Declan was rather surprised that he did not know where the healer he mentioned was. Then again, Caius was only the boss; not their babysitter so it did make sense. When Caius began to mention his errand and it needing done, Declan nodded, and had got a little excited when Caius offered him to help. With a smirk, Declan said, "Yeah! Of course I wouldn't minding helping you out." The young Al Bhed had said. After all, he finished his hunt and had already collected his reward. Declan proceeded to follow Caius and the dragon to a rather fancy looking estate. Caius had ordered Vordun to head to the back, and the dragon obeyed. It was then Caius gave Declan his instructions which were to nab the person who would be running out the back door. Declan grinned and said, "On it!" Declan quickly made his way to the back of the estate where the dragon was waiting.
A few moments later, Declan heard a scream, followed by a well-dressed man rushing out the door, however he did not get very far. In fact, as soon as he was out the door, Declan took his right leg which was closest to the man, kicking his feet from underneath him, making him fall to the ground. Declan then quickly proceeded to pin the guy down by holding him with both his hands, holding the mans arms behind his back with his face and stomach facing the ground. Declan stayed quiet as the guy yelled, "Get off of me! Get off!" He tried to struggle but with Declan have a firm hold on him as well as on top of him, preventing him from going anywhere, The young Al Bhed spoke. "Now, Why would I do that when I know you'd just run away?" Declan had asked rhetorically. It was basically his way of saying, 'Nice try, but No.'
It was then that the man tried flailing, however that just made Declan annoyed. So, in order to get him to stop squirming, Declan took the guy's head and pressed it against the ground while placing the rest of his weight on the man in order to keep him pinned to the ground, waiting for Caius to back out. Well, this was fun, Declan admitted, kind of enjoying pinning the guy down to the ground. Declan had a feeling this guy was guilty for something, and Caius knew about it. Whatever the case, Declan had a pretty good feeling that he would learn about it sooner or later.
The command came calm, yet incredibly firm and blunt as Caius stepped out the backdoor of the house. His expression was of stone, yet his gaze was piercing. "You're enjoying this far too much. It's written all over your face. Ease up on him, only use as much force is as necessary" Caius advised as the larger man stepped forward and pulled the elderly gentleman upwards, quickly wrapping his arm around his shoulder when he started flailing and holding on tightly.
"Vordun" Caius commanded calmly toward the drake, who responded to the man's flailing with a loud roar that quickly stopped him in his tracks. The man slumped over, and his flailing ceased. "Better" Caius responded, before grabbing restraints from his pack using his free hand and ensuring that the gentleman was bound.
Before long, the woman from the door re-appeared, with soldiers. Caius strode forward and brought out the collar that had been on the woman's neck earlier, now damaged from what seemed to be the control area being crushed. "This collar was around her neck. He bought her as a slave from a bandit group called The Original Sin that kidnapped her from her home in Sonora. I know from firsthand experience that the collar restricts your abilities, though by her testimony, it sounds as though they have also upgraded it with magic to restrict movement as well, should the person exert too much as if to run. He's been working her ragged unpaid and against her will for some time now" He explained to law enforcement, who turned to the woman that then confirmed his story.
"I've managed to remove the collar first by destroying the control area which then unsnaps the restraint on it, before pulling off. He apparently told her that trying to remove it would kill her, so I took the precaution."
As law enforcement left with the nobleman and the "serving woman", Caius turned then to Declan.
"You did well, thank you for that. Even if you do need to be more careful with your methods" He pointed out. "Does my report to the soldiers suffice for explaining the situation, or did you have questions?"

Declan suddenly heard Caius' voice soon after pushing the guy's face into the dirt. Caius had told Declan to ease up. That was Declan had realized just how much restraint he was actually using. Oops, the young Al Bhed thought. It was then that Caius also had commanded his dragon to 'persuade' the guy Declan was restraining to stop flailing. It was also at that moment Declan had seen the woman standing next to Caius. She seemed to be frightened of the guy which Declan had a hold of. It was then Law enforcement had entered the fray. They quickly hand-cuffed the man with the help of Caius. At that point, Declan's job was finished.
