"Be more specific" He remarked calmly, and left it at that. The conversation turned to what these "Hero Drinks" were and Caius tilted his head a moment. That sounded... Oddly subjective to be something that would be in this world in bulk. Or in the hands of a Tonberry. She said it was ShinRA manufactured... Yet it was here. Something so subjectively manufactured shouldn't really be here. That puzzled him. Did that mean there were others from ShinRA here who had potentially been killed and looted by these Tonberrys? He decided not to say anything. Cissnei could connect the dots herself.
Caius nodded either way, at least understanding what they were for. "I'll keep that in mind" He spoke softly as they then turned to the bits about romance. She said romance was nothing but trouble, she had heard... He tilted his head at that, but nodded his head either way. "I see..." He would respond, unsure of how to take that. Romance was trouble then? Potentially dangerous? That... Wasn't comforting at all.
"Maybe after this, we can talk about one of these dates I keep hearing about. We can find out how much trouble it is then" Caius would joke dryly in turn, the smallest of smiles crossing his face and a bit of mischief glinting in his eye. He really just wanted to see her reaction, but he was kidding around either way. This whole romance thing just seemed so... Ridiculous.
Either way, sooner or later it was time to go. They would walk down winding, neverending, sparsely lit corridors until they came out into a large colosseum, surrounded by gates and higher up bleachers filled to the brim with Tonberrys bloodthirsty for entertainment. Caius' expression had completely changed. There was no warmness or colour left. Only the feelings that came with the threat of death.
As the gates closed behind them, Caius would let both sets of his weapons appear and float around him as he closed his eyes. It was an intimidation tactic, something to strike fear into the Tonberrys and whatever they might send out. The gates would open again and large wolf-like monsters would barrel out, snarling and gnashing their teeth as they rocketed toward them full speed. Caius recognized them as monsters from his own world, as he would grab hold of both of his weapons, one per hand. The longsword styled gunblade in one hand and the double-bladed shortsword styled gunblade in the other. Above, he could hear more gates opening as large flying monsters came raining down, they were cyclops-like monsters with a large set of wings bringing them down toward them.
Caius knew that with the tonberrys watching and possibly joining the fray at anytime, he would need to constantly switch his fighting style just in case...
She could see the confusion of why the Hero drink was here in his expression. She could only return a shrug. She was not sure either. All she knew was that Hero drinks were mass produced and sold to the public. It just meant something from her universe survived over here. Like Denzel and Zack. There were probably more. However, she could not draw conclusions based on one item alone.
However, when he jokingly suggested they talk a date. She stared wide-eyed at him for a moment, her face red, before she waved her hands out in front of her as if his suggest was outrageous. The last “dates” (AKA missions) she went on never ended well for her “boyfriends” (AKA targets). She had no intention of doing any of that ('interrogations') to him. Nor did she think it was what he wanted to talk about. “I…” She found her voice caught in her throat, and she tried again, “You would be better served with someone who is…” What was the word? Capable? Not a monster? “…who has experience in the field, seeing as you are trying to understand romance. Someone who is gentler…” Gentler? Really? That’s the word she used?! She then gave a huff, not aggravated at him. But more aggravated at the lack of words she was finding.
“Let’s... just... fight…” She rubbed the back of her neck. Fighting she understood. Missions she understood. Orders she understood. Romance? Just enough to accomplish missions and what she read in visual novel fantasies. She tried to keep her head down, so he couldn’t see her so flustered.
---- Where Caius felt threat, Cissnei felt her adrenaline pumping. It was a thrill for her. Something to let her know she was alive. However, Caius bared his teeth prior to them exiting. Cissnei simply stood there waiting. The wolves came first, then the wing-ed creatures that she had not seen since…well in ages.
She decided now was the best time to not be overran. She shifted a bit before closing her eyes and bring her hands together. The familiar green wind burst around her, and one could faintly hear the sound of ticking clocks. She opened her eyes, which were glowing a soft white and held her hands out to the wolves. For a moment, they shimmered the same white. When it faded, they appeared to be moving a slower pace, despite giving the same muscular effort. “I’ve slowed them down, but it won’t last.” With that Cissnei bound forward to take out the Ahriman.
