Hythlodaeus
Ancient | Age ? | 194x75 | M | Bard
«Now this is unexpected.» is the first thing that came out of the bard's lips as soon as he opened his eyes. He was clearly in someone's bed. But was it his? Definitely not. And he did not remember anything about last night. Did he sleep with someone? Was he too drunk to remember? But he was sure he had just faded away into the lifestream.. With.. With.. Whom? «Oh, dear. Amnesia? This is something new.» he muttered, but while his voice might have seemed curious and cheerful, in his heart he found an overwhelming emptiness. It was important. That person he had drifted away with, he was important - the most important person in his life, the one and only persone he could never live without.
Trying to keep as calm as he could, he stood. No dizziness, no pain. Good. «Alright..» he muttered, and he opened the door to face a young lady with golden locks and dark eyes. Why was everything so different? He had not really though of it a moment ago, but this place.. How could there be so little aether? Back in Amaurot, or even on the shard named Hydaelyn, this amount of aether would have been low enough for people to dissipate at the slightest alteration. Yet here.. It seemed completely normal. The aether was balanced, somehow, between people and the environment. This girl.. She would have probably been a bright soul sparkling in purple and blue, back in Aetherys. Here, though, she simply had a soft aura of that same color, and nothing more. Jusging by her looks, she was a common person.
«Oh, uhm, greetings!» he said with a smile, but before he could say anything else, the lady smiled back and told him to follow her. She brought him to another room, which had a kitchen and a table, made for two. She asked him to take a seat, and when he attempted to refuse she insisted, so he simply obliged. «May I ask what happened?» said Hythlodaeus while looking at her pouring some soup in a bowl, and just a few moments later she brought the soup to him with a smile. «I found you sleeping just outside my home, and the neighbors helped me bring you in. You definitely needed to sleep.»
With a rather confused expression, Hythlodaeus nodded. «Have I drifted somewhere, I wonder?» he muttered to himself, and the lady nodded. «Likely. You don't look like you're from anywhere around here.» He nodded once again. «I shall take my leave soon. But first.. I believe I have no way to repay you for your kindness. Is there anything I can do for you?» But she denied, and although the bard insisted, she would not let him repay his debt. An act of kindness is not a debt, she said. She was such a kind person. In the end, the purple-eyed ancient ate together with the lady, then left wearing a new set of clothes, that the lady had given him.
Wandering among the streets of the city, he soon found why, during their meal, the lady had told him to be wary. This side of the city was.. Something he had ever seen. It was as if the place itsf was split in two: the rich and the poor, the luxuries on one side and the struggle to live in dignity in the other. And he made sure not to mention where he was from, as suggested.
He soon remembered the reason of the weight on his chest. Hades. His beloved Hades, his best friend. For a moment, he thought he had lost him forever, but then, he remembered their promise. They would meet again in their next life, and supposedly, this was to be considered as such. So he started with questions. He asked for Hades, then for Emet-selch, and then even for that name he had heard once, Solus Galvus. And at some point, finally, someone told him he was alive and well. His relief was so overwhelming he almost burst into tears. Now to find the building he worked with, and get an appointment.
He offered to work as a waiter in the outskirts in exchange for someplace to eat and sleep, and did so for a couple of weeks. He had never been a waiter before, but luckily enough his memory, cunning and charisma helped him more than enough. Then, the day came. He bathed, then summoned a set of clothes, wore them, braided his hair and quickly started to walk towards his destination. He was so excited and anxious, his heart could burst.
A new life, with his lifelong friend. He knew Hades could be nothing more than that, but he had made peace with the thought eons before. He only wanted his Hades back.
At the entrance, he walked in with the usual smile painted on his lips. He announced himself to the secretary and waited for her to point him to the right office. He could already see his color. It truly was him. The bardwalked towards the door. His hearts was pounding loud enough for his ears to ring. Then he knocked, and waited, quivering in anticipation. «May I come in...» he asked, after a few seconds «... Hades?»

