"Got a story for me?"
Violet was used to, by now, her opening question being a big question, but she hadn't quite expected the full torrent of information that began to come from Clive. She quickly scribbled it all down, as sensibly as she could. Some of it, she made educated guesses on. 'First Shield' clearly was some kind of bodyguard, right? Presumably, the head bodyguard, for his little brother, who was a Dominant (kinky word...) of an 'Eikon'. Which appeared to share a name with summon materia from her world. Did Clive's people worship materia?
As he went on and spoke about 'Bearers' (bearers and dominants? Whoever had named things in that world clearly had some pent up sexual frustration), she made appropriate sympathetic faces, but she felt like Clive had skipped over something, and she paused. "So you were the son of an archduke, and yet, even you were forced into slavery for being able to use magic?" she asked. A world where even royalty wasn't safe from slavery? That was interesting Of course, Gaia had no royalty, but myths of princes and princesses were still common even in Violet's world. Plus she supposed there was the whole Wutai situation. They had a kind of royalty, but they didn't use the same words. And it seemed like they could take over based on who was the best warrior or something? Violet had never quite understood the political situation in Wutai.
And then he spoke about the crystals. Drawing aether from the planet, and killing it. And she realised all of a sudden that Clive's circumstances weren't that different from that of her own world. Different words, different technology, but the same principal had remained.
"You know, my world wasn't that different," Violet said. "On my world, there was... a company. Called Shinra. They built gigantic reactors, huge machines, that drained something we called 'Mako' from the planet. It provided everything for us. Electricity, power, warmth, homes, entertainment. But.... they covered up what it truly was. 'Mako' was being drained from something we called the 'Lifestream', a lot like your... 'aether'. It was the life blood of the planet, where your soul goes-" she paused, 'goes', more like, 'went', if there was no lifestream in Zephron, "...went, when you died. Most of us, me included, had no idea. I used to work for Shinra, in my teenage years, as a media personality. They made me famous, and I didn't ask questions..." she said, a little sadly. "Until a group of what Shinra branded terrorists blew up one of the reactors. I couldn't understand who would do that, or why. Who would cause so much misery and pain. But as I looked into it..." she paused. "I realised the truth. They had attacked the reactors to stop them draining the life blood of our planet. To save us all," she said.
"I think I'm beginning to see why you would try to destroy a crystal..." she admitted. "But please, go on," she gestured for him to continue.

"Got a story for me?"
"Please, call me Violet," Violet said with a gentle wave of her manicured hand, before she smiled at his agreement to the interview. Okay. Well, that was a positive start. Now he had agreed, she just had to see where it went from there. Nodding, she began to follow him to the better spot he had picked. She had to admit, it was probably better than trying to get the story in the cramped quarters. It was interesting that he had such free reign in the headquarters; clearly Celes trusted him. But that was a positive sign, that he wasn't the monster the reports had made him out to be.
She took a seat opposite the fire, and she had to admit, she appreciated the warmth. Shinra might have had its problems, but she definitely missed their heating systems. She pulled out her pink scented paper and pens, and got ready to make notes. She smiled across at Clive. "Okay, so why don't we start with a little about yourself?" she asked. "Why don't you tell me a little about who you are, and the world you came from?"
This was the natural first question for Violet. She liked to ask about people's worlds. Her hope was to find a common thread or link between the people who came there, but if nothing else, she felt that building up a database of worlds people had come from couldn't hurt. After all, she already knew some people came from the same worlds, and she wanted to explore that. Not to mention if someone new turned up and could find one of her articles talking about the more familiar world, well, that could help them adjust too, and assure them that they weren't alone. All positive steps...

