[attr=class, bulk] Okay, so first things first, they moved to a more secure location. That was good. It was really just a dim, dark closet, but probably no one was listening so that was smart enough. Looked like a storage room or something. Lots of boxes. Probably lots of spiders. He hoped there weren’t lots of spiders. But that didn’t really matter because his head was still spinning from what Caius had said right before then as they were heading here in the first place.
”A different…point?”
Yeah, that’d take some explaining, thanks.
”Sorry, I uh. Don’t understand.” That was an understatement. ”But the war with Niflheim…I mean, I guess it ended when Niflheim got run over with daemons. But. That’s a weird way to say it. Lucis is definitely not at peace, and-”
Consciousnesses. Caius had definitely said something about a consciousness and his body running around? Whatever that meant, Prompto had no idea.
”Look, I don’t think I’m existing in two places at once. That…doesn’t sound right. Because I’m here. Right here. Not back in Lucis. Or, er. Maybe you’ve got the wrong guy?”
Because from here, what Caius was saying sounded crazy. And he couldn’t be locked in a closet with a crazy guy, right?
”I, uh. I’m pretty sure I’ve got a lot to worry about back home actually. See, Noctis went missing. And we were still in Niflheim and Ardyn was nowhere to be seen and daemons were overrunning everything and we hadn’t seen the sun in a few days so there was that going on and-”
Wait, why was he explaining this again?
”I don’t know how much sense that made. But point is, things were real serious, and I don’t know what you’re talking about. So.” Prompto waved his arms in a gesture that could have meant anything. ”You know.”
He doubted Caius knew because Prompto himself didn’t know. He just couldn’t quite let all that slide without saying something and now that something had been said. A horrible thought struck him that maybe Caius wasn’t who he said he was at all. Maybe he was just a crazy guy pretending to be a Glaive. But then he remembered that Caius had summoned his really cool sword for him so that struck that theory off the table. So he either knew what he was talking about and Prompto was too stupid to follow or he was a crazy Glaive. Because only Glaives and Crownsguard could summon weapons if they weren’t kings of Lucis and-
Wait, they’d come into this closet for a reason, right? Best to stay on track.
”I, uh. Yeah. The prison looked pretty maximumly secured. I don’t know what happened. Just that they’re there. I didn’t see any signs or anything either. It was out in the middle of nowhere.” He paused, trying to remember what he’d seen. ”I think there was a train station nearby. Then a road leading to it. But…no signs.”
That was creepy now that he thought about it. And it did not bode well.
”Cissnei,” he repeated to himself. ”Cissnei. Got it.” He’d repeat that name again and again so he wouldn’t forget. It was a long way from here to Sonora so he’d have to remember it for even longer. But this time he knew it was important so he thought he could handle it.
”I don’t know what she’d use against me,” he said. ”I mean, I’m not that complicated. You’re serious about the bullet in the head thing though?”
He didn’t like the sound of that. Though a woman with a gun did sound pretty cool.
And kind of hot.
Focus, Prompto.
”I don’t usually drink much. But I mean, it’d be rude not to get drinks if she asked me, right? You think she’d ask me?”
His brain felt like an overheated computer making whirring noises. He tried to get it back on track. He tried really hard.
”Er. But yeah. I’ll get on that. I can look for her. Sounds like a real good…lead.”
Words were hard at the moment. Probably because of his whirring brain. He never liked when it did that.
”Thanks, man. For helping out. And pointing me towards this Cissnei person. And, uh. Looking for other people to help, I guess.” Prompto took a deep breath in and out like Ignis had taught him. He really needed time to reboot. ”I’m, uh. Real tired. You wouldn’t happen to have a place I could stay? Or a couch to crash on? I don’t actually have any money right now so…”

