The sky above burned yellow and bright. Gentle winds stroked at her back, guiding her out from within the southern forest, where she would soon come upon the vast grasslands of Torensten. As she left the forest, the tropical winds would waste no time and greet Zerrelle with a strong gust of its moist winds, nearly making her tumble to the ground. It didn’t take long before Zerrelle would be hit with the heat and moisture of the tropics, causing her to sweat from within her bandages and warm clothing. It was almost shocking, how the winds almost managed to blow her away, “Am I really that light?” she’d wonder.
Zerrelle looked up into the sky, so blue and clear. The clouds were distant and spacious, and these fields of emerald spanned out far beyond the horizon of which the ordinary eyes could see. To her, it seemed as if the sky and earth were two completely different worlds. In her mesmerization she would see it, flying through this blue sky, mechanical birds of varying shapes and sizes, passed above and beyond the skies of Torensten. “What in the world am I seeing and what exactly is this place where mechanical beasts traverse the skies?” The sight of this made her wonder. Zerrelle felt as though this situation was almost beyond her.
As such, it reminded Zerrelle of her home, the technologies of the past, that belonged to that of a distant world, and for a second she would mistake this one to be her own, but sadly it was not. For she had come from someplace far away, a place far beyond the veils of times and space and had arrived in a place that she did not know. The look of awe on her face soon turned into a gaze of sadness, as she realized that this place, was not her home, it would never be. Looking ahead, she could see that before the endless plains and hills, lay a city of which many legends and forgotten truths reside from within. The city of heroes, although at this time, to her, it was just some old nation by the sea. Dragging her feet in the sun, she proceeded to walk the main road and venture forth towards the gates which led way into the city of Torensten.

The Dragonblades
Another rift.
Caius had not seen many of them. It was rare that they appeared long enough for someone to catch sight of them. But they always appeared whenever someone new had found their way into this world. This world was a bastion between different worlds, and it seemed to be pulling people from different words and time periods by the day. And just as it made people appear, it also made some disappear without a trace. And for those that had grown to know those people, those memories of them slowly faded away... Leaving an empty void where life had once been.
Caius had been headed back to his little cottage in the woods when he saw it. Things were set over at the Wyvern's Rest for the day, so Caius had thought to go find Vordun and maybe do a bit of fishing over at the Pale Coast. Or maybe just rest at home for a bit before moving on with the day. Vordun could use a bath, after all. Fortunately, Vordun wasn't here with him when he went to investigate the rift. He did not want to frighten whoever had come out of it by having Vordun there. First visual impressions could be... Tricky, when it came to his companion.
But Caius had to wonder, just who had been brought from the rift? Were they friendly or dangerous? While this world had been graced with many kind and virtuous people... Caius had also seen sociopaths, psychopaths... People who had even destroyed their own world before being sent here by some cruel trick of the gods. If this presence was dangerous... It was his duty to snuff it out before the fires spread.
It wasn't long before he spotted someone with clothes clearly unsuitable for Torensten's climate. And of a kind that he did not recognize from anywhere. Not even from the kinds of clothing he had seen that came from other worlds entirely. Most likely, this was it. She looked confused and disoriented. Definitely checks out.
"Miss?" Caius called out, managing to recognize what appeared to be a female figure under that black hat and cloak. "Are you lost, miss? Do you need a hand?"
She had been minding herself, focusing on nothing but the path ahead of her. In the midst of her own self-mindedness, Zerrelle would have never expected that she would have the opportunity to encounter someone or something so soon, especially since she had just journeyed a long way through the forest, but to think they would approach her so carelessly. Did they want something of her, or perhaps they had other things in mind? Nevertheless, it would only be a mere moment before she would find out what that something truly was.
As she departed onto the path ahead of her, a sudden voice would call out to her from the forest side, making her nearly jump in her place. Hastefully turning towards the source of the sound, she would point her hand in the direction of the voice, all but ready to form a fire spell from within her palm. A simple command was all that was needed, and with the flick of her tongue, a fireball would formulate from within her palm and fly towards the creature within but an instant. Embalming them in a burning blaze. Yet it was then in those simple seconds, that she saw it, within a glimpse of her shaken vision. Yellow strands and dull golden pearls, would flash within her eyes, “Yellowman?!” she would call out in confusion, as she realized the creature she had been aiming at, was no creature, but an actual human being.