Going back to the young Al Bhed's thoughts as whether this guys had done something wrong, were confirmed. The woman who stood next to Caius bought as a slave by the man. She was sold by a group of Bandits from Sonora known as 'The Original Sin." Declan had slightly cringed at the word 'Sin', thinking about the monster that wreaked havoc on Spira and killed over hundreds - possibly thousands and more of people. After all, it was said the creature had been at least a thousand years old. Declan quickly shook the thought away, as Caius had finished talking to the law enforcers. It was then that Caius had directed his attention back to Declan, thanking him.
"Not a problem, and yeah I guess I kinda went a little nuts their with restraining him." Declan said in admittance. When Caius Asked if he had questions about what he had heard, Declan did have questions about these Bandits known as 'The Original Sin. It made the Al Bhed wonder if these people had come from Spira, deciding to stir up trouble here, or if the name was just coincidental? Hopefully, it was. Declan didn't ask that though, due to him not be a member of the Dragonblades, not wanting to seem like he was prying into affairs that technically had nothing to do with right just yet. Instead, he simply asked, "So, if that collar the woman was wearing had magic imbued in it, then that means a mage is involved, right?" He asked. That could be the case, however it probably was too soon to tell just yet. Declan figured he'd ask anyways.
Caius nodded his head as he began to walk. Vordun followed alongside him and Caius motioned for Declan to come along.
"The Original Sin is a group of bandits that we have had problems with for some time" Caius explained quickly. "We've been disrupting their operations across the country and now they're coming for us. But we've been trying to hit them harder before they can. They are split into three lieutenants and a leader. It used to be four, but the forth, Darlene, was the head of their human trafficking operations. We took her out of the picture recently, and I was able to procure a list of their common buyers, as well as find out the names and operations of the other lieutenants. What I've been doing here is hunting down the names on the list, and shutting down the trading of human beings across Serentestra. That man was one of their buyers.
As for the collars... If I was to guess, the mage responsible for enough magic to imbue those collars, is their head of magical operations, Charon. Who's existence we found out about recently. He's been teaching many of their members magic... Which has been a problem for us. We still haven't been able to find him, but once we do... With Darlene and Charon out of the picture, their trading of slaves will likely grind to a halt."
Caius stopped in front of a tavern, before looking first to Vordun. "Hunt. I'll get you dessert" He told the dragon, who seemed to understand the command and took flight, flying out of the city and into the distance. It wasn't fair if Caius got to eat and Vordun didn't. But Vordun was too big for the taverns now. He then looked to Declan.
"I was planning to grab a bite. We can talk about your recruitment inside should you wish to join me. If you are still interested, that is."

Declan had listened to Caius' explanations about the group of Bandits. From the sound of it, the name was just possibly coincidental, given the fact that Declan had never heard of the name Charon before. "Seems like these people have been keeping you busy ... Not in a good way, of course." Declan added that last part quickly, not really knowing what else to say about it at this point. There was also something important that had crossed the young Al Bhed's mind as well. Caius said the Dragonblades have been dealing with The Original Sin for some time now. That meant that if Declan joined the Dragonblades, he would be involved. Despite learning this, it did not matter much to Declan. He would be actually more than willing to help the Dragonblades. Declan was a go-getter, so things like this never really phased him. He would just deal with it if he ever got involved in situations like this. That was just kind of person he was.
After having his dragon go hunt, Caius said to Declan that he could join him while he ate, so that they could discuss his recreuitment. Declan couldn't help but lightly grin. "I don't see any point in backing down now. So, yeah of course I'll join ya. Plus, getting a bite to eat doesn't sound bad either," Declan said, following Caius inside the tavern. Declan had no intention of backing down from joining the Guild anyways. If this got him a step closer to finding people from Spira, then there would be no room for concern for Declan. He was also curious as to what Caius would tell him in regards of the recruitment process. The young boy doubted that he'd simply become a member right on the spot, even though that would rather great. However, he wasn't going to get his hopes up from wishful thinking on this one.
