An explosion of glass erupted around Zidane as he dove through a window, spells flying past him as he ducked and weaved through the pipes and wires of Lindblum, climbing down the side of the building. Adrenaline pumped through him as he athletically flipped from balcony, to outcropping, to clothesline as angry voices rang from above. It was bad enough to be seeking a rendezvous with a local cutie, but when she's the daughter of one of the most powerful Red Mages in the city? It became a conquest, and there was no real adventure if you didn't get attacked sometimes.
He landed on the roof of a nearby building, sliding to a stop and turning to bow, looking back up to see his conquest Garnet called to him from the window of the Castle tower, Alexandria burning around him as he dropped to a knee, wounded. He looked back up to her, just in time to see The Invincible come into view, a blue light and familiar laugh surrounding him as the weapon fired-
Zidane awoke with a start, a small yelp escaping his throat as he almost called out to Garnet. It took him a moment, his shuddering breath echoing the walls of the abandoned house he was staying in, almost helping bring it into focus. He hugged his knees, closing his eyes and calming himself. He had yet to find anyone. He had sought out a way home, since landing there a year ago, and found nothing. He made new friends, but lost track of them, chasing rumor upon rumor, and coming up with nothing. He had a good idea where Kuja was, but at this point, he knew that Kuja was doing his own thing. Right now, rumors of a girl with a tail like his pulled him away from where he was staying, and rumors of someone asking for him by name…
A raven haired woman, going by the name 'Dagger.'
If she was here, he needed to find her, one way or another. He picked himself up, grabbing his bag, and leaving the wreckage of the home. Torensten… she had to be there.
He would arrive in the city a day later, having hitched a ride with a man making a delivery of salt to the local butchers. Hopping out of the cab, he set a few gil in the seat he left, and started on his way down the street. A familiar buzz of commerce and people met his ears, and a few of the vendors recognized the tail, giving a wave. He'd return the waves, but he kept his face shrouded. No smiles, not yet.
He had been waiting for this for over a year, now.
He rounded a corner, passing a familiar tavern, a few more shops, then emerging from one of the side roads into a large square, people listening to music and visiting. He smiled a bit, glad to see that rebuilding had been going well. The people seemed a bit happier, which was saying something after having the place blown up several times.

It was strange how she had slipped into a routine in the recent weeks. Her search for Zidane had yielded no answers, and the threat of Kuja went unanswered. She realised that while she had travelled the world, she had never lived like this, aimless, and without a goal. No, that was a lie, she had a goal; find Zidane, find a way back home, stop Kuja, but... without a way of achieving that. She had gotten a job working at a small local clinic, where she used her White Magic to heal battered adventurers for gil. It didn't make much, but enough to live, but it was a life Garnet had never experienced. Working for hours every day, and then repeating it the next day, with no end and no goal in sight. She realised that for all her travelling, as worldly as she thought she had become, she still had very little understanding of the day to day life of regular citizens. If there was one thing she could say about this experience, it was that Faris was right, and that she would return a stronger Queen than she had been before. She was learning so much.
Like the importance of gil. She wasn't naïve, she knew gil was important. But somehow, when they had been travelling, it hadn't been her daily concern, but here, even with the extra gil she had gotten from selling her gown, she seemed to be daily counting coins, making sure they lasted while paying for lodgings and food. It was stressful, and she was beginning to understand why things like taxes were always the primary concerns of the citizens. It was because they were always worried about money. It was easy to focus on duty when you didn't have to worry about gil, it was easy to have the luxury of doing the right thing, Garnet thought, when you were a Princess or a Queen, but being poor made it more difficult, didn't it? When you had so much more to worry about than just what the right thing to do was.
Except... that wasn't really true, was it? Her mother had never wanted for anything, and look at how she had turned out. And Zidane... Zidane had nothing. He was a poor thief, and he had been the truest, kindest person she had ever known. No, the world was infinitely more complex than that. There was no simplicity to having money or not having it, but still, she felt like she understood the working commoner much more now. Zidane would probably think she was a fool.
Oh, Zidane. She missed him so much. She kept asking after him, kept searching but he was nowhere to be seen. Every so often, even as she walked through the crowded city, she thought she saw a flash of blonde hair that reminded her of him, or something trailing that might be a monkey tail, but every time she tried to chase it down, it turned out to be nothing. A trailing ribbon. Another person.
Like just then. She saw something swish by, and her heart fluttered for a moment, before she told herself it was nothing. Just some loose trailing piece of clothing or something.
And then it moved. And she suddenly moved forward, and she saw through the crowd a figure. A figure waving kindly to those he passed. A figure who made the time for everyone, no matter how strange they were to him. A figure with the kindest heart she knew.
It was him. It was unmistakable.
Her heart beat in her chest and she felt her legs go weak, and suddenly, she bolted. She ran as fast as she could, pushing her way through the crowd. There was something so familiar about that, but she didn't care, not in that moment, and she desperately forced people apart even as she thought she lost sight of him for a moment. Again, her heart fluttered. No! She was so close! She pushed past them, almost rudely, especially by her standards, drawing surprised, startled stares, but she didn't care in that moment, and then...
