Caius wasn't listening to Celes as the man spoke, though if he weren’t so taken with all of this, he would have probably laughed when she said she wasn’t very fond of him right now. Perhaps he was perplexed to hear this story from a man that was clearly from his world and knew him? Perhaps he thought the man knew something about Caius' family that he didn't know himself? Well, Caius did get his answer. A lot of answers, actually. It was probably the one thing keeping him from killing him until he decided the time was right. But Caius remained stone-faced even as his brother's defiled corpse would charge at them, wielding a greatsword as it charged from behind the horde of undead.
Caius wasn’t answering either the puppetmaster or Celes as he would charge forward and slash to the side against one of the demons. With their bodies less stable than a human one, he was able to slash through them quickly, their bodies crumbling far easier when cut through. The problem was their seeming inability to feel pain, and their numbers… And the screams that they cried out.
The necromancer would be stopped mid-monologue by Celes’ attack. Frozen for a moment, he would seem to take damage when the ice shattered but a dark aura that had begun floating around him when he was trapped would indicate he’d managed to use magic to block some of the blow. He was powerful… But he winced and recoiled like a man. He protected himself like a mortal.
Which meant he wasn’t invincible. He could be beat.
But he kept talking.
“Ah, ah, ah... Interrupting again. Caius, how you influence your friends. Or is this one special to you? She would make quite the addition to my collection if she means that much to you... I could preserve her forever, just as I have your brother... And you'd never fear losing her.”
Caius let out a low groan. He seemed to have hoped that Celes’ attack would shut him up just as much as Celes would hope that it had.
“But make no mistake… That is the real and true Elvioas Dragelion! Oh, what a warrior he was! So much potential but struck down in his prime! Sure he’s a little bit rugged, a little blackened… But I think he can make a comeback, don’t you?”
Caius wanted to believe he was lying. But the moment he would charge forward and cross blades with the undead general… He knew something was different about this one. The body was cold, it moved like it was one of the demons, but still had something to it… A spark to it, an animatedness to it that the others didn’t. And he looked so real... Aside from the way his body seemed to be almost rotted, the black marks, the black goop across one side... He was almost completely human. So human it was terrifying.
It was becoming more and more likely to him that this monster could be telling the truth.
Caius recoiled a bit at this realization and nearly paid for it as he narrowly would duck a slash that would have taken his head off.
“You killed him!” The demon in front of him suddenly screamed in a cry filled with rage and pain. Caius’ eyes widened and he would back away, not wanting to be anywhere near it. "What the fuck..." Escaped Caius' mouth in a hushed whisper. He wanted to believe this was just something meant to resemble his brother as Celes had said. But he didn’t know... He didn’t remember well enough to know. While Caius resumed that stoned look, one look into his eyes told that this entire thing was bothering him. The truth of the matter was that for the first time in years, Caius was terrified. Terrified of what he saw in front of him... And terrified of the possibilities. He was scared, bewildered, confused... He didn't know what to do, but he knew that if he let it show... Well, he knew how important morale was. If he let that fall, he risked getting Celes killed. He couldn't let that happen... Even if he had to keep it hidden and shoulder that burden alone. But while he continued to fight with a steeled expression, the fact he had barely said a word to Celes or their tormentor spoke volumes. Silence was golden…
The hordes continued to attack, and Caius would jump back into the fray to join Celes. Wanting to give her time to begin firing her spells, and noting their tormentor seemed content to just watch for the time being… Caius would slash toward one, gutting their chest before turning and gutting the behind him by surprise. Quick and precise slashes would topple the bodies of the demon's weaker foundationns at their areas vital for keeping their bodies intact.
Caius would then turn and launch a Fire spell through Lonoaw, the shotgun-like blast having a bit more wide range at close distance and hitting several of the demons and setting them aflame. The chaos caused others to back away, giving Caius and Celes some breathing room. Caius continued cutting through the monsters that came near, doing his best to clear more room for Celes to fire. Her spells were more powerful than his, she would be far more effective against the horde than he would be.
Caius’ instincts seemed to alert him though, as he would turn in time to see the demon general that had the face of his brother having charged forward and was aiming an overhand slash toward Celes. And with that, he finally spoke out.
“Celes!” He called out in warning as the direction he was looking might alert her to where an attack was coming.
His "blood brother" did not seem to fear fire as the others did.

Use your own eyes and see for yourself whose side I'm on!
Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
The man recoiled at her magic. He winced and stumbled and that was enough for her. She slashed at one of the strange “demons” that swarmed them in droves, driving her sword in to them far easier than the zombies above. She only needed an instant -- just one opening and she’d cast again!
”Caius, how you influence your friends. Or is this one special to you? She would make quite the addition to my collection if she means that much to you. I could preserve her forever, just as I have your brother. And you'd never fear losing her.”
”Excuse me?” Celes stabbed a demon in the chest, wincing as some kind of acidic smoke burst out and she planted her boot in its flesh to wrench her blade free. ”We. Are not. That. Close!” She whipped herself around, pushing back another one behind her with a swing of her sword. The magic in her blood prickled goose bumps at the back of her neck, and the chills that washed over her were more than ready for release. Anything to shut up this self-obsessed moron with his ridiculous claims about her own relationships.