Declan had spotted a seat over in the far corner and said, "We could sit over there if ya want," Gesturing towards the table in the corner. He figured since their discussion would be private in terms of the Guild, being away from ears would probably be more ideal then sitting next to people who would hear them. Then again, Declan wasn't sure if Caius classified their talk to be personal or not. Declan had also taken this time to turn off his Garment grid that was attached to his shirt so that it wouldn't activate while in the tavern. Despite it being a rather cool and advanced piece of machina, it sure was sensitive at times. Declan was kind of surprised he never had problems while fighting yet. It would annoy him greatly if he had kept randomly switching from dressphere to dressphere before even landing a blow on an enemy. At first, Declan had problems due to the frequency setting. He had adjusted it though, which helped, however Declan didn't like chancing it so whenever he entered a public building, he'd turn it off.
Once they were seated, Caius would order himself some food and drink, and give Declan time to do so himself before speaking up. While doing so, he studied his expressions, his reactions. Watching, waiting, testing. His expression was nonchalant and stern, as a more business-like demeanour took point.
"You're already aware of the risks that come with joining, obviously" He pointed out first up. "And what you would be getting yourself into just by being associated with us. Our activities have ruffled the feathers of a group of bandits. Badly. Just by doing what the Dragonblades do, taking jobs in dealing with bandit activity, monster slaying, criminal busting, helping people, all of that... We have stepped on the Original Sin's toes. And increasingly so, at that."
He let out a sigh. "I'll be honest with you because it wouldn't be fair to keep this from you, it's going to get worse."
His head lowered slightly as he closed his eyes. "I killed one of their leaders. She was responsible for their human trafficking operations, which was their most profitable venture. Without her, their resources have been crippled. While I wouldn't recommend killing other human beings in cold blood the way I did, as even I'm not sure if I did the right thing and I also understand we have a reputation to uphold, the fact is it's done. Since I did so, bounties have begun popping up for members of the Dragonblades. Expensive ones, too. It's very possible that with their resources, these bounties will extend to more members as this conflict goes on."
He tilted his head back up to look him in the eyes.
"I want you to understand that getting involved with us, while we seek to do the right thing... No good deed goes unpunished. And most importantly, that when you are one of us... Many times when you go out for a job, the type of work we typically take there may be lives in your hands. The pressure will be on to ensure those lives are safe. That is the most important part of our job.
Second most important is ensuring that we are able to keep doing this job. You represent us at all times. Everything you do, every job you take, will reflect back on us. The Dragonblades prohibit shady jobs of any kind. We are not thieves or assassins, we do not work with bandits, and I ask that you keep your methods as clean as possible". He furrowed his brow in turn. "None of the shit you pulled earlier."
Their food arrived before long.
"There is a practical reason for this, as I've mentioned. We want a clean and respectable reputation because, well, answer me this. Would you rather hire the reliable mercenaries who get the job done and do it honorably? Or the glorified paid brigands who might bungle it up because they can't resist being brutes, or who might lie that they did the job?
So my question is, before we proceed... Do you understand this? Are you capable of, and willing to, take on the pressures of this job? Are you willing to uphold our standards as one of us, so that we might be able to keep doing this job and helping more people? There is no shame in stating you are unable. Being a Dragonblade isn't easy... Especially now. But they're good people, who do good work. And you will find no shortage of things to do either. And it is a brotherhood as much as it is a working unit. You will find yourself with strong allies who all wish to do good as you claim to."
This type of situation was the most Caius ever spoke in one sitting. Business. The language that Caius knew and spoke well.
"As long as I benefit from the job, I don't care what it is."

