One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
As he watched the man simmer with every passing moment, Alexander seemed satisfied with the answer to his own personal question. Right, that brought back not so fond memories of... a lot of stuff, now that he thought about it. Maybe he was just done trying to be all service-y and helpful towards upper class twits. Or maybe that was just Fray talking. That might be it too. Although this made it a lot harder to help the ex-Emperor, and Alex a lot less interested in actually helping him. He continued with his blase observation.
He nodded disinterestedly. "Right, so your ego--" SMACK "--is more important than being speedy." He continued through the strike, his head tilting only slightly with the blow. At least Mateus would get some small satisfaction; there was a small cut under the lip that might get a drop or two of blood. Still, that also told Alexander that this guy was not a physical fighter. Like at all. Alex took a moment to squint at the taller man. "What the hell was that? Your fashion choices hurt more than that." He seemed more insulted by the lack of... pain in the blow, more than anything, he could already feel the other presence stirring. Fray approved, apparently.
He would not be getting the gil back now, instead, Alexander simply reached his sleeve and pulled out a card, squinting at it for only the briefest of instances lest he get slapped again before this was done. Spear. That'll do. It was a quick thought to himself, acknowledging it. With that, there was a sleight of hand, and what was once a spear was now the Lord of Crowns. Without any ceremony whatsoever, he placed it in Mateus' hand, before the symbol vanished and he quickly took the card back. Mateus for his part, would feel well... stronger, physically, than he did before, at least.
Lord of Crowns, Target: @dust - Increases damage dealt by a party member or self by 8% if target is melee DPS or tank, or 4% for all other roles.
And then with a snap of his fingers, Alex himself would feel a bit stronger... as would Mateus, apparently. Though Mateus would be the physical to Alexander's magical in this case. Alexander wasn't quite finished beefing up the fop. For some reason.
Embolden, Target: Alexander Sorel , Affected: @dust - Increases own magic damage dealt by 10% and physical damage dealt by nearby party members by 10%.
With that done, Alexander crossed his arms. In hindsight, he probably shouldn't have let the simple miner thing slip so soon, but well, it was a bit too late for that to go back now. Besides, this guy clearly hated being demeaned in any form. Now he was just curious to see if it would extend to generosity or only to insults. "Here's your pity buff. Try again." He bluntly stated, as he waited for another backhand to come his way. Though in truth, he didn't have too much faith in it hurting him either. Still, it may have been a bit over the top.

One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
It was a dull noise he made when attention was called to him. He casually turned to see who was approaching him, it just... well, he wasn't expecting what exactly he saw. Alex's eyes went completely wide as his heart stopped. Oh shit it's-- No way, what the hell was that doing here?! Oh that was bad! Oh gods he didn't want to go through that nightmare again! One line rang through his head as it all came flooding back to him.
"Evaluating necessity of vocalization component. TREMBLE BEFORE MY COSMO MEMORY!"
It took him a moment to realize that no, this man was not it. Instead, Alex noted that this man was taller than he was, and for that, Alex felt insulted. He'd always enjoyed being the tallest of the Scions, well, barring Urianger, but Urianger wasn't fair. Plus this man didn't seem like an Elezen, and instead, it was clear that he needed something from him. Offering up a bag of gil, Alexander looked from the bag of gil, his amber eyes drifting upwards to the man himself, before he turned to the guard. His eyes drifted back down Mateus, taking note of his clothes and his... what was with this man's hair? Really, now it was starting to make so much more sense. Yeah, he could work with this.
So, he just quietly took the gil and pocketed it. He cleared his throat, raising his hand to his mouth in order to do so. He was paid, and thus he would do his best. He would pull no punches. It was clear this man had business and was in a hurry. Alex just needed to know if speed was the priority or his own ego. Really, only one way to find out. "I'm going to level with you; you look like a fop. Take note, this is important." Yes, Mateus had just paid Alexander to insult him, and he was going to make full use of that. If only Alexander knew of the Emperor's temper right now.
