Angeal is running out of ways to say "yes I will keep an eye on Sephiroth and be careful" lmao
For a brief moment, Angeal considered spinning the narrative about the fight between Cloud and Sephiroth. How, when viewed objectively, Cloud was clearly the more unhinged of the two combatants. But, it wasn’t the time. After speaking with Cloud himself, Angeal did understand his extremely brash and suicidal behavior – to an extent. Someone needed to keep an eye on the blonde just as much as they would insist he needed to watch Sephiroth. Strife, and his oddly fitting last name, was much more of a danger of obsessively stalking Sephiroth for a rematch than the other way around.
Instead, as Caius insisted he only wanted Angeal to be careful in the future around Sephiroth, the Soldier simply cast his gaze down to his muddy boots. Dirt smeared blue jeans and a sweaty, dirty white shirt reminded him that the day had started off so simply. Ironic, as his life completely devolved away from any type of simplicity with each passing day. How many others would be constantly reminding him that he’s defending a monster?
Genesis wouldn’t have even entertained the conversation past the first mention of Sephiroth’s name. And wouldn’t, if anyone tried to have it with him.
Still, what Caius said lingered at the forefront of his mind. You don't know for sure if this is the same Sephiroth.
Aren’t I one of the few who would know, he wanted to insist back.
Hewley sighed, taking a long drink of water as he turned his attention back to Caius, “I have no intentions of dying anytime soon. I’m one of the few people in any world who could go toe-to-toe with Sephiroth and make it out alive – that much I’m sure of.”
Caius spoke about the past and being blinded by such. Angeal did dwell on the past, sure, but hardly any of the good parts. No, what haunted him from that past life were his many, heavy sins; each one a shackle that threatened to pull him into the same shameful pit of despair that drove him to have his life ended once before. If only it was the pleasant life he used to live with his friends by his side, he would certainly sleep better.
The Soldier continued to listen quietly as Caius continued, remarking that he would have to be the one to put down Sephiroth were anything to happen and Angeal was dead. It was a very noble idea, the same kind of honorable babble Angeal himself would find himself saying in a similar situation. Could Caius fight Sephiroth and survive? It was, hopefully, a theory that would never have to be tested. But, if Cloud Strife had anything to say about it, another terrible battle could be on the horizon, and there was no predicting who would be dragged into it.
“You’re worried about me,” Hewley semi-joked, though his tone was still low and flat, “I understand, Caius. Seriously. I know we’ve all been burned by optimism in the past, but I do hope you can find it in yourself to trust me. I would never let a friendship come before the lives of innocent people.”
He certainly hadn’t let his lifelong friendship with Genesis get in the way of protecting Zack, nor the people of Midgar and Shinra when he instigated an attack. Though Angeal had struggled with a lot during that time, his honor had remained steadfast.
Angeal finished the rest of his glass of water, certainly feeling more refreshed in one way and extremely weary in another. Perhaps someday, he would stop being forced to have such heavy conversations about what Sephiroth may-or-may-not do. Briefly, he wondered if everyone wanting to speak about Sephiroth constantly was driving Genesis insane or not.
Hewley stretched his arms high, working out a dull ache as he sighed, “Did you still want to discuss the fight? Or should I let you get back to following your leads?” The conversation had already been exhausting enough, and Caius seemed to have gotten his intended point spoken. Still, if there was anything else Caius needed, Angeal was too polite not to oblige.
How long can you swallow the pain? Before it comes round again, And a shadow in the valley will lead you to them, So don't follow.

The Dragonblades
Really? One of the few people in any world who could "go toe to toe with Sephiroth and come back alive"? At least he wasn't saying he could beat Sephiroth with one hand tied behind his back and then return in time for dinner. Where the timeline of this thread was, Caius had literally just spent an entire day being exposed to Yuffie doing exactly that. Also causing his beard to be shaved off. He was thankful Angeal didn't speak of it, given the subject. It was almost a surprise Angeal recognized him at all considering that.
