Caius was quite polite and professional. Angeal was immediately impressed by the man’s demeanor. It was exactly the type of person he would have believed made a great Soldier. Though the word mercenary had, at first, left a sour taste in Angeal’s mouth, he considered that, perhaps, such a job out here was similar to what he once did back home. Taking on whatever jobs needed to be done in order to enrich the lives of others. From their interactions so far, Caius seemed to be a good man himself. Honest and fair.
Later, maybe, the Soldier would ask him about his work as a mercenary.
For now, they had nothing but the elements to battle. Away from the protections the town offered, the heat from the sun came down with a familiar, unrelenting fury. The sand beneath their feet took in the warmth and radiated it tenfold, pushing a punishing heat from the ground upwards. Angeal knew well there was no escaping the life-sucking energy of the desert as he swiped an annoying trail of sweat away from his hairline with the back of his hand before it could sting his eyes. If he stood still for too long, the hot sand would start to practically cook through his boots.
The silence in the desert was different than anywhere else. In the woods or the city, the sounds of life kept one’s mind entertained. Birds chirping, machines moving. But, amongst the sand, silence was very real. The wind stirred up occasional noise over the sounds of their boots once in a while, but other than that it was nothing. Nothing aside from the sounds of breathing and shoes shuffling.
The blonde broke the silence, asking what had brought Angeal out to the desert.
Right. It wasn’t exactly the most ideal location. The Soldier adjusted his hood as they tromped along, “I’ve been searching for my friends for a while. I was traveling south from Sonora and I was planning on heading straight to Torensten, but …”.
He recalled arriving in the town a week ago, exhausted and dehydrated from his journey. The people there immediately tended to him, treating him like a friend they’d never met before. They were just thankful he’d made it there, instead of perishing in the sands.
Angeal smiled, “Everyone here was very kind to me. I didn’t want to take advantage of their kindness and leave before I could pay them back in some way. So, I’ve stuck around to help however I can.”
It was bittersweet, though. He enjoyed helping others, brightening their days, making their lives easier and less dangerous. However, there was a shame in staying still. The nightmares creeped along the edges of his consciousness; a steady reminder, a constant nudge to leave.
“I shouldn’t stay much longer, though. I need to keep looking for anyone I know.”
How long can you swallow the pain? Before it comes round again, And a shadow in the valley will lead you to them, So don't follow.

The blasted heat. He didn't know if he could stand it. He figured that by now, he would be used to it. Didn't he live in Torensten? The place was scorching hot 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week. But this? This was something else. This wasn't Caius' first foray into the desert, but he never felt like he could get used to it. The sooner he was back under proper shade, the better. He'd always heard that the climate of a desert was ridiculously dangerous. But this, no pun intended, was far more ridiculous than he could have possibly imagined. Every moment felt like he was being cooked alive.
He more or less was. The sun was an unforgiving mistress.
And the silence was something else too. Between the heat and the cold, dead silence, with little life in sight, it almost felt like purgatory. The only sounds besides the occasional gust of blazing wind, was Angeal's reply. It was a pretty common story he heard. Someone who was clearly from another world searching for people they knew. He could respect Angeal staying to help repay his debts though, despite how intolerable the desert was. He didn't know if he could stay out here longer than he had to. But he knew he'd try. He was stubborn like that. And so it seemed, as was Angeal.
"Offworlder, then" he responded with a nod of his head once he had finished. "I hear this kind of story often. If you find people you know, consider yourself lucky, trust me" he brought up, frowning at the thought. "With all the people I've met, I've found that certain worlds and timelines churn out more people, some... Some only get one. In my case, well... This isn't the easiest thing to explain, but it appears that this world has chosen my world as one of its hosts to grab people... But a different time period than mine entirely. Even people I know don't know me. My own King, who I served for years, thought I must have served under his father. A father who has been dead for almost 15 years now. Unless I enlisted when I was a bleeding toddler, I don't think that's very likely."
He shrugged his shoulders. "I'm the lucky duck, the one person from my timeline that was pulled here. I don't have any friends to search for."
Not the funnest thing in the world to think about.
"But I do hope you find yours. I consider myself lucky that I've fallen in with the Dragonblades since. This world's easier to get by when you're not alone anymore."
Caius seemed to immediately understand Angeal’s situation. It made him wonder, momentarily, just how common it was to run into other people like him. Offworlders. But, as the blonde spoke, he realized he should consider himself lucky. Despite the fact that he hadn’t found any of his close friends yet, he had run into someone he knew. Someone from the same world, who once looked at the same stars and knew the same names, who spoke in familiarity with him. Though they hadn’t really spoken much about their lonely place in a new world, Angeal had found a creature comfort in Cissnei’s presence.
