The Dragonglaive
The storm was over. The Kraken had been defeated by the efforts of the Dragonblades and their associates, as well as those who had come together to ward away the storms and keep pirates from trying to take advantage of the storm-bound ships. Tales of the kraken and temples and ghost ships travelled throughout all of Torensten in a single night, but that wasn't the biggest surprise to come out of all of this. It had begun when Caius, Sabin and Keimusho had arrived with the remaining sailors and Vordun. The dragon was exhausted after powering through the storm to get them back to shore, but Caius had been surprised to find the King himself awaiting them at the shore. Vordun was too tired to defend himself, and when spears had been drawn on the drake, Caius had immediately stepped in front of Vordun and drawn his sword. It didn't matter that he had only managed to recover a bit of magic in the trip back, Caius would defend Vordun with his life.
But it wasn't needed. King Hremit had waved off his soldiers, recognizing that Vordun had been the one pulling the sailors to safety. It didn't take long for it to be cleared up, as while they were still flabbergasted by Vordun's presence, the sailors quickly stuck up for the lizard who had saved their lives. The story was quickly told of how they had felled the Kraken and had only been saved by the quick thinking of Caius, the efforts of Mu and Sabin and then the strength of will that possessed the drake to get them to shore. Then there was sorrow, as the ones who didn't make it were mourned by their families and fellow sailors alike.
But the surprises did not end there. King Hremit approached the two Dragonblades and Mu to ask them to attend a ceremony within the next few mornings once the people were safe. The rain had already settled down and all that was left was to save anyone who might have gotten caught up in all of it. But to Caius' surprise, Hremit himself requested that "this time", a wording that puzzled Caius, he should bring Vordun to be honored along with them. It seemed that in the midst of their talks and mourning, Hremit had met with the Council of Torensten and quickly made a decision regarding Vordun.
The drake was now under Torensten's protection, by law. The dragon was not to be harmed under any circumstances. While Torensten had a terrible history with dragons after the attack that had devastated the city all those years ago, Vordun had distinguished himself as a hero just as much as the others, and was the main reason that so many had survived this horrible night. If Torensten was to uphold its traditions, then even a drake should be allowed to be celebrated for its accomplishments in service to the Torensten Dukedom.
It was quite the surprise, to say the least. But it took a burden off Caius' shoulders as well. The mercenary no longer had to shadow Vordun's existence. Not that he could have anyway considering the sailors had all seen him. But to know that it had gone this well had removed a wall of stress from Caius' mind. While the people of Torensten would still be wary of him, Vordun had distinguished himself and no longer needed to hide like a monster.
Vordun had also distinguished himself amongst the Dragonblades. Something that Caius was wholly aware of, and intended to do something as a leader for later. He would go shopping for materials later, for he had something in mind. But for now... He needed to sleep. As did Vordun. Vordun deserved a vacation, first and foremost. Which he would have after the ceremony.
Caius had sent Vordun home and retreated to the Wyvern's Rest where he soon collapsed from exhaustion. After reporting to Celes, Caius had spent the next few days recovering, before preparing for the ceremony. They were to be heralded as slayers of the Kraken, and he had to represent the Dragonblades well. Despite how tired he was, he still managed to at least look presentable. His long hair had been tied back, and instead of his armored jacket (Which was soaked to the bone and wouldn't be usable without a good and long drying out) he wore a blue dress shirt with a collar and buttons, and a pair of black pants. He looked far from the mighty mercenary that he had been the night of the Kraken's attack, but he did clean up nicely at least. This was far from his most comfortable attire, but it would do.
He had then spent the rest of the morning getting Vordun ready. He had polished his scales, trimmed his claws and washed off the grime from the battle. Vordun hated it, but Caius understood that if they were going to earn the trust of Torensten's people, Vordun needed to look like he was more than a wild beast. And ever the intelligent beast, Caius had the impression that Vordun understood when Caius explained this to him. Otherwise he probably wouldn't have actually let Caius do it with so little of a fight as he gave. To further emphasize the impression, Caius borrowed the flag hanging inside of the Wyvern's Rest, the one he'd commissioned to make it feel more like a home for the Dragonblades inside. It had their logo, which made it a perfect fit. Caius had draped the Dragonblades flag over Vordun's back where his saddle would typically be. It was far more comfortable for Vordun than the saddle, and much less heavy. While also stressing the message better than the saddle would -- that Vordun is a Dragonblade. And Vordun was a proud citizen of Torensten just as much as the Dragonblades were.
