[attr="class","sixShpost"]Was this still the same world? Cater just couldn't put her finger on it. Definitely didn't seem that Yuffie was still there. Or any of the others for that matter. "Rem?! King?!" she called out while walking through the forest towards what seemed to be a mountain nearby. It did darken the forest quite a bit. At least the castle was gone. Or perhaps she preferred the castle over the gloomy forest. In all honesty, she preferred right now just to be with people rather than alone again.[break][break]
As she got to the rock-solid wall that went up, she did see further right a way to climb upward onto the mountain, but Cater preferred to stay on the ground for now. Or maybe going higher up allows me more sight? she crossed her arms for a bit as she looked up the mountain and scanned the area. In all honesty, she couldn't tell what would be wiser. Spinning towards the forest, she looked around and shrugged. "I'm not getting anywhere by standing still," she said to herself as she turned left and started to walk alongside the mountain-side, figuring she'd best stick between forest and mountain for now. It kept her options open and climbing a mountain would be both time-consuming and much harder to do than just walk in a direction.[break][break]
Figuring if she got a better impression of her surroundings, not missing a town just nearby by accident, she could always climb upward later. Cater could even chance upon someone by merely walking, right? I'm better suited at acting than trying to think of some kind of strategy, she figured that was better left to her comrades, whom sadly were not here. Perhaps Sazh would fly over or something and she could fire into the sky to alert him? She honestly couldn't think of a way to improve this situation any better than what it was right now. If she could find some Torsions, she could also be useful, but she had the feeling... that this was another world. A third one, she supposed, but all the others had come from many different worlds. So it was a likely scenario.[break][break]

At this point, Caius hated this bloody forest. But for one reason or another, he kept finding himself back here. Why in blazes did he continue to take jobs that involved going to this damn forest? He didn't understand it himself, but a job was a job and this job paid decently well. He had to keep making dosh for the Dragonblades if they were to start up on a base, so... Well, as the leader, he had to set the example, didn't he?
Apparently a shapeshifting monster had been leading people into the forest and to their doom, complimenting the illusions of the forest to where just when someone was convinced they were seeing things... Bam, something real pops up looking like one of the illusions and stabs you. And then it eats you. Or that was the story anyway. Deciding to leave Vordun with Celes this go around (Fire breathing dragon + Forest is a bad idea) Caius had decided to climb up the mountain within the forest alone to get a better look. But when he got up there, he found he wasn't alone. The blonde would quirk a brow when he noticed a woman that he hadn't seen before up there. Odds were she wasn't an illusion - or if she was, it wasn't one meant for him. Looking around, he didn't see anyone else. Could this be the shapeshifter? Or perhaps someone that the monster had led here as its next victim?
He supposed if they did try to attack, Caius could punt them off the mountain and gravity would probably solve that problem for him.
Summoning a double-sided shortblade and holding it to his side, Caius would approach the figure. He noted that her garb looked rather familiar, though... Was this perhaps meant for him after all? With a loose interpretation of one of his memories? Either way, he spoke up.
"This isn't exactly the ideal place for wandering."

[attr="class","sixShpost"]Staying near the rocks seemed obvious enough, but Cater did feel the mountain was somewhat obstructing her vision on one side. Which was a logical thing as well. Then again, the trees were less while she would stay near the mountains, so she should be easier to find then if she was going through the forest itself. Of course, if she stood atop this rock, she’d be even clearer to see, but that was a plan for later.[break][break]
Right now Cater stuck to the ground. Hopefully there was a town nearby and she'd not wander too far. Hm? Her eyes found soon a person. Something other than rock and tree. At least she hoped it was a person and not some manikin. The person called forth a blade before approaching her. "You! Are you a person or one of those puppets?" she called while holding up her gun and pointing it at the man when he was getting nearer.[break][break]
Cater didn't want to let the man get closer, so hoped he did stop. He at least spoke, which the not real people didn't seem to do all that much. "Not like I chose this place to wander in," she replied somewhat annoyed, "where is this anyway? And why would you choose to wander here?" she continued, not bothering with introductions yet.[break][break]

Perhaps he should have expected them to threaten him. Either because they were the forest trying to attack him, or because they mistook him for an illusion - he wasn't sure why. But he knew he should have seen this coming. But the second she pointed her gun at his head, his was pointed at hers. Two of them. He'd split the blade in two and they had turned into two separate gun-daggers.
