Life is but a passing dream but the death that follows is eternal
Seymour could have never imagined Sonora. Not even in his wildest fever dreams nor in his imaginings of Old Zanarkand. There was nothing like it in Spira, nothing but an ancient, forgotten memory. Not even the Al Bhed, with their old, forbidden machina could compare to this.. Perhaps their hidden, rumored city of Home was similar. But Seymour had never seen it. He didn’t even know if Home was real. Here in Sonora, there was machina everywhere, great machines powering the city and its way of life. Machina vehicles zoomed past them constantly, things Aerith called cars.
He was completely in awe. He knew his mouth gaped open as he looked around, looked up at the towering metal buildings and past at the seemingly endless sprawl of the city. He barely even felt the frigid chill of the city, so different from the heat of Provo. He was too distracted by all the sights, smells, and sounds to care that he wasn’t properly dressed for a city where snow still gathered in dirty heaps on the side of the road. Seymour had never actually seen snow before. He’d heard about the snowy Mountains of Gagazet, and how they were blanketed in white year-round. The snow here in Sonora was grey and wet. It squelched around his shoes as he stepped through the piles and dirtied the ends of his robes.
Seymour barely registered the strange expressions and comments he was receiving. People whispered about him, calling him a tourist or a simpleton. If he hadn’t been so distracted by everything else he might have cared, he might have retaliated against their ire. But now, he found he didn’t care. Instead, he stared at Aerith. She looked so at home in this place. After all, she had said this was her home. And before that, there’d been another, similar city she’d called home.
“You live here?” his voice was a hoarse whisper. “You can use all these machines,” he made sure to use the proper term. “And nothing happens? You can use them without fear?” Despite hearing from Yuna that Sin and Yevon didn’t exist in this realm, he was still having a hard time believing this city could truly function. “Back where I came from, machines were said to be evil. They brought ruin to cities.” A small motorized vehicle with two wheels and only one occupant suddenly flew towards them on the walking path. It almost reminded Seymour of a mechanized chocobo and he struggled to get out of its way. He stumbled and his robe tore slightly at the hem.
The rider of the mechanized thing hurled an insult as he disappeared. Seymour wanted to send a spell after the man. He was sorely tempted, angered as he brushed off dirty snow and righted himself. But he stopped himself just short of hurling a fire behind the man and his contraption. Aerith wouldn’t approve. He’d come to know the woman a bit on their travels. She probably wouldn’t be mad at him, but she’d be disappointed in him. And somehow, that was worse. So he contented himself with grumbling in annoyance and moving closer to the metal and brick buildings, amongst the flow of people traveling the great streets into Sonora.

The complete awe upon Seymour's face was quite amusing and rather touching to see. Aerith had spoken to him at length about what she knew about technology and her own experiences within Midgar to hopefully quell a little of his insatiable curiosity about it. What she had learned from him spoke of a world that abhorred such technological advances and seemed rather simplistic in their lifestyles. In all honesty, it reminded her of her own people and how they had always traveled the planet without settling anywhere for too long. Oh, there were some settlements for a more permanent residence, but her people had always relief on what Gaia gave to them and returned the favor by listening to the will of the planet and tending to its needs. [break][break]
But she was a city girl at heart and had always loved the steel sky. The word beyond Midgar had been a terrifying aspect for her when she had been forced with the group to leave Midgar. The endless expanse of that sky and the unknown possibilities it had all meant for her. Her ancestors had traveled Gaia as nomads and she had always stayed within one place for nearly the entirety of her life. Her smile was wide when she saw Seymour staring at her now in disbelief as they both ignored the insipid comments of the strangers. Honestly, so what if he was gawking like a tourist? It was not as if he was hurting anyone by doing so! Aerith wondered if Seymour had led a sheltered life as she had as a young girl. He had not been too eager to speak of his personal past and she had not pressed upon the matter. [break][break]
"For the most part, yes. We can use these machines without fear. Of course, some can be dangerous if used in the wrong way, but the same can be said for magic, too." Technology could be a very dangerous thing when placed in the wrong hands. Shinra had been killing the planet in their pursuit of easy convenience and taking over the world. The sudden appearance of a motorcycle caught her attention and she reached out to steady Seymour as he stumbled a little. "That was called a motorcycle. It's faster than even a chocobo, but I think I prefer riding a chocobo. They're just so cute! A dear friend of mine even has hair that resembles one a little!" [break][break]
It was easy for her to see that Seymour struggled with anger quite a bit. Aerith was glad that he calmed himself and simply muttered his displeasure. "The people here can be rude and rather ignorant to anything that happens beyond their own lives. Try to roll with the punches as much as you can. But I'll be here to help you through it." People hardly saw past their own issues and stresses to look to others and even to the troubles plaguing the world. Aerith was guilty of doing so until she had been swept away with Cloud and the rest of Avalanche and their race to save Gaia. Life had a way of being so unpredictable at times.