He shuffled his boots along in the hot sand, lost in thought as he absorbed Caius’s situation. The oppressive heat of the sun and the dry wind was hardly a concern to him these days as it bore its weight down on the pair, and the silent Soldier had no problems focusing on anything and everything else other than the environment.
The blonde mercenary claimed to be lucky that he didn’t have anyone to search for, but Angeal couldn’t help thinking Caius was likely lying -- at least, a bit. Friends and family left behind. Memories that he couldn’t share with anyone else. Loneliness was already a hard thing to endure, and he’d known that pain well as a child. In a way, it reminded him of Sephiroth. Even the world’s greatest Soldier, who definitely lacked most human contact his entire life, couldn’t hide from loneliness.
“Sounds like you’ve got a tight group with the Dragonblades,” Angeal commented with a smile, hidden underneath the shadow of his hood, “If I can’t find my friends, maybe I’ll have to drop by and see if you all have room for one more mercenary.”
The rest of the conversation would have to wait, however, as the shrill call of a monster came suddenly from overhead. The Soldier turned to look, shielding his eyes from the sun as he caught sight of the figure flying nearby. A griffon, it’s mighty wings stirring the sand beneath it, was darting behind the sand dune directly ahead of them. As it disappeared from sight and into the sands, the cries of its fellows bellowed loudly, welcoming back their brother.
“Looks like we found our nest,” Angeal muttered, flexing his gloved hand as he continued to trod forward through the sand toward the nearby dune, “It likely didn’t consider us much of a threat, since the whole roost is here.”

It was a sore spot for Caius. His own King didn't recognize him. A King he had served for several years, at that. None of his comrades had been brought here with him. He was alone, for one reason or another the sole Kingsglaive from his timeline taken. Noctis and his retinue... Taken from somewhere else entirely. Caius had truly been forced to start over here in every single way, and unlike Angeal, had no chance of meeting anyone he truly knew. He tried not to think about it, but... He had met so many people, served as a guide for so many. Many who asked "Where are my friends" and Caius had promised to help them all in some way if he could. Many had even reunited with their friends and shared happy moments... Happy moments that Caius knew he would never get to have. Happy feelings he would never get to feel. Those feelings of nostalgia, of warmth, of comfort... They were not for him. And they never would be.
He had the Dragonblades, at least. It... Helped. But nothing would end the homesickness he felt sometimes. He knew that he had no choice but to completely start over here, with no links to the past to guide him or help him forward. And he had accepted it and done his best to move forward. But it wasn't always the easiest thing in the world to deal with.
In a way, he was still alone. And always would be.
"I do" he spoke softly. Indeed, he did. And he was grateful for them. He smiled gently as Angeal mentioned that he might drop by and potentially look to join up. "I think you'd do great" he brought up. As a man, yes. As a warrior? That was to be seen. The call of a monster told that they would be able to find out soon enough. An entire nest of these large winged creatures... Great. This job was clearly far more dangerous than what he was being paid for. There would be words.
"Any suggestions for how to approach?" Caius inquired towards his companion. "I can hit the entire nest from here with magic, but if you don't like the idea of them all coming at us at once, I'm open to ideas."
From behind the dune, they were safe to observe the nest and converse about their next move. Angeal considered what he knew about griffons from his own experiences with the beasts outside of Midgar. They tended to be stronger enemies that fought hard with sharp beaks and even sharper claws. With access to a bit of magic and attacks with their wings, they were hardly a foe to be underestimated. The Soldier scratched his chin as he considered their options.
“I don’t think a full-frontal attack is wise,” the Soldier uttered, the battle strategy forming in his mind as the information pieced itself together. Having another warrior by his side felt more natural -- like he was commanding a fellow on the battleground, “Griffons are naturally smart and very aggressive. The ones back on my world are also capable of barrier magic, if they have the time to activate it.”
It would make an already difficult fight even harder. They needed to ambush the creatures, preferably from more than one side. Caius did have magic of his own, though, and they could easily use that to their advantage.
“I’ll flank around the back,” Angeal nodded, motioning his path with one gloved hand, “Give me about sixty seconds. Use whatever magic you have to hit the nest, and I’ll take the back half in the chaos. The others will be startled, but they’ll still come seek you out. Move in when you can, and we’ll stick together.”
He was really counting on Caius’s brute strength. There were between 10 to 15 Griffons in the roost; too many for one man, and hopefully not too many for two. Whatever power Caius had, Angeal would simply have to believe in him.
