Final Fantasy Adventu is a roleplaying forum inspired by the Final Fantasy series. Images on the site are edited by KUPO of FF:A with all source material belonging to their respective artists (i.e. Square Enix, Pixiv Fantasia, etc). The board lyrics are from the Final Fantasy song "Otherworld" composed by Nobuo Uematsu and arranged by The Black Mages II.

Faris tugged at the bottom of his shirt. The material was thin and cut too short and he winced at the touch of a breeze at his midrift. The floor was abuzz with other couples in other ridiculous outfits -- some so scantily clad that they were almost naked and others fitted from top to bottom in full-length ball gowns. From the stage, a drum set beat a steady rhythm as a gathered crowd watched someone or another match that rhythm with their feet. Faris stood close to the road with his arms crossed and his shoulders hunched. From across the street, he heard someone whistle and looked up just in time to see a group of men hollering at the lot of them with a few hand gestures Faris had learned on the deck of a pirate ship. Faris felt his cheeks heat as he squared himself to face them.
”Y-you yellow-! Why you-!” was all he could get out before they laughed and disappeared among the crowds. Faris was left standing there with a curse on his tongue, feeling like a beached shark flopping uselessly and gasping for air.
Why was he doing this?
It had been about two hours since registration. They were told they could wander about and enjoy themselves until their time slot came, but Faris couldn’t focus on anything but the way his shirt cut down his sternum and the exposed chill between his hips and upper ribcage. His hair was tussled and tied back with a ribbon. His boots had been swapped out for a pair of women’s heels. Somehow (and he still didn’t know how) the crystal had materialized a pair of dangling ruby earrings into his decidedly not pierced ears. In short, he looked every bit the flirtatious dancing girl he’d be playing in less than half an hour.
By the gods did he hate the dancer class!
”Er...Lenna! Do you remember what we’re doing? The dances I showed you? You’ve got the hang of them, right?” He was talking more for his own sake than hers. His nerves were a ball of pure energy vibrating like the engine of a fire ship. His hands clenched and unclenched in rapid succession. ”Do you need to go over anything? Of course, it’s all in the will of crystal what we’ll end up doing out there. But the crystals have never steered us wrong before!”
His voice didn’t sound right either. It sounded higher than usual. Somehow more feminine, or maybe that was just an illusion. Faris wasn’t a man today. No he was playing at being a real woman. Like he’d never been dropped in a den of pirates. Like he’d stayed in a castle with his sister wearing layered dresses and having tea parties as the princess he’d been born as. Today Faris wasn’t Faris, but Sarisa, the first daughter of the king of Tycoon and a proper lady. Or something like it. Faris had never really known the man, but somehow he doubted that he’d have approved of his daughters dressing the way they were now.
Sarisa. That’s right. This was just another costume. Just another name that wasn’t the real him. They’d make some money in a way that Lenna didn’t have to endanger herself. They’d get their feet wet with using the crystal’s power where the worst that could happen was embarrassing themselves. That’s what this was about. It was all for Lenna.
Do it for her!
”Heh.” Faris cast his sister a sheepish grin. ”Do I look like a proper lass? I don’t care how much of the crystal I’m using, I’ll never get used to wearing these things.” He gestured mournfully at his scarlet, high-heeled shoes. ”And these are starting to hurt worse than if I’d stuck a dagger through them!”
Glancing across herself she could not help but admire the rather quick change that had overcame herself when she called upon the crystal as Faris had instructed her to do. This was something she would have to try more and more inside of the future as it seemed that this would come in handy. Et now within the moment of time she could not help but admire the rather beautiful dress that she was within. It was elegant and most definintly fit her more regal nature. Showing just the right amount of skin within the right amount of places across herself.
Looking over at the other competitors within this competition she could not help that some of them were just trying to win by showing the most skin or being the most outrageous. She heard the whistle coming from the crowd toward Faris and she could not help but give a reassuring smile toward her. Listening to her sister let out a string of words but nothing concrete coming from the usually salty sailor’s mouth made her lean over close to her sibling. “They are just jealous they cannot pull off what you pull off Faris.”
