[attr=class, bulk] The festival was beautiful, really. Celes took a little time to explore while she was there from the apple orchards to the pumpkin patches, from the market stalls to the music playing almost endlessly from the streetside stages. She smiled as she pet a goat on its snout, and she tilted her head trying to decide which of the many competition level gourds were better. There were chocobos pawing at the floor of their stalls and caravans set up to give tours of the countryside and there were so many people that Celes felt almost overwhelmed. She was dressed without her armor today. Just her jewelry, the scarves at her hip, and a jacket for the weather. She wanted to have fun. She wanted to relax.
She couldn’t.
For every smiling face she saw, she couldn’t help but wonder if disaster would end it. There were people, yes, but that only made them a bigger target if something decided to attack. She’d seen too much go wrong, and so she wandered the streets with her own agenda. If all went well, she’d have a lovely time and leave. If it didn’t…
Well. Then she’d be there to stop it, wouldn’t she?
Her first hint of danger came around noon as she drifted past what looked like an abandoned building, draped in unseasonal cobwebs, its windows shuddered where they weren’t broken. The people outside looked worried about something and so she approached them, trying her best to put on an air of confidence and authority.
”Is something wrong here?”
The small group (teenagers they looked like) jumped as she approached and stared at her nervously. Maybe she’d put on a bit too much authority.
”Oh. No, nothing wrong. Just…” The one nearest to her shifted uneasily. ”This is the haunted house. We’ve been selling tickets, but…”
”But?”
”Well, we’ve been selling tickets since this morning, but no one’s come out yet.”
Her alarm bells all went off in unison. And had they said this place was haunted?
”I’ll go in and see what’s happening. If you don’t mind.”
The teenagers looked surprised and then uncertain. ”Well. You have to buy a ticket first.”
She sighed. She didn’t know what the ticket was for, but she didn’t want to rock the boat too much. This was a simple inspection, and she had the money after all.
She bought a ticket. She got in line. The line was relatively short. She wondered if other people were as suspicious as she was.
She watched the process in front of her. It looked like the workers here were assigning people to go in at random intervals in pairs with whoever they were in line with. If she did the math right that would put her with whoever was directly behind her which was currently…no one. Would she have to wait until someone came?
Celes sighed and crossed her arms. From inside the house, she heard a strange ambience. Some kind of…music? It sounded ominous. She hoped this place wasn’t really haunted. She’d seen enough ghosts in her lifetime, thank you very much.
Another pair went in. Celes shifted forward. There was only one more couple before her, and then she’d be inside. She waited impatiently, hoping that her imagination was all that would cause a fuss today.

[attr="class","skullbody"]The Harvest Festival. An event filled with music, carnival games, and pastries. Why would the uber serious and work-oriented shinobi Mu come here on such short notice. Surely there was a task or two for the ninja here. No. The answer was one floating oni. Once again, Mu's anima companion managed to pester the Au Ra to attend a jovial event. However, Mu did not come dressed for the occasion. He dressed as he always did in the public eye: in his armor. Despite this, perhaps this was a good thing for the ninja. Ever since his training as a shinobi, Keimusho had a solemn demeanor about him. Even his clanmates often had to prompt him to unwind. A game of Doman Mahjong typically did the trick. Now Enma's had to fulfil that role. [break][break] "What is it that you intend us to do here Enma? the shinobi asks. Mu has no knowledge on what this festival would entail. He never heard of a "Harvest Festival". Doma certainly does not have any traditions quite like this. And if Keimusho didn't have a clue where to go then Enma certainly would not either. [break][break] "Don't think too hard on it boss," Enma responds. "Let's just go where the wind takes us." Soon the battered building would come into view. "Ooo. Ooo. Let's go over there!" Enma exclaims. [break][break] Mu eyes the building for a moment. Pairs of individuals are going in and no one is emerging. One individual awaited at the back of the line, seemingly waiting for a second person to show. "Enma disappear until we get until the building," Mu commands. Paying for two tickets would not have been ideal. [break][break] "No problem boss," Enma says as the oni vanished from sight. [break][break] The ninja approaches and bows to the teens present. "Greetings." [break][break] "Oh- hello," One teen responds. "This is the haunted house. We've been selling tickets all morning, but no one has left yet. You'll have to buy a ticket if you want to get in." [break][break] "Not a problem," the shinobi says, handing over the gil. [break][break] The shinobi then approaches the woman who remains in line, giving a bow. "It seems you have been in this line a while. Shall we enter together?"
[attr=class, bulk] Just when she was starting to wonder what would happen if she didn’t have a partner, someone came up in the line behind her. It was a strange someone, certainly with white hair and heavy armor though what struck her was the sheer size of them. Celes was not a short woman by any means, but this man (she thought it was a man?) dwarfed her by comparison. She looked up at him, eyebrows raised.
