Was it a drug that had been given to her? A poison that affected memory? Perhaps she was under some sort of witchery? None of it made sense. But that didn't mean she could just give up. If others were affected by such turn of events, it meant something far bigger was at hand. Garnet had wandered far. Bu she had gone to further heights. She knew of it... But the memories were still dull. Why couldn't she remember?
"Are you going to go or what?"
It was with an impatient tone that the lost woman had allowed herself to go along with what was happening around her. "I'm so sorry. I must have let my mind get away from me. What am I doing exactly?" Garnet looked around and saw herself at a booth where she was in a line to sign her name for something. Looking up at the sign, brown eyes narrowed to get a better look. How the heck did she end up here? Shaking her head, she resolved to start being more present minded rather than letting her thoughts get away from her. This was a dangerous time to get lost in her head. She was away from home, alone and vulnerable. Garnet needed to stay sharp if she was to keep harm at bay. "Just sign up or get out of the line, lady!"
The tone was no longer irate. It was angry. Startled, she went ahead with the quill and scribbled her name and stepped out of line. Once she took a longer look around, she noticed the sparkling waters along the pier, the sun casting its magnificent rays along the broken surface of pristine waters. "How lovely. A soothing ride to clear my head might just be what I need." She would come out of this with a game plan. Only then could she figure out a way to get home and solve the mystery that plagued her.
It was with a little luck that she had managed to sell what jewelry she had on her, part of her queen's regalia. That crown of hers fetched some decent coin. Somehow, she knew to keep it hidden. Days prior, she had traded in that extravagant piece of fabric for something much more capable of blending in to the strange country she had been transported to. It was unlike the woman to be so unprepared... All of this was so foreign to her. What was this place called again? Was it a bad idea to ask where she was?
Well. She'd find out now. Walking up to the nearest person, she tapped them on the shoulder to offer a warm smile and a chuckle. "Forgive me but I'm a clumsy traveler. What is this place called again? I am a little turned around."
Caius had scarcely been in Provo's main city since the outbreak of the Starscourge. The disease held horrible memories for him considering it originated from his own world. But Caius knew that this was an irresponsible thing to do, especially as one of the leaders of the Dragonblades. He needed to help people across Serentestra. That was his job. And he needed to serve as an example to the others. He couldn't let his personal prejudices and fears keep him from doing that job, if he was to expect the others to do the same.
So here he was. The place looked... Different, from before. Last time he had been in the main city, he had just been passing through and hadn't really looked around much though. Now he was going to be here for a bit. The city was... Beautiful, honestly. He preferred Torensten, but this place had a charm to it that he couldn't deny. But Caius had been doing a lot of learning to slow down and appreciate what was around him lately, after nearly two years of running around the world doing jobs and moving on. Now he had a guild behind him, and people he was attached to.
How things had changed.
He had a job in the city though, and had been told to meet the contact at their abode. The quickest way there was the gondolas, apparently. Never having been on one before, he was a little bit apprehensive. But if he could learn how to fly on a winged beast, he could learn this too. So the mercenary steeled himself and prepared to go for it.
It wasn't long before a commotion started. Caius had been moving with what he could feel and hear around him, his head bent low and his eyes closed as he had been resting his eyes while waiting in line. But suddenly he began to hear someone badgering another to hurry up and sign up. He opened his eyes to find that an undecided person behind him had been the culprit. Shaking his head at the poor manners of whoever had spoken out, he would turn his head again.
A tap on his shoulder would cause him to turn though, and he blinked a few times as he looked around before looking down, recognizing the face of the indecisive woman from earlier. She asked where they were, and he blinked a few times. But her warm smile kept him from judging all that harshly.
"You're in Provo, miss" He spoke calmly, respectfully. "You're in line for the gondolas, which can take you all around the city. Apparently, anyway. This is my first ride as well."
Oh... Was that what she had signed up for? There were worse things to get wrapped up in. "That sounds lovely. Would you like to be my partner? I don't know anyone here." She looked around. More than ever, she just felt lost, even if she was on a journey. And what a journey it had been. She had yet to run into anyone she knew but at least she knew that she wasn't dead.
While she was at it, it didn't hurt to ask another questions. "By the way... Do you know how I can get to Alexandria? I doubt it but there's no harm in asking, right?"Her eyes looked hopeful, like she might have been counting on it the way a child prays for a miracle. She might be dressed like the people in the town but she most definitely wasn't one of them. "I've been lost for some time. And I don't think there will be a way to get home." Worst case scenario, she could start a new life here. But she had no skills aside from running a country, reading, writing, and her past in combat, though she didn't count on that to get her far.
It was with a fondness that she looked back on the days. It was her friends that she drew strength from, those experiences that she had grown from, and because of them, she was a worthy and capable queen. Now it seemed like it was all for nothing. Garnet turned out to look at the beautiful waters, a smile on her face that was genuine for the first time since she woke up in this strange land. She didn't understand the politics. And it seemed like people traveled from all over, though most had seemed kind. Still, she had to be safe if she was going to start a new life here. Well, she needed a home first. There were so many questions that had yet to be answered. "Not to be nosey, but do you like it here? Provo, you said? I'd like to settle down somewhere if I can't find where home is."
