That wasn’t exactly a positive nor was it a negative in his line of work. It was a necessity -- significant in its own way. For potential clients, he was somewhere between a pilot, a mercenary, and a scoundrel. For the forces of law, he was a wanted criminal implicated in the thefts of many rare and priceless artifacts.
A shame the way that balanced itself out.
Balthier stopped and took a step back from his airship, arms crossed. He’d been working on tuning the engine all morning, and he wasn’t entirely certain he’d gotten anywhere close to adequate. The Torensten airships were a sight different from his specialty -- relying on some combination of technology and magic in a way that he’d never seen before. After a time searching for a more traditional model, he’d had no choice but to admit defeat. It seemed the rest of this land wasn’t particularly fond of deviating from the formula. Perhaps Balthier would have to fix that.
Balthier crept around the ship, hands on his hips as he leaned in closer to inspect its inner workings. He had a wrench in one hand, slid carefully between his fingers so that soot wouldn’t dirty his cuffs. On a tray, he had all manner of tools, gadgets, and spare parts he’d gathered for a week from the exotic Provo marketplaces. The ship was like a puzzle. One that he intended to crack.
”I hope that Fran is having a better bout of luck.” Balthier sighed, placing his wrench with the others before crossing his arms again. Hours of work and nothing at all to show for it. Fran had offered to stay, of course, but while she knew enough of mechanics to keep them in the air, she had nothing of Balthier’s expertise. If he was going to waste his time, he’d rather she at least find them something of worth. A job perhaps. These refurbishments wouldn’t pay for themselves.
What he wouldn’t give to helm The Strahl.
He brushed his hands together and took another tool in hand. He would learn the inner workings of this engine whether he had to spend another six hours or another six days. He leaned in and examined the gutted thing, turning over a gear in his hand. Magic and technology.”Quite the eclectic fit if I might say so myself.”

Garnet was not, she was aware, an expert on airships. Oh, she'd travelled on enough of them in her time. The Red Rose, obviously, the Hilda Garde III, the Invincible, even that little rickety airship that had spirited them to Lindblum... She still remembered them all. She remembered taking the controls of the tiny rickety airship, the Black Waltz hot on their tail, aiming to fly through the gates... They were so massive, closing so slowly, and yet, all of it felt so small, like the slightest hesitation, the slightest ill-adjustment, and she'd crash the airship into it. Despite that, she remembered her determination to succeed, and if she was entirely honest, maybe a little thrill at doing so.
It wasn't like she had aspirations to be an airship pilot, and maybe part of the thrill had been proving herself useful, knowing that she had a job to do and seeing it done, but she had enjoyed it. There had been a few times on the Hilda Garde III too where she'd sneakily asked to try the controls and practice flying the ship, but not properly. And no matter if she'd held the ship's wheel once or a thousand times, she still had no idea how they worked. Even less so here where there was no mist and they ran on what she could only assume was some form of magic. Much like the Invincible for that matter. She still had no understanding of how that worked either.
Despite all of this, however, she was fairly certain that the airship parts where supposed to be inside the airship. She overheard the man speaking to himself in an accent that wouldn't have been out of place among the Alexandrian court nobles, particularly how proud of himself he seemed to be. Which, again, given that the innards of the airship were scattered around Garnet was not sure was an achievement. Still, she was seeking a pilot, and one who had to rebuild his own engine would be affordable.
If only the ship would actually fly, she thought hopefully.
"Excuse me, would you be.... Captain Balthier?" she asked cautiously, from the edge of the airship dock. It wasn't that Garnet was over-whelmingly prissy, despite what people might think of her as a Queen, but she didn't particularly want to get engine grease on her silky orange outfit. Replacement clothes were hard to come by with her resources so limited, and besides, wanting to keep clean was hardly anything to be ashamed of, was it? "I am... seeking transportation on an airship, and have heard your name mentioned." Her eyes moved to the engine, and she found herself nervously playing with the pendant around her neck. She wasn't sure why she felt so uneasy, but maybe it was the thought of being up in the air in an airship rebuilt by hand?
