The comforting words from her Auntie over being a healer helped Garnet feel a little better. It was true that she spent most of her time on her journey surrounded by warriors. The only other mages had been children, and there had definitely been a sense that at times she felt a little embarrassed by her talents. She was as strong as the six year old girl when it came to physical combat. As capable of battling as the nine year old boy. She was, although still young, an adult, but could never keep up or compete with the likes of Zidane, Freya, Steiner, or even Quina. But it was true that none of them could heal like she did. "Indeed, Auntie," she smiled gently. "Plus, I can also summon a thunder god. Even swashbucklers think twice before that," she added, her tone teasing. It was rare that Garnet made light of her summoning abilities. Too many painful memories, and too much of knowing her powers had been used to inflict pain by those in positions of power. Kuja. Her Mom. Alexandria still wore the battle scars from Bahamut's attack. Lindblum was still damaged by Atmos. And Cleyra? Well, Cleyra was gone forever. She felt a little guilty as soon as she said it, because it wasn't a matter to joke about. But still, it WAS part of her. She might not have been physically the strongest, and she would always be coddled royalty, learning about the world with wide eyes, but she was capable in her own way. And it was a way many people could not match.
Hilda seemed to assume that Garnet wasn't interesting in learning about how to make potions, which perhaps had been true in the immediate sense. It seemed like a broad topic, and something she knew nothing about, and when she pictured her mixing various liquids in glass beakers the image of something immediately exploding in her face sprang to mind. But she also didn't particularly like being told that she couldn't do something. It wasn't uncommon for somebody to dismiss something as something she shouldn't do because she was a Queen. (Usually while Steiner jumped up and down protesting). So Hilda assuming she didn't want to learn just made Garnet want to protest. "I never said that I did not want to learn!" she protested, putting her hands on her hips. "Learning new skills is important, and what magical potions can and cannot do is something every Queen should know." She insisted. "Also, you never know when the fate of the world may require you to transform somebody from a Oglop back into a person," she teased her Auntie lightly. She knew Hilda would know exactly what she was referring to.
Hilda began to list the ingredients they needed, and Garnet, having just insisted that she was going to learn and that she totally could and it was worthwhile, did her best to not look too intimidated by the list of ingredients. She wondered if she should write them down. "Well, I am sure that we can find those," Garnet smiled confidently, walking forward beside her Auntie again. "Uh, I... do not suppose you have them written down?" she asked hopefully, already worried that she'd forget them.
Garnet couldn't resist a tiny giggle when Hilda said 'alrighty'. Garnet wondered if she had sounded that strange when she had first tried. Of course, Hilda followed it up with a follow-up question, and Garnet paused to consider. Okay, so maybe she wasn't an EXPERT on common speak, but how hard could it be? She travelled with enough people to pick up something. How would Zidane introduce himself? He'd probably tap his chest proudly, but she ignored that bit. "Oh, uh, well, you'd just say something like, um... 'hello, I'm Dagger!'," she smiled, not quite sounding so confident now she wasn't directly repeating what she'd been told, but it sounded about right. Wow, it had really been a while since she had thought about this. Maybe she had settled too comfortably back into the role of queen...

Garnet smiled, but her cheeks flushed a little as Hilda asked to be told more. Garnet was fairly sure if she told Hilda everything that happened while camping to survive on a journey across the world, well, her Auntie would probably faint clean away. Mind you, Garnet was fairly sure that her Auntie would faint if she told her about that time Zidane had seen her ankle. Garnet probably would have fainted at that at one point in her life. The memory made her smile a little. "Oh, Auntie," Garnet smiled playfully. "I think some of those stories are better kept secret," she giggled. "Zidane did try to teach me how to use one of his daggers once. I thought I should at least learn, since they're my namesake, but, well, I was rather unsuccessful at it." She settled on that story, fairly non-scandalous and one she hoped her Auntie would accept. "I was not very good at... producing... strength..." she grunted slightly as she mimed the stabbing motion. Badly. It was obvious that Garnet had no talent for fighting. At least, not physically.
Hilda seemed confident that she had found a similar joy to Garnet. Garnet wasn't entirely convinced. If not just the effort Hilda still put into her appearance, or her attitude, or the fact that she had just used the word 'quotidian' in conversation. Garnet almost laughed at that observation. There was a time such a thing would have seemed as natural as breathing to her, and instead, now it stood out like a sore thumb. Sometimes, she wondered if she was more Dagger than Garnet these days. Or maybe she was just more experienced.