Why was it assumed that she was only a romantic pawn in another man’s story? She’d heard more than enough from him.
Caius crossed blades with the horrifying sludge man as Celes did her best to overcome the hordes. She needed one spell -- just one spell -- to shut that man’s pretentious mouth forever, but there were too many of the little imps to break her way through. She needed someone to cover her if she wanted to use magic, and with Caius otherwise occupied, she didn’t have much of a choice but to force back the swarm the best she could. Still, she kept her runic blade at the ready in case the demon master tried anything. ’Just try to sling your magic at me,’ Celes goaded him quietly. ’I dare you.’
“Celes!”
Celes was halfway through a swing of her sword when she heard Caius’ warning. She knew it instantly for what it was, and without thinking she ducked down, spinning on her heel as she went as she raised her blade in front of her. There was an awful metallic clink as her sword caught the blade of the corrupted abomination before her. Her elbows nearly gave at the force and she stumbled back, wincing half from the force and half from the sight of the creature up close. His one open eye was dead and swelling with black tar. His face was ghastly and veined like a corpse in water and the other half…
The darkness seemed to pulsate as it slowly consumed him.
She didn’t think to call out. No, even off balance, she could handle this alone. Celes brought her blade up instinctively, catching another blow though she was ready for it this time. As soon as their swords connected, she slipped to the side, allowing it to crash painfully into her pauldron as she swung her good arm and thrust the blade through its back up to the hilt. More of that awful noxious gas released, but the creature barely hesitated. No, it hardly seemed to notice as it turned to face her again. Celes’ eyes widened as she pulled at her sword, but it was too entrenched and too slippery with whatever was oozing off of it to get a decent grip. She let it slide from her fingers as she saw that sword coming again, choosing to duck rather than waste the time to retrieve it. She threaded her fingers together as she fell back, already muttering a spell she knew she wouldn’t have time for.
’Caius now!’ She didn’t have the breath for her plea, but she hoped he’d get the message regardless. She needed a distraction, just the briefest of reprieves, and her magic would tear it apart in an instant. Her incantations came as quickly as she could, muttering and drawing on her power as the sword readied itself again.
Life or death, it would all come down to how well they worked together.
Left, right, swipe, parry... And then he'd been pushed past. Caius had yelled a warning out to Celes, and she had managed to hear him quickly enough to duck down and bring her blade up to block the blow. But no matter what she did, it didn't seem to be able to bring down the beast. No matter how hard she hit, no matter how hard she pushed, she didn't seem able to push past it. Caius had been unable to get past it either, and had been just barely blocking blows himself. This creature, whatever or whoever it was... They were strong. They were fast. In life they had been fierce... And who knows how strong they had become now as a daemon.
Caius tried hard not to remember the years spent fighting the daemons all around them, but the more that they swarmed, the harder it was to forget. Swords and hands were flying everywhere from the hordes, as Caius would cut through one another another in an attempt to get to Celes. As good as she was, he knew that they needed to do this together with that general on the field. If they did not - neither of them would survive.
As Celes backed up, she would call out to Caius. He had to get there quickly, he had to buy her some time...
Caius would desperately toss Lonoaw forward, finding himself warping through the air. He wasn't going to be able to get Lonoaw up in time to protect himself or Celes... But he had to do something... He had to... He had to...
The blade came down on Caius and Celes, after Caius had warped in front of her, but it had stopped.
Caius had found himself holding his hands out, desperately trying to find some way to block and had closed his eyes. When he opened them, though... A red barrier had erected itself in front of them, stopping the blow. Caius blinked a few times in confusion, wondering who had put the barrier up. But in that moment, he realized it was his own energy that was trickling away by the second as the barrier remained up. He didn't know how he managed to get the barrier up, he had never used this before... But he had a feeling it had to do with the Power Of Kings. Either way, Caius would pull the barrier down as the daemon would bring it's blade up again. Caius would draw Lonoaw again and slash downward, striking it's side and stunning it.
"GO!"
Caius would toss the blade over the creature's head and disappear, in time for Celes to cast Blizzaga on the daemon. Stunned, the daemon would be unable to stop the spell, and was completely consumed by it, as were the daemon infantry. In the aftermath, all that stood now was the daemon in the shape of Caius' brother... Covered from head to toe in ice. Not moving, still barely alive in some respect, but Celes' spell had taken it out of commission. Shivering wildly just from being in proximity to the aftermath of the Blizzaga, Caius would slowly make his way over... He knew what he had to do now. This creature, that took the form of his brother... It was pretty much dead now. It couldn't move anymore. Any functions that had been reanimated had likely been completely destroyed by Celes' spell. And even without... It wasn't living anymore. Just suffering. The least he could do was finish this. Give it mercy.
Caius would drive his blade through the daemon's torso, striking it's vitals. As it let out a cry in agonizing pain, Caius would hope that would be it.
But it seemed that wasn't enough. It needed one more push...
