A cloak flapped in the wind as a shrouded figure made it's way to the half broken city of Torensten. Azure eyes, gazing ahead, locked on his destination. It had been a long and difficult trek, thus far, in spite of their victories, and the lone figure had nothing to do but think. To plan. To consider.
To worry.
Everything leading up to this moment had either been a fight, or a wait. He, himself, hasn't witnessed the 'splendor' of the Gods that apparently organized this bloodstained tryst between two sides of the same coin. He gripped his cloak over his face as he stepped through one of the numerous archways into the City itself, the gates opening as the guard posted waved in recognition. The man gave a nod in return, trudging through as the road changed from raw dirt to cobblestone and brick.
The cobblestone gave way to flat pavement as the newer (more like newly repaired) portion of the City had surrounded him. As the bustle had grown into a large crowd, expecting to make their daily grocery purchases, the man pulled the tattered cloak off and tossed it into a nearby garbage bin, revealing longer hair, a face covered with a month's beard, and war torn clothes.
His steps lightened as he moved through the crowd, the True King emerging on the other side as he made his way to one of the first places he had visited after his Arrival.
The hotel and pub that housed outworlders on the regular.
After his campaign to bring Lightning back to the light, he had worked in the shadows to not only find the others (he had lost track of Lunafreya, as well as Aranea), but also to assemble with the otherworld heroes and warriors to find a way to stamp out the Scourge being spread by Ardyn. Warriors native to this world had fallen in droves, and Noctis knew that there was little hope of him being able to stand against his corrupted Ancestor with only the Ring and part of the Royal Arms having been restored to him.
He sighed quietly as he reached the pub, the "Hub of Heroes," as it had been renamed. A small grimace crossed his face, a visible cringe to how tacky the name sounded, then he resumed the resting expression that had become the norm for him. Stonefaced. Focused.
Determined.
He pushed on the door, opening it to a new adventure, and new potential.

One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
The wine was getting more and more tempting the more time he spent in Torensten. This place was completely and utterly mad, he was realizing. So, ever since coming here, Alex had come to learn a few things about this world. The first being that Torensten sucked. Everything exploded here on what seemed to be a regular basis. There was always some sort of fighting going on. As embarrassing as a name like Hub of Heroes must have been, there seemed to be a villainous counterpart around here! Last time for him it was a bunch of tornado like attacks going on while things just kept getting worse and worse! Needless to say, that bottle of wine was just getting far more tantalizing as the days went by. Zephon... well there wasn't really a place like it.
He wondered if there would be anything eventful today? Perhaps today he'd be allowed a little piece and quiet. He'd gotten enough money to buy some new clothes, amass a wardrobe of outfits different from that white shirt and black pants he usually liked to wear. He thought dark blues looked good on him, to be honest! He wasn't exactly the fashion genius Tataru was, but well, he could work something out if he had to. Maybe work a few more jobs, get the money from that... ah, he may not have been Tataru's equal, but, well, he shuddered to think of how stuffed full to the brim his glamour dresser was. At least he remembered what he kept on there so he could go get those clothes again. Shame that it hadn't all come with him to Zephon though.
As for a quiet day, well? Noct Today! Ohoho. You may laugh, for I am the pinnacle of genius. But really, Alex blinked a few times as the door pushed open and he saw a familiar face. He raised his hand, waving at the young prince (or was it king, now?) "Oi, Noct, over here!" To be honest, he didn't expect the guy to recognize him, this place did something to peoples' memories, he had learned. Why he'd been spared, well that was beyond him. But part of him was thankful for it, as even if there was plenty of bad, there was plenty of good that he wished to cherish.

With as much that has happened in the past month, Noctis wasn't sure how he could even quantify the impact that living in this world had on him. It wasn't the same sky. He didn't recognize the stars. It was like having the feeling of missing a step walking down some stairs, but all the time. The plunge of unexpected dread as your foot hits the next step down, constantly hanging over his head, was almost maddening. But, he stayed strong. This wasn't Eos, for sure, but he still had his power, his determination.