"Well then, I shall endeavour to smile often," Garnet replied with a smile to her Auntie. At least she could help in that manner, even if she was still largely lost as to what to do about the problem of Kuja, or how to get back home. It felt good to be able to do something to help somebody, at least. Well, she was always doing that, as a White Mage. But this was different. This was emotional support.
"I-I mean, of course," she stammered, a little embarrassed when Hilda commented on how somebody had to make remedies. "I guess... I just never... thought about it. We used to find them on monsters," she explained, and then she paled a little. If the monsters ended up with remedies (and gil), it must have been from fellow adventurers they had... ulp... eaten. She tried not to think about it too much.
"Oh, learning to make remedies sounds.... very interesting," she hesitated a little, imagining grubby ingredients and a big pot. Something like Eiko's cooking. But she HAD just been telling her Auntie how brave she was and how used to life outside the castle she had become, she could hardly admit to being squeamish now. "It is pronounced 'street smarts', Auntie," Garnet said proudly. Obviously she was unaware 'streetwise' was a term, because, well, despite her beliefs, Garnet was anything but.
For a moment she hesitated. How DID you teach somebody to speak more like a commoner? It had seemed easy when Garnet had learned it, after a little practice (which some might say was because she had never mastered it), but now she had to try and relay it, it seemed difficult.
"Well, the first lesson I learned was that you should be more casual," Garnet smiled, walking beside her Auntie. While Garnet wasn't exactly as poised as Hilda, she still moved with grace, albeit with a slightly girlish gait, her arms held out at her sides. She thought back to the hillside overlooking Dali. "For example, instead of saying 'I shall try', you should say... 'alrighty!'" she explained. Of course, she hoped it made it sound like she knew what she was talking about, rather than the truth, which was she was just parroting back what Zidane had first told her.

Garnet smiled a little as Hilda spoke about how her journey had led her to appreciate what she had and when she had it. She wasn't sure that was quite what she would have taken away from it. Hilda, it sounded, now appreciated the finer things in her life because she had lost them while captive by Kuja, whereas Garnet...
...well, it was different for her. She felt that she had learned what life was really about. She had seen the world. She had seen a better way of living. All the pomp and circumstance of being a queen, all of the formality and the rules, it wasn't what living was about. Yes, she had a responsibility to her people, and she would follow it through, but Zidane had taught her a better way of living her life. She had once told Zidane that without him, she would have lived a meaningless life. She knew that Hilda would probably balk at that sentiment. A royal leading a meaningless life? But it was true. Royalty, rules, leading, even being in power, it meant nothing. Not really. Not compared to the world she had seen. The bonds she had made. She had learned what was important. And it wasn't the fancy dresses or the castles or the plays. It was what she was doing now. Being there, helping people, forming connections, doing the right thing, no matter what.
"Oh, I learned many new skills, but... that's not quite what I meant," she smiled a little. "I mean, I won't pretend there were nights that I didn't miss my bed back in Alexandria, or wish perhaps for a private room... I mean, have you ever shared a tent with a Qu? It is... not for everyone... but, well, for all the hardships... for everything I lost, everything I went through, I wouldn't trade that time for anything. I learned so much. I grew so far. And now I think I know what's truly important." She hesitated. "No, not just important... You can be important, but live a life without meaning. I know now what makes life worth living. Camping... may not have been fit for a princess or a queen, and while I remember... losing sleep on hard floors, laying awake as Amarant snored or trying to pretend Steiner waking up early for guard duty hadn't woken me up by the clanking of his armour.... I also remember... staying up late around the campfire... Roasting food together... Laughing, joking, telling stories... Steiner and Zidane bickering like children, Quina cooking us the most incredible meals, Freya teaching me how to better wield my staff, Vivi and myself becoming rather competitive playing Tetra Master... And then, at the end of each night, resting my head on Zidane's shoulder as the moonlight shone down upon us... And in those moments... I don't think my life has ever felt more worthwhile." She smiled at the memory. It felt so far away now, even here. But even in Torensten, she had had similar moments. Moments of lightness and enjoyment with her fellow White Mages in the Covent, and of course, time with the others she had met beyond that.
"Maybe you will find the same?" She offered. "I know that it can seem absurd now, but I suspect that one day you'll look back on these days with fondness..."
