A sudden jolt sends life rushing into his lungs. Kimahri screams, his roar echoing all around the cavern walls. Only the cacophonous chirping of crickets and the shuffling of dirt beneath his leonine body were what greeted him back.
Pain. His entire body felt nothing but sharp, stinging, throbbing, burning pain.
As if somebody had lit him on fire.
The world spun all around him as he tried to regain a sense of direction, forcing Kimahri to roll onto his side as nausea began to set in, until he reflexively heaved forward once, twice, three times, and viciously emptied the contents of his stomach against the cave floor. His gasps are loud and haggard; every breath he took felt like he were stealing it. Like he was living on borrowed time.
Time? How much time had passed since—
Yuna! Confusion gives way to horror, then to panic. What happened to Yuna!? Is she okay!? Where is—
Kimahri hacked and wheezed as he struggled to make sense of it all, lurching forward as he tried to crawl along the cave floor. Something happened to him. Made him lose control. Become lesser than himself. How did it happen, was what he would have asked her. But between the overwhelming vertigo and the all-consuming pain, he could only recall fragments in between the vast, gaping darkness that rested where his memory should have.
But after the fact, however? Kimahri wasn't certain if he would be worthy to ask her. How could he? Flickers of her face, filled with terror and confusion and streaked with tears he never wished to see, made it impossible for him to consider the likelihood of such an event ever occurring.
Still, he had to make sure. He needed to know if she was still alive. Even if she would hate him for it. For everything he put her through, he had to make sure. More importantly, he needed to see if that monster was truly dead. And if not, on his honor as Yuna's guardian, he would make sure to finish the job personally.
But the pain that wracked him sapped away at what little strength he had, threatening to immobilize Kimahri altogether. He scowled with every inch he moved forward, grunted as the scorched wounds and muddy cuts sent more spikes of pain stabbing into him. It was nothing compared to how badly his heart hurt for Yuna.
He was prepared to do it, then. He would die for Yuna twice, if it meant she lived.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
"Exploring a spooky cave! Exploring a spooky caaaave! I'm not scared 'cause I'm explorin' a spooky caaaaave!" Yuffie sang into the darkness as she half skipped and half ran into the shadows. Okay, so it WAS pretty dark, and there were lots of stories of ghosts and stuff in the Headstone Forest. But she was Yuffie Kisaragi! The Single White Rose of Wutai! She didn't fear a ghost! She ate ghosts for breakfast!
Well, actually, she'd had this wicked sugary marshmallow cereal for breakfast and ever since then people had been avoiding her because she'd been so hyper. Which was, in fact, pretty standard, so she wasn't sure the marshmallow cereal was to blame. ANYWAY, the point was, ghosts didn't bother her, and everybody knew spooky caves was the BEST place to hide materia!
"Here, materia, materia, materia...." she sang out, which was actually harder to do than you'd expect with the word 'materia'. Okay, so, so far she hadn't actually found ANY materia in Zephron. Any amateur materia hunter might have given up so far. But not Yuffie! She just assumed that meant the materia that WAS there was even more powerful and rare, and just super well hidden! Besides, it didn't make sense that only people came across from another dimension. She had come across, WITH her materia, so it was logical to assume materia came across too, right?
And then it ended up in spooky caves!
She couldn't wait to show Caius when she came back to Dragonblades Headquarters with an armful of new materia! That'd be WAY cooler than his stupid gun sword thing or his teleporting trick he did. It was then that she heard a weird noise from ahead. A sort of grunting. Maybe growling? She approached cautiously, flicking her giant shuriken down in her hand.
And she spotted it! Barely noticeable in the filth and dirt, like it was camouflaged, but a towering blue monster! With a big broken horn, and two legs. Well, she'd fought a lot WEIRDER looking monsters. She jumped back into her combat position, shuriken raised, ready to fight.
And then she watched the monster, just sort of pathetically rolling there. Not attacking. Not even taking up a fighting pose. Well, what was she meant to do there? She wasn't just gonna throw her shuriken at a pathetically dying monster. But she couldn't exactly heal it, could she? It was a monster. It'd try to eat her. There was no point in making the fight more difficult for herself.