Life is but a passing dream but the death that follows is eternal
Seymour was still thoroughly intrigued by the city where machines seemed to power everything. It was more amazing than anything he could have ever conjured in his mind. Aerith compared the use of machines to magic, in that they could both be used incorrectly and dangerously. Seymour supposed it was an apt analogy. Much harm had also been done with magic throughout the ages. But magic had never spawned anything like Sin. At least, not that he was aware of.
The idiot speeding past him was apparently riding a motorcycle. He had to agree with Aerith that chocobos were superior. He didn’t have to risk running into things on a sentient bird. It was smart enough to avoid obstacles, unlike motorcycles. “People are usually rude and ignorant everywhere,” he muttered and straightened his damp robes. “That was true in Spira and Provo too.”
He tried to ignore the sheer amount of strangers passing them on the streets. Even Bevelle hadn’t generally had crowds like this. Sonora was utterly massive compared to anything he’d ever known and he wasn’t entirely sure he enjoyed the feeling of so many people pressing in around him. He gripped his staff tight like a lifeline and stared into the windows of shops and cafes as they walked past. Strange things were on sale, more machines he didn’t recognize. But there were familiar sights too, clothing stores and weapons shops featuring the recognizable swords and spears, alongside other machina weapons.
As they passed a small cafe, Seymour tried to hide the fact that his stomach rumbled loudly. Their traveling food hadn’t been all that filling and the smell of sweets and a rich, warm aroma that he couldn’t place made him realize suddenly how hungry he was. He hoped Aerith hadn’t noticed. “Where do you stay here?” he asked to try to distract himself. “Is there an inn?”

Aerith made a noise of acknowledgment at Seymour's statement. Sadly, there would always be rudeness and ignorance no matter where in the world one went. Or, well, another world entirely in this case! "But there are good people, too! You just need to keep an open mind and be optimistic about it," she stated firmly. Her lips soon curled into a smile as she resisted the urge to pat Seymour on the head. The youth was several inches taller than her as she barely stood at his chin in height. Sometimes she really wished she could have grown just a little taller! Then she could get angry without everyone laughing at her instead of taking her seriously! Wow, where was her train of thought even going at this point? [break][break]
The number of people that passed them by did not bother her, but she could see that it was overwhelming for Seymour. Aerith wondered how much of his life he had spent alone. It seemed an obvious thing to her, especially as she had spent several days traveling with him. Small mannerisms and evident ones. He relied quite heavily upon himself and no one else, he seemed to shy away from personable interactions with strangers, and he could be prone to anger when faced with something triggering. All of those were reasonable things! The young woman just hoped she was not introducing him too quickly to everything within Sonora. It could be quite a culture shock to those used to living a solitary or quiet life. [break][break]
The loud grumbling of Seymour's stomach had her giggling before she could help herself. Well, someone was eager to sample actual food for a change! Traveling rations really were not that filling and Aerith felt immense guilt whenever she attempted to hunt for food. Just--how could she not when a rabbit or deer would stare at her with such betrayal in their eyes? A hum of amusement escaped her as Seymour obviously tried to divert attention away from his grumbling stomach. "I can show you a nearby inn that will allow you to earn your keep in exchange for a room!" Emerald eyes glittered as she quickly darted in front of him and leaned forward with a knowing grin in place. "Buuuut I know for a fact you need some food! Follow me~" [break][break]
Already she was walking forward to a nearby cafe to satisfy both of their empty bellies. The aroma of freshly baked bread and sweets beckoned her forth like a siren call she had no desire to ignore. "My treat!"