"You can make... remedies?" Garnet paused. It was a silly thing to say. Of course there had to be an alchemical component to most potions and remedies. A way of manufacturing them. They weren't just harvested from dead monsters! But she had never thought about it before. She let out a slight laugh in surprise. "I guess I still have a lot to learn about the world," she laughed a little. "I think that sounds like a good idea. Remedies are very expensive, and the church doesn't make much in the way of gil. Anything to make them cheaper would help greatly," she explained.
"Of course. I'd love for you to come with me. Maybe I can show you how streetwise I've become. I know how to act like a regular peasant girl now, when shopping," she said proudly. Of course, Garnet's assessment of quite how well she'd learned to blend in was, perhaps, a little optimistic as ever, but she was still proud of how far she had come. "Come on, Auntie," she smiled, laughing a little as she led the way out of the church.

Garnet was glad by Hilda's reassurances that Kuja would never hurt anybody again. She had been worried by her Auntie's thoughts. Hilda had seemed the type to forgive in the name of diplomacy, and Garnet knew that Kuja was no aristocratic noble who would approve of a peace accord. He would use every and anything given to him to his advantage, and she knew that he would exploit Hilda's forgiveness and use it to destroy her, and perhaps, even the world. Still, it seemed that Hilda was set in opposing his ways, and hopefully, she had given her Auntie something to think about in regards to Kuja's actions.
She did look a little sheepish at Hilda's comment about her 'Dagger' retort. Yes, okay, perhaps that had been a little silly. The type of one liner Zidane would have come out with on their adventures, not something a Queen should be saying to her Auntie. She was, truth be told, a little embarrassed. She had thought it was witty when she said it, but now she felt foolish. Like a child again. She supposed it was only natural talking to your Aunt to end up feeling that way, but, well, she was a Queen now. She had to remember that.
Garnet couldn't hide a light chuckle at her Auntie's dismay at shared accomodations. "Oh, I was quite the same. You should have seen me at Dali, when we first had to stay in an inn. There was only shared accommodations. I thought that I might faint!" Garnet smiled lightly. Of course, she had learned. She had adapted. "But, you may surprise yourself, at what you find yourself doing when you have no other choice. I did... so many things I had never even dreamed of on my journey. After that, sharing a room seems, well, rather pedestrian, if I'm honest," she smiled lightly.
Hilda asked if she could assist with any of Garnet's errands. Garnet paused for a moment, checking her list of what she had to do. "Well, I was going to head to the local store for some supplies. White Magic is useful, but not all of our members are powerful enough to cast Esuna, so sometimes it's beneficial to stock up on various remedies," she answered. "You are of course welcome to come with me. It's only a short trip to the nearest item store."

Garnet felt Hilda lightly brushing her hair as she held her close. It was such a comfort, and it made Garnet never want to break away. She knew that it wasn't appropriate. She was a Queen now, her days as a child were long behind her. The days of needing comfort from adults. She was the adult now. But, for a moment, it was nice. Hilda would never replace her mother, but it was nice to have an adult female figure that she could look up to. That she knew would love her, if needed.
She listened to Hilda's words. They contained wisdom, yes, but she thought they were much easier said than done. Deep down, she knew that it wasn't her fault so many people had died. It was like she had said to Hilda. Kuja had violated her. Ripped her power from her. How was Garnet supposed to know that would happen? She had no real understanding of her Eidolons back then. She didn't know who she truly was. But the fact remained. People were dead. Her people. Because of her mistakes. She realised that pain would never go away, even if she knew it wasn't truly her fault. She had thought she had beaten it. That she had evolved past it, but, seeing Kuja alive still, it had reopened those wounds. That fear within her of what he may do to her, given the chance.
Hilda was right though. Her concern had to be making it safer for the people who remained. Maybe THAT was why she was so afraid of him? "But that is why we must stop him. If he... attacks again... Can you imagine? Another Lindblum? Another Alexandria? But here, when we knew what he was? What he was capable of? I was young and naïve when he exploited me before. I am no longer those things. I won't, I can't let it happen again. Not when I know what he is. Not when I can stand in his way," she explained. Not that she had a plan, still. But she knew something had to be done.