That was called strategy and clearly she had paid attention in Master Shake's training sessions all about the art of combat and strategy and really HAD just been resting her eyes, see?
"Um, hey, monster... thing?" she called out. "Look, this is kinda awkward, but would you get up and attack me so I can kill you without feeling bad?" she asked. "It's just, usually monsters attack me, and don't just sorta... lay there covered in dirt groaning, y'know?" she added.
"You ARE a monster right? And not just, like, a really fugly guy?" she asked. Okay, uh, maybe that was a tiny bit rude. Maybe she should have just said 'slightly fugly'. That would have been more polite. She wasn't used to being polite. To monsters. Or... y'know, people in general.

Between the sound of his own body scraping against the earth and his haggard breathing, Kimahri could just barely make out a third noise coming from deeper inside the cave he was attempting to leave, well beyond the remains of the fire that had long since burned out. Sharpened steel had been drawn.
Too weak to roll over completely, Kimahri's hand flickered with static energy—the beginning vestiges of a Thunder spell—until a more literal bolt of agony causes him to spasm and howl aloud, consequently dispersing the crackling magical energy as fast as it had gathered. Had that demon siphoned his ability to cast spells, too?
Instead, he used that hand to crawl further away from the new threat, certain it was ready to kill him, until it spoke. What sounded like a small female child asked Kimahri to fight back, namely so that she could kill him without feeling bad about it. He would have rolled his eyes, if they had not ached so badly.
She levies another question at him, using a word Kimahri does not understand as a description of his appearance. He ignores her blithering, certain it was a ruse of some kind; the Ronso tries to lift himself to his knees, yet his legs wobble with each attempt to walk. Blood trails from every wound on his mud-caked body, his fangs practically smeared with it.
What's happening to me? Kimahri grit his fangs at the thought of his dignity, his pride as a guardian, being soiled so thoroughly as it had been. How have I failed so much? Without Yuna, his guiding light, he was lost to the darkness of uncertainty and doubt. Now he was here, about to be slain like some common monster.
Still, Kimahri persevered onward. Purpose drives him. Fight, he did not want to, but prepared for his own end, he was. If he was to die here and now, then he would be ready to take his enemy with him.
Yet his condition betrayed Kimahri's feelings about the matter. He was in no state to do any fighting, and if this girl knew better, she'd drop the charade and try to act sensibly.

The chance to leave Torensten for the first time was quite exhilarating! A group was heading to the Headstone Forest and wanted someone who could adapt to minor jobs and perform basic first aid. Sarah's time at the orphanage had seen her gain a range of practical mundane skills. Many she didn't have before on account of her training to lead Cornelia. Some wanted to work on an old road, some were tasked with hunting down certain items, a few professors from the university wanted to encounter said spirits for research. It was quite a caravan and they'd kept some basic rules while being within the forest. The first was a curfew so that members didn't get lost in this place.
Sarah wasn't one to push her luck in light of the safety measures in place. Unless cries for help were heard, in this case it wasn't cries for help so much as voices reverberating. There was a cave close by, it didn't seem particularly dangerous. The risk was more getting too far from the group. Chancing it in case someone was lost, given she heard a female voice, Sarah cautiously made her way inside.
"Please excuse me, is everything alright in here?" Sarah projects her voice so that she could be easily heard. Her gentle steps accompanied the swishing sound of a rucksack; filled with supplies. Her garb was rather modest, a mint green dress of a woolen make. Black boots fitting traversal of this biome. With a dark blue hooded cloak draped over her shoulders. Certainly not the attire of a Princess, it had been awhile since she wore the outfit she arrived in.
