Keimusho’s hearing from his right side was slightly muffled as part of his horn was missing. Staying close to Squall would also help remedy that fact for the time being should they have need for communication. “It actually will grow back fortunately, however the hearing from my right horn will be compromised for the time being.” What followed was just silence until the ghost would speak to them yet again warning them not to leave at the risk of being disqualified from the trial. “As if we would leave anyway.”, the ninja muttered. The sounds of a large creature followed soon afterwards, but soon the sound of a scream followed. Both of these sounds were loud enough for Keimusho to make out from his left horn, but he could not make out the location from which came from. Thankfully staying close to Squall allowed him to study the direction that he was facing and where he was looking so it gave him an idea of where these sounds were coming from.
Squall then asked whether he believed that the ghost was playing another trick on them. “I assume so, perhaps a ploy to get us disqualified. Even if it’s not, we currently have our hands full.”
The ninja followed this statement by weaving the handsigns Chi, Jin, and finally Ten. A gust of wind a result of Huton briefly appeared around the ninja’s body as he proceeded to weave another sign, Kassatsu. “Let’s see if I am able to slow their movements." The ninja walked over towards the end of the circle that this trial had them in, specifically towards the edge where whatever was approaching then would enter from. He weaved the signs Jin, Ten, and lastly Chi. He would place his hand on the ground which would create a circle of corrupted earth around the area which he stood. After this was finished the ninja went back towards his original position, next to Squall. “I suggest that we focus on taking them down as swiftly as possible. I don’t have any healing abilities at my disposal. Not any that can heal others at least.”
Squall nodded when the ninja explained that his horn actually would grow back, though it would affect his hearing for a while. He was glad to hear that he hadn’t permanently disfigured the man. Squall wasn’t the type to get attached to someone while first meeting them (or even after knowing them for a while if he was being honest), but if they made it out of this death-trap of a forest, then he wouldn’t mind seeing Keimusho again. He could almost imagine Rinoa’s smug expression at him being forced to work with a near stranger, and he waved it aside as he tried to focus on the problem in front of them.
Keimusho agreed that the screams in the forest were probably a ploy, so he nodded and tried not to listen as they got more desperate and pleading. They had their own issues to deal with right now. Even if it wasn’t a trap, that person was on their own, same as them. Keimusho started to prepare for the battle ahead of them with his own brand of magic that Squall was still curious about. Since they still had a few precious seconds while something approached, the SeeD followed suit. He cast a quick Aura spell on himself that would enable him to use Renzokuken more often and he followed up with a Protect spell on both of them. One of the things that was approaching sounded big, so he was guessing that they could use the extra protection from physical damage.
“Agreed,” Squall muttered when the ninja finished his own preparations and suggested that they take them down quickly. “I have some healing magic stored up if we need it, but every spell’s going to weaken me a bit until I can find a monster to draw it back from.” He’d previously learned that magic didn’t work that way in Zephon, so hopefully his brief explanation of junctioning made sense. Keimusho didn’t really need the details at least.
The rustling in the underbrush grew louder, and Squall readied his gunblade in front of him. He had been expecting an ambush, so he was surprised when what stepped out of the forest looked to be a large family of chocobos. Brow furrowing slightly, he glanced at the white-haired man next to him before looking back as the bird closest to him approached, slowed significantly by the preparations that the ninja had made. Squall held out a cautious hand, remembering that wild chocobos tended to be skittish, and the bird suddenly lunged forward and sank needle-sharp teeth into his arm. Squall hissed in pain as the illusion around them was suddenly broken and he realized that what had actually attacked him was a Grendel.
His bitten arm was still holding his sword, so he used his left to cast a Water spell straight into the small dragon’s eyes, forcing it to rear back and release him. Squall took a quick inventory of his wound, deciding that it was better than it could have been between his thick leather jacket and the Protect spell that he had cast earlier. He’d wait to use Cure on himself—he didn’t mind a little blood and he didn’t know how many they’d need later.
“Might be a rough one,” Squall muttered to Keimusho before preparing to leap into the crowd of monsters. “They’re on my world. Look out for its lightning breath and its tail.” With that brief advice, he dove into the fray, sliding under a tail strike as he swung his sword into one. As the minutes passed, the battle blended together into a mass chaos of dodging and swordstrikes. It seemed like however many he felled that more would appear, and the air crackled with their lightning breath attacks. Eventually, there was a lull, and Squall dodged back closer to Keimusho to catch his breath.