Caius knew what he needed to do. His finger would move to the trigger on Lonoaw. This would end it for good. But for whatever reason, he couldn't do it. He couldn't pull the trigger. Something held him back as he hesitated with his fingers hovering just over the trigger.
Finally, Caius closed his eyes... Gritted his teeth...
And a shot rang out.
Opening his eyes, the daemon would fall to it's knees. Staring up at him, it reached up as if to try and touch him. It's expression had softened, something Caius didn't think it was capable of... And then it spoke.
"Caius... You're Caius..." The daemon managed out as he tried to reach upwards toward his face. "You've grown up... You've... You've...
You've made me proud..."
Their hand fell, and the daemon would collapse. The effects of Blizzaga would finally take their toll as Caius had taken what was left of it's strength. The daemon's body began to disappear, sinking into a puddle of the black sludge, as the red orb from before would leave the body and promptly disappear.
Caius just stared at the puddle of black sludge. He had seen that face. Or something resembling that face. He knew that voice. Memories he didn't know he had flooded back, and it was there that Caius knew...
The man hadn't been lying. Every word had been the truth. And he had just killed what was left of his blood brother.
Caius closed his eyes, he didn't know how to describe how he was feeling right now. He'd spent a year wondering what his family had been like... Wishing he could have met them... And now he had but... Not like this. Never like this.
His hands balled into fists as he felt his body trembling uncontrollably. This was a nightmare he wanted to wake up from. He didn't understand what he was feeling, these were things he hadn't felt in a long time... Things he had long repressed into the pit of his being... They felt unfamiliar. They felt alien. They felt... Terrifying.
Caius would wince and grit his teeth again when the mage would begin to clap for them.
"Oh, bravo! Bravo! You cold-hearted soul! Killing your own flesh and blood, Caius! I knew that you had it in you, good show! You're no different from your dear father, after all! Oh, here I was starting to think this wouldn't be a good show! But bravo! You proved me wrong, Caius! And to you, missy! Destroying every function my general had with your spells, rendering him no better than dead but still able to feel it all! Oh, how cold! As cold and as sharp as your heart!" The man would crow with all of the excitement and glee he could muster.
"But ah, ah, ah... It's not over yet."

Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
The blade never struck her. Celes couldn’t stop her spells to question as to why -- only that Caius was there in front of her and that some kind of magic had repelled both the sludge man and the imps surrounding them. Celes didn’t have time for relief. She brought her magic forth, ready for release, ready for destruction as Caius shouted her final command and disappeared in a flash of light.
”Blizzaga!” The spell burst from her in an explosion of ice that sucked the very life out of the air around them. Celes stumbled back at the force of her own magic, suppressing a shiver even as her blood cooled. She’d used too much magic. She felt it waning from her by the second, and yet, she had no regrets. The results were truly a marvel to behold. The smaller demons let out a few final cries as they were overcome by hypothermia and fell stiff to the ground. They seemed to dissolve there in death, falling back into the same noxious gas and black sludge that covered the undead monstrosity before them. Said monstrosity struggled against the spell, but ultimate succumbed in a block of ice that left it barely able to move. Caius approached it hesitantly, blade in hand. He looked pained as he finally drove his sword into it, pulling the trigger on his gun, and ending its life. Finally, after what must have been ages, the darkness consumed that man and he collapsed like the others into a polluted puddle.
Celes took a long breath, steadying herself as she started towards Caius. Her sword rested in the middle of that dark puddle, and she reached through the slime to free it, grimacing as it stickied her hands. She wished she had a water spell to clean it, but even then, that would be a waste of magic when she was already running low on power to begin with.
And then the demon master started clapping.
Celes’ jaw clenched at the first “Bravo.” Here they were, having handily wiped out the man’s entire force of monsters, and still he acted like he was on a stage. ’Oh yes! Getting absolutely destroyed by you was only part of my master plan! Once you’ve kicked my ass, it will only be I who has truly won!
"But ah, ah, ah... It's not over yet."
”Oh shut it already!” Celes charged the stage, sword in hand even with how disgusting it was. The man had a staff. He was unlikely to suddenly wield a sword in hand, and even if he pulled a dagger, would that really stand a chance against her? No, put on the spot, he’d have no choice but to use magic, and if he did…
’Just try me!’ She goaded silently. ’You know you want to! Just try casting and you’ll see how cold I can be!’
If he didn’t use magic then she supposed she’d just stab him. Either way worked for her, and as she barreled up the dais the man was standing on, the time to decide was quickly running out.

Suppose this world isn't so terra-ble.
Celes Chere Word Count: OOC: Caius' world is coming down, coming down, coming down... Dialogue Color: 196fd1 Party Sprites Credit
Caius was shaken. That was clear, as much as the Glaive tried to hide it. But as Celes would charge the man, he would snap back to attention from his thoughts and slowly make his way from behind her. But neither reached him, and yet not because he would attack. Instead, he would hold out his staff, and more daemons would begin appearing to stop them. This time, they held blades of their own instead of being unarmed. It seemed these were ones that their foe had taken long ago which would explain why they were armed compared to what seemed to be the newer, fresher meat in the cages. The horde this time was far smaller than the one before, it likely wouldn't even take the both of them to take them out. Together, it would only be a few minutes.