Greeting her teeth in frustration, she would drag her own arm upwards, as to avoid the possibility of casting the spell mentally, but in her attempt to do so, she would throw herself back a bit too hard and would lose her footing, falling down upon her bottom. Despite all that has happened, a long sigh of relief would escape her lips, as she realized that she had been successful in controlling her magic before she could manage to do any accidental harm. Well even though it seemed to her that all was well, the truth of the matter was that she was only rather successful to an extent. To note, magical combat was quite new to Zerrelle, as she had just recently begun studying the spells found within her Astral Grimoire, but the fact that she was suddenly pushed into this world without any form of warning or kind of preparation, didn’t give her much time to practice. This spell also focused on attacking from distance, but she had tried to shoot it at point-blank range when it was already damn too late, but that thought in itself scared her. How did they manage to walk up next to her without her noticing their presence? She shuttered.
As she had been nearly placed on her backside, Zerrelle would finally get the chance to observe the human man properly. She looked up and down at he who had approached her, his hair and eyes were golden, and gleamed with a particular dark teel. His clothes were rather worn and old, and he wore leather boots, of watery fashion, “had he perhaps come back from fishing?” she wondered. Nevertheless, as she rose from the forest floor and patted herself down, she would realize how she felt utterly dumbfounded that the one to startle her, was nothing but a simple fisherman, although clearly misunderstanding the situation, she would remain true to her actions, “I can’t believe this, no! Leave me alone.” she would mumble under her breath, audibly enough for him to make sense of what she had said. Clearly being cold and distant on purpose. “I have nothing to do with you, and you have nothing to do with me. Now scram fisherman.” She would say briefly, looking deep into his golden eyes, before fanning him off. It was clear that she was trying to insult him, with the intent to order or perhaps scare the six-foot-four man away, despite her small size.

The Dragonblades
Oh, crapbaskets.
He knew that stance pretty quickly. They were planning an attack. Whether they had mistaken him for a monster or if he had just called out to a local highwayman, he didn't know. But Caius held his ground. He could summon his sword at anytime, so he slowly held up his hands to show that he meant no harm. If she did attack, then he would not be unarmed for long. And then he heard the voice? Yellowman? What was a yellowman? Was she speaking another language? Was she broken somehow? Did he somehow break the oddly dressed stranger?
Then all of a sudden there were more movements.
Red flag, red flag, red flag.
Alarm bells were blaring like the chimes of a wedding ceremony. Except bad. Really bad. And not the bad where some strange, sad little men called their marriage a ball and chain. I mean the fiery death kind of bad. His arms slowly began to fall to his sides as Caius began preparations to counter the spell if need be. He kept his stance non-threatening and unassuming for now, just in case. Worst case scenario, he could catch the enemy by surprise.
"Uhh... Not Yellowman! Caius!" he called back, clearly unsure of what in Bahamut was even going on. And then all of a sudden the woman jerked back and fell on her rear end after a show of fireworks seemed to explode around her. Caius wasn't able to prevent himself from going into stance. While his sword wasn't summoned just yet, he betrayed his capability as a combatant fairly quickly as his body moved without thought. A defense mechanism, for better or worse. But as he slowly approached to survey the carnage, suddenly she spoke,
Did she try to use fisherman in an insulting tone? While he wasn't exactly dressed to the nines, he didn't know if he would say he looked the part of a fisherman. He'd wanted to go fishing sure, but he was more wearing work clothes. But he could blame that on either her clearly being disoriented, or the distance.
"The only thing that stinks of fish here is your mouth."
Ooh, that had slipped out. Being insulted and told to scram when he was just checking on someone's welfare had brought out just a bit of sass from the mercenary. "It's not my fault you look like you traveled all the way to Torensten looking like you didn't bother finding out a thing about it. With your clothes, you'll be a cooked sardine well before anything I fish up will be."
She looked really underprepared for tropical weather.
