[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] Joshua couldn’t contain his laughter at the sight of the young Telamon girl getting angry at the fact that she couldn’t help him with his answers, even if she had wanted to (or not) in this case. “It seems to me that you’ve already given me a solution to my numerous issues in this strange reality, Mid. Thank you.”
Although the Phoenix was thanking her for her one-sided help in this unrealistic situation, his words also had a deeper meaning to it, one he had hoped to tell her at their meeting when everyone was saying their goodbyes to their loved ones, whether it included old or new companions in this diversified group of people standing at the docks while they prayed for their safe return following Ultima’s annihilation. “I trust your words and shall do everything in my power to find everyone else in this world people call Zephon… but just this once, allow me to live my life according to my own principles, a life where I am only known as Joshua and not as the ‘Phoenix of the Rosfield family’ whose title followed me during all of my pitiful life, even after my unfortunate death at Ultima’s lair.”
If there was only one regret Joshua held in the afterlife, it was clearly the fact of trying to live a more normal life in Rosalith without the burden and obligations his new identity imposed on him as soon as he had been born into this world. He had wished to live a modest life while traveling around the world to discover its mythical areas and landscapes that he had only read in books inside his father’s study when he was just a sick child under his mother’s suffocating embrace. Oh how innocent of a person he was back in the day…
The young man lifted his eyes again to look directly into Mid’s blue orbs, holding her gaze like he used to when they first met at the old abandoned house with Akashics’ crawling all around the place in this ghost-like town. He sure did make a fool out of himself in front of Cid’s daughter at this embarrassing reunion between the Cursebreakers and the Rosfield household. “You are a lovely person, Mid, whose beauty can unmatch all of the ladies in Rosaria and beyond. Though, as I’ve once said before, I do not hold any other feelings than that of a brother and his sister in this case. My heart may belong to another person that I have yet to meet in this life, who knows.”
Another chuckle escaped the young Rosfield man's lips. “You have my word. Though Clive might have a hard time believing me being resuscitated again in this life.”
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] Joshua didn’t have to wait long for his drink to arrive, and once he got a grasp over his beverage, he swallowed it all in one single take, feeling his throat burn at the contact of the liquid in his mouth like it was pure ambrosia.
“I might as well take another one…” He mumbled to himself before gesturing to the kind lady that he wanted another drink. “Make it double again, please.” He added, his face still not showing any emotions other than true sorrow and grief, which the bartender may have noticed seeing how she did not make the young Rosfield man pay for his two last drinks. “Thank you, my lady.” The black-haired woman smiled for a simple response and went on to take another order from another customer nearby them.
The younger man, who had quietly taken a seat next to Joshua while he was taking a sip from his first drink, seemed to be quite interested in the Dominant and the reason why he looked so depressed in the first place.
Initially, the Phoenix made himself promise not to interact with the local populace until he knew exactly where and why he was here in this unknown world he called “the black hole.” Yet, upon gulping his second drink as quickly as he did with the first one, he agreed to answer the pirate’s question in the hopes that he would get quiet afterwards for the sake of his own misery.
“... Who would be happy at the fact that everything they’ve known since birth have been lost to the gist of plain old dark magic?” He rhetorically asked Faris, his hand putting down the glass on the stand’s surface as a lump started to form in his throat. The boy man felt vulnerable, and powerless, but more importantly, he felt lost to the point where he didn’t know if he should feel relieved that he was alive again or that he should be worried about his brother, his childhood friend, and the rest of their allies’ fates. He didn’t know exactly what had happened for him to appear into this world, yet he hoped that he was not the only one in the same situation as him.
As he took another sip from a third drink he stole from behind the counter, his eyes went on to stare at the stranger for a couple of seconds before he went on to look back at the bottom of his glass. “Indeed, I have come a long way, but not in the sense you might be asking.” He drank from his liquor once more while taking his sweet time to continue on with his answer. “Truth to be told, I never felt so lost in my life than when I first came here into this world. I got to travel from Provo to Pale Coast, hoping I’d find my answers in this seaside village about my lost brother and our comrades. And yet, I was utterly deceived to be informed that I might be the only one who has survived the enemy’s wrath back in our former world. That is why, I would rather drown my dejection with this divine drink until I find another purpose to this crappy life of mine.”