Now the ceremony had arrived. Even after all the tragedy, all of the pain and suffering they had endured... Upon seeing all of the people gathering in the square, dancing, singing, socializing, eating, drinking...
He understood.
He understood exactly why he had been called here. The people of Torensten needed this. This was how King Hremit had ruled for years, giving people hope and happiness even when things turned bleak. For all the years he'd lived here, he had never truly lived here. Never truly experienced Torensten for what it was. This was its secret. The secret of how no matter the disaster that befell it, Torensten's people seemed to always stay alive and proud, and always willing to help each other out and rebuild again. It was King Hremit himself who fostered their spirits, who encouraged them to keep that pride and that energy alive. There was a life to this city that felt a world apart from the state it had been not long ago. Even Caius, who had only been a spectator for so long... Walked through Legend Square and felt his own face light up. His look of surprise faded into a light-emboldened smile.
This was Torensten. This was the secret to its life. A people who kept it going strong... And a leader that kept its fire burning bright even in the face of adversity.
People nervously parted as Caius led Vordun through the crowds, some seemed cautious, some fearful... Others curious as they squinted to look closely at the dragon's gentle features, some of their gazes moving to the flag draped over his back. Caius looked around for Sabin and Mu. He would take more comfort in their company.

While relieved that they managed to take down the Kraken, Keimusho couldn't help but notice the esteem that he had garnered as a result of this and the Festival of the Hunt. Normally attention and fame can be seen a detriment to a shinobi. After all it isn't easy to be sneaky if the public knows your name. However, it doesn't really bother him as much as it did initially. Renown shinobi did always have some sort of legend garnered. There were stories of shinobi in Doma such as Sasuke who pioneered the shinobi arts in Doma and even of more modern shinobi such as Yugiri Mistwalker. And that was not even mentioning that blending in was impossible for him here. His style of armor not stands out, but being an Au Ra makes him stand out even more. Since coming to Zephon he hasn't encountered a single other Au Ra, Xaela or Raen. It just makes it clear to him that his race probably doesn't exist here. Not that it matters to him. It's not like he wears the fact that his in an Au Ra on his sleeve, just that he is Doman.
Another reason why he wasn't so bothered was because he still managed to help people, which to him was the most important result. If his prowess as a warrior was what was going to keep people safe then so be it. That did not mean that he was going to stop using his alias, however. In truth, the name Mu has more sentimental value to him than value of serving as a pseudonym. It was a code name given to him by his clan. The names were given to the names of certain jonin who exhibited characteristics or certain concepts. It wasn't even formal as it were the jonin themselves that gave such names. There were a few such as Jingi for honor or Rekai for understanding. Keimusho's name Mu was for nothingness. He never truly understood why exactly he was given that name. Was it because when he joined the clan he had nothing? Or was it because he was more of the sort to show no emotion in comparison to the others. The Au Ra really wished he asked the question before since its certain that he won't get the chance to do so anytime soon.
Because of their success in taking down the Kraken, King Hremit would ask the Dragonblades and Mu to attend yet another ceremony. Though this was only the second ceremony that he would attend, he was starting to wonder if these ceremonies were a regular occurrence. While Keimusho wasn't the most ecstatic about the ceremony he was certainly not going to decline without good reason. Doing so would probably be some sort of insult to the king and he'd rather have fame than infamy. Enma on the other hand was way more receptive to the idea. He in someway saw it as an opportunity to gain recognition as a useful weapon. It does make sense in some ways. After all he literally is a weapon or at least fused to one and if the warrior is great then surely his weapon must be as well. Also it wasn't like Enma would need to to conceal himself when taking into account that a dragon would be honored in this ceremony as well. A dragon is (probably) more terrifying to most people than a small demon-like being that was no more than a foot long.