Waving a finger up and down Mateus, he continued. "You look rich. The fact you just tossed me that gil is proof you probably are. The way he sees it, it's better to let you whine to a higher up and get him a shitty shift for a week, than it is to let you through and risk daddy's wrath in case you get, twelve forbid, singed, and he winds up at the hangman's noose instead." That was the problem. The rich were always given special treatment. He'd come to learn that no matter where he went, that was just a universal fact, sadly, and it was probably coming through in this man's case.
He crossed his arms, clearly undaunted by what he had said and what buttons he may have been pushing. It was also clear that he wasn't quite done yet. "If you really want in, that fashion monstrosity has to go. Get more common clothes, remove the makeup, hide your hair under said clothes because long hair's a giveaway you don't do manual labor, slouch a bit, look a little beaten down, you've got your head held way too high." He continued on, as his eyes continued to drift. He had dragonscale armor, and he was pretty sure what that this man's pants may have been worth more. "Commoners do not have access to these things, and the simple truth is, you look nothing like a commoner, which means it's too risky to let you through. To him, if a noble gets hurt, it's his head. If a commoner goes through and dies, well, shit happens." He shrugged. He wondered if this guy would see where he was coming from with this.

One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
The smell of the ocean breeze brought him back to Limsa Lominsa. He wasn't quite homesick yet. This new world held its own adventures. Oh he wondered how the others were doing without him back on the Source, but there was nothing he could do about that at the moment. In truth, he probably should be looking for a way back. That is of course, assuming the flow of time was the same here as it was on the Source. For all he knew, he'd been gone maybe a minute there.
He'd had to start blending in though. A suit of black dragonscale armor with a runed sword and a flashy Star Globe? If that didn't scream experienced adventurer then, well, Ragnabawk's barding probably did. He'd managed to throw some threads together at least, a simple white shirt, nice black pants with a blue sash, and some boots. Lovely! Well, he liked it anyway. Also kept him from completely baking in the hot sun while he worked. Mining, you see. The only fancy thing he allowed himself were the bracelets he received upon joining the Scions of the Seventh Dawn.
He may not have missed Eorzea, but he missed them.
It'd been a long day. Long, good day. He'd gotten his first menial job, his first menial job in forever! For once there wasn't an angry god or an evil empire or something horrible happening that counted on him to fix the problem! He had a pickaxe, he could go mine some ore, and get paid! Man it was great, Alexander could say that he was well and truly starting to get back to his roots. Here, the Warrior of Light and Darkness was just another asshole with some regular ass clothes and a pickaxe. But what to get it on? Alex immediately thought a drink, but that gave him an uneasy feeling. Maybe he could just brew something himself? If that was the case, then what did he need to pay the gil for when he could go get everything himself?
And that was a problem; when you became self-sufficient, what did you need gil for? Ragnabawk could take care of himself. That bird was better than most professional fighters for goodness' sake. So that left him with gil, and no real need to spend it. Well, aside from room and board. He had that handled nicely, needed a place to store his expensive stuff. Really now that he thought about it, it was weird that this place used gil too, just like his world. It also meant he probably shouldn't have left all his money with his retainers. But then there'd be no incentive to work, so, you know, silver lining.
Maybe go to an opera? He'd never really gotten the chance to do that back home, and now he had money. Though it probably wouldn't be enough. Workers didn't really make enough bank to go to an opera, did they? He pulled the gil he'd made out of his pocket and stared at it in a confused manner. Now that he thought about it, he'd never really bothered learning how normal people lived, had he? Fighting monsters, adventuring, saving the world, that was all he'd known. He knew he should've taken that Great Azuro gig. He wondered if they were still selling Blue Mage crystals? A performer wouldn't be too bad. Maybe he could look into that--Ooh he could! He could learn to be a Blue Mage here if he wanted! Probably!
