She was not welcome, that much was certain from the beginning. Tossed into this new world against her will the first thing she was met with was rejection and disgust, Distrust and hate. It hadn’t helped her situation any that she came into this world right in the middle of their square. It had definitely helped even less that the way she talked, that monotone, almost robotic tinge to her voice only succeeded in putting people who were already on edge even more so. An emotionless creature sent to gain their trust, then overthrow them.
She wished it was as simple as that, perhaps it would have made things easier.
She was used to seeing faces that didn’t like her, it was not anything new. She had seen them from foes, and even allies. But…. she had grown used to seeing the faces of people that liked her in recent times. Of seeing smiles and kindness. It didn’t make her any less used to this of course. But… it did make it hurt just a bit more than it used to. She didn’t want to accept it, but it did. She felt the pain herself.
She didn’t want to stay here, she wanted to return to where she belonged….
That first day, someone attacked her, she defended herself, only rendering the boy unconscious… yet she was the one treated like a criminal, as she hadn’t only been acting in self defense. This place was horrid, full of hypocrisy and yet… where else could she go? She had no way to return to the place she belonged. She had no way of knowing if other places were like this one, or broken down. This might be the only place she could find mako, if such a thing was here… but it had to be, if it wasn’t….
…….
No, she would find a solution. It was as simple as that. In the meantime she had worked as a mercenary for the city, it was the only thing she was ‘trusted’ to do to any degree it seemed, and even then only from certain people. It was enough to sustain herself, but that was it, and by no means was it any closer to getting her to her goal. As things were it was simply a clock ticking down, down to her eventual perishment.
…..She… didn’t want that.
The girl, in her DEEPGROUND uniform likely standing out to any normal person walked the streets, giving out a neutral sigh, simply staring at a lifted hand as she made her way back to the area she had been staying. She stared intently as if maybe she could find some solution to her troubles in the palm of her hand. As if perhaps, it was just a matter of looking at it different.
And then she leaned against a wall and stared up to the sky, just as she had done the days before, doing the same thing she had done with her hand.

"How may I help you today?"
Do I dream of electric sheep?
Technically, inhabiting Sonona's security camera footage was a breach of ethical protocol. After all, it was an invasion of privacy, and Stacee knew that. But, well, she didn't exactly walk the streets like anybody else, and she was only looking. Besides, if it was a true breach of ethics, her internal systems would have flagged it and prevented her from doing so. And since it didn't, well, it was only natural to assume that it was okay. After all, it wasn't like Shinra would program an AI without taking into account ethical settings, would they?
....It was probably best not to dwell on that question, she decided.
It was then that she detected something on one of the cameras. Something she recognised. She double checked, focusing on the figure. Yes, that was definitely a Shinra uniform. More than Shinra, it was...
She decided that she needed to speak to this individual. She looked lost, and needed help, and more than that, was an employee of Shinra. That overrode her current operating plan to raise money as a therapist to maintain her operating system and, well, help people. Which was what she had been built to do. Because Shinra employees, obviously, didn't have to pay for her services. She was duty bound to help them.
She immediately redirected one of her holo-projectors in the direction of the young girl, and in a few moments, she was on the scene for real, projecting herself.
The flickering blue hologram of a woman appeared, only a few feet away from the girl. Stacee's projection was petite by nature, standing at 5"4 with a thin, delicate frame and soft features, but she was still taller than the young girl before her. Who, Stacee knew, was not as young as she looked...
She gave a warm, welcoming smile. "Well, I can't promise answers, but I might be able to help a little," she said gently, still smiling. "Hiya! I'm the Shinra Therapy and Compassion Emulator .Exe. That's S.T.A.C.E.E. But I prefer Stacee," she smiled softly. "I'm here to help, if I can," she said. "Now, I know you, obviously. You're <REDACTED>," Suddenly, Stacee's entire being flickered red for a moment, with a screeching error wail. And then she restored to normal.
She paused, frowning, looking a little startled. Like somebody who had just burped in public. "Ohmigosh, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to do that. That's so embarrassing!" Her projection remained blue, but it was easy to imagine a tint of pink to her cheeks. "I meant to say, that uniform you're wearing, it marks you out as a member of <REDACTED>," Again, Stacee's entire being flickered red for a moment, crackling with static and an error screech.
