“Did you see the color of the dragon’s scales? In my experience dragons’ weakness can be determined by their scale color.” If only she had her dragon whip - they could make even shorter work of the beast. Dragons were rare finds in her country so she had left it in her chest back home. Her mouth was starting to ramble in order for them to strategize.
Memorizing monsters and their weaknesses had started to become a hobby of hers. When she spent her formative years in the Feymarch, her options for hobbies were very few. Time not spent learning magic and learning from the Eidolans was spent in their massive library. She’d poured over the tomes absorbing all the information she could in preparation for returning to the surface. The information would prove useful one day.
“Have you fought a dragon before? My friend — he had a helmet shaped like a dragon’s skull.” Rydia shook her head. Her whip struck out in the open wound of creature. The arachnid made an audible hiss. Knowing there could only be more above them, she focused on forging a path ahead. It wouldn’t do for them to be even more distracted by their many-legged foes than they already were.
“Oh - Leviathan…” A dead end. This cave seemed to never end! The White Magic Float spell would not be suited for a predicament like the one before them. She wasn’t a Dragoon or else she could Jump up there. Wait —- at the sound of his voice, she looked at him in understanding of Caius’ solution. “We have no other option.” Simultaneously, she grasped his hand and cast a Blizzara spell behind them. Spikes of ice rained down in a wall formation. “Hurry. I don’t know how many that spell can hold off.” From her options - it seemed the most likely to succeed because it could provide a worthwhile barrier compared to Fire that only existed when there is fuel or Thunder that flashed and it was gone.
"Blue. They were blue" Caius would respond as the two would make their way as far as they could from the slowly growing horde of monsters. If they were to stop and engage them all here, it would burn their reserves. It was best to save their energy for this dragon. The creatures in here were not part of the job, the dragon was.
"I've never fought one before" He would admit as they would continue to forge their path ahead, with Caius slashing and stabbing at everything that popped out at them. He tried not to waste movement if he could, trying not to use up too much energy as they went. Then, of course they hit their dead end. Luckily Caius had a solution, Rydia just needed to agree to it...
He held out his hand, and explained that he could get them out of this, if he could just get them to the cliff above... But he understood if Rydia wasn't going to trust him. They had just met after all, and he'd given her no reason to trust him. Granted, he'd given her no reason to distrust him either, and both of their survival was important if they were to see this through. Nobody wanted to deal with a dragon alone if they could help it. But by what he'd heard of this creature... Caius knew that right now, he was not strong enough to tango with them on his own. Not yet, anyway.
Rydia took his hand, and Caius would allow Lonoaw to disappear as another blade - a dagger - would appear in the other. Being better for throwing, Caius would watch the creatures coming at them as he would precisely lob the dagger up and above. Watching it from the corner of his eye, Caius would take a deep breath... Before the two of them would warp just before the creatures would try and strike at them through the cracks of her icy wall formation.
The two of them would re-appear just above the cliff and Caius would catch the dagger as they landed. "Let's go!" He called as he would yank her hand a bit to bring about a sense of urgency before he took off, letting go of her hand once he started running. The two would have to hurry, as many of those creatures would be able to clear the wall and reach them before long. Rydia had only managed to buy them time.
But a light would appear toward the end, and the two of them would find themselves at the summit of the mountain. As if on cue, a rockslide could be heard in the cave they had just left... The monsters would not bother them any longer, though the two would have to find another way back down.
"We're here..." He managed to breathe out, taking a moment to catch his breath. "Meaning the monster is most likely near."