The Dragonblades
Yeah, his being sus made sense. He supposed he would be suspicious too in these circumstances. Caius sighed and rubbed his temples. Best get this out of the way, he thought. It’d just cause undue stress and complications otherwise. “Trust me. I am fully aware this whole thing sounds ridiculous and horribly convoluted. I’m still trying to wrap my head around it myself, which is why this is just a theory” he pointed out with a sigh. He’d have to explain it more simply, he figured. In a way that was easier to understand. Step by step.
“Here’s what I do know. Like you, I was yanked from Lucis out of nowhere. I’ve been here a few years, and I’ve met so many out-realmers I’m convinced they’re half the population. On the surface that makes sense enough, this place is kidnapping people from what could be different lands, or different worlds entirely. Considering few have even heard of Lucis and the Astrals aren’t gods here, more likely the latter. Which is weird but… Still, you know. Something you can piece together. But the weirdest thing is that His Majesty and his retinue having their little adventure in the enemy capital and Noctis going missing happened already. Years ago. Yet here you are, looking younger than I am, something that should be impossible might I add. And telling me that you were yanked from Lucis during that adventure. But for me, your retinue came back, minus Noctis. He returns later, stronger than ever, defeats Adagium, otherwise known as Ardyn and frees us of the starscourge and the daemons. You were part of that, and so were Gladiolus and Ignis. As far as I knew, your little voyage to another world never happened. Same goes for your friends. None of them could plausibly be here. Then during the rebuilding process, I get sent here, and a few years later here you all are.”
He decided to leave out the part where he’d already met a disoriented and blinded Ignis and how confusing that was. This kid was confused enough as-is.
“The strange thing is you’re not the only Lucians I’ve met. I’ve met civilians who were plucked just as we were, though I didn’t get to know any of them all that well. But some of them were people who should have been ten years older than they were; or who should have been long dead. Some even claimed to be present during the coronation of the Founder King. None of it makes sense, so either I’m hallucinating and you’re not real, or something really weird is going on. My first thought was different timelines. It made sense, as people are being yanked from different points in history. But there’s just so many out-worlders, and none who actually know each other remember their friends going missing at any point. So that would imply a different timeline for every missing person, which just sounds… Impossible. It’d probably break the universe or something, right? So in summary, current theory is some kind of duplication.”
He pinched the bridge of his nose. Thinking about all of this made his head hurt. He was a mercenary, not a scientist. “And to sum up this whole weird world crap… You have nothing to worry about there. Everything turned out ok. Best thing to do is focus on the future. Mainly, getting out your friends and figuring out a survival plan for your time here.”
Hopefully that would suffice for the time being. So came said affairs for the future. “Yes. I know a cold killer when I see one” he brought up when Prompto asked about Cissnei and if he was serious. He was very serious. Perhaps a bit paranoid after ten years in the Darkness, but he had been given reason to be suspicious. And that was enough for him. And Caius knew a thing or two about cold-blooded killers, didn't he?
But the way he was talking, with him asking if he was serious, asking about politeness, and then finally his question about if she’d actually ask him?
Oh for god’s sake.
Caius was no expert on romantic affairs but even he could read Prompto a mile away. The mercenary took a deep breath to preserve his patience. “If she does? You watch her pour it. You smell it, and check for contaminants. Even a strong drink can’t mask it entirely” he advised him, because Prompto was 100% beginning to come off as the type who would fall for the ‘ol poisoned drink. He’d done all he could, so hopefully Prompto wouldn’t get himself killed before they could get to this prison. Though it seemed he hadn’t made arrangements for sleep either, so… Maybe he shouldn’t get his hopes up.
“Yeah. We should have a room to spare. You’re free to crash here. If you see an empty room, take it. Just make sure to clean it after for the next person. It’s not a perfect arrangement by any means, but it’ll do for now.”