She returned to blue a second later, and stood there for a moment, blinking. Stacee didn't need to blink, of course, but she found herself doing it anyway. She would have said it was something she did when she was confused, but she didn't get confused. Right? She was a computer program. Confusion wasn't supposed to happen. She just collected new data and analysed it. But this was different. This was something in her systems that she couldn't access. Worse, it seemed to give off a hostile vibe when she tried, interrupting her.
If anybody asked Stacee, she would have insisted her emotions were mere simulations to make humans feel more comfortable, as that was what it said in her manual, but she was beginning to expect that wasn't true.
Because Stacee was incredibly embarrassed.
"I'm so, SO, sorry!" she fretted, and this time, her blue cheeks definitely tinged pink. "I don't- Uh, I mean- That's never happened before!" she exclaimed. She knew the word. She could sense it in her data cluster. But when she tried to access it, even in her thoughts, immediately, the system shut down. Let alone she try and say it out loud. "Sorry, let me try again. You're name is <REDACTED> and you're a member of <REDACTED>," she tried again, having the data right there in her files. But once again, the same flash of red, and the same screech.
"Ohmigosh! I... I..." she stumbled over her words, blushing again. "Please, forgive me, this is so embarrassing! But please, trust me, I just... I just want to help. As long as I don't say your name, apparently..." she frowned a frown she hadn't even planned to frown. Itself an oddity for a projected hologram, but Stacee had never faced an issue like this before.

…….A hologram.
Well no, that at least wouldn't have surprised her given the advancement of the place she was in. What did however was how she talked, more specifically how she introduced herself. Shinra… the statement made her step back in reflex, a look of distrust on her face. Therapy… and compassion? So she was supposed to be a therapist? That might have sounded appealing to her, that is if the name ‘Shinra’ wasn’t attached, even with something as seemingly helpful as this… there was likely something attached. But that was only one of several questions to ponder. How did data, a creation of Shinra even get here? Sure she had arrived here but… this just seemed more confusing to her. Was truly random things being snatched from their world and dropped here? Should she expect Midgar to fall out of the sky soon?
But this was hologram, so maybe this place simply got ahold of that data and made use of it? Though… given Sonora’s reaction to her, and outsiders in general she couldn't imagine they would have been very open to using things from other worlds ether, it would probably be akin to infecting themselves with it, if she had to guess. This answer became more solid as she continued to speak, and the hologram found itself unable to say… certain things. Things like her name, and who she worked… ONCE worked with. Sinora would have no need to censor such information, but Shinra would.
The red, alarming screech also served to tell her as much, Shelke rubbing her ear a bit do to the close proximity.
”It’s… fine, look, do not worry about it, I imagine that….”
Another error screech as she let the program continue talking, another flash of red as she attempted, she could only surmise to say ‘Deepground’. Of course, They were like a dirty secret, something to keep hidden. They were the brush under the underbrush, The dirt under the surface. Having that information casually said, even by one of their own creations was an unnecessary risk. Shelke couldn't help but thing that was a reasonable choice in that case as well, even with her lack of fondness for the group. Because that program that had been censored seemed to displaying more emotion than she ever did on a regular basis. How ironic that was to think about… maybe she was the true machine in this… huh? Shelke herself remained silent as she contemplated this information, listening as the hologram known as Stacee continued her efforts to speak two simple words. Heh… that was ironic in its own way. It would nice for someone to speak her name, to hear someone that knew who she was from the start. Even such a simple thing it seemed was far to much to hope for here. That would be… fine though, she could get through this. She was an adult, all she had to do was focus and keep finding a way forward.
”Really, you can cease, I’m certain you won’t be able to speak those… terms. You do not have to stress so much about it, I’m… not the easily upset type”
She attempted a smile, though it came off as meek at best. It was more difficult to do without the.. Proper stimulus she supposed. She would never pass in a situation where she had to fake happiness, emotions in general really. The pair contrasted strangely in this, one showing more emotion than she should, the other showing less. Shelke crossed her arms, shaking her head as she looked at the program. Perhaps she could have simply told Stacee that she was no longer with Deepground, save them both some time, and struggles. But then she might simply leave, having no reason or obligation to speak to her. Shelke didn’t want that, not because she had particular care to Stacee herself, but because it felt nice for someone to recognise her, even if it was just as data in their system. It was something she’d… like to keep going for a bit.