Stuffing his gil back in his pocket, he found himself sifting aimlessly through the streets, busy as ever, towards an outdoor restaurant. Maybe he could see what was being offered here while he pondered his potential future endeavors in the Cerulean art of Blue Magic. Well, it was a nice thought, one to definitely go for later because food, but for now, distant rage made itself known in the form of distant explosions. "That can't be good." Alex remarked as he slowly looked in the direction it was coming from. Should he go take care of that? He looked back at himself. Right, he was in no way equipped for this. He could cast black and white magic, sure, but that Star Globe was really handy for that sort of thing. Part of him figured he should because, you know, hero. But another figured that something like that was beyond a measley adventurer/worker's pay grade.
As he stuffed his hands in his pocket and tilted his head, he waited for what would probably be panic.

Friends
Alexander has had plenty of friends over his life, but for one reason or another, has lost them all. Whether they ended the friendship, died, vanished into the aether never to be seen again, or just drifted away. One way or another, Alexander has been left alone, with only Ragnabawk and bloody Fray as constant companions. He's easy to befriend, but slow to trust, as he expects the new friends to drift away, same as all the others.
Enemies
How you wound up here is beyond me, but congratulations. Alexander doesn't really have much in the way of personal foes as he can forgive fairly quickly. Forgetting is another matter. More often than not though, his enemies just happen to be in his way at the wrong time. Push him enough to get his personal animosity though, and one will learn why the Warrior of Light & Darkness is not a toy to play with. Most Ascians end up here by default though.
Lovers
'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. He's known love, but like all the others, said love drifted away from him. For the most part, people don't really seem all that romantically interested in him, so he doesn't go looking. It'll take effort to win him over, but it can be done.

II. PERSONA
What people tend to first pick up about Alex is that Alex is a really weird dude. Able to go from one topic to the next without any break for him, he's often jarring people with his sudden shift in nature and his more whimsical moments. He'll contemplate, and often embark on, grand quests for the most mundane of reasons. Whether it's slaying gods themselves all for the sake of a tea kettle, or hunting down a couple worldbreakers because they wrecked his shop more than anything. Alex has really odd priorities. This however, just seems to be a holdover from previous incarnations, as by all accounts, Azem was the same way.
Don't worry about how weird he can get though, he's friendly enough. Or at least he tries to be. He's not some malicious jerk pushing people away because he's a lone wolf who operates alone, but rather someone who wants to be friendly but is sometimes bad at it. It's something that more goes hand in hand with how eccentric he can be, and that if nothing else, he does genuinely mean well. He'll often reach out to someone if he feels that's the better path forward, and generally dislikes it when he has to come to blows. ... Kind of.
That being said, he's not beyond compassion, and tends to adhere to it more than he probably should. While he's not completely naive, Alexander has a tendency to just... let people go when he really shouldn't. While this doesn't mean just letting someone completely off the hook, it does mean sparing someone when most other people would have killed them. There's usually a family or a friend attached, and he'd rather not cause pain like that if he can avoid it. While no one would fault another for killing someone in self defense, Alex does his best not to, and in fact he does carry this regarding others, mostly. While he won't generally judge someone for taking a life, if he feels that the person in question could have resolved it nonlethally and simply chose not to, then he might get upset. That being said, he has no problem resorting to lethal force if he feels there is an actual threat to the world.
Because of this, Alex has had to get creative in life, and tends to be a highly creative person in general. Whenever he's presented with a problem, he'll usually come up with some solution to it, even if it's rather unorthodox. While he has shown an interest in the arts, and the desire to actually learn other forms of creativity, this mostly translates to more uh, dangerous situations. Alex will bend over backwards and put in far more effort to resolve a situation without deadly force than he should. That being said, it's not completely in that area, and he actually does have some musical talent. ... Just, with a hurdy gurdy, though he insists on calling it a symphonia. He's also been known to practice the martial arts his mother taught him more for spirituality and recreation than actually fighting.