She placed a palm over her shuriken, causing flames leap and sizzle off it. She began pelting the Ahriman with sharp attacks with her shuriken, that seemed to always round back to its master. All the while, she kept the Ahriman distracted, ducking and dodging their magic and attacks, for now.
Caius would turn to stare at her a moment, brow quirked. Letting out a sigh, he just shook his head.
“Stop selling yourself short.”
He left it at that for the time being. They had a fight to get to.
------
Despite the adrenaline pumping in his veins, Caius kept as calm as could be, as he would spin both weapons in his hands. He noted the magic glowing in his partner's hands as he tried to take note of what spell she might be casting. Then the sound of ticking clocks came and he knew what had happened. Celes had used the spell back in the haunted mansion, so Cissnei didn't need to tell him twice. He had already begun his sprint before she'd even finished explaining.
The mid-air foes would be a problem, and Caius knew they needed to be taken out first. It would be harder to gain distance from them compared to the wolves, but their window would be small as the wolves were likely faster. Knowing that the Stop spell wouldn't last long, he would toss his original gunblade into the air. Splitting the shortsword apart into daggers, Caius already had them loaded with ammunition as he would open fire on one of the Ahriman's wings, one wing then another. Pelting them with bullets, each wing getting focus from rapid fires shots shooting from the weapon on each respective side, he knew that he needed to take out their flight advantage quickly.
Once he had riddled them enough, he would turn and begin firing on another using the same strategy, deciding to fire as many as he could before he would need to reload, and as he knew that the Slow spell would slow the descent of the first and give him time before they would land and attack again. He kept his breathing calm as he would open fire once more. When the round went empty, Caius would cease his attacks and turn to the third Ahriman who despite their slower pace had just made it to the back of Caius. Caius would toss one of his daggers, impaling it through the eye and tossing the other at one of the wolves as they lunged at him, slowed or not.
The daggers would disappear the moment the Slow spell would be undone.
Taking a deep breath, Caius would bring up a hand just in time to catch his gunblade, and using the opening he had afforded himself would fire toward the first monster the moment it had finally gotten it's bearings after landing. Knowing it would take time to reload the gunblade, he would instead turn toward the second he had riddled with bullets and hold out his free hand.
"Fira."
Scorching flames would shoot from his palm and strike it. Caius had been working on the Fire spell for some time and had managed to finally reach the next level. The mission with Celes before where he'd accidentally used a higher level had given him the idea he needed to train his powers in order to condition them to using higher grade magic . He needed to be able to use magic more before his body gave out, and with it, he had begun to unlock new avenues to his power.
The Tonberrys were actually applauding, something Caius knew was good news for them. But he didn't have time to celebrate, as the wolves would fall upon him while Cissnei was busy distracting the remaining Ahrimen.
Unfortunately for Caius, he did not possess the Phase ability. That was one exclusive to the Chosen King, unfortunately. To offset this handicap, he had begun experimenting with his warping and blipping capabilities, which would come into play as one would bare it's teeth at him. Caius would blip backwards, not phasing or being rendered invincible in any way, but it gave him some speed that was critical during that moment in dodging the attack. As the others fell upon him, he would continue blipping back and forth, focusing the Power of Kings as every attempted bite or claw would be met with Caius being jarred back and forth by his abilities in quick succession. It would buy Cissnei a bit more time to finish off their mid-air opponents...
Cissnei blinked at how fast he was already starting to move. Okay. No need to finish sentences, it seems he had the proper magic experience here. With a shrug, she continued into her own assault on the Ahrimen, making a final dodge to the right from a lightning attack. It seemed that Caius had taken out a decent number before turning to the wolves. Cissnei readied herself for another attack as she finished off yet another Ahriman, as well as plunging her shuriken in some of the now flightless ones.