"Boundless confidence makes me feel so much better" Caius remarked with a long sigh. "I might be a bit less worried if not for the fact that if the worst happens, you wouldn't be the first person I have expressed concern for to respond with it and then not come back alive" he then pointed out, with a hint of tiredness in his tone. Worrying about people was hard. Especially when they were just as hard-headed and committed to their path and honor as, well, he was. Caius had promised not to rely on the bottle, but Angeal was not making it easy to refrain. For a split second he considered if he really did need STACEE's help if he was thinking about drinking in order to get through all this crap. Unfortunately, as much as he would like to. He did have a job to get to after this. And Yuffie would not be thrilled if he came back drunk. Neither would Celes.
Well maybe Celes would understand. But still wouldn't be thrilled since he was on work hours. Though, when WASN'T he on work hours?
As for fighting Sephiroth? Caius had no idea if he would survive. So he hadn't made that boast. Only assumed the responsibility of handling the situation if it came to it. If he had to kill Sephiroth to protect others, he would do what he had to. Whether he'd survive, he'd just have to find out when he got there.
"Caution is all I can ask for" Caius spoke softly at the end of it all, drowning the rest of his glass of water. "By the stories, it sounds like something made Sephiroth snap. And then it was blades out. I just don't want to see a blade indent in your back, is all. Even the mightiest can fall to the all-stopping backstab."
Poor Aerith. That back pain must have been something serious considering the size of that blade.
"It's funny. Would you believe me if I said I was looking for you? Before the fight" Caius mused aloud. "An honorable man, displaced from their home and yet, still out to help people if they can. And not afraid to fight a few monsters or bandits to do so. I went looking for you because the Dragonblades could use someone like you. There's all the dangers threatening Zephon and her people, and then there's us getting into it with a dangerous criminal syndicate. Though, I suppose you're a little busy for that right now."
Angeal asked where this was going next. He supposed there was more to cover. "I suppose your perspective of the fight itself would be good" Caius admitted quietly. "All I got out of Cloud was Sephiroth, Sephiroth, Sephiroth. Not a lot to go on, unfortunately."
For as weary as Angeal felt, Caius seemed to be exuding the same emotional exhaustion. Even without the beard (where had that gone, anyway?), the leader of the Dragonblades looked older than he should have. Honor was a burden, and everyone carried a different, exhausting, torturous weight on their backs. What else kept Caius up at night, plaguing him while he tried to sleep? How many other fights had he pledged himself to, despite everything else on his plate? What emptiness was Caius trying to fill with job after job?
All Soldiers ended up doing that, didn’t they? After living such a structured life of constant orders, having a steady stream of jobs was comforting. But, Caius was trying to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders – or so it seemed to Angeal, anyway. He knew the burden of being a hero all too well.
Even if a divine being with unlimited power was in charge of watching Sephiroth, Caius would still feel the need to worry about the situation. That was just the type of man he was.
Caius finally pivoted away from his worry, mentioning that he’d been searching for Angeal before the fight broke out in Provo. Hewley couldn’t help but raise his eyebrows in mild surprise. He figured, after how he’d disappeared in Aljana, Caius wouldn’t put much stock in working alongside him again. But, his nature must have really stuck with Caius after that venture together. Angeal offered Caius a small smile in return, “I’m honored you’d consider me a good fit for the Dragonblades. But, you’re right – I’ve got enough on my plate at the moment.”
Angeal likely would have found a comfortable home amongst the Dragonblades … if his friends were somehow not a part of this world. As much as he would like to help their noble cause, Angeal wanted to prioritize his friends. Not doing so before … Well, that’s part of what led him to his current predicament, as it was.
Caius mentioned he hadn’t gotten much out of Cloud about the fight, and Hewley wasn’t surprised a bit. He wouldn’t have gotten anything out of Cloud either, if he hadn’t been able to bully the blonde while was injured. A double edged sword, that had been, uncovering more ugly things about the future Angeal had missed. Things that may have been prevented if he hadn’t given up.