No, that was nonsense. The old airship that had transported them to Lindblum had proven to be a reliable and faithful steed. In fact, Garnet almost missed the old thing, and this airship looked much more powerful than that. "I can... return if this is a bad time?" she suggested, eyeing the engine still.
Balthier is unimpressed lol But then again, when is he ever impressed?
I play the leading man, who else?
”Excuse me. Would be… Captain Balthier?”
”Hm?”
Balthier looked over to see that a girl had approached him. She seemed young though more in mannerism than age. She had that kind of face -- cautious, nervous, unsure. She peered curiously at his work, and he thought he caught a hint of judgment in her eyes.
”I am… seeking transportation on an airship, and I have heard your name mentioned.”
Was that it then? Had he become nothing more than a means of transport? Balthier sighed, head slightly tilted. ”You need a pilot, do you?” He wasn’t fond of the title. Captain Balthier. It was too formal. It reminded him of the military.
”Well there’s plenty about. Perhaps you could frequent one of city's aerodromes? They run across the country daily.” From Torensten to Provo. From Provo to Torensten. Never an inch strayed with everything in its place. Balthier supposed that he too could have limited himself to such well-traveled routes, but he found the notion dull. The skies meant freedom, and he certainly if he’d wanted to ground himself, he might as well not have bothered with the whole pirating business in the first place.
He waved away her concerns. ”Now’s as good a time as ever,” he said. He placed his tool back on its tray, swapping it for a handkerchief which he used to wipe the oil from his hands. ”This ship is proving as stubborn as she is troublesome.”
Once his hands were sufficiently clean, he set the handkerchief aside, placing them at his hips as he finally turned towards her. ”If you’re dead set on flying then it will have to wait til morning. Unless you’d like to risk falling out of the sky, that is.” Even if he abandoned any hopes at progress, it would still take time to put the engine back together. He’d memorized its fit and form, but he would still have to run optics. It was imperative to test one’s work even under the best of circumstances.
”And where is it you’re so determined on going? It must be some ways off the beaten path, I presume.”

Garnet supposed Balthier's response to her was understandable. She was aware that she had a somewhat shy manner when speaking to strangers, something she had tried to shake as much as she could now that she was a Queen, but it was still there at times. Especially when she wasn't confident. And to him, the idea that she was seeking transportation must have seemed like any young girl wanting to get from one city to another. His suggestion to find another airship made sense. But only because he didn't know the truth of what she was after, or why she had come to him.
"They travel between cities. I am not looking for transportation to a location," Garnet answered rather simply, trying to find a little more of her courage and queenly status in her voice. She paused, feeling rather foolish for a moment, but deciding to press on regardless. "I am looking for somebody. I believe I will be able to search more effectively from the air with an airship that will travel where I need it to go," she explained. She knew she would have to convince him she was more than the meek girl he seemed to think she was. "On... previous adventures I have had, an airship proved invaluable in our travels. I believe it could assist me here," she went on, hoping that by dropping that this was not her first adventure, she would be able to win some respect from the sky captain.
"I would... prefer to wait and ensure that your vessel is prepared to fly," she confessed when he offered her the option. "I do not know yet where my path will take me, but... as you say, it is... off the beaten track..." Beaten track? She would remember that one. No matter how much slang she thought she picked up, she was always surprised to hear new phrases, but she knew they were useful to add to her vocabulary. "I am sure if the person I seek was in any of the main cities by now I would have heard word of him, so... I feel travelling elsewhere is my only option," she elaborated, hoping that he would understand.
Did you ask for an excuse to go literally anywhere on the map because that's what you're getting lol
I play the leading man, who else?
”Hm.”
Balthier listened. It was best to listen, he’d found, and turn over the words like a gear in his hand. A client could be testy, fickle, and unpredictable. Though he thought that he could predict her just fine.
She was inexperienced, if not in travel then in life itself. That was to be expected, he supposed, given her age. She looked somewhere above the age of sixteen and below the age of twenty. Though he had certainly been more world-worn by that time in his life.