"Get the girl."
Just the girl? Caius' eyes widened as he started to quicken his pace when they began to charge Celes before she could reach their master. While he didn't doubt her capabilities, with these numbers she'd still have a hard time as primarily a spellcaster... Especially when she was clearly already tired.
"Caius, Caius, why the rush?" The man would speak out. "You're so eager to rush to her side. Are you insinuating that your lady friend can't handle herself on her own? Oh, how trite... All this time you haven't thought enough of her to not coddle her so. But don't worry, my lady friend... I haven't forgotten about you. Celes, he said your name was? Don't think I don't know a thing about you. You see, my family - the ones you oh so heartlessly just slaughtered - have the capacity to see, and hear and remember... I've known about your little escapades for a little while, the two of you. How could I not have found a thing or two out about you, after you've spent so long travelling with the one I've been hunting? How would you like to live forever, Celes? How would you like to dodge death, just as my friends have?
I suppose if you're not willing to take my gift though... I might offer it to your friend. The green-haired one. Rydia, yes?"
If not for how he was feeling right now, Caius would have probably burst into howling laughter over his joke causing this case of mistaken identity. But that silence was the biggest storyteller of all.
"As for you, Caius... I suppose that wasn't much of a reunion, I'll admit... Seeing as you barely recognized your dear brother. Luckily for you, I have another gift for you. You see, it might have taken me some time... But I did find out that one of your family survived. Imagine my surprise when I found that your father had dumped you with a family of hicks on some no-name farm in the middle of nowhere! It took me nearly a decade to find out, the darkness had already come by then, after all. But when I did, I decided to send your new family, the family that you grew up with... My regards.
So tell me if you know this one... Small farm, out of the way, few know it's there... And the daemons haven't found you yet. And then suddenly tragedy strikes! A group of looters attack, taking everything they can... I'll admit, I didn't expect them to force you and your father to join them. But I suppose your family does attract the same kinds of people, don't they?"
Caius stopped dead. The realization hit him like a ton of bricks, but soon enough Lonoaw was back in his hands as he would block the blow from one of the daemons who had swung at him. But when he did speak, his words were quiet... Yet came out in a hiss.
"You didn't."
"You figured it out, did you? I suppose someone might have sent an anonymous tip, paid a bit of gil... But it's a shame what happened to your family, isn't it? Forced into servitude to those monsters, forced to hurt innocent people... Do you still dream of it, Caius? Or did you repress those memories?
It was a fun show to see... Even if I didn't expect them to have a little bit... Well, let's just say I didn't expect them to have as much fun as they did when you and your family tried to escape. I knew it'd come eventually, and when I heard it was happening, I had to come watch. A shame I didn't get there in time to catch you, as you'd already run while your family suffered, but that's just what I've come to expect from you Dragelions! Never thinking of anyone else..."
Caius took a deep breath, turning his attention to pointing Lonoaw at one of the daemons and firing point black, crumpling them.
"But I'm sure they're a forgiving sort, most country bumpkins are... So why don't I give you the reunion you've actually longed for, Caius? I knew I'd find you eventually, so I made sure to have presents ready to go..."
Caius looked toward Celes then, knowing what was to come.
"Take out as many as you can. I'll stop whatever general he throws next, then I'll join you."
He knew Celes did not have the magic left to stop another of those things. He had to head them off now, and hopefully get the kill quickly.
Caius would step forward, as an idea came to him at that moment. A small smirk crossed his lips as he would get just close enough, aim...
But the daemon master was quicker. The staff would glow, and a new red orb would hit the ground. The form that appeared held similar daemon changes to the last, but this time it came in the form of a young girl. She couldn't have been any older than ten. Caius' trek stopped then, and his brown pupils shrank at the sight.
"Brother?"
Caius perked up when the girl spoke. This one had the same level of sentience as the last, it seemed, but the master seemed to have less control. Or so it seemed. As the man would then snap his fingers and the girl's eyes would lose their pupils, letting out a bloodcurdling scream and charging Caius with arms flailing. "MAKE IT STOP, BROTHER, IT HURTS! PLEASE!" The girl screamed as they tried to strike and scratch at Caius. The Glaive would block all he could with Lonoaw, he tried to fight back, but...
He couldn't.
He couldn't bring himself to do it. His hands trembled as he continued to block blow after blow. They weren't heavy blows. They were weak, as what you'd expect from a child. But the onslaught was endless. And yet, he couldn't bring himself to harm her. Not her. Memories flooded back, ones he tried not to think about, ones he kept trying to push away...
"Stop this."
Caius would stare toward the man, his eyes having softened. He couldn't lift his blade enough to strike them. He just... Didn't have the will to do it anymore. And yet, in that moment... He understood. He understood something he was missing. Something he had pushed down, to make that isolation all the more bearable. He hadn't had a word for it before, but... He was pretty sure now he understood the definition of love. Even if not in the way that Celes had been talking about. But he felt immense, overwhelming care and attachment for the one in front of him... And he couldn't raise his blade to her. Her screams and cries agonized him beyond measure. The Glaive was ever so slowly breaking apart. His entire wall, his security, his barriers... All that had kept the inside of him hidden was breaking apart at the seams.