She was hoping that the playful joke would help ease her sisters mind inside of this moment. Giving her another reassured smile as she nodded in acknowledgement to what it was that she asked. It was a little hard for her to fully remember it at the start and yet her mind seemed to just clench it up and clean it up quickly. Her memory was surprisingly like a bear trap when needed. “Something is telling me that the crystals we have will work fine. They will guide our feet and our steps will follow suit… or at least that is what I feel in my gut. Cause if I didn’t I would be a bundle of nerves ready to burst.”
She was being serious as her hands were wringing the piece of paper that they had a little information written down on in her hands tightly. When Faris made mention about her own appearance she could not help but chuckle lightly. Taking a step back she nodded. “Most certainly. You are looking great. I doubt anyone in the audience will be able to keep their eyes off of you while we dance in a little bit… Though I admit I hope they do not find out we are using magic to help us… Yet I cannot help but fele there are others doing similar things.”
Her own words tense and yet calming to her ears. It had been a while since she had done anything like this let alone anything to the public. Glancing down at her own heels she nodded in agreement to Faris. “I do agree… These things are a pain but they do make the men stare at us. The others are not wearing anything close to them. So its unique…”

Let's get this going!
You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
Lenna was confident. Of course she was. How could she not, looking like that with the background she had? Lenna looked gorgeous in that little blue dress. Like a woman who knew what she was doing and was comfortable with it. She wore her heels steadier than Faris, and her silken dress was accented with a flowing sash around the middle and a river lilly stuck into the left side of her hair. Looking at her made Faris feel somehow better and worse all at once. Better because it was almost inspiring to see someone look so right put together like that, and worse because Faris knew he could never hit the same mark. His own costume was just that -- a costume -- and he wasn’t for a second comfortable in it. This wasn’t him. This wasn’t Faris Scherwiz, this was…
Sarisa Tycoon. The name made him shudder with something like anticipation or maybe dread. Faris didn’t know which.
Lenna’s hands were folding together. Nervous, Faris guessed. His own hands often twisted when he felt the same way -- a habit in the family, he supposed. But still, she couldn’t help but to try to make him feel better, her own feelings be damned. ”You are looking great. I doubt anyone in the audience will be able to keep their eyes off of you while we dance,” she said, and Faris felt his cheeks grow hot. Everyone would be watching. Of course they would, that was the point. They’d all be watching him look like this...moving like a dancer...like a woman.
He was so absorbed in his thoughts that he barely caught her worries about using magic to win. It was all just a part of their talents, he wanted to reassure her. There was no such thing as fair play. But his mind was still caught elsewhere and his tongue didn’t quite catch up. He imagined the heat of stage lights, the call of his name, and then pounding expectation. They were here to see him. Him dancing. Him in these clothes…
No, no, no. Not him. Sarisa. Keep it straight.
”Heh. I’m half tempted to switch to a white mage and cure the pain away.” Faris made a spell-casting gesture at their feet. ”I guess we’ll have to wait until this is done, eh? Might be just a tad conspicuous if we’re waiting here in white robes.” Faris shot Lenna a grin that he knew came out a lot weaker than usual. His stomach was jerking around like a dancer in itself.
”All this, it reminds me of that ball you had at the castle Tycoon. I guess it was for me. Aye, for ’the return of Princess Sarisa.’” Faris shook his head, half scowling, half laughing. It all felt so ridiculous even now. ”They somehow got me into a dress I was practically drowning in and did up my face and hair so I hardly knew my own reflection. That was an odd night. Going by a name I didn’t know and looking like someone else entirely.” Faris glanced at Lenna, a hint of fondness in his eyes. ”You were something out of a book though. You knew every step of the dances. Tried to teach me too but I was hopeless without a crystal.”