Not so long ago, he mused. He supposed that living for oneself would greatly accelerate the process. Not that he’d ever been given much of a shelter in life to begin with.
He listened and he thought and then he waved his hand. ”If it’s a missing person you’re after then I’m not one for the case. With a description, I could keep my eyes open, but the search would cost more than’s worth the trouble.”
Unless he was deeply mistaken about her wealth, that was. He hadn’t failed to notice the jewel glimmering about her neck. It spoke of some manner of nobility or perhaps it was only a family heirloom. Either way, he hoped the phantom price would dissuade her.
He really did hate a search and rescue.
”I can’t take just any tag-along,” he said. ”Though if you’ll keep to yourself, the price would be significantly more manageable. We plan to scout the west for treasure and exotic locales. The trip doesn’t come highly recommended by the authorities, but with a light enough ship, I don’t foresee an issue.”
Unless they ran out of fuel. Or the mountains proved too treacherous. Or the authorities caught up to them. But he found some trifles unworthy of mention.
”Do you have any destination in mind? We plan to hit the World Sight, the Divider, and the city of Aljana. If your man is the adventurous type, he may very well think the same.”

Garnet listened carefully to his responses and considered. So, it seemed that she wouldn't gain control of his ship, but he would, if she could convince him she was worth having along, allow her to travel with him. If Zidane wasn't to be spotted in any of the major cities, these more adventurous locales Balthier was suggesting certainly sounded like the types of place in which she might find him. Perhaps she was taking the wrong approach to this. Balthier suggested her keeping to herself and the price being more manageable, but she realised that instead she could take a different tact. She looked back at him, trying to project further confidence.
"I'm new to this world. If my experience in the city has told me anything, it's that I doubt that'll surprise you. I don't know these locations of which you speak or where to begin a search myself," she began. "But accompanying you on your hunt could be beneficial to us both," she suggested. This seemed the best approach. If she couldn't hire him as a mercenary, she would sell herself as one. After all, why not? She knew that her skills, while perhaps not flashy and directly useful in battle that often, were very important in most fights. "Am I to understand that this journey of yours is not going to be entirely safe?" she queried. "I have access to a range of white magic. I could be particularly useful to healing and keeping your crew alive and unharmed. Allow me to travel with you, going where you please, and I shall offer my services." She paused, considering that she was probably still sounding too much like a Queen and not enough like Dagger. It had been a while, after all. She allowed herself to relax a little. To be more herself. The person she had discovered herself to be. "I've been in tons of battles, you know? I'm a seasoned pro," she smiled playfully, remembering when she had said those exact words to Marcus so long ago, and his look of incredulity.
"My name's Dagger," she introduced, which made her feel better too. "I'm a summoner too. I could definitely help you," she smiled. She put her hands on her hips and tried to look as confident as she could. "Don't worry, I can take care of myself," she assured him. She hoped that he would accept. She knew that her abilities could be useful, and this seemed the best opportunity that she had.
Balthier cocked an eyebrow, head tilted as he considered her. “Beneficial to us both” was a phrase to which he had a particular liking. It spoke of some kind of negotiation, and one that could very well prove in his favor. At the very least, it might amuse him. From the look of it, he very much suspected the latter.
Still, he let her speak. Though she claimed to have had experiences adventuring out into the world, he couldn’t see it in her. He could see her nobility. He had an eye for that, certainly, but while she might be able to pull her weight, she didn’t seem quite like an asset. She seemed too unsure of herself. Too hesitant. He thought over her proposal, smirking slightly as she switched to a more natural cadence. Well, more natural for the common person, he supposed. Balthier himself had never much taken to an informal tongue.
”A summoner, eh? I can’t say that I’m familiar.” Balthier shrugged and shook his head. ”But I suppose we could use a white mage. If you’re as seasoned as you claim then I won’t anticipate any trouble.”
Balthier crossed his arms, glancing up in thought. ”How about this? I’ll waive the fee if you lend us a hand raiding the ruins for treasure. Failing that, I’ll need some form of collateral.” He jerked his head towards her pendant. ”Why not that lovely jewel around your neck? If you know what you’re doing then you needn’t worry one way or the other.”
