The gods have spoken and I am king
Somnus had a feeling that Caius seemed like the type of person who wanted to get the last word. Maybe that was one of the few things that they had in common outside of their magic. So Somnus wasn’t surprised when he laid his hand on the doorknob and the kingsglaive started a sarcastic line about how he was sorry to see him go. Rolling his eyes, the king was prepared to ignore him until the implication that followed made him stop in his tracks.
“...Ardyn is here?” There was a high probability that the soldier was just trying to get another rise out of him, but the way that he referred to his brother as a daemon was correct at least. His information was good, even if his words weren’t. Still, Somnus had to raise an eyebrow at Caius’ claim that he was spreading the starscourge around this world too now. Had Ardyn’s darkness finally consumed him? If Caius was to be believed, then it sounded that way.
“Of course I care,” he scoffed. “I was the first to see him for what he was, after all.” He still didn’t know whether or not he trusted Caius’ claim when the man so obviously disliked him, but the thought was still...troubling. His brother’s powers had been nothing to scoff at even before he had taken in the scourge. If they were to run across each other now, when Somnus didn’t even have Gilgamesh at his side…
Well. He hardly wanted to consider the possibility.
Caius finished up by saying that his mercenary guild would always be there to deal with people like Ardyn, and Somnus’ lips thinned at the implication that kings weren’t needed anymore. Was he really naive enough to believe that they could handle his daemon of a brother? Let alone the starscourge?
“By all means, try. But you don’t strike me as the type to do whatever’s necessary to contain the scourge.” Somnus turned his back again with a dismissive wave of his hand. “So enjoy the time you have left. When you inevitably contract the disease, then I for one will enjoy watching you burn.”
Twisting the doorknob, Somnus left the ramshackle little base, running a slow hand through his hair as soon as he was alone outdoors. Everything that Caius had said was impossible...but the very concept still made Somnus pull his robes a little tighter around himself before he marched on.