Her eyes shifted over to the ones still in the air. Its maws dripping and its eyes wildly focusing on her. She aimed her shuriken to tear the wing of one, and is it descended low enough, she bound forward and pushed herself off the ground. Using the falling Ahriman’s head as a form of bounce pad, she pushed herself up to the next one and grabbed by its stubby feet. Holding it tight, she then swings herself that her feet plunge into the eyeball of the third Ahriman behind it. Staggered, the second axe kick to the top of its head causes it to topple to the ground.
The Ahriman whose feet were in her grasp, began trying to shake her off. Growling at it, she took her shuriken and shoved the point into his belly before ripping it forward. It’s death throes became worse and she let go, landing smoothly on the ground again. Her hand outstretched as her shuriken tore from the belly and into her hand, killing the beast.
However, before she could stand to finish out the original Ahriman, she felt a rush of cold hit her. It jolted her to her knees and her teeth chattered. A sense of fatigue washed over her as she could feel death’s breath upon her. Trying to shake off the blurring of her eyes, she saw the green of the audience and then the Ahriman tilted on its side staring at her from the ground. Standing up grimly, she made quick strides to it, trying to shrug back the sluggishness seeping into her muscles. She had not felt this magic since Avalanche…
It riled a fury in her and she stomped the creature out of existence. She felt its magic over he wain and she turned to look back at Caius and the wolves. For a moment, she waivered as she felt the vitality fall back into her muscles and soul. She took a deep breath and bound forward.
He seemed to be toying with the wolves with his odd abilities. Odd, but useful. She used the flames on her shuriken to distract one of the wolf-like creatures. Seemed awfully skinny too. Perhaps they starved it?
The creature lunged at her maw wide, and Cissnei managed to dodge to the side. While she took another jump backwards, she arced her arm and released her shuriken. It struck the dog hard in the shoulder, piercing through its thick skin. The beast let out an angry howl, before turning to pounce on the aggressor. Cissnei rolled away from the pounce, before landing on her toes and knees. She lunged herself forward to take hold of her weapon. She used her weight to shove the weapon not only deeper into its shoulder. Sparks heated the air around Cissnei, as she punched fire from her hand into one eye of the beast. It bucked at the pain, knocking Cissnei to the ground with her weapon wrenched free.
Angry, the creature bared its fangs, shaking off its daze to circle around and pounce on Cissnei. For a horrifying second, it seemed Cissnei was about to get mauled…
But with her shuriken embedded in the ground beside her, she rolled away just as the creature’s chest pierced through one of the shuriken’s tips. The beast then laid still, before turning into motes.
Panting softly, Cissnei stood up and thumbed her cheek and reclaimed her weapon. She turned to help Caius some more, but she saw the gates open yet again. Her eyes widened. “BOMBS!” She shouted at Caius to try to get him to know the gravity of the coming situation. The bombs gave a impish chuckle as the floated along the way.

You know, this would be a hell of a lot easier, he thought, if he had inherited the Phase power from the King too. But he'd tried, he couldn't Phase. He'd been hit in the face by the bag many, many times trying to do it until one of the other Glaives finally told him that he couldn't actually do it. He was disappointed. It always looked so cool! And it would have been so useful practically too! Was it just too much to give them, or what?
Either way, they had a fight on their hands. While Caius had been distracting the wolves in order to take some pressure off of Cissnei, she'd taken the time to take out the rest of the Ahriman creatures. It was just the wolves to go. They could do this, right? But then Caius would hear the gates open and Cissnei had cried out about Bombs.
Damn.
Caius made note of their presence as he made his way toward Cissnei, who had seemed to take some damage. He had an idea, but he would need her help to make the most of it... He would wrap his arms around her, taking deep gulps of air to try and regain his breath as he brought his forehead to hers to ensure she heard him. Normally he'd whisper into the ear, but he was starting to get tired and she'd hear him just fine this way, this was close enough.
"I... I have an idea" He managed out between breaths. "Just trust me on this one" Caius would ask as he would hoist her up, getting back to his feet as he would have her sit on his shoulders. With their differences in size and bulk, she wasn't too heavy for him and wouldn't restrict his movements much. He would hand her the two daggers that compromised the blade "Isp".