Hilda's words about Kuja's power made her feel better, however. She was right. He was just a man. She had seen that. Powerful, but mortal. He could be defeated. He had been defeated. He should, really, be afraid of Garnet. If she united with the others, they could defeat him again. Couldn't they? But it was difficult. It was scary. "You're... right, Auntie. I will... keep watch on him. I will be prepared. He is at an disadvantage, and I have the advantage. Zidane is here, I am here, you are here, we are ready to stop him again if we need to. I just... don't wish for anybody else to be harmed this time. I wish to stop him before he can hurt others." It sounded naïve, she knew. Of course they all wanted that. But Hilda sounded as if she didn't quite believe that he was going to do anything bad again. Whereas, Garnet had no doubt that he would. It was in his nature.
No, that was too kind. Nature could be defied. Vivi was made as a weapon. Zidane was made as a weapon. Both of them found compassion, love, goodness. It wasn't in Kuja's nature. It was in his personality. In his choices. He wasn't evil by nature, he was evil by design. By his design. And she had no doubt that he would resume his evil ways at first opportunity, if he hadn't already.
She shook her head when they spoke of Zidane, saying how she didn't know his mind. Garnet couldn't hide a small smile and a laugh. "I love Zidane with all of my heart, but I am not sure I understand his mind either," she laughed lightly. His compassion and his soul would forever be a mystery to her, but perhaps that was why she loved him so much. The way he saw the world, how he helped anybody who needed it, and how he saw the good in everyone, it was so admirable. He was a thief, raised on the streets. By all logic, he should resent a spoiled princess, but he had loved her, protected her, guided her, and shown her so much. She might never fully understand her, but she knew that she would always love him.
She smiled lightly when Hilda told her about the meanings of her name. Not because it was news to her; it wasn't. Garnet obviously knew the symbolism of her own name. But more because it was the sort of story Hilda would have told her when she was little to bring her comfort. It was nice. It made her feel young once again, and that was... pleasant. She smiled, enjoying the story, such as it was. Hilda's name meaning Shieldmaiden was news to her, however, but she admired her Auntie's confidence.
However, she did have a slight correction to make. "Do not forget, Auntie, I am not just Garnet any longer," she answered. "I hope that you are right. That I spread... love and compassion, and that I can repel evil. But if I cannot, if Kuja attempts to harm anybody again, I am also a Dagger." She left it at that, because Hilda wanted to move on, and Garnet herself wasn't sure what that meant. She felt so much anger towards Kuja, but she wasn't a killer. She just... wanted to stop him. And she would fight if she needed to. She had proven that now, and it remained true.
Garnet smiled and laughed a little at Hilda's reaction to the threat of snoring. "I once thought the same. But on our adventure, I had no choice. After you have slept through Steiner's snoring, very little will keep you awake. And that's without mentioning the rather bizarre noises Quina could make in the night," she laughed. She wondered what Hilda thought of her, the young Queen, raised a princess, but experienced camping in tents and sleeping with others. She imagined it was a surprise to her. "I am sure that your services will be gratefully received, until you find your position," she smiled, ignoring the light teasing about how she wasn't going to have to save to find some lost love. She didn't want to ask about Uncle Cid. Did Hilda not miss him at all? She knew that their relationship was complicated. It was not... as simple as her own and Zidane's.
She obeyed Hilda's wishes and held her tongue about her further fears involving Kuja. But if Hilda could find her way into the court again, couldn't Kuja? Wouldn't it be possible that he'd work his way back up? Yes, Kuja was down now, but not out. Garnet knew that he could do anything. He had seemed utterly defeated before. And he had always bounced back, more powerful than ever. She would respect Hilda's wish, but her fear remained behind her eyes that their battle with the sorcerer was still only just beginning.

Garnet looked slightly ashamed when Hilda pointed out that she could make the changes she wished for. The problem was that Garnet didn't know if those changes were correct or not, and when she was Queen, it was almost impossible to find anybody to have a conversation with about her doubts. People always sought to reassure her, to tell her she was right to rule, but Garnet was so afraid that in her heart that wasn't true. She felt like she never knew what she was doing, like she was too young, too inexperienced to lead. But she knew now that airing those doubts to her Auntie would have the same impact as airing them to Steiner or Beatrix. They were doubts she had to keep private, for now.
"...I guess it's a concern for another day. It is fairly impossible right now, after all," she tried to joke lightly. "Alexandria is far from here." She still wondered what was happening in her absence. Maybe all of her doubts about whether or not there should be a Queen would now resolve themselves, since she had vanished and there was no heir. Maybe in that way, it would be better if she never went back...
She sighed. No, that was her wishful thinking again. Trying to find an excuse to stay when she knew her duties still awaited her back in Alexandria.