"Got a story for me?"
Violet felt her stomach knot a little with guilt as Celes began to tell her how much she didn't like talking about her home. Violet's question hadn't intended any discomfort, but she supposed it made sense, some people would be so homesick it wouldn't be nice thinking about it. But before she could tell Celes it didn't matter, and persuade her to move on, Celes opened up.
And when she did, it seemed like a Dam had broken, because the information that flowed out was incredible. Immediately, Violet's pen started dancing over her pink scented paper as she made notes. The information that was coming out was both fascinating, and more than slightly terrifying. At first, her world didn't sound that different from Violet's own. A mighty Empire who ruled everything? Well, that wasn't that different from Shinra, was it? Okay, so maybe this Empire was more at the forefront about it.
But then she began to speak about the experiments, and Violet paled a little, if that was possible under her heavy, professional make-up. Again, she supposed it wasn't unlike some of the rumours she had heard about Shinra, with their SOLDIER program, but speaking to a survivor of such a thing was horrific. Especially to learn she was one of only three who could use magic in her world at all, and one had gone insane. It didn't sound entirely unlike Sephiroth, although of course, anybody with materia in Violet's world could use magic.
Violet just never wanted to. They were far too big and gaudy as jewellery went. She preferred smaller, more subtle jewels, and besides, what would she do with magic anyway?
The story turned darker. Celes described how she had been a young general. How she had led an invasion into a place named the 'free city'. Violet was no expert, but she guessed if you were the invaders of a place called the 'free city', you were the bad guys. But then again, she had been pro-Shinra most of her life. And she hadn't been tortured and forced. Just give her a comfortable life and a spotlight and she had jumped as high as Shinra wanted. So could she really fault Celes as she spoke?
And besides, it was easy to see the guilt dancing across her face. The shame. Celes wasn't proud of this. She had been a child soldier. So of course she wasn't. She was ashamed, and she was upset, and Violet looked at her, her heart breaking slightly for this poor woman who had been through so much. She paused, and gave a small smile.
"Of course, take your time," she instructed. Then she looked down at her notes thoughtfully, pausing.
She took a moment, and tore the page free, crumpling it up.
"Look, don't worry. I can see how painful that was, and I'm not here to spread those stories or hurt you," she said. "People don't need to know about that. We can just... carry on from what happened afterwards," she explained. She hoped the story got better. Or at least, something Celes felt that she could share. Maybe she wasn't doing her journalistic due diligence doing that, but she wasn't sure that it mattered. Who here could judge her anyway? And besides, protecting the source was always important, right?
"When you're ready, we can skip to something easier," she said gently.

"Got a story for me?"
Violet wasn't really sure what she had expected, from the information she had gathered, perhaps some kind of blood covered muscle bound barbarian in a leather thong or something, but she certainly didn't expect the polite, charming and well spoken man who opened the door. And while Violet prided herself on being a good judge of character, she was too caught up in the charm, rugged good looks and polite way he spoke to catch any of his discomfort.
Plus the idea that anybody would be uncomfortable about her was largely unthinkable.
She put on her best journalistic smile, the one that had gotten her on TV back in her Shinra days, and decided to present her case. "Well, Clive - I can call you that, right?" she asked, and then continued. "I'm writing articles on people who have come from other worlds. Like yourself. But I'm trying to present us in... a new light. A better light," she explained. And then she took a deep breath.
"Look, I don't need to tell you, right now, you're the poster boy for the 'these off-worlders are bad news' brigade, right?" she said with a slightly sympathetic smile. "Well, I'm hoping, if you answer some of my questions, we can change that. I'm sure you didn't just randomly show up wanting to cut up the city. I'm sure there was a reason for it. And getting people to understand that reason will hopefully change things for the better. For you, and for all of us off-worlders," she finished.
And then she smiled.
"Soooo, what do you say? Interview?" she asked chirpily, hoping her sales pitch won him over.

"Got a story for me?"
Violet had many flaws. Even she knew that. She was prissy, she could be snobby, she was vain, she was physically weak and incapable, she had the combat skills of a wet paper bag, and she thought 'tactics' were something to come up with when a store had a sale on and you just had to get to the cut price purses first. But, if there was one thing she was pretty good at, even at her young age, it was reading people's emotions. And so, she saw in Celes the blind terror that came with her being a reporter.
She wasn't going to lie, there was the teensiest tiniest thrill to it. Celes was, after all, the head of a super tough mercenary team, and here she was, acting like she was scared of Violet! Oh, sure, she knew it wasn't physically scared, and Celes could crush her with her pinkie in a fight, but there was still something a little exciting about it.
It was a feeling she squashed down under her professionalism, and she offered Celes a gentle smile. She had noticed the rough hands. So very, very unlike her own. Maybe she could recommend Celes some moisturiser when this was all over.
She looked at the available seats. A broken sofa. A dirty chair. She opted for the chair, doing her best to maintain professionalism and not make a face as she sat down, trying not to wince at the possibly dog hair currently sticking itself to her skirt. It wasn't that she didn't like animals; it was just that she thought animals should be admired from afar. Where they couldn't get fur or slobber on you. Still, she did her best to make it look like she wasn't TOO uncomfortable with the seat. But she was held in a very poised position, clearly not sitting back.
"Honestly, these things take as long as you want. You can tell me as little, or as much, as you feel comfortable. Like I said, there's no pressure. It's not an interrogation. It's just a chat. And if you mention anything you don't want me to print, you just tell me, yeah?" she smiled her sweetest smile.
"Well, why don't we start off with a little about where you're from. What your homeworld was like and what you did there. Were you always a mercenary? What was it like? More or less advanced than Torensten? We have a real mix here. My world was a lot more advanced, and by the Ancients do I miss cellphones..." Violet sighed longingly.