Life is but a passing dream but the death that follows is eternal
"But there are good people, too! You just need to keep an open mind and be optimistic about it!" Seymour glanced down at her when Aerith uttered those hopelessly optimistic words. Had someone said that in Spira, he would have scoffed. But here? Well. Maybe it was true. After all, hadn’t Aerith helped him for no reason other than her own personal kindness? She smiled that carefree and open smile of hers and Seymour had to relax. He even forced a tiny smile of his own, though he knew the expression looked nowhere near as natural on his face as it did on hers.
As expected, the rumbling in his stomach didn’t go unnoticed by Aerith. The woman noticed everything. Sometimes that was good, and sometimes it was… well, still good but embarrassing. He heard her giggle in amusement even as he tried to distract her from the obvious sound. He inwardly cursed the half-human side of himself then as he felt a warmth spread on his cheeks. Full-blood Guado didn’t blush, but of course Seymour could with his mixed genes. Quite unfortunately too, as he tried to hide that from her as well. He knew he was likely to be just as unsuccessful as he’d been in hiding his rumbling stomach. Oh well.
“But-” he tried to protest as she darted around him and told him to follow. He didn’t get any more words out before Aerith was walking away, leading him to a nearby cafe. So he stammered incoherently but followed, left with no other choices. He couldn’t deny that the food smelled delicious, so he didn’t even try to argue again when she added, “My treat!” He just followed her with a familiar resignation into the little building. There were mercifully only a few other guests inside, settled at small tables around the stone floor. Some had mugs of a rich, dark liquid that sent fragrant steam into the air. Others had breads and pastries, some with glistening fruit.
Seymour’s stomach rumbled again and he didn’t even bother to try to hide it this time. “I don’t know what to order,” he muttered quietly to Aerith. He didn’t even know the name of most of the items on offer.

The protest went unheeded as she merely glanced over her shoulder at Seymour and winked with an impish smile in place. Nope! He was going to be bought a decent meal and he would like it! Goodness knew his stomach would certainly thank her for her generosity if he would not! There was such a resignation to him that reminded her of Cloud when she had first met him. As if he was not quite sure what to make of her but had resigned himself to his fate of being lead around by her. Were all men with the 'stoic' persona going on just prone to falling prey for her headstrong ways? Well, it made things easier for her! [break][break]
Aerith was hit with the scent of hot cocoa and freshly baked pastries the moment she opened the cafe door and she was sure anyone could see the hearts in her eyes. Fresh food! Honest-to-goodness fresh food that did not consist of rations of the haunting eyes of wildlife that continued to guilt her in her dreams. There were not too many people within the cafe for which she was grateful. Seymour still appeared to get somewhat overwhelmed when near too many people and this was a much smaller space than outside in the city. A quiet hum of amusement escaped her at the rumbling of her companion's stomach once more. [break][break]
Peering up at him, she was quick to smile again as she resisted the urge to poke him in the stomach just for a laugh. "That's why I'm here. I am your tour guide and aficionado on all things pastry-related to quell your hunger~" What would be the best thing to start off with? Something simple was often best for those unfamiliar with sweets. Aerith glanced back up at the menu as she took a few moments to figure out what to order them. Pastries were great but something more filling was also needed! [break][break]
Stepping up to the counter, she smiled brightly at the cashier before listing her order, "Two ham and swiss paninis, two medium-sized hot cocoas with whipped cream, and two slices of cheesecake, thank you!" With that settled, she paid the cashier before returning to Seymour and leading him over to an empty table. "Now we just wait for them to bring us our food."
