Caius listened as Vossler, instead of trying to be rational, prattled on about how they had all made mistakes except him, who's only mistake was following his lead in drawing weapons, before promptly grabbing the basin and drinking. Seeing as Kuja didn't stop him or object whatsoever, before Kuja dropped the nice guy act and they left he and Rem behind, well... It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what was going on. Despite his pain, Caius actually started to laugh. Because why Kuja suddenly cared about getting the basin, suddenly using his magic fully after Vossler went to him, there only being efforts to save the one basin, his eagerness to get the basin to Vossler... And now this ridiculous drivel from the so-called "Knight", it all made sense.
His entire ridiculous rant was the icing on the cake, too. How was it his fault that Vossler had no agency of his own? Caius drew his blade? Vossler drew his blade. Kuja told him to drink? He drank. Vossler was a follower. A puppet. And nothing more. A puppet with one showing of personal agency this entire time, and that was to bitch about his own doings, before doing exactly as he was told by Kuja and following behind him like, well… A puppet.
Caius would have designated him a “lost puppy” but puppies had more agency than Vossler.
Caius felt like he should be mad. He really should be, he knew. Vossler hadn't regarded his well-being or weighed the variables of who should drink whatsoever, just bitched at him and took it because his master told him to. But he was more amused than mad. If he was to be mad at anyone, he knew, it should be at himself for once again being a poor judge of character.
Still, as his last remaining hopes of salvation died, he suddenly felt incredibly sick. His laughing didn't help matters. He laughed, he ejected the contents of his stomach onto the floor and kept laughing. It hurt to laugh, yet for some reason he felt so numb now he didn't care.
But he would have started forward regardless of whether Kuja and Vossler had done so. The moment Vossler had drank, Caius was done with them. He had made the mistake of trusting them, and he would rely on them no longer. If he was to die here, then he would die fighting. He was too stubborn to go back now, and Caius began to slowly make his way toward the gate. He stumbled then, and nearly collided with Rem as he grasped her garb to keep himself up. But as Caius pulled himself up on her, an idea came to him as he watched Vossler and Kuja begin to step through the gate, and he used the opportunity to whisper something into her ear.
Caius needed to rely on Rem for a bit after that to keep walking, but the trio eventually managed to get through the gate. Caius had decided to trust Rem despite her mistakes, for one reason. While she clearly had a poor sense of what to do with her power and how to use it right, how adamant she was about ensuring both he and Vossler were cured had been something he had managed to hear. And it impressed him. She may be inept and need work in a lot of ways, but her strength of character couldn't be denied. That was something that Caius wouldn't forget. He would need to have words with her later, so long as she didn't manage to somehow botch this one up. But Caius' expression had changed, the laughs were gone, as they neared the gate. He was all business once more.
And thus, the battle was to begin.
------------
~Present~
"He will likely be as undead as I. Act on sight. Do not hesitate and neither will I."
That was the words he had whispered to Rem. With how much hell the spell she had cast on him before had inflicted on him... What would it do to the Lich? That was the aforementioned plan he had come up with while Kuja and Rem were busy trying to get the basins, instead of resting as much as he should have been. He didn't know if it would work... But it was worth a shot.
When Vossler was thrown to them, Caius ignored him and stepped over him to continue toward the Lich (At this point, Vossler was even less worthy of acknowledgement than a common bandit). He didn't hear much of the Lich's drivel, on account of not being able to hear very well, but he did manage to see some kind of spell effect Rem and Vordun. Caius had tried to shift himself to stop it from taking Vordun, but there was nothing he could do and the dragon's whines toward Caius indicated that Vordun knew that something was seriously wrong. Caius gritted his teeth as he looked to Rem, his eyes piercing into her expectantly.
It was up to her now.
The moment that she fired the Full Cure on the Lich, Caius didn't hesitate. Knowing that he was at risk of missing, he immediately summoned his gun-daggers and opened fire on the Lich, rapidly shooting both at it without another thought. If the thing was potentially near death now, then Caius needed to act quickly. If it wasn't... Well, hopefully it did some damage.
Caius knew that with his state, his odds of missing were high. But if he fired many at once... Some of them had to hit, right?
Vordun followed up on Caius' lead, launching a large fireball toward the Lich in turn.
Kuja's spell helped bring life back into the Dalmascan. Without it, he would still have been on the cusp of death, with the only difference between now and before being that he was no longer violently vomiting. But Vossler was still heated, even after taking his leave towards the Lich's tomb.