Zerrelle’s eyes widened in surprise at his words, “My mouth?!”, her cheeks flushed red with anger and embarrassment, “I am not a fish!” she yelled back at him, through muffled words, as she had hastily covered her mouth with her hand as if to keep something strange from seeping out, even though there was nothing actually there, she had fallen prey to her own gullibleness. Indeed, by now, Zerrelle had thought that the strange man named Caius should have run off by now, especially after hearing her threats and insults, but instead, he would go on to return some insults of his own, which surprised her deeply. “Who did he think he was, to speak to me in such a manner? I, a sorceress, a daughter of Hyne. Did he perhaps wish to die?” she thought, riled, but still stunned by his hasty approach.
Her hand slowly fell to her side, and a long sigh would leave her mouth in utter frustration. It was true, she had been, as he said, “Cooking” underneath her cape and a rather large hat, but she would refuse to say anything about it, she was stubborn and didn’t give in to sense until it was thoroughly beaten into her. After taking a breath and regaining her composure, Zerrelle thought, about how she could respond to such insults and deal with the attitude of this man.
Doing her best to pose herself as tall, since Caius clearly towered above her, she would puff out her chest, and walk towards him, her pridefulness clearly showing. “You. You said your name was Caius, was it not?” she would ask, trying to affirm what she had heard him mention earlier. Leaning on her right hip, her arms folded around her chest, “Hmmph, well CLAUSE, what do you suggest I try wearing then?” She had repeated his name wrong on purpose, calling him Clause, instead of Caius, emphasizing the word Clause rather excessively because she wanted to tick him off, once again for a third time.
Her response made it quite evident that she did not know how to survive in tropical climates such as this, for she was only used to living in places where the hills were high and the winds cold, but she would never admit to her own shortcomings, at least not now. Indeed, she believed that whatever clothes he could possibly prepare, would never liken to her current taste, which surely befitted those of a true sorceress, like her hat, she would never give up her hat. Talking about clothes, now that Caius was standing much closer, Zerrelle could see that his clothes weren’t so much befitting those of a fisherman but were rather those meant for work. For a second, a gaze of realization would cross her face, as a thought came to her mind that perhaps, he was more than just a simple worker, given how he responded to her spell earlier. Yes, she noticed. Just before she had fallen upon her behind, he had gotten into a defensive stance of his own, given that she was unable to recognize his fighting style, she would simply shake off the thought, thinking that it was most likely just a coincidence and what she was dealing with here, was truly just your everyday soldier, and with a small snicker, she would edge on the man, “How about you make yourself useful, and tell me what you know of this place…” she would pause looking back at the city next to the ocean, “Torensten was it?”

The Dragonblades
Caius' eyes narrowed and then rolled as the prideful minx puffed out her chest in an attempt to look intimidating, strode up to him and then tried again with the insults. Seriously, get the hint lady. He was just trying to help before she decided to get insulting. Since she clearly decided to continue to be insulting for whatever reason instead of realizing he was talking about her garb being terrible for this weather though, Caius couldn't help the exasperated sigh.
Yessiree folks. We’re not dealing with the average everyday stupid anymore. This was… Advanced stupid.
Her insults were even worse this time. And not in the insulting way. In fact, Caius was more insulted by how awkward it was that she said his name, and then replaced it with another name. Like, in the way that one would say when they can't remember your name as an insult. But forgot the fact she had already said his name correctly.
He wasn't even angry. Just disappointed.
"Something befitting a tropical climate" Caius remarked with bitter calm once he had allowed himself a moment to breathe, already looking very much done with this when it was just getting started. "Seriously, it's no wonder I could tell you're from another world, much less somewhere else in general. You look like you're about ready to pass out in that outfit."
Then after all that, the arrogant newcomer told him to explain where they were. "Would it kill you to say please?" Caius remarked, shaking his head in disappointment at the misfortune he had found himself in. "Up ahead is Torensten, a city full of adventurers and magic. It's ruled by a council, and a figurehead called King Hremit. It's a safe haven for people from other worlds. It's also hot. Very hot. As you can probably tell."
Pulling out a canteen of water, Caius closed the gap and pushed the canteen into her hands. "Until you can get yourself something you won't cook in, you should probably take a drink before you die."
