My life passes vainly by, as I watch the long rains fall.
Yuna was quite astute. Something in her face made Kana-Ei recognise that she could see the superficiality of his actions. What an interesting power play this would be. It still interested him that they somehow knew Cauis. Though by the sounds of it, his connection to the blond haired man was much more tentative.
"A group? Interesting..." He murmured, more to himself than the other women. What did this group do? Murder more defenceless people? Did that make Cauis something completely different to the stoic hero he appeared? Much like the diminutive brunette with the wavering voice hid something monstrous. How many vipers was he surrounded by?
Yuna mentioned her father being a summoner as well. She spoke of him in a way that indicated to Kana that he was no longer amongst the living. Though the significance of what she was saying had no meaning to him.
"I would be curious to hear about your father at some point. What was his name, Yuna?"
As he continued, Yuna managed to dig a knife deep into his heart. He could see the confusion on her face. 'Lost temples'. What did she mean by that?! Deep down, he knew exactly what she meant. In Spira, such words only had one connotation. When had it happened he wondered. Had it been quick? Was it because of his own failure to be the next saviour?
His emotions took hold of him - if only for a fraction of a moment. The composure that was so important to him gave way to the confusion and pain that bubbled away under the surface.
"What do you mean 'lost'?..." He hated how he sounded exactly like a lost child. Forcing himself to gain control over himself, he awaited the inevitable with as much composure as he could.
He let himself fade into the background of the conversation, licking his metaphoric wounds. Until Yuna faced him and asked if he had felt any reaction to the Fayth in this world. The pain as the twist of that knife was excruciating. At this point, Kana was very much convinced that Yuna was doing this on purpose out of some psychopathic glee for seeing others suffer. Rather than dignify it with a response, he smiled gently - lips very much pursed, wrinkling his eyes. He inclined his head slightly in a non-committal fashion. A familiar voice in the back of his head chided him for being so petulant. It was was most unbecoming. Especially for a summoner. You're not here to stop me, are you? Kana supposed it did not paint him in a favourable light and dropped this demeanour quite quickly. He didn't particularly want Aera to think poorly of him. He felt a connection to Aera. One that had he not known the truth of the other Summoner's morality, he would have been sure to have felt with her. That was not something he wanted to squander.
He listened on with some level of disinterest having assumed he would not find out anything of further use about Yuna or Shiva. After all, the conversation had progressed into an exchange between the two women. Until Ardyn came up in conversation. He sat a little taller and tried to scry what kind of thoughts Aera had about the man. It seemed she was quite hesitant to bring him up...somewhat unsure of something?
"You both know of Ardyn and Cauis?" He questioned, suddenly finding himself unsure of how to proceed. This was becoming potentially a dangerous game to play. One that he was unsure he would be able to win unless he somehow managed to finally reach out to the Fayth here.

I live for the people of Spira, and would have gladly died for them, but no more!
Yuna blinked slightly, taken aback that Kana-Ei did not appear to know her father’s name. She had assumed that he was the reason why the summoner’s demeaner had chilled earlier, but it looked like she had been mistaken. Perhaps she had even imagined it. People were quite temperamental after all. There could have been any number of reasons why he would have been briefly put-out.
“Braska,” she said with a slightly sad smile. “He was a good man. I’m proud to call him my father for that. Not just for what he did for Spira.” At this point, it would have been hard for her to even picture his face anymore if it weren’t for the statue of him in the temple. The thought struck her a bit, but she was used to smiling while people talked about her father. She knew how to pretend like nothing was wrong.
As the trio continued their discussion, Yuna blinked a bit in surprise when Kana-Ei demanded to know what she meant by the Baaj Temple being lost. She gave him a careful look for a moment, unsure if he was pulling her leg, but the genuine pain in his expression took her aback and she pressed one hand to her mouth. “I’m so sorry,” she murmured, reflecting earlier on what he’d said about being from Baaj. “I…think that we may be talking about two different eras of Baaj Temple. I don’t think you have anything to worry about.” She didn’t know how that was possible when the island had fallen to Sin long before even her grandparents’ birth, but it wasn’t unheard of for Sin to propel people forward in time. She’d met two people who were from Zanarkand after all. And as painful as it was to reflect on Tidus, she had believed him and Sir Jecht immediately. She owed Kana-Ei the same courtesy.
“Please. Can we talk more after this?” She asked, trying to be more gentle this time. She hadn’t meant to tell him about the fall of his city in such an accidentally callous way, and she hoped to make up for it. “We can compare notes on the Spira we know.” It felt rude to do so in front of Aera when she would just be sitting there out of the loop, but she hoped that he would agree to it once the trio had dispersed.