"Got a story for me?"
Violet hadn't actually meant that there were, perhaps, auras he couldn't see. She had meant it more literally. That he had thought he understood everything when perhaps he didn't. But however he took it, it seemed he was at least willing to consider her point. Which was a start.
And not bad for her ol' ego, either, given she had basically just schooled a God on wisdom. Not bad for a teenager from Midgar.
"Y'know, I've interviewed quite a few people, and I always find, the most ignorant ones are the ones who think they know everything," Violet pointed out. "You gotta be willing to accept there might be more than you know to actually learn, so, uh, good start," she nodded. Okay, maybe she was trying to play up the whole 'teenage wisdom' thing a bit, but she couldn't resist.
"Thanks, I try," she smiled when he told her he DID think she looked smart. That was reassuring. Especially if he could see her 'soul'. You could try and dress smart, act like you were intelligent, but at the end of the day, it was nice to hear that someone who could see who you were on the inside thought the same. Especially since Violet sometimes had her own doubts about herself. Oh, she tried, but sometimes she felt like an inexperienced, spoiled ditz. It was nice to hear that she wasn't.
She smiled as he began to think about using his music, because it seemed obvious. To hear a musician wonder how to express himself was kinda ironic, she thought, but luckily he landed on the obvious answer soon enough. "No, no, keep talking, I think it's cute, hearing you figure it out," she giggled softly. "Writing him a song sounds like a great idea. I mean, of all the people with the talent to express how you truly feel, you're a musician, right? You were basically born for this," she pointed out. In the same way she supposed she was a writer, so she was probably born to write how she felt about someone... one day. But somehow that seemed less romantic than a song. Especially a song from an ancient God...

"Got a story for me?"
Violet cocked her head slightly and smirked. "You're a boy. Of course you're used to thinking you're right. Most boys are," she teased. She wasn't quite being literal. No, she had meant 'all-knowing' in the sense that he could detect emotions and was apparently thousands of years old, but she couldn't resist the playful tease. "Of course, they're usually wrong, but hey, they don't listen to us," she shrugged. Obviously meaning 'girls'. At least in Violet's experience, after all.
She was slightly surprised however that he ended up agreeing with her. Not because she thought she was wrong, but because in her experience, older men did not listen to the teenage girl and her opinions on things. However, she had felt confident in what she was talking about, and he seemed to realise it too, as he started speaking about the range of feelings he had. She had lost slight track of who the mysterious third person was, but she didn't need that to either write about or understand love across the aeons.
"See, being in 'limbo between life or death'," she practically said the quotation marks out loud given she didn't really understand what they meant, "for most of time and he still waited for you, that's a pretty big sign. Maybe there's more to life than what even you can see," she suggested. She did however pause a little, and frown when he suggested it was something 'deeper' than love. "I'm not sure there is anything deeper than love. Love is the ultimate emotion we feel for each other. It doesn't mean it's just romantic or friendly or sexual, it's not just like, lust, or whatever. But love... it's complicated and weird and can come in loads of forms, but I also think it's pretty infinite. Love is a thing that can't easily be defined. Even if you've got super cool aura vision or whatever you call it," she said, waving a vague hand and deciding not to check her notebook for the terminology she had scribbled down earlier.
She laughed a little when he called her a 'teenage journalist', and she had to admit, she hadn't expected to be able to change his mind. He was basically a God, and she was a snobby kid from upper class Midgar. She knew that she was. She tried to be understanding, but at the end of the day, she knew she was posh and spoiled. She hadn't expected to be get through to him, and it made her realise that perhaps she really did understand more about people than she thought. Maybe she was actually good at her job.
"Hey, I'm smarter than I look," she teased when he said that. "And don't say that's not hard!" she added quickly, knowing the impression her blonde hair created. She smiled when he said he couldn't promise, but he'd try. "That's good. You should try. For you, not for me! It doesn't affect me," she reminded him with a smile.