BATHED BLACK IN SILENCE, OUR SURRENDER A SOMBRE REVERIE
Alex was in the area. That much was clear. For what, he didn't know, and he had no intention of finding out. Meddling with Alex was much like meddling with his predecessor, it brought nothing but trouble. Cassandra had been missing, and that caused Hades some issues as well. What in the world was going on with those two? Nevermind that he was swamped with finding matches. He'd seen an uptick in business as the year drew closer to Winter. And that meant having to go over profiles he had on hand, scribbling recommendations, the like. And as it was something that he preferred to do himself, that meant he was often up quite late. That in itself was nothing new. The sight of dark bags under his eyes and creases in his brow were always a common sight when it came to the office of Emet-Selch, both before and after the Sundering. But that focus left him open in some ways, especially as a phantom decided to make himself known.
Of course, when Hades was caught in working on something, and his concentration went elsewhere, instinct had a tendency to take over. And for Hades, instinct regarding Hythlodaeus was to begin verbally eviscerating him for having his usual timing. There was an exasperated snarl, all too familiar, twelve thousand years old, from the other side of the door as he looked down at his pen. Without even thinking, his response was already being formed. "Of course it's when I have work to do that your impeccable timing deigns to--" As his brain finally caught up, and the voice registered. The writing stopped as it processed the words. The owner. "Deigns to..." He trailed off, his voice shaking, his hands trembling as he placed the pen down. Please. Please. Please let this be real. Don't let my dreams place another illusion in front of me, only to take it away. His most fervent wish had always been to have everyone reunited, with one night where they didn't say farewell.
This could wait, he decided, as he quietly shuffled his papers together neatly, placed them in a well organized pile. "... Please do." He said softly, lacing his fingers together. The aether told him who was behind the door, but there was a part of him that simply wouldn't believe it otherwise. His mind had played too many tricks, pulled the rug from under him too many times. It had become dangerous to hope, better to shove it away and continue the eternal slog to see the Great Work done. But he wouldn't deny the hammering of his heart, the lump in his throat, that small burning fire that he had made sure to smother away in the pursuit of that ever distant utopia. But his knuckles tightened all the same.

As soon as he heard his voice, Hythlodaeus's heart seemed to stop for a moment. He took a deep breath and put one shaky hand on the door, pushing it open. Then he closed it behind his back, without even looking at it, as his eyes locked onto the figure of his dearest friend. He stared at him for a long moment, with his usual smile on his lips, before he finally gathered the strength to speak. "Have you missed me, Hades?" He asked, before he started walking towads him. He stopped right in front of the desk. "I see your brows are still united as one." After this comment, he chuckled just slightly and extended one hand towards him leaning forward onto the desk, in the attempt to slightly massage the point in between the dark-haired ancient's brows with two fingers. "And look at your eyes. How many days has it been since you last slept? You should really rest, every now and then, my friend."
His hand was still shaky - he was still trembling with anxiety, anticipation and so many other feelings, but he tried his best not to show, even if he was almost sure that his dear friend would just know. His smile slowly faded, shifing to something very different, in-between relief and regret. "I'm sorry." He muttered, lowering his gaze. "I know I must be bothering you. I know you must be busy. But.. but.." He tried to hold back, to contain himself, but in the end he just couldn't and as he covered his mouth with the back of his hand he simply started crying. "I awakened to amnesia. And when I remembered you.. I thought the threads of fate had chosen to keep us apart even in death. I thought I would have to keep being my usual, useless self - but without a purpose."
He took a deep breath and finally looked at him "You are my purpose. You and Azem. And without you, I.." He rubbed his arm slightly with the opposite hand, as if he was cold. "I had to find you. And when I heard about you, I.. I had to come here. And these last few interminable days.. I did not even think you might have forgotten me. Or that you may not want me with you. But you have your life, and.. and I'm just a shadow of the past, am I not?" As he tried his best to smile as if he didn't care, ignoring his own tears completely, he tightened the grip on his arm. He should not have come. He could see his feelings, but he could still not believe that they had truly missed each other. He should have thought about this far more carefully.