"Try and shoot at me, and you'll find out" Caius remarked bluntly, his finger sitting on the triggers of the gunblades. He had stopped at this point. But he didn't put it past them to be trying to trick him by acting like he was an illusion himself. Caius, unlike her, had met the illusions that spoke. But usually they turned into people they recognized... And this didn't seem to be an illusion for anyone else.
What this could be though, is the shapeshifting monster he was hunting.
"I'm hunting a monster" He spoke up then, though he kept the specifics close to his chest. "Something that's been hurting a lot of people. I've been hired to take it down."
He looked her up and down, then. "Your garb" He then remarked, motioning to her body with the gunblades. "It looks familiar. Where did you get it?" He asked. Her answer would help him figure out what was going on, he hoped. As he hadn't asked Rem where she got hers, and had only a vague idea of where she came from... If this were a monster preying on his memories, they would have to do a lot of lying to make up something convincing. And he would know if they struggled. He watched her carefully, every expression, every bit of body language... He didn't dare keep his eyes off her, or point the firearms away just in case she attacked.

[attr="class","sixShpost"]Bastard, Cater didn't like the blunt remark. Guy had some guts, but seeing he was pointing his own weapon at her, she didn't like the current situation too much. Honestly, she could start dodging and fighting, but the guy at least responded normally. Looking over his weapons, they weren't exactly guns, more like some sort of gunblades, daggers perhaps. Keeping close attention to the man, he had started to talk some more.[break][break]
Listening to the man, Cater pondered on his words. Some kind of monster that had been hurting people. It seemed this guy was some sort of hired force. Mercenary or something. "Like travelers or is there a town nearby?" she asked somewhat stoic as she thought on this. While she didn't mind fighting a monster or anything, she would rather find civilization right now. Though, the man soon asked something more surprising. Her garb.[break][break]
Looking a bit surprised, Cater wondered if one of her class was nearby. "From Akademeia of the Dominion of Rubrum, this garb is that of the Agito Cadets. Mine is specifically that of Class Zero," she replied curiously despite still holding up her gun much like the man had still been holding up his even as he had motioned, "did you meet any of the other Cadets? I was with Rem and King earlier... but ended up in this forest all of a sudden." She had remained stationary the entire conversation as she kept pointing her gun at the man, but also tried to keep some check of the surroundings now she knew there was possibly more danger than just the man.[break][break]
[attr="class","sixShly"] she's a sweet six shooter she knows how to get down
Caius kept his firearms trained on her when she would ask her own questions.
"Travelers, but there's usually villages scattered all around. Shapeshifting monster's been leading them in here. Seems to be able to read their memories from the point of contact. Couple with a bit of illusions that come with this forest once they lead them in, and well..." He trailed off, cocking his head. It didn't hurt to tell her this, if she was the monster then she knew this already. But Caius was still befuddled as to why if this were the monster or an illusion, it would take a form he didn't recognize at all besides the garb.
When asked about it, she seemed a bit surprised but gave an answer that Caius hadn't heard before. It sounded a bit ridiculous, a bit over the top... And didn't sound like something a monster could just make up on the spot. But he still remained cautious. Underestimating the monster would still make a meal out of him, no matter what he believed.
She then asked if he'd met any of the other cadets. She named one he knew, but the other he didn't. It was becoming more and more likely that she wasn't the monster and had just wandered into the forest somehow, but Caius wasn't planning to take chances if he could help it either.