The rest of the walk would remain eventless which was what he needed to clear his mind for the fight ahead. It wouldn't be hard to find the final chamber, as its design was more pronounced than the other mausoleums. A small amount of anxiety had subtly slipped its way into the knight to make his chest beat at a slightly quickened pace. This was it. His time in this hell was almost over.
"Shall we announce ourselves?"
Vossler had no doubt that Kuja would take full advantage their agreement. Yet it was something that the Dalmascan was willing to live with for the sake of not dying over such a foolish mistake. After all, this entire arrangement was his own idea.
"Should this Lich be undead like the others, holy magicks and curatives may become more potent. I'm certain that this is common knowledge in the realm you hail from." With his two cents out of the way, Vossler entered the chamber. The darkness hid the floor well enough for him to not see the bones that completely covered it. This would make movement more difficult for the knight, though he suspected that Kuja would fair much better with his ranged magic.
Death itself seemed to awaited them inside. Ancient murals were carved into the far wall that illuminated itself when the two entered. And after a short moment, Caius and Rem's entrance triggered the final two lights. At last, the Lich chose to show itself.
The fiend assembled itself from the bones on the floor where it easily towered over the party. Before any action could be taken, the Lich blasted the pair of warriors away from each other. Vossler soared through the air and tumbled near his former companions. Then a new hex was put upon him. That familiar sensation of impending doom came to the Dalmascan, one that he had not felt since his battle against the Demon Wall in Raithwall's Tomb. It was just one more obstacle in his way now.
Doom did not drain his strength in the same manner that Sap would have, but there was a gradual increase in anxiety that grew second by second, one that would make most warriors panic if they were not familiar with the status. Luckily for him, Vossler knew that the caster would need to be dispatched quickly before his time ran out.
With Rem and Caius both beginning their assault, Vossler pushed himself up and dashed towards the Lich with his blade drawn. Once he was halfway to the fiend, the Dalmascan skirted off the the side to flank it. He had sustained enough damage from the blast to warrant the use of Balance, which Vossler applied to his blade moments before closing in for a strike.
He may have been selfish with the cure of his previous status, but the experienced Knight-Captain was no fool on the battlefield. And whether or not the others cared for his well being did not matter. This was why they had come to the temple, this was what the journey through the catacombs was for. If he could draw the Lich's attention for even a few moments, it would give Kuja and Rem enough time to land their strongest spells without worrying about receiving the Lich's wrath. His only hope was that this time Rem would not perform a spell that put the entire party at risk. Again.

Peace is but a shadow of death, desperate to forget its painful past.
**And then Fin was an absolute idiot and accidentally overwrote her entire post while replying to the next one. Kuja examined the ruins, got really irritable that the other two showed up, reacted the Lich jerking him around, stayed his hand until the Lich turned on him, and then got really into betraying them. He wanted to help the Lich so that he could ask it about what the hell keeps breaking into his mind so he could find Chaos and kill him. He then cast Flare on Rem after taunting them about it. I'm crying.
I'm Death, I come to take the soul Leave the body and leave it cold
The assault on the Lich came too fast for it to react much. It howled as the Full Cure hit it and it felt the fire from the dragon stripping away at his bone. "Fools." it taunted as it backhanded Vossler as he attacked, causing the knight to fly across the room once more. "To try and save a world not you own. Cower and die." The Lich stomped its foot causing the room to tremble as the earth shook once more. Looking towards the girl it waved its hand, "Remain still" is roared as it cast STOP on the white mage hoping it would connect. Towards the dragon it sent a BLIZZRA to quench the flames and encase the dragon in an icy tomb.
Kuja's spell connected with Rem. Her barriers saved her life and limb but she was toppled over rolling across the floor a little worse for wear. The Lich looked over to Kuja and with of his hand cast HASTE on the mage. "Kill them. Let their bones join me, and their blood nourish his wrath." It needed the mage to act quickly as the curative powers took a toll on its mortal coil.
It was a blessed relief she had thrown out a Shellga, but holy heck, the way that the magic had erupted around her—maybe she should’ve gone ahead and used Reflect first.
