Graceful was not a word Caius would use for their dance. Neither of them had any sense of grace here, nor the knowledge of how to make that happen. Caius noticed the looks they were given, but to be honest? He found himself not caring anymore. Celes was laughing and smiling and... Well, that was all that mattered to him in these moments. People could give looks and say what they liked. Sure, they probably looked ridiculous, but he didn't mind anymore. By the time he had made his little joke about her background, he had almost completely relaxed and his shoulders had loosened quite a bit compared to when they had started. He had gone from being tightly wound, his breath heavy, his shoulders upright and military strict, to just... Being. He had spent so much time stressing over making this just right for her, but the moment it was clear she was enjoying herself anyway... All of that stress just washed away.
He laughed when she let out her "Oh please", amusement caking his response as he did his best to keep up with her when she turned. He had the steps down a little better now, and had stopped looking down at his feet the whole time. One, two, three... He was adapting quickly, though he still had the grace of a bull in a china shop. At least now though, he could look her in the eyes when he spoke. "I think you could have pulled it off if you'd wanted to" He teased with a small smile, but got a little more serious after that. "Honestly I don't blame you for not doing it when you'd just taken on the role of singing though... That sounds terrifying on its own, singing in front of people. No way in hell could I do dancing too, in your position."
Caius didn't see them nearly hit a couple since Celes had been facing their way while he had been facing the opposite, but he did adjust a bit to help her when she stumbled. As they got moving again, he chuckled lightly when he called the whole thing at the opera wasted time. "Sometimes what seems like wasted time can be useful. Even if you don't realize it right away. Doesn't stop me from getting agitated when I feel like I'm wasting time though, so don't take my word for it" He remarked, a bit of laughter flowing from the last bit of that remark.
Reading someone, thinking ahead... He nodded his head a bit at that, and re-adjusted himself a little more as he listened to her, trying to act on that idea. He could do that, right? He knew she was spitballing in a sense, but he trusted her judgement.
He met her eyes when she would speak up next. While he didn't notice the glow of her cheeks, he smiled warmly when she brought up that it was ridiculous. He spoke softly in turn. "You're happy. That's all I care about."
And he meant it.

Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
"Sometimes what seems like wasted time can be useful. Even if you don't realize it right away.”
Celes hummed unhappily. ”I guess.” There had never been anything like that that she could think of. She’d learned her skills in fighting, in strategy, and in magic and that’s all she’d ever needed. Fighting for the empire. Fighting against it. And then protecting herself when the end had come. She’d never needed anything else, and yet…
Well, she was dancing now, wasn’t she? Such a funny world to live in. A world where she could dance.
Caius laughed. They turned. They weren’t getting better, but they were getting faster. Humiliating themselves faster, that was. They were like two children barely in control of their own balance.
Caius met her eyes. She blinked in surprise. He smiled in a way she’d never seen from him before. A strange smile.
”You’re happy,” he said. ”That’s all I care about.”
”Oh.” She felt heat rise to her cheeks. ”Th-that’s...Um…”Why was he still looking at her? She became suddenly aware of the way they were touching -- her hand on his waist, his own her shoulder, the others clasped. Why was he looking at her like that? Why was he smiling?
It was almost like…
”Oh!” Her foot slipped and then she felt a crushing pain on top of it. She cried out, stumbling back as her toes pounded and she cursed loudly. They were completely exposed in their sparkling silver and thin heels. She felt her back hit something solid, and a hand caught her from behind. A man in a suit. He looked at her disapprovingly and she froze, staring.
Everyone was staring.
”I think we should go.” Her voice squeaked. Why was it so high? ”Let’s go. Now.” Then she was running out as fast as her heels would take her. What had happened between them? Was there any other way to read it? She didn’t think so, but she must have been wrong. It was Caius, after all. He was the most blunt, oblivious, simple man she’d ever met.
Could he really have feelings for-?
She burst out into the gardens and kept walking, arms wrapped tightly around herself. She felt cold and hot and breathless all at once. Her head spun. Again and again, the question reflected in on itself. What was that?
Between the staring and the dresses and the heat in her cheeks, she felt as though something might burst.

