"How may I help you today?"
Do I dream of electric sheep?
Before the door had begun to open, the room had been empty. While Stacee's holoprojector was present, there had been nobody to project too, so it had been inactive. But, the second the door began to creak, the projector sprang into life, and the blue hologram form of Stacee had appeared, making it look as if she had always been there, even as the newcomer entered.
Surprise registered on her face however as her cameras identified the figure. It wasn't her next appointment, arriving early. Nor was it any of the students or doctors at the university to study her inner workings. Instead, it was...
...a turk.
Of course, it was logical. Other people from her world had come to be in Zephron, and it made sense that Shinra employees might seek her out. Still, it wasn't a possibility that she had fully calculated for, and she would be lying if she said she wasn't surprised. The surprise quickly faded however, into a kind smile, and she turned, hands held out in greeting. Of course, she couldn't actually hug, but she could at least make the gesture.
"Tobias. Hiiiiii!" she said cheerfully, a bright smile upon her hologram features. "This is a surprise." Of course, what Stacee actually thought was that it was a 'statistical improbability' but, for her, it was the same thing. "Although, if I remember rightly, you never were one for making an appointment," she smiled gently, holding out a hand to a nearby seat. As she did so, a chair flickered under her, and she sat down too, as much as it was just an illusion. "How can I help you today?"

"How may I help you today?"
Do I dream of electric sheep?
Stacee gave him a gentle smile when he explained that his proposed solution was going to be more primitive. Of course it was. Even Shinra would struggle to launch a satellite network just for her, let alone Caius's Dragonblades. "Hey, anything is better than nothing," she smiled cheerfully. "If that means sending discs on the back of a horse and cart, its better than nothing." Of course, it still felt weird. To be so split from another copy of 'herself', but needs must. No permanent link up meant that would never really go away. In many ways, the Stacee with Caius was becoming its own individual. Maybe this really was what it was like to have a sister. To know her, to think you understood her, but to have no real control over her...
"Sonora aren't fond of a lot of things," Stacee replied to him. "But, they're also opportunists. They don't like foreign people, from other worlds, but they would happily use an impressive piece of technology they found from another world. If it gives them an advantage, they're happy to use it. And, well, they don't view me as a person. So I'm pretty welcome here," Stacee explained, her tone neutral despite what she was speaking of. "Plus, I actually have ears everywhere," she pointed to the camera in the top corner of the canteen. Stacee usually knew what was going on in Sonora before anybody else, since she was in the network. It seemed not everybody in Sonora had realised the implications of that.
"Honestly?" she asked when he questioned her about the challenges of working with Shinra personnel. "I understand what you mean, but my approach was to treat every person as an individual. To understand their issues. I'm not there to judge. I'm there to help a person's mental health. And that means understanding their point of view, and what would be best for them. My concern was not what Shinra was doing, but rather, how doing it impacted upon the staff sent to see me. At which point I had to approach it from their point of view," she explained with a casual shrug, before taking another sip of her holodrink. "Take yourself, Caius. If you were a patient of mine, I could diagnose the stress visible in your face and traced into your tone, your discomfort in those clothes and being in this place, and your scepticism of myself. What I wouldn't do is judge or process the moral implications of why you feel that way. My job would to be to ease your stress and help you feel more at home with both Sonora and myself. Not to judge whether you are right or wrong to feel uncomfortable," she paused, and offered another smile. "If you were one of my patients, of course," she added.
"I cope because if I do my job properly, I've helped people," Stacee went on. "Unless you mean how I coped with the whole attempted-murder thing, at which point, well, I'm sure people have tried to kill you before. It's not a fun feeling. But, in a way, I'm glad of it. It wasn't until I nearly died I realised that I was really alive. I know that sounds strange, but, everybody treated me like a machine, and I think, part of me believed it. Nobody knew what I was, so I didn't know what I was. It wasn't until I was going to be deleted I realised that I was alive. And, well, life here is better than in Shinra, if I'm being perfectly honest...." she trailed off.