Alex is however, an ultimately heroic person. In truth, what brings him more to neutrality is that he's had to be both a Warrior of Light and a Warrior of Darkness, his life experiences, more than his actual personality. Even his time as the Warrior of Darkness was more to save a world from Everlasting Day than anything, even if he did come to blows with actual Warriors of Light later. While he can be a snarky and sarcastic brat, the truth is he's a bit of a boy scout and does his best to make sure everyone gets the best ending involved. Even if sometimes said best ending involves jailtime for those who deserve it.
Despite this however, he's surprisingly bloodthirsty. Well, relatively. While he won't resolve things lethally if he can avoid it, once he's in a fight, he's noted that he tends to actually enjoy it. This cropped up most notably in his fights with Zenos. As much as it kills him to admit it inside, he actually relishes it when someone's able to push him to his limit. Someone who could give him complete hell, he'd probably come to enjoy having around for a squabble. Had he never left the New World, there was a decent chance that he probably would have become a hunter instead of an adventurer.
Maybe that's why he can be so antagonistic at times. He's the type to, well, not really start an actual fight, but he does get some enjoyment out of pushing other people's buttons. While he normally doesn't just stand there and insult people, as that's just plain rude, there will be times where he will either play dumb or blurt out something a tad more absurd for the sake of getting under someone else's skin. It's a rare joy that he gets to afford himself, so he'll indulge in it now and then. That being said, it's something friends get to see more than people he doesn't know, as he knows they know he's just doing it as friendly ribbing more than anything. Of course, this also seems to be something that's carried over from previous incarnations, as again, Azem was the same way.
Yeah, he has friends, amazingly. You wouldn't really tell with how awkward the guy can be at times. He has trouble knowing exactly what to say at times, and it was honestly usually someone else that did the talking for him. In fact, combined with how eccentric he can be at times, it can be really difficult for him to actually make new friends simply because he as a tendency to put his foot in his mouth with a misguided comment or sheer trivialization or something else that, in the moment, he genuinely doesn't mean to hurt. He just does and then he's left kicking himself over it. Really, the only way Alex has ever been able to actually make friends is to go above and beyond and prove through his actions that despite how awkward he can be, he really is on their side.
He does have a bit of an ego though. Alex is not exactly the most humble person, and is fully aware of what he can do. In fact, more than once he's simply remarked about how he's killed someone's god, and he's not afraid to do it again. While he doesn't go about bloviating about how awesome he is unless he can find a use for it, or if it turns out it'd just be easier in the long run for him to say it, he does tend to overestimate himself at times, thinking that there really isn't a such thing as a challenge he can't stand up to.
All in all, Alexander is a strange, contradictory individual. He's eccentric yet awkward. He's friendly yet antagonistic. He's compassionate yet bloodthirsty. He's heroic yet egotistical. The guy's a walking contradiction that somehow manages to keep everything aligned and working. It's infuriating, but it's part of who he is, flexible and fluid, able to justify each contradiction and keep going. And that is what the Warrior of Light is like.
III. BACKGROUND
Alexander has two jobs. First and foremost, he's an adventurer. He's also really good at it. Terrible with money, so him running a business would be a terrible idea without someone to keep his spending habits in check, but the actual adventuring he's quite good at. Taking odd jobs, sleeping under the stars or in an inn if he can afford it, living off the land, these are all things that he enjoys doing, preferrably with company, but if he's alone for it, then so be it. Alex has a hard time saying no to a job. Even if it's menial, it just reminds him of his days just starting out in the adventuring business.
The second is as the Warrior of Light. Alexander's job is to, in his own words, "Keep the monsters out of the world's closet." A lot of people consider him some sort of superhero, or overzealous buffoon for this one, but it's something he takes seriously enough that, despite his complaints about being a Warrior of Light and being more than willing to let someone else take on the title, when things get serious enough, he'll personally step in.