Surely the blonde wasn’t suicidal.
With their plan formed, Angeal moved quickly along the dune, heading toward the back to flank the beasts. He knew, once he heard the bird’s startled cries, it would be time to strike.

It seemed that Angeal had some experience with these types of monsters. Caius meanwhile, had next to no experience with them, but he did have experience with larger, winged monsters. So at the least, he could provide that sort of thing. Angeal though, might very well be the key to pulling this off. Caius listened closely to his battle plan, noting how quickly he had been able to form it. He was very clearly former military, much like Caius was. Clearly put into a great many situations where thinking on the fly was absolutely necessary, not just for victory, but perhaps even for their very survival.
"Griffons are naturally smart and very aggressive. The ones back on my world are also capable of barrier magic, if they have the time to activate it" stood out in particular, as Caius kept tabs on their potential capabilities. That meant that his attacks may very well be useless if he couldn't stop them from using their barriers. Caius was a weapon specialist, and wasn't the best with actual magic spells. That had always been something Celes was better at. He missed her a little, thinking about that. They always offset one another's weaknesses. Now he didn't have Celes to offset his. He would have to plan accordingly.
Luckily Angeal's plan fit perfectly with the one Caius had. He had every intention of hitting them with his best magic right out of the gate in order to get the advantage going in. Especially if his melee wasn't going to be the best if they got barriers up. Which was likely, considering numbers... Hopefully with a flank attack, they could finish this off quickly.
Angeal left. Caius counted down. Towards the end of his countdown, he started to charge up a spell... He hadn't used it in combat before. This would be a first. He knew he had gained it, for he felt it... But he had never truly unleashed that power. It was just another thing he typically trusted Celes to use more safely. Now, he needed to figure this out for himself... And hope for the best.
"FIRAGA!"
The scream was followed by his launching the spell with both hands, the cry getting the attention of the monsters just as the massive fireball hit the nest, exploding into a massive pillar of flames in turn. Caius fell to a knee, gasping for breath. He would need a minute to get his bearings back, but he'd be back in it soon. Hopefully it was enough for Angeal to get in there and hold them off until he could complete the flank... At least for now, they were all focused on him. Angeal could get them from behind for the time being.
Angeal’s boots struggled through the sands in his quick pursuit of the back flank, but not near enough to slow him down. He rounded the edge of the dune, taking a quick peek at the nest just on the other side. By his inner clock, Caius would be using his magic in the next ten seconds or so. The Soldier took the very short breath of opportunity to count their numbers, to try and identify how many may get struck down by magic alone.
In the next few moments, a scream came over the otherwise still air of the desert. All the creatures looked up for a moment before breaking out into angry cries. The brief appearance of light was all Angeal needed to know to duck back behind the dune. He took cover for a moment as the roar of intense fire spread throughout the griffon’s nest. Underneath the sound of the powerful magic was the pained cries of the monsters, struggling to recover from the sudden attack.
The moment the intense light began to fade, the griffons began to beat their singed and scorched wings. The ones that could still fly lifted themselves from the ground while the others scrambled toward the source of the magic, their beaks snapping angrily at the air. A couple didn’t move -- either dead from taking the blast of magic head on, or temporarily stunned. Either way, with all of their backs turned, it was the perfect time to strike.
Though the angry, lingering heat from Caius's attack nipped at his skin, Angeal leapt over the side of the dune into the nest. Moving quickly despite his size, he swiftly pulled the Buster Sword from his back. There were no mighty roars of combat from him, simply the grunt of effort from his first strike, cleaving into a weakened griffon’s back with his heavy blade. The bird shrieked, and it’s fellows turned to observe the problem. The Soldier moved to his next target, removing his blade from the beast with a sickening squelch. He could take another two, maybe, before they all turned their sharp claws to him. He could handle a few like that, until the others that were further ahead turned back to help. Hopefully, that would be enough time for Caius to get in and help him.
Otherwise, this had turned into a very bad idea.
The griffons that had been able to fly circled around, switching targets to the more immediate threat. Angeal felled another weakened beast with a chop to the back of its neck. They were beginning to turn now, and the Soldier turned defensive, blocking a swipe of claws behind his massive blade. He ground his teeth in a growl, twisting to the side to dodge another swipe from a different griffon. Now things would be a little more difficult, until the flank was completed.