Perhaps because of her prideful heart, Zerrelle had failed to notice Caius' annoyed disposition and how he had rolled his eyes at her childlike behaviour. Yet this stubborn girl had held her head too high to notice the looks of disappointment he had given her. As such, his bitter sigh would pass right under her brown nose. After seeing how quickly he came forth with the information she had oh so kindly requested of him, explaining to her that many stories and magics lay within the city of Torensten. Zerrelle would assume that he had given up on trying to win this bout between them, in the end believing she had won this silly argument, and so she nodded quite cheekily.
Zerrelle could not help but notice when he mentioned that her clothes were not befitting those meant for tropical climates like Torensten. However, it was true, no matter how much she wanted to deny the fact. Her situation was indeed a unique one. Zerrelle was not of this world, and the sad truth was, she simply did not have any other clothes to spare, not to mention, there wasn’t even a single gil to her name. No thanks to her mother, who had pushed her through the portal without any warning or preparation, she could have at least left her with a spare set of clothes, but no, nothing but this stupid grimoire, that she did not know how to use. It was then that she honestly thought that perhaps if she removed her moogle cape and wizard hat as he suggested, it would be much easier to handle this immense heat, but Zerrelle couldn’t just do that now could she? When first, she would have to accept the fact and admit to Caius that she was indeed wrong about what she had said, and how could the great Zerrelle ever admit to being wrong?
"Haha! Please? He wants me to say please? Heh." She simply laughed at his remark and scuffed at the thought.
It was then, in the midst of her own inner banter that suddenly she would feel something cold being shoved into her hands. Slowly she would look down into her now damp palms, confused to see that it was a canteen of water that had been placed within them. Her eyes would dart back and forth between the canteen and Caius’ face. Droplets of sweat dripped down the side of her forehead, as she found herself gulping in thirst, and softly nibbling her dry lips. Her throat was awfully parched. It was then that she realized that Caius wasn’t trying to be rude or mean at all and that he was just trying to help her out. She would unscrew the cap of the canteen and bring the tip towards her mouth. Hesitantly she placed her lips on the top of the lid and would take a sip of the water.
Feeling a lot cooler, her face would turn a deep red, as she realized what had just happened, and without making any eye contact with the adventurer, she would push the canteen back into his hands, “Thanks. You’re not too bad, I guess.” she would say briefly before running off towards the north gates, but then suddenly she would stop in her tracks and turn around to face the soldier,
“Well, what are you waiting for, let’s go in.” she’d say quite cheerfully, a wide grin lying bare across her face.

The Dragonblades
The rudeness continued up until the woman realized as the canteen was pushed into her hands that Caius was attempting to aid her. That was when her tune changed -- at least somewhat. The mercenary couldn't stop the long sigh as the realization was as clear as day. Caius kept the canteen nearby then as he watched her run off, figuring that with her attire, she would need it again soon enough. Fortunately, Torensten wasn't short places to refill a canteen. It was sorely needed with how hot this place could be. Caius' own armor hadn't really been designed for Torensten's heat either, though not many suits of armor were. So he knew from experience how bad it could get, and fast.
Caius was called to join her as she ran towards the entrance to the city, and the mercenary shook his head as he followed behind to catch up. Soon enough, they would find themselves through the gates between the large, castle-like walls of Torensten. The city, named after the province for reasons unknown to him, was clearly designed to be a walkable city. The only vehicles around were carts and carriages driven by chocobo, and sometimes even the occasional tamed monster. The city was enormous and stretched as far as the eye could see, with airships dotting the sky. The sea air was clear even from here, and it didn't take long to see the ocean with boats darting to and fro as they moved between Torensten and the Pale Coast. The city was densely populated, and crowds were frequent. The city was hustling and bustling with life.
"Well, this is Torensten. White marble, lots of people, airships and magic to be seen further than you can throw. If you're looking for work, the square is as good a place as any to start" Caius brought up once they had arrived. "People have things they need done placed on the bulletin boards all the time. Lots of freelance work to go with whatever occupation you can work with. The monster populations make for plenty of combat jobs as well, if you're combat-inclined. Local mercenary guild can help with the latter too, though I'd only recommend them to someone who is interested in helping keep the peace on top of working as a mercenary. They're a bit unusual for a mercenary guild."