But then that would’ve been a mistake, because any and all curative spells would go bouncing off them and target something else instead—which honestly? Was a bad idea! Feeling the barrier tremble, crack, and then finally explode as the force of the pretty man’s magic drove her to her knees, she hissed in pain as she felt the magic licking at her. While there was an attempt to use a charged-up Curaga to heal herself and Vordun, well—there was another spell that had hit her.
Trapping her in that forced kneeling position, her movements frozen as she couldn’t do anything. Oh, no.
Was this how everything was going to come to an end? Only her eyes were capable of registering what was going on around her, frozen in time, unable to move from where she had fallen. Much as she wanted to hurl barbs at the pretty man, she was…stuck, how long did this last again?
No manner of forcing herself could make her stiff limbs move. So she was stuck there, basically, kneeling on the floor in an attempt to stand up and throw another spell. Her gaze wandered to Vordun, hoping that the Ice-type spell didn’t hit him too hard.
Caius. Help! She thought frantically. She knew that he was only capable of Fire, and that he would most likely go and use that to thaw out Vordun first, but—being stuck in this awkward position was terrible. She couldn’t move, couldn’t even break the spell, an attempt to shake it off.
It didn't take a lot, between the sudden spell from another direction and Kuja's taunting, for Caius to figure out what had happened. Now, Caius knew he typically wasn't that good of a judge of character. He had already been wrong once with Vossler today. But when Kuja turned on them, he wasn't exactly shocked beyond belief either. But then again, he also didn't expect him to turn around and side with the Lich of all things either. But he supposed it would explain a lot.
But he had bigger problems. Before she could cast further, the Lich had suddenly stopped Rem in her tracks. Caius knew immediately what was coming from Kuja next most likely, he wasn't stupid and had already seen him use the spell he knew he'd use once. He knew because in one fleeting, spiteful moment he had considered using it on Vossler when he had tried to take the basin himself. But Caius' nature overruled that decision. Something he knew he would probably regret, seeing as Vossler would probably turn and side with the monster as well considering the circumstances.
Caius knew that he had to do two things. Buy time for Rem to return to movement, but also finish the Lich as quickly as possible. Which wouldn't be an easy task in the least, he knew. But if he could take down the Lich, then he would be cured of this condition and could take down Kuja at his full power. If Caius went down trying, well... Without the Lich, he was sure that Rem could take care of it.
The Lich would launch a large icy spell toward Vordun, and Caius saw it quickly. Deciding to begin charging his magic for what he knew he needed to do himself if he was to take the Lich down, Caius fired a command to Vordun.
"Vordun!" Caius called as Vordun, instead of trying to answer it immediately, began to mimic a tactic that Caius had seen from the monster that he presumed had conceived Vordun in his battle with it. His mouth opened as the fire glands in his throat began to heat up. What ensued was a larger fireball (Equivalent to Fira) that launched from his jaws and struck the spell head on, cancelling each other out in an explosion of heat and cold.
Not that Caius had forgotten about Kuja. But he knew that in his condition, dodging what he knew was coming inevitably would be next to impossible. One way or another, Caius knew that he was going down here. That realization hit him like a tank and he glanced down toward Vordun who had flown back to his side. Sad eyes glanced the dragon over, before Caius slowly nodded his head. He knew what needed to be done if victory was to be assured. If he could do as much damage as possible to the Lich before it or Kuja took him out, and held their attention long enough... Perhaps then Rem would be able to escape and finish it off. All he could hope was that Rem would take care of Vordun if he didn't survive this. Or at the least, get him to Celes. Vordun would recognize Celes if they saw her, he was sure Rem would hand him off if need be. For one reason or another, despite everything... He trusted her. Trusted her enough to do what needed to be done if he was to prevent the Lich from doing what it would do if he didn't.
This was his job, after all. Fighting back the darkness. He was a Kingsglaive... No matter what world he was in.
And a Kingsglaive did what had to be done.
Forcing back vomit that had begun to form in his mouth, Caius steeled himself as he drew his sword and took off at a run. His legs felt heavy but adrenaline fueled him as he charged forward toward the Lich. He had initially planned to escape Kuja's magic with what mobility he had left in him, but with Rem stopped, and the advantage heavily in their enemies favor... Caius knew that he needed to bet everything on this.
"FIRA!"
The blade of his sword began to glow as powerful flames began to rise from it. Every step, every movement felt heavy and Caius knew that his second wind was ending. He needed to strike now, and he needed to strike hard.
"VORDUN!"