Declan sat on the opposite side, facing Caius. The first thing the two had done was order their food and drinks, and then came what was Declan's interview as one would put it. Or at least, that's what Declan believed this was essentially. Declan had waited patiently for Caius to speak. It was definitely true that what Declan would be getting involved in would put his life at risk, with the bandits hunting down anyone associated with the Dragonblades. Declan had never asked why these bandits were fixated on hunting them down. That was when Caius had explained the reason why. It was because he had killed the person who was in charge of the human trafficking. "So, these Bandits known as the Original Sin are hunting down people who are members of the Dragonblades because of the that one person's death," Declan said, making sure only Caius could hear him. Even though Caius spoke to him freely about it did not give the young Al Bhed to speak loud enough for everyone else to hear too.
"I know that me joining the Dragonblades would put my life at risk, but it's actually something I'm used to. I would go around saving people from Fiends where I come from, so that's not a problem for me," Declan stated. Soon after that, Caius spoke about the second most important thing - appearance. Not in terms of physicality, but in terms of how someone represents themselves as a member of the Dragonblades. It somewhat reminded him of how Yevon ran, but at the same time, the Dragonblades were definitely not Yevon in regards of keeping appearances. Yevon was way more strict, and that led to a portion as to why the Al Bhed were discriminated. Declan knew immediately why Caius mentioned this. It was because of how he had handled the man that they were after earlier. Declan did admit that would have to be something he would need to work on, especially since he really did want to join the Dragonblades.
Declan had thought for a long moment, thinking of how he should say what he wanted to say. "Well, since you decided to be honest, it's my turn to return the favor. I should tell you though, telling you this is really hard for someone like me to say, but I'm willing to gibe it a try because I really do want to join your guild," Drclan said, pausing for a brief moment before continuing. "Ya see ... As you know, I come from place known as Spira. Right now, one could say it's very peaceful now due to the fact our new High Summoner had brought us what is called the Eternal Calm. However, before all that ..." Declan said with a pause, clenching his cup lightly, trying to force himself to relive the days Sin was still running amok throughout Spira.
"There was a very powerful Fiend known as Sin. Summoners would sacrifice themselves just so the rest of Spira would live in temporary peace. Why I say temporary, is because Sin would be reborn every ten years after it was defeated. This creature - Sin ... It attacked my home. Al Bhed like me were seperated, scattered throughout Spira because of that. At the time, ... I was just a kid. I had to raise myself." Declan said, biting my lips. "I had no one to guide me even though I was a kid because I was an Al Bhed. You see, the Al Bhed were highly discriminated against by Yevon because we would do anything to protect ourselves from Sin, even if that meant going against their teachings. We used Machina which was claimed to be Forbidden by Spira's form of government. I was just a child who knew nothing about that though. Yet, there were those who still saw me as this germ rather than a person because of my race." Declan paused once more.
"It became so hard to trust people, let alone ask for people's help. Then again, ... No one ever did. Raising me messed me up so bad that by the time I had rejoined with the surviving Al Bhed, it was even hard for me to trust those who were my own people. However, over time I began to trust people more once again all because of that old geezer, Cid," Declan said, staring off into space for a brief moment, thinking of how Cid helped Declan. Sure, it wasn't easy due to Declan being rambunctious and disobedient. However, time was all the boy needed to see that he did have people who cared about him.
"I wasn't telling you this because I wanted you to feel sorry for me, but to understand who I am. As you noticed, I can get a little carried away. I admit that. But that doesn't mean I'm a bad person. We all make mistakes, and I'm no exception to that. It might take some doing, but I'm willing to represent the Dragonblades as something good. I'm willing to give it a try," Declan said, finally finished with what he had wanted to say to Caius. Declan's eyes were looking back at Caius, filled with determination. When Declan had that look in his eyes, he was being serious. He rarely showed this side to those he knew, even himself. He never thought he would never be as open as he was to anyone, but at that moment, he had finally proved himself wrong.