Aera spoke up and thanked both of them for sharing, and Yuna nodded and gave her a slight smile, though she wasn’t sure if it reached her eyes. This conversation had been enlightening and upsetting at the same time, and she needed a moment to process. She was grateful when Aera changed the subject by saying that she would like her assistance on a different matter.
“Of course,” Yuna sat up straighter with a more genuine smile. “What can I do for you?”
Her smile slowly slipped as Aera mentioned Ardyn, and it fell entirely when the blonde woman asked where she could find him, seemingly close to tears. Yuna stared at her, at a loss for words for a moment, and that was when Kana-Ei chimed in, sounding as shocked as she felt.
“You know him too?” She murmured to Kana-Ei, feeling something cold sink into her stomach as she remembered the older man’s indulgent laugh and the way his eyes had bled black. Why anyone would seek him out except to finally send him to the Farplane was beyond her, and she dug her nails into the folds of her dress as she took a deep breath. Whatever their experiences with Ardyn had been, she had to make sure that they understood how dangerous he was.
“I met him in a hospital in Provo,” she said reluctantly. “He never told me his name, but Caius thought his description matched the Ardyn that he knew.” She gave Aera a bit of a pleading look. “But please. Don’t go alone. You said that on your world, you’re known as the Oracle? That means you’re in danger around him. He called me an Oracle just before he tried to kill me. I didn’t know then what he meant.” She was going too fast. She knew that, and yet the words couldn’t stop sliding off her tongue as she remembered it. The rattling breaths of the man that he’d turned to a monster. The glowing red swords that had surrounded him. How easily he had fought an aeon and laughed as Yuna had bled on the floor.
“I believe that he’s the one spreading the plague in Provo,” she continued after a moment. “I watched him infect a man that I couldn’t save. And I would be dead now if Shiva hadn’t answered my call.” She swallowed slightly, hoping that her words had reached Aera as she directed her last point straight at Kana-Ei.
“He is an unsent. An old one I think. He fought Shiva as an equal, and so I failed to send him.” It was painful to admit her failure when sending souls to the Farplane was part of her duty. But she needed both of them to understand the man that they were talking about.
I'm Lost but I'm hopeful and what it all comes down to is that EVERYTHING is gonna be fine fine fine
Aera turned her gaze away as the two began to talk of their shared past. Still she couldn't help to listen and she frowned at the differences in what they knew. It struck a little to close and her heart dropped for the both of them. She had felt the same way when she talked with Caius. So mysterious the way time worked and ebbed and flowed even after one was gone. She found it even more confounding that it twisted and melded and dropped people here. What divine course of action was causing such a thing to occur?
Aera nodded as Kana-Ei asked if she knew both Caius and Ardyn. Well her Ardyn. This monster using his name was someone else. It had to be. "Well," Aera began to explain a slight hesitation to bring it up, "I met Caius in Sonora to the north. He pointed me towards this place as a place to pray." Aera wrenched her hands not daring to look at either in the eye lest they give her the same pitying look that man had. Aera became more crest fallen as Yuna recited her encounter with the daemonic man in Provo.
She sighed as Yuna begged her not to go looking for him alone. "But," she said reaching out a hand in explanation. "Very well." She calmed sitting straighter and looking at them both side to side trying to appear stronger than she felt. "Back on Eos, I knew an Ardyn. We were quite close, he and I." Aera closed her eyes for a brief moment as memories of their yellow field danced in her mind's eye, and his soft laughter played like a haunting melody near her ears. "To hear that someone with the same name is a daemon, well, I must make sure for myself that it is not my betrothed." It was important that she stress how close they were. Perhaps it would sway their hearts over fear. She turned to Kana-Ei, "Would please tell of the Ardyn you met?"
My life passes vainly by, as I watch the long rains fall.
There was a reverence in the way that Yuna spoke about her father Braska that inferred he had done something mighty for Spira. Yet, it was meaningless to Kana-Ei, this was the first time he had heard of the man. He nodded along, deciding it best to not say anything. While he had a very low opinion of Yuna, he was not going to question her on this.