As he walked through the Legend Square he noticed how the people mostly had their eyes on Vordun and Caius, which meant that less eyes were on him and Enma. He preferred it this way, he didn't mind the fame but he wasn't a fan of more direct attention on him.
Sabin looked himself in the mirror and knew with certainty that he'd much rather be out in the water fighting another Kraken.
The King's invitation was generous, and the ceremony was an honor, and all Sabin could think was that this sort of thing was exactly what he'd run away from ten years ago. He'd readily regale the people of Torensten with tales of bravery and action over a few pints in a tavern, but the spotlight of ceremony made his skin crawl. It reminded him too much of the expectation and etiquette heaped upon himself and his brother; dress nice, smile for the people, say a few words, because one day all this responsibility will...
He sighed and wished Edgar were here. He found himself doing that a lot lately.
Still, he combed his beard and fixed his hair and put on the nicest of his muscle shirts and ventured out to the ceremony. Whether he wanted to be there or not, it would reflect poorly on the Dragonblades if he didn't show.
By the time he arrived at the square there was no trace of reticence left on his face. He smiled his big broad smile and turned on his particular flavor of Figaro charm. He wasn't Edgar, of course, but nobody was. He walked with the upright poise of a martial artist, but there was something more in the way he carried himself. Something faintly regal and long buried.
His bright blue eyes took in the scenery, the crowd, the square. Caius and Vordun stood out like a beacon, and as Sabin moseyed on over he caught sight of Keimusho as well.
"Hey!" he called out, waving. As he stepped up next to Vordun he gave the dragon a friendly pat on the flank.
"Some turnout, huh? It's a good thing I didn't bring Daisy. I don't think she'd like the crowd."

The Dragonglaive
Caius soon found himself in the company of both Sabin and Mu amongst the crowds, and he managed a sheepish smile to the both of them. Caius bowed his head in greeting, and Sabin was the first to speak up. "If I can bring a dragon, I am sure Miss Daisy can suck it up and manage the crowds" Caius joked in turn. Not that he blamed this Daisy that Sabin was clearly fond of. He didn't like crowds either. If he could have skipped this event, he would have. But it would be rude to the King. And that would be bad. And Celes would have torn his head off for that one.
The attire of the two of them though, made Caius wonder if he could have worn something a bit more... Casual, and gotten away with it. Had he been mistaken on the dress code? By the looks of the rest of the crowd though... It was most likely just that his companions didn't get the message. Of course, if he'd known they were going to... Perhaps he'd have been more comfortable wearing something a bit better for him, personally. Oh well. Lessons learned and likely never applied, and all that.
With that, Caius took a deep breath as they continued to walk towards the center, where King Hremit had set up a stage in front of the Grand Statue. People backed away and gave the group a wide berth considering the presence of Vordun. The group would be greeted by a party of retainers who would lead them to where His Highness was actively helping prepare the rest of the celebration. Caius smiled lightly. The fact the King hadn't lost his work ethic made him happy for some reason.
"Oh! Our honored guests are here!" Hremit spoke up as he sighted the group. He reached over and shook the hands of all three of them. Though when he got to Vordun, he looked to Caius.
"Is... Is he friendly? Can... Can I pet him?"
That sure as hell got the attention of his retainers, who all began to rush forward, crying out "Your Majesty!" and "Please do not touch that creature!" but these were ignored when Caius calmly nodded his head and responded with "You may."
The King was a little nervous, Caius could tell in his eyes, despite his confident and friendly exterior. He supposed he couldn't blame him. Not after the horrible dragon attack on Torensten years back. But Hremit swallowed his fears and reached up, lightly patting Vordun on the head. The drake responded by nuzzling his head against Hremit's hand, which caused the King's face to light up. The retainers were somewhere between baffled, horrified and relieved.
