This night just kept getting worse.
The demon was tough, that was for sure, and more than a little reliant on sneaking past their defenses. Celes was too busy throwing Esunas to do more than watch in horror as it approached Prompto, creeping up towards him and then…kissing him? Celes stared at it, mouth agape as it fell back into position. What madness had they gotten themselves into?
She felt weak. Celes stumbled, wondering at the sudden shift as her body went cold, shivering as a warm wind left her and gathered at the woman’s chest. Celes grit her teeth, bracing herself against it as the woman’s form darkened again. This time, she was ready, already preparing her runic blade for the spell she knew was to come.
Her sword was unaffected, even as magic welled in the air. Celes stared at in wonder. Had it finally broken? Had she made a mistake? And then a rush of cold wind overtook them, pelting them with ice and a deluge of water that drenched her to the skin. She let out a yelp of surprise and raised her arms protectively over herself as the ice sliced through her. Why hadn’t runic worked? It must have been the spell. The spell must have somehow overridden her defenses. As soon as it was done, Celes gave the demon a sharp look and shoved her hands together.
Two could play at this game.
She muttered her words, felt the chill rise in her, and shouted, ”Blizzaga!”, overtaking the creature in a sharp glacier of ice. At first, she thought that the magic that welled in the air was only her own, but no. There was a sharp crack, a flash of light, and electricity bolted past her ear.
While she’d been too busy casting, she’d missed its next spell. How was it so fast?
She followed the bolt in horror, eyes wide. It was headed straight towards Caius. She had only a moment to yell a warning at him before it would hit.
Why had she been so careless? She readied her hands for a cure if he should need it and prayed to the gods she didn’t believe in that he’d make it through this unscathed.
The demon thing would advance toward Prompto, getting a bit too close for comfort to say the least. The thing leaned in closer... Closer...
Closer...
KABOOM!
Caius had reloaded his gunblade and fired a shotgun-like blast at the creature from close range without any warning whatsoever. His expression was cold and all business, except for that deep scowl that had begun to protrude across his features. The icy stare being stabbed through the creature as if looks could pierce, Caius spoke up.
"My apologies for interrupting the tender moment but I have a job to do, and King or no King, this kid's part of the retinue... He counts."
His brows deepened even further.
"Hands off, bitch."
Despite going for the head though, it hit the arm instead and not only did it not seem to do much to the creature, but the impact caused it to radiate something that began to sap their life. Caius felt cold, and could feel his energy slowly ebbing away as the demon seemed to heal itself with it. Thinking on the circumstances that could bring such an instant attack right at that moment, Caius kept his calm despite his knees shaking and threatening to buckle. The demon then began to turn back to their actual demon form, and started launching spells again. Tired of sitting still and letting it have at them, Caius would toss Lonoaw forward as he would disappear with the Warp Strike, promptly dodging the first spell. Celes' Blizzard spell would shoot just below him as he re-appeared, aiming toward them. But Caius after just warping hadn't been able to prepare for the electric shot that rocketed toward him, hitting the Glaive dead on. It stopped his momentum, as he was sent flying back. His glaive jacket was able to insulate a good deal of the electricity and take some of the damage, but he'd still taken it point blank and felt himself jolting, fidgeting and twitching even when the initial attack had stopped. Letting out a pained breath as he tried to tough it out, Caius would rush forward again and leap toward the creature, using the Power Of Kings' air control to blip himself just over their head as he then went for a series of slashes in quick succession from behind.
The demon screeched as Prompto's blinding flare hit it full on in the face. It scratched at it eyes and backpedaled towards her frame in a fury. It was then hit by the icy cool spell causing it to freeze in the moment. It had no choice but to stand there blind, frozen, as Caius' attacks slashed against its back. The effects of the blizzard spell wore off, and the creature floated away forward still greatly blinded by the blast to the face. Its form changed rapidly at that point. Woman. Demon. Woman. Demon. Quickly in its confusion on what was happening. It warbled between beautiful melody and nails on chalkboard as it tried luring them in although, badly damaged. The creature converged all its energy into a final maelstrom of water and ice as its forms flickered in a slowing pattern.
Prompto took the distraction as a time to reload his gun, albeit weakly and a tad bit slower than usual but his plan had worked. Celes managed to freeze it in place, giving Caius enough time to close in and unleash his wrath upon the demon lady. The creature's form flickered between a demon and woman, but Prompto was not going to get fooled twice.
Making sure to keep a distance, he began firing but when he saw her forming a glacial whirlpool, he turned to Celes before shifting his gaze to Caius once more.
"Celes, we need a shield spell! Think it's spent but the blinding effect hasn't worn out yet," Prompto barked out and when he turned back to Caius. "Finish it! We'll distract her!"

Caius was hit, just as she’d feared he would be. The electricity bolted into him, throwing him back against the wall where he twitched and groaned at the floor. Celes watched in horror, already preparing a cure spell as Caius struggled to his feet, ready to take on the demon once more. She hated seeing him limp, seeing the clear singes on his coat and the pained grimaces he gave, but there were more important matters at hand. She’d failed to protect them once, she needed to stay on guard for another attack.