And out there, somewhere, was Luna. His breath caught in his throat for a moment as he thought of her, knowing that she was indeed safe, but still out there, in the middle of this. He wondered if she remembered him, if she remembered everything from beginning to end. The feeling that caught in his throat sank, and sank, until it rest in the pit of his stomach, deadening to a weightless void of uncertainty.
In the distance, he heard a voice.
Hey, Noct! Wake up, man! Prompto?
Snapping out of his trance as he looked around the bar and saw an unfamiliar blonde man calling to him, hand raised. Confused, Noctis made his way over, greeting in return with a wave of his own, before sitting down across from the blonde, pausing, and finally speaking.
"Forgive me, and you may hear this a lot around here, but… where do I know you from?" he said, surprised at how dry his voice sounded, having not spoken too much in the past couple of weeks. He continued after another breath. "I know that I've met people from other worlds before I came here, I just can't remember exactly what happened. If you could refresh my memory, I'd be more than happy to confirm it."
What tipped him off to the guy actually knowing him was the use of his nickname, Noct. Granted, Ardyn has used it once or twice tauntingly, but… Noctis would give this one the benefit of the doubt.

One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
Yeah, it was definitely Noctis. This would be great, it'd be fun to catch up with him! How long had it been? Hm, by Alex's guess, he'd last seen the guy shortly after Gaius bit the dust. Alas, what little hope he may have allowed himself was quickly crushed when the prince sat down... and told him point blank that he didn't remember anything. Alex sighed. "More than once." Really he should be expecting it at this point. Whatever Zephon did to people, it royally screwed them up. How he'd managed to escape it was beyond him, but it really made it painful when he encountered people he knew, and they didn't remember him.
Of course, he was used to that. Even back home, he was used to the comings and goings of others. He was used to everyone he knew and loved eventually dying or vanishing or even just forgetting him. There were times where Myste had a point, as loathe as he was to admit it. But, he would just do what he always did, and he put on a smile. "Certainly." Best to start from square one, catch him up. After all, the man had asked for it, had he not? "It all began when you crashed into my world. Possibly literally. You had this thing called a "car" that broke down." In Thanalan, in a desert. "I'll never forget how you had me push it by myself for several miles in the middle of a sandstorm. Good times." He smiles as he reaches for the wine. It's a sweet, friendly smile. He's in no way salty about that, no sir, not at all. Nope. No bitterness there.
He pops the cork, pouring himself a small cup; it has a nice, sweet aroma to it, he realizes, before he hands Noctis the bottle. Uh... now that he thought about it, this was a small guy, was he even old enough to drink? "That was where you met a man known as Cid, who offered to repair your car, this "Regalia." He did. He also reverse engineered it." That part may or may not have been left in for some strange, unrelated reason, surely. "From there, we began to look for a way to get you home, because you really wanted to get back to your fiancée." A single sip. Then another.
"We took out a bunch of guys that followed you here to kill you, and camped for the night. The next day, you insisted on fishing, so we did." Once again, no hint of bitterness there whatsoever. Though, if he was being honest, he actually did enjoy the fishing, that genuinely was great. In truth, he actually had a really good time with Noctis, he was just ribbing the guy. Mostly. Granted, he meant no genuine malice. "Finally, after your Garuda showed up and "tested" us, you were allowed to go home, telling me you'd be back to pick me up so I could meet the rest of your friends." Once again, no salt. No, he was totally okay with being left behind and left to go on many, many, many more adventures.
Without even so much as a letter.
He nods, taking another drink as he leans back. "Before you left, I actually got to see your fiancée for the briefest of moments. You're quite lucky." He gave Noctis a thumbs up. He had to give him credit where it was due, that girl he'd manage to hook up with was really someone that could make the room spin just by walking in. "How's she doing, by the way?" He asked an innocent question.
He might not have even noticed the presence of His Majesty if he hadn't been presently speaking. Heck, if anyone else had been speaking in the middle of a busy establishment, he probably wouldn't have recognized the voice. But that was a voice forever ingrained in his head for one reason.