I can't choose where I came from, but I can choose where I'm going

[attr=class, bulk] Prompto had no idea what Caius was talking about. Caius seemed to talk like maybe he should have an idea what he was talking about (he sure was talking a lot without taking questions) but Prompto didn’t. He just stared at him, looking increasingly horrified the longer this went on. He didn’t like when he couldn’t keep up with a conversation. Usually it was Prompto’s brain that was chugging along ahead of everyone else. But sometimes Prompto would get caught up on something real early, a question he just had to ask, and everything after that turned into a blur until he got the chance to ask it.
That question, in this case, was ’Wait, a few YEARS?’
Then another one, ’What are out-realmers?’
’Why are they half the population?’
’What happened with Noctis?’
’What’s a retinue?’
And then the questions were piled so high on top of each other that he stopped hearing Caius entirely. He just stared.
And stared.
As Caius talked.
He wondered if he should interrupt and get his questions out that way, but Caius seemed like a busy man who wanted to get all this out on the table at once, and Prompto was too grateful for his help to want to annoy him. He really did sound crazy though. Crazy or like…
Wait, hold on.
”Oh, you’re from the future!” He didn’t mean to interrupt him. He didn’t know what Caius had been saying before he’d interrupted. He was just so happy to finally understand something that it burst out of him on its own. ”That’s like…wow, okay. That’s like real sci-fi. I guess I’ve seen crazier though. LIke what even is this? And then there was that guy I met who had an adventurer’s guild or something? So I’m open to just about anything right now.”
Prompto rubbed his neck. ”Ah man. The future,” he said to himself before looking back at Caius. ”What am I like in the future? I mean, like, have we met? Or…?” He doubted Caius would have heard about him otherwise. Prompto wasn’t somebody who was about to make a name for himself.
Now that he’d gotten that out of the way, a lot more of what Caius had said started to seep in through the cracks. Caius’ current theory was ‘some kind of duplication.’
”I mean, have you considered a multiverse? Theoretically infinite timelines is like a total thing, you know? So maybe in your timeline everything worked out, but my timeline doesn’t have a Prompto anymore and-” And that would change things how? ”And…maybe that’ll make things worse…somehow?”
Real great argument there.
”A-anyway! I think it’s more likely than your idea because I know I’m not a hollow copy. I’m real. I’m existing. ’I think therefore I am,’ you know? And if there was another Prompto back where I left then he’d probably be real and existing too because otherwise how would he do stuff? I don’t know. Just sounds more multiverse-ish to me. But I’m no theoretical physicist.”
He shrugged. That was enough thinking for today.
Caius went on with his advice, and Prompto wondered why this lady would even want to poison him. Capacity was one thing. Motive was another. Prompto didn’t really have much to give her probably. He was broke. Noctis wasn’t here. That was about all the value he could think up for himself. But he’d try to watch his drink, he guessed. That was always a good thing to do at a bar anyway.
”You’ve got a free room? You mean it? Ah thanks, man!” Prompto stretched out his arms over his shoulders, yawning. ”I’m beat. Do you know how far it is from here to Provo? Wish I’d had the money for an airship, but eh. Walking’s fine too. Though it’s way less fun alone.”
Everything was.
”And uh. Thanks. For helping me. I know it’s a lot…”

The Dragonblades
Well, he tried. He had figured that slowing it down and explaining what he knew step by step would help. And it did, sort of. Prompto at least seemed to get that he was from a different point in time. But then he suggested multiverse theory, which Caius had mentioned was his previous theory, and seemed stuck on that. And he actually was right that it was a multiverse to some extent. What made him suspicious was just how far that had been stretched. Still, unfortunately this made Prompto figure out that things could be different in his timeline, which was also true, and well… There went the plan to ease his anxieties even a little bit.
“I have. It definitely is a multiverse in some respect. I’ve met past versions of Lucians before, like you” he agreed with an affirmative nod, trying to keep it simple if he could. “Your friend, you mentioned he is also not from here but didn’t say he was from our world. I’ve met people like that here a lot. My co-leader, Celes, she is from somewhere that doesn’t have a Lucis, or even the Astrals. She was sent here too, and has run into people from that same place, but “past” and “future” versions like how I am to you, and you to me. If that makes sense. That’s part of what the Dragonblades do, we’ve given work to a lot of these displaced people" he then explained, making sure to stop before he went too long. He’d be wasting his breath otherwise. So how to sum up his point? Hmm…
“When I said they’re like half the population, I wasn’t exaggerating either. Hundreds to thousands of people like us, different timelines for each one. That’s a really crowded multiverse if you include say, where Celes came from. Though I’ve yet to meet anyone from one where people they knew suddenly disappeared.”
Thus why Caius had considered other possibilities. While multiverse theory definitely played a factor, he had yet to see evidence that any timeline had been affected by their absence. And with that many split timelines, wouldn’t that break the fabric of the universe or something? It just seemed too far fetched, even by Zephon logic.
“We haven’t met, though I know you by reputation. You’re one of the King’s right hands in my… Time” he responded to the other question, deciding to go with being “from the future” for this instance. As far as the contact goes, well… He had learned in the ten years of hell that Ardyn had created, that it didn’t take much for someone to find a motive if they had a certain disposition. Either way, at least Prompto had a place to stay the night, so he didn’t have to worry about the kid getting killed in some street somewhere before they could break the King’s men out. “It’s about a day and a half by chocobo, on foot might take longer. I’ll spot you a rental.”
He thanked him, Caius shook his head.
"I may no longer wear the uniform, but I swore an oath to the King. It's the least I can do."