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] Joshua sighed, then nodded in approval to Mid’s comment. “You’re right… It is only a dream in which both of us are for reasons that I have yet to understand.” The fact that the person in front of him was a mere illusion who replicated the same Telamon girl from real life raised more questions than it did with answers. The young Rosfield boy thought it had been Meteia who tried sending him a message to keep him from thinking of the past and start his life anew without the burden of being the Phoenix's vessel in this unknown world. “Meteia, what exactly are you trying to tell me with this vision…” He mumbled under his breath, his eyes lingering at the sky in search of any sign that could lead him to this final truth.
As Joshua was about to add another comment on this strange situation they were in, Mid “Wait, Mid! That’s not-” He started saying, blushing in embarrassment as to what the young engineer girl was implying with her words. “Why does it always end with a misunderstanding whenever I try to speak with you?” He whispered to himself before clearing his throat in an attempt to keep his cool demeanor in front of her. “If it can reassure you, I only see you like a younger sibling. Additionally, you are not the kind of lady I would fancy if I were to ever date someone in this lifetime.”
The Pheonix’s vessel did not want to elaborate on this topic any longer, and instead diverted their conversation back to the main topic they were discussing just a couple of minutes ago, which was what the hell he was doing here in this place he called 'the black hole.'
“If we both don’t know why you have appeared in my dream, we’re up for a really good start…” He joked in great bitterness, having yet to comprehend the meaning behind all of this if it were to only torture him more about the disappearance of his brother and their friends following the battle against Ultima. “I need to think some more about it.”
While Mid continued with her usual banter, Joshua analyzed each of the clues given to him, whether it was hidden in his surroundings or just a word the other person had said amidst their weird conversation. He examined everything he could possibly see or hear in hopes of finding the answer to his unresolved question.
“Hold on, Mid. What did you say just now?” He suddenly asked the Telamon girl, catching up on the bits of sentences she was throwing at him, such as ‘not the only one’ and ‘ask yourself how and why you got here.’ Everything seemed to bring him back to the very purpose of his existence: finding out the truth, and that's what he intended to do until he would be reunited with his people in the world of Zephon.
“I know exactly what I need to do now.” He stated, lifting his eyes so that his gaze would cross Mid’s angelic face one last time in anticipation of his awakening once the dream would come to an end. “Mid… Thank you for everything.” The man smiled, joy filling his eyes after longing for a goal that would keep him alive in this new reality without his loyal allies by his side. “Please tell my brother to not worry about me, alright?”
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] Joshua continued contemplating the scenery before him for a while, troubled by the fact that he might be back in the Holy Empire of Sanbreque. It had never occurred to him that this place could be a dream, one that he would have liked not to wake up from if that meant seeing Clive and the others alive and safe in this new dimension. Even though he had prayed many times to Meteia for it to happen, it never did, and for the first time in his life, he saw dreams as a crueller torture than reality itself.
As he was about to explore some more of the snow daisies’ field, a familiar voice called out his name, and immediately, he turned himself around to get the better of the person who came to meet him. To his biggest surprise, it was not his brother, nor Jill, nor Dion, nor anybody else he knew from his childhood, that stood before him, but a teenage girl whose child’s face, her long braided blonde hair, and her sparkling blue eyes Joshua could never forget.
“Mid? Is that you?” He asked, taking a closer look at her to make himself sure that he was not hallucinating things again, and once that was confirmed, he sighed in great relief and smiled. “It really is you... But how…? I thought I was the only one who knew of this place.” He cheerfully added, knowing it was he who recommended this place to Clive a long time ago so that he would go on a date with Jill right before their imminent departure to Origin. Who would have thought it’d be their last time together in this lifetime…
Joshua took a step closer to the girl, analyzing each of the words coming out of her mouth to know exactly what was going on in this distorted reality. “I see… So, what you ought to tell me is that the place we are currently in is only the product of my imagination, correct?” He asked, then nodded to her conclusive answer. “Oh, and let us not forget that you were sent in my dream to answer all my questions concerning this strange dimension I have fallen into. That is… quite hard to believe, if I may say. Although, I trust your words that you are telling me the truth despite everything not being real now.” Even if the odds were against him, he had to take a chance and know what had happened to him and the others right after the battle against Ultima.
“Tell me, Mid. Did we win the war back in Valisthea?” He asked her, pausing for a moment to hear her answer before he went on to ask his next question. “What about the others? Did they… Did they survive? Did you survive, Mid?”