"Brothers and sisters, brave warriors of Lucis... You've done well these ten years. And I thank you. You've done so much, all for my sake. Even as the darkness overcame our world, we kept the Light alive in our hearts. We've all lost friends and loved ones along the way, but the one thing we never lost was hope. Brothers and sisters, I ask you to stand by me and fight at my side -- for the Light, and for the future of our world!"
The words that had brought him to where he was. The words that had made him desire to join the Kingsglaive. He was anointed that day, with the other Glaives having vouched for him after the work he'd done in Insomnia to help out prior. He had given his life to this cause after those words, and the voice behind it was one he would never forget.
Caius had been just here for a drink before returning to headquarters in what he knew would be another fruitless attempt to ask Celes to take a break and rest, before he had heard it. His attention had turned to it, but he realized quickly that the man who he immediately recognized to be his Royal Highness, was presently already engaged. He listened though, waiting for an opportunity to pop in and say hello, perhaps update His Highness on going ons. He hadn't had much chance to talk to him when they had met. Too much business at hand, at the time. No more than a few words had been exchanged, introductory at best. Perhaps now he could have a chance to talk to him. But he wouldn't interrupt his conversation.
The last question asked by the stranger though, made Caius stand up. While he was only small when the Oracle was killed, he knew from television broadcasts that the Oracle who had died was the betrothed of the at-the-time Prince Noctis. Sensing an uncomfortable disaster waiting to happen, Caius' old instincts kicked in and he gingerly walked over, acting as though he'd only just noticed Noctis was there. He didn't give any time for Noctis to answer unless he truly wished to discuss the subject. Caius had given him an out if he wanted it though.
"Your Highness, I hadn't realized you were here" He spoke curtly to the Chosen King, bowing respectfully. "Do you mind if I have a seat?"
He looked to the stranger then, and nodded his head in quiet greeting.
When the night has come And the land is dark And the moon is the only light we'll see No, I won't be afraid Oh, I won't be afraid Just as long as you stand, stand by me
❞
The blonde had described the time Noctis had spent in his world, going over several stories of their adventures together, nodding pensievely at each point, even grinning a couple of times at the parts that really sounded like him. He heard mention of his fiancee, and his smile faded ever so slightly. When asked about her welfare, he was about to actually say Oh, she's actually in Zephon as well, but he didn't get a chance as a familiar voice rang out from behind him. He looked up at the man, instantly recognizing him, and standing with a smile.
"Caius! I'm glad to see you're well." he said, clapping a hand on the Glaive's shoulder before motioning for him to take a seat. Taking his seat back, he took the bottle that was offered and poured himself a glass, looking at the liquid before looking over to Alexander.
"Luna and I… well, we were both dead before we showed up, here. I assume that's… probably why I never came back to get you. Things got really complicated and, well… it killed us." he sighed slightly and took a long drink of the wine. Bitter, fruity. He didn't much like the taste of alcohol, and rarely even indulged in the Lucian wine that was brought home by Ignis for his cooking. He took another slow drink before setting the glass down, crossing his arms. "Alexander, this is Caius. My father- well, the Lucian King can share his power with who he chooses, those of which becoming the Kingsglaives. Caius here is one of, from what I've heard, a couple that has shown up to Zephon." the introduction was brief, the explanation probably not clear enough for Alexander to readily understand, but, a friend was a friend, and they both were as such.
He took another deep breath and spoke. "As much as I wish I could keep the tidings well, it seems like things are getting worse in this world. After helping an old friend out, I set out on my own for a month to get a lay of the land, and find out how far Ardyn's Scourge is spreading." he looked at Caius. "It's everywhere."
He looked to Alexander. "I'm sure, as time passes, any time I spent outside of my realm will slowly come back to me. I hope to remember our adventures, but, until then, I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask for your help." he leaned back in his chair, allowing his words to settle before he would speak again.