Hilda's faith in Mikoto was a surprise, given that she didn't know the genome. In fact, Hilda's faith in general never ceased to amaze Garnet. How could somebody have been through what her Aunt had been through and still believe in the good in everyone? She realised that, somewhat ironically given how differently they presented themselves, Hilda was a lot more like Zidane than Garnet ever was. Zidane would have had the same faith. Garnet... did not. She was afraid, she realised. She had seen too much and lost too much and she was terrified of it happening again.
"I will trust in your faith in Mikoto," Garnet nodded, wanting to mean the words she said, but knowing that her fear would threaten to overtake her.
The change in Hilda when Garnet spoke about Kuja was palpable. Garnet felt her heart tear in two. She felt awful. She knew first hand the trauma that Kuja could put people through, and she realised she had, inadvertently, opened that old wound for Hilda. She moved, her eyes glistening and damp from shame, and sat next to Hilda, where she placed a hand on her lap and looked utterly ashamed.
"Oh, Auntie, I'm so sorry..." she said quietly, and Garnet looked truly ashamed of herself. And maybe she was right, maybe treating Kuja as a monster was the mistake. But, Garnet couldn't help it. She was terrified of him and she always would be. And she felt the burden of responsibility pressing down upon her. She had to bring him to justice for all the people he had hurt. That was her responsibility, wasn't it? Not only as monarch, but as the person who's power he had used to carry out his wrath.
When Hilda rose to leave, Garnet hesitated, but rose with her. She didn't want her Auntie to leave. If anything, she needed her, now more than ever. She felt so lost, and Hilda was the closest thing Garnet could get to the advice of her elders, whether it usually have been her mother, Beatrix, Steiner, or Cid. She had always had guidance. And now she had none.
"Auntie, please... wait," she said. Garnet paused, looking at her for a moment, and then she reached forward and embraced her in a hug. It wasn't a gesture most made in public, not really, but the kind of thing a child might do to her Auntie behind closed doors. Or a peasant girl named Dagger who didn't have to follow formal etiquette. She held Hilda close, and became teary eyed. She breathed in that scent, Hilda's expensive perfume, the one that Garnet had always loved but never tried because it was so much her Auntie's scent. "I'm sorry. I'm just so scared of him. You're so kind and wise to rise above your fear, but..." Garnet hesitated. "He... violated me. He took my power and he used it to kill thousands. And every time... every time I close my eyes, I see those people dying," she explained, her eyes damp and tears flowing freely now. "A-and it's like, part of me is the one killing them. And in some ways, it is. Because it's my power. It's part of my soul. And I... I let him take it from me because I was scared and stupid and I went home when I shouldn't have. If I'd just been a bit stronger, I could have used my summons earlier. If I'd just been a bit smarter, I'd have stayed in Lindblum where I was safe. Instead, I walked into his trap and I gave him my power and he used it to kill so many and there's nothing I can ever do to make that right again." She released her Aunt, although her eyes were still damp. She brushed away the tears the best that she could.
Hilda was right of course, that when a war ended, kingdoms usually made peace. But there were negotiations. There was process. War criminals were tried by the winner. Kuja was doubtlessly a war criminal.
"I don't think anything will bring me peace," she admitted. "Zidane thinks as you do. That... Kuja is family. He... risked his life to save Kuja, back at the Iifa Tree. I didn't understand why then. I'm not sure I understand why now. I think that both you and he are so much wiser than I am." Another reason Garnet wasn't sure she was actually fit to rule, but that wasn't a debate she wished to continue.
"Please don't go," she said earnestly. "I-I mean, I do not think that you would appreciate the accommodations here. We all share a dormitory and there is rather a lot of snoring, although I am still certain Grace was wrong when she accused me of doing so..." Garnet trailed off for a moment. As if she snored! But that was a debate for another time. "But with your abilities, you would be most welcome here if you chose to stay. But even if you do not... your company... is appreciated. I have not seen any family for... a long time."

[attr="class,beacont"]
[attr="class,beatext"]
Hesitation flickered across Garnet's features. She could sense that she had made a mistake discussing this with Hilda. It was something that very much prayed on her mind. Hilda didn't really see it. Garnet could tell that. Hilda was much nicer and kinder than her mother, but still, an awful lot like her mother had been. Part of the system and not somebody who would ever understand why the aristocracy was flawed. Garnet wanted to point out that the very thing she used to boost Garnet's standing, that she had trained her entire life to rule, was Garnet's exact point. When she had left Alexandria Castle, she had been naïve, clueless, and helpless. Without Zidane she wouldn't have even made Lindblum. What kind of ruler, what kind of leader, was that unaware of life outside her walls? And that was typical for a princess, or so she was led to believe.