Her apology rang emptily in his ears. Almost like she were across the sea yelling out to him. Feeling the hot tears stinging his eyes, blurring his vision Kana let out several deep, ragged breaths. It was all he could do to stop them from falling. That was the reality of life. He shouldn't cry about it. Yuna asked that they speak about it later. Craning his neck down into his chest, he hunched over. The dark locks obscuring his face as he worked on composing himself. Clearing away the wet feeling from his lashline with his ringed hand, he let out one final deep breath. There is no going home now. It took him longer than he would have liked, but he would raise his head and look at both the other summoner and Aera.
"Of course. Forgive me Aera, Yuna." His tone was even and full of resignation.
He would then listen as the two women explained how they knew Ardyn and Caius. The story Yuna told was jarring in its lack of similarity to what Ardyn had informed him. Any attempt of keeping his emotions to himself went out the window as he became increasingly more concerned. There was genuine terror in Yuna's voice as she discussed something that sounded more like a horrid unsent than the eccentric stagemaster he had met in Provo. It cast doubts about who was telling the truth. Trying to process, he listened on as Aera mentioned that the Ardyn she knew was a much more benevolent man. Something that still didn't fully align with the man he had met but seemed more comprehensible. Though...the timeliness about him meeting Ardyn, being informed of the Starscourge, Ardyn disappearing, and the events of the Hospice was very convenient. When he later visited the Hospice, the treating nurses said that the men had not shown any signs to indicate that Plague. The window, which Kana swore was closed when they entered was also open.
The blonde haired woman's question forced him into a spot. Kana-Ei hadn't thought about how he would discuss knowing the man without potentially raising alarm within Yuna that he was aware of what now seemed to be a false story. Thinking on his feet was not an enjoyable activity for the young man. But he did think of himself as tactical - he would just tell the observable facts of their meeting. He still had no idea who was telling the truth.
"I met Caius while assisting a rather bizarre adventurer by the name of Kahlil explore an ancient ruin in the middle of the Reikin Sands. Ardyn..." He paused for a moment, praying to Yevon he was going to get through this without earning the ire of either woman, "Ardyn, I only met in passing in Provo. He wanted assistance with finding someone. I believed that St. Trevellia's Hospice would be an ideal place to start...He vanished before we could get any further than that. Shortly after, one of the patients met their end to the plague."
Looking at Yuna and then Aera, he attempted to discern their reactions to what he had said. Totally unsure about how to proceed with the conversation, he tentatively spoke again.
"The Ardyn I met did not appear like a murderer. Quite dramatic though. He certainly had a way of telling stories. He was the one that informed me of the Starscourge coming to this world." Kana would fall silent and place his ribboned hand on his mouth trying to make sense of all the information he had heard
It was dawning on him how little he had actually learned of Ardyn or what his motives for looking for Yuna were. Had he been mislead?
"Is it possible that we are all referring to different men?"
Kana-Ei had been fighting tears after she had spoken of Baaj. He kept his head down, but Yuna was certain of it. Feeling horrible, she pressed one hand to her chest and glanced away, wishing that something she could say would make him feel better. Still, she couldn’t imagine how she would have felt if she had heard that Besaid had been destroyed by Sin. It would have been unthinkable and overwhelming. She would have absolutely needed a moment to herself, so she stayed quiet to give him the time that he needed. Hopefully she could clarify things with him soon.
As the discussion turned to Ardyn, Yuna was overwhelmed at Aera’s passionate description of the Ardyn that she knew. Yuna sucked in a breath as Aera admitted that he had been her fiancée, and she pressed one hand to her mouth in thought. That certainly complicated things, and it was a little heartbreaking to picture what awaited the soft-spoken woman in Provo. Still, it didn’t necessarily have to disagree with her account of things, and Yuna reluctantly voiced her thoughts on the topic. “…I believe you. That he was a good man. But…the Ardyn that I met appeared to be a very old unsent. That can change even the purest of souls.”
Yuna tried to balance honesty with keeping some of Aera’s hopes alive, but she wasn’t sure how well she had succeeded. She lowered her head slightly as Kana-Ei detailed his encounter with the red-haired man. “He was looking for someone?” She asked cautiously, before frowning slightly at the timing of Ardyn vanishing and someone contracting the plague shortly afterward. All of them should have seen the connection, so Yuna didn’t try to point it out. Instead, she hesitated slightly as she mulled over Kana-Ei’s comment that perhaps they had all met a different Ardyn.
“It’s possible,” she said, but she wasn’t too sure that was the case. Particularly with her and Kana-Ei, since both of their experiences with him had been inside hospitals in Provo. “I suppose there’s only one way to find out.” Yuna clasped her hands in her lap as she looked between the two of them. “I was planning to return to Provo after this anyway. They have a desperate need of healers for the plague. Would you mind if I accompanied you on your journey, Aera? I worry for your safety if you’re seeking out the man that I met. He’s as strong as Shiva—if not stronger than her.”