...there he was. Right in front of her. Zidane Tribal. In the flesh. She paused for a moment, standing where she was, as if unable to take him in. Unable to believe that it was truly happening. Afraid that any moment she would wake up. And then, without hesitation, she threw herself into his arms, wrapping them around him. Her eyes felt damp from joy as she slowly looked up at his. "You... you did it to me again.... You.... jerk," she said softly, thumping an annoyed fist against his chest. She then broke into a smile, one of those emotional smiles that was both happy and sad when you were fully overwhelmed with emotion. "I thought... I thought I'd lost you again," she said, her voice broken. And then she said nothing else, and hugged him as tightly as she could, resting her head against his chest...
You'd think with all the problems in this world, there'd be more answers. It's not fair... but that's the way things are.

Simultaneously, Zidane suffered both a heart attack and a sudden overwhelming sense of relief (with a pinch of dread, more on that later) as Garnet had flung herself onto him. He looked down as she punched his chest, half smiling, the shock wearing off as he finally wrapped his arms around her, closing his eyes.
He was glad she was with him. So glad.
But it wasn't safe here. His smile faded only slightly as his mind bounced between joy from finding her safe and sound, to slight panic about something happening to her, here. He slightly broke the embrace after regaining his composure. He let out a sigh of relief, and looked down to her.
"We really gotta stop meeting like this, y'know?" he muttered, kissing the top of her head before stepping back. "How long? Since you… showed up? I only just heard about you, recently." Perks of being so friendly and sneaky meant that you had information gathering skills that made a bustling city block a library for him, even if he had to hide in a barrel of gysahl greens to listen in.
He… hadn't quite gotten the smell off of his clothes.
He broke the embrace and grasped her hands in his, allowing himself a full smile before tilting his head. "Whaddya say we ditch the crowd? There's a lot we gotta catch up on, I'm sure."
It still felt surreal. Showing up in this whole other world. Finding himself lost, again. This time, there wasn't a troupe of Thief-spians to take him in. For the most part, he's gone it alone, moving with troupes and caravans from one place to another, unable to find any indication of how he got here, and only hearing the dreadful reality that it was a one way trip.
But, his Garnet was here. Despite everything, he felt like he could do anything, now. The vigor he felt storming Memoria with his friends swelled within, and his forced smile finally broke into his trademark smirk.

Zidane had a quip. Of course he had a quip. Zidane always seemed ready to smile, no matter the situation. It was one of the things Garnet loved about him. After a childhood being raised being told that life was entirely serious, she craved fun, and Zidane was definitely that. Still, she could barely believe he managed to have a joke ready for finding her after so long, again. Of course, two could play at that game. Just because Garnet had been raised to be entirely serious didn't mean that she was, and that had been before she had spent time travelling with Zidane and the others. She looked at him, a smirk on her face and her hands on her hips. "Oh? Are you saying you don't want to meet me anymore?" she asked, an eyebrow raised as if in disapproval. She knew exactly what he meant really, of course, she just wanted to see him squirm, even if it was only for a moment.
Of course, any sass or joking at him didn't last for long, and she retreated into his arms, letting him kiss her head. He seemed to say that they should find somewhere else, and Garnet supposed it was a little public for a display of affection, but she hardly minded. She had missed him so much she didn't care if they were on stage in front of thousands of people. Uh, which she supposed for most couples was a hypothetical example and not a 'last time we did this' thing, but, well, Garnet was used to living life in the spotlight. And she knew there were times when appearances didn't matter. Like when being reunited with the man you loved and the saviour of your entire world in one.
"It's been... a month or two, I think," she answered, frowning a little. The passage of time had been difficult to mark. She self consciously was focusing on making her words a little less formal. Almost two years of being Queen of Alexandria had led her to slip back into her formal mannerisms, but she had never forgotten the lessons Zidane taught her, and she wanted to demonstrate as much.
"Did you have somewhere in mind?" she asked, with a playful smile. That seemed typical of Zidane. He probably already knew everybody in town and was everybody's best friend. She certainly was sure he had a place to stay and a hideout and probably an adopted family like Tantulus already. Zidane always made friends everywhere he went, confident and easy going, never second guessing himself like Garnet did. That was definitely one of the many things she admired about him too. Just being in his presence again made everything feel so much better. With Zidane's confidence on her side, she felt like she could do anything.
She couldn't quite hold it in any longer, and before he could answer, she retreated back into his arms, her head against his chest. "I've... missed you, so much..." she said quietly, honestly, all playful pretence gone.
You'd think with all the problems in this world, there'd be more answers. It's not fair... but that's the way things are.
❞
The air of formality (that she was actively trying to avoid) reminded Zidane of the time Tantalus went to kidnap her. It sparked a bit of a grin, watching her fight it off, going back to her casual tones, before she agreed to go somewhere quieter. The crowd had already erupted in several Awwwws and some whistles, and Zidane wanted to catch up with her.
But, as per usual, he was really hoping that this wasn't all a dream.
