brunette girl in a red cape and checkered skirt. She noticed immediately during the introductions that Caius was a bit more curt than usual, and she gave him a concerned glance to see if he was alright, but she didn’t want to pry. Particularly not in front of a stranger. She just hoped that Caius would bring it up when he was ready.
Yuna smiled at Rem as they were introduced to each other. She was a petite girl who looked to be around Yuna’s age. She had a friendly, soft-spoken voice that Yuna liked immediately, and she quickly brought her hands together to give her a bow in the traditional Yevon style. “I’m Yuna. It’s nice to meet you, Rem. How do you two know each other?” She glanced between Caius and Rem as they set off down the street, hoping for a good story as Caius went about procuring them transportation.
Yuna had assumed that Caius had meant chocobos, so her eyes widened a bit when he drove up in a small, sleek vehicle that looked similar to the other ones zooming their way past them in the streets. “We’re going in a piece of machina?” She asked a bit hesitantly, leaning forward to look over the ‘car.’ Yuna had accepted by now that Zephon didn’t operate under the same rules as Spira. There were no laws here against forbidden machina and no Sin in place to punish people for using it. But old habits and beliefs were hard to break, so she still had to bite her tongue a bit as she cautiously eased her way in the backseat to share it with Vordun. If only Lulu and Wakka could see her now. Wouldn’t they be surprised?
“We’re going so fast,” Yuna breathed, sitting forward to stare at the world flashing by outside her window. “Is this 'car' like an airship?”
Caius started to explain that he used to live in a car, and Yuna blinked in surprise as she looked forward at the backs of both of their heads. “Bombs?” Yuna let out a short laugh. “You always have the most interesting stories. Was sleeping in your car dangerous then?”
She once again took a peek out her window, deciding that it was making her less dizzy now that she was getting more used to it. “I’ve never been in anything like this before,” she admitted. “Machina like this is forbidden where I come from…” Glancing forward again, she gave the girl in the passenger seat a faint smile “What about you, Rem?”
Sonora, to be honest, reminded her strongly of her home back in her world of Orience.
While her mind went wild with the Akademia towering over the structures here as she imagined it in this place, it was easy to see why Caius wanted them to meet up here—wait, there was something about a car mentioned? And then the ‘fire-breathing bird’ that he had the last time?
…wait, it wasn’t a fire-breathing bird no longer, it had grown so, so much since then!
To her surprise, though, she belatedly realized that she wasn’t going alone with him, unlike the last time they’d punched out some Chocobo Eater’s brains. They were accompanied by someone who looked—rather extraordinarily dressed for the area, clearly someone not from around here.
Well, she’d known by now that there were a lot of people around the place who didn’t come from their home worlds—Caius being one of them. And then there was that peppy pink-haired female with the Moogle, Serah, she thought the name was like. And then there was… was she getting the name mixed up, was it Aerith or Aeris? Blame her and her accent, she may have gotten it wrong!
Either way, their companion for today was Yuna—the name rolled easily off her tongue. What amused her was the greeting, there was a bow—remembering a split-second later that Yuna very possibly wasn’t from her world, she wasn’t dressed like a Class Zero student. Wait, what if she had a uniform—no, she would definitely remember if she saw someone with that face, with different-colored eyes.
Not even Naghi and Carla could compare to the various eccentricities she’d encountered so far.
“He helped me chase off a Chocobo Eater. Nasty-looking creature. Huge fists and—are there Chocobo Eaters where you come from? This one loved to blast Blizzard around and cause trouble,” she explained. Wondering how her own little Chocobo egg was doing right now.
She’d left it in the care of the old couple that she was staying with alongside her fellow cadet Ace back in Torensten, and knew by intuition older, friendlier people would fuss over these things more often than not. She wasn’t sure why, but she had an inkling that older people could be much more easily trusted as compared to back in Orience.
She tried to imitate the greeting that Yuna had given, her, however instead ended up curtsying in response. “I—well, it’s a pleasure to meet you,” she replied with a friendly eyebrow crinkle. This was before Caius drove up, with the ‘dog’ now having reached… larger-sized proportions.
Wait, what?
All too soon they piled into the vehicle, and at least for her, she was somewhat used to riding in something like this—they took the airship more often back home in Orience when they were deployed out for missions and the like.
“Bombs—explosives? How are you even still alive?” she asked, turning to face Caius who sat beside her in the front of the car.
