After the Ochu was dispatched, Squall asked a question on Keimusho's profession. For most this would be information that Keimusho would withhold due the nature of the shinobi, but Squall proved to be trustworthy for the little while that they've been around each other. In fact, Keimusho was starting to question whether going by an alias and concealing his nature as a shinobi in this world was entirely necessary. It was not as if his clan existed here nor any other shinobi as far as he knows. If there are other shinobi, then they most likely reside on other continents or are from other worlds like he is. "Bah, I guess there is no point in concealing this while I'm stuck in this world... Back in my world I would be referred to as many different things, but the most common would be ninja or shinobi. A profession most known for espionage and if necessary assassinations."
After the old man ceased his questionable cane-swinging episode. Squall's behavior suddenly struck as odd as well. He suddenly called out a name that he hadn't heard, perhaps a name of something or someone of Squall's homeland. This alone would've been odd enough, until Squall drew his gunblade and proceed to swing at nothing. What was going on here?
After Squall asked if they heard anything. Keimusho responded with, "No not a thing."
Though Keimusho would not be exempt from these strange occurrences. Suddenly a raging headache struck the Au Ra. Was this Echo? That was the question that the ninja had. This feeling was very reminiscent of this ability, but no this was not what was occurring. Instead, Keimusho was given a vision of his own past: what happened before he was brought to Zephon. It was almost as if he relieved that scene of his past. The battle against his former mentor and father figure, Fumio Itou specifically stood out.
“Ah… Keimusho, I’d recognize that white hair anywhere. You’re quite different from the thieving little shite you were almost a decade ago.”
“In truth, I intended for you to also join the Garlean Empire, but you ended up finding out my secret a tad bit too early. You would’ve served wonders for the empire. In fact, you could now even more so…”
“Then I’m afraid you’ll have to die then. Tis’ a shame that the Kami didn’t have a better plan in store for you.”
All of these were the words echoing through the Au Ra's mind. All of with came from Fumio before Keimusho had to cut him down. After a while it finally stopped. "No more!", the ninja yelled abruptly. The ninja took a deep breath to regain his composure. "Something isn't right... Perhaps the rumors of illusions are true. Queer things are affecting us and perhaps I may be on the worst end of it all. Either we have to find our way out or find whatever is causing it.", said the ninja.
Keimusho and the old man stared at him as if he’d lost his mind when he lashed out with his sword near them. To be fair, maybe he had, because the masked man confirmed that he hadn’t heard a thing. Of course he hadn’t. There was no possible way that Ultimecia or Rinoa could be in this forest. That would have been the biggest of coincidences. Squall knew that logically, but his breathing still sped up when the cold, dry laugh of the sorceress echoed in his ears.
“Right. Not real.” He touched his forehead and tried to repeat that to himself when Keimusho suddenly gripped the side of his head and went a bit rigid as he stared off into space. Recognizing that he was going through the same thing that Squall had, he quickly tried to usher the old man a step away to put some space between them. Whatever Keimusho had seen must have meant as much to him as the sorceress had to Squall, because he suddenly screamed out for everything to stop before he took a slow breath and stared at them, his red eyes wider than usual.
Squall nodded when Keimusho pointed out that the rumors of illusions in this forest were turning out to be true. “Definitely illusions,” he muttered. “Not sure what you saw, but the woman I heard should be dead.” He may not have seen Ultimecia die exactly, but he’d seen her pass on her powers to Edea, so that was confirmation enough. “She’s also the last person I’d want to see. I’m guessing it’s the same for you?” Normally trading stories and fears with a stranger would have been Squall’s personal hell, but they needed to understand what was going on and what was preying on all of them.
Keimusho was right that they needed a way out—This forest was clearly out for blood between the large monsters and now whatever this was. He glanced forward down the path, but he still couldn’t see anything except trees as far as his view could reach. “You said you’re a…’ninja,’ right?” He asked, hoping he was remembering the right word. All he really knew about them was that Selphie idolized them in media, and while he wouldn’t normally rely on anything Selphie liked, Keimusho had proven himself more than competent.
“You have a lot of techniques I haven’t seen before. Anything you can do to scout ahead or see above the trees?”
Just a thought to see if they were on the right track. If not, then Squall didn’t mind plowing onward. He refused to die here after everything he’d lived through. He’d brute force their way out of this forest if he had to.