Caius called to his companion as he began pushing himself as hard as he could go. He knew he was pushing his body beyond its natural limits now in his state, and he knew that he didn't have much longer. With all he had, he launched himself off a piece of rubble circulating upward, bringing himself right into melee range of the Lich just as Vordun would get into position. Vordun unleashed a flamethrower on the Lich, refusing to let up no matter how searing hot the room became. Letting out an ear-piercing roar, Caius brought his sword down on the Lich, keeping himself in the air as long as he could with the Glaive's aerial abilities as he struck one after another, over and over again.
After one last blow with all his strength, Caius kicked off the Lich and threw himself back with his aerial mobility capabilities. But the moment he did, whether from an attack or because he had finally succumbed from pushing his body to its limits, Caius lost his balance in the air and crashed into the ground hard, expelling blood from his mouth as his sword disappeared.
"Fffshhh.... Fsshaaahh..." Caius seethed as he tried over and over to summon his sword again. He had to keep fighting, he told himself, but he knew that he had nothing left. Finally, his eyes drooped closed as his last gasp emitted, and his head dropped to the floor.
It came as no surprise that the battlefield turned so chaotic. After all, a fiend such as the Lich, who was capable of corrupting the land on a large scale, would surely be a formidable enemy. In battle, whoever could control the chaos of the battlefield would be the victor. And at this moment, the Lich was the one in control. The room spun while Vossler recovered from another attack. It was the second time that he was flung across the room, which was becoming a nuisance. The damage sustained was not severe, but the Dalmascan would have to close the distance with the Lich once more. What a tedious task. However, it now seemed that the Lich was not the only one attacking the party. Rem had suffered from a magic attack that did not come from the Lich. "No," Vossler mumbled in shock, seeing the Flare spell strike her hard enough to disrupt the flow of combat. His fears came to life after the Lich turned to Kuja and issued the order to fight against the party. "What are you doing?!" The Vossler shouted towards Kuja, completely surprised by how fast the mage had aligned with the Lich. There was little time for conversation, however, as the Lich still needed to be dealt with. Regardless of Kuja's response, Vossler had to continue his assault on the fiend. Vossler was nearly on the opposite side of the chamber from where Kuja was positioned, which he decided to use that to his advantage. If Kuja had truly intended to side with the Lich and kill the party, then Vossler would have to carefully stay out of the mage's line of sight. Quickly, he rushed the Lich once more, who seemed to have focused on the rest of the party again. With Rem out of the fight at the moment, Vossler needed to apply more pressure to the creature. When he was finally in melee range, the Dalmascan swung three more time, each with a different ability. His first strike was with Expose to reduce the Lich's defensive capabilities. Following the initial blow, Vossler struck a second time with Expose to lower the Lich's strength. The third and final blow for his combo was Balance once more. Having been damaged more from that last attack, his attack would do more harm to his foe than the last time it was used. Having finished his attack, the knight leaped back to avoid another smack. However, he carefully positioned himself to remain out of view from Kuja to avoid any more surprise Flares.

Peace is but a shadow of death, desperate to forget its painful past.
Kuja had seen that same look in their eyes before -- the same shock, the same realization, the same denial. ’What was he doing?’ Laughing for one. The satisfaction could have been a reason all in itself. Perhaps it was in its own quiet way. He might have felt some remorse for the knight if he’d been capable of such things, but the other two…
”I did warn you.”Nothing but idiots.
Kuja didn’t care much for the Lich’s orders. Let their blood nourish his wrath? Why yes, Kuja was quite thrilled to add more rot to the Lich’s hovel. The place was disgusting as it was, and the image of their bones nearly soured his moment. Nearly. Kuja had never been one to let orders ruin what he’d have reveled in on his own.
The girl was rendered useless (wasn’t she always?) while the knight was swatted away like a particularly persistent fly. Only the dragontamer acted quickly. Perhaps he knew that his time was short. Perhaps he’d been expecting it in his own imbecilic way, but as soon as Kuja’s spell landed, he was already moving. His blades blazed with fire as Kuja muttered his incantation. He'd thrown himself forward in a flash of light as Kuja raised his hand. For a moment, Kuja paused, preparing to backstep if those blades came anywhere near him, but no. The idiot had eyes only for the Lich.