But before Caius could answer, he would hear footsteps nearby. Pointing of of the gundaggers toward the source of it, out stepped a woman draped in the same garb as Cater. Caius recognized the face too, and quirked a brow.
Out had stepped Rem, looking a little bedraggled like she'd gotten a bit torn up from the pointed leaves and ivy on her way up here. She would stop when she saw the two of them, looking to Caius before a bit surprised but looking even more surprised when she saw Cater.
[attr="class","sixShly"] loaded the bullets with my blood in the rounds
[attr="class","sixShpost"]That didn't help. So this monster attacked travelers, but there were also villages scattered around? It didn't really make a full answer. So it attacked both then? Travelers AND villages, well, to be fair, I doubt a monster would care. Are there like tons of villages then? The fact Cater understood there were like tons of villages was a little bothersome, "I should see and find one to actually get my bearings." It seemed like a better idea than listening to this guy.[break][break]
'Read memories from the point of contact', it sounded ominous to Cater, not something I'd like to see, "so a lot of illusions in play," she guessed. Keeping her gun aimed at the man was getting a bit tiresome. They had been just talking thus far, she didn't want to lower it in the case he did shoot, but she really started to doubt it. Just as she started to lower the gun a little, a noise had her aim it at whatever footsteps now appeared. No rest, huh?[break][break]
However, her eyes widened at the sight of what came out. A woman in the same garb as hers. A very familiar face, one she had traveled with before back at the Akademeia, but even afterward when she found herself in that strange realm. "Rem?! Is that you?" she asked in surprise while lowering her gun again. Still, the man had been speaking of an illusion taking on the faces of others, also still fresh in her mind were the Manikins, so she stayed wary. From the corner of her eyes, she checked on Caius.[break][break]
Though, she noted the surprise on Rem's face. "Seriously, we have the worst luck, another different world, you are... Rem, aren't you? Before I find more manikins with our faces on them," she said, the last bit more quietly and annoyed, she was not entirely sure if perhaps these monsters of Caius were just manikins by chance and he was mistaken on some weird illusion monsters.[break][break]
[attr="class","sixShly"] she's a sweet six shooter she knows how to get down
Caius remained quiet as the woman would begin to interact with Rem. He didn't speak at first, instead he just kept his gunblades trained on her. He instead watched them closely. Notably, he couldn't figure out if either of them were fake. While the woman was one he didn't know, the fact she had appeared shortly before Rem indicated that it was possible either she was the manikin, as she called them, or she was an illusion concocted by the forest to make Caius believe that neither of them were actually fake. Caius watched their body language, their facial expressions, everything that he possibly could.
That was when he interrupted before Rem could respond.
"To explain, Rem. We're having a bit of an issue" Caius spoke up calmly, keeping his gunblades trained on Cater. Not that he wasn't wary of Rem's sudden appearance, of course. "I was beset upon by a doppelganger upon entry to this forest, but I drove it off. I don't know your friend here, but I need to know for sure if she's the fake, or if perhaps your appearance is no coincidence. Forgive me for asking, but I do need to make sure" Caius asked the Rem who looked definitely not amused by this whole thing. Before she could open her mouth to complain, Caius held up a hand.
"Easy question, I promise" He cut her off with. "I just need you to tell me what color I said was my favorite."
Now that he had stopped cutting her off, Rem responded irritably.
"Its blue, silly! How can you not-"
"That's correct."
Caius' gaze darted back to Cater as his brows furrowed into a scowl. It seemed he had decided on something. Caius would close his fingers on both triggers...
BANG!
Moving at the last second, Caius had shot Rem through both knees. Rem let out an earsplitting scream in pain before her face began to morph. What replaced her face was some kind of hidious visage, as the entire body began to transform. Caius stared at it coldly.
"... But I never told you."
Of course, Caius had shot the knees just in case his guess had been wrong. He didn't want to kill Rem after all, but now that he knew... He began to reload both gunblades as the creature would let out another scream, one that would stun the both of them with how shrill it was, before leaping down into the forest. Caius fired a few shots, but they got stuck in the trees as the creature disappeared.