"Please... Please stop this!" Caius would plead softly. "I don't know what or why my father did what he did, but I had nothing to do with it... Please. Please don't make me do this. I'm begging you!"
Caius, begging? It was something even he didn't think he had the capacity to do. But whatever he was feeling for this child, even in the form it was in... He couldn't stand the pained screams anymore. He couldn't stand the idea that he'd have to put his blade to them. This had to stop. This had to stop, somehow!
The daemons meanwhile, would fall by Celes' hand far easier than the two of them had expected. Celes hadn't needed Caius after all, as while they were stronger than the ones prior, their lack of numbers and still not being all that much stronger... Odds are they would fall by the time Caius had cried out. The question was how long before Celes realized she had been the victim of a diversion?

Use your own eyes and see for yourself whose side I'm on!
I think Celes might have an aneurysm if he doesn't die soon.
Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
Her progress was impeded. Of course it was. It seemed the man had only one trick, and that trick was to summon all manner of monsters in the way. It was a nuisance more than anything, and Celes found herself loudly cursing with every swing of her sword. These demons were armed. They had some manner of corrupted intelligence but that hardly mattered when they were too slow and stupid to know how to use their own weapons. Still, it cost her time, and at this point, time was not a thing she could forgive wasting.
Because for every second they waited, the man was likely to start talking again.
”Get the girl."
Celes couldn’t even argue that. It was short, concise, to the point, and could she really blame him when she was charging to stab him in the throat? No, this she could understand, and she might have even thanked him if he hadn’t kept going.
"Caius, Caius, why the rush? You're so eager to rush to her side. Are you insinuating that your lady friend can't handle herself on her own?”
”Oh fuck you!” It was all she could manage at a time like this. She cursed his very name as she cut down each and every one of his minions. Swing! Duck! Block! She was swimming in the noxious fumes now and it almost made her cough. But she couldn’t stop now. No, she had a mission.
”Oh, how trite... All this time you haven't thought enough of her to not coddle her so. But don't worry, my lady friend,” the man paused just long enough for Celes to echo, ”Your lady friend?!” in the most scrupulous, exasperated, and enraged tone she’d ever managed in her life.
”I haven't forgotten about you. Celes, he said your name was? Don't think I don't know a thing about you.”
Celes grit her teeth together as he went on. And on. And on even further about having seen her through his monsters. About how they’d traveled together and everything else as though it somehow mattered. As though he had some kind of agenda in all of this, though she couldn’t see it for the life of her. ’Yes, yes! I’ve been waiting for this encounter for months! That’s why I hid away at the bottom of a cave in the middle of nowhere, absolutely certain you’d arrive any minute now!’ She couldn’t help but imagine him pouting at the bottom of a rocky pit, sitting in the dark in expectation of a man who would never come. What would he have done if they hadn’t taken this job? How long had he been waiting here?
”How would you like to live forever, Celes? How would you like to dodge death, just as my friends have?”
She didn’t even have words for that. No, what came out of her mouth more resembled something between a battle cry and a groan. Whatever tattered remains of her patience she’d still had left ignited burnt to nothing in the face of her sheer bloodlust.
She would shut him up. She had to. Because if she didn’t…
”As for you, Caius... I suppose that wasn't much of a reunion.”
”Oh gods not more of this!” Even as one of the swords struck her across the shoulder and sliced into the top of her arm, Celes couldn’t stop her tongue from its righteous tirade. ”Why do you care so much? What are you even doing here? No one knows what you’re on about and I don’t care! Gods, I don’t care! If you’re planning to kill us then just do it already! At this point it would be a mercy!”
He did something more with Caius’ family. Celes didn’t follow it, and she was too engrossed in her own rage to even pay attention. Caius looked struck by whatever he was doing, but at this point, Celes was biting back a collection of well-chosen words to scold him with for letting himself get so distracted.
Her magic was waning. She still had enough for another spell or two, but after that, she’d need an ether or for the man to finally grow a spine and cast something directly. He was the worst type to Celes -- a weak man so swallowed by his own gravitas and ego to care that he was only cowering behind the wills of others.
Another blade slipped past her flesh, her stomach this time. Celes winced and staggered back, but didn’t stop. No, even with the bleeding and the pain, letting herself hesitate would only lead to death. The demons were overpowering in sheer number, and as they swarmed she couldn’t let off another spell without taking another, possibly fatal, hit. Would this be how she died? It was certainly the stupidest death she could imagine, and the one that would most invoke her ire. She’d planned to die by Kefka’s hands, and while that would have a waste, at least she would have fallen with her pride. But this?
No, this was an outcome she couldn’t accept. This coward wasn’t worthy of taking her life.
