[attr=class, bulk] Love seemed contradictory. It was a thing that made you smile and cry. It made you happy and sad. And it made you feel safe and insecure. It was unexplainable and could only be felt. Mikoto wondered if she would know if she was experiencing this. If she even could do so. It sounded like a weakness, if it could exercise such control over you. [break][break] She supposed the closest thing she could relate it to was missing the genomes. Her peers were all she had and could not help but worry about their safety while she was away. Was that love? She frowned a little as she thought about. [break][break] But it was clear whatever this love was, Garnet was in it with Zidane and she most certainly wanted to find him. [break][break] Mikoto curiously look at Garnet. She apparently thought what Mikoto said was amusing. Nor was she sure why Garnet did not want to see her in the morning. Did Gaians under go some unsightly transformation or ritual then? [break][break] She eyed Garnet’s blue ribbon and she seemed to soften up at the sight. Mikoto silently accepted her help with a gentle nod. It would be quicker and more efficient to accept help. She had no idea what Garnet was talking about. Base powders...foundations….Was she polishing her face to be smooth as a metal without the shine? [break][break] “My face will be pink?” Mikoto did not sound so sure. She did not want to walk around red as Terra’s moon. She did like pink though. But Garnet’s face seemed to look natural. Perhaps it was okay to let her handle it. “It is my favorite color.” She conceded, though it felt a little cautious. [break][break] Mikoto padded lightly along the street. She was finally getting used to all this hustle and bustle of the streets. In fact, as the light began to wane, it seemed the streets were less busy. Mikoto eyed the windows of the shops with curiosity. She was trying to determine which one had these powders. She finally found one with containers and vials with skin-toned colors. The colors varied from pale peaches to browns to reds. “This one?” Mikoto pointed at the shop, turning to look at Garnet for a confirmation.

Mikoto seemed to soften a little, and Garnet felt like she was making progress. She had almost forgotten that Mikoto had been sent by Kuja, and this quest to try and help Mikoto find herself, to find something that made her comfortable expressing herself, was something that Garnet had to admit she was enjoying a little. It was good to see Mikoto coming out of her shell a little, and if Garnet was entirely honest, it was quite nice to get a chance to be an ordinary girl for a change. Yes, Garnet was something of an expert in cosmetics, she was a queen and a former princess, of course she was, but this kind of 'girly' shopping, looking for a new look for somebody, it was actually something she had rarely experienced, she had always kept the same look, even on the road, and she was enjoying it a little.
She smiled lightly when Mikoto panicked that her face might be pink. Somebody else might have laughed, but Garnet had made enough naive mistakes when she had first left Alexandria not to mock her for the simple misunderstanding. "No, Mikoto, your face won't be pink. But we can use shades of pink to give it subtle pink highlights. Your lips could be pink, for example, and you could have a soft pink blush so your cheeks are tinted pink. You could even have pink eye-shadow if you wanted. You see how my eyelids are slightly darker than my skin tone? That's make-up as well. You could have yours pink, if you wished," she suggested as they walked. "Have you thought about nail polish?" she asked, before realising it might require a little more explanation. "It's... paint for your fingernails. Look, like mine," she removed her leather glove, revealing her manicured, pink nails beneath, still as they were during her duties as Queen. "We could do that to your nails if you'd like," she suggested cheerfully.
Garnet stopped outside the shop Mikoto had found, and looked inside. "Yes, this looks like a good place to start," Garnet smiled. "Now, our first job is finding you a base foundation that matches your skin tone. I... always had stylists in the castle, and I cannot remember a time when I did not know my skin shade, but I once heard one of my handmaidens discussing, and they said an excellent trick is to try the powder on the back of your hand. If it matches your skin tone, then you shall know that it's right for your face. So let's see what we can find," Garnet said, the previous tensions gone as she led Mikoto inside. She had to admit, she was definitely enjoying herself...