Rydia’s fist clenched around her whip. A memory flashed through her mind without prompting of a dragon’s icy breath chilling her and her friends to the bone. Her nerve endings tingle in phantom pains with the sharp recollection. Claws raking through armor. A tail and wings with the strength to toss a warrior into a stone wall. The freezing blast had made even the hardiest members of their party survive with injuries bordering on frost bite. She hoped for their sakes that this dragon wasn’t of the same breed as the last.[break][break]
“An ice dragon then.” She breathed out in a gasp as Caius’ warp spell landed them at their destination. “Fighting dragons… it’s not as glorious as the stories make it sound. Is there a limit to that spell? Do you need to see the target?” That Warp spell …. it’s as if it’s a Dragoon’s Jump ability were enchanted with magic. The young woman had to quickly learn the limits of her spells. Usually she kept her power reserved for a summon, but that power was restrained behind the world’s planar boundaries. It was the only way she could explain the phenomenon.[break][break]
“Not all dragons are bad. Like many creatures they have the potential to be good.” Reaching a hand out she withdrew it hurriedly as she touched cold stone. Instead of heat rising in this circumstance, the cold continued to linger becoming harsher at the summit. She wrapped her dress around her more closely as they crept closer to the dragon’s lair. “It must be lonely up here.” Is it too much to hope it didn’t hear the rockslide?[break][break]
Rydia entertained the thought of summoning the Mist Dragon, but she knew he wouldn’t be of much help against its colder blooded counterpart. This dragon likely had keen senses to see through the dense fog that her companion could summon. “Do you have thoughts on a strategy?” She planned to set a fire spell and a lightning spell against its scaly hide to test its vulnerabilities. The summoner was not much use up close, but she could provide healing or magical boons to the party.[break][break]

As the two would reach the summit, Rydia would suggest that most likely their quarry was an Ice Dragon. Caius though, was at first preoccupied with the surroundings around them. They were on a circular summit, frigid cold and holding patches of ice throughout that would likely make their fight a slippery one. It could mean that it was an Ice Dragon, but… It could also be due to how cold it was up here. On the edges of the summit were spiked structures, small enough but very much sharp enough to impale Caius or Rydia if they weren’t careful. Caius noted several large rocks, and blocks of ice scattered around… It might be possible to use them for cover if necessary. But the biggest thing was the drop. They were high up, very… High up. Very, very high up. If they fell from here, most likely they would die. That was the open and shut of it. Most likely no magic or warp magic that the two of them possessed would be able to stop them from a deathly plummet of that height. They would have to exercise caution. What made it clear though, was that against a flying enemy… They were now placed at a severe disadvantage.
Caius would turn to her then, now actually nodding his head to acknowledge that he had heard her. It as an Interesting idea, he supposed. Blue means Ice. Caius had never actually fought a dragon before, but it sounded like Rydia had fought them before. He was curious about her experience. How many dragons had Rydia fought? Did she fight them alone or in a group? Did she really need Caius here if she could single-handedly take on dragons? Though they did both need to make a run for it when it came to the smaller monsters, so maybe not single-handedly. But he was already thinking on potential strategies. That was just how Caius was, even without a good idea of what to expect, he’d begin formulating strategies on what he had. The thing had wings? Caius was considering if he could clip them, and if he should clip them. Though with a monster this dangerous, it was most likely he would need to put it down in order to stop it. Caius did not have the strength to stop a monster of this magnitude and apparent strength considering what it had done to merit this bounty for it… To the degree that he could just pacify it. He could not keep it from attacking again, he did not have the capability to do so without killing it and Caius knew this. Which only made Rydia’s proclamation that not all dragons were bad that much harder to swallow. He wished killing these monsters were unneeded. But as he’d found out over and over again, it absolutely was.
Rydia would ask about his abilities and their limitations and Caius would think it over a few moments before obliging her.
“It runs on my own energy, mana I suppose to some. When I’ve exhausted my reserves either through magic or my Warp Strike, I cannot use then until my body has rested or been restored in another fashion” Caius would explain. “So long as I can throw my weapon to it, I can warp to it. My weapons are linked to me through the Power of Kings. I can summon them at will, and when I throw them, I can warp forward enough to grab them and swing at my foes in order to take them by surprise.”
Caius would silently agree with a nod of his head when Rydia suggested it was lonely up here. “It’s cold, too” He responded calmly and quietly as he tightened his armored Glaive jacket a bit in order to try and salvage as much warmth as possible. The higher they got, the colder it got and they were pretty damn high. Rydia would ask if he had any strategy in mind, and Caius pondered over what he’d considered earlier.
“I’ve never seen a dragon until today… Only read of them. Only heard of them. Then heard about them being released in bulk like a conquering army” Caius would respond, taking a deep breath as he noticed his outcoming breath was now visible in frozen vapor. “Apparently their hide is incredibly tough and will be difficult for weapons to pierce through. I’ll likely look for openings in their hides if I can find weak spots” He would continue on, just naming off all that had come to mind and continue to come to mind on the fly as he threw his thoughts at the board. “If they have wings, then it would likely be worth crippling them. I don’t like the idea of plucking the wings off the butterfly, so to speak. But I don’t possess the overwhelming strength to dominate a creature such as this and keep it from coming back and causing harm again. And I assume you do not either. As if you did, you would have no need of me.”
Caius could hear rumbling, as the ground began to tremble under them. Looks like she had jinxed the dragon realizing there was a commotion and potential prey on it’s mountaintop. The last thing Caius saw in his examination before their opponent appeared was traces of straw sticking out of a hole in the mountain. Caius didn’t get a chance to look in detail though, as a large creature would crash it’s mighty talons onto the side of the summit. The creature was definitely a dragon, though it wouldn’t look the same as the Ice Dragons that Rydia had met back in her world. It had brilliant blue scales, but they were a darker color than the usual Ice Dragons and a slightly different face. What was clear was that the monster wasn’t friendly.