Celes let out a scream of her rage and downed one then another then another still as she slashed, kicked, and punched her way through the hordes. With the space immediately around her cleared, she leapt back, shoved her hands together, and muttered the quickest spell of her life. ”Blizzaga!” Her spells were a tad repetitive, but gods if they weren’t effective. The weak-willed hordes froze solid and then shattered into thousands of noxious pieces as the gas released again. With that done, Celes wasted no time in charging forward and gaining the ground she’d lost with his distractions.
She had one spell. One spell left of any significant caliber, and she planned to use it. The coward had no power of his own; she was certain of that. If he did, he’d have used it by now instead of hiding behind his little blockade of abominations and blabbering on about Caius’ past.
Her eyes were at a laser focus. Her vision tinted red. She let out another cry as she finally, finally reached him and swung up her sword for the kill. ”Just die already!”
With another Blizzaga, the daemons were swept away in the cold, leaving only one target left for Celes. She would go after him then, and while he did draw a blade, she would find his blade only seemed to serve to block hers as he made strides backwards with incredible speed. Had Caius been in the right mind, he would have noted that it was a sound decision for a primary spellcaster to focus on speedy defense to buy time and space for casting spells should an opponent go for melee. Celes was capable of both, but not all spellcasters, especially ones with a heavy variety of magic, were able to do so with the same amount of skill she had in swordsmanship. For every blow she swung, he would either jump back at the last moment, or swing at the right moment to parry and then make distance between them. But his eyes for the most part still seemed to be focused on Caius. His eyes were filled with hatred. He was a predator that was about to eat the last species of his prey in the world... And he wanted to savour it. He had projected all of his hatred for this entire family on this one instance, knowing he would never get the chance again. But despite that, he did still look to Celes for a moment...
"I was wrong about you" He spoke, an amused tint to his tone. "There stands your friend, breaking apart at the seams, and you don't feel a thing. How do you think he feels right now, Celes? I have the family he grew up with in the palm of my hands... I can do whatever I want with them. And yet until now... He tried and tried to hide it. But I know when a man is trying to hide. I thought at first that perhaps he just had a cold soul like his father... But seeing him refuse to attack now, I see the truth. It's not that at all... And if not that, then why?"
The man chuckled.
"I understand now. It's because of you. He doesn't want to be a burden to you. He doesn't want to distract you. He doesn't want to risk you. And yet you let him suffer. You ignored his pains because all you can think about are your own... You don't care for him, or even for your green-haired friend... You only care about yourself."
The man's lips twitched into the biggest smile as their blades clashed once more for a moment.
"Congratulations, Celes. You're the coldest heart in the realm. And one day, you'll realize that when you're alone it will be all because of you."
Whether he was telling the truth, an interpretation or if he sought to distract Celes was hers to interpret. Finally, he would make enough room between them to leap high and land on one of his machines higher up, giving him a moment to watch as Caius finally seemed to lose his resolve and beg for this to stop. He frowned. He finally frowned. The man let out a sigh.
"I had hoped to savour this before I killed the last of you, but... This is just pathetic" The former nobleman would admit. "Begging, Caius? Really? Your father would never beg... What kind of man are you? And yet, it's so pathetic that I can't help but want to help you... So I'll do you one... Last... Favour."
With a snap of his fingers, the girl that Caius had grown up with as his little sister, would finally cease her assault. But then the screaming grew louder. The screaming engulfed the room. It was bloodcurdling, it was the screams of one being tortured with pain beyond belief.
"PLEASE MAKE IT STOP, IT HURTS, IT HURTS!" The girl screamed and Caius' eyes widened as he would drop his blade and kneel down. Careful not to touch the black substances. He would try and cradle her non-goopy side best he could. It was as if an instinct of his had kicked in. He was clearly incredibly panicked, yet his tone took a softer side as he tried to calm her down.
"It's okay, Emily, it's alright, I'm here..." Caius would speak as he tried to find some way to comfort her, desperate to make this end but knowing he couldn't do anything made him feel all the more helpless. "It's going to be okay, Em, you're going to be..."
What happened next was not something that one should describe in proper detail and will not be. It was a gruesome sight, as the creature forged from the body and soul of his adopted sister would explode, starting from the upper and ending at the lower. Caius was completely stunned, as he found himself covered in what seemed to be blood. Or something resembling it. His reaction was slow, but when it hit him, it hit him hard. He lost his grip on Lonoaw and it hit the ground before disappearing. It was the clearest sign of all, of what was going on in his head.
Rock. Bottom.
Caius' legs trembled and then crumbled under him as he lost his footing. How Caius was feeling right now was likely indescribable. With the knowledge he'd attacked and killed what remained of his blood, and then watching the family he'd grown up with and grown to love suffer and die all over again while he could do nothing. The pain he was feeling was immeasurable and left him staring at where his little sister had been. His eyes were wide, his mouth held agape. His pupils had turned grey and he just seemed... Empty. Like his soul had been ripped out of his body. Caius' entire world had come down around him, memories he'd repressed, emotions he hadn't felt in so long that he'd held in, all came out at once. He couldn't even cry. He just felt... Nothing anymore.
At least for a few moments. As the more he began to regain himself, the more that those emotions began to bubble up to the surface in the form of one thing. And that one thing was pure, unadulterated rage.