[attr=class, bulk] Mikoto still seemed uncertain about trusting a Gaian with this work. Just like she was still unsure if Zidane’s pink creature wanted to devour her. But, she listened to Garnet’s explanation that her face would not all be pink. Just a little pink. Mikoto wasn’t sure this make up experience was for her. But...it was part of the task. Part of her wished Kuja was here to help with this too. He was beautiful and it was his idea. It felt like he knew all about this polishing of a person’s face and odd practices. [break][break] “I don’t know. I like my skin the way it is.” The more Garnet suggested, the more she was hesitant. This was all too new. “I need to see it.” She said honestly. Pink was her favorite color, but it didn’t mean she thought all of her should be pink. Accessories were one thing. But this felt like a different level as if she was transforming her face. She observed Garnet’s face as she kept pointing out the unnatural points of it. Accents to enhance the face to how she wanted it seemed. [break][break] Nail polish? Her wide eyes turned to look at her nails now. Weren’t nail beds already pink? But she supposed it did give nails a cleaner look to them. [break][break] She was surprised that this was only a place to start, according to Garnet. Will this task take long? Or was everything she needed not in the store? She already felt restless, even if she outwardly didn’t show it. She followed Garnet inside and they were immediately greeted by the store attendant. “Hello. Looking for anything specific?” [break][break] Mikoto turned to the store attendant unblinkingly, “Foundation that matches my skin tone.” It’s what Garnet said was needed first, right? The store attendant seemed unnerved at the expression, but she continued, “Oh. Um. Yes. This way. Full coverage or…” She saw Mikoto’s eyes uncomfortably burrowing into her questioningly. “I see. Well you have healthy looking skin. I think you probably could go light…” She turned to Garnet instead. “And you? Did you need some help?”

Mikoto really did seem nervous, and it was quite sweet, in a way. Garnet felt sorry for her. She knew what it was like, being out of your comfort zone, and embracing a situation that should be ordinary but to you was daunting. She'd felt that way the first time she had to share a room in an inn, or the first time she had to eat out for food. And going to a tavern for the first time she thought she might cry if she didn't put on a brave face! So she understood, but somehow, Mikoto saying she liked her skin how it was broke Garnet's heart even more. "Don't worry, Mikoto, if you decide to go through with it, it'll just be a light cover. It helps reduce the shine of your skin, stops blemishes showing, that kind of thing. We won't be hiding your natural skin, it is very nice. And remember what I said, you don't have to do this. If you don't like the idea, you don't have to do it at all," Garnet said, trying her best to be supportive. Being raised a princess, Garnet didn't think twice about wearing make-up, but when you tried to explain it to somebody who was quite literally an alien, she was realising that it must sound absurd. 'Oh, well, you see, we apply a powder like a paint that is already the same colour as our skin anyway all over our face'. It wasn't exactly logical sounding...
"Oh no, I'm fine, thank you," Garnet smiled politely as the shop assistant approached her. She felt quite pleased with herself, like she was being quite savvy. She was handling this shopping situation like a pro; which she supposed she was now, but it still made her feel good when she thought about how far she had come. "But this is my friend, Mikoto. She's never worn any kind of make-up before, but would like to try some. Perhaps you could assist her? I think she may need some guidance," Garnet offered with a polite smile. Better this store assistant than Garnet after all, and truth be told, Garnet would feel more relieved in handing over the situation to a professional. Oh, she'd remain there to support Mikoto, but she was finding the entire process rather stressful, and really struggling to explain things to the girl. She hoped the store keeper might have some more luck. And if not, at least, it gave Garnet a temporary break.