Squall would explain to Keimusho the details of his illusions it pretty confirmed his suspicions that these illusions were affecting them differently. "The thing is I didn't just see something or someone. I saw my past, the past I had right before coming to this world and not only that I relived it almost.", said the ninja. This was all to similar to the Echo, except it was not helpful in this scenario. Was what whatever was triggering these illusions were triggering them through Keimusho's Echo. Perhaps it did not matter at all, instead what really mattered was getting out of the forest.
Squall went on to question the ninja on whether he do anything to scout ahead. It was honestly the best question to be asked at this point. If they were going to get out of here they were going to have to rely on one another. However, these circumstances made scouting more of a challenge. "I could scout ahead as I did with the Ochu, but with the technique I used for that purpose, any loss of focus will reveal my position. Something that is prone to happen if I am affected by these illusions once more and the worse of it is that it happens at an inopportune time.. Say near a monster, then I'll be left vulnerable."
"As for scouting above the trees, I have no technique specifically for that purpose. However, I am capable of climbing atop the trees and with precision leaping from tree to tree. The thing is that all three of us need to get out of here, which means that we are left with getting out through conventional means."
Keimusho confirmed that he’d seen people from his past as well, but it sounded like he wasn’t just hearing their voices in the forest, but that he’d actually hallucinated and relived the original events. “Well that’s a bad sign,” Squall muttered, glancing over at the masked ninja. “How long would you say you’ve been in the forest?” If he was being affected worse than Squall or the old man, then Squall wondered if he’d been exposed to the cause of the illusions for longer than the two of them. If that wasn’t it, then something else had to be at play here.
Squall considered the path in front of them as Keimusho explained his abilities. “Fair point,” he acknowledged when the white-haired man pointed out that he’d be left vulnerable if another illusion struck him while he was scouting ahead. Anyway, at the end of the day, the forest path had to lead somewhere, and all three of them needed to escape.
“We go the old-fashioned way then,” he said while he shouldered his gunblade. “That’s more my style anyway.” He’d been involved in a few stealth missions during his time in SeeD, but none of them had gone particularly well. He mostly blamed his teammates for that, especially in the case of assassinating the sorceress when each person had successively messed up their assigned jobs. Still, he had to admit that he was probably responsible for being an inexperienced leader at that point. If the mission failed, then it didn’t matter which SeeD was responsible. They all were.
Starting down the path, Squall kept a more alert eye this time, listening for every snapping twig and rustle of grass. Fighting anything as large as the marlboro or the ochu would be a hassle if one of them was out of commission, so he wanted to be ready to avoid it if possible. Suddenly, the old man darted forward faster than Squall would have thought possible with his bad leg. He was once again swinging his cane through the air, but this time, he was crying out about some large monster. Squall frowned before charging forward to try to stop him from hurting himself. Did that mean the old man had remembered something? Whatever it was, it sounded like he was potentially happier not knowing.
“Hey. You know it’s not real.” Squall closed his fingers around the old man’s wrist to try to stop him swinging his branch, and that was when a chorus of whispers started echoing through his head. Stiffening, Squall released him and stumbled back as familiar voices sprang up all around him.
“Oh what an easy life it must be, just to follow orders.”
“This is great. I have a chicken-wuss and a guy who just reached puberty on my squad.”
“The price for your meddling is death beyond death. I shall send you to a dimension beyond your imagining. There, I will reign, and you will be my slaves for eternity.”
The last whisper made Squall grip his forehead as his breathing sped up a tick. He’d almost forgotten that Ultimecia had said that to him before their final battle with her. But what was Zephon if not a dimension beyond his imagining? Was that what this was? Is that why he’d woken up here?
Before Squall could further reflect on that, there was a roar from a monster up ahead that he couldn’t yet identify or even see. Swearing under his breath, he yanked the gunblade in front of him and hoped that the old man would snap out of it and get back behind them.
“You doing okay?” He called, glancing back at Keimusho. It had suddenly occurred to him that if this bout of visions had been so bad for him and the old man, then his travel partner might not have been doing so well.

Squall asked the ninja the time in which they've been in this forest. "Before we ran in to you, I'd say we've been in here a couple of hours, which makes me question why these illusions are just now of a sudden afflicting us." Keimusho looked as the old man started screaming something about a monster. This led the ninja believe that he was seeing visions of the destruction of the elder's village courtesy of a flying black mage gone mad. It was affecting him so bad that he was charging ahead of him and Squall, perhaps one of the worse things that could happen especially when visions or hallucinations could hit him or Squall at a moment's notice. Luckily, Squall managed to catch him before he can get any further. What followed was sudden heavy breathing from Squall which implied yet another hallucination.