His breathing had grown heavy and haggard. Caius would slowly make his way to his feet, every inch of him shaking and seething. He had hit rock bottom, and now everything he felt was coming out... There was no more hiding, no more holding back. It was all coming to the surface.
And then he let out a scream of three words that echoed throughout the room.
"I'LL KILL YOU!"
Lonoaw would be launched forward, warping Caius past Celes as he would find himself at the top of the machine, swinging at the man who finally seemed to be enjoying himself again at Caius' change. Caius swung with attack after attack, but the man telegraphed them before jumping back. Something seemed to kick in for Caius, as he would allow his blade to disappear, before holding out his hands. A fireball began to charge in his hands, but then it began to get bigger, and bigger, and bigger... Before he finally cast the spell.
The large fireball that came crashing down on the machine would be equivalent to Firaga. Something that Caius would not be able to replicate on his own without the proper learning and training. But as it hit the machine, and the others around it, they began to explode. Casting a spell, the Mage would radiate a blinding light that when the smoke cleared, and the machines had been destroyed... He was gone.
Caius would find himself falling after the machine he'd been on would be destroyed along with the rest of the daemon harvesting equipment. He would hit the ground hard, and roll along it until he came to a stop. When the smoke cleared, there was nothing left of the makeshift lab. Just then, the man's voice would ring out from somewhere.
"Oh. You've destroyed my precious equipment... I suppose that means I no longer have a reason to remain here, doesn't it? But don't worry... We'll see each other again soon. I'm in no rush, after all... You've made one thing clear.
You are no threat to me."
As Caius did not have the experience in magic that Celes did, and had used a spell beyond his level and knowledge out of pure instinct and emotion and concentrated magic, Caius had used up all of his magic. It had taken everything out of him to use that one attack, yet he would manage to prop himself up, using what seemed to be a small hidden reserve to at least summon his sword and keep himself standing with it. Caius was still seething, still trembling, still desperately looking around for his tormentor to gut him. The only thing he found was one of the daemons who had barely escaped Celes' Blizzaga just from being on the outline, and it's leg had been frozen solid. Rushing forward, Caius would drive his blade into it. And then proceeded to attack it over, and over, and over again.
"FUCKER!"
Caius screamed that word as he stabbed at it with nothing but pure, blind hatred and rage. Caius had completely lost control of himself, leaving him a mess of emotions as he seemed to be almost treating this thing as if it were the mage itself.
"FUCKER! FUCKER! FUCKER!"
He continued to scream out even as the thing was clearly dead, losing the strength to summon his sword as it disappeared, leaving Caius to just continue to attack it using his fists.
"FUCKER! FUCKER! FUCKER!"
Each blow brought out another cry, another curse. Until finally the daemon would disappear when it's body's time had expired. Caius just stared at where it had been, his legs crumpling again as he found himself falling back down again. Caius found himself just staring into thin air, no longer seething but still trembling and struggling to keep himself seated upright as he only barely seemed to be holding back tears.

Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
The demon master had a sword. Against all logic, reason, or previous establishment, he whipped out a sword in time to block her -- a blade which she could only assume he must have pulled directly out of his ass. Not only that, but as she sidestepped him to try once again to swing, he managed some ridiculous maneuver to evade her. Truly, was there a thing he couldn’t do? In fact, Celes was starting to wonder if he was even human. There were few in the world that could match her (at least where she came from) and she wasn’t entirely human herself. Who was this mysterious, incomprehensible man who lurked in caverns instead of pursuing those he apparently expected and who could not only raise countless impossible creatures but also had taken the time to train himself better than a swordswoman who had been practicing the skill since birth?
It felt unfair, really. Unreal and absurd were two stronger words for it. The man couldn’t have been human -- not with speed like that -- though what he was she couldn’t say. What creatures lurked about Caius’ world in such number that they’d run into them here? Was this what had brought Caius’ world to darkness? The coward certainly seemed uncanningly like the man Caius had spoke of in his stories.
And still. The man spoke.
He was taunting her. That was clear enough, so Celes didn’t even deign it with a response. That was what he was looking for, wasn’t it? She didn’t argue whether she should have been paying attention to Caius. Caius could look after himself, after all, and if she’d let herself get distracted they both would have died. He tried to pin all of Caius’ actions on her -- what a laugh -- as though they’d been anything but friendly allies teaming up against monsters! He’d spoken of her repeatedly as though she stood on a pedestal for another man’s story. The idiot. What on earth did he think he’d gain by pretending to know anything about her? Did he think it would shake her somehow? No, all it did was prove to her exactly how fragile the man’s ego truly was.
”Congratulations, Celes. You're the coldest heart in the realm. And one day, you'll realize that when you're alone it will be all because of you."
”I’ve been there. Thanks. Though you would’ve known that about me if you had any idea what you were talking about, wouldn’t you?” Celes shot him with a look as cold as steel as she moved once again to slash open his stomach, but just as quickly as he’d come, he somehow managed to dodge back and gave such a mighty leap that he might have been a bullfrog. Celes staggered back, staring at him in shock.