When Caius appeared, Alex couldn't help but deadpan a little. Why is almost everyone in this world taller than me? Asked the six-foot man to himself? Granted, he wasn't exactly short, but there were so many people here who had an inch or two over him, it wasn't fair! But, Noctis's story hit Alex pretty close to home. Right, he could understand that, having experienced something like it--well, not him exactly, but still. It also presented the issue in that he really had no idea what to possibly say to something like that, as he'd never had anyone else encounter it specifically, so, he paused for a moment, and came up with the best response he could possibly muster. "That's rough, buddy." Really, what the hell did you say to something like 'oh I died but then I came back so it's all good now'? There was just no real winning move in a situation like that!
Then he got a crash course on the powers of the king, and suddenly things started to come back to him. "Wait, you told me once about sharing power or something." He remarked, and yeah, was that the... "Is that the zoomy-sword-stab thing you use to blink around? That was really fun to use." Well, okay, he didn't remember the term Warp Strike, but he'd gotten to use it when they were dealing with Garuda; kept him from literally dying part way into the fight. But... huh, he looked at Noctis. "So does that make me a member of this... Kingsglaive, was it?" If anyone who used the zoomy-sword-stab thing was a member of the Kingsglaive, then technically that made him one? Maybe? He'd have to look into it later, he figured.
And then the two, this Caius, which Alexander took a moment to wave to with a quick hello. Really, he was just an adventurer here so it's not like he actually warranted a full introduction. But a plague by an Ardyn. "Sounds like you're rather Ardyn-t about stopping this guy." And he laughed at his own joke like an ass. Oh, jeez, right. Maybe there were some things that Noctis was probably better off not remembering to begin with. "That being said, who's Ardyn? Anyway, count me in." Because in all seriousness, if there was some asshole being a world ending threat, then that needed to be taken care of, like pronto. Or perhaps Prompto. Oh man, he was just killing it today.
Caius had not known His Majesty very well in the old world, so Noctis greeting him warmly with a clap on the back was unexpected, and nearly caused him to topple forward before he caught himself. "I'm glad to see you are well, Your Majesty" Caius responded as he obliged his request and took a seat. Caius was suddenly a little self conscious when he realized that it might be awkward with his current attire. He didn't wear the signature garb of the Kingsglaive any longer, instead wearing a similar but still very much different jacket and uniform with armored pieces on the shoulders, elbows and knees. Emblazoned on the back of the jacket was the insignia of the Dragonblades mercenary guild.
Caius listened silently as Noctis would choose to oblige the man after all. It was his choice, he supposed. Caius had done what he could, but in the end, it was His Majesty's decision and no one else's.The least Caius was able to do was give him the ability to choose. But then Noctis said that he and the Oracle had died. And then were sent here. It took a few seconds for that to sink in. "What..." He whispered, slowly turning to stare at Noctis long and hard. Well, he didn't look very dead. But he wasn't the first "dead" Lucian to be here now. He would have to ask about that later, he supposed.
Noctis then introduced him to the new guy, before moving onto the topic of where he had been in the last while since Caius had seen him last. It seemed that Noctis had been trying to find out how far the Starscourge had spread, and Caius let out a sigh in turn. "It hasn't spread to Sonora, by the looks of it. I haven't seen it in Torensten either, but Torensten's a big place" Caius would add to the observations. "Provo... Oof" He trailed off, shaking his head. "Provo... I've never seen anything like it. I've never actually seen someone be afflicted with it until recently, but I knew it when I saw it. It was a gut feeling, I suppose. Fight enough daemons and you just know, I guess. But... It's horrible."
The new guy indicated that Noctis had shared the Power of Kings with him, and Caius blinked a few times in turn as he looked him over. He hadn't ever heard of a non-Kingsglaive being given that sort of power. Just who was this guy?
"We could use all the help we can get when it comes to Ardyn" Caius pointed out toward the new guy. "Don't have any Kingsglaive jackets though, you're probably out of luck there. I'd let you borrow mine, but... I don't think it'd fit. Suppose a tailor can always make you one based off it though. Y'know, something more your size" He joked lightly with a small smile. It was his way of playfully jabbing at him for the Ardyn-t pun... Which he wasn't dignifying with a direct answer.
