Following a tonberry perhaps wasn't the easiest thing to get used to so Keimusho understood Squall's uneasiness when he stated that it would be the last time he follows a tonberry anywhere. "At least we didn't have to follow the behemoth.", Keimusho jokingly said. Once the duo reunited with their elderly companion, he thought it would be the end of it, but he would never have guessed how wrong he could've been. Squall would demand the ghost that they be shown the exit and the ghost proved happy to oblige, except that the method was most definitely not expected or intended by any of the living present. As promised, but first a parting gift. Their experience with the ghost this day instantly told Keimusho that this was no reward. The sky blackened and the ground beneath them shook. The ninja only seen it a handful of times, but no question about it this was in fact the spell, Meteor. Before the spell came into contact with anything Squall casted a defensive spell on all three of them. For further protection Keimusho activated the Shade Shift ability as he started to run. In similar fashion to his companions he was sent crashing to the ground.
Rising to his feet, Keimusho was bewildered that they the now found themselves at the edge of the forest. However, this was probably the least odd thing that Keimusho experienced this day. Keimusho had a sigh of relief seeing that Squall and the old man were okay. Suddenly, Keimusho remembered that the ghost gave the old man's memories as an incentive to undergo the nightmare which was his trial. "Are you alright? Do you remember who you are now?", Keimusho asked the old man. "Yes son, I'm alright.... My name is... Aldrich. Yes... that was it.", the old man responded. The uncertainty of his answer prompted Keimusho took ask yet another question. "If I might ask, can you elaborate how far your memory goes back?" It would appear as if the elder struggled to to pinpoint a memory, but then again it probably was a question anyone would struggle with. "If it's something too difficult then you don't have to answer.", Keimusho said after realizing how he struggled with that question. "N-no son. You boys have already risked so much for me. It would be ungracious of me not to give you an answer. I remember living in a village, can't remember who else lived there. One day there was some black creature spouting sommat about a princes-" Keimusho didn't need to hear anymore to know what the old man was going to say. It sounded exactly like a few days prior when he rescued him. "Enough. I think I know the rest of your story." Before this point, Keimusho was ready to say maybe the wasn't all that bad. However, after gauging what the old man remembered he grew a resentment for the ghost. It seemed that only the knowledge of his name and the massacre of his village was granted to him. His anger would've been symbolized by the look on his face if it weren't for the fact that he wore a mask, but it was clear in his tone of voice. "Godsdamn that ghost.", he muttered under his breath.
The voice of the ghost spoke to them once more. Hey I never said ALL of his memories now did I? I fulfilled my end of the bargain, you have no room to complain. The ninja did not respond to the ghost he was done playing games with them. "Let's get out of here.", Keimusho said after realizing the ghost had nothing else of relevance to say.
Squall had briefly been distracted by the view in front of them, but he looked around for Keimusho once he’d seen his fill. Thankfully, the ninja had crashed to the ground right next to them, and he appeared to be unhurt, if as irritated by the sudden Meteor spell as Squall was. The masked man got to his feet, and Squall followed suit while brushing the leaves and dirt off his leather pants. At this point, he felt like he’d be fine not stepping foot into a forest again for a long time.
Keimusho started to question the old man about what he remembered, and they finally had a name to go with his face. Alrdich. It looked like the ghost had kept his promise after all in restoring the man’s memories. “Black creature?” Squall questioned about the thing that had destroyed Alrdich’s village, but from the way Keimusho cut him off, he decided it was probably best not to question the old man too hard.
As Keimusho continued to evaluate Alrdich’s condition, it became increasingly obvious that the ghost had only restored a portion of his memories. Squall scowled behind them in the direction of the forest, agreeing with the ninja’s curt attitude that they should leave. “Even partial memories are better than none,” he supplied to Alrdich, unsure if that would make him feel better or not, but he knew from experience that it was true. As a consequence of using GFs, Squall himself still only had vague memories of some parts of his life.