"These illusions are getting out of hand. Perhaps we should make haste." What followed was a roar from a monster, though it was not close enough to be identified. "Preferably avoiding the monsters if possible." Keimusho was not entirely comfortable with the idea of engaging in combat with monsters while they could be struck with illusions at anytime without warning. However, if they had to cross arms with yet another monster then they would have no choice to to dispatch of it as quickly as possible.
Oh but your not going anywhere! Not unless permitted to anyway., a distorted voice called. "An illusion?", Keimusho questioned. This voice was not a result of an illusion, all three of them could hear this voice. This is no illusion, men of living. Not this time. Suddenly a figure appeared before them, a ghost. I was just like you once. A man trying to escape his illusions, his fears. And fail I did. If you are not careful you'll end up the same as I... But I'll tell you what. I'll give you a chance to escape the illusions. A trial perhaps. Keimusho turned his attention to Squall after the ghost offered the group its ultimatum.. "A trial? What do make of this Squall?" The ninja did not know what the course of action to take. He was not sure if they would truly be let go if they completed whatever trial this ghost has planned for them, but did they really have any choice in the matter?
Thankfully, Keimusho looked to be alright behind them, though he seemed concerned about the old man. Squall didn’t blame him—he was already a bit difficult to look after with his hurt leg, but it would probably be even worse if he started remembering whatever tragedy had happened to him. Squall kept a careful eye on the old man, nodding at Keimusho’s suggestion that they hurry onward. “No kidding. Not sure we’re in any position to fight something,” he muttered in agreement when the ninja said that they should avoid whatever monster lay ahead. “Maybe we can double back and go around it through the trees?”
Making sure the two men were both close by in case any of the three of them had another hallucination, Squall started to duck back down the path, but an unfamiliar voice stopped him in his tracks.
“Oh, but you’re not going anywhere! Not unless permitted to anyway…”
Pausing to touch his forehead, Squall briefly reflected that it was odd that he didn’t know this voice. All the other flashes that he’d gotten had been people he’d known using words that had stuck with him. Rinoa. Ultimecia. Seifer. Until this one. Was this a new type of vision? Maybe he was progressing like Keimusho had?
The masked man had visibly jolted at the same time that Squall had, and Squall gave him a sharp look when he wondered aloud if something was an illusion. “You heard that too?” He asked, but his question was wasted as a man flickered into view ahead of them. The figure was so hazy that Squall could practically see the road behind him, and he stepped back as the man started to explain that he was once trapped in this forest like them, but he had failed to escape his own fears. The unspoken sentiment that the man was dead had Squall warily eyeing the figure. He’d had a few small run-ins with ghosts in his own world between the tomb he and his friends had been tested at and the village of Winhill. But those encounters had been brief, and this ghost seemed far more malevolent than they had been.
The man dropped that he was willing to help them stop the illusions if they passed some sort of trial, and Keimusho seemed like he was considering it as he asked Squall for his opinion. The SeeD felt his jaw clench as he weighed their options. “Yeah. Not sure we have much choice except to play his game,” he admitted. They hadn’t had much luck getting out on their own, after all. Still, he wished that he could verify that the man really was a ghost and that this whole thing wasn’t just some kind of trap on people travelling through the forest.
Feeling a spike of anger, Squall lightly tossed his gunblade blade first at the figure, eyebrows furrowing as the sword sailed right through his torso before embedding itself in the grass.
“…Alright. Guess I believe your story.” He half expected to incur the ghost’s wrath for not taking this entirely seriously, but he wasn’t one to rely on people’s words alone. “What sort of trial did you have in mind?” Hopefully between the three of them they’d be able to pull it off. Not that he expected the old man to be much help.

The ghost ignored Squall's attempt of attacking him via tossing his gunblade, he then relishes from Squall's question of the trial that was in store for them. Oh what else but a trial of combat?! You've spent your time here slaying plant life did you not? Oh... but don't allow yourselves to believe you'll be facing similar trends. No... your trial will prove to be more difficult both physically and mentally, but I won't spoil anymore.
"And if we refuse?", asked Keimusho. Keimusho figured that this was an ultimatum but at the same time did not feel that the only escape method was with the ghost's trial.