"So, these Bandits known as the Original Sin are hunting down people who are members of the Dragonblades because of the that one person's death," Declan inquired first, and Caius nodded his head. "It's a bit more than that. We've been treading on their operations for some time, especially me. Initially, it was just me with the bounty, but as we started getting more involved as a whole... Either way, according to the files I found, that, again, was their biggest source of income. And Darlene, well... She was a special kind of cruel and sadistic. They needed someone like her to make so much gil from their ventures. She will be impossible to replace, and that venture is permanently crippled. Thus, so are their resources. My killing her, whether right or wrong... Has crippled their funding for the foreseeable future. So understandably, they're pissed" He explained quietly, not wanting to bring panic into the room. If this Declan was one of those bandits, well... What would it do? This wasn't information that the bandits didn't know themselves. So Caius had no problem with telling it to Declan.
He seemed sure of himself, that was for sure. Caius listened quietly, sneaking bites of his food while he listened. At the end of it, he nodded his head.
"I know" He spoke softly, referring to his talk of Sin. "I am aware of Sin. Yuna told me. My thoughts go out to you for what you've been through. I know from experience it's not an ideal way to live."
He played with his food a bit, deciding to give Declan a reason to understand just why he understood. "In my world, a curse called the Starscourge, went from a disease that turned people into daemons... Into something that plunged the world into eternal night. The sun never came up for ten years. It used to be that at night, the daemons came out, and you would need to retreat somewhere with light to escape and hope they left. With the endless night... The daemons never stopped, and only got more powerful with each passing night... Until they stopped being afraid of the light. It was a living hell. Every day we lived in fear that the daemons would siege what few strongholds were left and we would have nowhere left to run. I lived through this for half of my lifetime. I grew up in this. Trusting people was impossible. Resources were scarce, people turned to stealing and killing to hoard food and weapons. I lost everyone I cared about as a result, and grew up on my own with only a desire to survive driving me, from the age of 13..."
Caius shrugged his shoulders. "I think I was 13 anyway. When the sun doesn't come up, you lose track pretty fast. This was all because one person became a monster and spread the curse. It's monsters like him that the Dragonblades exist for. Someone has to fight it when things get dicey. The rest of our work makes sure there are people still alive to save."
He took a deep breath and then took a long swig of his drink. There seemed to be no deterring this kid. Caius knew by now he wasn't the best judge of character, but he wanted to believe this kid meant every word.
"I'll take you up on that. You'll accompany me the next time I'm on a job that I feel will hold acceptable conditions to test you with. That will serve as your field test. Is that acceptable?"
Before he answered though, there was one more thing.
"Before you answer... I want you to understand one last thing. I told you that those people's lives... Will be in our hands. And sometimes... We will fail. You will fail, and those people's deaths will be on your hand. You will most likely have been able to save them if you had been stronger, or if you had done something different. Sometimes no matter what you do, it will happen anyway. It will reflect bad on you... And on us. And there will be nothing you can do except get better. But there is a great deal of pressure that comes with this. Not everyone can handle it... And I won't blame you if you decide you can't. But I want you to consider that before you give me your answer.
This job... This responsibility... It's not easy. It will never be easy. But someone's gotta do it."
"As long as I benefit from the job, I don't care what it is."

Declan had listened to Caius explain more, talking about how it all started as a short summary of it. Declan could tell Caius didn't seem to enjoying killing others which of course is normal, but from how he described this Darlene person, it seemed that this person was not even close to be a good person. The young Al Bhed didn't condone killing other people, however, Declan had a feeling Caius had his reasons, whether or not it was right or wrong. Declan certainly knew better not to judge someone from what they have done in the past, especially if the person was somebody he had just recently met. Pointing a finger and judging someone wouldn't get anyone anywhere. He learned that from the fall of Yevon. "Well, That's what happens when you take away someone's main source of profit. However, human trafficking? That's inhumane. I could see why you put a stop to it, even though the final result wasn't exactly humane either, but the way I see it is, if you hadn't done what you did, this Darlene person would just go right back to work and continue selling people as if they were food." Declan finished taking a drink.