Even still, she itched for a more proactive role. She was a fighter, not a healer, at heart, and while she was more than adept at both, just standing there waiting for the demon to move went against every instinct she had. Caius disappeared in a flash of light, reappearing with his sword plunged into the terrible woman in front of them. Slowed by Celes’ magic, his blade landed directly in the demon’s back and it screeched its pain and rage. Celes took a step back, ready to intercept whatever came next. Nothing ever died quietly.
The apparition flickered in front of them like a broken projector -- confused, stuttering, and brimming with fury. Gunshots fired into the chaos, punching through the illusions with every blow. Static crackled from the creature around the edges, its outline fuzzy and volatile, before that energy burst from it in a rush of ice and wind. Prompto cried out for her assistance, but Celes was already muttering her spells.
Shell. Shell. Shell.
They came quickly, first to Prompto then to Caius then to herself as the ice rushed forward to meet them. Celes steeled herself again it, shivering as the frost bit her flesh until her own spell was finished and the magic around her weakened. Celes squinted through the self-contained storm, listening as the wind howled through her ears like a wind tunnel. She could make out movement, another flash of light.
They’d all done their parts. It was up to Caius now.
Caius had finally begun properly hitting this thing and once he started, he didn't stop. At least not until the monster would turn back. This time, Caius was ready for it, as he would throw his sword back to warp away from the monster. As Caius flew through the air, the monster would begin blipping back and forth between forms once it had been hit first by Prompto's flare, and then the strong Blizzaga from Celes, which knowing her magical prowess had done substantial damage. But the creature wasn't down just yet, though it was clear that it was on it's final legs. Prompto and Celes had opened fire on the monster, doing their best to draw it's attention as Prompto would call for Caius to finish it off. His ears were still ringing and his hearing was a bit impaired after getting zapped earlier, but the twitching Caius at least heard that.
The monster would begin to conjure up a flurry of wind and water, and Caius knew that it was it's last stand. Caius would kick off the wall and use the Glaives' air control to slash through it's back once more, nailing several more slashes as he narrowly kept himself from being hit by it's charging attack. He knew that if he were to finish it off, he would have to hit it dead on... Which meant... Well... Nobody said this would be easy.
Caius would drop down, kicking his feet upon landing from the table to score another shot at the creature as he would then toss his blades upwards. He needed to build speed, he needed to build momentum... He needed to get in one last good shot...
Warping high up, Caius would catch his sword and dagger and plant his feet on the ceiling. Slamming his feet and pumping his legs, Caius would rocket himself forward. Charging every inch of magic that he had left into both blades, his sword and dagger would each begin to crackle with electricity. Having charged them with everything he had left, the crackling was vast, wild and unruly. Caius found himself flinching a few times as he would feel their effects for himself. But he would push that out of his mind as he rocketed full speed down toward the creature, crossing his blades.
Caius let out a scream, a roaring war cry at the top of his lungs as he would put everything he had into the final blow, aiming for the creature's throat as he would attack with a cross slash using both blades. At the same time, he rammed into the creature, taking the blunt of the attack it had been preparing in the process. Caius would go down like a ton of bricks after the attack, dropping both blades as he hit the ground hard. The impact against hard stone left him gasping for air as he crumpled in a heap, his breaths coming out in pained coughs.
The demon continued it's assault even as it flickered to and fro in form. Then it's throat was slashed was by Caius' blade. The thing choked and gurgled as it tried to breathe grasping at its throat. It finally reverted one last time to the beautiful woman. She looked at her attacker, one hand still clutched to the fatal wound, the other reaching out as if asking for help, her eyes full of sorrow and pain. A light began to radiate from her and a glass shattering scream followed as the creature was enveloped in the light. The sound of the now blank portrait tearing was followed by a crash as the frame fell from the wall crashing on the floor. The echo was the last that the trio would hear from the demon now vanquished.
The room remained silent. However, behind where the portrait has been hung was a opening that lead to an ascending staircase. Following that up and out, the trio would find themselves escaping the house through a trap door near the front door of the manor. that had been covered with foliageand darkness. The first faint rays of dawn would be sneaking up the skyline.
"Oh my word," a gruff voice would call from near the door. A man stood there his hand grasped at his chest visibly shaken by their emergence. "Thought you were ghosts coming to get me! That's what I get for believing in fairy tales I guess. Still yous not the same lot I let into the house last night." He gave them a curious tentative look before shrugging. "I was supposed to bring more, guess yous the lot that didn't show up on time. Can't stop you outsiders from meddling no matter what. Did you get a good spook?" He tutted. "I've come to fetch the others if they still live. There should still be enough room for you lot, what the?" the man started but as he spoke the windows all filled with a white light before vanishing as fast as it had come. "Ugh, I'ma just poke my head in and holler for them, not gonna involve myself in nothing that's not my business. Go to the cart and wait."