You are not in a position to bargain scaled-one. You will undergo my trial, whether it is willingly or not. In fact, allow me to show you how futile your attempts of negotiation are. The humanoid figure that the ghost presented himself in shifted to a ball of energy, which then swiftly made its way to the old man. The ghost would enter the old man's body in this form. The old man screamed at the top of his lungs as the ghost slowly took possession of his body.
Keimusho instinctively drew his kodachi, but it was already to late. The old man's body was possessed. Uh uh uh. You'd best put the sword away. You wouldn't want to harm your companion now would you? Now this trial will have two prizes. Your escape and the life of your companion. Keimusho stared in disgusted as he sheathes his blade. Now, now. Don't give me that look. I'll tell you what I'll add in a third prize. I've noticed that this man lacks something that those in the living value so much, memories. If you manage to complete this trial I'll give him just what he is lacking.
The ghost took the old man's body and started to walk away with it. A flash of blinding light followed behind him. When this light dissipated the only trace of the old man was his walking stick. What was next to the stick was a Tonberry. Follow the Tonberry, it shall take you to your trial. The voice of the ghost could still be heard as if it were right next to them yet there was no trace of it or the old man.
The ghost thankfully didn’t seem too offended by his attack as he went on to explain that their trial would be by combat. Squall wasn’t surprised, though he did quirk an eyebrow when the man said that these battles would be both physically and mentally more challenging than their previous encounters. He didn’t like the sound of that, but he doubted they were in much of a position to refuse.
Keimusho bluntly asked what would happen if they refused, and the ghost didn’t seem to take too kindly to that as he immediately disappeared from view and took possession of the old man that they had been traveling with. Stiffening, Squall called a spell to his fingertips since his sword was still across the clearing, but he angrily let the magic dissipate when the ghost threatened their companion through the old man’s mouth.
“Fine,” he muttered in reluctant acceptance as the ghost outlined what they’d receive if they emerged victorious. He tried not to look too enticed by the prospect of the old man getting his memories back, but truth be told, he did want that for him. Amnesia hit far too close to home for Squall to not feel for him. If going along with whatever the insanity in this forest was helped him out, then Squall would do it for him. Not that he’d ever admit that out loud.
As the ghost vanished from their sight along with the old man, Squall recoiled back a bit as a tonberry appeared in their place. He’d never seen one outside of the Centra Ruins or Ultimecia’s Castle before, and they were a tough enemy to beat at the best of times. Eyeing the tiny knife gripped in the creature’s hand, Squall crossed the clearing to retrieve his gunblade from the grass.
“What do you make of this? Think he does this to a lot of travelers?” He muttered to Keimusho as the two started to follow the tonberry off the path and into a thicket of trees. Squall wasn’t too pleased to be leaving the forest trail, but clearly following it wasn’t doing them any good anyway. These woods were already like a maze.
After they had followed the creature for a few minutes, the tonberry disappeared between two tree trunks that were growing close together. Squall held a few branches out of their path with one gloved hand before he ducked down and emerged into a large clearing.
It was odd to find such a wide open space in the middle of the woods, and Squall’s eyes darted between a few rock structures that had strange markings on them to a stain in the grass on one side that looked suspiciously like blood.
“Real welcoming,” he muttered, upon noticing that he’d lost sight of the tonberry. “Think the trial’s already started?” He turned towards Keimusho after asking the question, but he quickly froze upon seeing that the masked man was no longer where Squall had last seen him. In his place stood Ultimecia--her yellow eyes bore into him like an insect, and the slight quirk to her lips was just as Squall remembered it. As if everything going on around her was just an endless source of amusement and of no real consequence.
“Where is he?” Squall demanded, yanking out his gunblade and launching towards her to go on the offensive. Just as he started to bring his sword down in a strike, a flicker of awareness told him that something wasn’t quite right here.
(Since when did the sorceress walk around with a kodachi at her side?)

Whilst in the midst of following the tonberry just as instructed by the ghost, Squall asked the ninja his thoughts on this matter. Whether or not this ghost's actions towards travelers, in this case being them were something of common place. "Who knows? It would be near impossible to know the motivations of the dead. This could just be one of his many games. Though I find this rather strange, I would've thought that fae folk would be more likely to do something like this to travelers since it is a behaviour that I’ve heard was attributed to them, though I was never one to actually encounter them back in my world. Because of this it would prove difficult to speculate further. Even more so when I consider that I know very little of this place as well.",Keimusho responds to Squall.