Caius needed just enough downtime to restore his magic. There was no use trying to get in there as he was, considering how many of them there were. He would need to use his Warp, and the Warp required Magic, which he did not currently have much of. Luckily he could recover his magic through a bit of rest, but this left him open. Which led him to where Angeal came in with all of this. If Angeal could flank behind them while their attention was on Caius, then he could attack from behind and get the advantage. And once he took it, they would focus on him, at least for the most part, and that would give Caius ample time to recover enough of his magic to continue fighting. Unfortunately, the desert drained his strength a lot faster than anywhere else, and Caius had not been prepared for that. The heat had been intensified even more by his magic, at that. Which he had expected, but he still wasn't used to fighting in a desert to begin with. Unfortunately, by the time that some of them fell on him, he wasn't able to recover his full strength. But it was enough to fight with.
Taking a deep breath, Caius jumped back when one of the singed griffons snapped at him. Could he buy time? He heard Angeal falling upon the others, which reduced the amount coming for him. Caius took another breath as he jumped back from the raging beaks once more, summoning his sword as he pointed, the barrel already loaded...
He fired, taking the griffons by surprise as the shot pierced through their beak and took them down in one shot. The shot caused the others to hesitate in surprise, giving Caius just a bit more time. By the time they charged again, he had... Well, not full strength, but it was acceptable. They fell upon him, and he met them head on. Slashing at the side of one, he warped backwards and into the air in order to catch another by surprise, a quick slash at the neck trying to end this one early. He would have liked if he could have just warded them away, but... He knew that this wasn't happening. It never was with these monsters.
In the middle of the fray, Angeal detected the sounds of weaponry and the near-distant screeches of the griffons that hadn’t yet circled back toward him. Caius was up and about it seemed, at least managing against the monsters that had flown to take him on for his burst of earlier magic. It didn’t seem too terribly many of them had flown ahead to Caius’s location, but enough to certainly be a bother. And many of those had experienced the lesser effects of his fire magic.
Meanwhile, Angeal was trapped within his own circle of razor sharp claws and pointed beaks. He rolled to dodge another swipe, heaving the Buster Sword to slash at the flank of a bird that had come too close. Griffons were very intelligent, and they slowed their attacks, watching him carefully through terrifying, slit pupils.
Angeal kept his guard up all the same, making sure to time all of his strikes and movements in the direction of where Caius was still fighting. Closing the distance between them gave the two swordsmen the best chance of taking all the beasts down. A griffon launched forward and Angeal stepped back, allowing it to push him further back to Caius’s location. They were intelligent, but not capable of understanding that it was dangerous to let the two men become closer in proximity.
For the monsters, it seemed like putting the two troublesome prey in the same circle was a good idea.
The heat from Caius’s earlier attack faded as Angeal stepped further away from where it had happened, but as the griffon’s launched into their next flurry of calculated strikes, the Soldier was stopped in his progress. He huffed in effort as the Buster Sword flew to cleave another neck from a set of shoulders, another twist and roll to dodge the next attack coming at him from the left. A clang of metal rang out as claws scraped against the mighty blade, and Angeal hissed as one set of talons slipped through to gouge against his bicep. It stung, but it wasn’t deep enough to cause him much concern.
Hopefully, Caius had the same plan, and had moved in closer. Together, they could finish off what remained of the flock.

The Dragonglaive
Angeal moved to close the distance between them, allowing the swordsmen to work together also bringing the entire clutch upon them all at once. Caius kept to the air, forcing the griffons to take more drastic movements to get to him, opening them up for attacks from Angeal nearby. While he couldn't Warp forever, especially as he had expended a great deal of magic on the Firaga earlier, he made up for it by hopping onto the heads and backs of the griffons. Using them as platforms, Caius was able to flip through the air and open fire using his gunblade, getting them from a distance before warping forwards to close the gap and dealing a decisive blow. Caius had begun going for precision, aiming for vitals to end this quickly. The quicker they could fell the griffons en masse, the better. One at a time, they fell.
Eventually, the remainder took the hint and began to fly away. Caius landed next to Angeal and held out an arm to signal not to attack. As the griffons disappeared from sight, Caius fell onto his back, sucking wind.
"Gods, fighting in the desert is exhausting" he admitted between haggard breaths. "It sucks the energy out of you very quickly. Every movement strains you faster than it would otherwise. I don't know how you've managed to fight out here this long" he admitted. Angeal had certainly shown his worth. Caius wouldn't forget that. But at the very least for now, the griffons had left the area and hopefully wouldn't come back. It was a shame it had come to this, but Caius and Angeal had done what they needed to do in order to protect the safety of those in Aljana. It was as it was. Necessary.