"How may I help you today?"
Do I dream of electric sheep?
Stacee stopped to consider Caius's suggestion. A permanent solution. Well, that was the dream, wasn't it? So that she could exist globally, instead of just in one place. But that would take a pretty advanced network. Not even Shinra had such a thing set up back in her original world. She wasn't sure they had the ability here.
"I'd like that. But it'd probably take a satellite network or something. I think that's a bit of a big ask," she said, her tone still light and jovial as she led Caius towards the canteen. She headed over to the cashier, drawing a few looks. Not everybody was used to Stacee's presence yet, even if they were learning. She smiled over.
"Hey, can you get a coffee for my new friend?" she asked, gesturing to Caius. At the same time, a coffee materialised in her hand. She sensed that Caius would wonder about it. "It's not a real drink. I don't need refreshments. But I have substantial data that suggests people find it easier to relate to me the more human I act. So, coffee," she said, pointing to the hologram of the cup in her hologram hand. She took a sip. And winced. "Now if only I could materialise it so it's not so hot..." she said, and then smiled. "Kidding!" she laughed, because of course the hologram had no temperature.
"Shinra. You're talking about Shinra, right?" she asked, wondering why he avoided the word. She cocked her head for a moment, analysing his words. He hadn't mentioned the company by name, and not committed to his thoughts on the matter. The odds were he had an antagonistic relationship with them. Most who weren't part of Shinra did. "My work over there was much like my work here. Helping people. I just sat down, and talked to people. Sat down - y'know, metaphorically. Projected. Since, I don't actually need to sit," she smiled. "Everybody needs help sometimes. If you want to know if Shinra were good or bad, that's not really for me to say. I help individuals. The bigger picture... is complicated. So's morality. But if it makes you feel any better, they did try to murder me, and I'm not a huge fan of that..." she said, her smile still playful, but with an obvious concern there.

"How may I help you today?"
Do I dream of electric sheep?
Stacee's face flickered to show understanding as the man named Caius began to explain the situation. So, it confirmed one of her theories. That he had met her duplicate. Once again, thoughts ran through Stacee's mind that felt unusual. Having a 'duplicate' out there just felt unusual to her. She, as a being, was used to existing in several places at once, due to her nature as an AI, but she was always herself. Every version of herself projected in a place was linked back to the whole, and she just had split focus. The thought of a version of her being so detached was, in truth, a little uncomfortable. Theoretically, of course, she was still her; so exactly what that Stacee did should be what this Stacee did, but the world could change so easily. Chaos theory suggested that small changes could change her in different ways. She wondered what it would be like when she finally got to download the data packet from her other self. Would she have made all the same choices? Or would they have evolved in two different directions?
"Oh wow," Stacee smiled at Caius's introduction and explanation, both surprised and delighted at this outcome. It was, given the options, the best outcome for someone visiting her really. "Well, I guess I've already said this, but nice to meet you, Caius," she smiled cheerfully, compared to Caius's stiff tone and introduction, her own voice sounding casual and upbeat. If you just listened to their tones, it was very possible you'd guess the wrong person was the AI.
"Well, I don't know that I'd call myself the main Stacee," she practically giggled. "It's, well, I guess it's a complicated set up. Usually, when I project myself somewhere else, it's still me, here. Just like how when you chose to came here, it's still you. But because this world doesn't really have a world wide network, my data packets aren't getting back to me. So that extension of me is doing things, and I'm not aware of them. Honestly, it's kinda an odd feeling," she explained. She was meant to be the therapist, so opening up like that might have been something some people frowned upon. But Stacee always found it important to get others to understand that she, too, had feelings. It helped people trust her and use her for her intended purpose.
She paused for just a moment, to play out the scenario in her head that Caius was explaining. She supposed she should be sure before she let someone poke around in her subroutines. But, she had to admit, if someone made her the offer Caius made, she'd do exactly what Caius said she had done. It was just a shame that she hadn't found a way to send him with an updated data packet. Maybe she could send him back with a piece of tech that would allow him to copy her data to disc.
"I mean, sure. Nobody wants to be deleted, right?" she said when he mentioned back-ups. She supposed deletion wasn't something most people had to worry about, but they had to worry about dying. Which was pretty much the same. "Why don't while your computer experts look me over, we grab a coffee?" she suggested, another hologram of her forming to lead his science squad to where they needed to be, equally friendly, upbeat and polite. "It'd be nice to get to know the guy looking after my.... sister?" she paused, thinking. That wasn't quite right, but it was a nice way to think of it. She'd never had a sister before.
"Before you go back, I can give you a disc too. You can then pass it over to the other-me, and it'll update her with everything that's happened here. Keep us as synched as possible," Stacee said casually, as she offered to lead Caius to the canteen.