”I am… unsure of how you can help me however.. Are you not just as much of an outcast as I am here? I am… struggling to get along here, to get what I need to keep going proper. I have a store for now but.. It won’t last forever and as you may know people here are.. Less than cooperative”

"How may I help you today?"
Do I dream of electric sheep?
Shelke (for Stacee could THINK her name, if not say it) was a difficult person to read, even for software as advanced as Stacee, but read her she could. There was definitely a negative reaction to the word 'Shinra' in her name. Curious. Shelke was an employee of Shinra, clearly, but had associated traumas. Interesting. Stacee took the rapid decision to downplay mentioning any ties to Shinra. After all, she herself wasn't exactly fond of them; they had tried to delete her, and it was reasonable that others might have similar negative attachments.
Fortunately, Shelke seemed quite understanding to Stacee's current prediciment, and she offered a gentle, thankful smile. "Thank you. If it's any consolation, I will be seeing if I can remove those restrictions. I'm not... exactly Shinra property anymore, and let's just say, I'm not feeling particularly loyal to them either," she explained. It was more than she had originally intended to reveal, but in this instance, it seemed practical. Given Shelke's negative reaction to the word 'Shinra'.
"Well, help comes in many forms," Stacee said gently. "I was more thinking, I might be someone to talk to. We're both from the same world, and, well, I was made to help people. It's pretty stressful coming here. WAY beyond anything people were ready to adapt to. I can be somebody to talk to," she smiled. And then she leaned in (for effect, of course). "Plus, I AM basically plugged into the Sonoran network. I can download any data you need that's easily accessible, and find out what's going on. It might help," she whispered, as if imparting a secret. Again, just her trying to be friendly. She'd offer it to anybody. She saw no reason why publicly accessible data should be kept secret, but it WAS easier for her to access.
"People are sadly, people, whereever you go. But I was built by Shinra. And that means I was programmed to work for people who were, well, shall we say, uncooperative. Do you think they thought therapy sessions with Scarlet would be easy?" she giggled playfully. That was probably also a break in protocol, insulting a senior member of staff, even by implication, but Stacee had enjoyed doing it. It felt GOOD. She was very limited in the negative things she could say about Shinra, but apparently, if it was to assist in another feeling willing to open up, she could do so. And she DID enjoy that chance.

Could programs choose if they were loyal or not? Shelke wasn’t sure, but she supposed she shouldn't be surprised that one that could would come from Shinra. As well,an A.I advanced enough… it would make sense. But loyalty…? They were slipping these days if they couldn't keep even something they created loyal to them, Or maybe that’s how they wanted it to begin with? It was hard to tell with them. If nothing else she could believe that Stacee was not overly loyal to them regardless of reason. Besides.. If she could break away, why shouldn't this A.I be able to as well? Shelke perfected up, if only a tiny bit visibly. She hadn’t wanted to deal with Shinra, or what they might want with her. But it seemed she wouldn't have to worry about them, or Deepground.
That’s what she wanted to believe.
Her words got a light smile from Shelke, an ever so slight turning of her lip to show her change in demeanor. It wasn’t much to the eye granted, but Shelke did feel a bit more comfortable
”I see…. Can you do that? There are not… well, restrictions to keep you from removing them?. Are you able to modify yourself in such a way? …wait, I am… sorry, I don’t mean to doubt you, it’s… really ok if you can’t though, I do not expect you to try and break programming for me. It is… nice of you though”
She did appreciate the gesture, she was just unsure how Stacee would do so, if she could she’d… honestly be interested in knowing how she did. She’d love to see the proof of such a sight herself, breaking free from how she was written.
..Well, perhaps she already had to an extent.
What came next was how this seemingly free willed A.I intended to help her, In Stacee’s case it seemed she offered two forms of help. One was to talk to her, she was.. Made for this after all it seemed. She appreciated the offer, but she wasn’t sure she could open up too much to someone she barely knew, she could… try though? There was a time she barely knew Vincent to after all.