His swords landed with a flare of heat followed by the breath of the dragon. Kuja hesitated, scanning for his target again, when he found the swordsman flat on the ground struggling to so much as stand. Well then. It seemed pointless to even bother, but Kuja’s spell was primed and there was no use wasting it. He brought his hand down like an executioner’s axe.
”Cura.”
The magic launched from his fingertips in cool mist unbefitting of its purpose. It was a sweet irony.
Now for the others. The girl was incapacitated but could act as a threat should she rise. The knight was more of a nuisance than a danger, but the Lich had taken enough damage already. Kuja’s eyes crossed with irritation as he readied his magic again.
With the guardian’s magic still sparking through him, his spells came rapidfire. ’Protect.’ That would weaken the knight’s sword. ’Reflect.’ That would take care of the girl. His eyes narrowed on the dishonorable swordsman.
What a shame. And he’d have served as such an adequate pawn.
I'm Death, I come to take the soul Leave the body and leave it cold
The Lich would not last long at this rate, and it knew. They would all die, even the chaos agent. Their decay would spread through the roots of the sacred room and out into the rest of this planet, tainting the water, killing the livestock, and starving the crop. Crushed under the very stone they had journeyed through. The Lich rose its arms calling the last of its strength to its cause. He stamped once, twice, thrice, as the room began to shake and shudder. The debris began to fall first pebbles then into great stones. A rupture in the ground began to invite them all into the maw of the earth, but as the Lich focused in ending all around him, it began to succumb to its one end. It would feel as though a soft hand grabbed at Rem, Caius, and Vossler leading them into the blue light even if they struggled to stay. For Kuja it would feel as though talons clawed into his neck and hurled forcefully into the blinding red light.

"The Lich is once more returned to the earth, but at what cost?" The trio would find them hazily awakening to Cosmos standing over them as they sat in the cool blue ether. Her gaze is cast low, and even in the warmth and softness they feel the cold pang of despair rings through their hearts. "Chaos' fiend was not allowed to lead all the lands into decay, but the temple is nothing more than a den of the dead now." She turned from them as she clasped her hands close to her chest. "Still that means the others must be here too. A cycle unbound by rules. So many chosen based off their hearts not picked by gods." It seemed as though she was lost in her own thoughts now rather than bothered by their presence.
Cosmos turned and waved her hand over them. Vossler and Rem would feel their wounds melt away and something like a hug warm their frames. Caius would see his body slowly regenerate as though pumped with the ichor of Cosmos herself for a moment before the same feeling of comfort and warmth would envelope him too. Cosmos gave them a soft smile as she held out the palm of her hand. "Please allow yourself reprieve. There are other souls that may take charge of aiding this unfamiliar land. Here take this. I'm not what I once was and my power wanes and flows." From her hand three small crystals floated toward the trio and passed through their skins into their hearts. "Let this light keep you from his temptations and those who would act through him. Goodbye my warriors," Cosmos turned again and the blue would begin to fade along with the warmth. The three would awake at the edge of the ruined village

"YOU HAVE FAILED!" The words would hit Kuja like a punch to his temples as he would open his eyes to a horned demonic visage enraptured by flame. Chaos would stare at the man, and Kuja would feel all the hate and damnation as he skin crawled as though on fire. "The world still lives, and you let her warriors escape." Chaos roared viciously and it would feel like a thousand tiny nails being hammered into Kuja's eardrums. "I've still use of you though, so do not let this seem mercy. The other fiends stir now. The Marilith, in her desert temple. The Kraken in the seas depths. And Tiamet still trapped behind the gate you did not prise open enough." Chaos would lift Kuja into the air to face him eye to eye. "Help them rise, or suffer my wrath." Chaos would roar once more and Kuja would feel as though he was violently thrown from the red painful light. Kuja would awaken in the debris of the temple entrance feeling battered and bruised but as though some darkness hung on his frame.
~~
In Chaos born and Chaos infernal
These fiends are ours eternal
Through time and space their malices spread
And in our hearts do we find dread
~
Now in Serentestra they once again find their mortal coil
Their presence tainting our once blessed soil:
~
Fiend of Earth, in ancient temple, it decays the ground in which it lays
Fiend of Fire, in sunstruck sands, it challenges the damned with its six hands
Fiend of Water, on distant isle, it fills the seas with wretched bile
Fiend of Wind, on mount’s highest peak, its visage an omen most bleak
~
The First Fiend has been defeated. The other three stir even now. Thus ends the Fiend of Earth event.