He smiled at her, bowing his head. "And I've missed you, my Garnet." he said quietly, taking her hand, and leading her through the streets. As they moved past bustling crowds, Zidane cast a few waves at shopkeepers that he had run errands for, and dodged a few glances from local women that had regarded him as quite the hot topic as of late. He found out that being up front when skirt chasing did work best, but when you pull the mysterious card, it somehow makes you more irresistible.
They would come up on an alleyway, and Zidane would lead her down, pointing ahead to what looked like a dingey, old closet at the end. They'd reach the door, and Zidane would release her hand to stand up straight, his tail giving a dramatic flip as he'd bow.
"I know these quarters may not be fit for a Queen, but…" he would open the door, revealing an admittedly cozy space within, set up much like his place in Lindblum. "This has been home for… well, since I got here." He stepped to the side to allow her to walk in, admittedly a bit humbled. He lived in the damn Castle for a number of months before his airship was ripped apart during his arrival to Zephon, and he just couldn't get used to it. He'd venture out often to visit the city, and more or less go patrol with Steiner when he would walk the streets. The rest of the time, he'd spend with Garnet, seeing her take her duties as Queen with a grace that he knew only she would have.
But, he also knew that his time as a domestic errand boy wouldn't last for long. He had things he needed to do. He needed to find Kuja, again. He needed to find the others, if they were even there.
He needed to find out just what he was brought there for.
But, right now, this was time for her. This was time for the love he thought he had lost.

Garnet couldn't hide a smile and a blush as he told her he'd missed her. She slipped her hand into his and followed along beside him. This felt good. This felt right. She felt like the huge part of her that had been missing, not only since her arrival here, but in the intervening years when she'd lived without Zidane, believing him to be dead, was filled. And this time, she hoped it was for good. She didn't know if she could face losing him again.
But concern over losing him wasn't something she was going to feel today. No, she wasn't going to let herself. Not after all this time. Right now, she just wanted to feel happiness. She wanted to be so glad that he was back, and she was. She wasn't going to fret. She wasn't going to worry. Even if that was her nature. She was just going to enjoy the moment.
After all, that's what Zidane had taught her to do, right?
"Dagger," she corrected him when he called her 'Garnet'. "I've been going by Dagger again. Honestly, I'm not sure why. It's not like anybody here knows who Garnet Til Alexandros is. It just... felt right. Remembering the lessons you taught me to blend in, forgetting being a Queen and just being... me," she explained.
She watched the ease with which he waved to the others with a smile of pride, even if she might not have been entirely happy about how some of the other girls were looking at him. That was Zidane. A whole new city, a whole new world, and he was already making friends with everybody he met. Garnet felt a little awkward. She had been there for two months now, and she hadn't made anywhere near the connections Zidane had made. She knew that she was polite, she thought that she was friendly, but to Zidane, making friends came as naturally as breathing. She supposed that she could never quite be like that. It was one of the many reasons she loved him so much. He was so outgoing, so friendly, so kind. She envied, admired and loved him all in one.
She did however roll her eyes playfully a little when he commented that his new abode wasn't fit for a queen. Why did people always say that to her? Especially the people who knew her. "Oh, well, if it is not fit for a queen, then I am afraid I find myself quite uninterested in you. Return when you are a Prince and you have a castle to best suit my station," she replied, her voice dropping into full 'Queen Garnet' mode with added snobbery. Of course, she couldn't keep it up for long, and she broke into a laugh, smiling and giggling. "Zidane, how many nights did I spend crammed in a tent with everyone?" she asked, voice back to normal. "I'm pretty sure we slept in Qu's Marsh at least once. Oh, and don't forget on an alien planet. Not to mention, I'm fairly sure this place is bigger than my accommodations at the church where I've been staying. Believe me, I'm not the little girl who thought she should have her own separate room at the inn anymore." She cringed a little when she remembered her reaction when they had first arrived at the inn in Kalm. A typical spoiled princess. Oh, she had learned and she adapted, but it was still a little embarrassing to look back on.
And then she slipped into his arms. Because it felt like the most natural thing in the world. "I could stay here. With you. Forever," she told him honestly. "I don't need castles and gowns and tiaras. I never have. Everything I've ever wanted is right here in this room." It was the truth, of course. Well, the truth now, maybe there had been a time when all Garnet had cared about was being the perfect princess, but that time had passed. But then she hesitated. Because, while all of that was true, there was something else hanging over her. "But... I am Queen. I feel... responsible, for the people of Alexandria. There is still a lot I need to fix back home. Alliances that are still fragile. Rebuilding to be done. We need to find a way back home, even if..." she paused, and she smiled. "...in truth, I might not mind if I get to be Dagger just a little bit longer."
Her face fell slightly more serious, however, even as she rested in his arms. "There are... other things too. Things you need to know." She didn't say his name. Not yet. But Kuja was on her mind. Kuja was back. Mikoto too, which she knew Zidane would want to know, but Kuja was their main issue. Privately, she wondered what Zidane would make of that. He had made his peace with Kuja, hadn't he, at the end? What would he do knowing that he survived?
