Caius was still wondering how in the world he had managed to get himself involved in this.
The blighter who he had been chasing from the bar had gotten away into the crowds, so this place didn't hold the best memories for him. But he knew there was nothing that he could do. The guy had hired goons who had stopped him in the street, forcing Caius to defend himself while the slave owner got away. Well, at the least Caius now knew that most likely his intuition about the man had been right. And even with his cloak, Caius had some idea of his appearance if he encountered him again.
But that would have to be handled another time. For to get his recruit to focus on the mission, he had signed up for... This thing. And the day had come to pay the piper.
Once the mission was over, despite their failure for the time being, the recruit had gotten started on instructing Caius in... In...
To be honest he'd forgotten most of it already.
Moving on to what was important, Caius had arrived a little early so as to ensure he wasn't late and to ensure they had a booth. This wasn't really so much "Date etiquette" so much as it was just Caius doing what he'd normally do if meeting another mercenary for a job. To his surprise, they'd already prepared booths based off the numbers they'd matched everyone with.
So, there's the backstory. Caius had found himself sitting in the booth wearing a casual black dress shirt. The recruit suggested a suit, but... Caius didn't own one. Because of course he didn't. If it didn't have practical value as armor, he probably didn't own it. Sure he wore undershirts but only ones that were meant to be lightweight and could be put on easily.
But he did go out and buy this shirt. Even if this thing was a buttoned nightmare, it was the least he could do if wearing at least semi-formal was apparently proper polite courtesy on this date thing. Caius had forgotten to put on the top button though.
He wasn't gonna lie, he missed his armored jacket. He felt exposed. Like someone could stab him in the ribs at any moment and he'd probably die type exposed.
So there he sat. In this "exposing" dress shirt, in the booth, waiting for this blind date of his. With absolutely no idea what he was supposed to do now that he'd gotten this far. The rest of the recruit's advice had all blended together and almost none of it had been retained. So this was probably going to go horribly.
He was intrigued by the information on the card he'd been given though, with information written down on this blind date of his. This Freyra seemed to enjoy a "challenging fight".
That seemed pretty good to him.
While waiting for this date of his, Caius had leaned back on the cushioned seat in the booth and taken to sketching into a book. One could call it his "Fight Book". In it were sketches and information on any monsters he had fought, and what he knew about them. The one he was sketching at that moment? The Lich. The skeletal monster still had a pretty prominent place in his memories, and Caius was attempting to capture that on paper. The sketch would take forever and he probably wouldn't finish it today, but time spent doing nothing but idling is wasted time, and this seemed as good a time as any.
Freyra would arrive fashionably late, having briefly forgotten that this was going to be a thing despite somewhat looking forward to it. Like Caius, she couldn't be bothered to dress up for the occasion, so she was wearing a suit that he would likely find to be all too familiar, based on some of his previous encounters with others from her world. Not that Freyra would have any way of knowing this would be the case, of course, but hey; small world and all that. All the same, she'd look to Caius and blink, double checking to make sure this was the correct table and sitting down across from him upon doing so. After that, she'd take a moment to look him over.
He wasn't bad looking, though she personally felt like the "long blonde hair" look just didn't work on guys. Admittedly, she may or may not be a bit biased because Emma (whom she may or may not have a subtle crush on) has been totally rocking the look, but that's somewhat beside the point. Still, he didn't look bad enough that she felt like she was going to regret coming here. With a smirk, she sits down "Not bad...at least you're handsome enough that don't feel like this'll be a waste of my afternoon. The last guy I went out with was so forgettable that I legit forgot what he looked like after getting up to go to the bathroom."
She paused for a moment, and it was then that she realized something about him was vaguely familiar, though she couldn't quite place what it was. It took a moment, but it finally registered after a moment of her wracking her brain a bit. She'd still never seen or met the guy before; that much was unchanged. But she did recall hearing about him, and when she looked back at his name, this seemingly confirmed it. "Come to think of it...aren't you the owner of some monster-slaying guild? Dragon something-or-another?" She had recalled hearing something like that one time while she passed through Tornesten. And he did seem to match what little description she'd heard of the leader.

Time passed like nothing at all to Caius, who hadn't bothered to order until the person arrived, and he was so engrossed in the sketchbook that time became a non-factor. But he would gingerly place the sketchbook down when someone would sit across from him. Their expression indicated to him that they were perhaps expecting something a bit more. He was no mind-reader though, so the exact reason escaped him.
Though he would return the blank expression and repeated, blunt series of blinks when the woman opened the conversation by commenting on his looks, tearing down the looks of someone else she had claimed to go on one of these dates with in order to do so. Was that normal to do that? Was that standard culture for these dates, ridiculing someone that wasn't there in some half-measured attempt at a compliment toward the other party? It didn't feel like a compliment either, if it was "just enough to not be a waste". But Caius shrugged it off. At least she was honest, he supposed.
Caius himself had no real comments to make on Freyra when it came to her appearance. She was visually appealing, though he didn't have a set of words to describe this in the same way she had seemingly attempted. According to the recruit, what one thought, their interpretation of one's physical appearance, or how "beautiful" they were, as how one would rate the beauty of a flower or a skyline, was meant to be important in this whole "partner finding" process they kept blathering on about. He supposed he saw some practical merit in the analogy, at least. It would be discomforting to spend the rest of your life waking up next to a presence that repulsed you. Still not a reason to hold things against someone as this one seemed to have though.