That wasn’t the best night he’d ever had. It was damn awkward, actually, and he’d never wanted another one like it. But it was a part of him, still. The royal part of him that had nearly been lost at sea. ”When we get back from this, I’ll stay at Tycoon again. A sailor’s promise. No matter what parties you want to throw.” Faris gave a real laugh at that. ”I think I’ll just be happy to see it again.”
Lenna’s own nervous energy was keeping her stomach inside of knots. This was not something she truly wanted to show but could not. The hand wringing was something that she was having a hard time controlling. Taking in a breath she managed to pull her hands aside and allow her mind to finally release the nervous energy. She could not help but stifle a chuckle as Faris spoke about becoming a white mage and healing their feet. Giving her a slight shrug of her shoulders she spoke softly. “We could… Though I wonder if anyone would really even notice that…”
The words thankfully did not draw the attention of anyone else that stood around them as the next group came back to the back after their performance. Glancing at them she could not happen but notice that they looked exhausted. It seems that so many where leaving everything out there on the stage. Once more her nerves came back in a big way and her hands began to wring inside of one another once more. Yet this energy vanished as Faris began to speak about a ball that Lenna had held for Faris upon Faris’ return to Tycoon. Listening to the words she could not but help and feel the right thing to say in the moment and her filter did not protest. “Faris this is you. Just as much as the pirate side is. You are both my sister and a strong tough pirate hero… One is just more… personal to you and you would only show this side of yourself to me and maybe those closest to you. I do not… know but this almost feels like the inner you Faris.”
She spoke so only Faris could hear her and she hoped that the words would sink in for his eyes. Lenna was trying her best as the person three ahead of them where called up and she could not help but feel her heart jump into her chest. “Only a couple more… I am getting so nervous… So so nervous…”
Taking a few moments to try to collect herself she gave her sister another reassuring look as if trying to draw some smile on her face.

You can start the dancing if you want. xD
You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
The laugh didn’t feel right. It was hollow, nervous, hiding something. Faris knew himself better than anyone, and he knew that none of it was right. None of this. He could act confident all he wanted, but it wouldn’t shine through because none of it was real. Apparently Lenna noticed that too because she didn’t entertain his wistful thinking. Instead, she looked at him straight on and said, ”Faris, this is you.”
It was so blunt that Faris couldn’t help but blink in surprise. For a moment, he was shaken out of his deep discomfort by pure shock alone. ’This is you as much as the pirate side is.’’You’re both my sister and a tough pirate hero.’ They were odd words. Sentimental words that cut into him like daggers, paring away his defenses and leaving nothing but a beating core. This is you. It felt wrong. Like something he’d punch someone else for saying, but coming from Lenna…
She’d always been better at looking inside of people, hadn’t she? He wondered if maybe she’d seen something that he’d missed.
”I do not know, but this almost feels like the inner you, Faris.”
”The...inner me?” The words were left to slosh around his head like ocean waves. Was there an inner him? Was it something like this? Vulnerable, small, and deeply uncomfortable? That was all he could associate with this look, these heels, that name. Was this really him or was it…?
”Only a couple more… I am getting so nervous… So so nervous…”
”Eh?” Faris straightened and looked at her in alarm. Only a couple more? How could that be right? He peered around the crowds to try to get a look at the stage and low-and-behold, there was a couple only two acts away from theirs. ”Oh.” His stomach plummeted into a sinkhole beneath his lungs. ”Oh gods no.”
He tried to swallow, but his mouth was suddenly dry. He swept a long piece of hair from his eyes and tried to clear his expression before turning back to Lenna. ”Nothing to be nervous about,” he said, though he had no idea how convincing it was. ”We’re not putting our lives on the line afterall. This is just to get some practice with the crystals. You need that, and the money isn’t bad either.” That’s right. He just had to keep telling himself that. He wouldn’t die if they failed up there. They wouldn’t get mauled by some monster’s fangs which made it perfect for Lenna. Personally, Faris would have rather faced a snarling behemoth than get on that stage, but Lenna? No, he wouldn’t put Lenna into that kind of danger. Not before she was ready.