"Your precision is good. You can borrow these. They're already loaded. Rapid fire, just pull the triggers. They fire from the tips so don't shoot your eye out. Watch out for recoil" Caius would instruct calmly as he would turn toward their approaching foes. "If you start to lose your balance, lock your legs around my torso, but try not to restrict my arms if you can."
Cissnei's size was a boon to ensuring Caius could move almost at full speed in this state, but her height also posed the risk of her restricting his arms if she needed to hold on. But he supposed if it meant less arm movement, then it was what it was. He had his original gunblade's firing mechanics and his magic to rely on if he really needed to.
"Most importantly, let me know if you start to get sick."
What this meant was that Cissnei would be able to save her stamina by firing at their opponents with his firearms while Caius moved about the field. They would be able to keep on the move this way, and Cissnei would be able to secure free shots while their opponents were struggling to deal with two people on the same tower, one using melee and one using ranged from atop the melee combatant. Caius would immediately summon his gunblade as he would charge forward.
"Also, don't shoot the bombs. Not yet. Trust me on this!"
With these instructions in mind, Caius would let out a war cry as he would bring his blade down on one of the disoriented wolves, seeming to get serious as he would unleash a flurry of attacks on the monster, each blow quicker than the last. It was downed in moments as Caius attacked lightning quick, before he would kick off it during it's last moments and toss his blade toward the next, Warp Striking forward and immediately unleashing another flurry on the next. All throughout, he would watch the Bombs from the corner of his eye, ensuring he knew where they were at all times. They were getting steadily bigger and Caius knew that time was running out. Caius would land and roll to the side, likely making things a bit bumpy for Cissnei as he would barely avoid a bite from one of them. Immediately, he would hold out his blade and fire, the projectile sending the wolf monster flying back into another. Caius would toss the blade, aimed at the wolf's throat, before Warping them forward again and finishing the attack and slashing through the next.
But they had run out of time. The bombs were going to explode soon, and Caius needed to time this right to work. Moving backwards toward the Bombs, he would let the chasing wolves catch up to them before tossing his blade upwards and Warping himself and Cissnei high up. With that, he would shout a command to Cissnei.
"SHOOT THE BOMBS, NOW!"
It would only take a good series of shots to cause them to explode at this stage. If they timed it right, the explosions would wipe out the remaining wolves.
Cissnei’s tunnel-vision on the bombs took over. She was sure she’d have to stall them while Caius dealt with the wolves. She was feeling rather drained at this point. This type of fighting was not her. The magic from the Ahriman and the adrenaline rush from the would was seeping into her bones. She was digging for the final reservoirs of energy and analyzing the bombs in proximity to the scene. She tried to go over in her head the distance they would need to not be blown to smithereens.
But just then Caius was in her field of vision. She did not understand why he had to talk softly in the arena. Perhaps he did not have enough air to shout. A part of her was slightly frustrated at his intrusion into her space and blocking her line of sight on the immediate threat on hand. When he pulled away she would nip at his nose for interrupting her thought process before watching him kneel for her to do a…what was this? Seemed like an odd combat maneuver. But she would not leave him hanging.
She sat on his shoulders, almost feeling like a child going for a ride on their parent. She felt the daggers’ weight press into her palms. She raised a brow at the fact these daggers were also guns. And wasn’t recoil normal? “Alright, dad. I think I can handle myself up here.” She told him, examining the weapons he passed to her. These was not her normal weapons, but they would have to do.
Cissnei pressed herself down onto his shoulders, unsure why he thought this was a better strategy. If they got mauled by a wolf, both would be entangled. Cissnei did her best to lean her weight in a way that complimented his movement. It would not do for either of them to topple. But shooting while not in control of one’s of movement proved a little difficult. She was used to complimenting her weapon by moving in rhythm with it. However, she seemed to hit her marks in the wolves’ meatier mass.
Cissnei watched as she shot one of the wolves point blank between the eyes and tipped the ear of another. They were getting more rabid and angrier that their meals were not so easy. However, when things began to get too bumpy, she decided the ride was no longer necessary. She shifted her weight to stand on his shoulders and kicked off to shoot the bombs.