The woman brought about a more interesting question though, as she seemed to recognize his face and asked about the Dragonblades. He smiled softly as he scratched his head. "Ah, I was hoping not to throw that around during a personal engagement. Didn't seem polite" He admitted with a small chuckle. "Aye. Celes and I lead the Dragonblades mercenary guild. We fight monsters a lot though, yeah" He added to answer her question.
Something that had been on his mind though, as he studied her, came to the front. Her attire. Though he wasn't sure how to bring it up after the whole thing with Umbrella. This time, he decided to try something a bit more subtle.
"Last time I went to a restaurant, my company was quite fond of turk-ish delight. I don't come here often, so I wouldn't know. Would you happen to know if it's as good as it sounded? I might look into ordering it should we get to the desserts" He inquired curiously. It was worded innocently enough, but with just enough emphasis on that particular word to get the point across to someone who the word would mean anything to. If it didn't, well, it was easy enough to spin it. Caius was a storyteller, after all.
He did have an actual question, a curious one. But he'd let that wait until he could confirm his suspicions.
Freyra couldn't help but be a little amused by how obviously perplexed Caius was, which was fair. Even she was aware of how odd her comments probably sounded now that she'd though about what she said; she just didn't really have any sort of filter, nor what she really the type for formalities, even when on a "date" like this one. Still, he seemed nice enough, and he certainly seemed like quite the interesting individual, even if he wasn't particularly her type. His confirmation that he was indeed the co-leader of the guild she had heard about added to it. While it didn't seem like its main focus, she could respect anyone who made a living in part by hunting down monsters, having grown up doing very much the same thing.
"I see, I see. Sorry if that put you on the spot; was just curious, is all. I grew up as a hunter in my original world, so I'd by lying if I said my interest wasn't piqued when I first heard about your group. Though, ultimately, I ended up going along with some other plans. Still...sounds nice. There's a special kind of thrill in fighting wild beasts and monsters that you just can't quite get anywhere else...sadly, even in this world, the work I do means I don't get to do that as much as I'd like to." She let out a sigh, then smiled as she realized she was starting to ramble a bit "Or, at least, that's how I've always felt. Either way, sorry again. Admittedly, subtlety has never been one of my strong suits." Understatement of the decade.
Then she heard it. That glorious, groan inducing pun. She didn't even catch it at first, but then she randomly noticed how much emphasis he placed on the first half of the word "turkish". It seemed out-of-nowhere, but then it dawned on her, and the implications finally hit her. It seemed this man had met one of her allies before, and thanks to that, her suit was a dead giveaway. Either way, she couldn't help but burst into a fit of laughter when she finally processed everything, speaking once she finally calmed down. "Okay, I like you. I'm gonna have to steal that one for later...so, lemme guess. You've run into Cissnei or Emma? Or maybe that slightly unhinged cutie with the umbrella."

"I can agree with that" He stated when she would cite that there was a thrill in fighting beasts and monsters. One that couldn't be beat. While Caius did his fighting for more... Virtuous reasons, he knew deep down that in a way, there was an addiction there too. He enjoyed the thrill of battle. He enjoyed the wind blowing back his hair as he sailed through the air. The swing of a sword, the clunk and slish as blade met scales or other material. The tension that hung in the air as the battle between life and death raged with only one able to come out on top. He enjoyed fighting, and while he had written down his entry on the form with haste and with whatever first came to mind, the fact it was one of the first things to come to mind kind of said it.
He recalled what he'd read from the form about her he'd been handed when this whole thing started. Then he smiled. "Perhaps I can invite you along sometime, if you find time" He offered softly. He didn't know much about the work that Cissnei and Umbrella did, but it sounded like a lot of busy work. If this Freyra would see going out fighting monsters as her idea of a break, he'd happily take the help, especially if she enjoyed it. And if she was anything like Cissnei... She would more than do her part.
Subtlety wasn't a strong suit? Well, there was a shock. "I don't think it's one of mine either" He admitted with a small laugh.
But the subject grew ever more interesting when she picked up on his hint. It hadn't exactly been a well-veiled one, so it would probably still have been awkward if she hadn't. So it was.. Probably good she did. She gave a few names, and he nodded his head with a small smile.
"One and three" He answered. "Cissnei's a gem. One of the most capable people I've ever met. Her ability to plan on the fly and negotiate paved the way to a far greater and more peaceful conclusion to our work than I could have imagined" He remarked, with a small grin, his eyes lighting up a bit at the mention of the redhead. He clearly thought highly of her and her capabilities.
"I'm also glad to hear that Umbrella was telling the truth. I may or may not have given her a bit of a hard time while guiding her to Sonora. Her wording on her origins gave me the impression she might have been one of the ones Cissnei mentioned had been after her in her old world" He admitted, scratching his head a bit as he mulled it over. He was very quickly struck with guilt over being rather cold with the girl. He had been protecting Cissnei, but... Well, it still didn't make it right. "I'll have to apologize next time I'm in town. Maybe with an apology gift... Food, perhaps."
He duly noted there was a forth to their number. He would have to look out for this Emma.