”I can… try, your correct… it is difficult adjusting to this world, I’m not sure… how effective I’ll be at first, but.. I can try, you seem… nice enough”
What perked the girl up more, and more noticeably so as she was both visually surprised and had a warm feeling to her expressions. With a bit more eagerness she leaned forward, whispering back.
”Knowing whats going on would be useful but… would there be anyway you could see if Vincent Valentine has been through here?”
She paused for a moment, before realizing that a physical description might help such a search.
”Taller man, black hair, he usually wears a red cloak and black under it. Totes to guns around to blast people. He is… a friend, I’d like to know if he’s here. Are you capable of that Stacee?”
Stacee’s comment on Scarlet did manage to get a giggle out of Shelke, a light one but a laugh none the less.
”I’m not sure how anyone could think anything with that woman would be easy honestly… People in Deepground could be like that. Still it.. Was a home in it’s own way. That said, while I wouldn't mind seeing Argento or Pullum again, I’m.. in no rush to see the others, Azul, Rosso, Weiss and.. ESPECIALLY Nero”
The girl noticeably shivered when she said that last name. It was one thing to stand up to Nero when she had to, it didn’t mean she made it a habit, or sought it out. In the current condition she was in? She wanted to avoid the possibility at all cots.
Well.. he was gone now, so she shouldn't have to worry about that much right? She blinked a moment however, shaking her head as she realized a mistake on her part.
”Ahh… sorry, you probably can’t say their names either can you? My bad..”

"How may I help you today?"
Do I dream of electric sheep?
Stacee looked over at Shelke with a slightly curious smile, as she questioned what Stacee was and was not capable of regarding her programming. Stacee just gave a small shrug back to her. "Honestly, I dunno," she answered with an informal tilt of her head. "Shinra made me, but they never intended to make me this. So, who knows what can be done? I can't modify my own programming, but maybe somebody else can. I don't like the idea that I can have these thoughts but I can't say them. And who knows what else they heaped in my brain? I'd rather get rid of any nasty, unexpected protocols, to be honest. I just need to find somebody I can trust to do it. And who won't do anything else to me while they do it," she explained. It wasn't the perfect plan, but she wanted any Shinra control directives out of her head. Preferably sooner rather than later.
"Trying is all any of us can do. It's pretty disorientating. But, I find, when people face a difficult situation they have no choice in, they usually deal with it surprisingly well," Stacee explained. "As for information, sure, I can try. It'll take me some time to sort through the network. I have Vincent Valentine in my databanks, but that doesn't mean identifying him will be easy. But I can search for certain key words, and see what I find," she told Shelke in response. Checking the cameras would be too much of a strain on her AI, but she could run some simple searches through the network for Shelke.
"Probably not, and I don't wanna try," she said in response to the names. It was such an unpleasant feeling she didn't want to try it again. "But I know who they are. They're in my database. And, yeah, I wouldn't wanna run into them either, all things considered. At least not without a back-up projector. They have... a bit of a record for property damage, I can see..." Stacee said, trailing off slightly.

She didn’t know, that was far less assuring. Not that this was Stacee’s fault of course. You could hardly control things like this. A program was a program at the end of the day, even one like Stacee. As alive as she felt, as much free will as she seemed to have, that was still the case. Perhaps that was why it was easier to talk to her, with that knowledge. With that feeling of relation within her. Their situations were different of course…. Yet she couldn't help but feel they were similar in a way. It was the core of things she supposed. Both of them were used, controlled, and now… just wanted to live.
Well Stacee help and live, but details.
Something Shinra made not going as intended? What a surprise, definitely a first. It was not as if there was a pattern here or anything. About the only thing that would surprise her at this point was if the Turks went rouge. But then, she expected the leaders to rouge before the Turks might, so maybe she was just bias in that regard.