[attr="class","sgoverlap"]Life is but a passing dream.
[attr="class","sgbody"]Seymour was uncomfortable. But he tried to hide it as he stood with Aerith and looked at the food on display. He had literally no idea what most of the items even were. There was bread, of course, but it was in shapes he didn’t recognize. And half the things in the display case looked to be coated in some type of sugar or glaze. He really didn’t know what to expect. So honestly he was glad that Aerith said she’d order for him. He’d have to trust that she wouldn’t pick something horrid. He just stood silently beside her, a tall and imposing presence, trying to hide his intense awkwardness. [break][break]
Aerith ordered confidently and brightly, rattling off a list of foods that overwhelmed. He caught on the word cheesecake. How in the world was there a cake made of cheese? That sounded terrible, but he supposed he’d have to wait and see. She’d been right about snow cones after all. He continued to follow her like a lost and confused child when she motioned to an empty table. Seymour sat stiffly in the metal chair across from her. [break][break]
“How do they make a cake out of cheese?” he finally asked, still caught on the illogical phrase. “And how long do we have to wait for the food?” [break][break]
Not long was clearly the answer. Seymour didn’t think there was any way they could have made all that food this fast, but here it was, appearing before him on a waiter’s tray. There was a mug of the sweet, rich-smelling liquid he’d noticed earlier, something warm with bread, and the cheesecake. He had been confused before. Now he was even more so. It didn’t even look like cheese! [break][break]
He decided the drink was the safest option to try first. The outside of the mug was warm. Aerith had called this hot chocolate, so he wasn’t surprised by the temperature. He took a small drink and savored the comforting flavor. The whipped cream was delicious too, though it seemed to be quite messy. He wiped off his mouth with the back of his sleeve but didn’t seem to notice there was still a spot on his nose. [break][break]
“I think I like this better than the snow cones,” he commented. “But that may be because it’s so cold here.”

Aerith was doing her best to restrain her laughter at Seymour's question on what a cheesecake was. It did sound quite silly for anyone to hear the first time, but it still surprised her just how sheltered her new friend was. Did Spira not have restaurants or cafes for people to eat out at? A part of her wished to ask to satiate her curiosity. No, there would be a better time to ask that question when he felt more comfortable about revealing more of his past to her. She could be forward but even she had some restraint when it mattered! Well, most of the time at any rate. [break][break]
The waiter had brought their food over rather quickly, but she was not too surprised. Most of these foods had been premade to serve throughout the day and sandwiches were easy enough to put together. Her green gaze settled on the mug of hot chocolate placed before her as she immediately reached for the divine beverage. Aerith allowed herself to be rather quiet for once as she simply observed Seymour try the drink first from what she had ordered for them both. She carefully took a long sip from her own mug as she made sure to keep any of the whipped cream from her face. [break][break]
The young woman nearly snorted into her mug when she noticed Seymour had missed the spot of whipped cream on his nose. Should she say something? It would be so amusing to just allow him to speak with it there. No, she should be a good friend and point it out to him. He would be so terribly embarrassed if someone else pointed it out to him before she did. Raising her finger, she tapped her own nose with an impish smile. "Missed a spot~" Placing her mug down, she reached to try the sandwich next to satiate her hunger. [break][break]
"Mm, hot chocolate is a great way to warm yourself! The city can be a bit colder than more open areas. You get used to it the longer you stay, though. This city is much more open than Midgar, at least." There were no slums beneath the plates to struggle beneath each day as the denizens that lived there continued to thrive as best as they could. No, there was no steel sky here to hide away beneath and grow accustomed to. Humming thoughtfully for a moment, she shook herself from her musings as she slyly slid the plate of cheesecake over to Seymour. "Try just one piece? I just know you'll like it!" [break][break]
[attr="class","sgoverlap"]Life is but a passing dream.