Caius would light a hand alight to match Rydia’s suggestions before, and drew his sword Lonoaw in the other hand. The dragon would let out a loud roar that threatened to blow them back before it would take a deep breath. Knowing by the stories what was coming, Caius would prepare for an ice blast akin to what Rydia’s suggestion would make it be. But the building heat that he could feel even from where he was standing made Caius’ eyes widen. His gaze darted toward Rydia as he would extinguish his hand and instead charge full speed, tackling Rydia in a bull-like charge to get the two of them behind one of the large rocks just in time for the dragon to unleash a monstrous, massive flamethrower of searing, white-hot flames that threatened to engulf and melt the both of them to nothing within seconds had that attack hit. Caius could feel the overwhelming heat even if they hadn’t been hit, as sweat began to drip down his face.
“Are you sure?” Caius would ask Rydia calmly, referring to her Ice Dragon guess. They needed a plan and they needed one quickly. As the dragon’s fire breath would cease, Caius prepared himself for what it might do next…
Rydia’s thoughts whirled with possible strategies. She credited her developing ability to think on the move to talks with Cecil and Kain. The young woman tended to think with the mind of someone fluent in monster strengths and weaknesses. She’d learned much from her friends who had been trained in what many called a formal civilized environment. Magic would always be her strength and her crutch because of how much she relied on her abilities. The summoner did not trust herself with melee weapons other than a whip or mage’s staff to channel her power.[break][break]
She filed his answer away in her mind and incorporated that skillset into her strategy. He must be quite accurate to throw his weapon at an object to warp to it. It must take a specific person to be chosen for the Power of Kings. She wondered if it took rigorous training to be proficient in that ability. Too much thinking would cause her to be effectively distracted from their mission.[break][break]
Rydia scanned the landscape. She took a deep breath at the height. The airship had helped her with any fear of heights. It would be rough for them if they got swiped off the mountaintop. It didn’t leave them with a lot of room to maneuver. Not for the first time, she wished she had more of her Eidolan friends to assist her. It’d take everything they had to survive this fight.[break][break]
“But dragons don’t do that? What’s the world come to?” She’d have to research that phenomenon. Dragons didn’t appear en masse. It was a topic to research later. “Try focusing on its underside and its wings. When we find its weakness, could you warp to the dragon and repeatedly attack it? Initiate physical contact after a round of magic? I can provide covering fire.”[break][break]
Rydia’s face quickly paled at the build-up of heat from the dragon’s heat breath. Her breath is briefly knocked out of her as Caius moved her out of the way. “Thank you.” There went her theory. Up in smoke. She looked up into its predatory gaze and weakly said, “I suppose you wouldn’t want to jam a weapon in its open maw.”[break][break]
She stepped away from Caius, trying to find the clearest area where she could draw the dragon’s attention. The summoner would appear the weaker target. Hopefully it’d focus on her and she could distract it for him. Rydia snapped the whip against exposed rock. “Hey! That’s not very nice. How’d you like a taste of this?” Extending her hand she arced a bolt of Thunder magic at an extended wing.[break][break]

Luckily for Caius, he'd used firearms prior to becoming a Kingsglaive. He'd had time to hone his accuracy. Which was perfect when he would both become a Glaive... And got his hands on Lonoaw, his gunblade. It was a perfect fit. But what wasn't a perfect fit was two humans on top of a mountain, about to be incinerated by a dragon. Caius nodded his head as he would hear the plan that Rydia had cooked up. Or well, it was more like a suggestion, but...
Caius would take a deep breath as he would peek out from the cover they had provided. He would be forced to leap away though, when the dragon's claws came baring down and would slice in half the surface they'd just been hiding behind. As Rydia would grab it's attention, the dragon would begin to head toward her, taking a deep breath as it's throat would begin to conjure more fire. The Thunder magic would hit the wing, and the dragon's wing would lower a bit as if acknowledging the blow - but the dragon would launch the flaming breath at Rydia once more soon after.
Caius meanwhile, had waited until it would attack before charging forward, tossing Lonoaw at it's underside and Warping forward. Caius would immediately begin attacking it's underside, slash after slash seeming to hit it's weaker underbelly and clearly beginning to cause damage. But it's sharp scales were also negating a lot of the damage, though not so much as if Caius had tried to get it's upper side, he realized now that he could see the scales up close. But Caius would have to toss his blade back and warp back - barely getting out of the way as the dragon would suddenly slash at him without a moment's hesitation when the flaming breath stopped.
"Blast, it's so fast!" Caius would curse, baring his teeth. He wouldn't be able to get in many hits this way, distracted or not...