Hearing an unknown voice calling to him within his consciousness, the youngest Rosfield man wondered to whom it belonged. It had a hint of familiarity, but it was too far for him to know where it came from. Because of the strangeness of this situation, he had no choice but to open his eyes and search for the person who had spoken to him in his dream, even if it would cause his heart to break if it happened to be someone he knew from his old life.
To his biggest surprise, Joshua did not find himself in the small room he had paid for at the Hero’s Haven less than a week ago. Instead, he was surrounded by a field of perfectly white snow daisies with mountains rising behind him and the sea briefly touching the coast from where he stood far behind. A light breeze arriving from the North softly brushed over his skin as he fought the urge to shed tears by looking at this recognizable place of an older time.
“No, this can’t be… It looks so much like…”
Joshua couldn’t bring himself to say out loud the name of the capital city of Sanbreque, fearing of waking up in this old plain bed he took refuge in last night only to realize that Clive and the others were not with him anymore in this unknown world he still hasn’t come to accept as his ‘new home”.
“Why was I even brought here? I share no links with this place, nor do I accord great importance to this land covered in snow daisies… Ha, perhaps I am becoming crazy after all. Or, at least, enough to confound reality with a mere dream that appears to be the same field where I sent Clive and Jill on a little courtship before the grand battle against Ultima. My brother would be profoundly disappointed in me if he saw how scared I am towards living a life without him and the others by my side like the times of yore…”
[attr=class, punkisavelighttext] “By the Founder… What is this place?”
Upon first arriving in this coastal city, Joshua couldn’t take his eyes off from the beautifulness that emanated from this area. The sand was as white as snow, the water as blue as a turquoise, the trees as green as kale, and the birds as colorful as the rainbow could ever be. Everything from this place resonated with the word marvelous, and the young Rosfield man had a hard time believing that such a place could ever exist in the world of Zephon. Sure, he had seen similar settings to this one back in Valisthea, but it was the first time since his unfortunate death that he could actually lay his eyes on a village that had not been tainted by war till now.
“If only Clive had been here to see this. I am sure he would have loved it…”
The only thought of his older brother made him shiver in uncertainty. Was he still alive? Had he been teleported into this world just like he did to? Or had he lost the war against Ultima? No, this could never happen. If he knew one person who could be as stubborn as him when it came to saving the world on his own, it was the legendary Clive Rosfield. The boy who survived Ifrit’s attack, the marked bearer of Sanbreque, the cursebreaker of Rosaria, the rumored “Cid the Outlaw,” and above everything else, the grand savior of Valisthea.
With that many achievements earned throughout his life, it was most certain that Clive had survived the impossible and was presently looking for a way to be reunited with the others to make sure everyone was alive and well in this new world they would now call “home.”
“I wonder if he has been looking for me… If anyone else did.” He thought to himself before sighing. “Ha, what am I thinking? Of course, they would have long forgotten about me... After all, I was proclaimed dead during our fight against Ultima. There is no way someone would have looked for me after the end result of this battle…”
While Joshua couldn’t stop thinking about his negative thoughts, his feet eventually led him to a resort that rather looked like a hotel than a “Hero’s Haven,” as it was written in big letters above the entrance of the place. The young man didn’t question it and entered the hotel like any other regular visitor would have done, except he kept his cloak on to stay anonymous from everybody else.
He didn't need to ask the reception lady where the bar was in the resort as Joshua simply followed the drunkards back to their hidden tavern, which was quite big in terms of other bars he had visited in the past. Looking around, the lounge didn’t seem hostile to him and that greatly reassured him, knowing he was still trying to adapt to this new culture he was so unfamiliar with.
“Looks like I'll be spending my afternoon here, huh…”
Without further questions, he went on to sit at the counter and ordered the place's strongest liquor to help him better digest his improbable resurrection among the world of the living.

III. HISTORY
“My flames may flicker… But they shall never die!”
Growing up as the Dominant of Pheonix, Joshua never had the freedom of taking decisions for himself. Most of the time, he was maintained at Rosalith castle where his mother, Annabella, could keep an eye on him to preserve him from danger while also keeping him away from the “lower class” people of Rosaria. Of course, he never listened to her and often left the palace in secrecy with the help of Clive and Jill. He would get reprimanded later on for his "risky" actions, but he never stopped doing it as they were the only happy moments in his life that made him feel like a normal kid again.