Thus the Princess was rather rehabilitated, compared to other dimension travelers. With her current attire, it wouldn't be difficult to mistake her on first glance as a denizen of Zephon. Except... Outworlders had a way of standing out. Perhaps that was why her reaction to Kimahri was different from Yuffie's. She'd been approaching from the materia hunter's flank when she caught glimpse of the man. To think someone was injured and struggling here! "Please do not strain yourself, sir. I have supplies for basic treatment. Moving about in your state will make it worse. You could also cause infection." Sarah asserted herself best she could, given her gained experiences.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie peered at the weird creature as it tried to get to its feet. It was clearly badly wounded, which was beginning to let her understand the situation. But she watched as he tried to stand, and sank back down, and seemed to catch a glimmer of something in his eyes. A level of intelligence. He wasn't an ordinary monster.
"Heeeey, wait a minute, you're a guy, aren't you?" she said, leaning forward, hands behind her back to peer at his face. "Don't worry! I'm totally experienced in this area! One of my best friends is like mostly dog. Or maybe mostly cat. I'll be honest, I've never been too clear on that. But his tail is on fire and he's super weird!" she explained. Or got as close to explaining as Yuffie ever did. "I got a curaga materia right here! I can heal you right up, then get you outta here. Don't panic, I'm totally a ninja. I can protect you. Nobody gets the drop on Yuffie Kisa-"
"Please excuse me, is everything alright in here?"
"WA-AGH!" Yuffie jumped out of her skin, flailing as her shuriken flew in the air, and then clattered down at her feet again. She span around to face the rather boringly dressed girl who had snuck up behind her. By contrast, Yuffie was dressed like, well, Yuffie. In a combination of a turtleneck sweater and crop top that was somehow both and neither, with fishnets on one arm and one leg, skimpy shorts that were left unbuttoned, bright yellow gloves and sneakers and big socks over the top, and her arm protector that looked more like a big pillow than practical armour, not to mention her ninja headband, she looked-
-well, awesome. Obviously.
"Hey! Don't go sneakin' up on people in a spooky cave!" she insisted at the blonde, scooping up her shuriken again defensively. "You're lucky I'm such a pro I wasn't scared at all or I might have shurikened you to the face!" she added. "And yes shurikened is totally a word, I'm a ninja, I know these things."
She glanced back at the suffering monster-guy, and paused between them.
"Relaaaaax, Dressy McRobepants," she said to the girl. Okay, the nickname needed work. "We don't need 'supplies'," she said, mocking her voice back at her. "We need MATERIA! And I got just the spell right here! Watch THIS!"
"Curaga!" she announced, casting the spell as the appropriate materia glowed in the slot on her shuriken, casting it onto Kimahri.

The girl seemed to recognize that Kimahri was no mere creature of the wilds, which gave her all the more incentive to start jabbering away as if he had any interest in hearing about her so-called "expertise" in the affairs of beastkin. She then offered to use something she called "materia" to heal his injuries, until a second voice, also female, made its presence known to the unlikely pair.
Another woman, who was dressed far more plainly than the younger child, saw the commotion and attempted to yield medical attention to the Ronso warrior. Discounting the blood and grime that caked his entire body, he wore a leather harness and girdle denoting his tribal origins, themselves a memento of his people, now a reminder of a legacy that held no meaning in this world. For all intents and purposes, the two women had effectively stumbled upon some uncivilized savage incompatible with human culture, were it not for his continued struggle to resist their efforts and escape the cave before more of them showed up.
Between the pair of young women, the more dignified of the two tried to insist that Kimahri not strain himself and let her examine his wounds, only for the more outspoken child to rebuke her by insisting on her earlier plan: use this so-called "materia" to cast a powerful healing spell and bring aid to the injured Ronso. He would have found their concern for a total stranger to be touching, if the migraine headache and the blood loss hadn't complicated his ability to be thankful in the moment.
A green wave of rejuvenating magic practically blossoms over Kimahri's body, drenching it in healing light. But nothing occurs, even as the spell's effects begin to wane. The Ronso sputters, once again trying to rise up to his feet, a task that would have been easier, had he still carried his spear. Did he leave it behind? Had it been destroyed during the struggle?