The woman seemed completely clueless as to where she was even going, citing that she didn't know what she had signed up for. Caius blinked a few times, as if struggling for a moment to register what he was hearing - but he eventually accepted that he had heard stranger things. The woman asked if he could be her partner, and he looked to the gondolas for a moment. "I don't see why not" he responded. They could certainly continue their conversation there when they got there.
As they drew near to the end of the line, she asked if he knew here Alexandria was. He blinked a few times again, but this time he knew a bit better what was going on. Meeting off-worlders who asked about their kingdom of origin was nothing new at this point. And he doubted she was sent here from anywhere but another world. It was always these kingdoms were somewhere uncharted, but... He doubted they'd be sent here by magic if those places were of this world. He cleared his throat as he prepared for the next big explanation, but then he was shoved a bit. He had been distracted, and hadn't realized he was at the front of the line.
"Apologies" he spoke to the one who bumped him, as he would reach over and gently take Garnet by the wrist to pull her with him gracefully, getting her past the people directly behind him as he stepped onto the gondola. He kept his hand out, moving his fingers to hers to loosely keep a form of support to aid her way onto the gondola. Once she was aboard, he let go as he sat down.
"So, where do I begin... I'll try and make this short and sweet. You're in Serentestra, a world that is essentially a melting pot between worlds. You're one of many who have been sent here from your own, most likely. And if this sounds crazy, and you want to hop off and get away from this crazy blonde man, you're free to it" he spoke casually. "I'm used to it by now. But I've been here a few years, so I know by personal experience that this isn't so crazy."
He thought on her second question. "I suppose I like Provo well enough. Nice enough place" he remarked with a shrug. He'd like it better if it wasn't a plague town.
Garnet assured herself she would feel better once she figured out something. Anything. The world was still strange to her, and she yet to know where she was even heading, or if she would even see Alexandria again... How did she even know if she was alive or not? The last thing she remembered from her world was the group in her throne room that had scheduled an audience with her, only to make an attempt on her life. How could she not think she was in heaven? Except heaven wasn't an ideal place. This new world was full of uncertainties, of strange new people and strange new things, though there was still beauty to behold as there was with every world.
The got closer to the gondulas and the blonde guided her to the boat. It brought her back to reality and away from the thoughts that harbored her mind, keeping her in a storm of doubt and anxiety. "Thank you." Garnet took his hand without hesitation, carefully stepping onto the boat with a grace that kept her balance in the water. Once they were seated, the raven haired queen looked over the edge of her railing and got a close up glimpse of the water, sparkling beneath the shining sun.
When he started to explain, Garnet focused her attention back to him, rather than linger her eyes on the waters. Her hands rested on her lap as he claimed to want to compact his explanation. "Wait... So I'm not crazy?" She wasn't dead either... That was something to be glad for. The queen flashed the brightest smile before she threw herself at him for a warm embrace. "Oh thank you! Thank you! This is wonderful news!" She exclaimed before righting herself and holding her hands up. "Apologies for that. I just... I'm so happy to learn I'm not dead!" What came next had her attention as well. There was a journey ahead, a long one with foes anew and obstacles all over. "You've been trying to get home for years?" Well what if he never got home? And if he never got home, she probably wouldn't either... It made her thankful for the water head of them. Such a tranquil scene helped her process this news better. Otherwise, Garnet could have launched herself into a panic.
In that case, perhaps it was time to consider where she would want to settle into and make a home from. But what was she going to do? How was she going to make a living? And how was she supposed to pay her body guard? She promised him reward and now it looked like she either couldn't pay him at all or wait years until she could afford it... Perhaps the best thing to do was to dismiss him and let him have whatever he wanted. She could allow him to live in her home if he needed shelter. If she could, she would take care of him when he needed.
Caius felt guilty that he had to tell this woman that. It was never easy finding out that you were stuck in a world not your own, likely never to return. His thoughts drifted back to his conversation with Cecil, who while he did his best to keep his composure, Caius saw his eyes and knew. His next words after that showed it too. Denial, refusal to accept that this was how things were and how they were always going to be. And there was nothing he could do about it. Caius had done all he could to help the man, but only he would be able to assuage his grief.
Once they were in the gondola, he was able to see her reaction for himself. He was... A bit surprised, honestly. She seemed to be taking this better than he had been expecting. First stating she had thought herself crazy, but he had confirmed otherwise. And then the bright smile, the hug (Caius had never really had one as an adult before so this made him blink a few times) and the statement that she was happy. Why? Because she wasn't dead.
Well, he supposed that wasn't too surprising. He'd thought he was dead at first too, when he came here. But that was years ago, and this was far from heaven. It wasn't the hole that Lucis was, but it had its problems. It was no perfect utopia, to say the least. She then asked him about his claim he'd tried to get home for years. "Tried is the word. I belong here now, and I accept that. After long enough I realized I wasn't going back, and before long, I found I had a purpose here. One I serve best I can."
He watched her eyes, then. He knew he shouldn't he knew he should look away and spare himself from seeing the pain. But it was like watching a wreck. She seemed... Inquisitive. But nowhere near as heartbroken about losing her home as he'd thought. She was a strange one, wasn't she?