”I guess.”
Caius casually bopped his shoulders upwards a bit in a shrug. "Just something someone told me. I hadn't really put much stock into it until recently" He remarked offhandedly. He was still unsure about it himself, but it had been a theory that was steadily beginning to prove it had merit since he had been here. Here, away from Lucis, away from... That life. Everything had changed since, and sometimes he just... Didn't know if he would ever understand everything about these changes. Old habits still died hard sometimes.
But suddenly, within moments of what he said next, everything changed. Her expression flashed, then she cried out. That expression of hers caught him off guard, and his mind immediately went to the possibility he had done something wrong. He'd stopped looking to his feet, he realized, had he screwed it up so abysmally without realizing that he had irreparably destroyed any effort he'd made to cheer her up? He had no stock in his ability to dance after all, even if he had, possibly mistakenly, begun to think he had at least gotten to a point where they were somewhat... Stable. Somewhat. Or had he said something, done something, without realizing it? But he didn't have much time in that moment to think about it as the next cry followed her slipping. This one was of pain. His eyes widened as he completely broke dancing posture, reaching out to try and steady her not as a dancing partner, but more like two allied combatants in the heat of battle. What he was used to. Old habits really did die hard.
Everyone was staring now.
He didn't realize it at first, but Celes' expression tipped him off as his eyes darted about a moment before returning to her. Between what he perceived to be some fault of his, and her expression showing that the happy moments had ended, and the attention all on them... It only took a few seconds between the realization and the change that followed. He no longer felt secure, or relaxed, or like he didn't care about all that was going on around them. His shoulders shot straight up, his expression turned stone. His breathing changed as well. Within mere seconds the metamorphosis back into guarded military man had begun and ended. Just like that.
”I think we should go.”
"Agreed."
She would hear no argument from him. It hit him hard and fast just how much he had just a few minutes ago wanted to get out of here before Celes had taken priority. She broke their grip and started out of the hall, and he wasn't far behind. While he kept tabs on her vaguely though, his gaze was on the ground and his hands were in his pockets as he found himself stuck in his thoughts again. Blaming himself over and over again. He had to have done something, hadn't he? It was always him doing something. It was always him flubbing something or saying something the wrong way that led to things going wrong. Most likely he had screwed up and caused her to get hurt. The only reason he hadn't brought that up yet was because if she was hurt enough, she was more than capable of taking care of it, far more than he was. But it was still gnawing at him. He didn't know how long they had been walking, until he slowed his walk and spoke gently.
"I'm sorry" He spoke up. "I don't know if I said or did something out of turn, or if I screwed up and caused you to fall like that, but..." He trailed off. "I'm sorry I couldn't make everything..." Words, what were words? "Turn out well."
That sounded like the right way to word it, didn't it?
Either way, he had subtly hoped that once they were out of that infernal place, he would begin to settle down. But with his guilt in knowing he was probably to blame for all of this in a scenario where he only wanted to make her feel better, he didn't feel anymore settled than when they had started.
Where even were they? It occurred to him that he had no clue how far they had walked, he had been completely on autopilot until now.

Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
Caius followed. She knew he would, but she’d hoped he wouldn’t.
She needed silence. She needed space. She wouldn’t have run otherwise, and even now she kept at a brisk pace, eyes ahead. She wanted to be home. She hoped Relm wouldn’t ask questions.
”You didn’t do anything.” It was true in its own sense. This was on her. This was her fault and she was almost certainly imagining things. Still, between the ball and the men and Caius, she couldn’t think straight. She needed to scream.
”I want to get out of this dress.” She slowed to a stop. ”I want to let my hair down, and I want-” She let out a frustrated noise and ripped off her mask so hard the cord snapped. Beneath it was her makeup, carefully applied. Black mascara. Smoky eyeliner. Blushed cheeks and red lips. She wanted to run it down her sleeve -- if she had one. This wasn’t her. It wasn’t-
”I’m going home,” she said. ”I can walk myself. I’ll see you in the morning.” She pushed her hair behind her ear and started walking. Was it fair to Caius? No. None of this was. Her feelings were her own responsibility and no one else’s. Still…
What had he been thinking? Saying something like that? ’You’re happy. That’s all I care about.’ It wasn’t inherently wrong, but the way he said it...
He knew how she felt, didn’t he? He knew how she was. He should have known better. Or should he have? She’d been vulnerable already. Uncomfortable. Nervous. What had she seen, really? Nothing. She’d seen nothing. She was acting unfairly to him. She was hurting him, wasn’t she? So why was she still walking? Why didn’t she want to apologize?
She needed space. Even if it meant hurting him for now, she needed it or she’d hurt him all the more. She’d take her space until she could get her thoughts straight, and then maybe she’d take it a little longer. If he stayed near her, she’d likely cry. She’d yell at him and blame him, and oh she hated the thought! She needed space. Just space, and then…

Celes Chere Word Count: OOC: Fin. Dialogue Color: 196fd1
He frowned. He didn't understand what was going on. She insisted that he hadn't done anything wrong, but... He didn't know what to think. Something was off, but he didn't know what, he didn't know what to say or do. If she felt he had screwed up, she would tell him... Right? She had made it very clear what he had done last time. Or well, somewhat anyway. Enough for him to figure out what he had done wrong, get his thoughts together and apologize.
But this was different. She said he hadn't done anything, but he still couldn't stop the sense that he had and she was upset at him. Her statement that she would walk herself home only brought credence to that theory. He gently pulled off his mask - happy to be able to go without the accursed thing -- and pulled off the string holding up his braid as his hair fell down to his shoulders. Exposing a face that had been unable to hold a stony exterior any longer. He felt confused and hurt and shut out. He didn't understand any of this. He had tried to be plain and simple on what he thought he had done wrong, but she insisted he hadn't done anything yet what came next said otherwise. He wanted to be optimistic. They had hated this place, hated the crowds and the masks and the pomp and circumstance. They had hated being out of their element, and Celes had been upset with what happened with that masked man. But... It had been fine, for a bit, during the dance, hadn't it? She was happy, that's what it seemed to be anyway. The anxieties seemed to be gone, but all of a sudden everything had changed. And even if she said otherwise, he still couldn't shake the feeling he had done something or said something.
But he couldn't piece it together. He was hurt that he felt as though there was something she wasn't telling him and there was the chance he had wronged her somehow with no chance to make it right, but he was also just concerned about, well, her. She was upset, that was clear as day, but there was nothing he could do. Not this time. There was no apology, or hairbrained ridiculous idea, that could help. He was completely in the dark, left with only a vague idea of what was going on at best.
He didn't say anything. He didn't know what to say. He let her leave on her own before he bothered to step further, not wanting her to think he was disregarding her wishes. Once she was gone, he made his way out of the city to return to his own homestead. There was nothing he could do, he kept telling himself, even if it frustrated him sorely that was the case. This was something Celes was going to have to sort out on her own. It sucked that she was unhappy and he could do nothing. But Celes could handle herself too. He could only hope that if it was something he had done, or even just something he could help with, she would be upfront with him about it eventually.