[attr=class, bulk] Blemishes? Garland would not create a genome with such a thing. But, she supposed if she met some hazards it was possible to get them. Hiding these weaknesses probably kept the image of strength. Or maybe it was a protective barrier for the skin. Mikoto pondered the benefits. What did it hurt to dabble in these human customs? Isn’t that what she came to the city for - to quench her curiosity? [break][break] Garnet continued to voice her expertise on the matter. This practice must be the same on Gaia. Garnet didn’t even look in the window skeptically. Perhaps, even the same instruments and ingredients were used? Mikoto slowly shook her head, eying the foreign objects. “It is my task,” she stated simply. She was going to do this. [break][break] Mikoto looked curiously at all the different shades in an assortment of colors. There were even shades that did not appear to be of natural tones. So many choices and decisions. How did one determine the proper one’s to buy. Something about similar skin tones and accent marks on eyes and lips according to Garnet. [break][break] She let the dark-haired female talk on her behalf. It seemed she would have to cede to Garnet and the shop assistant’s expertise. The shop assistant nodded at Garnet, “That’s not a problem.” She turned to Mikoto and tried a gentler approach, “My name is Heather. I will be helping you.” Mikoto absently stated her own name, curiously looking at the wares. Heather led the two ladies down some aisles. “Sit here, Mikoto.” She gestured for the chair at the end of the aisle. It was raised high and Mikoto looked at it curiously for a moment before climbing into it. [break][break] Heather studied Mikoto’s complexion for a moment, and Mikoto simply stared back at her without much expression. “I’ll be right back. I think I know which color.” But, then she paused for a moment. “May I ask what the budget is?” Mikoto was unsure how the prices worked here. But, she was also trying to be frugal with Kuja’s money. He was kind enough to supply her with his gil, it would not do for her to spend all his resources. Mikoto pondered for a second before looking at Garnet for some help. “Something low-cost.” She said quietly, her eyes turning back to the lady. [break][break] The shopkeeper noticed that look and waited a second to see if Garnet would say something more. She then left down the aisle to go collect some supplies. She came back with a small basket of supplies and set it on a table next to Mikoto. Heather took Mikoto’s hand and began to test some colors on the underside of Mikoto’s wrist, before showing Mikoto the colors she was trying. “I think the left shade is the best one for you?” Heather stated, pointing lightly at the one she picked. It seemed she wanted Mikoto to make a decision and Mikoto would only nod her head yes, glancing once more to Garnet. How did she know the right shade? “The one that is the same color as my skin. Yes?”

Garnet felt her stomach knot slightly as Mikoto repeated that this was her task. It took her a few moments to untangle why that had made her so nervous before she understood. Mikoto was here because of Kuja, she was doing something she didn't want to do because of Kuja, and if she was willing to do this, what else was she willing to do? Today it was buying make-up, sure, but tomorrow, it could be destroying Alexandria, murdering Zidane in his sleep, or trying to steal her Eidolons once again. It absolutely baffled her, how Mikoto could happily work for the man who had destroyed her planet, while Garnet, Zidane and the others, who had risked their lives to save Mikoto and her people, were barely worth the genome's time.
The feeling only got worse when Mikoto seemed to ask for something 'low cost'. She didn't even want to spend Kuja's gil! Yes, Garnet had said she'd ask about his gil for him, but she hadn't been entirely serious, and if Mikoto had the opportunity to spend it, she should. How did a genome even understand the concept of money? It was just all so infuriating. To see Mikoto so much closer to a man as evil as Kuja, a man who had done the terrible things he'd done, than anybody who actually cared about her.
Perhaps she shouldn't have done it. Mikoto was clearly nervous, and looking to her for advice, but Garnet needed to step outside. The entire situation was so absurd it was beginning to get to her. There she was, helping an ally of her greatest enemy shop for make-up? She had thought somehow that if she could help Mikoto, she could win her over, get her away from Kuja, do the right thing, not just for herself, but for Zidane too, but in that small moment, she felt like she saw the task was impossible. She gave Mikoto a slightly forced smile.
"I'm sure that it's fine. Heather will help you find the right tone. I'll... wait outside," she said simply, excusing herself and stepping out into the fresh air.
She stood for a moment, almost like a statue, outside the shop. She could just walk away and abandon Mikoto, but that wouldn't do. No, she had to see this through. For Zidane. She craned her neck, looking at the sky, and sighed heavily. She wasn't sure that she could do this. Not alone. Everything she tried just drove Mikoto further away...
