[attr="class","ayab-text"] Ifalna had no doubt she would be on the receiving end of a scolding once she made it back to the room she was still sharing with Yugiri. Her physical state had improved so much after the endless days of bedrest, but she could no longer ignore the restlessness that had settled into her very bones. These last years had seen her mobility restricted to a wheelchair because the pain had become too much for her to endure. Now she was able to stand on her own two feet and walk forward without the worry that more experiments would haunt her days. The ache of what she had endured was a phantom one that caused her to stumble a step forward before she quickly braced herself against a wall to regain her balance. Inhaling deeply, Ifalna had to force herself to take her steps slowly but with purpose. The confines of her inn room allowed her to walk in relative safety, but she needed to do this for herself. [break][break]
"One step at a time, right?" A soft, murmured question for her ears alone as Ifalna continued forward. Her worries for Aerith were nearly overwhelming when she allowed herself to dwell upon it. Had her daughter even been brought here? The possibility of never seeing her daughter again would soon see her ripping her heart from her own chest than considering for too long. Her entire purpose these last years had been her darling girl and now she did not know what to do without her here. What was a mother meant to do without her child? The longing tasted bittersweet upon her tongue as it nearly drove the breath from her lungs. Perhaps she should have stayed back in the inn after all with these thoughts and worries haunting her like a ghost. [break][break]
Luckily, there was a bench not too far away for her to rest upon. A soft sigh of relief escaped her as Ifalna eased herself onto the seat. Her legs ached from the exertion of walking this far, and she knew she should be proud of herself for that alone. It would take longer than she wished for her body to recover fully. What had once been so natural for her was now akin to a toddler learning to walk for the first time. Leaning her head back, she closed her eyes to enjoy the simple sensation of the warmth of the sun against her cheeks. Provo was a beautiful city that surpassed the upper plates of Midgar, and it thrived without the need to sustaining itself with the very lifeblood of Zephon. That was still a worrisome fact, though. Zephon had no lifestream that she could sense so how did this world sustain itself through the cycle of life and death? Where did the souls of those that lived here naturally even go? More questions she had no answers to, unfortunately.
[attr="class","ayab-text"] "No, it isn't because of them at all," Ifalna replied quietly with a slight twist to her lips. Recalling her long years spent in captivity would take a long time for her to recover from. The tortures and experimentations she had endured lingered upon her very skin and deep within her spirit as well. For a Cetra like herself to spend so long in a city such as Midgar had been another form of torture as the planet had screamed it's pain at her. The loss of life and souls that should have been able to rejoice in the embrace of the Promised Land--only to be torn away to fuel the ambitions of Shinra Electric Company and the wars that had prospered from it. "I spent nearly a decade imprisoned and experimented upon because I was the last of my kind. Because I would rather endure such pains than see them foisted upon my daughter." [break][break]
There was nothing for Yugiri to apologize for--curiosity in itself need not be a sin. Who was she to deny answers to the younger woman after how caring and helpful she had been? Ifalna would admit that there was a catharsis in sharing her pain with another--as she had never been able to do so these last years. How could she? Her daughter was but a child and did not need to know more than she already did with what her mother went through. Aerith was her greatest treasure and she wished their life together had been different--happier. The young mother held many regrets, but she would never regret falling in love with Gast or having her daughter. She simply wished Shinra had never learned of her existence or believed the Cetra to be the answers to their ambitions. [break][break]
"Hush now," she murmured gently, running her fingers through Yugiri's hair again. "Failure is something that can't be avoided, but I don't believe you failed. We can't always protect those closest to us no matter how hard we try." It was a lesson Ifalna had learned all too well and had spent years wrestling with. The guilt, the shame, and the fear that at some point neither herself or Aerith would ever escape. "All we can do is pick ourselves back up and try again." [break][break]

[attr="class","ayab-text"] "That sounds almost similar to another race I know of--the guardians of a placed called Cosmo Canyon. They're quadrupeds that resemble a lion almost, but they are quite sentient and long-lived," Ifalna explained, brow furrowing as she attempted to remember their name. The young woman could remember Hojo mentioning such a race when on one of his rants regarding the preservation of such precious life. A chill settled within the base of her spine as she thought of the insane scientist. The continued aches and scars upon her body were because of him and she doubted she would ever truly be the woman she had been before being captured. Some scars were far deeper than any physical ones that lingered--and much more difficult to heal as well. [break][break]
Should she be worried that Yugiri was so adamant about having someone to serve? Ifalna was trying her best to understand such a notion, but it was a culture and belief far different from her own. ...or was it, truly? Did her own people not serve the planet as caretakers to her will? Perhaps it was not such an unfamiliar motive to her after all. "Thank you." Was more could she even say? Ifalna had been quite blessed to awaken in this world and have someone so quickly come to her aid and continue to do so. Smiling in slight victory, she happily pulled Yugiri onto the bed and arrange her into a comfortable position. She had often done so with Aerith when her bundle of energy could simply not stay still. [break][break]