Faris nodded again to reassure himself. ”Right, there’s nothing to worry about. We go up there, let the crystals do their work, and then we’re done. Money well-earned. The most honest money I’ve made since I got here and probably the easiest too. That’s all the matters. All that matters.” The music faded, there was thunderous applause, and the next dancer approached the stage. His jaw clenched.
They were next.
”We'll be fine.” Faris went on once he found his voice again. ”Just fine.”
Her own nervous energy had leeched over to Faris as she could notice her sister squirm a little. Tightening her hands around one another she could not help but release them after a few moments as she tried to relax her own racing mind. This was easier said then done as she was not fully adjusted to this despite her cool and calmed exterior. “Aye. There is nothing to be worried about… we got this… The Tycoon siblings are back together…”
In the short time she had been around Faris since they met back up she had began to pick up a few words that Faris used. This one just happened to be one of her new favorites. The words spoken were both for Faris and for herself more than anything else. Everything else that Faris said was listened to as she could feel the words actually help to calm her a little despite that probably not being the reason for her sister to say these things. “Aye… I will think of this as practice with the crystal. Easy way to think this through and not get nervous. You are a genius Faris. Though I think we both would rather face down a beast the size of a house than a stage in front of people.”
She was hoping the words would have a positive impact to her sibling as for the first time she had an idea to cling to. An idea that would push her along and make this more than bearable. With a light laugh she could not help but notice the people right before them get called up there. The laugh faded away but she could not help herself and she stood up. Swaying a slight bit on her heels as her body got readjusted to the stance needed to make this all work and not topple over like a half felled tree. Extending her hand to her sibling she could not help but slide a cheesy but assuring smile on her face. “We got this Faris… Just like slaying another beast… or horde of beasties that are ravenous and uncaring. Yeah I will think of it like that. They are just ravenous beasts that we can beat with this silly form….”
The words echoed from her mouth as she heard the music for the couple in front of them hit its fever pitch and neared its conclusion. All her nervous energy began to slide away as she close her eyes and a glimpse through the chaos that clouded her mind slipped through. It seemed that just past all of the murkiness the old Lenna sat just beneath the surface and when she focused up it came back to the surface. “Let us slay another beast…” She spoke softly right as the other teams music ended and the applause echoed out loudly. That meant it was now their turn to dance and show what they got.
Lifting her gaze toward the curtain that opened she could not help but feel a steely gaze come over her features as she walked out toward everything in front of them. A new world, new opportunities, and new people to show just why she was a Queen and why Faris was her sibling.

I feel so accomplished for finishing this finally
You've got a lot of brass, or mayhap you're just lacking in brains!
”Let us slay another beast.”
Faris would have swelled with pride if his heart hadn’t lodged itself deeply between his lungs. There was a fire in them both that couldn’t be quenched, but right now, that fire felt dim and flickering. The music faded as though on an echo. It rang in his ears like something ethereal chiming from the edges of an other-worldly Rift. It’s time. It’s time. It’s time.
Faris’ feet moved on their own as he shuffled into the public eye. The lights were faded, but they felt like blazing fire lashing at his cheeks. For a moment, there was but him, Lenna, and the darkness beyond those lights -- hazy and unknowable. The crystal beat hot in his blood.
And then the music started.
From somewhere far away, Faris heard his name shifting from the shadows. “Faris and Lenna Tycoon.” The announcement struck his heart like a frozen dagger and for a moment, he stiffened with anticipation, but the crystal had other plans. Maybe his panic had awoken it or maybe it was the opening lines of music. Maybe it knew better than he did how it wanted this to go. But as soon as the fear settled in, something else did too. A single thought.
What good was standing here, cowering before a ravenous beast? There was only one way to slay his fears, and that was to fight.
And so he raised his arms, took a breath, and began to dance.