“How you holding up?” He asked the ninja as a loud crash in the woods signaled that the large beast he’d heard earlier was finally making an appearance. He turned to look at the white-haired man, but Ultimecia was in his spot again. Squall flinched a bit at the illusion, but he tried to force himself to look past it. “Ready for the big one?” He asked the specter of his enemy instead.

The threat that awaited Keimusho and Squall was imminent, their trial had begun. Squall made his preparations by casting Protect on the two of them. However, it was initially perplexing when the first wave of enemies appeared. They were Chocobos? This gave a unorthodox impression. The ninja had encountered wild chocobos in his homeworld and these feral birds proved more bellicose than their domestic counterparts (at least those from his world); however, they certainly couldn't be described as the most formidable of foes. This begged an inquiry to the ghost's intentions. Though the truth evinced itself when two of the chocobos traversed through the corrupted earth situated via the Doton technique. As intended the creatures would be slowed as they walked through it and sustained damage in the process, though it seemed that it inflicted more to it than the average monster. Soon the monster was revealed as some sort of dragon, at least that was the sole conjecture that was accessible to the ninja, though the speculation was irrelevant in the moment in time. The only concern was dispatching the creatures.
Unfortunately, only those two of the Grendels managed to fall victim to Keimusho's Doton. The rest circled around Keimusho's technique to confront the duo. One of the monster's managed to sink it's teeth into Squall arm and was met by a water spell. Keimusho would soon find trouble of his own as three of the monsters came towards him. Two of them moderately damaged, but enraged by Keimusho's Doton technique. The other was completely unharmed as they entered the area after Doton dissipated. Keimusho's gaze shifted and as such his stance did as well. He held his kodachi as the samurai would their katana. Sole reliance on his ninjutsu abilities was not going to get the job done in the long run so instead he would rely on iaijustu. He would wait until his adversaries grew closer since the kodachi was a short blade than the katana and his reach would be shorter as a result. As the grendels pounced at the Au Ra, Keimusho launched his attack. It began with a single horizontal slash called Fuga would hit all three monsters who would then attempt to circle Keimusho. Two more slashes that seemed to be accompanied by cherry blossoms connected with the dragons as the ninja responded with Oka. This would be enough to slay the grendels already damaged by Doton and left only a single one to be dealt with at the moment.
The ninja rushed towards the remaining dragon and it at a close range prepared its breath attack, but would be met with the heel of Keimusho's zori. He would push the dragon's head away with the foot to redirect the lightning breath away from him, the intended target. It was beneficial for Squall to warn the ninja of the breath as he wouldn't have been able to do this otherwise. After the dragon finished casting the lightning breath, it was met with yet another kick followed by Yukikaze, a slash covered in what resembled ice. After this many more grendels would follow and it seemed to be a near endless endeavor . This was perhaps the most Keimusho had to swing his sword since coming to Zephon. Ninjutsu usually would suffice in most situations or some cases be the only course of action available.
Eventually the number of grendels lessened. Once this opening was gained the duo regrouped. Squall asked how he was holding up as the ninja was pulling his sword out of the flesh of yet another dispatched dragon. "Pretty well since it seems that we are making progress. Let's finish this." Fitting words as the sounds of the large creature grew louder.
“Yeah,” Squall agreed, eyes on the forest in front of them. The undergrowth continued to shake as something large approached. “Let’s finish this.” A clawed hand extended through the trees, and Squall dodged to the side with a curse as another thunder spell shot towards them, separating the two as Squall was forced to roll towards the right side of the clearing.
Squall had thought that he recognized the dark indigo fur growing over the creature’s claws, but he still was taken aback as the beast forced its way into the arena, nearly knocking over a tree on its way. “A behemoth,” he muttered, adjusting his grip on his sword as he wondered if the two of them could take one down alone. Well, they’d have to. It was that or die trying at this point since leaving the clearing would get them disqualified from the trial. He wasn’t entirely sure that behemoths were even supposed to live in forests, but that hardly mattered since one was standing right in front of them.
Readying his gunblade, Squall drew magic off of the behemoth, throwing the Tornado spell that he acquired straight back at it in an attempt to knock it off balance. When the winds had settled, he leapt towards the creature, managing to get a strike in with his gunblade before it roared, breathing out a Flare spell as it did. The fire threw him back towards the trees and badly singed his arms even through his jacket. Squall hissed between his teeth, hoping that the firey remnants falling around them wouldn’t set the trees ablaze. As he rose to his feet, he cast a quick Cure spell on himself and threw one towards Keimusho as well. He didn’t have time to fully check on the ninja, but he figured it was better to assume that he needed it than not.