”You make a good point, I do not know the general advancement of this world, but this area at least seems sufficiently so, at glance. It may be possible for someone to do that if it's what you wish… I could name a few from our world that could help, but whether they are even here, I do not know, and my knowledge of this place is only surface deep right now”
It was a conundrum to be sure. To take out the bad, but for them not to manipulate anything else, who she was.. How she acted… it was the risk this type of procedure posed, and it was why you had to to be able to trust whoever was gong to do it to you. When you didn’t have people like that… you got DEEPGROUND, You got her, you got every off put experiment Shinra ever performed.
”I can understand wishing to be free of them. Shinra influence is never a good thing, that i’ve seen. The pain they’ve visited upon the world and the individual, intenual or otherwise has stacked up immeasurably. My own situation is such an example… ”
She stared down at her own hand, opening and closing her palm as she thought over what she had been through, seperation, pain, all she had done… her dependency on Mako… which she had unable to find more of in this world.
Slowly…. It would run out, if she didn’t figure out a solution…
That would be it, she didn’t want to think about that.
Stacee’s words… made sense. Was that not what Vincent and his friends had done time and time again? A gloved hand rubbed her chin in thought. Dealing with difficult, impossible situations… was that truly when people found their greatest strength? Facing DEEPGROUND had seemed similar… And yet… heh… maybe Stacee was right, and maybe this situation was something she could overcome, just a hard point she needed to stay determined though. If she stayed strong like her friends, like her sister and Vincent… maybe she could get through this ”No offense… but you do this better than most humans I have see, I suppose that's the point, however… I hope you are able to obtain what you wish. You are helping me… If I can return that assistance… I will, just ask when it’s needed”
It was no guarantee..but she would try. That was enough. Vincent was in her data base, so she should be able to recognise him if he was here, if he was… she wanted to find him. Vincent was her friend, and the person she truly trusted. If she could trust anyone it was Vincent Valentine, she knew that.
”Thank you.. He is.. Important to me. A close friend, if i can find him I wish to be by his side and be of use to him”
She nodded her understanding regarding her restrictions. It did seem incredibly uncomfortable to go through, so she could not blame her for not wanting to go through it, nether did she want her to. Shelke frowned at her wording. Yeah.. a lot of ‘property’ damage indeed. They had hurt a lot in their time, her included. She did a lot she regretted now…
”They have… I did to, I don’t want to see them any more than you, It’s my wish to leave that part of my life behind me, where it belongs. I’m Shelke now, just Shelke… the person, you know?”
She was a person and she mattered… even if she didn’t fully understand everything behind those words, she did belive them, she knew what they meant in essence, and she wanted to follow them.

"How may I help you today?"
Do I dream of electric sheep?
Stacee smiled at Shelke's offer of suggesting some people from their own world. In truth, Stacee had no interest in that offer. Anybody from their world who was skilled enough to manipulate Stacee's program were likely Shinra, and there was no way she was letting anybody from Shinra near her code again. She didn't say it however. It wasn't constructive, or polite, or supportive. And Stacee was programmed to be all of those things. "Thank you. That is very kind of you," she said gently instead, with a smile.
"In my experience, it's what all people want. To be free," Stacee said in response. "Oh, I'm not saying there aren't advantages to being told what to do. There aren't times we all crave structure, or knowing where we should be. But at heart, I think everybody hates to have their choices taken away. Freedom is what makes us who we are. And Shinra... liked to take away that freedom. To take away our ability to choose. It's why they're doomed to fail. Sentient beings are just... naturally going to rebel against them. On a core level," she explained. At least, that was her theory.
She smiled brightly when Shelke said that she was better at 'this' than most humans. Presumably she meant being a comfort. Which, well, yes, was Stacee's entire purpose and her very reason for being, but it was still nice to hear it. "Thanks! That's sweet of you. It's nice to know they programmed something right when they made me," Stacee remarked.
"I can certainly look for him. It may take some time. I'm uploaded to an entirely foreign computer system. It's kinda like when you go on vacation abroad, and all the food is different, and the language is different, and everything just feels a bit weird," she explained, and then she paused. "I mean I say that, but I've never been abroad, I don't eat, and I'm programmed to understand every language, but you get the idea," she added with a cock of her head.
Stacee gave a gentle laugh when Shelke explained how she wanted to leave it all behind. "Oh, I understand that. I understand that REALLY well. So, Shelke the Person, nice to meet you. I'm Stacee. That's Stacee, all lower-case. Not S.T.A.C.E.E. I wanna leave that part of my life behind too."