She didn’t want to speak for Kana-Ei, but she was hoping he would offer as well. He was the first person from Spira that she’d met here, and she didn’t want to let that go after such a brief initial conversation. Anyway, he was likely a great healer if he was also a summoner. Provo could certainly use his assistance.
I'm Lost but I'm hopeful and what it all comes down to is that EVERYTHING is gonna be fine fine fine
Aera clasped her hands together as she awaited both of their versions of the Ardyn they had met. How differently would it vary from the monster Caius had painted, and the man she knew so dearly. Involuntarily her smile turned to a pursed lip and furrowed brow as she thought over what Caius had said before giving her attention to Kana-Ei as he spoke. She hmmed as she absorbed his account of Ardyn. "Dramatic? It was more of Somnus's demeanor to be the dramatic serious one of the two." She had to admit even she were more dramatic than Ardyn especially if annoyed with either the two Caelums. Still he knew of the Starcrouge and must be of Eos. "I would hope to believe these are different men," she nodded looking up to the sky and the stars that dotted it, "But I need see with my own eyes that it is or isn't."
"I would enjoy your company," she responded when Yuna begged to go with her, "And I believe protest would be useless anyway." She gave a playful wink and made her way to her feet as she nodded at the two of them. "I presume you'd like to speak of Spira in terms that I would have neither thought or opinion on." Aera decided to give them time to speak privately and time for her to dwell on their words and her own actions going forward from this point."Then it's decided. I'll search for passage to Provo." She gave a soft smile towards Kana-Ei, "I do hope you would join us if your traveling in the same direction." She then nodded to Yuna and him in turn before turning from them making her way towards the string of pilgrims and their caravans.
My life passes vainly by, as I watch the long rains fall.
Had they been there that long? The sun had set, the stars glittered overhead. Kana-Ei noted the expression that draped over Aera's features over Yuna's description. Her own reaction to his description was much less committal.
Even he had to admit that the idea was likely preposterous and was only suggested as a means of not creating a tense dynamic between himself and Yuna. He looked at the demure brunette in a different light. He still did not fully trust her, but the logic of her account seemed a little more cohesive than what the mysterious Ardyn's had been. She did at the very least appear to be genuine in her words and actions. Though, hadn't he been so sure about her guilt?
Yuna stated her intentions to return to Provo, in no small part to heal people suffering from the plague. How odd. Surely someone that was as much of a monster as Ardyn had described would not put themselves in that kind of direct danger...again. Even if it meant creating an almost saintly impression of them. Self-preservation surely would be higher on the list for almost anyone bar the staunchest of souls. Even he had doubts about the notion of returning to Provo. The concern he had about potentially being contaminated after the hospice was nothing to scoff at. His own thoughts were unclear. Though she did not extend the offer formally to Kana-Ei, he could see in her eyes that was what she wanted. For what reason, he found himself questioning.
He stared out to the Divider as Aera responded. She appeared to agree to join Yuna on the way to Provo. Clearly to find out if this Ardyn was her beloved. He stared down into the lightly wooded glade. This part of the world was so serene. Much like the Remiem plains. Lanterns were being lit, creating twinkling lights in the distance that trailed slowly towards and away from the Divider as presumably the devout went to offer their final prayers. The sight from their vantage was rather picturesque. Aera offered the suggestion that Yuna and he might want to discuss Spira in more detail. That is absolutely the last thing I want to do right now. He turned back to the women, bowing his head slightly as he spoke.
"I apologise Lady Yuna, but if it is all the same to you, I would like a moment to process my thoughts. Perhaps another time soon?"
Aera then also reaffirmed that there would be no truly polite way for him to get out of going to Provo. After all, his plans after here had been mercurial at best. He supposed it would be one way to resolve this mystery he had ended up embroiled in. He was not overtly thrilled about it though. He liked Aera well enough, and was interested to know more about her. With Yuna...well, she was his only link back to Spira as it stood.
"Of course Aera, I would gladly accompany you back to Provo. They are in dire need of healers" He responded, in a self-effacing manner.
"In truth, part of me feels guilty for coming here and not staying."
As they began to leave for the carriage, he looked back down to the steady stream of lights moving through the deep blue space up to the glowing monument. How this place had reminded him of the Farplane. How desperately it made him wish to be there.