[attr=class, bulk] Huh. Prompto didn’t know what to expect, but he kind of liked Caius agreeing with him on his theories. ’Definitely a multiverse’ was better than ’I don’t know about that,’ or even ’What’s a multiverse?’ Gladio probably would have just called him a nerd. This was…kinda nice.
”Yeah, I know what you mean about people from other places. I met Yuna, remember?” And that had been a weird conversation. Where she was from, dead people didn’t stay dead, and they turned into monster ghosts if you didn’t do something about it. That sounded like a terrible place to live.
”And Alex. That guy I left behind? He said he’s from somewhere else, but…He also seemed really sure that he’d met Noctis before which is like…what? And not here either. I mean where he’s from. They’re apparently like best friends or whatever. It was weird.”
He didn’t like Alex much.
”Anyway, different timelines are pretty cool. And different points from that timeline. I’ll have to think about that.” He rubbed the back of his neck uneasily. ”Wait, I have a reputation?” he asked followed by, ”Noct’s right hand?”
He felt something bloom inside him then, all bright and sunny and hopeful. Right hand. That meant…closest ally. His confidant. The person who stood by his side no matter what. That was supposed to be Gladio or Ignis. They’d trained for it their whole lives while Prompto was just…some kid with a gun. But in Caius’ timeline, at least, that had been him anyway.
”Wow,” he said softly. He didn’t want to dwell on it too much. After all, he didn’t know what the difference was between Caius’ time and his own. Maybe it wouldn’t happen in his future and even if it could have happened, maybe it wouldn’t if he knew about it and tried to make it a thing. Prompto certainly couldn’t think of a way that it could happen, but just hearing it like that…
Nope. He wouldn’t let himself think about it too hard. Even a daydream might mess things up somehow. He’d seen enough movies about time travel to know that.
”You’ll really…get me a chocobo?” Prompto said, peeking up at him. ”Wow, thanks! I, uh. Don’t know what to say.”
Just because he didn’t know what to say didn’t mean he didn’t have plenty of words anyway.
”Seriously. Once this is over, if there’s anything you need, I owe you like. So much. I’ll do whatever jobs you want. Or…if you need some guns on something important to you! I’ll be there. For real. So. Thanks.”

The Dragonblades
“Aye, I see she told you. Celes, Yuna and I are all from different worlds with their own technology, people and gods” Caius responded with Prompto brought up Yuna, though quirked a brow when he brought up Alex. “He’s not from our world, is he? I knew he was an acquaintance of His Majesty, but I wasn’t aware of that part” he admitted with a shrug. Ok, maybe he remembered Alex at least a little bit. He didn’t really know him well, though.
Prompto perked up when Caius brought up his status in his timeline. “His retinue who fought alongside him at the head of the Kingsglaive to defeat the Starscourge, became very important fixtures of Lucis in its time of rebuilding. His left and right hands were yourself, and Ignis Scienta. His commander, Gladiolus Amacita, like his father before him. I never met any of them, though. They were always quite busy. We all were.”
He gave a bittersweet smile. “I never had much of a chance to earn that kind of reputation myself. I was felled stopping an assassination attempt on His Majesty and ended up here. Or, I’m pretty sure I died anyway. I certainly felt like I was dying. And that wound was pretty bad. It was gone when I woke up though, weirdly enough. Have you ever had a hole in your chest just magically disappear? It’s weird.”
Prompto thanked him for supplying a rental, and continued to lavish thanks and promises to pay him back after. He shook his head. “I’ll keep your offer in mind, and it is appreciated. But-”
“Mr. Caius?”
Tomoe would peek her head in as she spoke up.
“Tomoe, I’ll be with you shortly. We’re just wrapping up. Can you see if there are any beds available for our friend?”
“Oh! Yes, sir. But there is a letter for you Caius, sir.”
“I’ll look into it when I have time, thank you for letting me know” he spoke as he would turn back to Prompto. Before he could speak though, Tomoe would speak up again.
“It has the King’s seal, sir. King Hremit, I mean. I would read it as soon as you can.”
He quirked a brow at that, but nodded his head.
“Understood. Leave it on the desk, I’ll take care of it shortly.”
He cleared his throat as he addressed Prompto once more.
“I wouldn’t worry about any debts to me. All I ask is that if His Majesty ever finds himself here. No matter what form he may take. Make sure he’s safe. That is the only favor I ask of you in return.”