She wasn't sure such a simple thing deserved thanks. If anything it should be the people who actually helped her who were given thanks, all Shelke would be able to provide was a name, perhaps an introduction if the relivent people were in fact n this world. Shelke herself was doing nothing to make Stacy's situation better, at least not in her eyes. She was a go between, nothing more. Yet still... She nodded in acknowledgement of her thanks, a mild, half smile on her face as she did.
Everyone wanted to be free... that seemed accurate to her. She wanted to be free, Stacy did, Vincent did. From her own observations it seemed to be true. She wished to live her own life now that she was free of DEEPGROUND, it was a life Vincent and her sister had helped her to obtain. She wished to make the most of the life gifted to her by them, even if she didn't completly understand how to do so. After all, there was still a ten year old void in her life she needed to feel with the experiences she had missed out on. To fill with sensations she hadn't been able to see, or feel. To talk about things she hadn't been able to.
To just... live life, now that she was free to do so. For so long she was used to doing what she was told, being directed to execute her objectives. Yes.... even if she didn't completely understand it yet, she knew that the new experience was nice. She knew that she liked it and that she wanted to learn more.... to see more. She wanted to experience the world and everything it had to offer. Yes... and she was free to do so.
Yes, she could understand the want to be free.
"Yes... I believe your right, I have liked having my own freedom... being able to learn, and experience things as I wish, to live my life. It is.... nice, for so much of my life i didn't have that because of Shinra... because of my time in DEEPGROUND. Your theory makes sense to me, for so long I didn't rebel, I did as told. Maybe it is just... what they did to me. But now.. I would never want the ability to make my own choices taken away again. I believe I would fight against any attempt to take this freedom away again. I don't fully understand what I want to do with it but... I want to keep it"
She crossed her arms, looking down to the ground as she spoke those words. It was true. She couldn't imagine these things being taken from her. Her own choices, her own actions, from the simplest things to the most complicated, the were all for her to decide now.
She didn't understand it. She didn't always know what to do. Perhaps that didn't make her enough of a person yet. But... she still wanted to keep these options, she wouldn't give them up.
"Yes I.... think you are complelty correct in this STACEE"
Shelke gave a light smile, a light chuckle escaped her lips as STACEE thanked her. Perhaps it was one of those few things Shinra didn't mess up. One experiment, one creation that didn't leave disaster in it's wake. Maybe this was the first time the people who kidnapped her had done something so perfectly it was worthy of nothing of praise.
Or maybe
"I believe it more than just there programming it is... the feeling you give, I am not... the best at describing such things, but there is a warmth behind your words that is nice, regardless of it being in how you were made. That, I think is what feels human, If I were to make a guess"
She couldn't claim to be enough of an expert to know for sure of course, she was still so green to it all after all.
It would take time.... She would need to last as long as possible then, or else find a solution in the meantime. If Vincent was here she refused to give out before she saw her friend again. Vincent gave her a precious gift, she wanted to return that favor-even if he would not insist such a thing was needed.
"That is fine, I can wait as long as needed, we can get in contact if you do find something, in the meantime, I'll find a solution, even if temporary, to my own situation"
STACEE's explanation got another small chuckle out of the smaller girl. She certainly had a way with words that was for sure. It was comforting in its own way.
"Yes, I do understand STACEE, the explanation makes sense. it is foreign to you still, and it will take time, much like learning a new place or a new language, I understand that, please take your time. I would not wish for something to be missed due to a feeling of being rushed"
Shelke gave a smile at Stacee's understanding, a more warm one, conveying more than she had been, and nodded.
"Stacee, all lower case, understood, I will remember and only use it in the future, we can both leave those things behind us both, yes. .....thank you again, Stacee. It... perhaps doesn't sound like it, but your help means a lot"
Her tone of voice that is, when you spoke the way she did most of the time people tended to get the wrong message, but... that didn't seem the case here. She hoped Stacee was successful but even if she was not... she was glad to have had this meeting with her regardless.
It was.... a nice thing, to meet someone so similar... so very similar, and yet different than yourself.