Enough time had passed that Squall was able to use his Renzokuken technique, so he rushed forward, managing to slash at the behemoth a few times before he leapt in the air and spun in a circle with his blade as he blasted it backwards. Lion Heart wasn’t a move that he used often since it took so much out of him, and he stumbled a bit as he landed, feeling winded. Hopefully Keimusho could finish it or at least hold it off while he recovered. The ninja had more than proven himself in all their battles so far.

The large creature was finally revealed to be a behemoth. Keimusho prepared himself by casting mudra signs Ten and Chi and would bide his time before activating the ninjutsu technique. Squall would seize the beast's attention with Tornado which is when the ninja would activate Raiton. The bolt of lightning would connect directly with the top of the behemoths head, though the effort was simply shrugged off as its attention stayed on Squall. After a hit from Squall, the creature roared and would cast Flare afterwards.
Because of the limited space the area allows, a successful dodge attempt was improbable. Instead of evasion the ninja opted for a more direct form of defense in Shade Shift. A 360 degree spin signaled the activation of the technique, however, this did not completely nullify the damage which caused first degree burns and a knockback. The inkury was quickly remedied by a Cure via Squall. To ensure that Flare would not set the forest aflame, the ninja would weaves the mudra signs Ten, Chi, Jin to cast Suiton. The water would geyser in the area and would quench the flames result of the behemoth. When Keimusho returned his attention to the beast, Squall had inflicted slash wounds on it, but was on the ground fatigued. The beast was similarly winded from Squall's attack but was ready to charge at Squall once again. The beast would've attempted to clawed down Squall, but Keimusho tossed a smoke bomb in the vicinity of the behemoth. While disoriented by the smoke, the ninja sneaked behind the creature and struck it with his kodachi activating Trick Attack.
When the smoke dissipated, the beast shifted its aim towards the Au Ra who was now studying the location of the slash wounds. Keimusho decided that it would be best to inflict as much damage while stalling for Squall recovery. Keimusho's hands met to weave a single sign and far eastern symbols would surround the ninja's body. The behemoth would try to ram into the ninja only to be met with two slashes in a wound that Squall inflicted to the chest. Though it was not two in the traditional sense. Keimusho's shadows had become animate and as a result when he struck his shadows would do the same.
Keimusho would continue to slash the behemoth in the same area repeatedly until the behemoth brought its claw to the ninja who could not hear the behemoth move it due to the horn injury, knocking him back and down to the ground. The assault left the behemoth severely wounded but also equally as enraged. Similarly, Keimusho had a slash wound his chest. The behemoth attempted to pounce on the ninja while he still on the ground. The ninja would weaved the signs Ten and Chi on the ground and cast Raiton once more as the lightning bolt crashed on the airborne behemoth knocking it to the ground. Keimusho would use this newly bought time to slowly raise himself from the ground.
Squall braced himself as the behemoth tried to claw him while he was down, but Keimusho came to his rescue by tossing something that unleashed a cloud of smoke between them. Squall took the opportunity to roll away from the beast, feeling the air from the missed swing rustle his hair as he scrambled back. Judging by the roar the creature let out, the ninja had also managed to wound it while it was blind and still going for him.
As the smoke dissipated, Squall blinked a bit as Keimusho and what appeared to be shadowy figures circled the behemoth to slash at it. He wondered if the smoke was still affecting his vision, but he didn’t have time to dwell on it, as the behemoth slashed a claw across the front of the ninja’s chest and sent the man crashing to the ground. Tensing, Squall decided that his brief moment of rest had to be finished as he leapt to his feet to intervene, but Keimusho was faster as he weaved his hands into different patterns while he fell. A crack of thunder knocked the behemoth down to the earth just as Squall got to his feet, and he rushed to the white-haired man’s side as he hauled himself up.
“Doing okay?” Squall asked without taking his eyes off the behemoth. What he was really asking was how bad the man’s wound was, but he trusted him to interpret that correctly. They needed to hurry this up. The battle was taking a lot out of both of them.
“Say that I can keep this thing distracted,” Squall said as the creature slowly hauled itself to its feet, looking worse for wear as it leaked blood from several wounds. “Think you could do what you did to the ochu?” If not, there was always a back-up plan. Squall just hoped this would be the last thing that the ghost would throw at them. Though the fact that they had followed a tonberry here and had seen no sign of it yet didn’t bode too well.