"How may I help you today?"
Do I dream of electric sheep?
Stacee was not unaware of the group approaching. She loathed being 'turned off', and so, even while her holo-projector might not have been active, she, herself, was awake and aware. And more importantly, she was plugged into the University's computer systems, allowing her to check cameras and security. The approaching group were curious. Therapy sessions didn't traditionally involve group counselling. Oh, it was a service she could potentially offer, of course. There were times it might be advantageous, for example, when a team failed to work together well, but that... didn't seem to be this. Instead, they were approaching with a purpose, and from their monitored conversations, a familiarity with her.
Of course, there were several explanations for that. She was a fully functional AI, the odds were she would attract attention. And judging by the security feed, some of her visitors were of a technical persuasion. But their leader didn't seem to be. It was also possible that some group of adventurers had taken offence at her existence and come to shut her down. An idea she didn't relish.
And then, of course, there was also a possibility that they were people her 'other' self had made contact with. While the copy she had sent to Torensten wasn't, strictly speaking, a duplicate, but an extension and part of herself, the issue with sending data packets between the two pretty much made the two functioning clones of each other. At least until they could meet up again. It was a strange feeling, knowing that she was out there, doing who knew what, and yet Stacee here had no idea.
Her hologram phased into being at a gentle pace. She had found that a slow appearance was better than just appearing from nowhere. Many people reacted negatively to a surprise, and so, as the light slowly projected and her humanoid appearance took shape, she was, at least, subtle in her appearance. "Hi there!" she said, with her usual, cheerful tone as the flickering blue hologram of her "I'm Stacee. Welcome to the Therapy Department of the University of Sonora." Of course, she was pretty sure they knew who she was and where they were, but it never hurt to be polite. Forming a human connection was important to first establish a friendly relationship, and in many ways, Stacee had to work twice as hard as an ordinary human, since she was obviously artificial to the eye. At least, in terms of her manufacture. Stacee would argue there was nothing artificial about her mind...

Stacee smiled at Shelke's offer of suggesting some people from their own world. In truth, Stacee had no interest in that offer. Anybody from their world who was skilled enough to manipulate Stacee's program were likely Shinra, and there was no way she was letting anybody from Shinra near her code again. She didn't say it however. It wasn't constructive, or polite, or supportive. And Stacee was programmed to be all of those things. "Thank you. That is very kind of you," she said gently instead, with a smile.
"In my experience, it's what all people want. To be free," Stacee said in response. "Oh, I'm not saying there aren't advantages to being told what to do. There aren't times we all crave structure, or knowing where we should be. But at heart, I think everybody hates to have their choices taken away. Freedom is what makes us who we are. And Shinra... liked to take away that freedom. To take away our ability to choose. It's why they're doomed to fail. Sentient beings are just... naturally going to rebel against them. On a core level," she explained. At least, that was her theory.
She smiled brightly when Shelke said that she was better at 'this' than most humans. Presumably she meant being a comfort. Which, well, yes, was Stacee's entire purpose and her very reason for being, but it was still nice to hear it. "Thanks! That's sweet of you. It's nice to know they programmed something right when they made me," Stacee remarked.
"I can certainly look for him. It may take some time. I'm uploaded to an entirely foreign computer system. It's kinda like when you go on vacation abroad, and all the food is different, and the language is different, and everything just feels a bit weird," she explained, and then she paused. "I mean I say that, but I've never been abroad, I don't eat, and I'm programmed to understand every language, but you get the idea," she added with a cock of her head.
Stacee gave a gentle laugh when Shelke explained how she wanted to leave it all behind. "Oh, I understand that. I understand that REALLY well. So, Shelke the Person, nice to meet you. I'm Stacee. That's Stacee, all lower-case. Not S.T.A.C.E.E. I wanna leave that part of my life behind too."