It came to him as naturally as it ever had. He surrendered his will to the crystal, and the crystal took care of the rest. For a moment, there was a creeping dread of uncertainty as his dance had yet to make itself clear. And then a pair of swords glinted to life in his hands. The Sword Dance. For the first time in his life, Faris could have cursed it from the depths of the sea and back. What would even happen if he tried that dance without an enemy to target? Would he attack the audience? Would he strike Lenna?
But no. It appeared that neither would be the case as he slipped past Lenna, twirling and stepping in sync to the swords twirling through his fingers. Every second was tense with questions -- Would he strike first? Would his dance draw blood? How did this even work? -- but he was answered only with gasps of awe as he tossed a sword above his head and caught it with a single fluid swipe. Apparently, he needed a target to turn his dance into something truly deadly.
Well, that was a relief. And a surprise to him. He hadn’t even considered it until he was standing here, heavily armed and swaying like a snake in front of a captive audience, all of them gaping. Maybe they sensed the element of danger at play. Why didn’t he ever think these things through?
Time passed. He couldn’t say how long in the murky haze of side-steps, twirls, and flashing blades, but it all blended together in the end. Once he knew it was (probably) safe, he felt almost at ease with the weight of weapons clutched in his hands. Dancing wasn’t so different from fighting, really. They both took coordination, skill, and the fire to see it through. By the time that the music finished on a bombastic final note and he spun into a final stop, Faris almost could have said he’d enjoyed himself -- if only a little. He panted his own rhythm now, and the applause could have swept him away like thunder in a stormy sea for all its ferocity. The current of it ushered him off stage to the echoing of their names again: “Give it up for Faris and Lenna - the Dancing Queens of Tycoon!” And then he was being handed a bag of gil, the music started once more, and it was another pair’s turn to draw the eye of the crowd.
Faris stared at the weight in his hand. A pouch of five hundred gil, as promised. Then he laughed, a wild and rapturous laugh that let loose like wind released from a sail. It had all been so built up. So dreaded. And now it was done. As easy as that.
”Well, that got us a bit of gil for our efforts.” Faris grinned and jingled the bag for Lenna to see. ”And not a single drop of blood to show for it. Now I don’t know about you, but I think a drink’s in order. A heavy one that tastes like fire. And I’m about to throw these shoes in the river and hope they rot there for all the good they’ve done me. What do you say to leaving this job in the bin where it belongs?”
Lenna moved alongside her sister out onto the stage. The cheering crowd of people enthusiastic to know exactly what it was that these two where going to do. As it seemed multiple acts had riled up the crowd and they were expecting some of the best by this time of the day. She was surely not going to disappoint them if she could. Inside of her own body she felt herself freeze ever so slightly as their names were yelled out through the speakers toward the people.
If it was not for the crystal she would have been a deer caught with a bright light shining directly in her eyes. The crystal however allowed the music as it began to flow to allow her movements to compliment her sister’s movements. As she began to move with the sword dance she could not help but join in. Her own movements complimenting and accentuating all of her sibling’s movements. She was purposely drawing all of the attention toward her as her actions gave off that air of danger.
Using the crystals power, she could not help but use magical influences to enhance the movements of the blades causing slight afterimages of the blade to swirl about. It was as if Lenna was calling upon things she did not know that she could do inside of the moment. Little flickers of flame and lightning was sparking and flaming her blades to make all the actions just the more dangerous looking. As the music hit its fevered pitch she made certain that everything was done the moment it stopped and the crowd began to cheer for them. Breathing heavily, she could not help but shoot her sister a smile of encouragement.
Heading in back she could not help but smile and bow toward the person as they were handed money. It felt good to actually get things legitimately and not have to hurt or injure someone else. Walking away with her sibling she could not help but keep that smile about her face. “That was so much fun… I was not expecting the crystal to just take over and make you look so much better inside of your sword dance… but I agree. I say let us go grab something to celebrate our achievement today.”
With a brief flash she shifted back into her much more normal looking self and she smiled wider at Faris as an evening with her would be so much fun.