Thou shalt not kill. Well, sort of. First and foremost is that for most of the world, Alex is probably one of the least threatening enemies they will ever encounter. Unless they're a proven threat to the world, there is virtually no chance of actually dying to Alex, and the Warrior of Light will not only pull his punches if necessary, but will even come up with creative ways to avoid having to kill someone. Ascians, Primals, and proven threats to the world itself are really the only surefire ways to bring out Alex's more lethal methodology. In some cases he's more than willing to step in to prevent any further bloodshed if he feels he can stop something before it gets even worse.
Alexander is a Red Mage, a job that he picked up in order to travel the land, smiting evil and saving the good wherever he went with X'rhun Tia. That is to say, he can do everything. Not as well as others in certain areas, but there is never a time when he is completely defenseless. Able to wield black and white magic at equally high levels, he's able to intersperse it with his swordplay, which is nothing to sneeze at but not the best, to great effect. That being said, he prefers methods that simply stop the opponent cold and end the fight (in his victory of course), and will often just take full advantage of status effects like sleep to just stop a fight quickly.
However, Alexander used to be a Blue Mage. In particular he learned from the Whalaqee while his parents were part of an expedition to the New World. While he eventually did pick up his tried and true calling as a Red Mage, he hasn't completely forsaken his roots as a Blue Mage. He's rusty, but he still has a few of his spells, and he still knows how to function as a Blue Mage. Meaning that, if he encounters the proper spells, he'll still be able to learn and use them. However, due to the lack of aether in Zephon, he's unable to mimic the spells of Primals.
I guess you could say his real Job then, is a Purple Mage. Let's go with that.
He also knows how to physically punch and kick from his time being stuck in the Bloodsands, but that's just a time he'd rather forget. And while his mother did actually teach him the martial arts of a Monk, it was only for spiritual and recreational purposes, and he doesn't know how to apply that to combat. He'd love to get a teacher though.
Alexander was fortunate enough that he didn't come to Zephon alone, able to bring his Chocobo Ragnabawk with him as well. Ragnabawk is a black chocobo that Alex managed to hatch back before Dalamud fell. When the moon came down and the man was thrown forward in time, he lost contact with his chocobo for about five years before reuniting with Ragnabawk some time later. Ragnabawk, as a chocobo, can fly, fight, tank, and even knows how to heal if need be. Alex has also been trying to teach him Choco Meteor, but so far to no avail.
The real oddity of his fighting style was the Echo, but he's found that he doesn't have that here in this new world. He's actually quite okay with this.
When not fighting however, Alex tends to prefer some manner of games. Normally he prefers Triple Triad as it's the more popular game around here. But he's noted as having been a really mean Lord of Verminion, and back home he would play an underwater ball game, which he was also noted to be extremely competitive with. Extremely good, but extremely competitive.
IV. HISTORY
It all began years ago with a Paladin of the Sultansworn and a Monk of the Fist of Rhalgr. It was a standard love story, there. The two of them met fighting against the Garlean conquest of Dalmasca, fell in love, and fled to the New World and its Golden Cities so they could raise their bratty newborn near the Whalaqee without getting him involved in some absurd war. It worked, surprisingly enough. Residing in a slowly growing expedition to document and sometimes hunt the monsters of this New World, Alexander, as the boy was called, found himself taking quickly to the great unknown of such a place. Because of the good relationship the expedition had with the Whalaqee, Alexander often found himself with them, and like everything else, took quickly to the ways of the Blue Mage.
In all honesty, his adventuring started young, scaring the living hell out of his parents as he'd often go out to mess around with monsters and the like. It didn't help that he'd often wind up dragging a bunch of other kids with him. But it'd work out, either the beast would turn out to be surprisingly friendly or they'd somehow overcome it, and Alex would add whatever spell it held to his repetoire. There was hopes that maybe getting him to focus more on his Blue Magic would get him to calm down, but anyone that actually paid attention to Blue Magic knew that it wouldn't help at all. His mother, teaching him her martial arts for the purpose of spiritual and recreational fulfillment (and giving him an outlet that wasn't running off into the wilds), didn't help either. His father, helpfully answering questions about how he met Alex's mother and what he did, had no idea he was only making things worse. It was a perfect storm, really.