"That takes care of that problem" Caius spoke up as he allowed the weapons to disappear, looking to Cater to see if she had disappeared now that there was no reason to keep up an illusion. She was still there, and he shrugged his shoulders at the surprise.
"You had best head out. The forest exit is that way" Caius pointed out as he then pointed a ways behind her. "Don't stop until you see the closest village, it should be straight ahead if you keep going. I'd escort you, but I need to hunt that thing down before it hurts anyone else."
[attr="class","sixShly"] loaded the bullets with my blood in the rounds
[attr="class","sixShpost"]Having asked her questions, it was not Rem that first replied, but Caius brought his voice up first. Considering they did keep dealing with whatever illusions that the man had encountered and there was no telling who was what, Cater let the man do his thing as he gave his suggestions. Which was pretty much an easy question. Considering this Rem hadn't attacked yet, the Cadet doubted it was a manikin, but whatever illusion the man spoke of seemed far more advanced.[break][break]
Following the easy question, Cater raised an eyebrow curiously before her eyes widened again upon the 'Rem' getting shot. The scream and the morphing, definitely not a manikin was what came to Cater's mind as she scratched her chin curiously. If she hadn't fought so many with similar faces, she would probably have been a little more shocked, but then again. She hadn't really shown to be too surprised by enemies that had the faces of friends before.[break][break]
Still, it was an interesting idea to ask something that was never given. Did he even discuss anything with Rem? The man did indicate to know Rem from this whole situation. So that meant that Rem was at least in this world. Hopefully with her body intact, though she stumbled a bit back upon the second scream. She was prepared to defend herself and still held her gun at the ready, but left the fight to Caius for the moment as he seemed to handle it.[break][break]
With the man returning his attention on her, Cater looked at him curiously as he spoke on how that dealt with the present problem. Lowering her own weapon, she studied the way the creature went, "don't need help in taking it down? There might be others ahead," she said as she heard the man pointing out where to go. "In any case, I thank you for the help," she continued while refocusing her eyes on the man.[break][break]
"I would hurry, sir, if you wish to keep up with it. Since we never introduced, I'm Cater," she said with a wave of her hand before turning to where he pointed her towards, "maybe we'll meet again, I'm going to try and find Rem. Goodbye!" With those words, she started moving towards the forest exit.[break][break]
[attr="class","sixShly"] she's a sweet six shooter she knows how to get down
He did consider apologizing for suspecting her, but he hoped she would understand as well that the precautions were necessary given the situation.
Cater, her name was. Seeing as he knew nobody named Cater, it was safe to say it was probably not an illusion. She asked about if he needed help taking it down, and indicated there could be others. Caius hadn't considered the possibility that this forest might breed multiple of this monster. Which also could mean she was one, but... Why would she give him this information if she was one of them? It seemed for now, he would need to trust in her. Normally, he had learned not to trust anyone he met in this forest unless they had come in with him, but for now he figured it would be best to.
She had attempted to leave after all instead of insisting she stay at his side, with only a light mention of helping. Before she left though, he made his decision.
"If you wish to help, I won't say no" Caius spoke with a small smile. Now that he was sure she wasn't one of these monsters, his expression relaxed a little as that hardened exterior softened just a bit. "But if you do, stay close. If we get separated, then we're at the mercy of the illusions and the monster and it will be difficult to tell if the other is real or not should we find one another again. But if you want to head back, I won't stop you either. You have no obligation to help me."
Caius looked down toward the forest, scanning the area to try and figure out where they might have gone. "I'd hurry regardless of your decision" He spoke up then, as he looked back to her one last time.
"Caius" He introduced then. With that, he leaped down and began a speed walk the second he hit ground. He had taken Cater's advice to hurry, it seemed. Whether she joined him, well, it was now or never.