That was when Declan had a surprise. "I know. Yuna told me." He heard Caius say, which surprised the young Al Bhed boy so much some of his drink had ended up going down his wind pipe, making him spit out his drink. Did he just say who I think he said!? Could it be the High Summoner!? He had thought to himself. Of course it was. It had to have been the same Lady Yuna. "You know High Summoner Yuna!?" Declan finally said, taking a napkin and quickly wiping his face as well as the table from where his drink had spewed. Luckily, It had been projected towards the window, missing their food and Caius. Declan was just so shocked as soon as Caius said that. "So, let me get this straight to make sure I heard you right. You said you knew the High Summoner who had permanently gotten rid of Sin? The Lady Yuna?" Declan had asked. He just had to make sure just so he knew he wasn't going crazy and hearing things.
It was good to know that there was someone else here in Zephon from Spira, but Lady Yuna!? She was famous for defeating Sin, as well as revealing the truth about Yevon. In a way it was good but it was also somewhat bad. People had trusted the guidance of Yevon for years and when a good majority of Spira had learned about Yevon's false teachings, people began to despise it and turned their backs from the beliefs people once knew. Then, New Yevon was created and honestly no one hardly trusted them either because of them supposedly keeping secrets of Spira's past. That was when Declan had remembered something from earlier. "You also said you had member of your Guild who was from Spira that was a healer. You meant Yuna!?" Declan had asked. It was a little ridiculous how shocked he was from this through Caius' eyes, however he probably didn't know she was a celebrity where she had come from. Or maybe he did know? That was unclear to Declan.
Declan sat back in his seat, finally deciding to calm down a bit. He just couldn't help himself the moment he heard her name. He never thought that Caius had meant Lady Yuna. Wait ... If the High Summoner is here in Zephon, does that mean Rikku was here somewhere too? That question echoed in the boys mind. Suddenly, Declan was brought back to reality when he had heard Caius say he would be going on a mission with him whenever the opportunity had came. But before Declan could speak, Caius spoke again.
But someone's gotta do it." Declan bit his lip at hearing those words. Declan knew it was the truth, but with him being his own worst critique, if something like that were to happen, ... Declan probably wouldn't know how to cope. But, he had to overcome that, didn't he? Well, I guess you just have to make sure that never does happen then, huh? his own voice rang inside his head as if his subconscious itself was giving him the courage to go on with what he still wanted to do. " I understand completely. I know it will be hard and there might be days where I might wanna give up ... But, it is like you said - Somebody's gotta do it. If not us, then who?" Declan said with a grin, his determination coming back to life.
The kid was going to have to work on subtlety. The yelling, the spittake at the window. Caius quirked a brow in surprise and in mild irritation, and then shot him a look to indicate that he needed to keep it down considering they were in public. Caius could feel eyes on them. If any of the bandits were here, then Declan would become a target immediately considering they would now know he was with them. More importantly, if Yuna was of some sort of high position... He potentially had just made her a target as well.
When Declan began to question him, he shrugged his shoulders in turn. "I don't know about a "High Summoner" but yes. Our healer is named Yuna from Spira" He spoke quietly.
He squinted a moment. If this High Summoner and Yuna were the same, then she had a reason to keep her status as the High Summoner a secret. Perhaps from someone like this guy even, who seemed very interested in the High Summoner. Caius squinted a moment, looking him up and down. It was clear by his gaze that he was wary of the possibility that Declan could be a threat to Yuna. He was protective of the members of his guild, and any threats to them would be dealt with swiftly. Though considering what he'd seen so far, there was little reason for him to make a conclusion in that way yet, so he spoke nothing of it.
The topic turned to what Caius had said before about handling failure. Again, Declan seemed like a decent bloke, even if he had been a little suspicious. Caius wished he was a better judge of character after the last few incidents, but perhaps if this one did manage to go through the first job without an issue, then he could send him off to Celes for further review. She would be far more suitable in this case in telling. Or she would run him through drills and scare him off if his heart wasn't actually in it and this was a cover. That would work too. So he had no reason to doubt him for now.
"Indeed" He responded as he held out a hand then. "I'll alert you when I've found a job that fits the situation. For the time being... Welcome aboard."