And that was without worrying about power corrupting. Everybody said her mother had been a kind, a just, a gentle Queen once. But she had power. And that power had corrupted her. It had turned her into a monster. What was to say the same would not happen to Garnet? She had been given power just because she had looked just like the child who had passed, she had been adopted and raised into power she had done nothing to earn. What was to say it wouldn't corrupt her? That thought terrified her too. She had always told herself, even when she was young, that one day she would be queen, but she would always be herself. But was that true? If power had done what it had done to her mother, could it do it to her?
And on TOP Of that, Lady Hilda had a point about herself. Hilda was vastly more qualified, or so it felt to Garnet, to lead than she ever was, but she had married into power. So... what if there were others like Hilda out there? So much more experienced than Garnet, so much better to lead, missing their chance because of some ancient blood claim to the throne that wasn't even true?
All of it rattled through Garnet's head, but she felt like she could say none of it. Hilda wouldn't understand. And besides, Garnet was a Queen. She had forgotten what it was like to be treated as one. Zidane saw her as an ordinary person, the people of the Church too, obviously. Even Beatrix and Steiner knew her differently now after her adventures. But Hilda saw her exactly as a visiting dignitary would, and it wouldn't do to further express doubts.
"Yes, I suppose that you are right. I apologise," Garnet said gracefully, with a small incline of her head, instead of going any further into the subject.
When Hilda snapped at her (in so far as a lady like Hilda would snap), Garnet actually looked a little startled. She replayed what she had said in her head, but she couldn't understand what she had said to offend her Aunt. She frowned a little.
"I apologise, Auntie. I did not mean to offend you," she said, but she was clearly puzzled. She didn't understand it at all.
Fortunately she moved on to asking what duties Garnet attended within the convent.
"Oh, it is rather simple really. We get visitors who are injured or sick, and I use my white magic to heal them. In exchange, I am given food and lodgings. Sometimes, adventurers come through here looking for experienced white mages to join their adventuring parties. Sometimes I sign up as it's a good way to make some gil, which until recently I had been spending on my search for Zidane. That... is less required now," she explained pleasantly. It was a rather good set-up really, if a bit mundane. A far cry from castles and corsets, but Garnet wasn't sure that was a bad thing. Even if there were nights she missed her comfortable poster bed.
"I hope that she makes the right choices. I do not know that I trust her," Garnet replied when she spoke of Mikoto. "I will never forget what Kuja did to Alexandria. To Lindblum. To his own world. Mikoto has as much potential within her to walk that path as she does to walk Zidane's. And while she is close to him, I will not be comfortable. I can only hope that Zidane can reach her when I failed."
It was only Garnet's well trained poise and grace that prevented her from showing offence when Hilda called Kuja 'Lord Sorcerer'. She simply commented dryly;
"He is no lord. He is a monster, plain and simple," Garnet said. She was worried. Hilda was speaking as if she was intending to confront Kuja. And do what? Ask him to leave Garnet alone? That was how it sounded. But Hilda also spoke as if she admired him. As if Kuja had just misbehaved a little, like her Uncle Cid. She wondered just how much Hilda knew about her captor. "I know that he has charm. I understand how he works his way into the courts and palaces of people he needs. He grew close to my mother and manipulated her. But I have seen his true face. I know what he truly is. I stood on a world as it died beneath his fury, as he tore apart the very foundation of a planet out of petty anger. And, at the end, in Memoria, when we did battle with him. I saw his anger, his rage, his power, and his desire to destroy. I stood at the source of all creation, of all life, and watched as a man tried to destroy it all. Kuja would willingly wipe out every living thing in the universe if given the chance. I beg of you, do not underestimate him." She sighed, and gave a small nod. "Do not worry. I will not confront him here without considerable back-up. I'm not the foolish girl I once was. I know how dangerous he is. When Kuja is brought to justice for his crimes, and I promise you, Aunt Hilda, there will come a day that he is brought to justice, I won't be alone."