"Got a story for me?"
Violet noted that he didn't go into too much further detail with her read that the version of events he had presented; well, it was all down to humans being awful. She was no stranger to that, really. Midgar was a mess because of Shinra. She was pretty certain of that these days. And even if it wasn't Shinra, it was AVALANCHE. It was humans killing humans and causing problems. They even said the meteor was summoned by Sephiroth, who was a human (wasn't he?). Her world had been dying because of humans being idiots. It sounded like Hythlodaeus's was the same.
Luckily, the conversation moved on, to a topic she was more comfortable with. That was, who loved who. And he began to explain that he could literally 'see' love in people. Which immediately made Violet think about all the embarrassing crushes she had, which made her feel slightly sheepish. She listened to what he said, but she still wasn't sure she entirely agreed.
"Do you ever think that because you can see everything, sometimes, you might misread what you see?" she suggested. "Because, look, I get it. You're an ancient all knowing being who can read emotions and I'm like, eighteen and some rich spoiled brat from Upper Plate One," she said, because she forgot for a moment that he'd have no idea what that meant. "But trust me, even I know love is complicated. There are loads of different kinds of love, but it's all still love. Like, how I felt for that boy back in high school? Totally different from say, how I feel for Genesis, who, oh my god is hot," she explained. "But a celebrity crush and love are different. And the love for one person might be different from love for another person. Just because he doesn't look like you expect love to look doesn't mean it's not love. I mean, have you tried talking about it?" she suggested.
She realised that this was slightly outside her remit as a journalist, but she couldn't help herself. Seeing romance in jeopardy was far more important than a story, right? Plus, if it all worked out, she could have both!
"I mean, I dunno, staying by your side after all this time, it sounds like a kind of love to me," she said. "Maybe not the same love as you have, but love none the less. Friends are pretty easy to come by. He could go find somebody else. But he chose you. Despite knowing how you feel about him. Doesn't that tell you something?" she asked.

"Got a story for me?"
Violet nodded slightly as he explained the story to her in simpler terms, but she still didn't think he was doing much to really sell this idea to her. She looked at him, with a mixture between sympathy and worry. "I mean, I get it, it's just, it's hard to hear that story, and not come away thinking 'everyone sucks', right?" she said. "I mean, it all started because men made the weapon, right?" she asked. Again, not entirely unlike her own world, when she thought of Shinra and what they did. The SOLDIER program leading to Sephiroth's rampage. Information had been scarce about it, but it had been a matter of record that Sephiroth was now a terrorist, and had attacked Shinra Tower. Or maybe she only knew that because she was in a privileged position with her parents. She never actually had found out how wide spread that news got out.
But she decided not to bring that up right then, as it'd only muddy the issue, and proving her world was just as bad probably wouldn't help her point at all.
"Okay, well, whew, that's a relief," Violet smiled when he confirmed that they couldn't make any more concepts on Zephron. That was for the best. No God-killing planet-destroying monstrosities made by accident any time soon, which was something positive.
He went on to explain how she could have modified her body if she was an 'Ancient', but he couldn't, and neither could she, and it needed 'Aether' anyway. "Uh, yeah, sure, totally normal," she nodded sceptically, because, it was anything but, but she decided not to argue the point too much. He then went on to say that he doubted that Zephron was truly a fractured part of his own world, and she sighed. "Well, there goes another theory up in smoke, I guess," she sighed. And she had thought she had something there. For once, she had thought she had a lead, but it seemed to be another dead end. How could so many people be ripped from their realities and yet not a single one knew why? There had to be a clue somewhere. She just had to FIND it.
He also went on about how no new bodies could be made, and the people in question saved the world by fighting various bad guys, and she just nodded. Right, yeah. Big fight, world saved, that was fine. She wasn't about to report on all of that. She figured it wasn't particularly interesting to the citizens of Torensten. Or to her. She had never been big on action stories, and she felt like she had enough cosmic importance stuff to write about to not worry too much about a later battle.
She laughed a little when he called her question 'curious'. "Hey, you may basically be a god, but you clearly haven't spoken to many teenage journalists," she teased, since to her it was one of the main questions she'd ask. "Far from it for me to tell a guy who's 'aeons' old anything, but I'm pretty sure platonic besties don't usually sit together and watch colours swirl in silence, just to enjoy each other's company. Plus, that whole, playing tricks on each other thing? Sounds like a major crush to me. And besides, it's been Aeons! People's feelings can change. There was this boy in school who I always bickered with. He kept calling me a spoiled princess and prissy and complain about how much perfume I wear and stuff, and god, I HATED him for it. Then, one day, my friend tells me it's 'cause he has a crush on me. And I'm all like, 'ew, no way', but over the year the idea of dating him kinda, sat in my head, and by the time that school year was up, I was totally into him," she explained. And then she paused. "Of course, by that point he'd moved on and was shacking up with my OTHER best friend but y'know, the point is, feelings can change over time. How'd you know he still doesn't feel anything?" she prompted. She might have been looking to solve the greatest cosmic mystery in the universe, but Violet could never resist a little love-gossip.