”Oh. Yes. I think they’re having us go through in pairs.” Just as she said it, the couple in front of them was ushered inside, and Celes shifted forward to the next place in line. She had a lot of questions about her new partner starting with why he was wearing so much armor. The cut of it reminded her somehow of Shadow. It was not a comforting comparison.
The worker at the front booth asked them for their tickets, and Celes handed hers over. With that done, they went on about the rules of the “haunted house.” The actors wouldn’t touch them and they couldn’t touch the actors. That seemed…strange.
Was this some kind of theatrical production?
”I don’t really know what to expect,” she said, glancing at the strange man beside her. Now that she was looking at him closer, she could make out the strange symbols painted onto his armor and noticed the sheathed sword at his waist. She looked up past his face mask to find red eyes and…
Wait, were those horns.
She stared at him, dumbstruck, as her mind tried to catch up to her. He wasn’t human, that was for sure. As for what exactly he was, the only thing she could think of was…
”I’m sorry. Are you an esper?” She didn’t have time to question whether or not she was being rude. The words fell out of her mouth on their own accord, driven by shock and curiosity. ”It’s just…you look like someone I know.”

[attr="class","skullbody"] "I don’t really know what to expect,” the woman said. "I do not either. Hopefully it is not literally haunted by spirits as they may claim," the shinobi responds. He has had enough of a fill of spirits from his one instance in Headstone Forest. [break][break] ”I’m sorry. Are you an esper? It’s just…you look like someone I know.” the woman says. "An... esper? I'm afraid not. I am actually unfamiliar with the term," the shinobi responds. It wouldn't be the first time that someone would question what he was if they were observant enough to tell that his horns and tail weren't apart of his armor. It wasn't too surprising, given that he did not encounter any other Au Ra in this world. It was clear that Au Ra simply didn't exist here and apparently don't in many of the other Outlander worlds. Though was struck him was the comment that he bears a similarity to someone she knew. "Would this person in question be from a land called Doma by chance?" He doubted it, given that many people from his world would recognize the Hingan character for Doma or at least recognize that the symbol was from the far east. However, if there were any other Domans in the world, he just had to know. [break][break] "Questions aside, shall we exchange names before we enter this supposedly haunted place? I go by the name Mu."
[attr=class, bulk] The man in front of her was not an esper. That in itself made her feel a little silly. It had been an insensitive question, hadn’t it? She’d been so caught up in her own shock that she’d asked his race before she’d even asked his name. Still, she felt something sink at his answer. Here was yet another thing held over her head to remind her of home only to be stolen away.
Or was it?
”D-Doma?” she repeated, staring at him. ”Well, no. The person I was thinking of wasn’t from there, but are you really from-?”Doma. The kingdom that had been besieged and poisoned for sadistic dreams of conquest. Doma. The city she’d been unable to save.
She suddenly felt uncomfortable telling him her name.
”It’s nice to meet you,” she said as the man, Mu, introduced himself. Would he have heard of her if she didn’t use her full name? Would he make the connection with a general from the empire which had eradicated his people?
”I’m Celes,” she said simply, watching what she could see of his face for a response. His nose and mouth were covered by some kind of mask so she watched his eyes instead. Was there any recognition there? Repulsion? Suspicion?
Cyan hadn’t held her past allegiances against her after a while. They’d gotten to know each other, after all, and there had always been a great threat to fight against, but that could not be said of another survivor. She wanted desperately to ask how he’d escaped, but that was far more forward than asking if he was an esper. It must have been a painful memory.
She tore her gaze away and looked at the house instead. ”I really hope it’s not actually haunted. I’ve never liked dealing with ghosts.” She glanced back at the man beside her. Mu was almost intimidating with his towering stance and heavy armor. She wondered if he was really as big as he looked or if the platemail added to the effect.
The worker at the door called them forward and, in a rather bored tone, went over the rules again. They were all very concerned with touching and being touched, weren’t they? With that, the worker rang a bell and ushered them inside. Celes glanced at Mu with a nervous smile. ”Well. I suppose we ought to give it a try,” she said. Then she stepped over the threshold towards whatever was waiting within.