The girls seemed to have varying reactions to the vehicle. Both seemed to at least know what it was in some respect. Yuna knew it as "machina", something apparently forbidden in her hand. Rem meanwhile, appeared to recognize the car for what it was. It was always interesting traveling with people from different worlds here in Zephon, seeing their different reactions to things that may or may not be new to them, or be able to lend knowledge that even Caius didn't have.
Caius peered out at the frozen lake nearby a moment, curious if Sonora ever warmed up in certain seasons. His glaive jacket kept him warm enough, but he still preferred the warmer climate of Torensten to Sonora’s colder temperatures. He’d considered one day living in Sonora. It was the closest thing to where he had once lived, after all and it would make the most sense for Caius to settle here. But it was just too damn cold.
Once they were moving, Yuna asked if it was equivalent to an airship. "Sort of, you need a driver there to drive it manually, but it doesn't fly" Caius explained. "I've heard of heavily modified cars back in my world that could fly to a limited extent, but they were crazy expensive, and there were none of those left by the time I was out in the world. Its possible it might have just been rumors, and nothing more."
Caius snorted in mild amusement at their varying reactions to the story, though he did first answer Yuna's question.
“I mentioned in my story to you before that my world was riddled with looters, effectively bandits who had no bounds to cruelty. They would have no qualms about killing me in my sleep and looting whatever I have, then stealing the car. On top of that, as there are no lights outside of the cities and the few remaining outposts, my sleeping out in the open meant I was always in danger of being beset upon by daemons, who would take advantage of my being vulnerable. Which was why whenever I stop to rest and wasn’t in the limits of a city, I always set explosives around the perimeter of wherever I was camping out. That’s just what needed to be done in order to survive back in my world. You trust nobody but yourself, and understand that anyone in your vicinity could rob you or kill you at a moment’s notice. When you sleep is when you are most vulnerable. And people will take advantage of that. If I had any explosives, I’d probably still plant them if I had to camp.”
Old habits die hard, and it wasn’t hard to see why.
To Rem, he looked to his side to see her where she was sitting beside him.
"Well if an intruder comes near the car, they step on the bomb. The bomb goes off, and they go sky high, and the bombs are just far away enough to not blow up my car and me in it. And the explosion ensures I'm awake if they have friends. I had to do this after the equivalent to a bandit ripped me out of my car and pointed a gun at my head. I brought out mine and shot first, but the experience taught me to take precautions, and to ensure I can deal with a numbers game too for if someone like that guy had friends."

I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them, but no more!
Yuna liked what she’d seen of Rem so far, though she had to fight a bit of embarrassment when the girl looked perplexed by her bow and curtsied in return. She knew in her head that the typical Yevon prayer wasn’t used as a greeting in Zephon, but she somehow couldn’t bring herself to stop using it yet. It would feel too much like giving up on Spira.
“You fought a chocobo eater?” She asked, raising one hand to her mouth. “We have them, but they’re rare. I’m glad you two made it out okay.” Something about the mention of the monster sent a flash through her head of the smiling blond boy that she’d been slowly remembering lately. His face had looked more intense than normal as he had proclaimed that protecting the chocobos was the right thing to do.
Before Yuna could puzzle too much over the fuzzy memory, Caius had driven up and they had all set out in the car. In the backseat, Yuna gently stroked the side of Vordun’s neck as she stared out the window at the icy landscape flashing by. Feeling a little dizzy, she turned her attention forward towards Rem’s headrest as Caius explained the differences between a “car” and an airship. Chuckling, he then went on to describe how he had previously had to set up bombs whenever he slept in his car, and Yuna had to fight a small giggle as well. It wasn’t funny in the slightest of course that his life had been in danger or that he’d had to hurt people to survive. But something about Caius’ casual tone when he talked about it made it easier to discuss.
“Your world sounds like it was a hard place to live before Noctis,” she said, though she supposed that maybe that’s what a world that had never known Sin would turn out like. Hadn’t Spira once been overwhelmed with war and machina before Sin had come and Yevon had spread its teachings?
“I’ve only seen bombs used a few times,” she admitted, trying to picture a younger Caius planting them around his car. “Most forms of machina are forbidden in my world. But some people tried to use them anyway against Sin.” Not usually to any great effect, but the horrors that Sin inflicted likely didn’t make for good travel conversation. “I’m getting used to it, but it’s still odd to see this kind of tool used so openly,” Yuna said instead with a slight smile.
She glanced at Rem to see if the brunette girl had anything to add before she snuck a glance at the window again.
“Ah...By the way. How do you keep from being dizzy at the speed?” She murmured to both of them a bit sheepishly. “Does it take practice? Or do you think Esuna would help?”