[attr="class","sgbody"]Seymour knew his face flamed red again as Aerith pointed to her own nose with a mischievous grin. He tried to ignore the flare of embarrassment as she told him he missed a spot and grabbed a cloth napkin to hurriedly wipe the remainder of the whipped cream off his nose. He hoped it hid some of his horrified expression as well. Why was he always doing something dumb? It seemed Aerith was constantly giggling at him for something. She was always good natured and never malicious, but he still despised the feeling of embarrassment. [break][break] She informed him that the city was cold. Yes, he’d already noticed it was far colder than anywhere he was used to in Spira. He was used to tropical and subtropical climates where his open and light robes were much more properly suited. Aerith also mentioned Midgar, the city she said she used to live in. They’d talked about their home worlds a bit on the journey from Provo to Sonora and from what she had said, Midgar sounded much like Sonora. It was a great city of metal and machina as well, but with a steel sky. He couldn’t even picture what that meant, not truly. “Unfortunately I think I’ll have to buy warmer clothes,” he commented ruefully, glancing down at his robes. “Good thing I still have some snow cone gil.” [break][break] Aerith slid the plate with the enigmatic cheesecake towards him, convincing him to try a slice. Seymour looked at it skeptically and poked at it with his fork. It was very soft. And unless he was just overwhelmed by the smell of the hot chocolate, it was sweet. He glanced up at the woman across from him, giving her one last narrow-eyed skeptical look before taking a tiny bite off the end of the slice. [break][break] He hadn’t known what to expect at all. But even with no expectation, he was still shocked. The cake was very soft and sweet. But there was a savory edge, which he assumed had to come from whatever cheese was in it. He tried another bite and considered. The first bite was shocking, but with the second he was able to formulate a better opinion. And he had to admit, Aerith was right again. As usual. “It is good,” he told her. “We have nothing like this in Spira. We have little other than fruits and vegetables.” Spira was a simple world with a simple life. They grew most of their food simply and prepared it just as simply. He took a few more bites of the cheesecake. “Do you know where a clothing shop would be?” he asked her. She hadn’t been in Sonora too long, but he hoped she’d be able to tell him where to look at least. He was already freezing, even inside.

[attr="class","ayab-text"] Was it bad to just want to reach out and pinch his cheeks? Because Aerith was so sorely tempted to reach out and pinch his cheeks. Seymour was quite bashful in his own way whenever he felted embarrassed over something. It allowed her to know that he was still growing used to social interactions with others. Aerith could greatly empathize with him over an isolated childhood. Her formative years had been spent within the labs of Shinra where her mother would be taken away each day for experiments while she only had her crayons and blank sheets of paper to keep her company. Well, that was not entirely true. The voices within the lifestream had also been able to speak with her at times to give more life to her drawings. [break][break]
"I'm sure we can find something that will keep you warm," Aerith reassured with a smile. Now she was eager to watch Seymour as he sampled the piece of cheesecake on his plate. The skeptical look he sent her way had her giggling again as she merely quirked her brow at him in a silent challenge. There was no possible way he would dislike the sweet treat! The young woman was quite pleased when she saw the puzzled expression on his face after the first bite before shock settled in. As if he could not quite believe that he did enjoy the treat when she had known that he would! A touch of smugness tinged her lips as she grinned at Seymour. [break][break]
Her expression morphed into a thoughtful one as he mentioned Spira once more. It really did sound like a more simple world compared to her own where Shinra had brought forth many technological conveniences. All derived from the harnessing of the lifestream to power such marvels. No, Spira sounded much more ecologically friendly than Gaia had been at the time. "I'm quite glad you enjoyed it! Experiencing new things can be really worthwhile," she stated firmly. "There's probably one nearby if we look around. Cities tend to have almost everything you need within just a city block of you!" [break][break]