Finally upon reaching their destination the tonberry disappeared without a trace. The question of whether the trial has started crossed Keimusho’s mind as well. Perhaps the trial has indeed started, but it would be hard to tell without the commentary of the ghost. Well it would seem that something has started as the sounds of Squall’s running behind the ninja were abrupt. “Did you see someth-” The ninja cut himself off as he felt something was amiss. Squall’s gunblade was edging ever closer to striking him. The ninja had practically no time to react at this time, but made an effort to narrowly dodge the strike, though the effort was not entirely successful. The strike from the blade managed to slice a portion of the Au Ra’s right horn off, which was perhaps best case scenario of the strike had to connect any part of the Au Ra’s body. The removal of this part of the Au Ra’s body was not inherently painful nor was it messy as the inside of the horn was hollow, but the ninja would have issues hearing from his right horn as a result. The portion of the horn would land a few feet away from him and Squall. The ninja would quickly move to create distance between Squall and himself.
Keimusho would finally get a good look at Squall after the exchange, except that it didn’t appear to be Squall, but instead Fumio Itou stood in his place. Keimusho instinctually grabbed his kodachi. “You! Your supposed to be dea- Wait no... “ Keimusho remembered that Fumio was not one to use a gunblade. “It’s these damned illusions.”, the ninja said hoping that Squall would be able to hear him assuming that he was also under an illusion again. At that moment the illusion ceased and Squall’s appearance to Keimusho was as it was usually.
“Impressive I must say, I expected you two the fight longer. Congrats on passing your warm up. Now it is time for your real trial.”, the ghost said to the duo. There was still no trace of the ghost or the old man. This exercise wasn’t even part of the actual trial? It seemed that the dead was just toying with them at this point, though it could be argued that they already toyed with since the beginning. Still there was so much at stake here and there was literally no turning back. Keimusho walked over to Squall to ensure that they wouldn’t end up attacking each other again, since he figured that surely whatever the ghost throws at them in this trial will involve illusions in one way or another.
At the last second, Squall realized what Ultimecia’s curious choice in weapon meant. He tried to pull the strike, but it was already too late and he felt the blade connect with something hard as the sorceress ducked away. The movement wasn’t like her, which cemented his belief that this was just an illusion as he backed away. The sorceress stared hard at Squall, grabbing for her kodachi as she shouted that he was supposed to be dead. While the voice was definitely hers, the way of speaking wasn’t, and Squall let out a breath as she seemed to come to the same conclusion that he did. Nothing but an illusion.
Ultimecia’s form melted away to reveal Keimusho again, and Squall glared at the trees as the ghost’s voice mockingly congratulated them on figuring it out so fast. He didn’t want to give the creature any satisfaction by replying directly, so he muttered to Keimusho instead as the man walked over next to him. “He’s just toying with us.” Glancing over at the masked man, he winced slightly as he noticed that the top of the red horn over the man’s right ear had been lopped off. “Damn. Sorry about that.” He awkwardly glanced between him and the piece of horn lying in the grass, hoping that it wouldn’t debilitate him in the upcoming fight. “Will it uh…grow back at least?” He somehow doubted it, and that just made him even more livid at the ghost for making him permanently scar someone he’d teamed up with. Keimusho was no Seifer, after all. He hadn’t deserved that. If Squall had anything to say about it, then their last fight on the way out of here would be that ghost.
“Yeah, guess we should stick close,” he muttered as he moved closer to the center of the clearing. He left it unspoken that it was in case another illusion struck up, but he doubted that he needed to explain that to the ninja. Turning slowly in place, Squall considered the clearing of trees. Everything was quiet, and every passing second grated on his nerves as he waited for the trial to start.
“One condition to passing,” the ghost finally spoke up in a silky tone behind them. Squall whirled around with a spell already at his fingertips, but there was no one in sight. “Leaving the clearing will disqualify you. Think carefully before you leave your partner to fend for himself.”
Raising an eyebrow, Squall glanced at Keimusho to see what he thought but a sudden shaking in the trees ahead of them snapped his attention forward. Judging by the footfalls, something huge was approaching directly in front of them, surrounded by maybe a dozen of something smaller. Squall got into a stance with his blade raised in front of him when a sudden scream echoed in the woods off to their right. Darting his eyes to the side, Squall swore under his breath when he realized the scream had come from just outside the circle of trees.
“What do you think?” he muttered to the ninja, resting his gunblade on his shoulder as he kept his eyes on where creatures were approaching from. “Another trick?”