"He's a sweetheart!" His Highness exclaimed. "How in blazes did you lot come to meet such a rare creature?" Hremit asked the group, looking to Caius, then Sabin, then Mu.

[attr="class","skullbody"]As Mu bows to his two companions, Enma appears on the ninja's shoulder. "Hey what's Kraken?" Yes, the little floating oni did do that on purpose. The shinobi barely kept himself from sighing. But Seven Hells, Enma would not shut up about the damned Kraken ever since they had slain it. [break][break] Sabin would mention a Daisy fellow not being too fond of crowds. Mu could agree with that sentiment, but what shinobi did like crowds? At least they could prove beneficial for drawing attention away from yourself or for blending in, but this was not a situation like that. Though he was sure Enma was enjoying the extra attention, the Anima did like bragging about their achievements even though he really didn't get much recognition for them on account for being a weapon. [break][break] Soon enough the guests of honor would meet the host of prestige, non other than King Hremit himself. It was odd, as it was not all that long ago that Mu and Caius first met the King after they were deemed the Champions of the Hunt. Now they were here to be celebrated as the Slayers of the Kraken. [break][break] The king would ask Caius to pet his dragon, much to the dismay of his retainers. As expected, nothing bad resulted from this. How could it? That dragon was how they got to shore, surely he wouldn't mind a few touches. "He's a sweetheart! How in blazes did you lot come to meet such a rare creature?" That was a good question. How did Caius come into contact with Vordun? The shinobi never recalled him ever telling the story. The ninja intrigued, looked expectantly.
"Oh, I wouldn't be so sure about that," Sabin replied to Caius. "Daisy can get awfully cranky, and that's no fun for anybody."
Sabin flashed a bright grin and laughed like he was in on a joke that nobody else was. Then he followed along with Caius and Keimusho, nodding and smiling to the onlookers when they chanced to look his way. His princely training didn't seem like it had left him, even after ten years of disuse. He carried himself like a natural as they navigated the crowd and approached the King. He couldn't help but make some base, instinctual comparison to his old man. He knew it wasn't fair. Nobody could match up.
He couldn't help but feel grateful for Vordun taking center stage, and Sabin crossed his arms loosely over his chest and watched the King and the dragon. In the middle of the distraction, Sabin leaned over towards Keimusho and said, just loud enough for the ninja to hear, "This would be a great time to dodge the crowd and sneak off, huh?"
He had no intentions of following through with it, of course - that would be a bad look for the Dragonblades, and he didn't want to put that on his friends - but he couldn't deny the temptation. The King should've just bought them all a round at the nearest tavern.

The Dragonglaive
Caius had been put on the spot. At first it didn't bother him much, surprised him is all. But his relief and laughter at the King's reaction slowly died down as he realized practically the whole city, including Mu, were staring at him expectantly. Caius was reminded that he did not do well with crowds. Where was Celes when you needed her? Busy and unable to attend the ceremony, unfortunately. Caius practically gulped his lungs down as it dawned on him the pressure of the situation. Caius took a deep breath, slowly nodding his head. Everything had gone silent. There had been whispers amongst the crowd at first, but now that the floor was his, well...
Time to earn his keep, he supposed. Celes wouldn't be very happy if he bombed this in front of the entire city. He cleared his throat.
"I raised him myself" Caius admitted, looking first to the crowd and then to the King, constantly moving back and forth between them as he tried to get himself into the same storyteller mode that he got into at pubs and private engagements. He'd never had an audience quite like this before, though. "I was on a job hunting down one of the dragons that attacked Torensten many a moon ago, during my earlier mercenary days where I was a solo act instead of fighting alongside my own mercenary unit. The thing was huge, far bigger than Vordy here."