He stumbles until his upper frame hits the cave wall, leaning against it for support. Infected wounds were the last thing on his mind. As far as Kimahri knew, his entire being was tainted. These two have no idea what kind of creature did this to him. And he could not speak of it, lest he put their lives in danger, as well. Even at the risk of severing all contact from society at large, Kimahri Ronso still thought of others before himself.

The young lady she'd snuck up on (rather effortlessly, by Sarah's measure) was quite talkative. Honestly, she reminded her of Claire, which was mildly surprising. Unfortunately, she could barely get a word in edge wise before magic was used. She observed the magic fail and looked rather perplexed. Well, it's not that the spell didn't execute, it went off just fine. The problem was it's curative effects did not affect the target in question. As a result, Sarah proceeds to move past Yuffie so that she could aid the man in question.
"Have you been cursed, perhaps?" if so magic would certainly not do and thus she got out the supplies to start aiding him. There was bandage wrap, alcohol, ointment and more. She took the time to reveal them, so as to not violate permissions. "Try not to strain yourself, this will sting." she indicates referring to the alcohol, which she has to apply to a fresh cloth before using it. Acting as a human crutch if need be after attempting to dress the wounds, she decided to use her words and get some valuable information.
"How did you end up here, exactly?" best to solve these plot points in order after all. That was only the first problem, the next was...Yuffie. "So, how did you end up here exactly young lady?" the first of many questions she had for her. She gave her a look, trying to grasp her attire, clearly that didn't help her. In fact...
"W-what's a ninja and what's that strange weapon you've got there?" after all, she did threaten her with such. She could understand that whatever this weapon was, it could store magic crystals to aid in casting spells. In fact, she herself had some as well. Though magic had failed thus far. Part of her wondered if it was the cave? She took some time to at least look around, trying to see if there were some runes. Really, until the man had recovered enough strength to hold a conversation, there was quite a mystery on their hands. Worse, she wasn't sure if between Yuffie and herself; that would be enough to aid Kimahri outside of the cave at all.
"Oh, I almost forgot my manner. I'm Sarah of Cornelia."

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie gave a smug look as green light washed over the strange blue man, but her look faded when the wounds didn't heal. She paused, blinking. "Hey! What gives!?" she asked loudly, looking at the materia slotted in her arm, and giving it a shake. She even popped the materia out, and blew on it, trying to shine it with the palm of her glove, before putting it back in, and casting it again. Again, green light emanated, but it had no effect. "Hey! No fair! Materia ALWAYS works!" she pouted in confusion, giving the strange blue man an annoyed look. "What did you do!? You broke my materia!" she protested.
Maybe he was some weird materia proof species? She should shoot a fireball at him and see if that hurt him. That'd tell her!
...Even Yuffie quite quickly realised that was a bad idea and moved on.
She watched as the other girl got to work on trying to heal with her hands. Like some LOSER. Not using materia! Although, in this case, Yuffie supposed it made sense. "Maybe he's immune to healing magic?" she suggested. "Yeah. That must be it. Like, how some monsters are immune to fire. I bet he's immune to healing!" she said quickly. She wasn't sure how he was still alive in that case. Unless he wasn't. He did look kinda beat up. Maybe he was undead? At which point she should definitely cast that fireball.
"Name's Yuffie!" she answered when the strange woman called her 'young lady', jabbing a thumb at herself. "An' I got here using an ancient ninja technique, where you put one foot in front of the other one, and THEN you lift up your other foot, and put it in front of the first foot, making you move forwards. We call it 'walking'," she said, her voice's bubbly enthusiasm almost tempered by her teasing sarcasm.
"You dunno what a ninja is!?" Yuffie practically gasped. "A ninja is a super cool mega awesome badass who's trained in all kinds of fighting and martial arts and weapons and kicks butt!" she explained, throwing some air punches to demonstrate her enthusiasm. "And THIS is my shuriken. You can hit people with it, or, when they aren't expectin' it, THROW it, and then they're all like, 'argh, oh no, I've been shurikened to the face' and I'm like, 'HA! You didn't see THAT comin', did ya!?'" she explained cheerfully, as she flipped out her shuriken and mimed the general battle she was now imagining.