That was to say that if she was really worth the trouble in a fight then there wouldn’t be need for an alternative payment. A reasonable proposal if he might say so himself, and one that was perhaps more forgiving than was strictly necessary. He briefly wondered what Fran might say, and then decided that she likely wouldn’t say much.

Garnet actually found it refreshing to meet somebody who didn't seem to recognise what a summoner was. On her world, summoners had been lost to time and become a thing of legend, of course, but, well, recent events had made sure everybody in the world knew what a summoner was once more. And more than that, they knew that Queen Garnet Til Alexandros of Alexandria was one. It made some people fear her. A fact that she wasn't overly fond of. But here, she thought that it could be beneficial. "There are not many that are," she countered when he said he was unfamiliar. "On my world, there are but two of us left. Here... it appears to vary. I have seen others who command eidolons, but... in a different manner. All you need to know is that I can, if required, summon powerful aide to our side." she explained. That would have to do, and she had to hope that he wouldn't ask for a demonstration. She made it sound like a useful ally, which it was. On their quest to save the world, her summons had helped her so many times, but she had also seen what disaster they could wrought. And she wasn't sure letting a man like Balthier know what he possessed in her power was a good idea.
"I'll help you find your treasure," she agreed with a nod. She didn't much like the idea; it wasn't really her style, pointlessly raiding places for treasure when there was a mission that needed to be seen through, but then again, the word chocograph floated across her mind and she realised maybe the pot was calling the kettle black. She would do it. For Zidane, she would do anything.
On that topic, he called attention to the Falcon Claw pendant around her neck. Her hand went to it for a moment, hesitant. Not only had the jewel been in her family (well, the royal family) for generations, but she had worn it her entire life. It was also a connection back to her world, back to Alexandria. And of course, part of the powerful summoning crystal used to summon Alexander. Not that it could ever be used now after Alexander's death, but it was important. It wasn't something she could just give away.
But ultimately, it was a stone. Zidane was Zidane. She would do what she had to do. "The Falcon Claw pendant..." she told Balthier. "In this world, it's not worth much, but on mine..." she trailed off. "It is the most important heirloom I own. So know this, when I agree to your terms, that is how confident I am that I'll be able to assist you," she said confidently, a fierce look of determination in her eyes, her Dagger-like contractions still being used to avoid her formal language. At least a little. She didn't want him asking TOO many questions about how a travelling white mage had such an heirloom, after all...
The Falcon Claw pendant. Dagger claimed it wasn’t worth much, but Balthier had an eye for treasure, and he had to disagree. Perhaps it wouldn’t be worth quite its usual weight in a nation unfamiliar with its origin, but a crystal -- particularly one so polished and clear -- would win a price as heavy as any gold or jewels. It was a reliable insurance, and reason enough to bring her along. She was dedicated at least.
”It seems we’ve struck a deal.” Balthier shook his head then went back to his tools, eyeing the different bolts before choosing one of an approximately fitting size. ”I’ll reassemble the ship. She won’t fly as well as I’m accustomed, but she should get the job done.”
It wasn’t surprising given that this was a civilian ship, and one of unfamiliar make. He hoped that he could optimize her well enough to commandeer better accommodations when he had the chance. He’d left behind one of the Empire’s best vessels with nearly half a decade of personal customization to her credit. Anything else could be nothing less than a disappointment.
”A white mage summoner…” he mused to himself. ”Well, if your skills are as impressive as your claims then I doubt you’ll be parting with that pendant anytime soon. We could use some powerful aid.”
The eidolons sounded similar to...something. Something he’d seen before. Strange, it wasn’t like him to forget something so outlandish. Maybe he’d heard it in a legend somewhere. He must have.
”I’ll tell my partner to expect the company. If you have any particular destination in mind, now might be the time to study your maps.” Balthier took a wrench of similar size to the bolt and started back to his ship. ”We’ll leave in the morning.”