For a moment, there was a gold aura that lit her body, and soft stars swirled around her. Her sight finally noticed all the bombs’ weak points and her aim and body followed through hitting the marks. She readjusted for each recoil. As she landed on the ground, her aim never faltered. She stood up from her bent position and walked forward a few steps to show she was not backing down.
Then the bombs exploded, and she turned her back to the explosion to protect her face and softer body parts from the shrapnel caused by it. Her glow disappeared at this point.
The explosions wiped the remaining dogs from the arena, as well as a chain reaction to remove the bombs. She looked up to Caius and tossed his weapons back to him. She gave him a small smile and a wink. “Great weapons. I do not think they are for me though.” She let out a heavy sigh to try to catch her breath. She turned back to focus on the enemies gate again to see if more would come.
Cissnei had been an excellent combat partner while Caius was on the move. While her shooting wasn’t the most steady in the world - something Caius couldn’t blame her given her position and the unfamiliarity with his weapons - she got the job done and did a miraculous job considering how much Caius was moving about. It was clear that he had been correct to trust in her abilities for this plan to work. And while Cissnei would eventually kick off him when it came time to shoot the bombs down, signalling that team time had reached it’s end, he still felt that the plan had worked in satisfying fashion. The bombs would explode, clearing out the rest of the wolves and Caius would smirk slightly in turn when the timing went off without a hitch. As the two landed, he would catch the weapons when thrown to him as he would allow them to disappear, sticking his tongue at her in turn at her teasing remarks.
“The plan was to give you time to recuperate your stamina while simultaneously weakening and bringing our opposition to the right place at the right time to carry out the bombing operation. I’d say you did well, weapons not for you or not” He remarked in turn. But they wouldn’t have a chance to celebrate for long. Even if the tonberrys were cheering them on for their escapade, seeming to be even more amused by the team attack that had gotten a “pop” from them in crowd terms when enacted… The bloodshed would not end just yet even if the duo were starting to get tired.
Tonberrys would begin jumping from the stands into the center, and began advancing on them.
Maybe they’d been a bit -too- good at massaging their bloodlust…
“We go non-lethal” Caius would remark toward Cissnei as he would reload his gunblade once more. “Don’t want to risk pissing them off when we’re so close.”
Cissnei shrugged at his explanation, having nothing more to say to it. Her eyes scanned the tonberry crowd. A crowd that seemed to be drawing closer than she wanted. Cissnei drew her brows together and gave a weary sigh. Why were they being so difficult? She could not understand their compulsiveness. No one ever wanted to do things the easy way. She would not show any sign of weakness now. With a soft gesture of her hands, she summoned her magic once more, forming the shimmering blue barrier around her and Caius. The shield would shimmer the soft blue light before fading. “The Hero Drink might be good now.” She murmured to Caius.
However, instead of drawing her weapons, she crossed her arms over her chest. She gave the tonberries a severe glare, before turning to look over at the special box for the Tonberry King himself. She gave a deep inhalation, her chest expanding noticeably with the breath. “This was not part of the deal, your highness.” Her words were loud and boomed over the arena. Her tone was neutral with the edge of severity. This was her icy business manner. “We survived your arena. Now fulfill your end of the bargain, or you will not get your fighters…” She let her words trail, leaving much to be insinuated.
In the back of her mind, she was already plotting how to take out the stadium. Tonberries and all. “If your tonberries want to fight in the arena, then they need to be registered as fighters, seeing as they are not monsters.” Well, they were monsters, but she was trying to use some tact here. Her feet seemed to plant more firmly into the ground, her eyes almost unblinking as she spoke to the king. “…Unless your highness is suggesting they are by allowing them to storm us like monsters. We have no intention of harming your subjects, as suggested, but we cannot guarantee their safety once they have cornered us.”
She knew they were drawing closer, and quickly. But she refused to show that she was threatened by it. She kept her back to them, hoping her gambling would pay off. But she felt like...she had always been a terrible gambler.