"That's alright. As long as you don't mind nightmares." Her smile was a wan one as she considered how she had learned to silently scream in her sleep as to not awaken her daughter. Ifalna had refused to add more fear into her daughter's life with her own pain and sorrow. Perhaps she would be able to learn how to sleep peacefully with more time and knowing that this was not a dream. "I would like that, Yugiri. Tell me everything and anything that you'd like." Reaching out, she began to idly brush her fingers through Yugiri's hair as she hummed a soft lullaby. [break][break]
[attr="class","ayab-text"] "I've never been to Wutai myself, but I believe that they do," Ifalna stated with a somewhat furrowed brow. They had held enough pride in themselves to fight back against Shinra to the point of a truce. That was certainly not something to overlook or frown upon. "Hmm, humans in my world share a similar appearance to myself, but our differences lie in the spiritual connection we held with our star. The Cetra were the caretakers of the planet until a calamity took place that nearly wiped my people out. Over time my people were never able to fully recover their numbers until I was the last one--and my daughter, too." The diversity in her world was not as readily apparent as it seemed to be for Yugiri and her home. There were certainly other sentient beings upon Gaia, but Ifalna had not had the pleasure to meet them herself after she had been captured. [break][break]
A laugh bubbled against her lips as Yugiri resisted her attempts to get her to rest. She should have realized that sleeping in such armor would not be the most comfortable thing to do, so she sat back up and twined her fingers together to rest her hands upon her lap. In politeness, Ifalna cast her gaze to a corner of the room to give the shinobi some sort of privacy. It was also rude to stare no matter her curiosity in how much those pearlescent scales covered the younger woman. Once she seemed to be finished undressing, Ifalna looked back to Yugiri with a tilt of her head at the unexpected chuckle. Was what she said truly so difficult to imagine? Perhaps it was for someone so dedicated in serving another. [break][break]
Her words died against her lips as Yugiri revealed some more of her history and she felt unsure of what reassurances she could even offer. It took time for someone to step past the mold they had created for themselves--whether out of necessity or from being born into it. It seemed that for Yugiri it was because of both. Ifalna watched with a wide-eyed gaze as the shinobi suddenly knelt before her with her dagger proffered to her as some sort of offering. The pleading words felt like a crack to her heart in the face of a woman who knew only to serve others and perhaps not herself. For a few moments, all the young mother could manage was silence as she tried to piece together her emotions and thoughts at this solemn vow placed before her. [break][break]
"Okay," Ifalna said simply, leaning forward to place both of her hands upon Yugiri's shoulders. "If this is what you really want, then I won't say no. Please, don't look at me as your superior or someone you need to serve without thought. I'd welcome any words and thoughts you want to share with me without permission or worry." This was not something she had ever anticipated, nor was she quite sure what to do with someone that wished to serve her. No, she did not quite like that word. A bodyguard, perhaps? Ifalna had an easier time agreeing if she thought of Yugiri as simply a friend helping her, which was still true.
[attr="class","ayab-text"] The tail around her waist was a comforting gesture that Ifalna appreciated. Her appearance truly was striking as her world was populated mostly by humans. Her pearl-hued scales really were lovely to look at especially as the sunlight hit them at a certain angle. Humming idly, she listed as Yugiri opened more of her inner emotions as thoughts. "It's difficult to slow yourself down when there's so much you wish to accomplish. My thoughts of Aerith are never far from my mind, but I have to remind myself she needs me at my best after spending so much of her life in poor health." Her daughter had deserved so much more than the life she had experienced even as she had done her best to keep Aerith's spirits up and her mind filled with all the dazzling adventures they would one day have. [break][break]
"In my world, we have shinobi as well. They hail from the nation of Wutai and hold their honor very preciously," Ifalna mused as she tried to remember everything she had learned about the far-off country. It was most likely not complete same as it was in Yugiri's world, but the concept sounded similar enough. "No one in this world is without flaw or fault, and there's no inherent shame in that. Our mistakes...shape who we are and the decisions we want to make going forward. Each day is a new one to start again no matter how difficult it may feel." Reaching forward, Ifalna would grasp both of Yugiri's hands within her own to help steady them. Her smile was a gentle one as her friend worried about being a burden or somehow failing her. She somewhat doubted Yugiri would be able to fail anyone purposely. [break][break]
Another soft hum escaped her before she pulled the younger woman onto the bed to lay down with her. It was certainly large enough to rest them both and she was not one to toss her turn in her sleep. "In this world be your own master, Yugiri. Find a purpose for yourself that makes you happy. It's a hard thing to find for anyone, but you should live your life for yourself, too." Her own purpose had become raising her daughter to the best of her abilities in spite of the captive life they had lead. Continuing to smile, Ifalna brushed back the strands of Yugiri's hair in a motherly fashion.