Vordun snorted smoke at Caius when he brought up that detail, an act that actually garnered a bit of laughter from some of the audience, including the King himself. "Vordy, stop it! We are not having this argument again, you overgrown lizard!" Caius remarked to the drake, laughing a bit himself as he placed a hand on Vordun's snout. The drake gave the closest thing to a dragony pout, before promptly sitting down as if Vordun himself wanted to hear this story since he had already begun it. "Will put you in time-out, I swear" Caius not-so-muttered jokingly, setting the scene and setting the mood as he continued. "Right, the dragon. Big bastard. Had to be at least 20 feet. Had another bounty hunter with me, but they fled pretty early into the battle. Not the funnest fight I've ever been involved in. The damned thing nearly singed every hair off my head, and I was cooped up at the temple for about a week after I dragged myself there. Barely escaped the fight with my life, but I managed to take it down. So here I am, with a pretty hefty bounty for myself, and some dragon scales to sell for a bit more profit. Not bad, not a bad day at all if you leave out the part where I was half-man, half-charcoal by the end of it."
Caius cleared his throat, giving a moment to survey reactions and read the room before he continued. "But as I hobbled my way out, I noticed something I hadn't seen before. A nest, with a single egg. Now, whether this creature had laid an egg and I'd just killed the mother, or it was an egg thief keeping it warm for a feast, I don't know the answer to that question to this day. But either way, I'd left this egg, a life, to freeze to death and I just..." he trailed off as he shrugged his shoulders. "I couldn't. So I took it with me. I couldn't find an expert in dragons, so... I kept it with me on my travels as I began to meet people throughout Zephon and the foundation for the Dragonblades began to come together. It was on the very night that General Chere and I decided to form the Dragonblades, that the egg hatched. He was a cute little bugger. A little bitey and a little saucy, but what baby isn't? So in the end, when it came to our three founding members, we had blades, we had a dragon... So we became the Dragonblades. Vordun's been with me since, and has been instrumental in saving so many lives. He has played a huge part in our work, and we wouldn't have survived that storm without him. He's very much as part of the Dragonblades as the rest of us."
With that, he cleared his throat. "So um... Questions? Anyone? After that, I assume by what I know of traditions, folks will probably want to hear about the whole Kraken thing, so uh... When we do that, why don't Mu and Sabin help me in telling that story?" Caius brought up as he turned to look Mu dead in the eyes. He'd seen him look to Caius expectantly when the King asked his question. And Caius did not forget. "I can't hog all the glory for myself, after all."

[attr="class","skullbody"] "This would be a great time to dodge the crowd and sneak off, huh?" Sabin whispered towards the ninja. "Perhaps. Though I'd prefer to honor my commitments. Besides, Enma would never let me hear the end of it." This small exchange would be proceeded by Caius explaining how he met the dragon. The mercenary raised it from an egg. That small detail just made it astonishing how fast dragon's matured. The shinobi could remember how small Vordun was when he first laid eyes on then. Now he was large enough to drag them all to safety. [break][break] After explaining Vordun's origins, Caius would pass the ball over to both Mu and Sabin. "So um... Questions? Anyone? After that, I assume by what I know of traditions, folks will probably want to hear about the whole Kraken thing, so uh... When we do that, why don't Mu and Sabin help me in telling that story? I can't hog all the glory for myself, after all." That is when Enma decided to raise his hand up. "Ooo ooo I'll tell the story!" Mu knew that Enma was going to use this story to feed his ego, but he wasn't going to stop the little oni. [break][break] Enma explained every intricate detail of the fight with the Kraken, making sure to emphasize that he contributed. He explains how the group ran the Sahagin off and how the sailors got turned into frogs. "...and that was when the crystal ran out of power. Mu had to put his own power into the crystal to keep it running. Sooner or later everyone in their combined efforts took down that Kraken with fire and LOTS of it!"
Sabin nodded along with Enma's telling of the tale of the Kraken Battle, offering a low chuckle or a shake of his head when the oni's exaggerations stretched the truth just enough without breaking it. He didn't care enough to debate it - it was a good yarn, after all, and that's what the crowd was here for. But even so, Sabin supposed he couldn't let Enma tell the whole tale.