[attr=class, bulk] Mikoto could see Garnet was not fully present. Almost like Kuja had been. He had been in close proximity, but still felt so far away from her. Did Mikoto do something wrong? Her teal eyes watched as Garnet turned her back and walked away. Much like Mikoto herself did when she was done wasting her energy in a fruitless task. If Garnet had not wanted to attend Mikoto, then she did not have to. Was it their disagreements? Was it because Mikoto would not turn away from a member of her home? Mikoto had already determined that Garnet would not focus on anything but the negatives of her situation - past and current. [break][break]
The store attendant said something twice to get her attention again. Mikoto nodded at the proper tone selection and had her face powdered lightly with a brush. She was shown a reflection in the mirror and Mikoto could still see the same face staring back at her. It was a little more evenly colored than before. She realized now that it did not polish off her skin nor did her face transform beyond recognition. She eased a little as the store attendant set it aside. [break][break]
Mikoto then struggled with the eye makeup, unsure if she could trust the store attendant with putting sharp and spiky implements near her eyes. A Terran she would be fine with, but a foreigner...? Did they have the knowledge and skill to wield such instruments? Without anyone there to reassure her and with the store attendant not being confident enough to coax her, the endeavor was given up. Though Mikoto asked her to put them aside. Perhaps later she would ask Kuja about them. A shade of lipstick was provided in a darker pink color. Mikoto paid the attendant and left the store with the materials. She had been partially successful. [break][break]
She noticed that Garnet had been waiting outside this whole time. Odd. Why would she wait out here if Mikoto was nothing but a bother? “You don’t have to stay.” Mikoto stated, wondering if Garnet wanted permission. She remembered Zidane telling her to make friends and Quina telling her that it was important to do so. She also recalled Garnet's need to look for Zidane. “I am not Zidane.” She said, her eyes looking up at the sky with Garnet. She was created in his likeness. Created to welcome him home and support him. But it seemed Zidane had found his own support prior to arriving to Terra. “I do not know where he is. But Quina is looking too.” She turned her eyes to look down at her bags. Her thoughts turned back to Quina’s definition of friend. That they did not kill you. They also shared food, told stories, and helped each other. Garnet did those things, even if they both had differences. Mikoto took out the gift Quina gave her - the small Angel Snack that she thought was decorated alluringly. “Quina told me that if I was not feeling well, to eat this. It seems you need it more than I.” [break][break] Mikoto offered it to Garnet. Regardless of whether Garnet took it or not, Mikoto turned to walk away. She did not want to continue being a bother to Garnet. Mikoto knew the Gaians did not find her comfortable to be around. She was unable to change that.

[attr="class,beatext"]
The wait was difficult. Every moment Garnet asked herself exactly why she was waiting. Yes, Mikoto was Zidane's sister, in a sense, anyway, and yes, she knew Zidane would want to help her, but hadn't Mikoto betrayed everything they had tried to instill in her? By returning to Kuja, hadn't she twisted the knife into Garnet, specifically. Nobody had been as wronged by Kuja as Garnet had been, she thought. Nobody had lost everything they had ever had and had their own power used to do it like she had. She had every reason to walk away, didn't she?
Why couldn't Mikoto see that? She knew that Genomes had an... unconventional upbringing, but she still had a soul, didn't she? She still had feelings? How could she continue to return to Kuja, brother or not? It just didn't make any sense to Garnet...
And then, in a flash, in an instant, a memory hit her out of nowhere...
"Uh, Dagger? She extracted eidolons from you and started a war!" Zidane pleaded as they stood on the branch of the Iifa Tree, her mother's fleet advancing towards Kuja and his silver dragon in the distance. "I still don't want her to die!" Garnet replied. "But she didn't care if you lived or died! You don't have to call her mother anymore!" Zidane's voice rose with desperation. "She's my only mother! I don't care if you don't understand!" Garnet yelled back, equally desperate.