[attr="class","ayab-text"]Ifalna smiled just a little sheepishly as Yugiri called her out far too easily on her strained attempts at exercising. Bedrest truly was her best option right now but she needed to move and push herself just a little so her muscles would not regress even more than they had. The adrenaline that had aided her in her escape from Shinra had truly drained what strength had remained to her without the aid of a wheelchair or the painkillers that had been secreted to her by Faz. Her stubborn streak was renewing itself the longer she remained in this room, but she could see how tired Yugiri was as well. It was unfair of her to take the bed so entirely as it left her new friend with only a chair to rest in. "I understand. My recovery will be a slow one, but I do need to strengthen my muscles after I spent so long in that....place. I do not wish to burden you more than I already have." [break][break]
Disappointment bloomed within her chest as Yugiri explained the false lead that had been given to her. There was more to the story as the younger woman shifted in ways that hinted at a stiff, bruised body. Ifalna would certainly know as she had often masked such pain herself whenever she was brought back to the room she had shared with Aerith. Raising her hand, she relied on the materia in her possession to heal whatever injuries Yugiri had sustained. She did not have the energy within herself to cast the magic without aid just yet. Soon she would do her best to regain control over her abilities without this weakness plaguing her body. "You should take your own advice, you know," she teased with a light smile. [break][break]
Yugiri had been pushing herself on her behalf, and she did not wish for her to exhaust herself so entirely if Aerith was not even in this city. It pained her to even acknowledge that fact, but Ifalna would not take advantage of more of Yugiri's kindness. "Please, you have done enough for now. Stay and rest yourself. As you said, we must work at it slowly no matter how much it pains us to admit otherwise." Reaching up, she rested her hand upon Yugiri's shoulder with another reassuring smile. Her sense of urgency to find Aerith burned within her so constantly that it haunted her each and every thought. What if her little girl as lost and alone? What if she had been unable to find a kind soul as her mother had? What if she was crying for her to come find her? Ifalna took a moment to swallow down the fear and guilt that threatened to overwhelm her as she took another steadying breath. [break][break]
"All things will fall into place as they should. We just need to be patient and take one step forward at a time." The advice was to herself as much as it was for Yugiri to hear as well. Poor Arashi no doubt needed a rest as well. Even Ifalna would find it quite difficult to ignore the presence of the large bird that seemed to serve as the shinobi's familiar.
[attr="class","ayab-text"] The past couple of days had been uneventful as sleep pulled Ifalna into it's healing embrace. All she had been able to wake for was food to keep up her strength and a much needed bath to aid the soreness of her muscles and to cleanse herself. Yugiri had truly been a welcome presence in aiding in her recovery, and Ifalna wished she was able to do more. Her green eyes parted open to greet the midmorning sun with a soft sigh. Rest was important to regain her strength, but she knew she needed to gain back stability within her muscles. There had been so much of her time spent in a wheelchair from the pain of the experiments placed upon her before being delivered back into a bed with no chance to recuperate before everything would start once more. The warmth and security of the blankets was such a security when she knew no one awaited her outside of the room to bring her back to that cold, dark laboratory. [break][break]
Shifting herself up, she swung her legs over the edge of the bed before reaching out towards the nightstand. Within the small, richly embroidered pouch sat the White Materia. It swirled gently with the knowledge of the Ancients as she peered inside to reassure herself that once more she was awake and that she had not passed on this burden to Aerith so soon. Worried flared within her heart as she thought of her daughter possibly out within this city of the world all alone. She took a moment to inhale deeply before exhaling the worries out with the next breath. Ifalna could not allow herself to dwell on such negative thoughts or the sorrow truly would drown her within it's waves. Her daughter needed her to regain her strength so she could be the proper mother Aerith had always needed--not the shadow of a woman too weak to keep Aerith truly safe. [break][break]
Tying the pouch back up, Ifalna set it to the side before gingerly rising to her feet. Her legs wavered beneath her for a moment, but she managed to push herself forward with a few ginger steps. Time was not a luxury she had to recover fully so she needed to do her best to push herself to the limits her body would allow her. One foot in front of the other as she walked around the small inn room at least three times before collapsing back onto the bed. The simple motion of just walking nearly took all of her energy as she took the time to regain her breath. The sound of the door opening had Ifalna lifting her gaze to seek out Yugiri. "Good morning, Yugiri."