"Well, Sarah of Corntopia, it's nice to meet'cha. Like I said, I'm Yuffie, but you can call me The Great Ninja Yuffie," she said, thrusting out a hand in friendship.

The overly talkative one complained aloud as her strange green jewel did not work as expected, before trying to polish the gem as if that would increase its efficacy. She made a second attempt to heal Kimahri's wounds, but her rejuvenating magic did nothing to hasten the process. Then she had the audacity to blame the Ronso for breaking her precious 'materia', a comment that caused Kimahri to snarl in a mixture of both anger and pain.
The other woman, far more reserved and soft-spoken, had tried to assert herself as somebody that could help him, even going so far as to produce conventional medical supplies in order to establish a sense of trust. Kimahri could not allow her to get close; the exact nature of his injuries had not revealed itself to these two yet, and he could not run the risk of exposing them to whatever lurked inside his body.
As gently as he could muster with what little strength remained in his body, Kimahri lifted a hand up and tried to push the modest one aside, grunting as pain shot through his arm all the while. He stepped forward several paces, eyes fixed forward on nowhere in particular, save for the forest that surrounded them.
Yuna. Only she rested on his mind. He had to make sure she was okay. Make sure that creature was dead. Nothing else matters. He had hoped their conversations with one another would keep them distracted long enough for him to slip away.
But more pain coursed through his legs, causing both ankles to buckle until Kimahri lurched forward and fell back to the forest floor, barely having made it several feet away from the cave's mouth. The Ronso pounds a closed fist against the soft wet grass in frustration. Why did his body refuse to comply so deeply? Were his injuries really this serious?
He could imagine it now; Yuna, frowning at him, scolding him for pushing too hard against his injuries, for spurning the help of others when he actually needed it. The thought of disappointing her was more than enough to get Kimahri to settle himself down, but only because the feelings that came with it were too much for him to bear with. He simply lay there now, consumed with regret for his own stubbornness.
The two humans could try again, and with far less resistance now. But Princess Sarah of Cornelia, and the so-called 'great ninja' Yuffie, were unlikely to make any kind of headway with him, even using conventional medicines. Conversation wouldn't help either, and they were soon liable to find this detail out, in due time.

Sarah could tell this was going to be one of those days. Uncooperative on different sides but she was experienced in such. First, she had to account for the Great Ninja.
"So, Ninja are like knights, without the concept of stealth and a strong emphasis on walking...?" Sarah said this with a completely straight face, her tone mildly surprised but open minded.
"...of Cornelia, Great Ninja Yuffie." she corrects politely but if she had to sum it up... Very similar to Claire, just more martial instead of magic?
Now, onto the more difficult of the two, Kimahri. Not that he'd given a name, she had to rely on body language and reading his pained expressions. He pushed himself to strive to get out of the cave but didn't get far. Truly, he needed help but perhaps like a stubborn warrior; would not allow himself to ask or let it happen.
Sarah, would opt to try again, with a very concerned look and perhaps manners... "Please, sir, let me help you even this much. Surely, you have family or friends who want to see you again. If you refuse help now...you won't make it to back to them." an appeal to good sense and precious bonds. Friendships were important, even if she had some difficulty differentiating when acquaintances became true blue friends. She certainly wouldn't let an acquaintance suffer like this!
"Miss Great Ninja, I believe we'll need a different approach to this situation. How would someone like yourself go about aiding a...stubborn individual?" had Sarah known better, she'd have never asked, thus Yuffie was absolutely benefitting from the Princess' naivety. Whether or not she'd use it to prove herself actually great remained up in the air~
"I lack the strength to carry him on my own but my group's camp isn't too far from here. Getting out of the Headstone Forest in one piece and back to Provo would do him some good." she could only pray that between Yuffie and herself, the two had enough ingenuity to solve this particular dilemma. Well, one problem at a time, patching him up and then...soothing his mind, heart, and soul. She...did have an idea for the latter, surprisingly.