It was like nothing she had seen before. The blue crystalline skies were filled with mechanical boats that traversed across the vast landscapes of Torensten. Almost immediately she had begun to imagine what it would be like to ride on one of these mechanical contraptions, as it was clear that it had carried all sorts of people from all around the world of Zyphon, bringing them to places never before seen. As she watched an airship take off from beyound the shorline, Zerrelle began to wonder what it would be like to ride one of those herself, to somewhere, far beyond the horizon, but with nothing in her pockets, that thought would only become a pipe dream. Nevertheless, Torensten was indeed a magnificent place in this world of magic and adventure.
The smell of fish and old sailor boots tickled her brown nose, causing her to wiggle it in discomfort. Zerrelle would watch as the townspeople moved across the streets, going about their daily lives, some even using magic as if it were just a simple gimmick.
As she took a step forward into the streets of marble and stone, the leg of a large, feathered creature would suddenly step down before her. Shocked and surprised, Zerrelle would jump back, as she had been almost entirely squashed by the feathered creature's large foot. It was then, a man peered over from atop the creature's back and looked down at her. His face annoyed and distraught, by the sight of the girl lying on her butt.
“Hey girly, watch where you're going, would ya!” he’d say to her, quite angrily.
Confused and shaken, Zerrelle didn’t know what to say to the old man, she simply sat there in place, and watched as the giant yellow bird and its master continued on their way.
It was then, as she watched the marble streets, it suddenly became filled with an entire flock of those yellow feathered creatures, her gaze would become filled with wonder. Zerrelle watched in awe as the yellow birds brought their masters to the places they needed to be, and to the people they needed to meet,
“What are these creatures called?” She asked aloud. Excitingly, she turned towards Caius and pointed in the direction of the flock of large birds, “Hey Caius. How much would it cost for one of those birds?”.
Zerrelle figured that she would ask Caius about these beautiful creatures, but more than worrying about the price for one of these yellow birds, she wondered if she would ever get the chance to touch one.

The Dragonblade
Caius had begun to find himself at home with this city as of late, even if he had not intended to. Being stuck here more often for work had led him to find this city more... Familiar, with how much he had found himself here instead of traveling. But he never did enjoy when people stared at him. Fortunately, with the crowds in this massive and walkable city, Caius found himself able to blend in so long as he wore more business casual clothing like what he had on today. He watched as this newcomer marveled at Torensten with mouth agape, smiling slightly at the sight. He remembered his first time coming here as well. Torensten was the first time he had seen a city that wasn't in ruins for most of his lifetime, and it was so huge! Even bigger than the Lestallum, possibly even the size of Insomnia in its prime. It blew him away to see such a large place teeming with life, when he couldn't remember a sight like that before.
But when he looked back to the woman, she was almost throttled by a passing chocobo. Caius moved to place his arm under the crock of hers in order to pull her up, but then the rider spoke up. Rudely, at that. Caius squinted at the sound. Torensten's people were usually fairly warm and friendly, what crawled up this guy's keister?
"Sir. She's new to the city, I will kindly ask you to lay off."
Caius spoke this with a calm yet frigid tone as he stood to his feet, and it wouldn't take long for shock and even a touch of fear to form on the older man's face when they recognized the figure. Not the kind of fear that said "Oh my god, it's a serial killer!" but more the kind when you knew you just pissed off someone capable of cleaving you in two, even if they wouldn't normally. While he could blend in regularly, it wouldn't last if he called attention to himself. That damn thing in the square made sure of that. Caius let out a long sigh then, as he bade the man and bird on their way.
He didn't know if the girl had caught that, as she seemed too preoccupied with the bird. He'd prefer she didn't. It was kind of nice to just be a face in the crowd sometimes. But then suddenly he was yanked and pointed towards the chocobos.
"Those are chocobo" he responded in kind. "You can rent a bird to travel on for a time, but the rental only lasts for a period of time before the birds return to their masters on their own. Buying your own chocobo would be substantially more. Likely not something you can manage right now."