BATHED BLACK IN SILENCE, OUR SURRENDER A SOMBRE REVERIE
It was him. It was unmistakable. One step closer to that dream. Still others remained, but this wasn't a dream. Hades would go to sleep, wake up, and Hythlodaeus would still be in this world and not some mischief of the mind. Atlas was around, in his own way, even if he'd gotten a rather rotten attitude in the meantime, and Persephone... Persephone was complicated. Hades couldn't say anything, his brow furrowed, and it must have given the wrong impression, considering that Hythlodaeus immediately offered to remove himself from Hades's life and denigrated himself. Was it really that bad? He knew he'd always looked like a grouch, but he thought... though he had to be honest, perhaps the simple solution was that Hythlodaeus was vulnerable and as such in a darker place than usual. Too easy, right?
He was never good at being the comforter. Because he always tried to do so with reason and that never really worked for emotional moments such as this. Even Persephone had told him as much. That was usually Hythlodaeus's job. His was to grump and snark and then do whatever was needed anyway while Hythlodaeus explained that Hades was actually a giant softie. Nevermind that Atlas was rarely of help; his train of thought may as well be a carton of spilled milk. And sure enough, Hades' first instinct would have been to say that such a notion was ridiculous. He obviously hadn't forgotten him, nor did he consider Hythlodaeus as some absurd shadow to be dispelled; he wouldn't have dropped everything to see him. But to simply call it absurd it would be to dismiss Hythlodaeus's concerns. Would any answer even suffice still? His friend had always tried to cloak his actual opinion of himself in a few offhanded jokes, thoughts that no one would notice.
But Hades did. He always did.
A course was decided, Hades would simply do the best he could in this situation; he could do no more. "No, you are not bothering me. You are always welcome in my life." He tried to speak in his softest, soothing tone, knowing full well how utterly strange it would sound coming from him of all people. "Take your time. I'll not be going anywhere." Perhaps if he simply let Hythlodaeus let out his emotions, then his being there, listening and unjudging, would be enough? This news of amnesia, though, Hades would not call it concerning. Depending on it all, it may very well have been a blessing that Hythlodaeus could remember nothing that had transpired. He wouldn't press it now. There were more important things to worry about.

As Hythlodaeus let out his concerns, he changed his mind about everything he had done from the moment he had remembered Hades to that very second. He should not have looked for him, he should not have reached out to him, he should not have booked an appointment, nor talked to him..
But the man's words suddenly blew away all of those thoughts.
Welcome in his life, he said. He would not be going anywhere, he said. Hearing those words coming from him, and with that very specific tone, made Hythlodaeus freeze for a moment. Even his tears stopped flowing, every bit as pleasantly surprised as he was. The pink-haired raised his head and looked at his lifelong friend. "Are you.. comforting me, Hades?" he asked, with the hint of a smile on his lips. A much more heartfelt one, compared to the one from a few moments before, as he was speaking his thoughts and regrets out loud.
He took a few steps towards his friend and eventually ended up right beside him. "Well.. I feel.. lost. Confused. Scared, even. Terrified, to be completely honest - I don't know where I am, or why, or what I'm doing, or what I will do. But you.." His smile widened as Hythlodaeus extended a hand to rest it on Hades' shoulder, while speaking. He only wanted to do exactly that, to rest his hand on the man's shoulder, but as soon as he made contact he lost track of his own intentions and squeezed it. Slightly, at first, but then harder and harder. "You're here. Right here beside me." he whispered, trembling slightly. "I.. I don't need anything else. I can take anything that comes my way, now."
He did not even realize when, but sometime after those words he let go of the man's shoulder, and leaned forward to wrap his arms around him in a tight embrace - until his dark haired tickled the bard's face. "Ah." He muttered as realization kicked in. Hades had never been much for physical contact, had he? Perhaps he should let go. But he did not want to let go. Yet again, he did not want to be a bother to his friend. And as his thoughts kept fighting against each other, he stopped moving altogether.