...and in that moment, she thought, maybe she understood. Maybe the problem wasn't that Mikoto felt nothing at all, maybe it was that she felt too much. Kuja was her family, her only family here, and the gods knew that Brahne had been responsible for just as many crimes as Kuja. Garnet hadn't been able to stand back and see her mother die, no matter how evil her actions.
How could she fault Mikoto for doing the same?
It seemed Mikoto had read her mind, or at least, understood her hesitance to remain, and knew her thoughts. Another sign that Mikoto had far more empathy than she let on, or perhaps even Mikoto knew herself. She stated that she wasn't Zidane, and while that was obvious, Garnet felt that it only drove her most recent realisation home. "You're right, you're not Zidane. But... you're not Kuja either," Garnet pointed out, pausing to take a breath. The news that Quina was also present was somewhat startling, but Garnet felt it was the wrong time to dwell on that fact. She'd have to ask Mikoto about them later, see if she couldn't track them down. Quina was... difficult... to be around sometimes, but the more allies the better. She looked at the offered snack from Mikoto, and took it, because it would be rude not to. "Mikoto... thank you..." she said after a moment. Mikoto went to walk away, but Garnet hurried by her side.
"Wait, Mikoto, listen..." she tried to say, her voice nervous, far more the shy princess she had once been than either confident Dagger or the powerful Queen, "I... I know we're very different people. I was raised... a princess, with values on things... you don't understand, and you were raised... in a world I can't understand, taught a way of thinking about things that I... will never be able to comprehend, but..." she paused. She had no idea what she was trying to say, not really. "But I also think... that we are perhaps more similar than either of us would think. We were both raised in worlds that... sheltered us or hid us away from how the world really works, we are both... finding our own paths in a new world that we do not always understand, and we both... sometimes struggle to understand other people. And, I think, in a way... we both... have love for... family that have done bad things. Love that... nobody else can understand. I... loved my mother... Queen Brahne... Even after... everything she had done. Her death... really hurt me. And nobody else understood. Even those closest to me, even Zidane, could not understand why I cared after all she had done. But I did..." she paused again. "I guess, what I'm saying is that... I can not, and will not, ever be able to understand why... you remain close to Kuja, but I do know what it's like to feel that way, and to not be understood."
She smiled a little, and picked up her pace, until she was walking alongside Mikoto. "Come on, I said I'd help you until your task was done, and we're not finished yet, are we?" she smiled. "Your make-up looks nice, by the way. Did they show you how to apply it?" Garnet noticed that she wore none around her eyes, but that was fine. Just because Garnet did didn't mean Mikoto had to. "What do you say we share this?" she asked, offering the treat she had given, smiling. She was redoubling her efforts, yes, because she thought she was finally understanding...
Mikoto tilted her head curiously at Garnet. Of course she was not Kuja. She looked nothing like him, even though they were both genomes. Though, it seemed people kept mistaking her for Zidane due to her similar appearance to him. Kuja was the prototype genome, but it was Zidane’s image they were made after. Once more, Zidane’s woman had the correct perception.
[break][break] Garnet took the Angel Food from Mikoto and she figured this was the end of their uncomfortable exchange. But, Garnet seemed eager to still follow beside her despite being given permission to go about her business. Perhaps, she wasn’t looking for permission? Mikoto did not know how to resolve this encounter.
[break][break]
Once more, Garnet brought up the past. At Garnet’s request for Mikoto to listen, the blonde genome stopped in her tracks and turned those nearly unblinking eyes to Garnet. Garnet had her undivided attention. Then Mikoto tried to understand, but these human concepts were difficult for her. ‘Princess’ seemed to be a very important part of Garnet she kept bringing up. She understood the humans organized themselves in hierarchies, but the meaning of each role escaped her grasp. She seemed to love this ‘mother’ person and ‘family’. But this variant felt different from her love for Zidane. She was confused, but she tried hard to keep up.
[break][break] In the end, understanding these concepts did not matter. She found that Garnet was trying to find commonalities between them. That they both were struggling in unfamiliar territory after living within set boundaries. It seemed her mother had done similar bad things and she still remained close to this person even in death.