[attr="class","ayab-text"] The animosity ran too deeply to simply be cast away. Ifalna believed she could understand that sentiment quite well from her years of capture beneath Shinra's thumb. No doubt there were good people that worked for the company that were ignorant of their true intentions, but she did not believe herself capable of ever truly trusting someone from that horrid place. One man in particular made her heart twist in fear and her mind race: Professor Hojo. If she never saw him again, then she would live a truly contented life. May the man never find the rest he would have received should his spirit enter the lifestream. All she could hope was that the planet would reject such a horrible man as some knowledge was best left to die with the holder of it. Shaking away her thoughts, Ifalna smiled at Yugiri once more as she squeezed her arm in reassurance. [break][break]
"We all fall prey to moments of weakness and doubt. It's what makes us human after all. You made the choice to help someone instead of following your desire for vengeance," she spoke gently. This Lord Hien obviously meant much to the younger woman with how highly she spoke of him and of her loyalty in following such a man. "I'm flattered you compare me to someone you hold in such high esteem. Please have hope that you'll see your lord again. In the meantime, I hope you're okay with my company as I don't think I'll be traveling much on my own for awhile." A light laugh and brightened green eyes as Yugiri once more promised to help her search for her daughter. Oh, how she wished to tell Yugiri to not go to any more trouble on her behalf, but Ifalna would be selfish in taking this offered help to seek out Aerith. Her little girl needed her mother to be strong, which would not happen without rest first. [break][break]
The room that awaited them was simple in design and it was perhaps the most beautiful thing she had seen in such a long time. Somewhere quiet and peaceful without the threat of Hojo summoning her for another day of tortured experiments. Needles digging into her skin as he took a scalpel to her scarred arms or legs to bring forth more pain in order to get her to tell him what he wanted. Ifalna had never said a single word nor had she given him the pleasure of hearing her scream. Empty promises of allowing the pain to end if only she told them what Shinra wished to know, but she would die before she would ever lead them to what they believed the Promised Land to be. The memories haunted her for a few moments before she shook her head to right herself to this new reality of hers now. [break][break]
"Thank you so much." Tears burned at her eyes at such forthright kindness that she took both of Yugiri's hands within her own. "You're doing more for me than I have any right to ask, and I won't forget this." Gingerly, Ifalna made her way to the bed as she slid off her shoes to rest upon bed without worrying about what would happen when she opened her eyes once more. Perhaps this sleep would come more peacefully to her for the first time in the past several years.
[attr="class","ayab-text"] It seemed there were no more words to be had as Yugiri was receptive to the words Ifalna spoke. She did her best not to visibly slump in relief that the possible altercation was averted, but there was an ease as she relaxed her stance and let herself be lead forward by the shorter woman. For some reason, she had a feeling that this Solus would seek her out. Her senses had been dulled over the years from the experiments she had endured but she could still sense the shift in his emotions. It was not information she would have voluntarily given under normal circumstances--these were not normal circumstances, though. Her words had been enough to calm Yugiri and that was what mattered to her. Ifalna would keep her secrets more closely guarded once she had regained her strength. Perhaps the shock of being delivered to entirely different world without the flow of a lifestream would settle upon her soon as well. [break][break]
As of now, Ifalna allowed herself the joy of the blissful silence of not hearing the pained cries from the planet. It felt like blasphemy to think of such a thing, but she was sure the silence would allow her an easier time in recovering. "There is nothing to forgive, Yugiri." It had been a moment of high emotion the younger woman had been able to come down from. A sudden flare of magic brushed against her senses, and Ifalna knew that this Solus had gone with their attention no longer upon him. It seemed he had done his good deed and decided that now was the time to exit. A boon given the tenseness Yugiri still held closely to her, so she would not mention he had departed. It was often easier to focus on the plight of another to distract oneself from their own heightened feelings. [break][break]
"Thank you, Yugiri, for coming to my aid and helping me search for my daughter. I know she has to be here somewhere--I just know it," Ifalna spoke softly. Call it a mother's intuition? Or the fact that she knew Aerith's presence down to her very bones. Her little girl had been her sole reason for living these last seven years and that would not change now.