"Got a story for me?"
"I mean, I kinda feel like half the planet dying to stop it blowing up at the hands of some space travelling monster you created is a tiny bit of a reason to fret," Violet couldn't help but say rather sceptically, when he tried to alleviate her fears.
"I mean, listen, I wasn't exactly the brightest spark in school all the time. I know what it's like when you get asked a question on an exam and think it might be better to blow up the universe instead, but that sounds kinda extreme..." she said, unable to avoid the joke. She paused though, processing the information. "Wait. So you guys made this 'Concept' that was powerful enough to destroy your entire world? And then you summoned a God even more powerful to stop it that also could destroy the entire world, so you summoned a THIRD God to fight your second God?" she blinked. Okay, so just because they were Ancients didn't mean they were master strategists it seemed. "Wait, that's not what I was gonna ask. I mean, also, you used to create these 'concepts' right? And one of them nearly blew up the planet? So, like, um, just to check, you're not doing that anymore, right? Like, no more Concepts being made? Riiiight?" she asked, just to double check. She felt like it was an important safety check.
"Oh, is that all?" Violet blinked when he told her that they just had to leave their bodies behind to skip between worlds. "Trust me, if we could do that, I'd go jump to a skinnier body every time I was worried I was putting weight on in my thighs," she said. And then she paused, frowning a little. "Wait. Is that something you can actually do? Jump to another body in another reality? So you could see if there's a way off Zephron?" she asked. If Zephron WAS another reality, then surely Hythlodaeus would be able to tell, if he could do that?
After all, for Violet, and indeed, anybody else stuck there, how would they know one reality from another? What if Gaia was just one of the fractured realities he had mentioned? And now so was Zephron? There was a new thing to check. He said fourteen realities. So if she met people from more than fourteen worlds, that theory got sent out the window.
"Right. So... you have a friend who can make people new bodies?" she asked, again raising an eyebrow. "Because, seriously, I can think of some work I'd like done. A whole new body, custom made to order, that'd be awesome!" And then she paused. "Or possibly really creepy," she added, frowning a little.
And then she frowned more as he explained his 'new old friend'. "Wait, your friend fought Emet-Selch? But I thought Emet-Selch was like, your boss and one of the good guys?" she asked. "No offence, but your world is like, super confusing, but I think I'm starting to get it," she said, looking down at her pink paper and the scribbles all over it.
And then he went on to explain the battle. And Hermes still being alive. And a Goddess being at the end of her life. And a Chosen fighting them? And a Rift and Champions and somehow somebody still being 'fractured'. She just stood there blinking, resisting the temptation to tear out the page and start all over again.
"Okay, um, I'm... I'm just gonna write 'there was a big battle' here and move on, because, that's... that's a lot," she said. Not really due diligence as a journalist, but her head felt like it was spinning. Despite the fact he asked her if there was anything else she wanted to ask. And she was still interested, of course, in how his world worked. In how he seemed to be an immortal God or how he summoned Gods or how they made other Gods or all that stuff. It was confusing as heck, but it felt important.
Just, she needed a break for a moment to figure out what she did know.
So, instead, she just leaned in a little, cupping her chin on the backs of her hands. "Soooooooooo, tell me about Solus...." she asked with a smile.