"Yeah... it's nothing that can't be healed." Keimusho said closing his eyes. The ninja took a deep breath which casted the self healing spell Merciful Eyes. It wasn't as potent as the Cure he received earlier, but it was enough to return to fighting form. It was obvious that the fight with the behemoth caused both him and Squall great fatigue. The bright side was that the behemoth was practically on it's last legs. It was clear that the injuries inflicted on it were much more severe than the damage that Keimusho and Squall received mainly due to the few but essential healing abilities in their arsenal.
Squall would ask Keimusho if he could do what he could do the same attack he done to the Ochu and the short answer was yes, but the ninja thought they could do something more efficient. "Honestly one of those attacks is better suited for multiple targets.", he said referring to Katon. "The only reason I utilized it earlier was due to Ochu's weakness to the flames. Also, our space here is rather limited. I would rather not risk setting the forest ablaze as the behemoth almost did earlier." Keimusho took a moment to think. "However, since you're willing to grab it's attention for the time being... I can do you one better, something that should put the beast down judging from the damage it already has suffered. I'll use three attacks on the beast and they will all be twice as powerful than normal. The drawback? I'll have to use them all from a single position. If I move it is cancelled, the same if I wait too long to use the attacks. As long as you keep its attention this drawback is practically nullified. It is up to you. "
Keimusho quickly explained that unfortunately he wouldn’t be able to use the same move that he had on the Ochu, but as the behemoth sluggishly got to its feet, he said that he could do him one better. Squall kept a careful eye on the creature as he listened to the white-haired man’s explanation. He said that he could do three attacks that should end the beast, with the caveat that he would have to do them all from one specific spot. In other words, Squall would still need to serve as a distraction.
“You’ve got it,” he answered while he readied his gunblade. “Just try not to take too long.” He didn’t relish the thought of fighting a behemoth alone, but it was a heavily injured one at least. He was sure that he could keep it on its metaphorical toes.
As the behemoth started to charge towards their location, Squall did his best to lead it away from Keimusho by diving over the creature’s claws and swiping its paw with his blade as he landed. He was forced to back off as it tried to impale him with a claw in retaliation, and he drew a Tornado spell from it as he backed away. Drawing magic from an enemy didn’t hurt the target exactly, but it was annoying and drained some magic, so he kept up a steady stream of drawing as he ran to the other side of the clearing from Keimusho. He seemed to have succeeded in aggravating the beast as it roared in irritation before charging in his direction.
Squall kept up the game of cat and mouse in an attempt to give Keimusho a chance to ready his attacks. He wasn’t entirely sure how long that would take, but he did his best to slowly lead the behemoth back towards the ninja since Keimusho had stated that he had to use them from one spot. When they had nearly reached the man again, the behemoth cast a Thundaga spell towards Squall, and he just barely managed to dodge out of the way. However, the behemoth made a move like it was going to cast the spell again as it faced Keimusho, and Squall froze for a split second before leaping in front of the ninja and taking the blow for him. Keimusho was how they were going to finish this, after all. He couldn’t let him get injured.
The force of the lightning flung Squall to the side, leaving nothing standing between the behemoth and Keimusho. He could only hope that the man was ready to go.

Keimusho nodded as Squall reminded him not to let to much time elude them. Once Squall had a grasp on the behemoth's attention, the ninja prepared himself. From his dogi fell four daggers, each occupying the four cardinal points respectively. The scarlet rune that materialized around him would indicate the start of Keimusho attack. The ninja would maintain his focus, biding his time for an opening in the battle that Squall and the behemoth were engaged in. The behemoth would eventually be maneuvered in the ninja's direction. Sensing that the opportunity to strike was forthcoming, the first mudra sign, Ten was woven.
The beast would grow irritable from a coalition of drained magic courtesy of Squall and the agony produced by severe wounds inflicted upon it. In retaliation to his opposition he casted Thundaga on them both, Squall avoided the attack intended for him and inherited the thunder meant for Keimusho to shield him from it. With Squall no longer capable of serving a means of distraction for the time being, this meant that Keimusho's had to strike now. The beast shifted its focus towards the static ninja and that was the moment that Keimusho struck by summoning a Fuma Shuriken larger in stature than normal. The projectile was flung towards the behemoth's torso, an area that was already subject to much of the ninja's assault. The monster roared as the shuriken lacerated into its flesh. Immediately afterwards the ninja wove his second sign, Chi.