I can't choose where I came from, but I can choose where I'm going
[attr=class,lyric1]gonna keep on keeping on the only

[attr=class, bulk] Caius told him a story. It was about him and Noctis and Ignis and Gladio. He didn’t really understand it (how did someone defeat the Starscourge, anyway?) but he liked hearing about it nonetheless. It was like something out of a fairytale or maybe something that he might have hoped for not so long ago. Him, Ignis, and Gladio all working with Noctis to make Lucis the best it could be forever. That’s about all he heard out of the story, and that’s all he cared to take with him.
Caius’ story about himself was…a bit weirder.
”Uh…Nope! Can’t say I have.” He hadn’t had a “hole in his chest” disappear, that was. He’d had bullet wounds and stab wounds and burn wounds and all other kinds of wounds magically disappear though. Noctis’ potions were great. But when he heard about a “hole in his chest” he thought like a literal big old hole. Like a cannonball had plowed straight through some poor guy and you could reach your hand through and see it on the other side. That kind of hole.
He’d never had that healed. He was pretty sure he’d just die.
”I know what you mean about waking up after you feel like you’re dying though. Have you ever been on the other end of a phoenix down? Total lifesavers, let me tell you!”
Somehow Prompto got the feeling that he was missing the point.
Before he could go too far off topic, they were mercifully interrupted by the receptionist. He didn’t know what the girl thought, finding them in a closet like this. They weren’t doing anything weird when she opened the door or anything so maybe she got the right idea that they were talking secrets. Nowhere better to talk secrets than a closet. Though maybe in hindsight they should have locked the door behind them. Did the closet even have a lock? That would be kind of weird, right?
Focus, Prompto.
They were talking about a letter. From a king? Prompto’s heart jumped in his chest before the receptionist clarified that it was from Torensten’s king which made a lot more sense. Man, was she cute.
He smiled at her, leaning back on his heels all casual like. She gave him an uncertain look, but didn’t say anything.
Caius cleared his throat. Oh right. They were talking important stuff, weren’t they?
”I…You want me to look after Noct?” Prompto asked. ”Well yeah! Of course! I said I would, and I’d do it anyway because, you know, we’re friends. He’s my best friend. I’d stick with him no matter what.” He rubbed his neck. ”So…since I’d do that anyway just, you know. If you need anything. You can ask, yeah?”
Yeah.
”Well, uh. You can go do your letter thing! I’ll find somewhere and crash. No need to worry about me! Just gonna…do my own thing. Probably take a nap. Man, am I tired!” He gave a nervous laugh. Why did he suddenly feel like he wasn’t doing this right?

The Dragonblades
“I have been, many times. Not all the daemons disappeared right away, and some Imperial dissidents remained. But not all wounds can be healed by a Phoenix Down.”
If they could, almost nobody would die. And Caius had a feeling that he may well have had a wound that a Phoenix Down couldn’t fix. But he supposed he would never know. There was no way to go home and find out, and to be honest? Considering the likelihood, it probably wasn’t something he should want to explore to begin with. He was here now. That was what was important. Not to mention the other important thing of ensuring that given the likelihood that a version of Noctis would show up here, preparations should be made to keep the man safe. While Caius was technically no longer Kingsglaive, he still felt duty-bound to his former liege, no matter what form he may take.
Prompto agreed to do so, insisting he would have anyway. Good. This Prompto was as loyal to the King as the version from his timeline was. That was a load off his shoulders. Prompto was awkward, but he had to have some capability if he was able to get here from Sonora of all places. And he didn’t seem to have any sort of entourage to escort him, or the gil to get him here via a safer method such as an airship.
Caius nodded in affirmative. “Thank you” he responded to both that, and to Prompto insisting that if he needed a hand, he would ask. “Don’t hesitate to return if you run into trouble. We shared a creed once, you have help here should you ever require it.”
He motioned for him to follow Tomoe, so he could get his nap. He didn’t want to keep him longer. Caius meanwhile, gingerly made his way back to the desk. Finding the letter on the desk, he quickly opened it and read it over. A read through the contents caused his eyebrows to nearly shoot up and off his head.