[break][break] And it all came back down to Kuja. So, he was really the focus of her discomfort this entire time. Mikoto understood Kuja took things from the Gaians. Taking resources and their peers from them probably did not make them happy. But, it was his job in order to help Terra survive. Mikoto saw both sides and tried to understand both.
[break][break] Mikoto hesitated. She did not want to stir anymore trouble, so she remained silent despite the many questions and words she wanted to say. Her and Garnet were not going to be in agreement with Kuja, so there was no point in wasting her breath. But it seemed the Gaian wanted a truce with the Terran. This was the bet Mikoto would get to letting the subject go.
[break][break] And yet.
[break][break] “I don’t know why I remain close to him.” She remembered calling him down to meet with her. How he appeared with bramble in his hair, but still that beautiful glow in the moonlight. She had been taken by surprise to see his appearance had no likeness to her own face. But she had not known what she wanted. To be taught by someone who understood what it was like to step into an alien world? To see the person who not only destroyed their home, but let the genomes know that there was more to life beyond those walls. Beyond their original purpose. If she stayed near him, would she find out this new reason to live? “I just want to understand him.” She knew she said this before. “I was built to take care of genomes.” She remembered watching Zidane rush to Kuja’s side at the Iifa tree. Genomes were built to aid one another. It was deep in their genes. She shook her head knowing Garnet would not understand any of this. Seemed she was wasting her breath anyway. Bluntly, she stated, “It does not matter. We seemed to reach a mutual understanding, so I don’t see the point in continuing this conversation.”
[break][break] Mikoto seemed to look at Garnet with a giant question mark over her head. “I thought my task was complete.” Mikoto opened her bag to show Garnet what she purchased. “Is this not sufficient?” Mikoto looked up at her when complimented about her makeup. Mikoto was unsure of the proper response. “I am glad you enjoy my powder. I observed her application process.”
[break][break]
She looked down at the snack Garnet offered to share. “Is it right to eat it now? It's supposed to be ate when one feels bad.”

Mikoto turned, and at least listened as Garnet spoke. It seemed perhaps they were connecting, or at least having something of a moment. At least now Mikoto listened. She spoke about not knowing why she wanted to be close to Kuja, and tried to find a logical reason. Somehow, despite who she was speaking about, despite the evil of the man, Garnet managed a small smile at this. Only a small one, but it was there, flashing on her lips for a moment. "I do understand, Mikoto. Logic tells me I should hate my mother. That I shouldn't have cared that she died. That I shouldn't have tried to save her. But I did. And I still miss her, almost every day. Sometimes, you can't help how you feel," she explained, hoping that Mikoto would understand that she was reaching out to her. She was trying to show Mikoto that even though she hated Kuja more than anything, she could understand her. Mikoto could feel safe around Garnet, despite her feelings for Kuja. Although, she couldn't resist adding; "Although, if you would like to extend your care of other genomes to helping me find Zidane any time, it would be appreciated."
Mikoto looked a little confused when Garnet offered to continue helping. Yes, Mikoto was noticeably missing any mascara or eyeshadow, but that wasn't what Garnet had meant. She really didn't much mind if Mikoto didn't wear make-up, and part of her was pleased that Mikoto wasn't trying to look as tacky as Kuja.
"Oh. I thought you were shopping for perfume as well. Did you find some?" Garnet asked. She had assumed she'd help Mikoto until the conclusion, but perhaps this was Mikoto's way of gently trying to get rid of her. She paused, and smiled when Mikoto asked about whether or not it was the right time to eat the snack. Truthfully, Garnet didn't know the tradition behind such a thing, but she figured it didn't matter.
"Well, I miss Zidane, and am feeling very lost. I could use some cheering up. And I'm sure you miss the other genomes too. If it makes us happier, it has to be worth trying, doesn't it?" she smiled gently, breaking the snack in two and handing half to Mikoto.