Garnet put her hands on her hips and huffed in his general direction as he criticised her fake name choice. Okay, so she supposed he had a point, but surely by that logic anybody with her hair would stand out and they'd look for her. Besides, she met many people with unusual names. She didn't really see how being named after a dagger was any more unusual than being named after a garnet. "Well, it served me well when I was a princess and on the run," she said to him, smiling a little with pride at how he had been proven wrong. She supposed it hadn't really helped avoid her being found by the Black Waltzes, but it had done for a fake name when she had to offer one.
He raised the good point that nobody cared who she was in this world. That much was true, but that wasn't why she liked the name, after all. "Oh, I know," she nodded. "But... Dagger is more than an alias. Sometimes, I think that I am more Dagger than I ever was Garnet. Besides, I may not be known here, but I still suspect introducing myself as Garnet Til Alexandros XVII will draw more attention than introducing myself as Dagger," she pointed out. Garnet was no psychologist and didn't want to analyse why Dagger as a name meant so much to her. Maybe it was because it was what Zidane called her, or maybe it was because it was her chosen identity, instead of one forced upon her, or maybe it was because technically both the name Garnet and the name Dagger were fake, and she was neither of those people. She didn't know. She just knew if she had to play adventurer, she would prefer to do so under the name Dagger.
"I know how I must look to you, Caius, but I assure you, I am more than a pretty gown and a tiara. I do not need this dress to remember my home," instead, her hands went to the Falcon Claw's pendant around her neck. That she wouldn't part with. "My good memories of home are not tied to dresses. They are... tied to something very different," she explained. She wondered if Caius had parted with something he regretted and that was why he said so. "I'm no hunter, and not much of a combatant, but I am capable with white magic. I'm sure I can find those that need my help," she said, but she still thought selling the dress was a better starting point. Garnet didn't exactly have much experience with seeking employment, after all. It would take time, and she would need money immediately.
"All the more reason to sell it," she said when he pointed out how valuable it looked.
"Oh? And do they often venture into swamps in a Queen's attire?" she asked, smirking a little when he commented that his co-workers were alsowomen. "I mean, I hardly consider myself a bastion of practicality, but I know when I set out on my own adventure I at least wore a sensible garment." Okay, maybe bright orange hadn't been a good choice for remaining undetected. But the point remained that she had tried.
She looked back at the tied up gown, and nodded her approval. "Very impressive. This definitely makes life easier," she admitted. She was sure Steiner would have a heart attack if he could see it, but, well, imagining his reaction just amused her slightly more.

Garnet smiled slightly as Hilda told her that a Queen should see what was beyond her walls. It was, of course, true. A lesson Garnet had learned travelling the world with Zidane and the others. She wondered if it was a lesson Hilda knew as well. Her Aunt seemed, well, less equipped to survive the world than Garnet was, but looks could be deceiving, and Garnet knew that Hilda was as powerful as she was with magic. She hesitated for a moment, looking away from Hilda and at the fountain, and the water falling gently. "Sometimes... I wonder if there should be a Queen at all," she admitted. "I think of how little I still know. How much of the world I have still not seen, how... naïve and childish I feel when I listen to Zidane or the others tell me stories, and I think... what gives me the right to rule? Why should anybody listen to me? Why should I deserve such power, such privilege? Sometimes I think that the idea of Queens and Kings is broken. That Gaia would have been a better place without those born into rule. Where only the truly worthy lead. I mean, we both know that I am not even a real Queen. My entire rule is based upon a lie." Garnet paused, shaking her head and smiling gently. She looked back at Lady Hilda. "I apologise. Such thoughts... should not be aired, and... it is not as if I can change anything. Perhaps I only dream of an excuse to walk away from my responsibilities, but it does not exist. Whether I wish for it or not, I am Queen of Alexandria, and it will not change until my death. Those people are my responsibility. I must protect them," she decided.
"Please, do not be concerned for me. Life here is safe, by comparison to what I have been through. Has Eiko ever told you about the time we battled the Kraken alone? It was just the two of us, and our magics, with no warriors to protect us, no blades or black magic. Just the two of us white mages facing one of the fiends of legend." Garnet paused and laughed lightly. "I suspect one of two things. Either Eiko has told you that story every day for the past two years or she has never mentioned it because she's worried you would tell her off for doing something so foolhardy." Garnet wondered which it was. In fact, part of her expected Hilda to tell her off then and there.