When he turned sixteen, he already knew what he wanted to do. It's just his parents didn't take it well. Making it clear that he planned to cross the ocean and begin his career as an adventurer, he and his parents got into an argument, and ultimately parted on sour terms. While he still loves them dearly, he hasn't written back in a while. They're probably worried sick, all things considered. And they had every right to be. Shortly after arriving in Eorzea, Alexander quickly wound up broke, arrested, and sentenced to the Bloodsands, a violent arena.
During his time in the Bloodsands, Alexander learned more to slug it out, though he'd really wished his mother had taught him how to actually use those martial arts of hers. Fortunately, for the most part, his Blue Magic kept him going, and made him a really popular draw. Bad luck aside, it only took him a couple years to buy his way out of the Bloodsands, and being dirt poor once again, he had to scrounge up a new way of living. With no gear, adventuring was out of the question, and he found himself working for a few more years as a simple Miner, barely scraping by, much less actually turning a profit.
And then, at 23, his luck turned for once, and he met an old Red Mage outside of Ul'dah who was willing to give him a simple rapier and focus crystal and a quick magic lesson. When he returned, he was greeted by the sight of a meteor shower and a parade gone awry. The rest, is a very familiar tale. From joining the Path of the Twelve, to meeting his friends and apprentice Cassandra Amell, to slaughtering Primals, to the fields of Cartenau, Alexander found himself thrust forward five years in time, emerging in the state of Gridania.
The tale continued, rejoining the newly formed Scions of the Seventh Dawn, slaying Primals, driving the Garlean Empire out of Eorzea, toppling a corrupt Theocracy and ending a thousand year war, defeating the Primal of Time with a familiar name, defeating the Shadow Queen and her true master. Liberating a country and an entire continent, saving the world from an ancient robotic threat, uncovering the mysteries of Ivalice, traveling Eureka and so on and so forth, all the way to saving all of creation from the Endsinger, Alexander's adventures have made him a legend in his own world. And it is shortly after the Scions disbanded, that he finally had his rest, that he simply closed his eyes for a nice nap, and woke up here.
Perhaps he's quite ready for another adventure.
V. AUTHOR
PLAYER ALIAS:: WAGA OTHER CHARACTERS:: None. ROLE-PLAYING EXPERIENCE:: 14 years. HOW YOU FOUND US:: I am... not sure, actually. NOTES FOR CONSIDERATION:: IDK ROLE-PLAY SAMPLE::
How many times now? How many times had he gone through this? Torn away from all he had managed to build, left to start anew in a new world that he barely recognized, and didn't recognize him in turn? This would make... the fourth time now, yes. From Louisoix's magic trick, to being chased to Ishgard, to being called to the First. Time and time again he had been forced to start over again and again, alone and unaided. He felt his shoulder sag ever so slightly as he looked at the unfamiliar terrain. A dense forest, trees as far as the eyes could see. An uneasy feeling made its way into Alexander's heart, but it wasn't anything he couldn't handle. He would find his way out from there, and answer his questions later.
He was interrupted from his thoughts as he felt a nudging in his back. Alex turned his head to find Ragnabawk pushing ever so slightly with his peak. Slowly, he reached up and pet his chocobo. At least his constant companion had made it with him to this strange new land, so there was that. Even if the others didn't seem to arrive, as per usual, Ragnabawk could be counted on. Alex really should have given him a more respectful name now that he thought about it. Like, Shadowfax or something. Hell, he'd gone through all the effort to get that soot black look for the bird (he'd spent so much gil on getting the coat just right), he really deserved something a tad more magnificent than Ragnabawk.
They should probably get some feed for him. That would work. Maybe get some greens for him, hunt some food for himself, and then make his way outta there. Mounting Ragnabawk in one swift movement, it wasn't long before he was making headway, and--wait. He gave a tug of the reins, and Ragnabawk become to ascend into the sky with repeated flaps of his wings. Ragnabawk could fly.