“I obviously arrived part way through the scuffle,” Angeal pivoted his mind away from lingering on Cloud’s story, “But, the battle appeared to be heading in Cloud’s favor when I made my appearance.”
He scratched his chin, trying to focus on the details of the combatants, rather than a play-by-play of the destruction, “A powerful hit from the Buster Sword should have kept just about anyone down, but Cloud was hardly phased. A sane person would have left the battle at that point – it was two on one, and we were allowing him the chance to escape. He still charged forward, so we retaliated in kind. I intended to knock him unconscious with my final strike, but that didn’t pan out.”
He should have stayed down, deep in the rubble. He should have allowed them to leave. The vision of what came next still caused Angeal to pause, when it replayed in his dreams. The blonde, beaten, bruised, bleeding, coming at them in a death march – his eyes nothing but glowing hatred.
“Cloud was hardly in any position to keep fighting. But he dragged himself out of the rubble anyway and threw himself at Sephiroth. He knew he was going to get impaled. He was betting on it. I’ve never seen a man so unhinged as he was in that moment. I’ll never forget the look in his eyes.”
Angeal turned his gaze to the bartop again, his shoulders sagging with the weight of now knowing why Cloud would do anything to kill Sephiroth. Knowing the entire story … What would he have done, if the situation were flipped?
You’d do anything to save Sephiroth. You already know that.
“He let himself be impaled on purpose. It was the only way to get close enough to Sephiroth and use his Ultima materia. It was a suicidal move. There’s not much to say after that. Sephiroth was massively injured, and I removed us both from the battlefield. I assumed Strife was dead at the time, but he’s obviously much more durable than he looks.”
Angeal looked back to Caius, his own expression weary, “I don’t know how well you know Cloud, but I can guarantee you this much – Cloud will do anything to track down Sephiroth to try and kill him again. Sephiroth doesn’t even know who he is. You may want to consider who is the more dangerous of the two right now. One wanted to flee the situation before it got out of hand, and the other was willing to destroy himself and everyone in the immediate area with one of the most powerful spells in existence.”
How long can you swallow the pain? Before it comes round again, And a shadow in the valley will lead you to them, So don't follow.

The Dragonblades
Caius hadn't forgotten that Angeal had spawned a giant wing and disappeared at the end of it all. But Caius literally had a dragon. So appearances could be deceiving. He had decided to go based off what he had seen of the honorable mercenary, though this Sephiroth business had certainly... Clouded things.
"Perhaps someday."
The offer was perhaps still on the table for a day down the road, if Caius could ever figure Hewley out. That was what he had tried to convey with that message. From there, Caius listened as Angeal gave his account of the battle. If Caius was anyone else, perhaps he'd have thought Cloud a madman himself. But he knew the man with the blonde spiky hair and large sword -- and the one in this world, at that -- to be different. Or at least he thought so. Caius wasn't entirely blind to the possibility that Cloud was a little different from the one Yuffie had met, either.
A long sigh. He'd left Yuffie with Cloud while he gathered intel. Surely they'd be long enough for him to have a drink, right?
No, unfortunately not. Odds were Yuffie would need her test to be postponed. The mention of Aerith being alive here had changed much. Caius would need to undertake the job alone. He'd need to be sober.
“I have to admit, your account is strange. You may not believe me, but the Cloud I met in Sonora was calm and composed as could be. And when a giant mechanical monstrosity began to rampage and put innocent people in danger, Cloud did not hesitate to join the fight. And yet, I cannot deny that here, he acted rashly and put innocents at risk. It was almost uncharacteristic of him" Caius admitted softly. "Yet it was clear when Sephiroth was brought up that there is a deep-seated trauma related to that man. And not just him, either. The young lady was deeply traumatized as well, primarily over the brutal impaling death of a woman named Aerith at Sephiroth's hands."