When Hilda spoke of her time aboard the airship, Garnet smiled and nodded understanding. "For me, it was the first day that I spent in Kalm. It was a small farming village outside of Alexandria that I did not even know existed. We arrived there and I adopted my Dagger alias for the first time. And I simply... walked. I walked through the town and nobody looked at me twice, nobody announced me, I didn't have guards rushing about me or fussing to protect me. I remember feeling... almost light headed. As if I was floating with every step. It was like a wonderful dream. I was free. Whatever action I took in that moment, it was all me. Nobody to tell me what to do, or how to act, what was right or wrong. In that moment, for the first time in my living memory, there was only... myself." Garnet shook her head lightly. "Over time, I guess I grew used to that. And sometimes our journeys took us to dark places or on trying paths. There was so much heartache and loss, so much pain and so much suffering, but I will never forget the freedom that I discovered. It's a freedom that I have here too," she explained. She knew that Hilda understood, even if her newfound freedom had been different. And she expected that Hilda enjoyed traditions more than Garnet did.
"Thank you. It is... pleasant being here, but I know that I have duties to return to," Garnet concluded.
Next, Hilda asked about Kuja, and his strange claim. Again, Garnet shook her head. "No. He told me very little, and I suspect he was playing the innocent to avoid accusations. I do know that he gave Mikoto money, and sent her to buy... cosmetics, of all things. It seems that he is encouraging her to find her individuality, but... I do not believe his motivations to be benign. Kuja values his individuality, but in a selfish manner. I believe he is attempting to mould Mikoto to be the same," she explained. She asked about Mikoto, and Garnet hesitated. It was difficult to explain. "...I am not sure I fully understand genome relations myself. Mikoto was given a soul, like Kuja and like Zidane, and unlike the other genomes. She was destined to be Zidane's replacement on Gaia. Zidane was sent to Gaia to be its angel of death, but instead, he was raised as one of us, and his heart was pure. It is as though Mikoto is a blank slate. Kuja, I believe, views her as a sister, just as he viewed Zidane as a brother. I believe he wishes to shape her to be like him," Garnet reiterated. "I made contact with her but... I was unable to sway her. I do not... think she understands me. She sees in me... everything that she does not understand about humanity. But now that Zidane is here, I hope that he may reach her and avert what is coming."
She smiled weakly as Hilda assured her she'd protect her. "Aunt Hilda, please, do not seek him out. Allow me to protect you, to repay you for the years you protected me. I have dealt with Kuja before. I shall do so again, if needed."

Garnet looked across at Caius as they walked. He stated he had seen a god rampage through a city? Well, perhaps most people would find that hard to believe, but Garnet had seen Lindblum destroyed by Atmos and Alexandria wrecked by Bahamut. They were as close to gods as anything else. She thought about telling him, but she hesitated. He might ask her to explain, and that would mean reliving those memories. Worse yet, it would mean explaining how a power that should have been her, that belonged to her and was her responsibility, had been stolen from her and had killed hundreds, if not thousands of people. Garnet had pushed past the trauma, but she would never forget the sense of loss and horror. She would never forget what her mistakes had cost the people of Alexandria, Lindblum, and Cleyra.
He seemed to be sceptical about her chosen name, and Garnet folded her arms, perhaps a little defensively. "What's wrong with Dagger? I like Dagger," she said. She seemed to consider telling him a little more, especially since he asked of its origins. "Yes, like the blade. Somebody close to me used them as weapons and I needed an alias. Besides, I don't think they're that small. It's not as if I named myself 'Table Knife', is it?" she asked with an amused smile. There were much smaller blades to be named after than a dagger! "And I do not think calling myself 'Broadsword' would have achieved the incognito state that I hoped for," she added, still teasing him, obviously.
"Okay," Garnet nodded to his suggestion. She had no protests against making her gown more practical. She had been on plenty of adventures, and there were always more gowns. "If what you say is true and returning home is unlikely, it may be more sensible to sell this gown once I have found replacement clothes. I'd imagine it carries some value," she pointed out. She didn't often handle the finances on her last adventure (and when she had the... Treno... incident had occurred), but even Garnet knew that she was going to need money to survive. To pay for a place to stay, to find equipment, she'd need at least a staff, and to pay for food. Hm. Food would be a problem. She might even have to learn to cook.
Two years adventuring and she had no idea how to cook.
She stopped, finding some solid ground, and held out her arms. "Please, work your magic," she said, gesturing to the gown. "Dare I ask how often this must happen to you?" she inquired, because it seemed he had experience with assisting people with their impractical dresses.