The man wasn’t human. That was the only explanation for powers so ridiculous.
And at last, Celes was out of options. She couldn’t reach him up there and she couldn’t use her last spell offensively when she had no idea what else could be thrown at them out of nowhere. So she stopped, panting as she glared up at him. Did he have wings now too?
There was screaming behind her. For some reason, Caius was fighting a little girl? When had that happened? She exploded into a pile of inky corruption and Caius knelt beside her remains with tears in his eyes. Was that another undead family member? How many did Caius have and how did this man manage to track them all down and turn them into conveniently portable undead slaves? At this point, the man was toying with Caius so blatantly that Celes could only assume he was getting off on it. The idea did not console her.
Whatever was exchanged between them, it seemed to finally shake Caius. For a moment, he just sat there in shock before straightening himself, shaking in rage. ”I’ll kill you!” He gave a gutteral, murderous scream before throwing himself forward with his sword. Celes stepped back and watched, unable to contribute anything of real importance as she wondered how on earth any of this had happened.
Was she having a dream? It certainly would have felt like it if not for her bleeding arm and stomach. Her wounds pounded now that the adrenaline was wearing off, but then, this wouldn’t be the first time she’d been hurt in a dream. She wondered if she’d wake up cursing any minute now. She hoped Relm wouldn’t take the wrong idea from it.
The demon master seemed even more skilled than Caius with a sword. Somehow. And then Caius summoned fire in his hands like a firaga spell. Celes was fairly certain he’d never learned how to do that, but she was beyond arguing now. Then everything was exploding because that’s what happened when using large sources of flame around delicate oil-driven machinery. Celes raised a hand, casting a quick shell spell around herself as the heat rushed by. There was a flash of light above and a whiff of magic and then the demon master was gone. Just gone.
So he could do magic now too? What kind of demigods was Caius’ world breeding?
In characteristic fashion, the man refused to silence himself even once he was no longer with them. ”You've made one thing clear. You are no threat to me."
Apparently they weren’t. In her own world, Celes had been preparing herself to take on a literal god of magic, and yet she’d hardly been able to land a single blow on a crazy man in a cave. That was something that would leave Celes awake at night for weeks to come, she was certain, but as his voice finally, mercifully faded into an echo, she had to admit that for once she agreed with the man.
They had been completely outmatched. And she doubted even Kefka himself would have been able to do much against a man like him. Well, not until he used his light of judgement at least.
Caius did not look well. In fact, he was shaking and it looked like he might fall over. Celes let out a long breath to steady herself before grasping at the wound on her arm and starting forward to heal him. Then he saw a demon. And lost his mind.
Celes stopped and just stared at him as he cursed repeatedly, smashing the thing into pieces. ”Oh,” was all she could say before she took to healing her own wounds with light cure spells to keep them from bleeding. There wasn’t anything she could do for him until he calmed down, and it looked dangerous to approach him while he was like this. Busying herself while she waited would be just a little less awkward.
Then the demon dissolved like the others and Caius fell to his knees, staring off. Celes hesitated uncertainly before stepping towards him. ”Should we...go?” Celes asked because she didn’t know what else to say. What else was there to say after all of that? ”If you’re hurt, I still have enough magic to help.” She raised a hand towards him cautiously. ”It doesn’t look like there’s anything else to do here.”
In truth, the man was fast, but not offensively skilled with a blade. Had either Caius or Celes managed to catch him off guard, there was a good chance that the daemon master would have been a puddle of mush at this point. But if his story before would have told either of them anything, this man was good at one thing - and that was surviving. It was something Caius had noticed, but... Given his state of mind, the last thing he was doing was applying that to his combat style. It would be - once he got his bearings - something he would review for next time.
Caius stared into space until Celes would approach him. Snapping to attention as if she had just woken him up from a trance, the Glaive would stare up at her for a moment before lowering his head again. He didn't want her to see him like this. He didn't want her to see him any worse than this. She was already frustrated as she was, he knew. He didn't want to lend to her burdens. Slowly, he would get himself to his feet and took a shaky step forward. The magic he'd used had pushed his body past it's limits and he knew it. He'd been running on adrenaline and nothing else ever since. But that was gone now. There was a good chance it would be some time before he'd be back to 100% again.
Time spent not on the job... And time spent that he'd have to sit there and confront all that had happened. Not something he was looking forward to.
"I'm not hurt, just... Tired" Caius spoke softly. He lost his footing after a few moments but managed to catch himself. Letting out a frustrated sigh, he looked toward Celes. "I request your aid, if you can spare it" He whispered as he moved to lean on her so he could walk without issue if she allowed it. Caius was too tired to say much, and just seemed focused for now on getting out of here.
"I saw... A light up ahead. If we can just get to it, it might lead us outside" Caius would point out as he motioned toward it. It was true, for if Celes brought them toward it, the light would bring them to the surface using a path that was obstructed by rocks. They'd need to clear them away first, though. It was clear that this path was not meant to be found, but it wasn't far from where they had left their cart either.
Once there, the two would get their cart as far away as possible before making camp.