Would he push him away? Hythlodaeus would understand. But he still did not want him to.

BATHED BLACK IN SILENCE, OUR SURRENDER A SOMBRE REVERIE
He wasn't sure if Hythlodaeus was making fun or not. His brow furrowed for it. He knew he wasn't the best at this, but at the very least, his friend could put in the effort to not seem so surprised. It took Hades a moment before he unfurrowed, returning to a calmer expression. He cursed himself at how easily he fell back into old habits on instinct. Especially when right now was not the time for them. So he kept himself in check, he would be good. He just wasn't sure what to do, and a moment of awkward silence ensued. "You would do the same for me were our positions reversed, would you not?" It was a delicate navigation. He couldn't simply say yes, though he wasn't sure if that would have been the right answer as well. Once again he wished the others were here, they could handle this so much better than he, but they weren't. Well, Atlas was, but as he was now, he'd manage an even worse job than Hades.
Oh yes, things had been reaching his ears. He half considered stepping in before Alexander did something he couldn't get himself out of. But that had been thrown to the wayside when, with no warning, he'd been touched, and then embraced by the bard. He flinched on instinct. It wasn't Hythlodaeus. Truly, it wasn't him. Hades just was very, very, very choosy about who could touch him. Atlas had long discovered the best way around this was to just grab him before Hades could really respond, and he wondered if Hythlodaeus was taking a cue from their mutual friend. Even Persephone had to invest no small amount of time to get past that barrier. He was always a bit ornery. And it took no small amount of willpower not to struggle and try to get out, and that was in no way related to the man doing the embracing.
Still, after the initial moment of shock subsided, Hades stiffly, awkwardly, and slowly returned the embrace, even putting a few pats on Hythlodaeus's back for good measure. This was wildly, completely, totally out of his comfort zone. Oh, as the Emperor he had played the part, but it had always been a part. This was not Solus zos Galvus, or any of the myriad masks, but himself, and it was harder not to act like himself when in that skin. But the questions, it gave him something to focus on, and that was greatly appreciated right now. "You're on a different star. The indigenous population calls it Zephon. No one really knows why we've been pulled here." But he would love to know. So very much, because with that knowledge came hope. Hope for more reunions like this.

In hearing his friend’s words, Hythlodaeus chuckled, hiding his lips with the back of his hand as usual. “Of course, Hades. I jest,” he replied, before walking closer to him and letting him know all of his thoughts. He was lost, confused, and scared. Much less so now that he had found his beloved lifelong friend. He only wanted to rest a hand on Hades’ shoulder at first, but he ended up embracing him before he could stop himself and, as soon as he realised what he had just done, he hesitated. He knew just how picky his friend was, touch-wise. Yet again, just for once, he chose he needed to feel him physically close more than he worried about the other’s boundaries. Just this once. And he could still push the bard away if he wanted to, could he not? But surprisingly enough, he let him. Not entirely willingly, if he had to guess.
After he felt the few pats on his back in the very stiff attempt to comfort him and heard the words Hades spoke, Hythlodaeus let his friend go and took one step backwards as he tried to let the new notions sink in. He had somehow travelled to a different star called Zephon. Accidentally, or maybe pulled by an unknown force in his sleep - he did not remember. “What about ours?” he asked, furrowing his brows slightly in a confused expression “What happened to it? Actually, why am I…” he looked at his own hands as if he was seeing them for the first time. “... alive?”
He looked at Hades once again, this time forcing himself not to get too close. “In my latest memory, I was drifting off into the lifestream. Then I awakened in someone’s bed because that very same someone had found me unconscious in the streets.” He rested his head on his fist, as his elbow rested on his other hand. He lost himself in thought for a few moments, pondering the possibilities that could have lead to that very moment and of what could happen from there on, then he gently shook his head. “No matter. I am with you, now.” He smiled softly, before seemingly remembering something. “Ah! Is Azem here, too? I would love to see them.” he then cheerfully asked.