[attr="class","skullbody"]The woman's response indicated that she perhaps was familiar with Doma after all. She then introduced herself as Celes. Mu would analyze her closely. He has heard that name before from when he first met Caius. She certainly fits the description that Caius gave to him. [break][break] "Celes... You wouldn't happen to be Celes Chere of the Dragonblades would you?" the shinobi responds. If that was the case did that mean that one of the leaders of the Dragonblades was potentially from the same world as Mu was? And if so where? Othard and Hingashi were highly unlikely given her manner of dress and lack of Far Eastern gestures. Garlemald also was unlikely given that she clearly was not a Garlean. So that only left Eorzea. [break][break] The time of speculation would halt as the worker would signal them to go inside. "Well. I suppose we ought to give it a try," Celes says. "Indeed," Mu responds. "I'm sure that it can't be any worse than the Headstone Forest." [break][break] With that said, Mu steps into the building unsure of what to expect of a haunted house. "Alright, Enma you may now show yourself," Mu says. [break][break] "Wow boss it's so dark in here!" The floating oni says as takes form once again. The screams of the other guests were evident. "I don't think the people here like it very much in the dark." [break][break] The shinobi nods, "Indeed. Perhaps it is an indication of what you signed up for." [break][break] "Ooooo. How ominous. But I'm a big boy, I can handle it!" Enma shouts. [break][break] The ninja looks over at Celes. "I hope you don't mind the sudden appearance of my friend here. This is my companion Enma."
[attr=class, bulk] As it happened, the strange horned man did know her. Just not as she expected him to. ”The Dragonblades? Well…Yes, I am. Have you met Caius?” With that connection made, it was only one small step to put the pieces fully together. She didn’t know why she hadn’t seen it before. ”Mu…That wouldn’t be the same Mu that fought the Kraken, would it?” Her eyes brightened. ”Why, I’ve heard all about you! Funny running into each other here of all places, isn’t it?”
It really was. Funnier still that they’d never somehow crossed paths at the Wyvern’s Rest. Then again, from what Caius had said, Mu was something of the quieter, more solitary type. Still, Caius had trusted the ninja (he’d called Mu a ninja, hadn’t he?) with his life, and that was more than enough for Celes. Usually.
They walked inside the dreadful place together, and it was almost instantly dark. It took Celes a moment for her eyes to adjust to the sudden and impenetrable gloom. With the door creaking closed behind them, they were left with nothing but heavily curtained windows and a few dimly flickering candles to guide them. Celes took a deep breath, smelling dust and old wood before she blinked a little harder and tried to peer into the depths of this place. It was…old. Or at least it seemed that way. They were in some kind of cramped hallway that led only forwards. It was a strange design for a house (wasn’t there supposed to be an entrance hall or something?) but then she supposed this wasn’t the average house, was it? Most houses didn’t require an entry fee to simply walk into.
Mu, at least, didn’t seem particularly perturbed. He didn’t seem to be talking to her either, referring instead to someone named “Enma.” Celes was about to ask who he meant before something popped into existence over his shoulder and Celes stiffened, taking a step back on reflex. She stared at it as it trilled about the darkness around them. Deeper in the heart of the house, someone screamed. It was not a pleasant combination.
”Is that…?” Celes’ only reference point for the spirit in front of her was an esper, but seeing as Mu had no idea what that was, she closed her mouth, opened it again, and asked, ”What is that?”
Apparently its name was in fact Enma. But that didn’t really answer her question, did it?
”Your companion,” she repeated. Her eyes flicked from Mu to the goblin-faced thing that floated behind him. ”I...well…” What was she supposed to say to that? ”I don’t mind. It’s just rather strange is all.”
That was an understatement.
”To tell the truth, Caius and I are both here on Dragonblades business. Nothing official, but this festival is an obvious target and we wanted to make sure we were here in case there was trouble. I’ve heard no one’s left this house yet. I wonder if it’s actually haunted…”
There was a bang, another shriek, and then it faded into the strange ambience of the place full of the sounds of drafty windows and floorboards creaking.
In front of her was a tight corridor of wall-mounted candles and peeling wallpaper. At the end of the hall was a portrait that glowered at her disapprovingly, and beyond that, a tight turn into the unknown. Celes steeled herself and took the lead in front of Mu. ”There’s only one way to find out, I suppose.”