"That's right," Sabin chimed in in his booming, boisterous voice. "Mu saved our hides - and everyone on the ship! - by taking care of the crystal like he did." Sabin clapped Mu on the shoulder in a gesture of his gratitude and respect. "Me and Caius and this little guy here," he gestured with a nod of his head towards Vordun, "bombarded that Kraken with all the fire we had to keep that monster from tearing the ship apart. It wasn't the first time I went toe-to-tentacle with a water creature like that, but this one was definitely the biggest I'd ever seen."
He still hadn't quite learned the difference between an octopus and a squid, but that was beside the point.
Sabin slipped into his wide fighting stance with one hand up in front of him and the other low at his side.
"The deck of the ship was thrashing in every direction. It was tough enough just trying to stay standing. But I called on my training, and hit the creature with every Blitz I knew!"
To illustrate the point, Sabin put his hands together and summoned just the faintest aura of the Fire Dance he leaned on again and again to turn the Kraken into seafood soup. He threw a few shadow punches, and the glowing orange aura dissipated. He nodded in Caius's direction, as if handing off the spotlight.

The Dragonglaive
Well, thank the Astrals that Mu's companion was far more talkative than Caius was comfortable being. Caius' shoulders slumped in relief. He had done enough talking himself and he was quite happy to let Enma take point. Though he couldn't help but laugh at some of the details. The creature really did like to bluster, didn't it? Even Vordun seemed to understand how much they were ensuring to include their own participation, to the point the dragon gave an annoyed snort directed towards the oni. Caius could appreciate a good storyteller when he saw one though, so he didn't interrupt. If the storyteller wanted to exaggerate a few things to keep the crowd's attention, then it was their prerogative. While the crowd had initially been startled when the tiny spirit had started talking, they had been just a little bit desensitized after their King had started petting a dragon of all things. And they were too busy hanging onto the creature's every word to fret about it too much.
But when Sabin spoke up, Caius couldn't help but roar in laughter. Sabin was so bold and exaggerated, almost as much as the oni was. He was so expressive too, and Caius knew he was going to have to take notes. Then it was handed back off to Caius, who gulped a bit out of nerves, but managed to find the confidence in his voice to continue the yarn. He held out his arms as he stepped forward and addressed the crowd.
"Monsters, waves, tentacles, the maw of the beast... The Kraken had everything it could at us, and we threw everything right back. It was a struggle to survive, and at any moment, we knew we could be thrown overboard, or worse. We were TRAPPED within the farthest reaches of the sea, the belly of the beast! It held every advantage over us within its domain and even now, I don't know how we are still standing here before you on this day."
His movements as he paced around the stage had become a little much exaggerated, as had the movement of his hands. But while he was nervous around a crowd, it was still an exciting tale to tell, and telling these stories was certainly within his wheelhouse.
"But we fought with every intentions of going until we could fight no more. Our final blows were struck, with Blitz, the shinobi arts, the searing wrath of a dragon's fire, and the eventual stab of my gunblade through the creature's flesh. It slowly began to sink, and began to concoct its magic to bring us down with it. I decided to grant the creature a quick death, hoping to spare us its vengeance. But while the creature was felled, its final wishes in death were granted. The storm only worsened with the creature's demise, and with our ship badly damaged, the sea threatened to swallow us whole. The ship was lost, and the lifeboats would never survive the seas. All hope was lost... Until we came up with one final, desperate gambit."
Caius motioned to the drake beside him. "Vordun would be our hero on this day. With Mu powering the crystal while we loaded the others into the lifeboats, all we could do was place our hopes in Vordun to carry us to salvation. If Vordun could not power through the storm, our lives were forfeit and we would never see the shores again. But as horribly exhausting as it was, fighting the storms while pulling us across the seas in order to prevent the waves from capsizing the lifeboats, Vordun endured. This is the most stubborn lizard I've ever seen in my life, and for it, he saved us all. If Vordun had wanted, he could have left us there and flown away to save himself, but he didn't. He showed incomparable selflessness and an unwavering determination to see us through that isn't present in many a man. And we are only here because of that effort. It was a close call, but everyone did their part, and carried the day."
It had been thanks to Enma that Caius had been able to find some confidence and continue the story as he did. He was grateful for that.