“Don’t have to tell me twice.” The SeeD was beyond ready to get out of the illusion woods. Brushing aside some foliage, Squall followed the trail out of the forest, blinking and shielding his eyes for a moment once they were in the full sunlight. They’d been in the thicket of trees for so long that the light was a little blinding before his eyes adjusted. Stretching a bit, Squall was glad to finally able to sheathe his gunblade at his side.
“You said you two are going to Torensten, right? I am too. It shouldn’t be too far from here.” Normally he wouldn’t offer to finish out the journey with strangers now that they were out of danger, but he’d grown to like Keimusho after their series of odd encounters. Squall liked people who were capable, so he didn't mind at least getting to the gates of Torensten with the pair.

"Perhaps you are right about that Squall.", Keimusho responded to Squall's statement that partial memories were better than no memories. "If nothing else we now know that there are methods to restoring memories.", the ninja continued. "Even if I don't get my memories back it isn't the end of the world. I can always make new memories. The future is more important than the past," Aldric declared. This was perhaps his way of bestowing his 'elderly wisdom', which surprisingly he still retains despite being bereft of majority of his memory. Before the trio set out, Keimusho had remembered that the old man had once again lost his walking stick. Luckily it appeared that it would be the last time that Keimusho would have to provide him with another one. Keimusho once again climbed a tree to cut down a branch that could function as a cane. After he climbed back down he handed the stick to Aldrich. "Thank you son," the elderly man responded.
Squall went onto ask whether the pair were going to Torensten. "Yes, that's right. I have to find someplace for Aldrich to live. I can't justify taking him everywhere I go, it's too dangerous." Though Keimusho did not wish to admit it, Aldrich was a liability especially on the battlefield. Continuing to protect was going to be next to impossible. The only reason he managed to do so this day was with Squall's help. Though that did not mean that he didn't want to help the old man, which is why he figured that the least he could do is help the old man find a place to live. After the ninja was done handing the elder his makeshift cane, Squall asked whether he was ready to depart. The ninja would respond with a resounding, "Yes."
Squall paused slightly as Keimusho said that at least now they knew that there were ways of restoring memories in this world. “I guess you’re right.” He turned back towards the forest, wondering if perhaps that meant that the ghost would be able to help him out if the memory loss from the GFs got worse for him while he was in Zephon. Not that he trusted the malignant spirit in the slightest, but it was something to remember if he got desperate enough. He refused to forget Rinoa’s face at any rate.
Aldrich volunteered that the future mattered more than the past, which Squall supposed was correct in theory. Still, the past might have been set in stone, but it also gave him something to hold onto so that he didn’t flounder now that he no longer had his path set out before him like he had in SeeD. He wasn’t sure what he’d do without his goal of finding a way home, so he privately disagreed, but there was no point in voicing that. Whatever kept the old man’s hopes alive.
Keimusho had to quickly fashion a cane for Alrdich for the third time since Squall had stumbled across them. This was getting ridiculous, and Squall hoped that they wouldn’t encounter anymore problems on the way to Torensten. He and Keimusho were slightly worse for wear after all their battles, so he wouldn’t mind a quiet stroll for the rest of the journey. While Keimusho was up in the tree working, Squall was left on the ground with Aldrich, and he hoped the old man didn’t mind his silence too much. Now that all the threats were gone, he was starting to retreat a little into his own head as he planned his next move, but people tended to assume he was just being unapproachable when he didn’t talk.
Once Keimusho was done with the cane, he handed it over to Alrdich and agreed that they were both going to Torensten as well. “Guess we’ll have to put up with each other for a little longer then,” he said with a faint smirk that edged into a smile as he turned away from them to face the open road. “Let’s get the hell away from this forest.” Squall started down the trail, leaving the darkened forest at all three of their backs. Though he’d never admit it, it was kind of nice to have the company this time.