Keimusho would utilize Raiton on the beast once again. The amplified lighting bolt would ground the behemoth just as the first one did prior. Unlike the first, the lighting managed to scorch the behemoth's flesh. With the beast still grounded, the ninja deemed it fit to finish it off. The ninja weaved the final mudra sign, Jin and activated Suiton. Underneath the monster would a large sum of water geyser from the ground, impaling it and leaving the beast executed. With the final attack finished, the runes surrounding the ninja subsided, allowing the ninja to once again roam freely. Which is what he would have done initially, if he didn't almost collapse from the fatigue. With a deep breath Keimusho managed to get himself together and plodded over to Squall to ensure his well being. "Are you alright?", asked Keimusho.
A familiar voice of the ghost echoed through area following a few minutes. Congratulations! You've managed to survive my trial. Follow your tonberry companion and you shall be escorted to the prize! The same tonberry that the duo trailed behind to attend their trial reemerged. Remaining silent, the ninja simply followed the course the tonberry made. The destination appeared to be near-identical to the trials location, except that a certain old man was there in the center. The essence of the ghost could be seen abandoning the old man's body accompanied by screams from the host.
Squall had been flung to the side by the lightning that had struck him, and he hissed in pain at the tremors that the attack had sent coursing through his body. He cast a quick Cure spell on himself as he hauled himself up to his knees. Pushing his hair back from his eyes, he grabbed for his gunblade, but as it turned out, he didn’t have to worry about Keimusho’s safety. Lucky for them both, it seemed he’d had enough time to prepare. The ninja made several hand signals that Squall hadn’t yet learned to read before he struck with three quick attacks. First, he threw an oversized weapon that embedded itself straight into the behemoth’s old wounds. As the beast roared and drew back, Keimusho hit him with a thunder attack that looked similar to the one that had saved his life earlier before a water geyser impaled straight through the creature, killing it on impact.
Squall carefully rose to his feet, cautiously circling around the behemoth in case it was just playing dead, but its milky eyes told him that it really was over. The woods around them were quiet now. For some reason, something in the back of Squall’s head whispered that it was wrong for it to end so suddenly, but he couldn’t put his finger on what was wrong. Waving that aside, he nodded as Keimusho came up and asked if he was okay. “You?” He asked in return, before the ghost’s voice suddenly echoed around the clearing.
“Congratulations! You've managed to survive my trial. Follow your tonberry companion and you shall be escorted to the prize!”
The tonberry from before was suddenly in front of them as if it had always been there, so Squall recoiled back a bit in surprise since the creatures weren’t exactly known for their speed. “This is the last time I follow a tonberry anywhere,” he muttered to Keimusho as the pair started to trail after it. The tonberry led them on a winding trek off of the forest path, and Squall was starting to worry that it was leading them astray when they finally emerged into a second clearing. It was very similar to the arena that they had fought in before, though the two had done a significant amount of damage to that clearing. The old man that had been travelling with Keimusho was standing in the dead center of the trees, and as the two walked forward to greet him, he let out a pained scream as the ghost was forcibly expelled from his body.
“Hey! Calm down. It's safe,” Squall tried as he gripped the man’s arm, but he really wasn’t the best at consoling people. He cast Keimusho a slightly helpless look as the old man continued to freak out even with the ghost outside of his body. Could this have something to do with the memories that it had promised to return to him? Maybe he had been better off without them if that was the case.
“Show us the way out,” Squall demanded, turning in a slow circle to try to locate the ghost. He was done playing this thing’s games.
“As promised.” The voice seemed to come from above them, but when Squall glanced up, there was nothing but the empty blue sky. “First, a parting gift.” As the sky blackened at an alarming rate and the ground started to faintly rumble, Squall realized what had bothered him about the behemoth’s death. Behemoths that were that strong always had one last defense mechanism. They cast Meteor with their last breath. Had the ghost somehow managed to hold the spell back until now?
Cursing under his breath, Squall grabbed the old man’s arm and yanked him into the trees after him. He trusted that Keimusho could look after himself, but they were in a tight spot if they had to look after a bystander during such a dangerous spell. Squall used the last vestiges of his magic to throw up Shell spells around the three of them to protect from magic, and that was when the first meteor crashed into the trees in front of them. The force of the impact flung Squall and the old man to the ground, and he did his best to shield him as the spell crashed to the earth around them. Eventually, everything turned quiet again, and the sky slowly returned to its previous shade of blue.
“I’ve decided. I really hate ghosts,” Squall muttered as he sat up. Glancing around, he tried to find Keimusho to see if he was okay, but his attention was caught by the view through the trees in front of him. “Well, look at that. Least he keeps his promises.” They had somehow returned to the forest path, and in front of them, the trail wound its way to a field outside the dense thicket of trees. They had made it to the edge of the forest.