[attr="class","skullbody"]The woman would confirm that she was indeed the Dragonblades's Celes Chere and as Mu introduced himself, it was clear that she recognized his name as well. "Mu…That wouldn’t be the same Mu that fought the Kraken, would it?” she asks. [break][break] "It is indeed," the shinobi responds. "I'm sure Caius told you how hectic that battle was. It's a mystery as to how we haven't made each other's acquaintance sooner." [break][break] Enma sudden appearance understandably caused Celes to be perplexed as she blurts out, "What is that?" Even after introducing him, Enma is probably the least normal thing in the room. The Dragonblade would say she's fine with the oni's presence, but that she still found him to be strange. "That's understandable," Mu responds. "I still question what exactly Enma is to this day." "That's quite a fair assessment to make boss," Enma responds as he begins to flex his aetherial muscles. "It's hard for everyone to understand a marvel of this world like me." "Try to ignore his boasting. He seems full of himself, but he means well," Mu says. [break][break] Celes would inform the shinobi that she and Caius were here on Dragonblade's business. "I see. I wish I could say the same. Admittedly Enma was the one who pestered me to bring me here." Mu says. "And now you get to explore a haunted house! Isn't this exciting boss?" Enma shouts. [break][break] Ignoring the oni, the shinobi would move onward with the Dragonblade's general. A simple glimpse into the next room would reveal that there were webs in the corners. The furniture was worn, but that wasn't the oddest thing about it. The chairs and the tables rocked from side to side, so much so that the legs of the furniture were practically stomping the floor. Was this a sign that this place really haunted or was this just some type of magic being cast on the furniture?
[attr=class, bulk] So even Mu didn’t know what the thing floating over his shoulder was. That was…troubling. Still, he didn’t seem to mind the horned goblin creature looming over him like a shadow so Celes tried not to either. She really tried, but how on earth was she supposed to feel comfortable with that thing in her peripheral vision?
”Are the two of you…close?” she asked because she couldn’t think of anything else to ask. Apparently Mu was only here because the goblin had wanted to come. Why had the goblin wanted to come? Did it have some particular love of apples and gourds?
Celes was shaken. She hated to admit it, but that thing had her guard thrown and they hadn’t even gone five steps inside the place yet. Celes took a deep breath and tried to center herself again. She had a job to do after all.
They moved on. The next room was, well, calling it a room felt a little too charitable. It was a small, square, closet-like space that connected the two hallways on either side. There were no windows and there were no doors, just the flickering candles set into their holders on the walls. It was eerie, really, and Celes became suddenly aware of just how much space there was to hide in a place like this. The space might not have been large, but it was crammed full of tarnished furniture that looked to be at least a hundred years old.
There was a slow creaking sound as they approached that grew louder, clacking again and again in an increasingly intense rhythm. The table was…moving?
Celes frowned, glanced at Mu, and then cautiously approached. She felt suddenly exposed without her armor. It was just her in her yellow jacket with her hair pulled back and a sword at her waist, but if something came at her from behind…
It happened so quickly that she didn’t process it at first. There was the creak of a floorboard, the flash of movement to her right and then a horrible, gut-wrenching scream and she shrieked and twisted herself to face a figure with graying skin, hollowed cheeks, and pale eyes far, far too close-
And she punched it.
She punched it straight in the nose.
The ghastly wailing cut off abruptly into a sharp curse as the figure stumbled back, hand slapped to its face as though trying to quell the river of blood streaking from its nose and down its chin. Staggered like that, Celes now saw that it wasn’t a ghost, but a man. Or a teenage boy, rather. Celes drew herself up, panic turning quickly to indignation.
”Why did you sneak up on me?” she asked, and the boy gave a pained moan and said something that she couldn’t make out through his nasal blubbering. Celes glanced sharply at Mu and then back at the boy. ”Well I hope you’ve learned a lesson!”

[attr="class","skullbody"]Celes wished to know if Mu was close to Enma. "Enma has never left my side since we first came into acquaintance with one another," he says. Not that it was possible for the Anima to do so anyway, unless the shinobi left his sword elsewhere. Though that would not be in Enma's control either. At times Mu wondered why the oni was fine with such an arrangement. Perhaps that is just in the nature of the Anima weapons to want to be at the side of whoever they were created for. Not that he knew any other Anima weapons to compare Enma to. "I'd say that me and Enma are pretty close," he admits. [break][break] It was already clear to the shinobi that Celes was not particularly fond of this situation, with this supposedly haunted house and Enma's presence on top of it. But the nail in that coffin would soon come. As the floorboard's creaked it was clear that something was coming for them. Whatever it was it wasn't doing a great job of concealing its steps. The Dragonblade also noticed this as she greeted it with a punch to its nose or rather his nose. It definitely was no ghost or anything of the sort. It was a teenage boy. Honestly Mu felt a little bad for the kid. Just a little. His remorse was dampened due to the looming issue of people not emerging from the house. [break][break] The shinobi turned to the teen and sighed. "So, do you know why no one has been coming out this house?" The boy looked up only to see Enma floating above his shoulder. The teen's eyes widened at the sight of the oni, yet despite this he tried his best to mutter a response. Unfortunately, it was all unintelligible. Celes really did a number on him. The shinobi turns to Celes. "Do you happen to know any spells that can heal him? Perhaps he has some answers about what's going on in this house?"