"Speaking of Ardyn... So I don't know how to cordially bring this up" Caius then remarked as he looked to Noctis. "But on my travels, I've met two Lucians who claim to be from the era of the Founder King. One of which claims to be the original Oracle..."
When the night has come And the land is dark And the moon is the only light we'll see No, I won't be afraid Oh, I won't be afraid Just as long as you stand, stand by me
❞
Noctis listened pensievely, taking in each word and regarding them carefully. Reading between the lines of Alexander's snark wasn't difficult (Alexander more spoke his language than most others, in this world). Noctis crossed his arms and stroked the stubble on his chin with his index finger as Caius started. The blonde had a more detailed (and understanding, considering the mutual origins) account of what had transpired. He didn't look up until there was a mention of the first Oracle. Ardyn's Fiance. His eyes darted up from his thousand yard stare and seemed to pierce Caius for a moment, considering the words for a moment before speaking.
"That would make sense. Lunafreya, myself, other warriors saying they remembered dying in their own worlds… Makes me wonder…"Does this mean anyone can come back? he finished his thought mentally, filing the possibility away for another time. Right now, if Caius was accurate, the first Oracle was in the world, and he was unsure of what this meant for Ardyn. The only other thing he could think of beyond that was… what if…
"We need to keep our eyes open. If the first Oracle can return from the dead, as with anyone else… that means old enemies of Lucis could surface here. The Emperor, any of his Generals, even Glauca. With as many allies that we already have, it would be safe to assume that we would have just as many foes among us." he looked at his hand, a crystalline shimmer circling his fingers for a moment.
"Unfortunately," he said with a frown "I'm unsure if I can pass my power onto anyone else. It'll be something to explore, but, right now, I have to find out just what Ardyn is doing." he closed his hand into a loose fist, and the shimmer subsided as he looked up at the two. "This world is already unstable, with the Dragons and the stronger beasts showing up. The last thing I need is for Ardyn to make them stronger with the Scourge."
He crossed his arms, letting out a slight sigh. "The only thing I can think of right now is to continue reconnaissance wherever you go. New developments, potential allies, anything you can find that can help us. I'm sure Ardyn didn't have the drawback of showing up here without most of his power, so I've still got to recover my full power before I have a chance to seal him… or…" he trailed off before letting his arms drop. "Caius is right. We need all hands on deck, for this one."

One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
The mention of demons was curious, voidsent, then? But he waited for both Caius and Noctis to finish saying their part. It seemed that there was at least some sort of common ground between the two that Alex didn't have. The whole "being from the same world" thing tended to help with that. So he just poured himself another glass and began to quietly drink it. If nothing else, getting sauced wouldn't be the worst thing ever. There were so many ways to approach this, but how? Caius had brought up a really good idea. Alex wondered if the two would go for it, or if it would even work if they did, but, well, apparently they were dealing with a very powerful foe that likely hadn't been stripped of any of his formidable abilities.
Noctis's confession was surprising, though. He couldn't pass on that power? That was a peculiar thing to know. Then again, it might be memory related thing, might not know how to. Although, it sounded like he still could, just not with him, which in that case... "You were able to grant it to me in my world, but my world was soaked in aether, or magical energy, take your pick. Either way you may as well have been drowning in it." His world had so much aether that a group of shadow people from the days of yore would regularly use it to unleash different armaggeddons throughout the ages. Really, the part that a lot of people tended to forget was that the moon crashing towards the earth only to turn into an angry dragon god and burn the planet was only the most recent iteration of the apocalypse for them. Currently, Hydaelyn was on their seventh game of Civilization and in one instance, had to start its eighth.
So, taking another drink, Alex finally started speaking again. "So, who, exactly, is Ardyn? Spare no detail. Exactly what he looks like, exactly what his powers are, exactly what he can do, exactly his motives. Everything. Tell me everything." Namely, if this guy was a major threat to this star like they were saying, then he had to be dealt with. "It also may not hurt to track down his fiancé and see if he won't help against Ardyn." Well uh, Caius's wording may not have helped there.