In the year 859, Joshua attended the Remembrance Ceremony with his father, Archduke Elwin, and other representatives from the Holy Empire of Sanbreque and the Dhalmekian Republic. It was during that same ceremony that he met for the first time Prince Dion Lesage, Dominant of Bahamut, whom he became quite fond of as a "friend." Elwin, could not be more pleased than to see the boys befriending each other at the celebrations, thinking that a new era of peace would be brought for with this next generation of Dominants, but little did he know it was only a facade that would slowly lead to the betrayal of his wife and the end of their alliances less than a year later during the Phoenix Gates events.
Joshua remembered this battle so vividly in his mind that it still haunted him till this day. The moment his father was executed by people whom they thought were their allies, himself being overwhelmed by the grand power of Phoenix, and Clive coming to rescue his little brother despite having no powers to help him control his new ability. Everything had been engraved in his brain like black ink tattooed on his skin. The only thing he could not entirely remember was the moment he was extricated from the debris by people of the Undying soon after the end of the fight.
Due to the shock of his sudden transformation as Phoenix, Joshua remained in a coma for five years during which he was taken care of by various Undying acolytes in Tabor. Upon finally regaining consciousness at their operation base, the young Dominant was acclaimed by all for his unexpected awakening and immediately placed under their protection in case of another attempt on his life. For added safety measures, he was assigned Jote, another member of the Undying, as his attendant to serve and keep an eye on him during his healing phase.
Although he disliked the idea of being taken care of by another person during his recovery, Joshua found himself to be quite interested in the girl who served him as his “assistant” and eventually formed a friendly relationship with her over the time they spent together. Since he was not allowed to participate in field research regarding the events at the Phoenix Gates until he was eighteen, Jote kept him informed of new discoveries they made during their mission, forgetting no detail about the testimonies they had collected from very important witnesses in Rosaria.
As time went by, Joshua ultimately joined the investigations and researched any books he could get his hands on that would help him solve the mystery surrounding Ifrit’s sudden appearance in the kingdom more than three years ago. While he did examine works of another era throughout his free time, he also made time for his sword training, feeling the need to stop relying on others in order to become stronger as a vessel of the legendary Eikon of Fire.
By the age of 20, his investigation took an abrupt turn when it was revealed that his older brother, Clive, survived the events at Phoenix Gates and was currently kept as a marked bearer in the imperial army of Sanbreque. The Undying suspected that the eldest Rosfield boy might be the evil dominant they were looking for, but Joshua denied their allegations and instead demanded that they continue their research on Ifrit to learn more about what was really going on in the world of Valisthea.
It took him almost two years before he was able to make a connection between Ultima (a god-like figure who should have left Clive, Jill, Joshua, and Dion alone >.<) and the mothercrystals, thanks to Moss the Chronicler’s parchments. Joshua believed that by learning more about Ultima and his schemes, he would know how to eliminate him in the best way possible without risking the lives of millions of innocent people. As such, he decided to undertake a long journey across the kingdoms in the company of his servant, Jote, in search of a solution that would permanently eradicate evil from spreading across their lands for good. It was not an easy task, and Joshua knew it, but he continued anyway, knowing that his mission would eventually end in saving the world from the mysterious entity they once called “god.”
Unfortunately for him, he arrived too late and had no choice but to seal this supreme being within himself to protect his brother and long-time friend from certain death at Drake's Head. In doing so, Joshua not only condemned himself to be Ultima's eternal prison, but he also sacrificed his own health and body to protect others from the harm of this evil entity, aware that he may have signed his death warrant. And yet, despite Fate being against him, the young Rosfield man continued his lifelong mission against Ultima in hopes of ending his reign once and for all.
By 878, Joshua was reunited with his old time friend, Prince Dion, after learning of Ultima’s involvement in Sanbreque’s politics. He tried to help him to the best of his capabilities, but even he couldn’t stop the god’s plans due to his weakened state. This ultimately led to a tearful reunion between him, Clive and Jill, who taught him that he was no longer alone in this fight despite the success rate of their mission.
Together, they fought tirelessly against Ultima and her servants across the Valisthean lands and eventually killed the vile deity at the cost of two lives, those of Bahamut and the Phoenix.
Joshua Rosfield's story could have ended there as fate had decided a long time ago... but a certain red star decided otherwise, wanting to give a second chance at life to this unlucky hero of Valisthea.
With memories of his old life and a fresh start in the world of Zephon, will the Phoenix be able to mend his heart and soul according to his own principles? That is for you to discover in rp~