The Tonberry King had initially allowed this to go on, understanding the bloodshed of their people. But perhaps they had been short-sighted and hadn't really realized it until Cissnei spoke up. While originally planning to let them have a go anyway, her words seemed to give the crowned Tonberry pause. Odds were that planning was never their strong suit, they were monsters after all. Lording over bloodthirsty beasts.
“You think you are in a position to bargain?”
But he was still in the business of keeping his Tonberrys alive. Having already seen them fight, the Tonberry King knew he would be needlessly risking people to feed their bloodlust, and potentially risk losing out on later entertainment. Not that they had considered that until Cissnei had brought it up, but nonetheless…
The Tonberry King spoke something in their language and the Tonberrys would stop and begin to return to the audience. It appeared that Cissnei’s gamble had paid off, and Caius — who had been holding his breath throughout the exchange — would finally let out an exhale in relief. Potentially killing them, even if by accident, could have caused issues when it came to their deal.
“My people hunger for just a bit more it seems before we send you out” The Tonberry King would decide in it’s calm, gruff tone of voice. It at least seemed aware, Caius noted, that the Tomberrys would not be able to be contained in the state they were in now. They needed to sort this out before they made their exit.
“We… Do have one more monster that is saved for special occasions. One that has yet to have been tested. Very well then! If you can take down this last monster, our deal will commence!”
The Tomberrys would act on their King’s order, beginning to pull the ropes to open one more gate. Caius would draw his blade in readiness, taking Cissnei’s advice and downing this “Hero Drink” in turn. But his eyes would widen when he saw what stormed through that gate. The Malboro was a massive mess of large vines, and one massive gaping maw. Caius prepared for it to attack…
What he didn’t expect was where.
The “untested” Malboro would lash out, destroying a section of the colusseum, taking many audience members with it. Many Tonberry would swarm the monster to retaliate but would be tossed aside by its vines and would be forced to retreat when it launched its toxic breath. As it began to slink outside the colosseum, Caius would begin to give chase.
“Cissnei, if that thing damages those foundation pillars enough, we’re all dead” He would point out. He had seen them earlier when thinking up strategies for if this didn’t work out. Ironic he would now have to be protecting them. “We need to stop it quickly."
Bargain? Maybe the Tonberry King did not realize it, but Cissnei was not under his thrall. Just like he could change his mind, she could turn on him. This has only gone on because she tolerated it. However, she would not be disrespected. A dark shadow crossed over her face as he spoke. It was beginning to be difficult to accommodate this infestation. She held her tongue at his question, seething. There was one thing Turks did not tolerate well, and it was ceding their control to another who was not their master.
Very good. He was bending to her will. Mostly anyway. She only gave the briefest of glances to see the creatures recede back into the stands. However, no satisfaction showed on her face. The King was quick to show may have won the last few rounds, but not the war with him. She turned from the King to look at the additional nonsense to test her patience. Cissnei was not a full of fighter and forcing her into these battles just showed how barbaric these tonberries were. She would much rather talk her way out of a situation than fight.
She turned to face the gate that fell with a metallic clink. She felt the foundation rumble as it began to lash out without discrimination. “I don’t know, Caius.” She murmured softly to him, “Our mission was to eliminate the threat. If they eliminate themselves, I think we can just slip out of town. We could spend our time looking for a better escape route, now that we have distraction…”
Caius’s thinking seemed straight forward compared to her’s. If the king wanted to kill his own people to display his power against Caius and her, what did it matter to her? Monsters will eat their own to prove themselves. She studied the creature as it thrashed and tossed tonberries. As the overgrown weed lashed out at the columns.
On the other hand, if she stopped the threat on its people, maybe the King will be more obliged to indulge them. She crossed her arms in thought for a moment. “I mean…technically it left the Colosseum. We won the fight by default.”
However, Caius seemed very interested in the fight. She studied him for a moment and gave a sigh. “Very well. We will need to draw its attention to us.” She began rifling through her backpack again but remembered the grenade on her hip. “I could probably chuck this in his mouth. Should give him enough of an ache to turn to us.” She patted the small weapon on her hip.