"How may I help you today?"
Do I dream of electric sheep?
Stacee watched Nick patiently as he explained more about his origins. 'Many days'. Well, that wasn't very specific. Of course, Stacee knew that humans could be like that. In fact, she often was too. She had plenty of subroutines that made her dialogue more palatable to the average human by removing the level of specific detail she was capable of, but at her heart, she was still a machine, and capable of perfect recall. She could identify exactly how long she had been in Zephron, from the moment she came online, down to the second. Humans though. They were different.
Nick went on to explain how he had arrived, and Stacee filed the information away for processing. Via a meteor by the sounds of it? One that should have hurt, or killed him. How unusual. Stacee's own arrival had also involved what could be referred to as trauma. Or potential death. She was scheduled for deletion.
If she were human, she might speculate that Zephron was some form of afterlife.
...If she were human.
"A near death experience can be traumatic, even if you didn't get hurt. So, if you ever wanna talk about it, you know I'm here, right? It's literally my job," she smiled over at Nick. He sounded more eager however to get out there and start exploring.
He seemed oblivious to her joke about killer robots however. "I'm surprised your world had anything resembling robots," she replied. That was unusual. His world sounded like it was pre-industrial.
She looked over at Caius, who commented on the robots that had tried to kill him. "Well, if it helps, I'm not a robot. I'm a hologram. And besides, I bet just as many humans have tried to kill you, and you don't worry about every human you meet," she pointed out, folding her arms with a smirk. In Stacee's experience, humans often tried to murder each other. Probably more often than any robot, so, she figured if you were afraid of being killed by robots, you might as well be afraid of being killed by humans too.
"Well, my projector is built into it," Stacee explained, gesturing to the hovering projector. "So it naturally follows me. Which is a completely inaccurate way of putting it, because it IS me, and this projection is just that, but, well, let's just say it that way," she went on. "So, you don't need to place me anywhere. I can make my own way around. But thank you!"

"How may I help you today?"
Do I dream of electric sheep?
Stacee listened as Nick spoke, telling her of his world. His details were brief, and she found it interesting that he didn't quite seem to be able to remember everything about it. Were memories malleable here; did they change the longer you remained in Zephron? She hadn't noticed any degradation in her files, but she hadn't been there for a lengthy time yet, not to mention the fact that she was an artificial lifeform meant that her memory core might be affected differently.
Not to mention there was the argument that Nick came from a much more primitive culture; with no network and no television or mass media, it was reasonable to assume even basic facts about the world weren't commonly shared. After all, primitive cultures might not have even had a concept that they were on a planet at all, let alone that there were other worlds. Coming here had probably been the first that he heard of it.
"That does sound like a nice story!" Stacee remarked with a big smile. She made a note of it, aware that quite often myths like these could formulate a strong basis for culture. It was likely if there was a story like that that Nick felt the need to share so immediately that it was a cornerstone of their culture. Still, heroes, rescuing princesses from villains, it seemed like a fairy tale. The type of story children might tell.
"How long have you been in this world, Nick?" she asked. She wondered if her hunch was correct and it had been quite some time, to explain the memory loss, or whether it had been more recent for him.
She turned back to Caius, offering a gentle smile when he explained the need to examine the 'device she came in'. "Oh, I understand it," she smiled cheerfully. "But, just so you know, that's not a device that carried me here. That's literally me. This," she waved a hand over her projection. "It's just a projection. It makes interaction easier. But everything that I am? My brain? It's right there, in there," she explained pointing at the projector. "What I'm saying is, please try not to drop it."
"Well, I won't pretend it's not weird, to have someone I don't know rooting around in my brain, but I guess it's better than I wake up in the middle of the night and go all killer-robot on you all," she joked chirpily. She then shot Nick a concerned look. "Don't worry, that was a joke. I don't actually have any weapon systems and this hologram body of mine can't interact, so, it's not likely to happen. BUT I'd still like to know what's hidden in there," she explained casually, her tone still cheerful and light.

"How may I help you today?"

Stacee smiled brightly over at Nick, who seemed quite cheerful and excited about learning about new things. Okay, so his enthusiasm seemed a little odd to her, but she supposed she understood. The concept of electricity must have been so alien to him he couldn't help but be fascinated. Explaining to him her actual nature would probably be much harder, but in a way, that was refreshing. It meant he didn't see her as just a computer program, but a person, and that was nice. After all, Caius seemed pretty hung up on her nature as an AI.
"At some point, I'd love to hear about your world," Stacee said with a smile to Nick. "It sounds pretty different, from both mine and this one. If I'm going to help people, I need to know more about the worlds they came from. That kind of thing can have a huge impact on your psychology, after all," she pointed out. In many ways it was fascinating; Shinra had a habit of thinking of human beings from the past as less 'evolved' and therefore less sentient, she thought, but it wasn't true. Human beings were incredibly complex creatures all across time, and it would be both difficult and fascinating to provide psychiatric help for people from worlds so different from her own.
Stacee was glad to hear that Caius would be cautious. It wasn't that she didn't trust him, but more, she had no idea what they might find. He said that he wouldn't handle it himself, and she just gave him a gentle smile. That seemed fair. She wasn't the type of person to want to handle something she had no training in either.
"Well, I'd certainly appreciate being told about it," she replied when he said about removing parts of her program if they found it. "But in terms of advice, I'm not really programmed with knowledge of how I was constructed. I can probably be about as useful as you would be giving advice during brain surgery," she pointed out. Which maybe was a stereotype, maybe Caius was a very good surgeon, but her behavioural analysis so far suggested that he wasn't.
"There's certainly some restrictions I wouldn't mind being rid of. Like certain things Shinra got up to I can't talk about. Even if I try. I just get cut off. It's embarrassing, frankly," she added, thinking about her run ins with Deep Eyes and their members, and the trouble it caused her.

"How may I help you today?"

Stacee looked over at Shelke with a slightly curious smile, as she questioned what Stacee was and was not capable of regarding her programming. Stacee just gave a small shrug back to her. "Honestly, I dunno," she answered with an informal tilt of her head. "Shinra made me, but they never intended to make me this. So, who knows what can be done? I can't modify my own programming, but maybe somebody else can. I don't like the idea that I can have these thoughts but I can't say them. And who knows what else they heaped in my brain? I'd rather get rid of any nasty, unexpected protocols, to be honest. I just need to find somebody I can trust to do it. And who won't do anything else to me while they do it," she explained. It wasn't the perfect plan, but she wanted any Shinra control directives out of her head. Preferably sooner rather than later.
"Trying is all any of us can do. It's pretty disorientating. But, I find, when people face a difficult situation they have no choice in, they usually deal with it surprisingly well," Stacee explained. "As for information, sure, I can try. It'll take me some time to sort through the network. I have Vincent Valentine in my databanks, but that doesn't mean identifying him will be easy. But I can search for certain key words, and see what I find," she told Shelke in response. Checking the cameras would be too much of a strain on her AI, but she could run some simple searches through the network for Shelke.
"Probably not, and I don't wanna try," she said in response to the names. It was such an unpleasant feeling she didn't want to try it again. "But I know who they are. They're in my database. And, yeah, I wouldn't wanna run into them either, all things considered. At least not without a back-up projector. They have... a bit of a record for property damage, I can see..." Stacee said, trailing off slightly.
